A TRIBUTE TO PIONEER
Remembering Late Shri. R.K. Tyagi Ji
19 / 11 / 19 4 3 - 1 / 5 / 2 0 2 1
The Indian steel wire industry can never forget the indelible contribution of Late Shri. Raj Kumar Tyagi Ji, be it as a manufacturer of prototype machines or a mentor to entrepreneurs. Born into a farming family on 19 November 1943 at Ravali in Ghaziabad, Late Shri. R.K.Tyagi Ji pursued engineering and founded Assomac. With his hard work, dedication and vision, the Assomac Group soon became one of India’s leading names in the field of wire drawing machines, wire cutting machinery, and wire making machinery. Today, the company is known worldwide for its promise of quality products that stay ahead of time.
up to the completion, and helping in establishing and organising the units with his vast experience in the field. He developed various prototype machines which are performing efficiently at various establishments of the government. Besides machines for drawing ferrous and non-ferrous wires, he also developed CO2 wire drawing plant indigenously for the first time in India. He also bags the credit of carrying developmental work in the machinery building for drawing PC wires, CO2 wire, resistance wire, stainless wire, high carbon wire, and other categories of non-ferrous wire with very fine gauge. Late Shri. R.K. Tyagi Ji dedicated his life to making the Indian steel wire sector strong, prosperous and capable, and will always remain a source of inspiration for the people across the industry. He has earned the respect, and admiration of people across the spectrum for his simplicity and generosity.
After his first foreign trip to Germany in 1985, Late Shri. R.K. Tyagi Ji not only brought high-end technology to India but also made it affordable. He became the first Indian to be a member of the Board of Directors of Wire Association International Inc. USA for 5 years from 2005 to 2010. He was also the charter president of WAI-India Chapter and an ordinary member of the organisation since 1992.
The industry has lost a great guide to the pandemic on 1 May 2021 but his footsteps will forever be followed. On his 78th birth anniversary, Wire & Cable India remembers the visionary and pays tribute to his pioneering work.
He took a keen interest by participating as a panel member of various wire manufacturing units in the country, involving himself from the inception stage

A TRIBUTE TO PIONEER
A Tribute to the Pioneer of Steel Wire Industry A Firm Nationalist who Believed that the Indian Wire Industry must Grow
Mr. Mahesh Poddar, Chairman, Miki Wire Works Pvt. Ltd., Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha - Jharkhand)
The life and legacy of Shri. R.K. Tyagi Ji, Founder and Chairman, Assomac Machines Ltd. is a lesson and an inspiration in itself that deserves to be etched in public memory. Through the turbulent
times post-independence when India’s growth appetite was heavily dependent on imports and reliance on some few industries, it took a visionary like Shri. R.K. Tyagi Ji to break the mould. He took manufacturing at a different scale with in-house designing of the equipment and brought out gearboxes which proved highly instrumental in providing quality equipment to the steel wire industry in India. In addition to this, I would also draw people’s attention to the fact that till the 1970’s, India was heavily dependent on Europe for good machines or Kolkata/Howrah for crudely copied machines and he played a stellar role in manufacturing cost-competitive quality steel wire machines. I have
the privilege of sharing memories with him across the world on steel shows which culminated in late night chats. He was certainly ahead of his time when it came to using technology to its potential. At a personal level, he was a firm nationalist who believed that the Indian wire industry must grow to its full potential. He was an avid learner and a person who believed in sharing his expertise and knowledge with the rest. The Indian steel wire industry, whether big or small, has lost a dear friend but I am sure his legacy will continue to survive and grow through his able son, Ashish, who has taken the reins of the organisation. We will continue to fondly remember him for the foundation he built, upon which several of us stand today.
The Extraordinary Life that was Well-Lived
Mr. Arun Gupta, Chairman & Managing Director, Bansal Wire Industries Ltd.
www.wirecable.in
Death has taken away a genuinely warm individual, depriving so many others including us all of a good friend. When we heard that Shri. R.K. Tyagi Ji, Founder Chairman of Assomac Group is no more, we were shocked and saddened. On behalf of the Bansal family, I send our deepest condolences to Shri. Tyagi Ji’s family and the people of Assomac Group at this difficult time. While we mourn the loss of a colleague, we pay tribute and celebrate the extraordinary life that was well-lived. A life committed to the cause of driving growth in

the wire industry, introducing such innovative ideas and technology enabling the industry to realise its true potential. There are only a few people who have had such a profound impact on the future direction of our industry. Shri. Tyagi Ji was elegant in every way, the way he spoke with a soft inflection, his immense courtesy and concern for others. Not many leave behind the legacy of such dedication and accomplishment. Paying homage to a great personality.

Mr. Vijay Vedmutha, Managing Director, Bedmutha Industries Ltd.
The first thought which comes to my mind when I think about Shri. R.K. Tyagi Ji is that he was ‘Bhishma Pitamaha of Wire Industry in India’. He was futuristic in his thought and action as regards bringing new technology into
By heart, he was open and ever-ready to help and advice. He had a charismatic personality - where ever he entered, he used to charge up the atmosphere. He had a bright aura around him. A yogic by lifestyle and mentor to many entrepreneurs like me in the wire industry. He has left a strong legacy behind and a solid team to carry it forward. He has mentored a capable leader in Ashish Tyagi to carry forward the legacy and culture of Assomac which he cultivated during his time. I, on behalf of my company Bedmutha Industries Ltd. and my whole Bedmutha family, wish and pray God to rest his soul in peace. Our wholehearted support to Assomac team and Ashish Tyagi!
A Passionate Soul with Unparalleled Enthusiasm and Undying Spirit
Mr. Rajendra Agrawal, Chairman, Systematic Group
Shri.Tyagi Ji’s association with Systematic dates over two decades as a personal friend and as a strong supporter all through our journey. A passionate soul with unparalleled enthusiasm and undying spirit that inspired many just with his presence. We have many cherished memories of Shri.Tyagi Ji as a person who spread happiness where ever he went. There was never a dull moment around him. A self-made man with strong business ethics, but his human side was his real strength, always willing to extend a helping hand not only to colleagues but anyone in need. His absence is a personal loss to us and to the entire wire industry.
A Guiding Light for Steel Wire Industry Shri. Tyagi Ji was a guiding light for the steel wire industry. His untimely demise came as a bolt from the blue for all his friends and associates. His insight guidance and knowledge will be sorely missed by the entire steel wire industry.

Prime Minister Modi has announced a target to make India a USD 5 trillion economy by 2024-25 and infrastructure development is set to play a crucial role in this journey. A special economic and comprehensive package of Rs 20 lakh crores was announced under Aatmanirbhar Bharat giving special stress on the infrastructure sector. From roads and railways to housing and pipelines, every sector is witnessing infrastructure creation at an unprecedented pace which augurs well for the steel wire sector. Moreover, the country is set to witness an uptrend in demand for steel led by thrust on domestic production in aviation, defence, and automotive sectors. The announcements in Budget for the Financial Year 2021-22 which includes Capex allotment of INR 1,07,100 crore for Railways, INR 2,87,000 crore outlay for Jal Jeevan Mission, construction of roads under Bharatmala Pariyojana project, Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0, Scheme for Mega Textile Parks will certainly result in an increased demand for steel. Talking about the demand drivers, Mr. Mrinmoy Sarkar, Managing Director, Miki Steel Works Pvt. Ltd. says, “The per capita steel consumption will be enhanced markedly for better connectivity

within a short time with the development of high-speed trains like bullet trains along with Metro railways in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, apart from the defence item manufacturing.” PLI Scheme for Specialty Steel The Government has approved a Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Specialty Steel with a 5-year budgetary outlay of INR 6,322 crore. Besides boosting domestic production of steel, the PLI scheme is expected to attract potential investors, generate employment, entice the existing companies to add capacities and promote technology up-gradation in the sector. The scheme shall be applicable for five indicative product categories which include steel wires and electrical steel. Talking about the initiative, Mr. Vidya Rattan Sharma, Managing Director, Jindal Steel and Power Ltd. says, “The recently introduced PLI-scheme is projected to attract newer investments in the country in terms of setting up new steel producing plants. Thus, driven by government stimulus, continued focus on infrastructure creation, and healthy steel demand, the overall dynamics of the steel sector seem quite promising.” “With the government’s focus on infrastructure development to boost up the economy and support to

steel & automotive sectors through different PLI schemes, the demand looks positive,” adds Mr. Anurag Pandey, Executive-in-Charge, Global Wires India-Tata Steel Ltd. The Road Ahead In FY21, the production of crude steel and finished steel stood at 102.49 MT and 94.66 MT, respectively. According to CARE Ratings, crude steel production is expected to reach 112-114 million tonnes with an increase of 8-9 percent YoY in FY22. Talking about the future of the sector, Mr. Sunil Chordia, Chairman & Managing Director of Rajratan Group says, “The present scenario of the Indian steel industry is seemingly quite favourable and promising which can be attributed to various factors. Due to the change in the China policy, people are considering an alternative to Chinese products and India ranks as a top consideration as an alternative to Chinese supplies. Thus, the country has a huge potential of supplying value-added steel items to the global market.” Meanwhile, the latest report by MarketsandMarkets forecasts the global steel wire market size to grow from USD 93.1 billion in 2020 to USD 124.7 billion by 2025, at a CAGR of 6.0 percent.

Additionally, we have a number of large-scale customers engaged in the production of wires through wire drawing.
a great phase with respect to domestic manufacturing. The country has been witnessing increasing industry consolidation and stronger integration across steel value chains of major producers. In FY 2020-21, India’s steel sector witnessed an initial downturn, with governmentmandated lockdowns; however, towards the end of the second quarter, capacity utilisation was restored in most steel plants. For Indian companies, export opportunities have emerged as a key enabler in the face of the unprecedented challenges brought by the pandemic.
JSPL has pioneered the manufacturing of 121 meters as rolled long track rails and designed a facility to factory weld these rails in welded lengths of up to 484 meters with only 3 welds. These long-track rails are a testimony to our manufacturing capabilities. We are the first Indian company to manufacture value-added Head Hardened Rails used in Metro Rails and High-Speed corridor projects. In fact, we are India’s first company in the private sector, in 2020, to receive the status of ‘Regular Rail Supplier’ by Indian Railways.
The steel industry has been a core pillar of industrial development in India. The government of India has set a target of producing 300 million tonnes of steel from the present 143 million tonnes by the year 2030. At the same time, the recently introduced PLI-scheme is also projected to attract newer investments in the country in terms of setting up new steel producing plants. Thus, driven by government stimulus, continued focus on infrastructure creation, and healthy steel demand, the overall dynamics of the steel sector seem quite promising.

While the company is resolutely international in its outlook – with exports accounting for around 90 percent of its production – the manifold rise in domestic SS consumption in recent years raises new opportunities in the domestic space. Such growth has come off the back of a spurt in infrastructure projects, new and upgraded airports, metro railways and bus shelters, as well as stainless steel wall cladding, household applications like stainless steel modular kitchens, furniture, outdoor application, and transportation, among others. What is heartening is that government institutions have realised the long-term benefits of using stainless steel and its potential growth in India is huge.
WCI: Tell us about some of your specialised products along with their USPs. NK: Our products have many applications in industries
including petrochemicals, oil & gas, shipbuilding, structural designs, high-tensile cables and springs, boilers, pressure vessels, liquid storage terminals, liquid cargo ships, and automobiles, to name a few. Viraj Profiles is today one of the world’s largest manufacturers of flanges.
In terms of stainless steel production, India’s healthy ramp-up of output in recent years has earned it a global ranking along with other major global producers of stainless steel. This growth, however, has its limitations, and in order to fully expand its capacity, India should take care of issues like resistance to the use of stainless steel due to high initial cost, endemic power shortages, and high price volatility of nickel, alongside clamping down on the unrecognised sector producing cheap quality products, and also the issue of a shortage of scrap in the country.
The company also has its range of stainless steel welding wire, which finds application in fabrication work, the chemical industry, food processing equipment, pressure vessels, the automotive sector and various other industries. The wires – manufactured in various grades and compliant with global standards – are produced as per customer requirements for specific applications. The MIG wires come with various packaging options in plastic or metal spool options. The TIG wires, which are used in gas tungsten arc welding and whose surface is cleaned for hassle-free welding, have a marking or embossing done on each rod. The TIG wires are packed in plastic and paper tubes, allowing for convenient and safe transportation. The company also produces SAW wires – used in submerged-arc welding.

to witness the fastest growth in the future. Elsewhere, with the developed world focused on light-weighting automobiles to reduce global warming and emissions, the demand for stainless steel is expected to accelerate over the next couple of years, with its excellent formability behaviour combined with high strength leading many to tout SS as a suitable lightweight material for auto components.

We have already been exporting our fasteners and bright bars to some leading global automobile companies and are currently discussing the development of new products for other companies. Our range of welding wire products – new to our stable – has been received well so far in the Indian market and we are very hopeful to carve a niche for ourselves with such solutions in the international domain too.
options such as Spool SH460 and SH390 for spring wire and also developed a larger coil weight for spring wire. As a value addition to our packaging solutions, we have developed plastic strapping instead of metal strapping up to 1MT coils for easy handling and also to avoid damages.
In the past few years, the company has also acquired a new ring-rolling machine, a 2,000-tonne forging press and a 10-ton pneumatic hammer to enhance its production capacity, alongside having installed 15 new CNC machines and a big diameter machine for flanges. The company is already in the process of installing a few more drawing machines and high-efficiency grinding machines too. With such equipment in place, the company aims to meet the increasing demand for quality stainless steel flanges.
The household sector is also expected to witness a good demand while expanding and emerging applications in renewable energy, construction, healthcare and cryogenic industries will likewise provide good opportunities, and we are fully geared to respond to those market trends. As for the future, with a tremendous range of around 50,000 SKUs across various product categories, Viraj Profiles will not be looking for horizontal growth, but will rather be focusing on vertical growth. This is being done keeping in mind the requirement of our customers and the strategy is being developed in constant consultation with them. Viraj Profiles has nonetheless not ruled out new product development. With myriad markets and an ever-expanding range of applications, stainless steel is well known for being incredibly versatile – over a quarter of a century down the line, few could argue that Viraj Profiles Ltd. shares that valuable characteristic.
With much investment in its operations over the years, Viraj Profiles today boasts six manufacturing plants – each facility producing stainless steel (SS) wire rods, SS bright bars, SS fasteners, SS profiles, SS wires, SS welding wires and SS flanges. Our six plants boast a combined production capacity of 528,000 TPA, while the company also benefits from a 180,000 TPA section rolling mill. WCI: Share your outlook on the Indian steel sector. The plant is a port-based location that will have a manufacturing capacity of 60,000 TPA. Since we’ve already been approved with all the multinational tyre companies and formed strong relationships, we are intending to supply to them from our upcoming Chennai location. We are aiming to build on our existing market presence and strengthen the capacity to service the customers in a better way. The proposed investment is undertaken with the objective to cater to the international markets which we are not able to achieve from our existing Indore location since it is a land-locked location. Thus, the new plant will open up new avenues for the business positioning ourselves as a credible supplier in the global market. By the end of FY 2022-23, we expect to attain a 25 percent growth from our installed capacity at the close of FY 2020-21.
Moreover, we are certainly capable of enhancing the products and making new products as per the market requirements. Thus, we are very much aligned with the requirements of our customers. WCI: What are some prestigious projects for which the company has supplied the products? SC: Rajratan has cemented its position as a dependable
global supplier of bead wire to renowned qualitydemanding tyre manufacturing companies. Wire & Cable India: Could you please take us through the
business journey of your company? Ashwani Gupta: Vividh Wires was born out of a vision of creating better synergies between our existing group companies and enhancing value addition across our entire basket of stainless steel and high-nickel alloy products. As a group with over 40 years of experience in the steel industry, our Greenfield expansion into stainless steel wire drawing has empowered us to scale new heights over the last five years. In terms of volume, we have seen a steady growth YoY right from the company’s inception and our forecasted trajectory for the next three years is based on an even higher growth rate. Of course, the key challenge for us is to maintain our brand identity and ensure the high-quality standards that our customers have come to expect from us.

Domestically, we already have a very strong presence in North India. We plan to further increase our market presence in other regions, with a special emphasis on Southern India. The tireless efforts being put into R&D by our extremely dedicated team have opened up some interesting new markets for us and the primary objective for the near future is to consolidate our position in those niche markets. Also, with regard to the export market, we are looking at the North American market with an increased focus and already working towards attaining the required certifications.
The Indian stainless steel market is expected to continue growing at nearly 6-7 percent per annum over the next decade, so the opportunities are undeniably present.

AG: Starting out primarily from stainless steel wires for
weaving & fastener applications, we have branched out into many different segments such as welding wires, superfine wires, etc. We have also established a presence in the specialty nickel-alloy wires segment, and a lot of products now being made by us are import substitutes. At present, we are amongst the few manufacturers of wires as fine as 0.12MM in high-nickel alloys such as Inconel & Hastalloy.
As a company, we are strongly bullish on the potential of renewable energy in the steel industry. We are one of the few Indian companies in the stainless steel sector with a captive solar PV plant, and our push for ‘Green Steel’ or Zero Carbon Steel is only just beginning. We are targeting to go entirely off-grid in a phased manner with the commissioning of our second solar PV Plant, greatly reducing our carbon footprint as well as achieving significant cost savings on our production processes.
Owing to the specialised applications of these products, we have zero margins for error and this has compelled us to learn faster, improve efficiencies and enhance quality control measures throughout each and every stage of our manufacturing processes.
WCI: Share your outlook on the Indian steel sector. AG: The market has evolved drastically due to the

of wires being made by us, we have been fortunate to be associated with some prestigious companies and projects. We are the main suppliers of MIG and TIG wires for the Indian subsidiaries of a number of Japanese automobile and automotive component manufacturers. While it has been quite challenging at times, particularly due to the strict timelines emanating from their ‘Just In Time’ philosophy, we have also learnt a lot from their comprehensive approach to quality management. Also, an area of particular pride for us is that some of the High-Nickel alloy wires made by us have found extensive use in the oil & gas sector, primarily serving as a substitute for wires from North American and European manufacturers.
Due to the pandemic, many countries have been openly promoting protectionist policies and imposing restrictions to protect their domestic steel industry. Such protectionist policies, coupled with increased price volatility do raise some questions on the future market potential, but I strongly believe that stainless steel is a future-ready material and should easily surmount any short-term challenges. The Indian stainless steel market is expected to continue growing at nearly 6-7 percent per annum over the next decade, so the opportunities are undeniably present. To capitalise on these prospects, the stainless steel industry needs to focus increasingly on automation and Industry 4.0.
WCI: What are your targets for the next two years with regard to market reach, R&D, and technological advancements? AG: Our short to medium-term plans are primarily
focused on new capacity addition in a phased manner. We have been gradually expanding our product range in order to cater to new industries and geographies.

Continuus-Properzi CCR Lines – Premium Quality Copper Rod while minimizing inclusions.
Mr. Alberto Ghisetti, Sales Director, Continuus-Properzi S.p.A.
The brilliant mind of Ilario Properzi invented the Continuous Copper Rod manufacturing system back in the 1960s. Suddenly, the existing and consolidated wirebar rolling mills became obsolete while other companies strived to copy and replicate this original, successful idea. However, the reliability and the performance of the Properzi CCR lines remain unparalleled for the production of copper rod whose quality exceeds the ever more stringent demands for fine wire, ultra-fine wire, as well as magnet-wire production in the modern industry. Moreover, as the best raw materials, unfortunately, do not come at the cheapest price, the Properzi advanced technology facilitates mitigation of the adverse effects that more price appealing cathodes may sometimes have on the final rod quality or productivity.
•
Vertical melting furnace equipped with the latest high efficiency Automatic Individual–Combustion Control System to provide consistent metal flow while optimizing oxygen content and temperature of the molten metal stream.
•
Horizontal holding furnace, specially designed for slag separation and removal.
•
Fully sealed, atmosphere-controlled transfer launders equipped with slag filtration sections, resulting in cleaner molten copper with controlled, consistent oxygen level.
•
The tundish design allows fully ceramic meteringpins, thus avoiding inclusion-related wire-breaks due to erosion of the conventional steel metering-pin.
•
The original, unique Properzi casting machine design allows perfect vertical casting for optimal gas evolution thereby minimizing cast bar porosity.
•
The special Automatic Sooting Control System enables the generation of a consistent soot layer with optimal thickness on the casting mold, both wheel and belt, thereby providing a sound, flawless, crackfree cast bar, while extending the operational life of these components.
•
The compact Bar Preparation Unit prevents, by design, any damage to the cast bar, thus avoiding the generation of sub-surface oxides which are detrimental for magnet-wire manufacturing.
•
The Rolling Mill combines the two-roll configuration and the unique Properzi three-roll technology for optimal material stress distribution during the rolling process, thus enhancing the mechanical properties of the rod while granting it excellent roundness.
•
The special high-pressure Descaling System efficiently strips off any residual bar surface oxide, thereby preventing it from being rolled-in and, again, avoiding problems for magnet-wire manufacturing.
•
The rolling mill housing design minimizes rolling material oxidation along the advanced lubro-cooling (emulsion) and filtration system.
•
The design of the Cleaning and Quenching system provides a bright rod with low surface-oxides while minimizing the consumption of the reducing agents.
Continuus-Properzi lines were conceived ahead of their time and continue to provide leading-edge technology. In fact, our vast experience, consolidated over many years, from numerous lines spread around the globe, allows the Properzi lines to continually evolve and improve, thus enabling the end users to produce premium-quality wire-rod in a flawless, consistent, and repeatable manner. A state-of-the-art Properzi CCR line includes, among many others, the following features and devices that are most significant for the rod quality: •
Charging equipment designed to optimize the distribution of the cathodes and the permissible scrap inside the melting furnace, to enhance fuel efficiency, and to extend the refractory lining life

attention to details and repeatability of the operative procedures and settings. For this purpose, the highly experienced Continuus-Properzi staff supports the CCR end user in the proper operation of the line by selecting raw materials, critical components and consumables, by preparing Standard Operative Procedures and by training the supervisors and operators.
The critical process variables are conveniently stored for future statistical analysis and evaluation thus allowing the further fine-tuning of the settings, as well as maintenance planning. The automatic mode includes rod (coil) grading; as a matter of fact, the real-time evaluation of the critical production variables of each individual coil assures the rod consistency according to standard laboratory tests, therefore significantly increasing the drawing predictability factor.
Through the combination of Properzi’s advanced technology, process experience and customer support, it is possible to minimize or avoid rod defects like inclusions, porosities, rolled-in-oxides, as well as all those issues which may affect the rod performance in the most advanced multi-wire, high-speed drawing shops for fine wire or magnet wire.
As far as ultra-fine or magnet wire applications are concerned, every detail of the Properzi line is designed and manufactured with extreme precision and attention. Nonetheless, the line must operate following maximum

India and UK to Connect World’s Green Power Grids
The “Green Grids Initiative” at the COP26 climate talks held in Glasgow, Scotland, has been supported by more than 80 nations across the world. November 11, 2021 Britain and India have come up with a roadmap to enhance the connections between the world’s electricity power grids. This will accelerate the transition to greener energy seamlessly. With the linking of the grids, many parts of the world will be provided with surplus renewable power to send it to areas with deficits. For instance, countries where the sun has set could draw power from others still able to generate solar electricity. The “Green Grids Initiative” at the COP26 climate talks in Glasgow, Scotland, was backed by more than 80 countries and could set a model for how rich countries help poorer ones to reduce their emissions and meet the goal of capping global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial norms. “If the world has to move to a clean and green future, these interconnected transnational grids are going to be critical solutions,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a statement.
A high-level coalition for clean energy has been announced by India and the UK at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow.
The plan is part of a broader attempt to speed up the rollout of affordable low-carbon technology, covering more than 70 percent of the global economy. Announcing the first five goals of the plan, dubbed the “Glasgow Breakthroughs”, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson flagged targets to push clean power, zero
emissions autos, near-zero emission steel, low-carbon hydrogen and climate-resilient agriculture. In addition, the United States and the United Arab Emirates have also begun an initiative with an outlay of USD 4 billion in backing, to help farming adapt to climate change.
iiM AG introduces VisioCablePro® Bobbin Unwinder for Optimal Recirculation of Braiding Spools
VisioCablePro® bobbin unwinder has an intelligent automatic switch-off function, and safety is ensured due to the low traction on the rotating components and the indicator lights. October 29, 2021 iiM AG Measurement + Engineering has developed a solution to support sustainable production and resource conservation in the wire and cable industry. The company has introduced a new automatic bobbin

The special braiding spools are essential to use the braiding machines during the cable and wire manufacturing process. These spools also called “bobbins”, cannot be completely or evenly unwound during braiding. In effect, there is always a certain amount of wire attached to the

NEWS spool. Conventional methods such as using blades or multitools, are very time-consuming and also damage the surface of the spools. Consequently, along with the damage, there is also the risk that the fine wire will become caught or snap when the spool is used again. The use of these manual methods compromises the service life of the spool substantially. Addressing this concern, iiM AG has designed and developed the new automatic unwinder making the use of braiding spools more sustainable than before. This provides the opportunity to unwind up to 24 spools at the same time. The machine with a simple, logical design allows the operator to complete loading and setup in less than 5 minutes. Compared to the manual cutting of the residual wire, the time saved using the new method is considerable. The new VisioCablePro® bobbin unwinder has an intelligent and automatic switch-off function, which brings the machine to a halt when the wire is unwound from the spools or if

lessened because the high quality of spools remains untouched over a very long period. The risk of wire breaking during braiding is significantly minimised besides the risk of injury and the time needed by the operators.

Telecom Department Puts Forth Rules to Maintain Overhead Optical Fibre Cables
The recent amendment presents a recommendation of a one-time compensation of INR 1,000 per kilometre for the laying of overhead OFC lines. October 28, 2021 The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has amended the Indian Telegraph Right of Way (RoW) Rules (November 2016), by clearly outlining a framework regarding the laying of overhead optical fibre cables (OFCs). This development can prove extremely crucial in strengthening the broadband and boosting the required 5G infrastructure in the country. The recent amendment by the telecom department recommends a one-time compensation of INR 1,000 per kilometre for the laying of overhead OFC lines. In addition, the paperwork for the Right of Way (RoW) application has been made simpler than before.
It also states that there will be no other fee than the necessary administrative fees and restoration charges to establish the cables, maintain them, transfer or even re-position them to overground. As per DoT, the amendments will provide muchneeded ease in the RoW-related permissions and make the procedure much simpler and convenient. Earlier, the RoW Rules had covered only the underground OFCs and the mobile towers. Also, it is noteworthy that the fiberisation of telecom networks is a prerequisite in achieving universal broadband connectivity at 50Mbps to every citizen in the country. According to the views of DIPA, with the said amendment, desired clarity

India Accelerates its Digital Transformation Mission Roadmap
According to the report — Currently in India, 34 people per 100 have access to the internet in rural areas, and 1.75 lakh villages have access to optical fibre network. Under the Digital India programme, the government has taken tremendous steps to give internet access and connectivity to all areas, including rural and remote locations. October 15, 2021 India’s digital adoption has increased multi-fold, making it the secondlargest consumer internet market. The country’s expenditures on digital infrastructure will accelerate the adoption of new technologies. A longterm and comprehensive effort is required to further improve the sector. As per the report published in a leading daily — the first priority is the development of digital infrastructure, which is critical for economic growth, job creation and the provision of services. India has a large optical fibre cable network in the public and private sector that constitutes its digital highways and is progressively

forced the closing of 1.5 million schools that impacted 247 million children enrolled in elementary and secondary schools, making online classes the new normal.
In the 5G ecosystem, the number of towers is likely to grow to about two million and close to 80 percent of these would need optical fibre cable backhaul. Further, the existing fibre-optic network would require upgradation and under the BharatNet 1, would have to be augmented to a ring architecture to maintain services, despite fibre cuts.
Third, 5G technology is expected to create a cumulative economic impact of USD 1 trillion in India by 2035. Several critical policy initiatives, including that of spectrum, technology demonstration and major trials are in the pipeline. To accelerate 5G adoption, the government could embrace a ship-to-software model.
Secondly, digital transformation will significantly impact critical sectors like manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, education, etc. Covid-19
The fourth priority for strengthening digital capabilities lies in the security aspect. The government is planning to unveil a new cyber security strategy this year. The vision of the strategy
is to ensure a safe, secure, resilient, vibrant and trusted cyberspace. It will serve as a guideline to handle every aspect such as governance, national data resources, building indigenous capabilities and cyber audits. Finally, manufacturing domestically is an essential prerequisite of the digital mission. The government has announced and rolled out many incentives and schemes like NDCP, PLI, RoW, SPECS, MSIPS, etc., to boost the domestic manufacturing sector. Along with these landmark reforms, India must have a framework for comprehensive policy planning, reduce its dependence on telecom imports, and effectively use incentives and trade remedies.

deliver up to £59 billion in increased productivity every year and enable a million people to get back into employment. Recently, Openreach has executed a live trial using the double overblow installation method developed by Prysmian. This Karona installation technique enables the installation of high density optical fibre cable into pre-existing sub-ducted routes, already containing legacy cable.
The trial took place at Stonehaven in Scotland. The cable used for the trial was Sirocco HD 144f with 5.0 mm diameter, and the innovative installation method allowed to overblow 600 mts of cable in less than 4 hours, increasing the capacity of the route to 432f. This installation technique was repeated at Bury St Edmunds, where a route of 730 mts was successfully overblown in less than 4 hours.

NEWS distributed around the world. To meet this demand, submarine networks are adopting space division multiplexing (SDM) technology, where the number of independent spatial channels is increased to maximize total system capacity, reduce power consumption and optimize cost per bit. Multicore fibre is now expected to further increase the number of parallel optical fibre cores without increasing the submarine cable size and structure, enabling the second generation of submarine SDM systems. Conventional single mode fibre has a single core within an individual fibre. In contrast, each multicore fibre contains multiple cores (4 cores in
this case). This represents a four-fold enlargement in the number of spatial channels for the same amount of optical fibres and with the same fibre structure: each fibre being 250µm diameter (0.25mm) after coating. The uncoupled 4-core fibre is being deployed within the OCC SC500 series LW (Lightweight) cable, which has a 17mm outer diameter and withstands 8,000 meter water depth. This cable can accommodate up to 32 fibres. With multicore fibre, the number of cores can be increased without increasing the cable diameter, with corresponding benefits in the cost per bit of the cable system.
NEC and OCC have demonstrated that the cable’s optical transmission performance in the water fully meets the exacting requirements of modern long-haul submarine cables. They further showed that the process of cabling Sumitomo Electric’s multicore fibre has no effect on its optical characteristics, achieving excellent attenuation properties. This research was supported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), Japan, under the initiative “Research and Development of Innovative Optical Network Technology for a Novel Social Infrastructure” (JPMI00316).
NKT Reaches Milestone in Recycling Of Power Cables For NKT, the next step is to increase the recycled volumes until all production scrap goes to either internal or external recycling. October 21, 2021 As the first power cable company, NKT has successfully reused all materials from its medium- and highvoltage power cable scrap for new applications. This achievement is a breakthrough in the company’s journey towards zero waste. The recycling of power cable scrap is an important step in reducing the environmental impact of the cable industry, and NKT is now setting new standards by giving power cable scrap a second life in new products. After entering a partnership with the Norwegian recycling specialist KMT, scrap materials from the NKT production are now being transformed into flowerpots, cable drums and construction supplies. ‘’We have taken a significant step in reducing the environmental impact of our power cables as we have now developed a process that makes it possible for us to reuse our scrap by 100%. This is the result of a long-term focus on strengthening our recycling and waste handling to constantly reduce the carbon footprint of our power cables’’, says Anders Jensen, Chief Technology Officer in NKT.

NKT now practices open and closed loop recycling where waste is collected, recycled and produced into new products. Effectively, the waste does a full circle without having a negative impact on the environment by becoming a new material instead. Game-changing achievement In 2021, NKT divested its specialized recycling center to KMT and entered a partnership to take the recycling of power cable scrap to the next level by solving the challenges of recycling the mixed waste fraction consisting of 30 material fractions proven hard to recycle.
82
‘’This is a game changer in connecting a greener world through more environmentally sound processes. By finding a solution to the mixed fraction of our cable scrap reaches full recyclability as we have successfully proven that metals and cable plastics can be reused in other industrial applications’’, says Anders Jensen. NKT has a long-term ambition to have zero waste and is striving to keep all products and materials in use for as long as possible by reusing, reselling or recycling as many production materials as possible.
