YEAR END REVIEW
2021 – The Year of Resilience and Resolution Another year is coming to end, and that makes it a perfect time for the companies to take note of the things that worked and things that didn’t from the previous year. It’s important for leaders to constantly evaluate the effectiveness of strategies, product launches, expansion projects, marketing campaigns, and more, and a yearend review is a perfect approach for this. We all hoped that by this time, the pandemic would be over. While that is not the case, the industry

is showing signs of recovery with the pick-up in demand. In view of concrete plans set out in the 2021 Budget, India is investing in world-class infrastructure projects; and this paves way for the wire and cable industry. “With the country’s increased focus on various sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare and affordable housing, the demand for wires and cables has increased significantly. working from home and schools holding online classes, the internet is now regarded as a critical tool. The rollout of 5G, 6G technology seems to be a significant growth driver for the Optical Fibre Cable market.
Talking about the government’s investment in the infrastructure sector as a key trend driving the growth, Mr. Vijay Kumar Bajaj, Chief Operating Officer, Apar Industries Ltd. said, “The increased investment in infrastructure, railways (including metro railway), defence, renewables, power distribution are the key drivers of business growth in the domestic market and we are well poised to take advantage of the situation.”
Meanwhile, the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ policy is playing the role of a catalyst by generating more demand due to restricted imports. While discussing the increased demand for solar cable, Mr. Arvind Agrawal, Vice President, Havells India Ltd. mentioned, “Our solar cable category has witnessed encouraging demand from consumers, especially in the commercial segment. It offers prominent features such as environmental sustainability and increases energy efficiency. The transmission mode of solar energy power generation is cheap, clean and reliable. This increases the bankability of solar projects and has therefore emerged as an important component for such initiatives.”
“The 5G spectrum auction which is scheduled during mid of 2022, is expected to initiate the new standalone network creation which should augur well for the industry in terms of increase in demand for optical fibre cables (OFC),” said Mr. R. Sridharan, Chief Executive Officer, Birla Cable Ltd.
The wire and cable market is expected to be driven by various other factors such as rural electrification, and the upgradation of power transmission & distribution systems. Ramping up its fight against climate change and global warming, India has set an ambitious target of installing 175 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2022, including 100 GW from solar, 60 GW from wind, 10 GW from bio-power, and 5 GW from small hydro-power which has increased the requirement of specialised cables. Gupta Power Infrastructure: Electrical Industry Playing a Justified Role in Developing Smart Cities Mr. Abhishek Gupta, Joint Managing Director, Gupta Power Infrastructure Ltd.
2021: The year that was In this time of crisis where thousands of people are witnessing their near and dear ones dying and getting affected by the second wave of the pandemic, it is my duty to ensure that everyone associated with Gupta Power including our channel partners, employees and our dear customers are safe and sound. It’s a test of humanity and my moral obligation dictates me to check on my immediate family and my employees who are my second family and ensure they are safe. As the COVID-19 pandemic second wave rolled well into FY2020-21, the government has been focusing on containing the infection and ramping up healthcare infrastructure. The nationwide lockdown saved lives but caused massive income loss and production loss, and an overall weak financial performance. COVID-19 coupled with economic uncertainty in several states led to disruptions in the production and supply in the wire and cable industry. The key is diversification and a backward integration strategy during this time. We are trying to diversify our business to a great extent. To sustain as a growth leader, it’s crucial to diversify to minimise the economic risks inflicted by COVID-19 lockdowns. Besides, Gupta Power aims to sustain the growth trajectory by virtue of its continuous and relentless focus on product quality, manufacturing expansion, technological know-how, and robust customer service. We are trying to minimise risks associated with future lockdowns by focusing on these key areas. Hopefully, they will yield results. The ‘smart city’ concept is gaining widespread limelight big time now. It focuses majorly on the development of clean and green cities which emphasises no facility downtime. The electrical industry plays a justified role in this regard, for any smart city by ensuring safety, continuous operation of any setup, measuring, and controlling several relative parameters. Gupta Power’s cutting-edge optical fibre is not only advancing smart broadband internet connections but doing a lot more. Fibre-optic cable is ideal to accommodate today’s smart city applications as well as future technologies. The existence of fibre optic cables opened the opportunities to have ultrabroadband and low latency communication in cities as opposed to the traditional copper cable network, which had its own limitations. The high-bandwidth and low-latency characteristics of fibre facilitate numerous key applications in smart cities, including smart grids for enhanced

energy efficiency, smart health examinations such as patient monitoring, sensor networks to improve public services, infrastructure usage and safety, smart mobility for optimising traffic flows & improving road safety, and lastly city-wide network connections that are available to its residents and visitors. Additionally, fire survival cables are the new reality of a smart city. With increased focus on electrical safety and in the light of fire hazards, Gupta Power’s fire survival cables are pioneering safety innovation and making our hospitals, office spaces, residential spaces, malls and traffic junctions a safer place. Green wires are another major innovation. They are marked by low smoke, and are lead-free and halogen-free. It’s just a matter of educating the end consumer on the benefits of green wires and Gupta Power is carrying out campaigns to sensitise and educate consumers on the benefits of adopting Green Wires.
2022: The year that will be No doubt, the pandemic-induced lockdowns have affected the usual flow of business and on-field activities like sales. But to stay ahead of the curve, we need to rethink and reinvent the marketing strategy. Gupta Power has been at the forefront of innovating new and fresh channels of sales and marketing by capitalising on online channels that are huge in this digital age.

Construction and manufacturing activities have mostly remained exempted from lockdown measures and will not have a multiplier effect on economic growth given its linkages to various industries like in the year 2020. Due to the rather stable demand for wires and cables currently, our company expects substantially higher growth in revenues from the electrical cables segment over a period of time owing to its well-spread sales and distribution network. We also plan to add products to our already vast portfolio. The electric wire and cable market in India is expected to grow by USD 1.65 billion, at a CAGR of almost 4 percent during 2021-2025. So these are positive signs to look forward to. Our strategy is to increase the production capacity and focus on the latest developments in smart cables, smart conductors, smart LED lightings, smart optic fibre cables and smart GIS substations up to 400 kV figure in the scheme of things. Future alliances, partnerships and expansions are also a part of the plan and we will plan it to the best of our strategic interests. The market is fragmented, and the degree of fragmentation will accelerate during the forecast period. Key players in the market have been launching several initiatives and introducing innovative products and services to cater to a larger target audience during the pandemic. Like I stated, smart conductors, smart LED lighting, smart optic fibre cables and smart GIS substations

Increasing investments in renewable energy projects have been an instrumental factor in influencing the growth of the high-voltage power cable market. Other market drivers include expansion and revamping of T&D infrastructure in India and growth in offshore wind energy. In addition to these, the wire and cable industry is heavily dependent on imports from countries such as China, the UAE, Russia, and Japan, and exchange rate variations can affect the industry considerably. The sector is prone to such vulnerability due to these factors. On top of all, providing quality products at a relatively low price will always remain a challenge. To stay ahead of the curve, we have to keep up with the latest trends in the wires and cables industry. This helps us stay relevant and add value to the lives of customers. Of late, there has been a major shift towards the usage of fire survival wires and cables, particularly in the usual areas. At Gupta Power, we make sure to follow the mandate of the National Building Code of India (NBC). The usage of fire survival cables is accelerating in public buildings and constructions, such as market complexes, hospitals, cinema halls, parks, etc. Another major trend shaping the global wires and cable industry is the enhanced usage of Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LS0H) instead of PVC Wire due to its safety hazards. The trend is yet to catch up with the Indian market but as a company in a dynamic field, we have to foresee such trends and implement them to be a market leader and Gupta Power has been doing exactly the same.

Sterlite Power: Thrust on Renewables and Transmission Projects holds the key for growing Power Sector Mr. Manish Agarwal, President & CEO – Infrastructure and Solutions Business, Sterlite Power Transmission Ltd.
2021: The year that was 2021 has been a mixed bag for most businesses; however, on a net basis, we, at Sterlite Power, had more positives. Earlier in the year, we flipped the prestigious Northeast Region Transmission project which is geared to light up homes in India’s Northeastern states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura. In the context of the ongoing RE Integration into the grid, the project will play a crucial role as a carrier of clean energy, as it connects various hydro and gas-based sources of power to the national grid and will play a vital role in reducing the intermittency of renewables. In October this year, we also won the prominent Nangalbibra-Bongaigaon inter-state power transmission project. The project elements consist of a new 220/132 kV substation at Nangalbibra and laying of ~130 km of 400kV DC transmission line connecting Bongaigaon in Assam to Nangalbibra in Meghalaya across the river Brahmaputra. The project will also have ~20km of 132kV DC line connecting Hatsinghmari in Assam to Ampati in Meghalaya. With this project win, Sterlite Power now has a portfolio of 26 projects across India and Brazil, which includes projects under various stages of development and those that have been sold. Besides a strong financial performance, we have received several global and national accolades, including from ET, IPMA, and the Asset AAA Infrastructure Awards. Access to electricity is a significant driver for prosperity and human development. The transmission sector plays a critical role in ensuring 24X7 quality and affordable power for all on the demand side. With India’s target of 500 GW of renewable capacities on the generation side by 2030, we are focussed on key technologies that are solving some of the toughest challenges of energy delivery. Upgrading existing infrastructure with High Performance Conductors (HPCs), where Right of Way is severely constrained, has become essential – at least 20 utilities in the country have adopted this transmission philosophy. Similarly, to resolve land acquisition challenges, India’s first vertical GIS substations were built in Gurgaon. A conventional GIS substation of similar capacity generally requires 12 acres of land, but this innovative solution is built only on 3.8 acres resulting in a 75 percent reduction in land footprint. India’s commitment in COP 26 summit was hailed worldwide when Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked about achieving the net zero emissions target by 2070. A significant step towards this is the commitment towards adopting 500GW of RE capacities by 2030. With this strong thrust on RE, all associate sectors and especially transmission will see substantial investments. RE is going to be the game-changer. As per the Report of the Task Force at Department of Economic Affairs Ministry of Finance Government of India titled ‘National Infrastructure Pipeline (DEA, National Infrastructure Pipeline)’, total capital expenditure of INR 14 lakh crore in power (including INR 3-4 lakh crore in transmission) would be required over fiscals 2020 to 2025 on power projects. In this context, associated sectors including transmission will see substantial investments. Additionally, The National Committee on Transmission, which oversees transmission planning and also draws up perspective plans has been tremendously active. In recent meetings, multiple projects have been approved. Given the visibility, we see a total transmission pipeline of INR 70,000 crore.

Apar Industries: Hoping to Increase Export Sales from 15 Percent to 30 Percent Mr. Vijay Kumar Bajaj, Chief Operating Officer, Apar Industries Ltd.
2021: The year that was The year 2021 was a much better year compared to 2020. The demand for almost all products increased considerably and the cable was no exception. The projects that were stalled earlier got activated and the project owners were in a hurry for its completion. The stock markets boomed showing a highly positive outlook. The Aatmanirbhar Bharat policy also helped to generate more demand due to restricted or limited imports. The defence sector opened up, railways and other infrastructure also got a boost by more government funding. Investment in the renewable power sector also increased considerably. The business volume has exceeded the pre-COVID level of 2019 and the trend continues to be positive. While there has not been any capacity expansion (other than debottlenecking) in 2021 as we were trying to first consolidate our business to pre-COVID levels, looking at the increasing demand and very favourable outlook, action has been initiated for a significant capacity enhancement that will reflect in 2022. The demand in the international market is increasing and China is not having much favourable situation due to its policies, there is an opportunity for Indian cable products in the international market. We have worked in that direction for product development and international product certifications, which have helped in 2021 and will also help in the following years. We expect to be a significant player in the international market.
2022: The year that will be We expect to do a business volume better than the pre-COVID level, though there is too much competition at present in the domestic market. We have worked to improve our exports and the impact will come next year both in volume and profitability. We have carved out ourselves as a quality product supplier over the last several years and will continue to do so. We are working towards better market reach both in the domestic and in exports. We are in the process of obtaining several consultants and key customer approvals in the domestic market to enhance our reach. HPL Electric & Power: Emphasising on Technological Advancements with Strong R&D Mr. Gautam Seth, Joint Managing Director, HPL Electric & Power Ltd.
2021: The year that was As we all know, the year 2021 was quite challenging for all of us. Despite these ups and downs, we have bagged many contracts and orders. We have received numerous contracts, apart from an order of INR 372 crore for switchgear, cables, and other relevant accessories for low-cost housing projects in Andhra Pradesh, we have also secured the order for INR 178.9 crore for supplying smart meters. The order was received from the state’s largest private utility in eastern India. These prestigious orders were won in the face of stiff competition. Such achievements are a big win for us, strengthening our position as one of the country’s major electrical equipment manufacturers. We have a strong R&D foundation with an emphasis on developing technological advancements in electrical equipment solutions for a variety of applications and requirements. We have various sets of equipment to cater to the needs of the market. Recently, we have launched three new switchgear products - DC switch disconnector up to 1500 V DC and 800 V AC in 2, 3, and 4 pole configuration at 14th Edition of Renewable Energy Expo 2021. These products are best-in-class and offer the latest technology and innovative design for long-term durability. The USP of the recent product launched is that it can be used in solar/ PV applications as well as traditional PV applications. The load break switch is a high-performance, well-built switch with a small footprint. From low voltage to 800V AC, it provides safe isolation. Furthermore, the switches include an inbuilt safety feature. This provides efficiency that leads to low power losses. The new DC Disconnectors are designed specifically for PV applications and are extremely durable. Whereas in the smart meter’s category, we have announced the launch of the smart meter with Narrowband- Internet of Things (NB-IoT). This is a new 4G and 5G technology that gives smart meters their own dedicated channel for smart metering, avoiding any reduction in performance from interference or obstruction on the public network. Data would flow smoothly through a dedicated channel using this technology, and problems caused by public network congestion would no longer impact the smart meter performance. It will also enable the collection of a greater number of remote meter readings, assuring consumer safety.

Havells India: Revival of Real Estate and Increase in Infra & CAPEX Support Demand Recovery Mr. Arvind Agrawal, Vice President, Havells India Ltd.
2021: The year that was The year 2021 was indeed unique as the COVID-19 contagion ravaged socio-economic developments globally. We started off on a good note across segments both on turnover and margins. Unfortunately, the second wave of COVID gripped the country with even higher ferocity leading to localised lockdown, this impacted the business in the first quarter of the current FY. Post-COVID, the demand recovery has been encouraging, supported by the revival of real estate and an increase in the Infra & CAPEX. Inflationary trends in commodity prices have been a concern but we expect demand to be resilient. Despite the COVID-led challenges, we have expanded our distribution network and launched new products across verticals which resulted in business growth. We launched solar and shielded cables last year. The shielded cables act to reduce the volume and intensity of all kinds of electrical noise and EMI, decreasing the adverse effects & losses on signals and transmission. Our solar cable category has witnessed encouraging demand from consumers, especially in the commercial segment. It offers prominent features such as environmental sustainability and increases energy efficiency. The transmission mode of solar energy power generation is cheap, clean and reliable. This increases the bankability of solar projects and has therefore emerged as an important component for such initiatives. The range is manufactured at our Alwar plant, which is one of India’s largest cable manufacturing plants, ensuring good quality products.
2022: The year that will be For the coming year - 2022, Havells, as a brand, will go deeper into making homes smarter and powering a holistic digital experience. Key Trends Driving the Growth FY 2020-21 was a period of significant challenges, which has left a lot of learning for us. Most of us have used devices and appliances exhaustively during lockdowns and experienced the benefits of using quality products. Consumers can now clearly identify the need for virtuous products and demand smart devices for convenience. This change in consumer behaviour will lead to a phenomenal increase in demand for Havells products for electrical protection devices, highquality house wires and other wiring accessories, as only a handful of brands offer superior quality and exclusive range for every customer segment.
Havells will also largely benefit from the increased spending in infrastructure development under self-reliant India drive as architects, builders, and electrical contractors are emphasising for ‘Make in India’ brands that match (or improve upon) the global quality standards. Our endeavour to introduce innovative products which ensure safety and improved efficiency is further strengthened with demand for Havells products from the industrial and OEM sector. A new trend that the electric wire and cable industry has witnessed is the increasing sales of HVDC power cables. The benefits of HVDC cables are reduced
transmission losses, lightweight and dimensions. HVDC cables such as HVDC underground cables and HVDC light cables play an indispensable role in long-distance and high-voltage power transfer and submarine power transmission. We are working closely with many specification agencies to provide customised engineered solutions in the minimum time frame. We firmly believe that India will witness a new chapter in the growth story and Havells will be a key contributor in the electrical sphere with a superior comprehensive range of switchgear & switches, house cables and other domestic appliances.

Mr. Bishan Jain, Director, Goldmedal Electricals Pvt. Ltd.
Goldmedal Electricals: Integrating Technological Innovations and Providing a Safe and Reliable Experience is the Mantra 2021: The year that was The year 2021 has been a good year for Goldmedal Electricals Pvt. Ltd. not just in the wires and cables category, but in overall products. Along with a continued increase in sales, Goldmedal Electricals also grew in terms of visibility and its portfolio of products. The company is on the path to carrying forward these developments into the coming year. We have launched a new category of products for fans and very soon, we will be launching wires and cables under the ‘Air’ brand. These wires will be marketed on a pan-India basis and will be competitively priced.
2022: The year that will be The focus of the next few years will be to increase the visibility of the Goldmedal Electricals across the country. The company has always enjoyed the reputation of being a quality brand that creates innovative products in the industry – with increased visibility, the general consumer would also become aware of the vast portfolio and superior quality of its products. While the company foresees a huge increase in demand in the future, it is not resting on its laurels. The year 2021-22 will see quite a few major announcements in terms of new product launches that will establish the company as a leading brand in the electrical industry. The company has a pan-India presence with offices in almost all states in India. However, there are certain locations within the country where the company needs to establish itself further. This will require a mix of local and national level branding efforts to make the brand stronger. Local-level activities involve engaging with the electricians and retailers at the grassroots level. We have an in-house developed mobile app called ‘Dhan Barse’ that ensures personal connection with these stakeholders. Along with this, we also hold regular ‘nukkad’ meetings to train, communicate, and recognise the effort of every stakeholder. National level campaigns will support these efforts to make sure there is higher recognition and acceptability of our brand in every Indian home.
Key Trends Driving the Growth At the basic level, people expect products in this segment to make their lives better and safer. If a company can deliver innovation along with this mix, it will lead to even higher acceptance amongst consumers. With the adoption of technology at a rapid rate, any brand that can integrate technological innovations while providing a safe and reliable experience can be a winner.

WCI: Could you shed some light on the manufacturing
facility and production capacity of Polycab in the LDC segment? BS: One of the strongest points of Polycab is its manufacturing capability not only with respect to the LDC segment but across all its verticals. For LDC wires, we have our manufacturing plants in Halol and Nashik. We have installed machine lines with a manufacturing capacity of up to 30m per second. To complement these heavy-duty machines, we have our own copper refining plant at Ryker, which makes sure that we never run out of copper. We have our own compounding plant in Halol which fabricates the insulation materials and provides the same raw materials to extruders in the wire manufacturing assembly line. Polycab has the highest manufacturing capacity among all the wire and cable manufacturers in India.
WCI: Tell us more about the Green Wires. What factors make them eco-friendly and energy-efficient? BS: After undertaking thoroughly extensive R&D, Polycab evaluated components that would be required to make energy savings while reducing the carbon footprints and meeting the global benchmarks set by several regulating authorities and certifying bodies, IGBC (Indian Green Building Council) being one of them. The IGBC states the objective is to reduce electrical consumption by 20 percent by using efficient appliances and electrical equipment. Going by the size and quantity, the wiring network is arguably the biggest installation in any building, and it contributes a lot to the energy consumption of a building.
WCI: Going ahead, what are the plans of the company, and what will be the major strategies to strengthen its positioning in this segment? BS: We will be working on several aspects like district penetration, influencer management, government approval, etc. Our aim is to make sure that we have a strong brand recall and strong brand loyalty among all our business enablers from consultants to our final users. We want partners to advocate for our products based on their quality, our management, and efficiency.
The conductor used in the Green Wires is crafted from 99.97 percent pure electrolytic grade copper due to which the current-carrying capacity of the wire increases by up to 20 percent. A normal branded single core unsheathed cable in 1100V grade of conductor nominal area 6 sq mm has a current-carrying capacity of 37A. For the same specification, a green wire has a current-carrying capacity of 44.4A which is 20 percent higher.
We will also launch new products to serve customers and the requirements of the entire price spectrum. In addition, we will also be focusing on tapping every area based on their potential making sure we don’t overstress a region for distribution.
The insulator of Green Wires has a technical nomenclature of HR-FRLSH-LF. It has a major component of Type C PVC compound which is heat retardant, flame retardant, generates low smoke, has very low Halogens, and is Lead-free. The heat resistant property of wire helps to prevent the insulation from degradation as well as it subsides the heat from conductors to the environment, which prevents the wire from getting overheated and thus controls the increase in temperature. As the temperature is controlled, the resistance, which is a function of the temperature, is also prevented from going up, and thus this leads to an even lesser generation of heat. Heat is the major source of

There is a huge entry cost and market penetration cost barrier in the wire and cable industry. This industry can never go asset-light. The procurement of raw materials, establishing workshops and factories, testing laboratories, supply chain partners, depots, warehouses, etc attract titanic investments. A very few Indian manufacturers can process and handle large orders and shipments of wires, cables, and other electrical commodities. This is because most manufacturers rely on imports and outsource raw materials and some simply don’t have the plant and machinery to handle huge demands.
In addition to the operational capabilities, the insulation crafted for Green Wires is completely recyclable implying there’ll be no need to dump it in landfills. The wires are RoHS and REACH compliant. In order to be RoHS and REACH compliant, the insulation must have elements like Cadmium, Lead, Mercury, Chromium, etc. under a prescribed safe limit. This makes Green Wires safe for building occupants as well as for the installation engineers, subsequently due to lack of carcinogenic materials, the occupants stay safe from the risk of cancer. The advanced raw materials used in Green Wires enhance the stability and lifetime of the product and its manufacturing of the wires takes place in a green zone. Due to this, there is no external contamination keeping the product as well as the environment safe.
We, at Polycab India Ltd., have multiple large-scale manufacturing hubs, a strong quality testing team and infrastructure, high volume warehouses and depots, a pan-India distributor base, and good logistics partners as well. As specified earlier, all these aspects enable us to provide the shortest turnaround and delivery time.
WCI: Please share your views on the market trends and the growth you foresee in various segments.
Encompassing all the above-said factors, Polycab is quite well-poised to meet any variety and scale of demand in the future.
BS: India may be staring at electricity shortages in the coming months, because of the availability issues of coal stocks at most of its power plants. This can be taken as a gentle warning from nature to reduce our dependence on a non-renewable source of electricity production – Coal. The entire electrical infrastructure will slowly shift to green and renewable resources. India is going to see a power surge in the coming future due to the sharp GDP and economic growth. There has been a rise from 620 units per capita in 2010 to 1340 units per capita in 2021 and it is expected to grow at a sharper rate in the coming future. To be able to withstand this rise, the infrastructure will have to be of the utmost quality, and we can’t have a huge quantity of non-sustainable and hazardous products in our system. The combination of all these factors increases the demand for green wires.
Reports state that India is going to invest a lot in infrastructure growth, with modern-era public utility facilities (airports, railway stations, etc). This investment will revolve back and soon India will see a huge investment in private real estate and infrastructure construction too. Several industrial corridors are being developed. As the connectivity improves, industries will be set up. As industries are set up, residential projects for the working staff in those industries will begin. Commercial complexes, small businesses, recreational facilities, and so on, will follow subsequently. All these new developments will skyrocket the demand for electrical commodities. Manufacturers should buckle up, expand their facilities, and ensure a structured supply

WIRE HARNESSING Automotive Wiring Undergoing Transformation as Electric Vehicles take over the Roads
The electronic content in cars has exponentially expanded, leading to more than 150 pounds of wiring in a single vehicle. As vehicles increase in complexity, a new wiring paradigm is needed. Wires are not just wires anymore. They have become incredibly sophisticated, since automobiles began to resemble computers on wheels. The 1950s and 1960s are no longer relevant. Power steering, electric windows, and the occasional air conditioner were the pinnacle of luxury motoring back then. A luxury car’s metal covering now conceals a plethora of sensors, actuators, control units, high-performance processors, infotainment systems, and other components, and additional features and components are being added at breakneck speed: vehicles had 25 percent fewer circuits five years ago than today’s cars. In five years, that number will have increased by another 30 percent.
www.wirecable.in
The automotive wiring industry is undergoing a transformation. The way firms design, create, manufacture, and supply car wiring harnesses has changed dramatically, thanks to the increasing growth of electronic content in vehicles and the coming of electrification and autonomous systems. The automotive business is moving at a dizzying speed, and automakers have had to make some significant portfolio modifications to keep up with shifting electronics demands. What does this entail for this market’s electronics designers? New electrical architectures are being considered by automotive OEMs in order to simplify harness designs and reduce wiring complexity and expense. The automotive wire industry now is essentially the same as it was 80 years ago. Automobile wire harnesses are still made by hand, with thousands of components attached one by one. The design
44
architecture has a significant impact on OEM business models. Wiring harnesses are a labor-intensive product for Tier One OEMs, thus they use the lowest-cost labor available around the world. Each vehicle’s wire harness contains thousands of part numbers, and the finished result weighs 150 pounds or more. As a result, they must organize all of the items’ materials and components and ship them all over the world. This results in a long, complex supply chain with hundreds of design modifications along the way, each of which must be monitored, implemented, and validated separately. Simplified automobile wire harness designs will enable for more automated assembly and delivery procedures, as well as enabling OEMs to make modifications more quickly, lowering costs across the board. In addition to the raw materials needed to construct wiring harnesses, such as connectors,

terminals, wire, tape, and other components, OEMs must keep a specific amount of inventory on hand to avoid supply disruptions. There are numerous hidden costs associated with the existing working model. OEMs stand to gain a lot of money if they can automate a portion of their manufacturing by inventing innovative wire harness architecture. Connectivity Is Essential The wire harness is the spider’s web in the middle of it all, and it’s required for almost every component of a modern car. As a result, building the wire harness of a cutting-edge automobile, bus, or truck necessitates both a broad grasp of car components such as sensors, actuators, batteries, and motors, as well as a mastery of the nuts and bolts of electrical system design. To build a wire harness that is clever and cost-effective, as well as easy to assemble and service, you must know everything about wires and connectors and have a thorough understanding of the car as a whole.
www.wirecable.in
The Next Generation of Wire Harness The next-generation wire harness will allow more powerful electrical systems to operate vehicles, because the latest electrical connectivity allows ever more signals from on-board sensors, other vehicles, road-based infrastructure, and satellites to be streamed into a high-performance computer. The computer will then send signals to the brakes, steering, and other control systems via the wire harness. All of this is progressively growing into a technical infrastructure for electrification and autonomous driving - an attractive vision, to be sure, but one fraught with difficulties. More Wiring, Less Room To begin with, as previously stated, there is the cross-pressure issue: when more sensors and other devices are added to the vehicle, more wires are required to connect them to the vehicle’s system. Vehicles, on the other hand, aim to get smaller, thinner, and lighter. So, where do you store the fresh wire spaghetti when you’re short on space? It’s difficult to
46
get rid of anything because all of the standard vehicle components are still required for it to function effectively. Wire harness designers are in a furious battle with the rest of the development teams for a new vehicle. They all require a piece of the dwindling space for their specialized usage; therefore everyone must compromise in order to make it work. Future of Wire Harness Wire harnesses, without a doubt, are rapidly developing to address the problems offered by electrification and autonomous driving. Wire harness design of the future, according to experts, will most likely be completely different from what it is now. Wires are used now because they are flexible and easy to route, however, wires may not be used in the future. The majority of the signals could be transmitted wirelessly if satisfactory solutions are developed to bypass all of the cyber security challenges that will surely arise. Fine Products: Ensuring Complete Traceability of Process at Every Stage ‘’Lately, with the development of REACH and ROHS compliant compounds, the company has made a big leap into the industry for specialised segment and has shown a relative concern towards the environment by going green in compounds as well.’’ Wire & Cable India: Kindly brief us about your business
journey and product portfolio.
Dev Bengani: Fine Products Pvt. Ltd., established in 1994 under the guidance of Mr. Ajeeth Bengani (Managing Director), is into manufacturing PVC compounds and has its works at Bhiwadi, Rajasthan. As the name suggests, it believes in transparency at all levels of its operations and ensures they are carried out in a very controlled manner. A young aspiring company, just 26 years as of now, certified by DNV to the prestigious ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015, sees many more years of dedicated hard work to prosper and grow. The journey started with developing PVC compounds required for general purpose in cables, be it sheathing and insulation grade for power/flexible or flat cable, shoe as well as auto sector.
Gradually, it ventured into the high-tech compounds required for cables, developing them for varied conditions such as low temperature (suitable for -55 degrees), heat resistance (suitable for temperature ranging 85-125 degrees), flame retardant with low smoke emersion, UV and oil resistant & UL grade. Lately, with the development of REACH and ROHS compliant compounds, it certainly has made a big leap into the industry for specialised segments and has shown a relative concern towards the environment by going green in compounds as well.

INTERVIEW laboratory, compounds at Fine Products undergo a very strict quality control check at every stage of production from the very beginning i.e., raw material, in-process, or the finished lot at the end. Complete traceability of the process is ensured at every stage to develop highstandard products with adequate finesse. A compound can be traced to its very first form of raw material and each lot upon completion is given a unique identification number which helps us to trace its very existence. Being certified by DNV to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 standards very well encourages us to maintain this decorum of quality and social responsibility.
certified by DNV to ISO 14001: 2015, has empowered our focus towards a healthy green environment which should be in the interest of all. WCI: Tell us the current market presence and expansion plans – both domestically and internationally. DB: Currently, we are catering to domestic users
only, and going global is very well in our near-term growth plan. The development of REACH compliant compounds and getting certified to ISO 14001:2015 certainly will add as a booster to this objective. Maximum countries worldwide are adopting the green culture and we are also completely focussed on inculcating this habit in our operations.
WCI: What proportion of your product range is dedicated to the wire and cable segment? Tell us some of the products along with their USPs.
WCI: How do you view the wire & cable industry and the market potential of cable compounds? What are the recent trends?
DB: The proportion can’t be defined here, rather it
depends upon the usage. Though the major chunk will always go to metal i.e. copper or aluminium; but to make any cable complete and safe to use, the coating of PVC/XLPE has to be there. However, the coating of whether PVC or XLPE depends on their application. Railways require PVC compound with a high IR value and we comply with it to the fullest making it one of our USPs. FRLS was launched after thorough testing from government agencies like ERDA/CPRI. RoHS and REACH compliance was found adequate after getting our samples tested from SGS Lab. A complete examination from a government-certified lab is the only benchmark for us to launch any new, critical grade.

Can Aluminum Really Beat Copper in Underground Power Cables? Frédéric Lesur, Senior Engineer for High Voltage Cable Systems and Power Grids at Nexans, explains underground power cables are playing an increasingly important role in the electrification of the world. The excellent conductivity of copper makes it appear the natural choice for the conductor material. But that isn’t always the case. Experience with France’s transmission grid has shown that aluminum can sometimes prove to be the superior option when a comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) is carried out. Frédéric Lesur, Senior Engineer for high voltage cable systems and power grids, explains. There are many criteria that must be considered when selecting the conductor for an underground cable

system. These include electrical considerations, thermal design, installation techniques, mechanical stresses and so on. And of course, cost is an important factor, not just the purchase cost but the overall cost of operating the cable throughout its life. Environmental impact is also an increasingly important factor at the earliest stage of the cable design.
aluminum – by a factor of 1.64. But it is over three times heavier and much more expensive. Copper prices can fluctuate considerably, but there have been times this century when the cost of copper has been five times that of aluminum. What these factors mean is that while an aluminum conductor
Electrical resistance For underground cables, only two metals are used: copper (Cu) and aluminum (Al), due to their excellent conductivity. The best metal for conducting electricity is actually silver. Unexpectedly, gold comes in at third place – behind copper, while aluminum is fourth. Copper has much better electrical conductivity than

must be bigger to carry the same current as copper, the aluminum cable can be more cost-effective to purchase and easier to handle.
Losses in the conductor account for the major proportion of the energy lost in an underground cable. Figure 3 shows the typical total losses for cables installed in France as a function of their current rating. The curves end at the steady-state permissible current rating, associated with the maximum temperature of the insulation material (90°C for XLPE = cross-linked polyethylene). The order of magnitude is 30 W/m per cable.
There are a few variations such as enameled copper wires (CUE) or oxidized aluminum wires. Experience in the French grid As a concrete example, Figure 2 illustrates cable ratings calculated according to the IEC 60287 standard for different types and sizes of conductor. This is based on a typical French installation in a semi-urban area, with the cables laid in PVC ducts embedded in concrete with a trefoil geometry.
Réseau de Transport d’Electricité (RTE), the French transmission system operator (TSO) has produced statistics showing that underground cable systems operate more than 95% of the time at a current rating lower than 60% of their maximum rating. This means that the losses are normally well under their maximum
It is interesting to note the relative performance of the conductors. In one example, a 2500 Al cable has very close to the same rating as a 2000 Cu cable.

INDUSTRY WATCH value. The remaining 5% of the operating time matches with the peak values and most constraining conditions, such as in a severe winter period with extensive use of electrical heating.
The investment costs increase with the conductor size, while the cost of losses decreases as there is less electrical resistance. The combination of both trends leads to U-shaped curves with an optimal conductor size.
The conclusion is that an underground cable is therefore operated generally in conditions leading to “acceptable” losses. This point is essential, considering that power losses dominate the cable’s environmental impact. The closer to the maximum point the cable is operated, then the greater the environmental footprint and the higher the operational cost.
In the example, 1600 Al is the most cost-effective conductor to transmit 700 A over a project life of 50 years. Yet, 630 Al would have been selected from a strict thermal design point of view. This optimization is not only of an economic nature. The lower losses also play a favorable role in terms of environmental impact. The benefits can include less risk of thermal aging, reduced risk of thermal runaway due to uncontrolled soil drying, a larger safety margin to handle load peaks or unexpected hot spots, margins for overloads, etc. Furthermore, lower losses help in limiting global warming.
Economical design of cable conductors When designing a cable system the aim is to stay within the current rating dictated by thermal behavior. Effectively, the cable is designed not to exceed the maximum temperature of the insulating layer in any operational mode. Most of the time, the design engineer will select the size of conductor that allows the required operating temperature while staying on the safe side within a wide range of standardized sizes.
The prospects for very large aluminum conductors While maximum standardized cross-sections of conductors have moved from 1600 to 2500 mm² within recent years, some manufacturers are now offering new solutions with aluminum conductors of 3000 or 4000 mm², pushing the present limits of copper conductors. Studies have been carried out to assess the interest in these huge components in terms of performance, installation, economics and environmental impact. They show that, for a given current rating, a cable with a very large aluminum conductor generates less energy losses than a cable with a smaller copper conductor of one or two sections.
Until recently, this approach was regarded as offering the lowest investment cost. However, the global cost of a power link also depends on the actual cost of the energy losses. A bigger conductor, although more expensive on initial purchase, may generate lower losses than the thermally designed conductor. Therefore, it can become significantly more cost-effective after a few decades. This approach is explored in Figure 4 that looks at the case for a cable system carrying 700 A. Data is plotted on the graph as a function of the conductor size (two colors are used for Al and Cu conductors) and the investment cost of the installed system. The investment cost is made up of the actual cost of the losses at the specified current rating and the total cost.
The lower investment cost of the resulting aluminum cables could bring significant savings, despite the increased cost of installation (excavation, cable laying, assembly of joints, etc.). Design engineers then have to balance the attractive global cost with a number of additional constraints. These include increased civil works, more rigid conductors and lower strength to resist pulling during installation, increased size of drums or lower delivery length on site, which means shorter sections and more joints. A larger conductor diameter also involves accessories of bigger size. Perhaps the most significant barrier is that there is currently no experience in terms of the qualification of such huge cable systems. Utilities and manufacturers will need to collaborate to address this challenge. However, at the conductor sizes used today there is substantial practical experience showing clearly that aluminum represents an important alternative to copper. TS Conductor Creates a New Class of Conductors to Make Electricity Networks Greener The new class of conductors is created by the company based on a combination of carbon composite and aluminum encapsulation protection for the composite core. Transmission and Distribution conductor firm TS Conductor aims to make electricity networks greener by increasing penetration of renewables and energy efficiency. As per the reports, a new class of conductors is created by the company based on a combination of carbon composite and aluminum encapsulation protection for the composite core. The conductors are compatible with industry standard field practice and can be used for line reconductoring, building new lines, upgrading energy efficiency, and insulation upgrades of distribution networks. They can be installed with the same tools and operating procedures as ACSR conductor (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced). Talking about the development, Dr. Jason Huang, President and CEO, TS Conductor, says, “Energy generation through renewable sources has
increased, however, the transmission segment is often overlooked. There is a dire need for new cable technologies that can accelerate the connection of renewables. Since the emergence of the ACSR conductor in 1908, there has been no substantial change in overhead conductor technology used by transmission and distribution grid operators.” A pioneer in high-efficiency conductors for electricity grids, TS Conductor recently got funding from Breakthrough Energy Ventures, National Grid Partners and a subsidiary of NextEra Energy. The investors reportedly joined Talkot and Hervé Touati in its oversubscribed Series-A financing, for a total of USD 25 million. The new capital would be utilised to build the company’s first state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in the United States. Founded in 2018, TS Conductor plans to reduce

WIRE & CABLE is a top priority at HEW-Kabel and traditionally provides valuable impetus for the development of forward-looking technologies and processes. The company also places future orientation and the highest demands on its suppliers. “As a manufacturer, we are committed to delivering the highest quality to our customers. Reliable quality control is essential to meet our customers’ requirements,” says Darius Gach, Head of Quality at HEW-Kabel. There are several quality control methods on the market. However, they must meet certain characteristics. “SIKORA is innovation-driven and therefore very similar to us in terms of requirements. The CENTERVIEW 8000 offers the best performance regarding the integration into our production lines,” adds Christoph Dohr, Test Equipment Officer at HEW-Kabel. According to Dohr, competitors
could not deliver a comparable overall package to HEW. “We use the SIKORA systems in our lines to control diameter, wall thickness and centricity. The advantage for us is the easy integration into the existing production lines. The measuring values of the CENTERVIEW 8000 are used to monitor our specifications and those of our customers,” says Dohr. Quality as well as product safety and conformity will continue to play an essential role at HEW-Kabel in the future. New technologies are conquering the mobility market and creating new access for related industries. The energy concept of the future is inconceivable without electromobility. What is certain, however, is that digitization will increasingly find its way into ultramodern machines and plants. For example, the topic of “autonomous driving” is being discussed, which in turn requires self-sufficient safety
sensors and a variety of different state-of-the-art cable solutions (including data cables). “No matter what the market decides, HEW-Kabel will provide innovative solutions as usual. Industry 4.0 is also an issue here. Digitization, paperless documentation, extensive provision of data such as monitoring and evaluation of data from the measuring devices, such as from SIKORA, will become even more important in the future,” says Gach. The company works on high-quality, tailor-made new developments under the slogan “tailor-made solution”. For example, the cable manufacturer develops applications outside the high-temperature sector such as cables for wheel speed sensor technology, high speed data (HSD) or high voltage cables (LV216). A strong partner is also SIKORA with innovative measuring devices for quality control of the cables during extrusion.

Prysmian Eases the Path to FTTX and 5G Network Deployments with 180 µm Fibre Cables Available in fibre counts from 192 to 576, the Sirocco Extreme cables benefit from the use of Prysmian’s PicoTube technology. December 28, 2021 Prysmian Group has extended its Sirocco Extreme range of microduct cables to include its newly launched – 576f cable. The Sirocco Extreme cables provide world record diameters and fibre densities for blown microduct cables. The new cable has 576 fibres in a diameter of 8.2 mm, providing a fibre density of 10.9 fibres per mm2, and can be installed into a 10 mm duct. Sirocco Extreme microduct cable utilises Prysmian’s BendBrightXS 180µm single-mode (ITU-T G.652.D, G.657.A2) bend-insensitive fibre which is fully compatible for splicing with any standard fibre.

TELECOM & OFC Ian Griffiths, Director R&D Telecom Business at Prysmian Group, remarks, “Bend-insensitive fibre optic cables are a crucial part of the world’s shift towards flexible and reliable connectivity. With their extreme fibre count and reduced diameter, Sirocco Extreme microduct cables make installations faster and more costeffective. Designed for installation
into microducts, they are ideally suited for blowing in high-density access, FTTX, and 5G networks.” Available in fibre counts from 192 to 576 and conforming to international standards for optical and mechanical performance, the Sirocco Extreme cables benefit from the use of Prysmian’s PicoTube technology. This makes them up to 15 percent
smaller than Sirocco HD microduct cables. Consequently, it is possible to install more fibres into a congested duct space and smaller ducts can be used for new installations, thus, reducing installation costs and the use of lesser raw materials. This provides further benefits of a decreased total cost of network deployment and a smaller environmental footprint.

EU Sets Anti-Dumping Duties on Optical Fibre Cable from China The European Union has imposed anti-dumping duties in the range of 19.7-44 percent on Chinese makers of single-mode fibre optic hybrid cables for telecoms networks. November 26, 2021 The European Union has imposed anti-dumping duties on Chinese makers of single-mode fibre optic hybrid cables for telecoms networks. The European optical fibre cable industry has a vital role in the EU’s digital agenda, as optical fibre cables are a strategic component in the transition to advanced broadband telecommunication networks in homes and for business in the EU. The tariff has been imposed in the range of 19.7 percent to 44 percent on single-mode, hybrid cables that combine fibre optic and copper
cables. However, the duties do not cover multimode optical fibre cables or cables for submarine use. On the basis of an investigation initiated by the Commission in September 2020 following a complaint lodged by Europacable, who represents more than 25 percent of the total EU production of optical fibre cables, there are pieces of evidence that come to light of dumping affecting their businesses from Chinese companies selling at over half the cost of producing the cables, or an average 123 percent dumping margin.

TRANSMISSION & DISTRIBUTION The merged company will have production capacities of 1 million MTPA of CR steel, 360,000 MTPA of hot-dip galvanized steel, 140,000 MTPA of tinplate, and 120,000 MTPA of tin-free steel. In view of the restructuring plans, the expansion plans are expected to be completed by March 2026 including – reducing the number of blast furnaces in Japan to 10 from 15. The reduction will lower its domestic crude steel production capacity by 10 million MTPA or about 20 percent of its overall output. “We will shift into high gear in full-scale overseas business that will ensure higher added value,” Hashimoto said, as Nippon Steel plans to build
up 100 million mt/year of crude steel production capacity globally, up from about 71 million mt/year at present. The output expansion includes doubling the production capacity of AM/NS India to 14 million mt/ year while a new 1.5 million mt/year electric arc furnace at its AM/NS Calvert venture in Alabama is due to be started up over the first half of 2023. Locally, Nippon Steel aims to start operating a new EAF at Hirohata in the first half of 2022 with a production capacity of 60,000 mt/month, which will be used for electrical steel sheet making. While expanding its crude steel
output, the Japanese steelmaker reiterated its goal to be carbonneutral by 2050, with plans to cut its carbon dioxide emissions down to 70 million mt/year by 2030 from 91 million mt in 2019. “Our idea of a ‘zero-carbon steel production process is to combine two steelmaking routes, utilizing their respective features: the BF and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) route, and the EAF route,” Hashimoto said. Zero-carbon steel “has its own big challenges,” Hashimoto said, pointing out that the “needed innovations” will cost about Yen 500 billion (USD 4.4 billion) for research and development and Yen 4 trillion to Yen 5 trillion in capital expenditure.

Chile Wants to Export Solar Energy to Asia via 15,000 km Submarine Cable The Antípodas project is chiefly aimed at capitalizing on the huge solar potential of the Atacama Desert. The electricity produced by between 200 and 600 GW of photovoltaic generation capacity may transmit power to Asian countries. November 19, 2021 Chile is going to build a submarine cable to outsource photovoltaic energy to China, as per the development shared by the Chilean Solar Energy Association – ACESOL – which quoted a statement by Chilean President, Sebastián Piñera, during the National Meeting of Entrepreneurs (ENADE). The project has been named Antípodas, which is targeted to capitalise on the huge solar potential of the Atacama Desert, Chile, which is the world’s driest nonpolar desert in the world, as well as the only desert to receive less precipitation than the polar deserts and the largest fog desert in the world. He explained that, through the cable, the electricity produced by between 200 and 600 GW of photovoltaic generation capacity may transmit
