istorically, the primary concern for businesses

Hwas profit. Today, companies in every sectorare inclining towards 'Environmental and Social Sustainability' bybecoming increasinglyenvironmentally concerned and socially involved. While sustainability is oneof thedriving factorsforalmostall firms, measuring it can be extremely complex. In order to measure sustainability, the companies are now trying to develop toolswithinthe'TripleBottomLine'concept.

The triple bottom line approach, popularised by John Elkington, in the 1990s, focuses on social and environmental concerns as much as financial objectives. It ensuresthatthecompaniesbehaveresponsiblyinrelation tothe3Ps:People,PlanetandProfit.

The triple bottom line concept is extremely important for paper mills as the industry not only needs a higher workforce but also uses a lot of energy and water. Talking about the triple bottom line at a recently held conference, Mr. SVR Krishnan, Executive Director (Operations), TNPL said, “We believe that if we takecareof people, they will takecareof the planetand both of thesewill takecare of our profit”. According to Mr. Ashish De, Advisor and Consultant, “To sustain in business, the industry just cannotgrowonlyforestorsecurerawmaterialtheyhaveto 'GrowPeople'seriously.”

Paper mills are increasingly investing in recruitment, training, orientation and empowerment of their employees. Withagro/farmforestryprograms, theindustryis not only turning unproductive land into pulpwood plantations but also generating an income source for farmers. Moreover, thepapermillsareengagingwithlocalcommunitiesfortheupliftmentof peopleundertheirvariousCSR initiatives.

India has set a global example with a ban on single-use plastic to combat pollution. Being a truly sustainable product, paper can replace single-use plastic in most applicationssuchaspaperbags, straws, and cutlery. Made fromwastepaper, wood, oragricultural residue, thepaper is renewable, reusable, & recyclable. Meanwhile, technology & automation is further making the process of

papermaking more environment-friendly. While most of themillscomplywithalltheenvironmental norms, others are trying to follow in their footsteps by adopting similar technologies.

Mr.Varun Jain, Director, IndiaRegionof Valmet, aleading developer and supplier of technologies, automation, and services for the pulp & paper industry said, “Technology plays a key role in mitigating climate change and global warming in the transition to a carbon-neutral economy. This iswhywe havecreated anambitiousclimateprogram − Forward to a carbon-neutral future − which continues our comprehensive sustainability work. Our climate program includes ambitious CO emission reduction2 targets and concrete actions for the whole value chain, including the supply chain, our own operations, and customers'useofourtechnologies.”

Besides using technologies that are energy-efficient and safe for the environment, the paper industry is utilising optimal fossil fuels, recycling all the waste that is generated, reusing & recyclingwaterand moderating itscarbon footprint to build resistance to climate change. Mills are increasinglybecomingwoodandcarbonpositive.

Pulp & paper is a capital-intensive industry. In order to remainefficient, itneedstoupgradetechnologyfromtime to time. Hence, it is important for paper mills to remain profitable as financial robustness lubricates all the other businessarms, strengtheningsustainability.

As an industry committed to the triple bottom line, the papermillsneed tolookatprofitsintermsof notjustwhat they can do for stakeholders, but also how they can help the broader community. The amount under Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR) isallocatedandutilised bythe mills in areas of education, healthcare, sanitation, rural development, etc., with an aim to give back to society and touchpeople'slives.

Paper Mart interacted with a few people in the paper industry to understand their triple bottom line approach and how they integrate the same in their way of doing their respectivebusinesses.

‘People, Planet and Profit' - I believe, if the first two pillars are well taken care of, the third pillar will be automatically strong enough, though there are few other variables to take care of. The Pulp and Paper (P&P) industry leaders know that it is of low glamour, low revenue generation for the government, and the challenges are many, such as remote location with 24x7 job demand with poor quality of 'Post work life', insecurity in raw material availability, absence of technology in domestic arena, high investment & low return, etc. But it is a core industry, hence has no threat to get evaporated like many other industries. So how to face the challenges mentioned above? Let me share my thoughts keeping focus on the topic:

‘Triple Bottom Line’ in Pulp and Paper Industry

PE OPLE

he legendary American industrialist & philanthropist

Tof the 19th Century, Mr. Andrew Carnegie used to say often,“Takeawaymypeople, butleavemyfactoriesand soon grass will grow on the factory floors…… Take away my factories, but leave mypeopleand soonwewill havea newand better factory”. No better way may be there to express the importanceof thepeopleforthesuccessof anyorganisation. It maybetrueformanyotherindustriesbutquiteappropriatefor thepaperindustry, asitneedsareasonablyhigherworkforce.

Due to the highly economical business growth in India since the beginning of this century, fresh talents have multiple opportunities, especially in urban sectors which are more attractive in many senses. But at the same time, the paper industryisfacinganacuteshortageof talentresources.

The absence of suitable institutes to deliver the right-fit talents to the paper industry is one of the major challenges being experienced in the last one decade or more. Withdrawalof themostscientificallydesignedcurriculumin P&P, coupled with global standard infrastructure by the Swedish P&P industry in collaboration with the visionary Indian paper industry stalwarts in the mid-sixties (1960) is certainly the most disastrous event that happened in the history of Indian Paper Industry. The course in IPT Saharanpur was meticulously designed to create future decision-makers in the pulp and paper industry. Few institutes, at present, are trying to cater the entry-level candidates but most of these candidates are entering with very low basic knowledge and skills to cope with the current challenging technological demand. It may be due to the lack of good faculties and/or infrastructures prevailing in their institutes. Industry leaders must look into this issue very seriouslyASAPtoreviveIPTSaharanpur.

The P&P industrywill notgetvanished like manyothers that happened due to lifestyle changes. Shortage of talent availabilityisthemajorchallengebeingfacedbytheindustry. To sustain in business, the industry just cannot grow only forest or secure raw material they have to “Grow People” seriously. Not all organisation has structured training policies to develop people; hence many of them believe that

14 | www.papermart.in / August - September, 2022 SPECIALFEATURE ••••••••••••

“Poaching” talents from peer industry may theonlysolution. Serious training modules, both technical and attitudinal, for the fresh graduates, must be opted to remain competitive. Right-Fit people in leadership positions make the organisation profitable and sustainable. The leaders should keep developingtheirreplacementsonacontinuousbasis.

Lastly, theP&Pindustryisnotrocketscience.Wedonotneed too many 'generals' in the team. What we need is a strong dedicated workforce with a regimental attitude and a strong character. I will not be surprised if I see the retired army people taking over the operation and maintenance of P&P Millsinnearfuture.

PLAN T

As such, the P&P industry is already ill-famous as 'an environment spoiler, though there are some incorrect perceptions created by the anti-paper lobby for their own sustainability. But it cannot be ignored that many of the paper mills have the least respect for environmental sustainability. Everything cannot be established by legislation, there must be sufficient concerns for the environment. The legendary Henry Ford well said – “A business that makes nothingbutmoneyisapoorbusiness”.

When we are so committed to investing in hi-tech plants

and machinery, thereshould beample focuson investing to protect the environment. Do we have the right to leave the planet in spoiled condition for our future generations? The time has come to become a bit more serious to protect our planet. It is everyone's concern, not limited to only a few large business corporations and the government. To become a sustainable organisation, one has to put the environmental issue at the top – be it technology selection, plant design, product design, or waste handling. There is tremendous opportunity in the paper industry in the next couple of decades, especially who are in the packaging grades. Do some innovation to get into the bio-degradable packaginggrade.

Environment-friendly product & technology has already become the buzzword. We should not wait for the harsh decisionof thelegislationtogetoutof business.

PROFIT

Certainly, profit is not the dirtiest word in business. But all our decisions should not start only with the word “Profit”. If your Business Strategy is correct, and you can execute it reasonably well, the number (Profit) will follow. Quite often wesee many business housessoobsessed with Q by Q profit, they deviate from the strategy - “in all short, medium and long term” and thereby face additional challenges to sustain inthecompetitivebusinessworld.

www.papermart.in / August - September, 2022 | 15 SPECIALFEATURE ••••••••••••

Every Quarter may not be the same due to innumerable variables beyond your control. The well-made strategy and smart execution plan will help you to make a very robust profit in good market conditions and will not take you to RED in not-so-good market conditions. Investment in the right technology, even though it may be priced a little higher, often results in higher value. One has to foresee –“ValueoverPrice”.

How many times do we focus on the plant and performance efficiency? Selection of good and contemporary technology will help you to stretch plant efficiency beyond 100 percent designcapacityascommitted bythestandard global vendors

andonehastoensurethaticingonthecake.

How well “Automation” is perceived by your team?

Automation is notsimplya method toreducepeople. In fact, many times we see no reduction of people through automation but may require a couple more engineers. Can you convince your valued customers with inconsistent product qualityand deliverywhich is common in absenceof automation? Right technology selection in automation backed by a few smart automation engineers will improve not only the quality and consistency of the product but will also improve the plant efficiency tremendously. Additional Profit will be recordedthroughthis. n

Historically, running a business meant having the 3Ps in place. That is Product, Price, and Place. All marketing books, gurus, and companies had a simple focus – create the best product in the market, make it available at the lowest possible price and promote it so businesses can make profits. Businesses operated in service solely to their financial bottom line.

However, the triple bottom line theory is a sustainability framework that examines a company's social, environmental, and economic impact. Today, organisations know that success is not just

reflected in their profit and loss statements. Rather, to get an accurate, wellrounded perspective of their operations and relationships with the environment, community, and economy, organisations must fully account for all costs associated with doing business by going beyond compliance.

We, at SKPM, have never believed in turnovers & profits only. Since my father began this company in 1975, he has always focused on quality products, research & developments, innovations, making products that are virgin to India, and employee welfare.

irst of all, people do not only mean employees. For

FSKPM, people include employees, families, customers, suppliers, communities, and any other person influencing or being affected by the organisation. We feel that we are fair and ethical in our conduct. The average employee tenure in our company is 12+ years. There are employees working for 40 years and we are indebted to them fortheirservice.

Again, most people would say your planet only includes what you are doing in business and what positive impact you have had on it. But forSKPM – we measuretheplanet in terms of reducing its carbon footprint, usage of natural resources, reducing toxic materials, etc. We are the only company in India to introduce the PACKMATE Natural Brown A4 copier and notebooks. Mr. Ganesh Bhadti, Chairman, PaperTech 2022 and Director (Operations) Seshasayee Paper and Boards Ltd. set the tone for the proceedings and said, “The industry is highly fragmented and diversified. Even though it is using water and energy to a large extent, a lot of technologies are now coming up to address these issues and help us for the sustainability of the paper industry. If we look at the demand drivers, there are significant factors like rising income and per capita

expenditure. The literacy level is going up and the government has taken initiatives to ban plastic. There is a good future for the paper industry but at the same time, we are facing a lot of challenges due to the recent pandemic and the ongoing RussiaUkraine war. The energy cost has increased up to three times. The price is rising every day. In this situation, there is a need to switch over and globally, we have targets to achieve net zero emissions. Owing to the commitments at the national as well as the global level for the same, there will be an increase in renewable energy (bioenergy, solar, wind, etc.). In spite of the crisis, all the trends show that there will be a growth of about 16 percent in the paper industry in this net-zero period (by 2030)”.

Talking about the sustainability journey of the paper industry, Mr. Anil Kumar, Former Executive Director & CEO, Shreyans Industries Ltd. added, “India is now

like the fifth largest producer of paper.

As far as energy consumption is concerned, there were two things. One was the efforts made by the management and the technologies available. The second was the compulsion part. Once the energy became expensive, mills and management had no options but to conserve energy to be more efficient. From 151600 kWh per tonne of paper, the energy is around 700 kWh today; the water consumption has now reduced 3 3from 250 m to about 30-40 m per

tonne of paper. Meanwhile, steam consumption has also reduced from 12 tonnes to 7 tonnes per tonne of paper. Although the journey is good, the only thing is that a larger number of mills have to come on board to share these figures. There is no lack of technology as far as the environment is concerned. Moreover, the technologies are not only technically sound but also economically viable. Also, most of our fuels are biofuels and the used water goes for either plantation of trees or growing crops.”

Dr. Ashok Kumar, Executive Director, Pudumjee Paper Products Ltd. discussed, in brief, the journey of the paper industry in India, energy-efficient technologies, and emphasised supply chain collaboration. “We have many challenges, but still the biggest challenge remains the raw material; be it wood, bagasse, wheat straw, or waste paper, enough quantity is not available within the area where we are operating. So I think the mills should put a lot of effort into the raw materials like checking the quality of wood and working closely with the converters and brand owners. At the same time, the mill owners should take care of their people as well.”

Mr. Vadiraj Kulkarni, Divisional Chief Executive, ITC Ltd. (PSPD) added, “We need to set up capacities that can be consumed and not ahead of demand. Being world-class is not just about technology or machine because each of these requires a lot of capital investments. They have to raise those investments and also

deliver returns for a long period of time. According to me, we should define what world-class is, in our own capacities and then aim to become more competitive. Our machine capacities have been going up, which is good because the fixed costs come down, and energy and water efficiencies go up. A lot of new technologies in the power plant have also come up”. Elaborating on technology, he said “I would classify technology in three parts. One is on core technology for pulp, paper & energy making, emerging digital technologies, and emerging energy technologies.”

Talking about some of the energyefficient initiatives of ITC, he said, “We have installed some windmills close to its facilities. We have also set up onsite solar plants and we have recently commissioned higher efficiency recovery boilers, instead of solar recovery boilers, which operated at much higher temperatures and pressure. They cost a lot because these are all European technologies, but they're going to significantly reduce coal consumption. With this, the coal consumption in the next year would significantly come down to 15 percent.”

Discussing the concept of being world-class, Mr. A S Mehta, President, IPMA & President & Director, JK Paper Ltd. said, “We don't have thinking of a world-class industry. Most of the time, when we talk about the world-class, immediately we start thinking about the technology; the word class thought process or customer centricity in our industry is almost zero. How do we

become world-class if we are not customer-centric? So we need to think about this and we need to start practicing accordingly. There only, our roadmap for the world-class paper industry will start. The beginning should be customer centricity and the technology comes at the end. The customers' expectations should be met by the technology. In this connected world, if we don't start thinking about the other stakeholders, we'll be still missing the theme of being world-class.”

The inaugural session was followed by Session I on Cogeneration & Steam Systems which had Dr. Bipin Thapliyal, Secretary General, IARPMA, Mr. Rajnikanth, AGM Solution Sales (Process Industry) Armstrong International, Lt. Col. Monish Ahuja, Chairman & Managing Director, Punjab Renewable Energy Systems, Pvt. Ltd. (PRESPL), Dr. Sunil Kumar, Principal Scientist, CSIR Indian Institute of Petroleum, Mr. Vaibhav Girdhar, Senior Counsellor, CII – Godrej GBC as panelists.

The first session was followed by a panel discussion on 'Decarbonisation Roadmap and Role of ESG for the Indian Pulp & Paper Sector' and 'The Latest Technological Advancements in the Pulp & Paper Industry' subsequently.

The second day of the conference also had similar sessions wherein topics such as resource efficiency in small & medium paper mills, environment management, energy-saving & productivity improvement opportunities, and best operating practices were discussed. n

T(PTA), Nagpur conducted the 61st All India Paper Traders Conference of the Federation of Paper Traders Association of India (FPTA) in Nagpur from September 17-19. The event was inaugurated by the Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari. The keynote address was presented by Mr. Vijay Kaul, CEO, Century Pulp and Paper. Mr. A S Mehta, President & Director, JK Paper Ltd. and Mr. Vadiraj Kulkarni, Divisional Chief Executive, ITC PSPD, were the guests of honour while FPTA President Mr. Deepak Mittal gave the presidential address at the conference.

Mr. Ashish Khandelwal, President, PTA, Nagpur, set the tone of the proceedings as he gave the opening remarks at the conference. He said, “The paper industry including the paper packaging, paper trading, and various other segments are on a swift

growth path. Finally, I would like to say that the recommendations and ideas put forth by the dignitaries and the speakers at the conference today for furthering the growth of the trading industry and this association are definitely welcome and appreciated.”

Mr. Vijaykumar R. Khandelwal, Chairman, Reception Committee, FPTA, gave the welcome address at the event. He said, “As we are paper traders, I would like to emphasise that around 80 percent of the paper and paper products are manufactured from waste paper. It is our plea to paper manufacturers to increase the sourcing of waste papers domestically as much as possible so that we can reduce our dependence on imports. Since the government has imposed a ban on single-use plastics, the demand for paper will further increase. Today, the cost of raw materials like waste papers has increased, and even ensuring the availability of waste papers has become a challenge. I truly wish that our understanding and cooperation within the industry sustains.”

Mr. Deepak Mittal, President, FPTA, in his presidential address, said, “Today, India is becoming a key focus market for the global brands for – both domestic sales and export hub. It is a clear sign that India is finally making it big in the China+1 manufacturing plans of MNCs. Bob Sternfels, Global Managing Partner, McKinsey & Company, in a recent interview given to an Indian newspaper, said that India will be the world's future talent factory as it will have 20 percent of the world's workforce by 2047. He also added that it will not only be India's decade but India's century with all the key elements in place.

A large working population and multinational companies' reimagining of the global supply chains in a country leapfrogging at an enormous scale to achieve something special, not only for

the Indian economy but potentially for the world. This is the true emerging India@75!”

About the recent growth surge in the paper industry and the role of the paper traders, Mr. Mittal, informed, “The domestic paper companies are witnessing a growth surge that has never been seen before. The topline and bottomline growth has increased. The margins are good. The exports are at an all-time high. The prices have scaled new peaks and the gap between demand and supply is widening in the favour of the former. New capital investments are also being announced, which is a very good sign – both for the industry as well as the trade. The ban on singleuse plastics has also turned many applications toward paper, especially in the food service segment. As per the estimates, the opportunity for the paper and the paperboard segment in replacing single-use plastics is approximately 3-4 lakh tonne per annum (TPA) and this could add an additional 2 percent to the industry's growth rate. Our per capita consumption of paper is only 14 kg as against the global average of 57-60 kg, which shows that we still have a very long way to go. The industry's topline, for the first time, crossed the important milestone of 1 lakh crore and is pegged to grow at 10 percent in the next few years.

Now, I would like to talk about trade –and the need to transform itself in order to accelerate and participate in this very exciting growth story. The paper industry, in the last 12-18 months, has witnessed price increases that have never been seen before. The operating conditions in the trade have changed very much in the last couple of years. The rules of the game have changed and we are no longer at the traditional 3-5 years cycle. The cycles have become much shorter, and this could well be the new normal that we will have to adapt ourselves to. The traditional approach of rupees per tonne margins only leads to diminish-

ing returns. This must change now to at least 3-5 percent of Ex Mill Cost plus Cost of Credit. All of you are aware that our working capital requirements have almost doubled in the last 12-18 months. It is in our overall interests to have reasonable and adequate margins to meet the needs of growth and expansion. I would urge fellow paper traders to acquire knowledge, information, gather valuable customer insights, and explore newer business models so that we can become a valuable partner to both our customers as well as our principals. This would also help to transform the nature of the business into a vibrant and very exciting one so that our next generation can join more willingly and participate in this growth.

We appeal to the leaders of the paper manufacturers to form a joint consultative committee consisting of all stakeholders. The committee should focus on innovations in the application of paper, promoting the nature-friendliness of paper, and jointly working towards a healthy trade. We strongly believe that in this multi-polar and interdependent world, increased cooperation becomes vitally important. Today, the Federation of Paper Traders' Association of India is made up of 35 affiliate associations covering all the states and union territories. It has more than 6000 members. The gross turnover of the trade is INR 75 thousand crore and it contributes around INR 10 thousand crore in taxes and the collective investment of the trade body is close to INR 20 thousand crore.”

He concluded his speech by adding, “India's economy is the fifth largest in the world, and is poised to become the third-largest in the next decade. I am sure that the paper industry and the paper trade, with the support of the Indian government, will write this growth story and contribute to building the nation's economic, environmental, and social wealth. years, the situation is much better for the board industry. As for the paper industry, this is probably one of the best times ever. Thus, this is good news for the industry, as a whole since the sales volume is good and the demand has returned.

Nevertheless, there are certain challenges regarding the commercial aspects of it. Since dealers operate as an important cord between the paper manufacturers and the customers and there has been a consolidation of the industry, among the printer and the convertors that we are seeing across. Probably, more and more will happen soon in India as well. In my understanding, the industry has come to terms with a lot of uncertainties –both expected and unexpected and is able to deal with them quite effectively. In addition to other business partners, I must also laud and compliment the role played by the dealer community in these trying times and all of you have played an important role!”

Mr. Vadiraj Kulkarni, Divisional Chief Executive, ITC PSPD, who was also the guest of honour at the event, said, “At ITC, the paper business is a 45-year-old organisation. We are largely the manufacturer of virgin paperboards, and thus, our expertise lies mainly in paperboards than paper. In my understanding, from the onset of COVID-19, we have seen numerous changes. It wouldn't be wrong to say that the industry has survived and in fact, it is growing, which is good news. Previously, the demand for paper and paper packaging had gone down. We went through a lot of challenges. However, in the last one and a half

In terms of demand for fiber products and the investment of ITC, Mr. Kulkarni, stated, “I think it would be quite robust and great going forward, all thanks to the resilient Indian economy. My assessment of the immediate future is that the economy is going to grow in India. The growth in e-commerce is going to continue. There are going to be more investments in the consumer segments of paper and paperboard. Also, there have been many new investments and international companies are showing great interest but I think the Indian manufacturers will be able to compete well in terms of contributing to 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' and 'Make in India' policies. ITC, as an organisation, has been investing in new technologies and new capacities in line with its growth ambition. Our ongoing investments include a high-pressure recovery boiler, the first-ever in India and the pulp mill expansion at the Bhadrachalam plant is underway. We will continue to focus on virgin and

He further added, “While there are a lot of changes taking place in the business models around us and globally such as the expected consolidation by the printers and the converters. As there has been a surge in digital technology and evolution, the role of dealers has also constantly evolved. I have also seen that there has been a kind of generational shift which is happening. As the new generation is coming and taking over, they are coming up with new ideas, different backgrounds, and with a sense of aggressive pursuit of ideas. In my opinion, both the customers and the manufacturers would like the dealers to add more value and not just manage the transactions. Some of the areas that the dealer community can really work hard in is to skill their teams, product specifications for paperboards, sales efforts, IT management, last-mile connectivity, reaching to smaller towns, partnering with manufacturers for market development for new products, especially in the packaging boards, and the digital enablement of the supply chain processes. I know that some of the dealers are significantly investing in developing new solutions. Our relationship, through these interventions, meetings, workshops, and conferences, should only get stronger and stronger. And we can, in our own way, add to India's growing economy!”

“The paper industry is truly resilient and has great capabilities, which was especially seen during the time of COVID-19, but also even before the onset of the pandemic. I say time and again that why do we only talk about the COVID-related crisis when we'd already faced much more turbulent times before the pandemic happened. The paper industry had overcome such trying times successfully. COVID-19 has surely impacted for a certain duration of time. In fact, doing business always entails all kinds of challenges and turbulence on a constant basis. It is part and parcel of doing business! There will always be ups and downs in the business and we need to learn and master the art of managing and thriving in those ups and downs. As a matter of fact, it is mostly in certain times that we are even more successful in handling the downturns. This is what we should learn – the art of managing well in times of crisis. It is quite certain that India is poised to be an attractive market. But there will be all kinds of challenges such as growing competition, and other challenges. We will need to buckle up to handle those challenges. It is quite certain that uncertainties will always be there and it is we who should be certain to handle those uncertainties. There's a famous saying that goes 'Tough times never last, but tough people do'!

The dichotomy is that although we

know that the times have changed, we don't change accordingly. We complacently say that the times have evolved. What is needed is that we should introspect the extent to which we have embraced the changes and are ready to evolve further and whether or not we've been able to keep pace with the changing times. Is it necessary that the way of operating in the paper trading industry should continue to be the way it has been? It is expected of the paper manufacturers and the paper trading community to keep on evolving. But it should be duly noted that every entity and segment in the sector should make efforts in transforming themselves. Since the customers' attitudes, behaviours, and outlooks are changing, why should we and our processes remain the same? We need to change everything for the better! It is also important to give the younger generation the elbow room to operate and work in. The successful transitions in businesses will be when the younger people are allowed to work in their own ways.

The paper industry is truly sustainable. We should proactively talk and spread awareness among people about the pro-environment activities of the paper industry as it is one of the most sustainable and responsible industries. The reason we should strive to be as sustainable as possible is not because of the governmental norms but because of our efforts to protect the environment. The industry should even increase their plantations and make adequate efforts in this direction to be wood-positive. I am quite proud to say that we, at JK Paper, have made this our personal agenda and mission. We are committed to do a minimum plantation on 40 thousand acres every year, which we have been surpassing since the last seven years. For this year, we have set the target to do plantations of 50 thousand acres.

On this note, I would add that India is going to be a growing paper market.

“The advent of digitalisation means that the digital format and the paper will co-exist. Paper is always going to be needed even if we go digital as we have. And it is not just an industrial need but is a huge part of our daily lives.” ”

The advent of digitalisation means that the digital format and the paper will co-exist. Paper is always going to be needed even if we go digital as we have. It is not just an industrial need but is a huge part of our daily lives. The consumption of paper and paper products will also grow in the times to come. There will be even newer applications of papers. It also seems that the Writing & Printing paper segment is likely to grow unlike the western world where this segment is in a degrowth mode. There will be other segments in the industry which will achieve robust and sturdy growth.

Since the world is looking at India as their top consideration for sourcing, this will give us even more opportunities for growth in the times to come. We should strive to be competitive, competent, as well as qualityconscious. It will also provide additional growth opportunities as the future of the paper industry is quite promising.”

of the pulp sector, but not the paper sector. In these seven-eight months of my association with the paper industry, I've found the industry to be magnificent and the people who work in the industry including the paper dealers and traders to be equally magnificent. The paper industry certainly seems to be quite promising with huge growth potential.

We are concerned with how to drive growth transformations, strengthen the supply chain, and increase awareness among people that paper is sustainable and biodegradable. If we put in more effort, the paper industry will definitely grow further. I am sure that it is going to grow substantially in the years to come.

I would like to emphasise that we, at Century Pulp and Paper, have worked really hard toward sustainability. We've also increased our plantation drives, particularly in the last two-three years. We've started planting trees and distributing free saplings to the farmers. In this year itself, we have distributed nearly 2.5 million saplings for free. We are also in continuous talks with the forest department in this regard. Recently, I also met the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand regarding our mission of increasing the green cover. This is going to be greatly important in the coming times. From the environmental point of view, it is often said about the industry that we cut off trees and so on. However, it should also be noted that the Indian paper industry grows more trees than it consumes.”

Mr. Vijay Kaul, CEO, Century Pulp and Paper, presented the keynote address, “I was initially in the pulp and fiber business. Thus, I was quite aware

Minister for Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari, in his speech, said, “I am very much delighted that the Federation of the

Paper Traders' Association (FPTA) has organised the All India Paper Traders' conference and the 61st Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Nagpur. The FPTA, as the apex body for paper traders in the country, is making significant efforts to promote the usage of paper in the country. The guidance of the dignitaries from the field may throw light on the future path and course of action of the association. I extend my best wishes for the success of the conference and to Aseem Bordia who is going to be inducted as the national president of FPTA. As a member of parliament, I want to extend a welcome to all of you to Nagpur. The office bearers of the FPTA association keep in touch with me and discuss matters concerning the industry. Thus, I am well aware of what the challenges are. Our country is fifth on the list of the fastest-growing economies in the world. It is also true that a large share of paper which is manufactured gets imported. You must be well aware that the cutting down of bamboo trees was prohibited earlier. I, along with the Forest department, urged the Prime Minister in this regard. Now, the government is making large-scale bamboo plantation drives on wasteland areas. Notably, the large availability of bamboo means raw material security for the paper industry as well as the production of bio-ethanol. Moreover, it will also benefit the environment. It seems that the future of the paper industry is promising. Thus, it is quite certain that the future of both the paper manufacturing industry and the paper trading industry is quite bright. In this regard, I would like to extend my whole support and assistance as and when required.” The session ended with a vote of thanks to the Chair. n

Tmanagement of the pulp and paper industry is a big challenge but also presents huge opportunities to transform waste materials into value-added products. Indian paper industry is experiencing considerable changes, including technological advancements, environmental factors, and sustainability objectives.

CII Water Institute has been partnering with the pulp and paper industry over the years, to work together on improving water usage, setting new baselines and benchmarks that are both nationally as well as globally realisable. To reinvigorate the debate, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) organised the 7th National Conference on Pulp & Paper on 31

August 2022. Themed 'Being Future Ready in Pulp & Paper sector: Water & Wastewater Management', the Conference shared good practices for water use efficiency in business operations over the virtual platform contributing to overall environmental protection & sustainability with two plenary sessions. The conference was chaired by Mr. Sanjay Singh, Former Group Head - Paper & Packaging, ITC Ltd. – PSPD and co-chaired by Mr. SVR Krishnan, Executive Director (Operations) TNPL.

Mr. Sanjay Singh set the tone for the proceedings and said, “The ban on single-use plastics has suddenly opened the door of opportunities for all of us. Now, it is up to the industry, how to use that opportunity for the benefit of the country, the world, and the environment. The demand for paper products has substantially gone up in the past one year. Pulp & paper industry is one of the most sustainable industries. The only negative thing is the high energy and water consumption, but things have substantially changed. When I joined the industry 40 years ago, it 3used to be 200 -250 m of water per tonne of paper. Today, the industry is 3talking about 30 m per tonne for 3integrated paper mills and 8-10 m for non-integrated mills. The paper industry has done a lot in terms of conservation in the recycling of water and reducing the pollution level.”

He also shared the idea of using sewage water after treating it. “If you are stationed near a city, or town on the banks of any river, you can work with the local municipality, collect the sewage water, treat it well, and use that water in your own industry. With this, you would be reducing the water consumption drawn from the ground. Secondly, you will reduce the pollution load. And my gut feeling says that in that next 15-20 years, there'll be a huge value to the sewage water in city or town,” he suggested.

The water is going to be the crucial thing. On the other front, the paper industry is very capital intensive and you have to keep on investing throughout your life. If you don't invest, your efficiency will go down. And that's one of the reasons that today, the pulp & paper industry is very innovative. A lot more things can be introduced such as Industry 4.0, which is catching on and I've had the experience of using Industry 4.0; it is very useful. I'm sure many other paper mills are doing it and they'll continue to do it. I am very confident that in the coming years, the pulp & paper industry will become the benchmark for use of water, pollution load, and innovative ideas,” said Mr. Singh.

Mr. SVR Krishnan, Executive Director (Operations) TNPL added, “Just like the water flows from the top, these types of initiatives, action plans, and awareness on water conservation should also be driven from the top. The paper industry in India is of huge value to the Indian economy, with respect to the job generation for the farmers, and for the skilled and unskilled workforce in the country in various parts of the states and townships, and also bringing the balancing of trade and with the good amount exports happening now, bringing foreign revenue. Right from the people who are helping the farmers to fell the trees until the time it reaches the consumers; the industry connects everybody in the supply chain.”

Talking about water conservation being the need of the hour, he added, “Water consumption is no more a choice. It is a dictum that you need to do for the sustainability of your own mill. It is the need of our own industry. A lot of trials are happening after the single-use plastic ban which is definitely a great opportunity but the viability depends on how responsibly we are going to carry it forward by looking at water consumption, steam consumption, and energy

utilisation. Further, he suggested that the moment we consider waste as a by-product, we attach a value to it. “We at TNPL are conscious of the Triple P concept – people, planet and profit. We believe that if we take care of people, they will take care of the planet and both of these will take care of our profit”, he said.

Dr. A.K. Vidyarthi, Scientist, (Water Quality Management), CPCB through his presentation appreciated the industry for being environmentally conscious and taking corrective measures with regard to freshwater consumption, sp. effluent discharge, BOD, COD, and TSS. Talking about BOD, he highlighted, “Around 49.06 percent of the mills are operating in less than 20mg/l at their outlet and 45.51 percent are operating between 20 mg/l to 30 mg/l. The BOD is more than 30 mg/l for only 9.43 percent of the mills.”

Mr. D.P. Mathuria Executive Director (Technical), National Mission for Clean Ganga said “A lot has been done by the pulp & paper industry as far as Ganga river basin is concerned both in terms of compliance of these industries, environmental standards as of the date as well as water consumption. However, the industry is said to have reduced specific water consumption by 30 percent but we found that groundwater extraction remained the same. We need to see what has been the impact of this on the recipient environment. We have been stressing CPCB to review these kinds of arrangements. Apparently, freshwater consumption should have come down in the industries that have been able to achieve zero effluent discharge. Reuse channels should be monitored. We need to understand the challenges of the industry in order to find the best possible solutions.”

Mr. M.K. Gupta, Director, Central Pulp & Paper Research Institute (CPPRI) pointed out that the paper industry has done well even during

WATERSUSTAINABILITY •••••••••••••••••

the pandemic and that is a big achievement. “Our production was steep for two years and but it never went down”, he said. He mentions the use of mixed raw materials, low level of technology, lack of optimised process conditions, use of low capacity multiple paper machines, variations in varieties of end products (restricts reuse/recycle), low cost of water and mental block as some of the reasons of high water consumption in the paper industry. He added that the installation of flow meters on borewells and distribution pipes has helped in the quantification of freshwater consumption, identification of major water-consuming areas, and development of appropriate strategies for reducing freshwater consumption. He further said that the installation of the fiber recovery unit has reduced inlet pollution load, increased reuse/recycling of backwater and treated effluent and improved ETP performance. Other strategies adopted by the paper mills include reduction of the nozzle size, high consistency pulper, equalisation tank, and diffused aeration. Biomethanation of backwater in ZLD paper mills along with aerobic treatment and CIO are some of the2 recent trends.

Mr. Avinash Mishra, Adviser (Land and Water Resources), Niti Aayog, said, “India is one of the growing pulp & paper markets with around 4 percent of the share of global production and around 6 percent market growth per annum. We produce several types and grades of paper through a mix of raw materials, most of which are based on recycled, followed by wood and agroresidue. The sector has demonstrated good examples of improvement in operational water use, efficiency, reuse, recycling and recovery of wastewater. There's a need for a scale-up of good practices. Water scarcity and uncertainty in freshwater supplies from groundwa-

ter and surface water system are growing. In times to come, the sector should look at the integration of operational efficiency and operational sustainability. The paper industry today holds immense potential for growth in India. The per capita consumption of paper in India is one of the lowest in the world. With the ban on single-use plastic, quality packaging and FMCG product, pharmaceuticals, textile and organised retail would see great demand. However, the sector has one of the highest water footprints - it takes an average of seven litres of water to produce one A4-size paper.

The existing technology in India 3consumes water between 80-150 m per tonne of paper production while 3the global average is 29 m per tonne. I believe that it has further been revised a little lower than that, which is close 3to 12-15 m per tonne. The availability of fresh water in India remains a challenge owing to its uniqueness. However, this must not stop industries from adopting sustainable and efficient use of this crucial resource in the process chain. We are always ignoring one assured resource which is the wastewater that is being produced and still being released to the water bodies and polluting them. This can be put into circulatory use and there should be multiple uses of the wastewater to reduce the net consumption of water. I think that it is high time for us to move in that direction. The first step is identifying the consumption and its sources. Water use audits are essential for understanding how water is used at your facility to identify the opportunity for reducing consumption. Having the assessment, knowing the machinery efficiency technology at each stage of the process for costeffective wastewater treatment can be adopted for recycling and reuse such as filtration and biological treatment phase. Planning and approach can lead to a reduction in water consump-

tion, energy saving and effluent generation.”

Mr. Kapil Narula, Executive Director, CII-Triveni Water Institute, concluded the session by mentioning the key takeaways, “We see a sea change in the demand for people. That's a great thing that's happening, but at the same time, we see a tradeoff between the capacity enhancement, the need for capacity enhancement, and the need for a more stringent way of looking at resource management. A very important message is to look at wastewater, not as a wastewater stream, but as a byproduct stream. This immediately changes the mindset. Another important message that has come from the industry is source diversification. We really need to look at freshwater source diversification. There is a need to move away from fresh water, be it surface or groundwater. To do this, there is a need for technology upgradation. The cost comes out as a big factor but we need to make an intelligent choice. The industry needs to prevent malpractices and come out as a strong example of showing a leadership role in water and wastewater management,” he said.

The inaugural session was followed by the first session on 'Improving Operational Efficiency in Pulp & Paper sector- Role of Technology and Source diversification'. Moderated by Mr. Bipin Thapliyal, Secretary General, Indian Agro & Recycled Paper Mills Association, it saw the discussion on new and advanced technologies being developed, accepted and implemented in the pulp & paper sector in order to improve the operational efficiencies of the system. The second plenary session was 'Leading by Example Good Practices in Pulp and Paper: Being Future Ready for – Managing Water and Wastewater'. The panelists in the discussion were Mr. B Makarand, Head – Manufacturing & Projects, ITC Paper Boards & Specialty Papers Division; Mr. Ashok Kumar Singh, Vice President (Operations) & Mill Manager, Andhra Paper Ltd.; Dr. R.K. Jain Technical Expert, United Nations Industrial Development Organization; Mr. Satyajit Mohanty, General Manager (EHS), JK Paper Ltd.; and Mr. Parvinder Singh Taunque, Vice President- Engineering, Kuantum Papers Ltd.

Mr. B. Makarand talked about ITC's initiatives within the fence and beyond the fence. “There is water scarcity. If you see, in India itself, there are 600 million people who are facing extreme scarcity of water. Around 75 percent of the households do not have drinking water on their premises. About 70 percent of water sources are contaminated. India is currently ranked 120 among 122 countries on the water quality index. The industry is the third major consumer of water. First water goes to agriculture. Second, it goes for the drinking purpose. Third, it goes for industrial purposes. And if you see the priority for the government to distribute the water, the industry will be at the last. Hence, the industry has to work not only to reduce their water but to see that enough water is available for drinking and irrigation purposes. If these two sectors are not under stress, water will be available for the industries also,” said Mr. Makarand.

“To mitigate that risk, we have put up our sustainability targets. The first target is that by 2030, our specific water consumption will come down by 42 percent. The second target is that we will create a rainwater harvesting potential of 60 million kiloliters, which will be five times our net water consumption. We have also taken a target that we'll get the Alliance for Water stewardship certificate for the unit by 2025. To achieve these targets will benchmark over performance with the global mills that emerged as leaders in the pulp and paper sector. To reduce the consumption by 5 percent, we increase the recycling of the treated effluent within the plant and maximize reuse in the process. The second thing, enhance the ownership of the employees. And the last is to adopt innovative technologies,” he concluded.

Mr. Ashok Kumar Singh highlighted that the approach of Andhra Paper is

mainly on following three basic fundamentals – Focussing on cleaner production technologies, water reduction, reuse, recycling, and recovery, and wastewater reduction, reuse, recycling and recovery. To see that we always keep ourselves focused, we have set sustainability goals for 2030.

Talking about CLO as an effective2 odour and slime control biocide, Dr. R.K. Jain said that CLO can be2 applied at a site immediately before the problem area, unlike many conventional biocides, which are generally slow acting. Mr. Satyajit Mohanty discussed various projects undertaken by JK Paper Ltd. such as drained sealing water of Voith vacuum pump reused in the shower, overflow water of seal water pit controlled by providing VFD to seal water pit pump, higher capacity pump installed to restrict overflow of CLO plant cooling2 water pit, etc.

Parvinder Singh Taunque talked about the technologies adopted by Kuantum Papers Ltd. Some of those are the installation of new state-ofthe-art DAF technology viz. Megacell high-performance filter which is used for wet washing filtrate to achieve outlet TSS levels < 100ppm1000 m3/day, recycling back the hot water from heat exchangers through the cooling tower back into the process for paper machine wire & press 3section LP showers 100 m/day, foul condensate used as hot water in the unbleached section for pulp washing 3at 250 m/day, use of sealing water return in wet washing section @30 3 m/day.

With the two interesting sessions, the Conference aimed to share good practices for water use efficiency in business operations, and thereby contribute to overall environmental protection and sustainability. n

BracellContinuestobeat theForewithInnovations inPulpMaking

racell, recognized as one of the

Bglobal leaders in the production of dissolving pulp and specialty cellulose, has deployed innovative technologies. In 2019, the company invested in building the largest and greenest pulp mill in the world, located in Lençóis Paulista, São Paulo, Brazil. This came to be known as Project Star, becoming a landmark investment in Bracell's history and the largest-ever private investment in the State of São Paulo in the last 20 years.

In an exclusive conversation with Paper Mart, Mr. Per Lindblom, Executive Vice President, Bracell, talks about the strong environmental commitment of the pulp mill, details about Project Star, and the importance of being the “new generation pulp mill”. Further, he also presents insights on the growing sustainability in the pulp industry, the current market presence of Bracell, and the future roadmap.

Paper Mart: Tell us about the Bracell overview and key company milestones.

Per Lindblom: Bracell is a company that is constantly growing and investing in large projects, following its main commitment to sustainability. With more than 4,700 employees in Brazil, we are very proud of our development over the last few years. In 2019, we made a huge investment to build the largest and greenest pulp mill in the world,

Mr. Per Lindblom, Executive Vice President, Bracell

located in Lençóis Paulista, São Paulo. Known as Project Star, this was a milestone in Bracell's history and will continue to be remembered as the largest private investment in the State of São Paulo in the last 20 years.

The new plant, which is part of an ambitious expansion project of the company in São Paulo, has the capacity to produce 1.5 million tons of dissolving pulp and up to 3 million tons of kraft pulp per year. With the start of operations at the new plant in September 2021, Bracell became the largest producer of dissolving pulp in the world.

Nowadays, Bracell has a production capacity of 80 million seedlings per year. In 2021, the company produced 59.8 million seedlings, being 26.8 million in Bahia and 33 million in São Paulo. In addition, the Forest Protection Complex in Alagoinhas (BA), a place with three laboratories dedicated to the identification, research and development of pest control solutions, was also inaugurated. The company's social investments are made by Bracell Social. We invested more than R$4 million in social projects that reached more than 100 thousand people.

There was also the construction of the Intermodal Terminal in Pederneiras (SP) in partnership with MRS

Logística to transport the pulp to the Port of Santos. The pulp is transported by truck to the terminal and from there is transported by train to Santos Port. Each composition consists of up to 3 locomotives and 67 wagons and transports a volume equivalent to what can be transported by 120 trucks. We have 463 wagons of our own to support the transportation and we already have a study for the implementation of electric trucks to reduce carbon emissions.

This year, we launched another great initiative. The “One-For-One Commitment”, unprecedented in the Brazilian pulp sector, will contribute to the conservation of native vegetation areas equal in size to the plantation areas. For every one hectare of eucalyptus planted, Bracell is committed to conserving one hectare of the native area. The goal will be reached by the end of 2025. It is an important step for Bracell in its sustainability strategy, which is fully aligned with the company's values.

Currently, the ratio between the company's cultivated areas and conservation areas is 0.56. This initiative is important because it expands the company's area of activity in the conservation of biodiversity beyond our areas of operation. We have adopted this commitment on a

permanent basis. So, if the company increases the areas of eucalyptus plantations after 2025, proportionally, the total number of conserved areas will also be increased, to maintain the “One-For-One Commitment”. In addition to conserving existing native areas in Bracell's production areas, the commitment will support conservation in public areas and the recovery of degraded areas through partnerships with governments and other institutions. It will also help to prevent and fight forest fires, deforestation and theft of native wood, illegal hunting, and capture of wild animals.

PM: How do you think this will play a role in strengthening Bracell's position as one of the largest and most sustainable pulp mills in the world?

PL: As mentioned earlier, the completion of Project Star is a milestone in the company's history. We are very proud to be pioneers in the construction of a new generation pulp mill, which provides flexible and biodegradable products using the most advanced technology.

Bracell is one of the leaders in the production of dissolving pulp, including specialty pulp and our mill is at the forefront of innovation in the sector. In other words, this only

reinforces our competitiveness and our capacity to bring products of the highest quality to the market.

PM: Tell us more about Project Star technologies and infrastructure. Also, clarify the manufacturing capabilities you intend to achieve with the project.

PL: In addition to being the largest and greenest pulp mill in the world, using cutting-edge technologies that minimize the environmental impacts of the operation, the new plant has the capacity to produce 1.5 million tons of dissolving pulp and up to 3 million tons of kraft pulp per year. We have the largest recovery boiler in the world and the first biomass gasifier in operation in the pulp & paper sector in South America. Over the next two years, production planning will be carried out in stages, focusing on the operational stability of the two lines. After this period, the lines will be used to produce either dissolving or Kraft pulp, according to the demands of the company and the market.

The gasification plant uses 100 percent renewable biomass as a raw material to produce biogas. Trees are grown in areas that were previously pasture or degraded, which helps to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, contributing to climate mitigation.

We are self-sufficient in energy for the plant's operations and the surplus energy generated is distributed to the national grid. As the pulp production process generates by-products that can be reused, the company took a strategic decision to invest in state-of-

the-art equipment and high technology in its process cycles. We have built a new 440 KV substation connected to the transmission network with GIS (Inflated Gas) technology. The installed capacity is 409 MW, powered by three turbogenerators that are sufficient to meet the factory's demand while also allowing us to export to the SIN (National Interconnected System) network around 150-180 MW of surplus energy from renewable sources, without Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. This surplus energy is capable of serving 750,000 homes or around three million people.

PM: As a “Next Generation Pulp Mill”, what will be your main approach to bring more value creation and innovations to the pulp sector?

PL: The goal is for our entire value chain to be sustainable. The pulp we produce is a raw material from a high quality renewable source, used in the production of biodegradable products, which are present in the daily lives of thousands of people.

The company is always evaluating the best alternatives for investment and growth in the markets in which it operates, especially in Latin America. As an example, in addition to the expansion of the São Paulo unit, Bracell evaluated some opportunities in the downstream pulp segment (consumer goods) that could add value to its pulp and decided to invest in a tissue factory in its São Paulo unit.

This project is expected to generate

more than 2,000 jobs during its construction phase and approximately 300 permanent jobs after its completion. We had issued a Notice-ToProceed for 4 Andritz tissue machines of 240,000 tons per year capacity. The 4 machines are expected to start up from 2Q 2024.

PM: What is Bracell's current market presence worldwide? What is your view on the Indian pulp and paper industry – and your plans to expand in the country?

PL: As part of the RGE group, which manages a group of companies with global natural resource-based manufacturing operations in addition to its operations in Brazil, Bracell has an administrative office in Singapore and sales offices in Asia, Europe and the United States.

A significant part of the dissolving pulp production at the new Lençóis Paulista plant is consumed internally to meet the group's growth plans. In relation to Kraft pulp, part of the production is destined for the expansion of RGE's paper and board factory in China. The surplus is sold to international customers, especially in Europe and the United States.

Without a doubt, the Indian market is one of the most important markets in the world. There are companies, including the RGE group, of which we are a part, that has been operating in the country for almost 20 years. Local mills supply quality products with high production demand.

PM: Could you explain the strategies adopted to achieve superior quality, improved efficiency, save energy, and ensure efficient use of resources in overall production?

PL: The design of our new plant, in Lençóis Paulista, includes technological innovations in the production process, while also following key sustainability criteria. The aim is to guarantee the efficient use of resources in the production process,

with an emphasis on the reduction of water use and the reuse of byproducts, such as eucalyptus biomass that generates clean energy in the gasifier.

We have the first plant in the industry that can be described as “fossil-fuel free”. In other words, the operations of the plant do not use fossil fuels, which is positive for the climate, with only biogenic CO2 emissions. Our biomass gasifier is responsible for generating fuel for lime kilns from wood waste from the woodyard.

In addition, Bracell is self-sufficient in the generation of energy to produce pulp and still generates a surplus of 150-180 MW that is made available on the national grid, enough to serve about 3 million people, equivalent to the city of Brasília, the capital of Brazil. Generation at the new plant is 409 MW, with a surplus of 150 to 180 MW that is made available on the national grid.

PM: How would you describe the impact of growing awareness of sustainability on the pulp industry?

PL: Bracell was born sustainable. It is part of our brand and our daily lives.

Our operations are guided by our commitment that everything we do must be good for the country, the climate, the communities, and the customers because only then it will also be good for Bracell. This is part of our philosophy and our commitment to sustainable development in all our operations, processes, and activities. To deliver on this commitment, we have invested time and resources in continuous improvement, seeking to adopt the best socio-environmental and ethical practices.

Companies across all industries are becoming more engaged with sustainability and this is a trend we have been seeing for some time now. The companies look for sustainable initiatives that generate profits but also prioritize preservation, environmental restoration, and social prosperity. The planted tree sector in Brazil protects more natural areas than anywhere else in the world.

And we are really proud of this great initiative we launched this year. The “One-For-One Commitment”, unprecedented in the Brazilian pulp sector, will contribute to the conservation of native vegetation areas equal in size to the plantation areas. For

every one hectare of eucalyptus planted, Bracell is committed to conserving one hectare of the native area. The goal will be reached by the end of 2025. It is an important step for Bracell in its sustainability strategy, which is fully aligned with the company's values.

It will also help to prevent and fight forest fires, deforestation and theft of native wood, illegal hunting, and capture of wild animals.

Today, sustainability is an absolute priority in the strategic planning of companies in the planted tree sector, like ourselves, with a focus on ensuring positive economic, environmental and social impacts. n

PM: Kindly talk about the product range offered by the company along with their key features as well as applications.

SK: KRecycling has a basket of products to offer from high strength smell-free carry bag papers, testliners, fluting medium, newsprint, woodfree duplex boards, and other packaging grades, to name a few. We can offer FSC-certified as well as foodgrade products. As we all know enough about the need to phase out single-use plastics in view of the government's ban on the same, the carry bag paper is need of the hour which we are supplying majorly in the Indian market as well as exporting the same overseas.

PM: Elaborate on the current market presence of the company –both domestically & internationally and the expansion plans.

SK: Currently, KRecycling is based out of Gurugram (Haryana) and is catering to pan-India as well as overseas markets, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, China, Africa, Jordan, Egypt, and so on. We intend to expand our wings further by expanding to newer markets wherever we find the demand and opportunity for paper and paperbased products.

PM: Give us an overview of the scenario in the Indian recycled fiber industry with respect to the demand, challenges & opportunities. How do you foresee the future?

SK: We see a bright future for the Indian paper industry, especially in the high-strength kraft paper segment as the usage of plastic will diminish with the government becoming more stringent against the use of single-use plastic, expansion of e-commerce companies for door delivery of the products, and switch from traditional or conventional packaging to new innovative and high-strength packaging products.

In the printing paper segment, the demand has already started to flourish with the pandemic slowly moving towards an end and is becoming ineffective.

PM: Compared with paper made from virgin materials, the carbon footprint of recycled paper is smaller; kindly elaborate on that.

SK: Using recycled paper saves trees, energy, water, as well as landfill space. It produces lesser pollution than virgin paper production. It also offers environmental savings many times over since fibers can be recycled repeatedly. Moreover, with the lesser availability of virgin fibers, more and more mills are turning towards recycled fibers not only in India as well as in other overseas markets. Recycling our own waste will allow us to leave and conserve natural resources for the next generations.

PM: The present recovery of wastepaper in India is relatively low as compared to other developed nations. What could be some pertinent strategies to increase the same so as to meet the raw material demand of the paper mills in the country?

SK: It is true that the present

recovery ratio in India is low around 25 percent as compared to 70+ percent in Europe and 68 percent in the USA. However, it will definitely increase in the future as people are becoming more and more aware of the benefits of recycling and the use of waste to make into new finished products. This outlook will definitely be passed on as a legacy to the next generations and we hope to come closer to the rate of recycling in Europe or the USA in the coming years. The government of India should also take the initiative to promote the recycling of paper products which will definitely generate new employment also and create a lot of value from waste materials.

PM: Has there been any recent development at KRecycling that you would like to talk about? What are your plans and growth strategies for the coming future?

SK: KRecycling is committed to developing new value-added and innovative paper products as per the demands of its customers. In the past two years, we have been able to develop many such products and have added the same to our basket which we offer to our customers and are consistently supplying the same. We are well-known for our professional services and quality products.

PM: Any concluding thoughts to add to our interaction?

SK: Overall, we see a bright future for the Indian market as it is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. The demand for various paper grades is projected to increase and KRecycling will definitely look forward to getting its share of the pie. n

SMART Clean™

SMART Clean™ is the next-generation boiler cleaning optimisation system that is designed to realise the plant's performance and operational objectives regardless of the changes in factors influencing the slagging and fouling conditions in the boiler. The system accomplishes the plant targets by using real-time intelligent feedback. Following are the guiding principles of the SMART Clean™ system:

Determinewhenandwheretoclean;

Dynamic Flow Control of Sootblowing System;

EvaluateCleaningEffectiveness;and

Measure TDM CF Flue Gas DP.

Our SMART Clean™ system is a superior way to intelligently manage your sootblower operations and increase the heat transfer in your heat exchangers. Traditional sootblowing systems are either based on fixed cycles, or at the operator's discretion to start the cleaning process. This style of cleaning can result in lower heat transfers, adversely affecting the thermal efficiency and plant heat rate of your boiler.

The boiler cleaner optimisation system transforms your sootblowing system into an intelligent closed-loop control system that uses real-time boiler data to initiate cleaning events at the appropriate time and intensity. Equipped with the SMART Control platform, the SMART Gauge & Thermodynamic Modeling (TDM) feedback, the SMART Clean™ system is the ultimate weapon against carryover and plugging problems.

investment is made by the customer. We provide the CAPEX, performance, and uptime and the client pays out of the savings.

Paper Mart: Could you present a brief overview of Yantra Harvest Energy Pvt. Ltd. along with its services specifically for the paper industry?

Ajit Shah: Yantra Harvest Energy Pvt. Ltd. is an Energy Service Company (ESCO). From guaranteed savings to payback, every responsibility belongs to an ESCO, and that is what we do. Paper mill holds huge opportunity for energy efficiency as they use extensive power and have their own captive power plant. When a business uses a captive power plant, there is a huge energy-saving opportunity available in the power plant itself (in the different fans and pumps). We provide that to the paper mills under the ESCO model, in which no

In a paper mill, there is a good amount of steam used for different process requirements, especially in the drying unit. They use PRV and energy is wasted. We can help the industry to save that by using Energy Conservation Turbines (ECT) and the payback of this technology can be as less as one year. In this, the energy conservation turbine connected parallel to the PRDS/PRV uses this enthalpy to produce incidental power without impacting the steam parameters that are required for the process. Our advanced technology is designed to optimize the energy used and deliver maximum output at minimum fuel cost.

Hence, we can help the paper industry to reduce CO emissions, save energy2 as well as generate energy from waste.

PM: How long you've been there in this industry?

AS: Yantra Harvest is in the industry for the last 17 years and we have done 477 MVD installations. In these years, we have been able to save 60 MW of power per hour which is equivalent to the reduction of 432000 tons of CO2 per year and the planting of more than 20 million trees per year. Our mission is “let us create a Carbon Neutral planet”.

t has been about thirty years since

Ithe inception of Pap-Tech Engineers & Associates. Based out of Rajasthan, the Company is a notable specialist in providing costeffective and efficient equipment and its parts to the pulp and paper industry. In a conversation with Paper Mart magazine, Mr. V.K. Agarwal, CEO, Pap-Tech Engineers & Associates, presents an outline of the company's journey, product portfolio, the importance of upgrading technology, and the way forward for the company.

Paper Mart: To start with, please take us through a brief history of Pap-Tech Engineers & Associates and some significant milestones.

V.K. Agarwal: Pap-Tech Engineers & Associates was started in 1993 as a firm with humble beginnings yet with high-quality paper testing equipment. The company has achieved many milestones in its journey of nearly three decades. We now have a team of skilled engineers with an average experience of 35 years or so in the field of mechanical, electrical, electronics, or related relevant backgrounds. Additionally, there is a team of proficient designers and engineers in the 'After-Sales Service' support team.

In 1997, the Company forayed into paper machine manufacturing. Later on, we also began importing paper machines and spare parts – both new and second-hand from different countries with the objective of providing better quality control, effective production, and efficient

after-sales services & support to our customers. Pap-Tech Engineers is engaged in the manufacturing and distribution of physical testing equipment, bursting strength tester, and pulp testing equipment, amongst others. We export our products to the USA, the UAE, Brazil, Dubai, the Philippines, Vietnam, Bangkok, Egypt, and Bangladesh.

PM: Describe your product portfolio for the pulp and paper industry.

VKA: Pap-Tech Engineers has a wide range of products and solutions to offer to the paper industry. We have a complete range of physical testing equipment, paper testing equipment, paper mill machinery, pulp testing equipment, environmental testing equipment, and packaging testing equipment. Furthermore, we also provide bursting strength tester, centri cleaner system, pulp mill machinery, and auto guide.

Additionally, we have a complete range of paper machines and sections, including, pope reel, high-speed rewinders, pressurised air cushion headbox, hydraulic headbox, combination roll suction, roll top former dandy roll, pressure former jumbo press, size press, film press, shoe press, drying cylinders, yankee cylinders, gloss calenders, blade coaters, multizone nippco, soft nip & hard nip calenders, kuster type hardnip & soft nip calenders, and simple solid & steam calenders. We offer converting units like high-speed double knife cutters and high-speed rewinders.

“When paper mills put their efforts and make investments in upgradations and latest technologies… it paves the way to achieve more profitability.”

Furthermore, we also provide equipment for Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), consistency control basis weight valve control, headbox control, and auto guide. There are also pulp mill and stock preparation equipment like brown stock washers, high-speed washers, disc thickeners, poly disc filters, and various models of highefficiency centricleaners, drum pulper, d pulper, fractionators, pressure screens, and high-efficiency baskets slotted and holed as per the customised specifications. We also provide used paper machines, used pulp mills, used pressure screens, and other equipment from A to Z, with a capacity ranging from 50 TPD to 800 TPD. We also provide consultancy services to paper mills for upgrades in quality and production.

PM: What do you think are the challenges in the paper manufacturing industry which affect the profitability? What is your outlook on the importance of upgrading the technology?

VKA: The Indian paper mills are indeed on a swift growth path. The demand for paper and paper-based

products has been significantly growing. In my understanding, it is almost imperative for paper manufacturers to regard quality as the top consideration. The market dynamics are not a major challenge.

One of the major challenges faced by the manufacturers is the nonavailability of quality waste papers which is a major raw material for recycled paper-based mills. The quality of inputs, poor selection of appropriate machinery, and unskilled workmanship have an indelible impact on the runnability of machines. I believe that the profitability of the papermakers can be drastically enhanced with upgradations. Every mill should invest about 50 percent of the net profit in quality enhancements and the adoption of modern technologies.

PM: In what ways do efforts and investments in modern technologies play a role in enhancing the productivity and efficiency of paper mills?

VKA: It is quite true that when paper mills put their efforts and

make investments in upgradations and the latest technologies such as various parts and equipment of their paper machine section, then they will be able to sell their paper and paper products at higher prices. Thereby, it paves the way to achieve more profitability. Concerning achieving optimum export quality, upgrading the technology again plays a key role.

PM: What do you think are the factors behind the growth of the company?

VKA: Our recent business growth has been tremendous and is increasing consistently because of our policy of providing high quality at low prices. We believe in following a transparent and honest approach in the business which is why we have seen a distinct growth year by year.

Moreover, we are constantly introducing upgrades in the machines almost on a yearly basis. Nowadays, we are manufacturing instruments with Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) printers which are micro-controlbased. n

ConsumerTissue:RebootTime foraNewBusinessModel

he pandemic of 2020 has

Tpermanently altered the pecking order in tissue segments in India. Till 2019, HORECA & institutional segments (away from home or AFH) accounted for over two-thirds of the total tissue volume in India. During the last two years, while the former two underwent severe demand and supply shocks, the consumer tissue grew steadily barring short periods of supply hiccups.

During the last year, the AFH demand has largely recovered but it has sustained some permanent damage to its consumption. Besides, the wider adoption of more efficient dispensing systems as well as acceptance of partial WFH culture has ensured that the institutional segment in particular is an increasingly less important driver of the Indian tissue market.

On the other hand, consumer tissue has become more attractive over the years. It has delivered higher growth and better price realisation for several years but henceforth it also is the lead segment in volume terms as well. However, what will no longer work for the consumer tissue segment is the way it is sold and marketed. The entire sales strategy of the industry

has been based on the premise “Jo dikhta hai, wo bikta hai” (what is visible, gets sold). This meant that the complete focus and priority of the consumer tissue manufacturers was to get the product on the retail store shelves. No effort has been made to directly reach or communicate with the final consumer and generate consumer pull. This has handed a disproportionate share of negotiation leverage to the retailer, be it general trade or modern trade.

Over the years, as more and more players entered this market, chasing the same set of retailers, getting the product accepted by the retailer has become increasingly difficult and expensive. This prevailing “go-tomarket” strategy is no longer a feasible option for building a healthy business.

It is an established reality in the retail industry that priority for shelf space is given to products and brands that command consumer preference. For the remaining shelf space, the sellers have to jostle and outdo their competitors in a quick race to the financial bottom. Since, existing retail margins are already at unsustainable levels, going forward, the tissue

manufacturer has no option but to take the consumer demand pull route to shelf space.

This takes us to areas like branding, USP, product positioning, SKU and price point, product presentation and packaging, consumer communication i.e., advertising, sales channel mix, etc. Here is the marketing mix prescription for a successful strategy for future tissue businesses based on my own experience in this domain:

Branding

A catchy and judiciously chosen brand name and design that is easy to pronounce and remember is the first step. The brand promise or its USP should be arrived at after due market diligence and consumer relevance. It is extremely important that the product experience must come good on the USP to avoid dissonance and adverse consequences. Inputs from professional agencies in this area are a good investment as it fetches handsome returns from the market later on.

SKUSelectionandPricePoint

Unlike in B2B business, the selection of the right SKU and its associated price point (MRP) is an important

tactical choice that flows out of the brand strategy. An insightful selection of SKUs provides the consumer with affordable prices compatible with their consumption and can make it easier for them to pick the product. Also, this selection has a significant bearing on the brand's competitive stance as well as manoeuvring space for promotional activity.

Product Presentation & Packaging

Needless to say, product aesthetics go a long way in reinforcing or diluting the brand promise. Packaging design, quality and format used is easily the single most important factor in this regard. Besides, the decision regarding packaging also has a direct bearing on manufacturing operations as a tradeoff between CapEx and OpEx.

Consumer Communication or Advertising

The tissue business in India is still not large enough to sustain the big expenses associated with traditional media. So, it is highly advisable to opt for various digital platforms to communicate with the target consumer. Digital media can be extremely low cost and highly affordable even

for small businesses. Apart from being budget-friendly, it is highly interactive and engaging, measurable with a very low turnaround time and can be very precise with target audience selection.

Sales Channel Mix

There are multiple options to choose from as far as consumer end availability is concerned; general trade (GT), modern trade (MT), e-commerce platforms, and dedicated online sales. Each of these options has implications on the sales volume, price realisation, brand promotion and intermediary channel partner needs. The final channel mixwill depend upon resource availability and management priorities.

A comprehensive branding strategy does not confine itself to the sales and marketing domain only but influences aspects of manufacturing and the supply chain as well. A discussion on the same is not being included in this article for brevity. The traditional retailer-centric approach to consumer tissue marketing is already past its “use by” date. It neither creates value for the business nor is it scalable. On the other hand, consumer pull-based branded business requires better preparation but is a lot more rewarding in the medium and long term. n
