As the Indian paper industry and the whole of the economy at large, is continuing to deal with the effects of COVID-19 on their businesses, factors like – resiliency and agility became essential to sustain growth. The report on 'Top Paper Companies 2021' highlights the companies that possess differentiating capabilities and are using their existing and emerging strength making them a dynamic player in the everevolving and growing pulp & paper industry.
T
he pulp & paper industry is quite diversified, using different types of raw materials to produce different kinds of pulp, papers, and paper-based packaging grades, and so on, by various kinds of methods in mills of all sizes. As per the data by Central Pulp & Paper Research Institute (CPPRI), in 2019-20, there are 861 paper mills with

526 operational and with a total installed capacity of 27.15 million tonnes in India. While this is an old research data, owing to the fragmented structure of the Indian Paper Industry comprising of small scale mills operating in an unorganised way, the actual production and the number of mills could be more.

According to an industry research report by Research and Markets, the Indian paper & paper products market is projected to grow from USD 8.6 billion in 2018 to USD 13.4 billion by 2024, with a CAGR of 7.8 percent during 2019-2024.
companies are working towards investing in R&D, building new capacities, new products, and bringing technologically superior and cost-effective products designed for the Indian market.
As numerous businesses in the paper industry were severely impacted because of the lockdown due to COVID-19, it correspondingly brought a huge demand compression in the domestic industry and consumption of paper and paperbased products, especially during the first wave of the pandemic. While the various segments of the paper industry have been impacted but being diverse in nature, it is but evident that different segments have been affected differently. According to the Indian Paper Manufacturers Association (IPMA), the market size of the Indian paper and paperboard market stood at 16.1 million tonnes in 2019. Moreover, the packaging consumption in India increased by 200 percent from the previous year, rising from 4.3 kg per person per annum (pppa) to 8.6 kg pppa.
In the new wave of digital transformation, the pandemic has been like a catalyst for companies across sectors, including the pulp and paper industry, to fast-track adoption of digital technologies to sustain their business in the new normal. In fact, the Writing & Printing segment has been massively impacted by the pandemic. Nevertheless, the paper packaging segment including – paperboards, folded cartons, kraft paper, and so on, has attained good traction, owing to the awareness amongst the general public and as the corporates/FMCGs/restaurant chains are transitioning towards paper-based packaging.
What sets the top paper companies apart? Firstly, there are quantifiable factors that play a key role in determining the growth of the paper industry like – production volumes, turnover, and so on. Then, there are a few socioeconomic factors impacting raw material availability and supply chain. Finally, the factors like the efforts of the companies in being mindful of their environmental impact and CSR activities also have far-reaching effects on the overall growth and evolution of the paper industry, besides innovations, market trends, and technological advancements.
Steering forward The paper industry is wood-positive, meaning that it grows more trees than it harvests – has brought around 1.2 million hectares of land under plantations annually, through industry-driven agro/farm forestry. Notably, the domestic paper industry players have suggested some key measures to the government in the past few months in a bid to increase its efforts for becoming more sustainable. With the aim to enable the paper industry on a path to being self-reliant and resolving the raw material issues, IPMA in its pre-budget consultation with the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, has recommended pulpwood plantations on degraded lands and on available lands near paper mills.
Digital transformations During the pandemic, a great many pulp and paper manufacturers increased their focus on product and process innovations and adapted in the changed conditions so as to handle such disruptions. In the future, we would witness some of the outputs of these efforts with innovative products getting launched and industry players exploring different models to bolster supply chain management capabilities. Thus, the
Overall, the Indian pulp & paper industry is moving from being an unorganised and technologically obsolete segment towards being an organised one with state-of-the-art technologies. We believe that the growth in the coming years would be led by new product introduction, strong demand in the paper and paper packaging industry, and an increase in the demand for recyclable, paper-based products, while the macro-theme would be sustainability.
Presenting the Competitive Environment of the Pulp & Paper Industry Paper Mart's Top Paper Companies in India is a biennial report featuring the key pulp & paper manufacturing companies of India. Education for the Underprivileged: Education is a critical component of any development programme. BILT's CSR programmes focus on the improving the levels of learning in children in the age group of 6 to 14 years. This is done through bridge programmes that get children back into schools, remedial education programmes that prevent children from dropping out and Libraries that encourage children to read and retain their interest in education. In addition, BILT runs some innovative programmes like the 'Mobile Computer Literacy' programme that delivers computer education through busses to school in far flung areas. Community-Based Health Intervention: BILT's collaborative health intervention programme involves both awareness and prevention. These projects help augment government medical services at the grass-roots through village health workers. A focus on maternal and child health issues has ensured that this critical issue is addressed at the right time. The availability of health providers at the doorstep gives timely help to communities on their minor health issues and better awareness regarding diseases and their prevention. HIV/AIDS Prevention: The HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention programme covers employees, their families, community members and high-risk groups such as truckers and transporters who work with the group companies. The HIV/AIDS awareness programme has reached over 200,000 people at the workplace and in the communities. Bilt runs two ART centres (at Ballarpur in Maharashtra & at Koraput in Odisha) that cater to the needs of people living with HIV/AIDS in 'Public Private Partnership' with NACO, MSACS & OSACS. Natural Resources Management & Preservation of Environment: Responsiveness towards a cleaner and safer environment is an important commitment that includes ensuring proper management and regeneration of water, waste management & preservation and conservation of forests. Over years, the company has worked closely with the communities & irrigation department of Govt. of Maharashtra for rehabilitation of the Canals, Renovations of the Check-dams and Water Harvesting Structures and Nala Plugs. These structures have been de-silted and major & minor repair works were carried out so as to increase their efficiency of holding rain water. Deepening of village ponds and putting up Bore-wells for drinking water purpose, well recharges are some of the other examples of the work BILT has undertaken at its plant sites Bhigwan near Pune in Maharashtra & Jeypore in Koraput District, Odisha. PM: What challenges do you face due to the ongoing pandemic? SN: Since the pandemic outbreak, the industry has been through its ups
R•I•D•I•N•G H•I•G•H and downs. One huge impact which we all face is the unavailability of shipping containers to import or export. Chemical supplies from China, the US, and Europe have all seen major disruptions with prices for many basic products seeing steep increases. Almost all raw materials have seen an increase of about 30-50 percent. Quite a few have even doubled. Most monomers have seen supply being restricted and price racing ahead with now a shortage in supply situation of polymers too. Freight costs have also been at alltime highs with poor vessel space availability to Indian ports. We do believe the worst might be over.
PM: What were the recent developments at your company? Also, share your outlook on the Indian paper industry and your target for the coming years.
SN: ASA has been a major focus area for us in the last couple of years. And amidst these recent developments in the chemical side, we find it more crucial to bring in more of our customers onto using ASA. Keeping this in mind, we have very recently finished the expansion of our ASA production line in our Kandy facility. With double the capacity, we will now be able to fulfil the increasing global demand for ASA too. Moreover, we also plan to further double our ASA capacity in the next FY. This will further reinforce our position as the only ASA manufacturer in the entire South-East Asia and the Indian subcontinent. As for the Indian paper industry, we are very bullish on its growth. Paper consumption per capita in India is still below the global average and there is huge room for expansion which will eventually come by. Though writing & printing paper might be witnessing

PM: Throw some light on new developments or product launches. RP: Following an initiative raised by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’, we recently developed an air cushion type pressurized headbox for one of our existing and renowned customers. We also supplied the customer with a kraft paper machine and currently, they are achieving maximum output and satisfaction from our paper machine. A f te r co n s i d e r i n g t h e m a c h i n e performance, the same customer asked us to supply an air cushion-type headbox for their paper machine. The customer noted the great performance of the headbox in the sense of GSM variation, CD profile, sheet formation, etc. We also developed a high-speed rewinder with an auto tension control system with a capacity to run at the speed of 1800 mm. Our regular design of the rewinder includes manual controls which is the main reason for paper web breakage and production
losses. In order to avoid this kind of issue, we specifically introduced the auto tension control system in our high-speed rewinder which senses the proper operating speed and fluctuation in paper web tension. This newer system regulates the Rewinder speed and maintains proper tension. We recently supplied this newly developed rewinder with ATC system to one of our customers and per their review, they are getting rated output from the rewinder. Following another initiative by our Prime Minister, 'Make in India' & 'Local for Vocal,' we are opting out of cast iron made drying cylinders and instead, we developed a concept of carbon steel drying cylinders. This provides our customers with a better option. Currently, we are executing the carbon steel drying cylinders for one of our projects and these will soon be ready to serve the paper industry. In the next phase, we are looking forward to furthering developments such as the internal grooving in the drying cylinder. Noted below are the comparisons between the two dryers to help our customers save money and increase their ROIs. =
Higher heat transfer: Steel dryers have a better thermal conductivity in comparison to Cast Iron material. Therefore, it can be utilized with lower steam pressure to get a better
74 | www.papermart.in / October-November, 2021
=
Lower Energy Cost: Due to their higher thermal conductivity, Steel dryers consume less steam to get heated and quickly transfer the heat for paper drying. This leads to an enhancement in the production rate of the paper machine. By consuming less heat, we can save big on energy costs.
=
Operation at High Speed: We also provide an option for internally machining & grooving. By doing this, we can heat a larger contact area of the dryer shell which leads to higher heat transfer.
=
Safety: CI Dryers have some poor material properties like brittleness and lower thermal conductivity. Also, due to the excess steam pressure and excess stress generated, the CI Dryers may explode. In comparison, Steel will perform better in case of any excess stress generated and in case it exceeds the allowable limits, the dryers will still remain intact. This will prevent any kind of damage to the machine.
PM: What are your future plans for the coming 2-3 years? RP: Considering the current growth of the paper industry at both domestic and international scales, we are planning to expand our workshop area to increase our manufacturing capacity with the goal to provide earliest or ontime delivery. As the current trend is moving towards automation and an accurate manufacturing process, we are planning to extend our manufacturing range by adding advanced and state-of-the-art machineries. We have already started on this milestone as recently we imported a CNC lathe machine (2 mtr width X 10 mtr length) and a CNC horizontal boring/milling machine (2 mtr width X 8 mtr length).

Sharma Fabricators and Erectors Pvt. Ltd. (SFE) is entrusted with these pre-assembly jobs for different projects which we have successfully executed.
PM: Besides the core business of installing pulp & paper plants, what other products and services have been provided by Sharma
Fabricators and Erectors. VS: As environmental pollution has become the most serious concern throughout the world, sharing the same concern, India is giving special thrust towards 'Green' energy. To be a part of this drive, Sharma Fabricators and Erectors, through its umbrella organization, has started providing solar power technolog y, supply, installation, operation, and maintenance to the domestic consumers as well as industry. It has already provided solar power plants to Century Pulp and Paper, ITC hotel, NHPC, and many domestic consumers with rooftop and ground-mounted power. Presently, it is in the process of providing a similar solar plant to Trident Group.
PM: What challenges has COVID imposed on your working and how did you overcome the same? VS: The major challenge before the company during the COVID period was multi-fold. As a matter of fact, COVID 19 had two phases – the first one was total lockdown for about three months and the second one was the post lockdown period when the pandemic was still very much prevalent in the country. During the lockdown phase, the business got almost totally stuck. Special attention and care were taken towards the health safety of the staff and workmen associated with the company – along with their families. Management also tried hard so that no employee was retrenched. Fiscal plans

were made on an emergency basis so that salaries could be paid as regularly as possible without any pay cut. SFE is happy that it succeeded in these endeavors. After the lifting of the lockdown, there were still fears in the mind of employees and their families and therefore, it was a tough time to convince and depute them to different sites. More challenging was to ensure that at different sites, there was no major health hazard for our employees. By God's grace, we were able to enforce that. Now, we are at almost total normalcy.
PM: What are your future plans for the coming years? VS: At one time, Sharma Fabricators and Erectors Pvt. Ltd. was a company working only in the pulp & paper industry. Over the years, we experienced that this industry has its cycle of coming up and going down and accordingly during the lean period; the numbers of new projects become less. Therefore, we started to explore new areas other than this industry and test our capability. Now, keeping pulp & paper as our bread and butter, we have succeeded in putting our footprint in other industrial sectors like textile, aluminum, power, chemicals, petrochemical, etc. In the coming days, we will further explore these areas. Apart from this, we have already started exploring new overseas geographical areas for new business opportunities which will be continued.

Mr. Prakash Sampath, Senior Technical Manager, Haber
W
ith the premise to enable the pulp & paper industry in becoming more sustainable and efficient, Haber provides AI+IoT based technology to analyse data by predicting results and driving value on a real-time basis. In an interview with Paper Mart, Mr. Prakash Sampath, Senior Technical Manager at Haber, throws light on the importance of strength aids in the pulp & paper industry and how Haber, through its innovative approach and AI-driven automation services, is transforming this space. Chemical applications through AI-based control have enabled paper mills to generate accurate and real-time insights which pave way for efficient process management. In addition to improving efficiency, AI-based solutions also help in achieving sustainability goals by reducing energy consumption and the carbon footprint. Haber's AI-based solutions have exhibited impressive results in several processes like retention and drainage, microbial control, scale control, dissolved air flotation, and others. This interview focuses on the AI-driven strength aid program.
Paper Mart: Can you tell us in brief about strength aids and how important they are to paper production?
80 | www.papermart.in / October-November, 2021
Prakash Sampath: Paper strength measured via burst or tensile strength is one of the critical end-product qualities which manufacturers keep in mind throughout the paper production process. It varies depending on the type of fiber used as each raw material has its own properties. The chemical bonding between the fibers drives the strength properties of the paper. To achieve the desired quality in the paper, paper mills use different chemistries of strength aids which improve the dry and wet strengths. In addition to improving strengths, these chemicals also help in improving retention and drainage and machine runnability. They also help reduce basis weight and chemical costs. Thus, the impact of the strength aid program is not only limited to achieving the desired paper strength but also extends to several aspects of paper production.
PM: How do paper mills usually achieve the desired strength and what are the challenges in doing the conventional way? PS: Many gums, synthetic polymers, and vegetable extracts are used as dry strength additives. For instance, some of them include amphoteric and cationic starches, natural
I•N•T•E•R•V•I•E•W
Artificial intelligence-driven automation enables Haber to continuously monitor the chemistries and fine-tune the chemical dosage.
gums (guar), glyoxalated cationic resins, polyacrylamides, Carboxymethyl cellulose, modified polyamine, etc. Similarly, there are different types of wet strength additives. Currently, chemical addition and monitoring is done manually at most paper mills. When done manually, it becomes prone to errors. Poor control on strength aid application will have a huge impact on the paper production process. Improper dosage affects chemistries, causes variation in cationic demand, and affects the drainage characteristics in the wire part. Overdosing or underdosing of chemicals will impact the product quality and lead to higher rejects during quality checks. It drives the cost of production as well.
PM: What products/services provided by you can help paper mills in the strength aid program?
AI-driven automation helps production through its real-time monitoring and data-driven decision-making... This makes the entire system robust and helps achieve improved production.
PS: Haber through its proprietary platform eLIXA® can automate the process of adding strength aid additives, improving the overall effectiveness of the process. When driven by AI control, the process becomes predictable, leading to better quality products and reduced costs of production. Haber provides complete dry and wet end strength aids to improve and sustain the process requirement through its expertise and testing techniques.
PM: How can paper mills benefit from automation in strength aid program? PS: Artificial intelligence-driven automation enables Haber to continuously monitor the chemistries and fine-tune the chemical dosage to help maintain the wet end chemistry, improve product quality, process efficiency, and increase overall cost savings. Automation is based on inputs such as production rate and process variations. It also monitors critical parameters in real-time, which enables the implementation of a superior strength aid program. It replaces the manual process and reduces the scope of errors as well. In addition to strength improvement, it helps achieve improved machine runnability, increased drainage, and reduced dusting issues.
PM: Why is automation the way ahead to solve such critical issues? PS: With demand for paper products shooting up every passing day, there is a need to expand production rapidly. This would be impossible without improving the efficiencies of the system. AI-driven automation helps production through its real-time monitoring and data-driven decision-making. Identifying variations in process parameters in real-time helps in taking prompt corrective actions, and thereby, maintaining superior product quality and overall system efficiency. When decisions are driven through data observed over a period, it helps to arrive at the right decisions. This makes the entire system robust and helps achieve improved production and consistent quality products. As it has been in the case of several industries, AI will play a key role in transforming the paper industry and early adopters will have a competitive advantage.

In a conversation with Paper Mart, Mr. Amit Goel, Founder & MD, Knam Marketing Pvt. Ltd., presents an overview of the company, the product range supplied by the company, and the growth strategies of the company.
I•N•T•E•R•V•I•E•W Paper Mart: Could you please give us a glimpse into the business journey of Knam Marketing Pvt. Ltd. along with its crucial milestones and market presence? Amit Goel: Knam Marketing Pvt. Ltd. was founded in 2009 as a waste paper supplier. We started with barely threefour containers and went up to 200 containers in 2012. The period 2017-18 was quite significant in terms of our business growth as we became more concerned about tonnage rather than containers. We reached the capacity of supplying around 4,50,000 tonnes and realised the huge potential for finished paper exports in India. That is when we entered the finished papers segment. Currently, the exports in this segment are looked after by Mr. Rahul Gupta and Mr. Gagandeep Singh. We also do stocklots, and that's also handled by them. Talking about the export side, we began our venture when China's imports grew
at their fastest pace, however, soon we realised that we can't be 100 percent dependent on the Chinese market and started exploring the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) markets, and today, we can say that we have achieved an outstanding growth rate in the MG Poster Paper segment – which caters to the food industry in the MENA market. Presently, we provide more than 300 tonnes of MG Poster Paper in the range of 18-30 GSM, which is majorly used for food packaging. Thus, we have a decent contribution in the categories of – Duplex Board, Kraft Paper, and so on. We provide various kraft paper grades, and have also been exploring and undertaking research to bring more such grades to the market. The writing & printing segment is not very much on track per se, and the reason for this volatility is the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We are certainly hopeful that the market situation will improve further for the writing & printing
Knam Marketing is going to come up with its own warehouse and distribution network channels in the Middle East market, which is another huge development. segment and we'll be able to achieve the impending growth in this category as well.
PM: What are the different ranges of Kraft Paper supplied by you? How do you foresee the future trends of the Kraft Paper industry? AG: With respect to the kraft paper segment, we offer a range of – fluting paper, test liner, kraft liner, core board, white top kraft liner, and virgin kraft

I•N•T•E•R•V•I•E•W liner. At the moment, we are also trying our hands and exploring the opportunities for the paper bag industry which will substitute the plastic bags in the market. In the commitment towards the common goal of a world without plastic, kraft paper emerges as a viable, sustainable, and effective alternative. The future of the packaging industry is expected to be largely defined by honeycomb kraft paper - one of the very few eco-friendly alternatives to bubble wraps. The base product of honeycomb is kraft paper, and its GSM range varies between 80-200 GSM, depending upon the kind of products that needs to be packed inside that particular honeycomb. All in all, the kraft paper industry has a promising growth potential in the paperbased/sustainable packaging industry.
PM: Please talk about the USPs, and applications of the MG Poster paper. AG: In the MG Paper/Tissue segment, there are different varieties of paper – coloured poster papers and white poster papers. The coloured poster papers are used for a number of applications in packaging such as bangles, textiles and fruits which are not directly consumed, but washed or processed before consumption. However, the type of MG poster paper depends upon the preference of the market. For instance, Turkey tends to use blood-red poster paper with 30 GSM and African countries use pinkish-red poster paper with the range between 22-24 GSM.
In Case You Know Fishing
Likewise, the white MG food-grade poster paper with 18-22 GSM is majorly used for food items which are directly consumed. We specialise both in the virgin as well as recycled poster paper grades. The recycled poster paper has a huge growth potential.
PM: What challenges do you face in the supply chain and how do you overcome them? AG: We are quite pleased with the government's active role and participation. There are no tariff duties but incentives on the exports. The only challenge is with respect to shipping. The freight costs have risen sharply, almost 4 or 5 times higher than the usual costs which have made the trade scenario very difficult. Nonetheless, we believe that these challenges should get resolved very soon. With time, the market is getting matured. Further, m a ny re n ow n e d co m p a n i e s a re foraying into the Indian market which is a favourable sign. The product quality in the domestic industry is also getting enhanced.
PM: Has there been any recent development at Knam Marketing that you wish to talk about? AG: Recently, there have been two major developments at the company. First and foremost, Knam Marketing is no more an indentor but a trader. Through the years, we've been able to establish a robust reach at a global level, by setting up our offices globally. We have established our own waste

paper packaging plants in various countries which is one of the USPs of our company. These developments mark as some of the most promising and significant accomplishments for us. In addition, with respect to the finished paper supplies, Knam Marketing is going to come up with its own warehouse and distribution network channels in the Middle East market, which is another huge development. Besides, the company has also started supplying to war-zone countries where trade is not very easy as regards exports, such as – Syria, Yemen, etc. The second major development at the company is that we have shifted to our new corporate office.
PM: What are the future roadmap and growth strategies of the company? AG: The growth strateg y of the company is to cater to waste paper at least a million tonnes a year and export a minimum of half a million tonnes of finished paper out from India. Moving ahead, we will focus on promoting the reach of Indian products – that is the vision of the company and we are working hard to actualise this vision.
PM: What are your views on the current scenario of the Indian paper and paper packaging industry? Do you have any suggestions for the government? AG: With the growth in the packaging industry which spans almost every industry segment, the rise of sustainable packaging is also projected. The only viable alternative to conventional packaging materials – be it glass, wood, or plastic – is paper packaging. That is a promising prospect for the paper industry. The only thing that I wish to add to the conversation is that the government should play an even vital role in promoting the recycling of paper as opposed to the already prevalent virgin fibers in the paper industry. Nevertheless, I also believe that the government is already taking proper steps in this direction.

Pulp Moulded Product:
An Environmentally Sustainable Solution that’s here to Stay popular and the introduction of natural fiber or pulp-based alternatives is proving to be a game-changer in the region. The changing economic situation, rise in personal disposable income, environmental awareness, and legislature requirements is propelling the demand for pulp-based packaging the tableware solutions. By industry estimates, this segment is set to grow at a CAGR of 7-8 percent for the next five years.

ackaging came as an answer to our changing lifestyle needs where quick-fix solutions were required to meet the pace and convenience of the large urban population. Solutions offered by various polymers were fast adopted across industries and we became totally dependent on these solutions for the convenience they offered before we could even realise. Now, as awareness about the environment is growing globally, the stakeholders including – the industry, governments, and people in general, remain keen to adopt solutions that are more environmentally sustainable, while still retaining the convenience value. Bio-polymers and natural fiberbased packaging solutions have come out as a strong alternative to conventional products and continue to make inroads in various industry segments. Disposable food packaging and tableware take up a huge segment of the market share, where conventional polymer-based solutions had been

Moulded pulp -based packaging solutions have penetrated the sustainable packaging industry and are gaining popularity in the following product segments including: Ÿ Plates, platters, trays, Ÿ Cups, Ÿ Bowls, Ÿ Straws, and Ÿ QSR Packaging Most of the pulp for disposable pulp is sourced from agricultural residue and can be sourced from –bagasse, cornstarch, sugarcane, and bamboo. Today, we can easily find the above pulp moulded products available over the counter in major brick-and-mortar stores and on online e-commerce platforms. Commercial establishments including hotels, restaurants, and party caterers have been quick to adopt this solution.
Competitive Landscape of Pulp Moulded Tableware The supply side of disposable pulp moulded tableware is highly fragmented by both size and number of players. There are a number of small, medium, and large suppliers that remain present across India and increasingly penetrating into
I•N•D•U•S•T•R•Y W•A•T•C•H regional markets. Smaller players are more focussed on design innovations and customized solutions to establish them in this segment. Developed markets across North America and Europe, having much deeper penetration of moulded pulpbased tableware, also present opportunities for medium and large-scale Indian manufacturers to present their products in the export markets.
Intrinsic Requirement of Indian Pulp Mould Market As Indian cuisine remains unique so does the requirement to pack and serve its food. With most Indian food items, being high in oil and water content, and are served hot, it becomes imperative for the pulp moulded solutions to provide resistance on account of oil, grease, and moisture, failing which, it may be more suitable for dry food contents. FDAapproved f luoro-chemistry-based additives come to the rescue here and are able to inculcate oil and water resistance properties in moulded pulp in food
packing items making them more apt for Indian market needs. We have already witnessed the growing adoption of such additives by Indian moulded pulp packaging and food consumption item manufacturers for the last few years now; still, ample scope in the non-regulated market remains to shift to more environmentally friendly alternatives. With the adoption of the legislature at various state government levels to discourage single-use plastics usage, the market for moulded pulp products is set to grow exponentially.
New Generation Offering of Non-Fluoro Based Solutions and Phasing out of PFAS As the Indian market continues to witness greater penetration of fluorochemistry-based additives for moulded pulp tableware and food consumption items; more mature markets of the West have lately introduced alternatives to PFAS (per and poly-f luoroalkyl substances), and are looking to adopt
these new generation offering to achieve required oil, grease, and moisturebarrier properties. Lately, large-scale manufacturers of pulp moulded tableware, packaging, and food-consuming items in India have been introduced to these newgeneration offerings as it generates keen interest from the industry considering the PFAS production phase-out timeline of December 2023. The said production phase-out timeline has been voluntarily decided and committed collectively by leading global PFAS producers (for food contact application). DAIKIN Inc, USA, and KPL International Ltd, India have been collaborating to provide unique and proven solutions for the growing requirements of the moulded pulp tableware and packaging industry segment helping the domestic industry achieve specific requirements to make their products worthwhile and compliant to Indian and global customer needs. DAIKIN is a global leader in the fluorochemical products industry. n

T•E•C•H - T•A•L•K ANDRITZ engineers are continually seeking ways to make products better – through design, manufacturing methods, and/or materials of construction. The introduction of the TwinFlo Prime refiner illustrates this point. Mr. Peter Ortner, ANDRITZ Product Manager, inspecting the first TwinFlo Prime refiner manufactured at the ANDRITZ workshop in Graz
The Latest Advancement in LC Refiners: TwinFlo Prime Makes its Debut
T
he ANDRITZ TwinFlo refiner is well established and proven, with over 2,000 LC refiners operating around the world, and it is a known benchmark when it comes to refiner technology. The TwinFlo is a single-disc refiner with refining zones on both sides of the
disc. The accepted state-of-the-art for adjusting the refining plate gap is to allow the rotor disc to “float” on the spline shaft, centering itself axially between the stator discs. A series of m a c h i n e d ke y w ay s a ro u n d t h e circumference of the shaft serves to guide the disc as it floats on the shaft.
This works well for most applications, but there are occasions where chemical deposits in the process water tend to scale up in the keyway guides and prevent the rotor disc from floating freely. When this happens, the energy input becomes imbalanced and the refiner plates suffer uneven wear. The corrective action is to replace the plates and manually scrape the deposits out of the keyway guides – a cumbersome, expensive, and time -consuming activity.
Making the Connection For the new TwinFlo Prime refiner, designers at ANDRITZ have arrived at a better way to adjust the refining gap and eliminate the problems associated with deposit build-up in the keyways. The solution is to connect the rotor disc directly to the shaft so that the entire shaft and disc float as a single unit. This is the primary advancement in the TwinFlo Prime LC refiner.
The new TwinFlo Prime LC refiner

T•E•C•H - T•A•L•K result is poor refining performance and unnecessary plate wear. The TwinFlo Prime has a viscous dampening mechanism inside the bearing that absorbs these initial forces and prevents fast movement of the shaft during the initial high flow at start-up. Simplified operation and maintenance: Eliminating oil contamination from a bearing that may leak is a major positive for operation and maintenance. In addition, the design of the new refiner significantly reduces the time required to dismantle the unit for a bearing change or to access key components. The bearing unit has a cartridge design for ease of changing out.

is it possible to secure the rotor disc on the shaft as this type of bearing allows considerable movement in axial direction.
more power, improving specific refining performance significantly. Thus, it's possible to install smaller refiners in the same application.
A Range of Benefits
Optimized pulp flows: Simplifying the connection between rotor disc and shaft creates an opportunity to enlarge the disc port openings by about 70%, improving the pulp flow and equalizing the distribution of stock suspension as it splits between the two refining zones.
Not only does the fixed connection between rotor disc and shaft in the new refiner improve its ability to maintain an optimum plate gap, it contributes several other key benefits, too: Compact size: The length of the TwinFlo Prime is approximately 30% shorter than conventional TwinFlo models. Since no lubricating oil is used for the bearing, there is no risk of oil contaminating the stock in the event of a leak. Hence, there is no longer any need for a separate mechanical seal. The bearing can be situated closer to the rotating disc, shortening the overall shaft length considerably. Papermakers will appreciate the simplified equipment layout, easier transport and installation, and more space for maintenance that the smaller footprint of the TwinFlo Prime provides. Increased energy efficiency: With the bearing unit closer to the rotating disc, shaft strength and machine stiffness are improved significantly. This enables the TwinFlo Prime to handle about 25%
Dampening mechanism: Starting up a refiner creates significant force as stock rushes in and pushes forcefully against the rotor disc. This pushing force can sometimes be sufficient to close the refining gap on one side of the disc so that the rotor disc is no longer able to float back and center itself. The
Simple mechanical seals are now used, and the seal also has a cartridge design for easy replacement. The work can be done without having to lift the refiner or drive unit off its foundation. The even distribution of stock and uniform application of power eliminate one-sidedness in refiner plate wear. This extends plate life and reduces downtime for changes.
Summary The fixed connection between rotor disc and shaft in the TwinFlo Prime improves the way the refining gap is adjusted and eliminates potential problems due to deposits building up in the floating mechanism. In addition, it offers several key benefits: a much more compact size, increased energy efficiency, higher possible installed motor power, optimized pulp flows in the refiner, increased plate life, and easier maintenance. n

ITC's paperboard, paper and packaging division saw a 25 percent jump YoY in Q2FY22 to INR 1,830 crore; while segment profits (at a profit before tax level) rose 24 percent YoY to INR 409 crore.
Also, investments made in pulp import substitution (at Bhadrachalam), cost-competitive fiber chain, a sharper focus on operational efficiency by leveraging data analytics, and Industry 4.0 enabled margin expansion despite the escalation in key input prices.
Paperboard, paper and packaging divisions contribute around 14 percent to gross revenues and approximately 8 – 10 percent of the bottom line (before tax). Speaking on the current industry scenario, Mr. Vadiraj Kulkarni, Divisional Chief Executive, Paperboards and Specialty Papers
Mr. Kulkarni further added, ''ITC's strategy is to develop new and superior products, in collaboration with the value chain partners (customers, printers, converters etc.). And once we scale up, these offerings will contribute significantly to our topline growth and will become margin accretive.'' n

N•E•W•S his thorough support and cooperation in the matter. While IPMA is the apex and national level body which represents the interests and development of the paper industry in the country, IARPMA is the exclusive apex body of paper mills based on waste paper (recycled fiber) and agricultural residues such as biogases, wheat straw, rice straw, jute, and grasses, etc.
A while ago, IPMA, in its pre-budget consultation with the Ministry of Finance, had emphasized on the importance of raw material security as a necessary element for the paper industry to become self-reliant. The assertion was further supported with the request to the government to consider its proposal for allowing pulpwood plantation in degraded forest land and non-forest government land near paper mills. n

he European paper industry fully supports the EU ambition of making Europe the world's first climate-neutral continent by 2050 and building a European circular economy. The carbon neutrality objective requires the European pulp and paper industry to become even more sustainable, efficient and innovative. It demands that we continue on our transformational journey, while maintaining our international competitiveness. Forest fiber and paper-based products offer alternatives to fossil-based ones which are coming from renewable sources, are recyclable, and contribute to trapping carbon pulled out of the atmosphere by trees. This supposes large investments in green technologies over the coming

N•E•W•S years, an area where forest fiber and paper producers are already ahead of other sectors of the EU's manufacturing industry. The pledge has been taken by the industry as a whole, covering diverse products and materials made in the sector. Cepi, as the organisation representing the industry at EU level, will also leverage its existing networks within users of paper and forest fiber products, including many major companies with a global footprint. This will ensure that the pledge gains enough traction and has a real impact on climate neutrality, resource efficiency and circularity. The new commitment is based upon three main pillars:
Ÿ The achievement of full circularity performance for paperbased products and packaging.
Ÿ The acceleration of innovation to replace fossil-based materials.
Ÿ Ensuring responsible sourcing for paper-based products and packaging. In total, sixteen pledges are included across these pillars, four of which are quantitative. In particular: The industry is pledging to have, by 2025, 80 percent of the wood, chips and sawmilling by-products purchased by the industry originating from forest certified to be sustainably managed. The industry is committed to offer fiber-based solutions to the market to enable replacing at least 25 percent of current plastic packaging by 2025. Current recycling champion, the industry is willing to raise the bar to meet 76 percent paper recycling and 90 percent fiber-based packaging recycling rates by 2030. Adopt design guidelines for 100 percent paper-based products and packaging to be recyclable by 2025 and reusable in case it is useful and possible. n

Paper Industry Urges Government to Allow Pulpwood Plantation in Degraded Land With the objective to enable the paper industry on a path to be self-reliant and resolve the raw material availability issues, IPMA insists the government for allowing pulpwood plantation in degraded land and available land near mills. November 29, 2021
T
he Indian paper industry, which has been going through inadequate raw material availability, has requested the government to allow pulpwood plantations on degraded forest land and non-forest government land near paper mills. This move would also help increase the green cover in the country. In its pre-budget submission to the Ministry of Finance, the Indian Paper Manufacturers Association (IPMA) stated that raw material security is necessary for the paper industry to become self-reliant. The argument was further supported with the request to the government asking to consider its proposal for allowing pulpwood plantation in degraded land. As per the statement by IPMA, being a wood fiber-deficient country, inadequate raw material availability is a major constraint for the domestic paper industry in meeting the growing demand for paper led by drivers such as growth in the education sector and discouraging use of single-use plastic. Mr. A S Mehta, President, IPMA, said, "We sincerely want the government to consider our proposal of offering degraded land to the industry for pulpwood plantation. Restoration of degraded land through plantation by the paper industry could help India meet its target of increasing green cover in the country and make India a world leader in paper manufacturing." Calling the proposed plan a "win-win" situation, he further explained that the implementation of this idea will lead to the greening of India, unlocking the significant potential for employment generation, especially in rural areas. As per the views shared by IPMA, the organised paper

industry has invested around INR 25,000 crore in the past few years but raw material constraints are putting a spanner in the works. "Current demand for wood, one of the key raw materials, by India's paper industry is about 11 million tonnes per annum (TPA), against domestic availability of nine million TPA, and is projected to rise to 15 million TPA by 2024-25 at the current rates of growth," it said. "India's paper industry looks forward to partnering in building Green India and contributing to the national objective of bringing 33 percent of the landmass in India under tree cover," it said. The paper industry has brought around 1.2 million hectares of land under plantations through industry-driven agro/farm forestry, said IPMA adding that India's paper industry is woodpositive as it plants more trees than it harvests. n

DGTR Proposes Continuation of Existing Anti-dumping Duty on Uncoated Copier Paper for Next Two Years In the Sunset Review anti-dumping investigation concerning imports of “Uncoated Copier Paper” originating in or exported from Indonesia and Singapore, the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), in its Final Findings dated November 26, 2021 has recommended continuation of existing definitive antidumping duty for further period of two years. November 29, 2021
A
n anti-dumping investigation concerning imports of uncoated copier paper originating – in or exported from Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia, was initiated by the Designated Authority. The Authority notified the final findings on 30th October 2018 recommending definitive anti-dumping duty on the imports of the subject goods from the subject countries. The definitive anti-dumping duty on the subject goods imported from the subject countries was imposed for a period of three years. According to the published report – the Authority notes that the sunset review was initiated and notified to all the interested parties and adequate opportunity was given to the domestic industry, exporters, importers/users and the other interested parties to provide information on the aspects of dumping, injury and causal link and the likelihood of continuation or recurrence of dumping and injury. Having initiated and conducted the sunset review into dumping, injury and causal link and the likelihood of continua-

tion or recurrence of dumping and injury in terms of the provisions laid down under the rules, the Authority is of the view that continued imposition of anti-dumping duty is required on the subject goods from the subject countries. Under these circumstances, the Authority, thus, considers it necessary to recommend continuation of existing definitive anti-dumping duty imposed vide Notification no. 56/2018-
R
N•E•W•S Customs dated 4th December 2018 for a further period of two years from the date of notification to be issued in this regard by the Central Government. DGTR has recommended the duty after establishing in its probe that the dumping of uncoated paper (A4, A3 & FS Legal Size under heading number 4802) from Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore are having an impact on domestic players. Further, DGTR has recommended anti-dumping of the difference between the landed value of the product and USD 855 per tonne as mentioned in the report. As per the report – the product under consideration continues to be exported to India at prices below normal value resulting in continued dumping. The volume of imports has declined because of anti-dumping duty. However, the volume of import is likely to increase significantly, considering the dumped and injurious price at which goods have been exported from Indonesia to third countries, high export orientation, significant surplus capacities in Indonesia. It is evident that the dumping of the product is likely to continue and the volume of imports is likely to increase significantly in the event of cessation of anti-dumping duties. The report further states that in the event of expiry of antidumping duty, there is a clear possibility of dumping in
significant volumes and consequent injury to the domestic industry. Indonesia is one of the largest producers of the subject goods. There are significant unutilized capacities in Indonesia, sufficient to cater to entire Indian demand. Significant exports to third countries have been made by the producers at prices below the level of selling price, noninjurious price of the domestic industry and third country prices. It is also seen that various countries have imposed trade remedial measures on subject goods from Indonesia. Further, the Authority notes that fair competition in the Indian market will not be reduced by the continuation of the antidumping measures. On the contrary, continuation of antidumping measures would remove the unfair advantages gained by dumping practices and prevent the decline of the domestic industry and help maintain availability of wider choice to the consumers of the subject goods. The purpose of anti- dumping duties, in general, is to eliminate injury caused to the domestic industry by the unfair trade practices of dumping so as to re-establish a situation of open and fair competition in the Indian market, which is in the general interest of the country. From the information submitted by the domestic industry, it is noted that the imposition of duties has benefitted the producers of the subject goods. n

Metsä Board Approaching its Fossil Free Target at its Kyro Mill in Finland With dedicated investments in the power plant, the mill will be moving away from peat to achieve its fossil free goal. November 25, 2021
T
he Hämeenkyrön Voima power plant, from which Metsä Board's Kyro mill buys energy, has replaced the peat it burns with renewable energy. In the future, the power plant aims to use wood-based fuels from Metsä Group's production and wood procurement by-products. By not burning peat, Metsä Board Kyro's share of fossil fuels in total fuel demand will be reduced from just over a quarter to about a tenth. The phase-out of peat has required significant investments in power plant technology to control boiler corrosion damage and optimise running conditions. Previously approximately one fifth of the fuel used by the plant has been peat. Thanks to the investments, the energy and local district heat from the mill will be produced in a more environmentally friendly way.

Kellogg's planning to trial Recyclable Paper Liners in Cereal Boxes Kellogg Company will determine how it transforms its packaging further going forward, based on the success of this pilot project. This could involve trying to transition to recyclable at kerbside plastic liners – which are currently available in Ireland and Belgium. December 9, 2021
U
S-based food manufacturing company Kellog's, in partnership with Tesco, is going to pilot recyclable paper liners for its cereal boxes in a select number of stores from January 2022. As per the multinational company, the plastic inner liner in cereal boxes is not currently widely accepted in kerbside recycling. The new paper liner is recyclable and will make Kellogg's entire cereal packaging paper-based, as the cereal's outer card packaging is already fully recyclable. Moreover, the new packaging, designed by Kellogg's packaging technologists, will be more suitable for the process of filling and sealing bags inside of cereal boxes that takes place at the company's factory, as well as for transporting the cereal to retailers. Kellogg's says that the results of the pilot will determine how it adapts its packaging going forward. This could involve trying to transition to recyclable at kerbside plastic liners – which are already available in Ireland and Belgium – or rolling out fully paper-based packaging. Previously, Tesco and Kellogg's have worked together on a few sustainability initiatives including a trial to collect cartons at instore recycling points, which provided a short-term recycling

Stora Enso launches Bio-Based Packaging Foam With bio-based foams, the Finnish paper and packaging company is introducing “renewable and climate-friendly alternatives” in the protective packaging segment. December 9, 2021
S
tora Enso is expanding its packaging products with a new portfolio of bio-based foams – Fibrease and Papira – made from Forest Stewardship Council-approved wood. The company says the FSC-certified products, which it has tested at real recycling facilities, are fully recyclable and can be used for protective and thermal packaging. Papira, a fiber-based monomaterial designed to be biodegradable and compostable, can be recycled with paper or cardboard, that way the material can be used to make new paper products and ensure optimal use of resources. Fibrease can be recycled in any paper or board stream. While Fibrease is already commercially available, the pilot plant producing Papira has started operations at the Fors site in Sweden, as a subsequent step to the investment announced in August 2020. Firstly, the pilot plant is intending to evaluate and validate Papira as packaging foam in customer tests. Later on, the foams can be used for protecting fragile goods and will be optimal for the thermal packaging of temperature-sensitive products.
Papira is a fiber-based monomaterial and Fibrease can be recycled in any paper or board stream.
According to Stora Enso, fossil-fuel-based packaging is a major contributor to pollution, accounting for 40 percent of the world's plastics. “With Fibrease and Papira”, the globally leading renewable solutions provider of packaging, biomaterials, wooden constructions, and paper, says it is introducing “renewable and climate-friendly alternatives” to the fossil-fuelbased protective packaging. n
Smurfit Kappa Invests in Sustainable Water Treatment Facility in Colombia The wastewater treatment plant uses modern technology which includes a circular self-sustaining anaerobic reactor. December 15, 2021
E
urope's leading corrugated sustainable packaging provider Smurfit Kappa has completed a two-phase upgrade of its facilities at the Barranquilla Paper Mill in Colombia. The USD 7.5 million investments included the implementation of a wastewater treatment plant with state-ofthe-art anaerobic technology, which performs two key functions – reduction of intake from the nearby Magdalena River and improvement of the quality of water returned to it. The upgradation of the facilities enables the Barranquilla site, which produces containerboard from 100 percent recycled materials, to contribute towards Smurfit Kappa's ambitious sustainability targets that were revised in January this year. These include water quality targets to further reduce water intake and improve water intensity and usage. Specifically, this includes targets to reduce the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) of the water by 60 percent by 2025 and to reduce water intensity by 1 percent annually. It is estimated that the COD at the plant will reduce by 80 percent as a direct result of this investment.

In addition, the facility will also generate biogas which will help to improve energy efficiency and reduce the need for external power sources. Barranquilla is the most recent example and part of a wider investment programme taking place across Smurfit Kappa paper mills in Colombia. Other investments include – upgrades to facilities at the Barbosa and Cali paper plants. n

PulPac Expands Global IP for Dry Molded Fiber The patented DMF technology consumes lesser energy and water as compared to traditional fiber-forming methods, in addition to significantly lowering carbon dioxide while enabling high-speed production of fiber-based packaging. December 15, 2021
P
ulPac has announced further patent grants for its pioneering cellulose forming technology that makes it possible to replace single-use plastics with competitive fiberbased alternatives in sustainable packaging. The company's most general patent, which already has been granted in big parts of the world, is now also granted in Colombia. Furthermore, a new patent comprising hole punching of Dry Molded Fiber products has been granted in Sweden. The granted patent in Colombia fortifies PulPac's global ownership of the core technology of Dry Molded Fiber (DMF). The patent relates to a method, apparatus, and product where air-formed cellulose is pressed in a forming mould within given temperature and pressure intervals and has already been granted on important markets such as China, Europe, USA, Japan, and Russia. Compared to traditional fiber forming methods the DMF technology consumes less energy and water in addition to significantly lowering CO2 while enabling high-speed production of fiber-based packaging. It can be used for forming

cellulose products in a wide variety of shapes, at costs that are competitive with plastics. PulPac has also been granted a patent in Sweden relating to a system and a method for dry forming a three-dimensional cellulose product using PulPac's unique DMF technology. The patent is especially directed towards a moulding feature allowing for punching one or more holes in the product already in the forming mould. This is advantageous when manufacturing lids for hot or cold drinks but can also be used in other applications. n
Ban on Recovered Paper Imports from EU a Clerical Error: India According to the reports, it was not the intention of the Govt. of India to ban recovered paper imports from the EU — rather it was a clerical error. November 1, 2021
T
he Indian Embassy has contacted the European Commission and confirmed that a clerical error was made that meant it accidentally banned recovered paper imports from the EU. As per a leading daily — the European Commission had published a response from India that recovered paper imports were banned. As a result, by default, it became illegal to export cardboard and paper from the EU to India for recycling. The response was one of the elements fed into the drafting of the new EU Regulation 2021/1840 adopted last week. It updates the rules for shipments of green-listed wastes for recovery from the EU to countries which are not members of the OECD. However, the European Recycling Industries' Confederation (EuRIC) has confirmed that the entry prohibiting Basel Convention code B3020 materials was a mistake. The EU Commission now plans to launch a “corrigendum procedure” for the Regulation once an official written request is received from India. However, this correction procedure is expected to take between six and eight weeks. This process could take several weeks and effectively means a pause in EU exports of recovered paper. Exports can still take place from

Great Britain, but as Northern Ireland remains part of the EU Single Market, exports cannot take place from there. The Indian paper sector relies on imported recovered paper for raw material, and in the first half of this year, India was the most important destination market for EU exports. The monthly EU exports to India ranged from 66,000 tonnes in May to about 150,000 tonnes in March. The largest volumes of recovered paper headed to that country came from Spain, Italy and the Netherlands. n
