HIGH-FLYING
Mr. Anil Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director, KEI Industries Ltd.
KEI Industries Embarks on a New Greenfield Project
I
ncorporated in 1968, KEI Industries Ltd. is one of the leading players in the wires and cables industry. Known for unique product ranges across the world, it is engaged in the manufacturing of high and low tension cables, control and instrumentation cables, house wires, and stainless steel wires. The company commenced Engineering Procurement & Construction (EPC) operations in 2007 and secured prestigious orders not only across the country but all over the world. WCI recently interviewed Mr. Anil Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director, KEI Industries Ltd. to know more about the new developments at KEI Industries and EPC projects.

HIGH-FLYING “We have entered into the production and execution of 400 kV cables and other cables in the extra-high-voltage category for underground transmission purposes witnessing the technological advancement in the wire and cable industry moving towards high voltage cables.” Wire & Cable India: To start with, what are the new developments at KEI Industries?
The main services offered by the EPC wing include design, engineering, supply, erection, testing, and commissioning of high voltage & extra-high voltage underground cabling projects from 33 kV to 400 kV.
Anil Gupta: KEI Industries Ltd. has been wisely investing in the right capabilities for the past 50 years, comprehensively expanding its product range through continuous innovations. Witnessing the technological advancement in the wire and cable industry moving towards high voltage cables, the company has entered into the production and execution of 400 kV cables and other cables in the extra-high-voltage category for underground transmission purposes. Additionally, KEI has been in the execution of many projects of 220 kV and 400 kV with enamelled copper conductor. All these 400 kV cables are for import substitution.
management for EHV substations, transmission lines, underground cabling, overhead lines, etc. These services are being delivered across core sectors like power, renewables, railways, refineries, petrochemicals, cement, and steel, among others.
The second development at KEI is its strong focus on house wires and retail activities. Our speciality cables have different applications in the upstream and downstream projects in the oil & gas sector. We are proficient in the manufacturing and development of specialised cables for the shipbuilding industry and have been a part of important projects of Indian defence shipyards and private shipyards around the world.
WCI: Would you like to mention some of the prestigious EPC projects in recent times? AG: KEI has worked on many prestigious projects not just in India, but all over the world. The main services offered by the EPC wing include design, engineering, supply, erection, testing, and commissioning of high voltage & extra-high voltage underground cabling projects from 33 kV to 400 kV. We recently did a 400 kV project in Chennai for Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Limited (TANTRANSCO).
Leveraging our in-house cable production, we have forward integrated into Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) services for utility projects having significant cabling requirements. Our EPC Division offers end-to-end turnkey solutions including engineering, consultancy, and project
Besides this, the company has completed 220 kV underground cabling work for PGCIL and DMRC, 132 kV underground cabling work for UPPTCL, WBSETCL, and HINDALCO, 66 kV underground cabling work for TPDDL, HVPNL, BSES Rajdhani Power Limited, Bangalore Development Authority-Bangalore, KPTCL, PSPCL, and Greater Mohali Area Development Authority and 33 kV underground cabling work for IIT Patna and KSEB. Other services include substations (AIS & GIS) on the turnkey basis up to 400 kV, conversion of overhead lines to underground lines for the complete town including HT & LT distribution system, Rural Electrification Projects under government schemes like Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) and Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (SAUBHAGYA), railway electrification including traction substations, metro, and smart city projects. WCI: What are your plans for KEI Industries? AG: We will be setting up, and adding more advanced cable products for the oil & gas sector which are presently being imported. Besides launching them in the

domestic market, the company also has plans to export these products. The future plan will be to set up a new Greenfield project in the next few years and enhance the capacity of the factories by almost double the present capacity. We will be betting upon existing products, and also more advanced products for solar and wind farms.
and the other is the installer with the equipment capacity and the ships. Until they unite, this activity will be confined to overseas companies.
We foresee a very strong future in shipbuilding, oil & gas, and the renewable segment within India as well as internationally. Also, we are doing a lot of work on the cables for the mining sector.
AG: Our present market share in the domestic segment, if we talk about the organised sector, is around 12-15 percent. We are exporting around 12 percent of our total turnover. Our wide range of cables, including EHV cables, HT cables and LT power cables, stainless steel wires, are exported to customers in over 50 countries with Germany, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East and South & West Africa as its main markets. Our highquality, customisable solutions and specialty cables at competitive prices enable us to meet the requirements of the oil and gas and other infrastructure-focused sectors in these geographies. Besides this, we also provide our international customers with EPC services.
WCI: Could you please talk about the market reach of the company?
The EPC division would remain close to 10 percent of the total sales. The major thrust of the EPC division is to do underground cabling projects so that we are able to load our factories to a certain extent for our own EPC projects. The products are manufactured by us - that is our biggest USP and it always remains to be the major leverage and strength in executing these kinds of EPC projects. WCI: What are your views on the overall wire & cable sector and the future trends?
Our aim is to grow exports to at least 15-18 percent of our sales and we would be aiming to achieve at least 50 percent of our sales through the retail network. We are already very strong in Africa, Australia, and the Middle East. Besides focusing on growing these markets, we are also penetrating the American market.
AG: I am quite bullish regarding the growth of the wire and cable sector because the economy is growing very fast. From infrastructure, power generation, transmission and distribution to oil & gas, construction, real estate, and massive housing projects, everything requires wires and cables. No sector of the economy can grow without the use of wires and cables.
The strategy is quite clear – a very strong thrust on building the brand and reaching out to every sector of the economy. For exports, we are working with a focused marketing approach by deploying focused teams in different countries.
The government is now pushing for offshore wind farm projects. Thus, a good amount of subsea cables to bring power from the offshore wind farms to the shores will be the future. The companies should look at it as a new prospect for growth. I foresee a growth of close to 12-13 percent in the overall industry for the next twenty years.
WCI: What is your perspective on the price volatility of different raw materials? AG: The volatility, we have been seeing for the last one and a half years, has been unprecedented, yet we have managed very well. Our message is very clear the cable manufacturers should focus on pushing the customers to work on variable prices and that is our number one consideration. As far as our strategy is concerned, we are very focused on synchronising our sales order book with our purchase so that we don’t lose on our commodity.
WCI: How easy is it for the Indian players to get into the subsea cable segment? AG: Subsea cable constitutes two segments – one produces the cables and the other is responsible for putting the cables into the sea. Thus, the two different entities have to unite together. One is the cable producer

opportunities for learning, growth, and professional development. The second value is quality. HFCL always goes the extra mile in inspection and testing, to ensure the products leaving our factories are defect-free and meet world-class levels of quality. This is timeconsuming and costly, but it’s the right thing to do. The third value is customer service. Every customer order is precious and is treated as such. We strive to deliver products that meet customer expectations on time, every time. We will always do whatever we can to meet customer needs, whether it’s product customisation or investment in new capacity.
Vertical integration both – backward and forward from our core offering of optical fibre cable brings certainty to our supply chain and allows us to deliver timely, value-added solutions. My joining at HFCL is a part of another key strategy, which is the expansion of HFCL’s sales, marketing, and technical teams outside India in order to grow our presence in new geographies. Our international teams will work with customers worldwide to develop targeted cable and connectivity solutions.
HFCL has a strong corporate culture where people live and act according to those values every day. We feel that if we live by those values, everything else we need to be a successful business will follow. WCI: HFCL has recently announced its plans of taking up its optical fibre capacity to 22 million fkm and optical fibre cable capacity to 34.75 million fkm. Could you please elaborate more on the capacity expansion plans?
Beyond my personal ‘home’ in the optical fibre & cable business, HFCL’s communications business unit is making significant investments in 5G, WiFi 6, and other wireless technologies. In the future, this will allow HFCL to offer integrated solutions to carriers and enterprises that extend beyond just fibre cable.
PAW: All of the investments will be made in India, with an eye to supporting both domestic and export demand. The fibre and cable market has roared back in the past year after a pause due to both deferred investments by carriers and the COVID-19 pandemic. I’ve recently seen a forecast that the worldwide fibre cable market will grow at a compound annual growth rate greater than 20 percent between now and 2025. The market is there, and we are investing to serve it.
WCI: As you hold extensive experience in the optic fibre cable (OFC) sector, in what ways do you think it will reflect in your current role in terms of identifying the technology needs of the sector? PAW: I have been lucky enough to do a little of everything in my career thus far. I’ve formulated new raw materials, designed novel indoor and FTTH cables, and worked on the evaluation and qualification of new optical fibres. I’ve worked closely with many customers, as well as with many suppliers of raw materials and manufacturing equipment. Through all of that, I have come to appreciate how much I can learn from everyone ranging from machine operators to executives. My approach will be to listen and learn from people inside and outside HFCL and incorporate those inputs into the evolving long-range technology and product strategies for HFCL’s fibre and cable business.
WCI: What strategies have you mapped to boost the business and further amplify the opportunities in the telecom sector? PAW: One strategy we will continue to pursue is vertical integration. HFCL manufactures many of the inputs for our cables, including optical fibre, fibre-reinforced polymer rods, and fibre glass yarns. We also produce connectorised cables and accessories used during optical cable deployment, including shelves, closures, termination boxes, and fixtures for aerial cables. Vertical integration both – backward and forward from our core offering of optical fibre cable brings certainty to our supply chain and allows us to deliver timely, value-added solutions to our customers.

CHANNELING GROWTH HFCL has diversified its product offering to include products that mostly cater to export markets, including jettable microcables, micromodule cables, and CPR-rated flame-retardant cables. We will continue to broaden our product line with cables, cable assemblies, and apparatus that target the export market. PAW: One of my favourite quotes is from the late American basketball coach, John Wooden, who instructed his players to “be quick, but don’t hurry.” That’s the philosophy I try to apply to product development, process development, and capacity expansion. It does HFCL’s customers no good if we are late with our solutions. It also does them no good if we provide a rushed solution that is unreliable or low-quality. Balancing the need to be quick with the need to always deliver world-class quality is a difficult challenge, but I am confident HFCL has the team to do this right.
PAW: Innovation is often a difficult process in a manufacturing environment. R&D trials, new products, and new processes can give factory general managers big headaches by disrupting standard production. With new optical cable products and processes, you generally can’t fully understand your process capability until you run 50 or 100 cables. Scrap during the production ramp is usually higher than that for established products, and problem-solving during scale-up can occupy a disproportionate share of engineering and quality resources.
HFCL has diversified its product offering to include products that mostly cater to export markets, including jettable microcables, micromodule cables, and CPR-rated flame-retardant cables. We will continue to broaden our product line with cables, cable assemblies, and apparatus that target the export market. That said, we will not lose sight of the evolving technology needs of the Indian market, especially with the coming of 5G in late 2022 and beyond. For both domestic and export applications, I anticipate that we will increase the rate at which we introduce new products, but we will not release products before they are ready to be manufactured at scale.
However, at HFCL, we understand that in order to best serve our customers, we need to meet those challenges of innovation head-on. Our goal is to provide novel solutions to customer problems that reduce our customers’ total cost of ownership. A quick pace of new innovations delivered with the highest quality is a critical part of our commitment to customer service. Automation can be a very useful tool in any manufacturing process, but it’s important to keep it in perspective. In order for automation to be effective, it has to help solve specific problems without adding unnecessary complexity to our processes. Our customers don’t buy from us because of the excellence of our automation, they buy from us because we deliver valuable optical fibre and cable solutions for their networks. We’ll invest in automation, but only when it can help us better serve the customer.
Our processes will continue to evolve to support changing technology needs of the market. We design them to be flexible and adaptable, so we can react quickly to emerging market needs. WCI: What could be the steps that could pave the way for making India a global hub for OFC production and boost the supply chain?
WCI: There’s been a surge in demand for optical fibre cables in view of the national-level projects like BharatNet and the 5G rollout which is projected to boost the OFC market. How do you relate these projections to the prospects of HFCL’s growth?
PAW: I think many of those steps have already happened, or are in progress. India certainly has the technical talent and human resources needed to be a global hub for fibre optics. Investments to grow capacity throughout the optical fibre value chain are being made by HFCL and many other companies. Indian companies need to execute on those investments and deliver the fibre and cables the wider world needs.
PAW: In other countries, the rollout of 5G has led to increases in the average fibre count of cables. We expect the same in India, and our investments in new fibre capacity will help HFCL support that when it happens. In contrast, rural broadband schemes generally lead to high demand for low fibre count cables. Our new investments in cable capacity will therefore help HFCL support BharatNet.
As you note, boosting the supply chain is a critical piece of making India a global hub for optical fibre cable. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in major disruptions in global shipping, including the supply of critical raw materials for optical fibre and cable from outside India. Over time, the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ programme should result in the increased, cost-effective production of critical raw materials within India. WCI: Since innovation is regarded to be an important cog in the wheel for any manufacturing company to grow and sustain in the long term, what is your philosophy towards incorporating automation, R&D, and innovation in your business?
www.wirecable.in

All of HFCL’s current manufacturing capacity is in India, and our recently announced expansion will be in India as well. We plan to expand our presence in export markets, but that will not be done at the expense of our support for the Indian market. India is HFCL’s home, and the Indian market is the core of our business. Full support of the Indian 5G rollout and BharatNet will be a key part of HFCL’s future growth.

endless possibilities, the onset of global warming has become a challenge for industries across the world. This has morphed into action in the form of transition to cleaner energy systems. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set the ball rolling by announcing that India plans to go carbon neutral by 2070. A shift in mobility and power generation appears to be at the fulcrum of India’s clean energy transition. The average Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) requires 83 kg of copper while a conventional vehicle consumed only 23 kg of copper. In clearer terms, India’s transition to clean energy will be a copper intensive transition. Commodity forecaster, Wood Mackenzie has pegged India’s copper demand to increase from 1 million tons per annum to 2.1 million metric tons per annum by 2030.

As the world accelerates towards cutting-edge technologies and clean energy, we, at Sterlite Copper, are exploring advanced digital technology to reduce our fuel and power consumption and also working on renewable energy segment to position copper as the metal of the future. Through our vision of “Green Copper”, we remain committed towards preserving the environment and promoting responsible production. In our quest for ESG leadership, we are implementing good green practices like switching to 100 percent clean fuels, adoption of sustainable Resilex packaging, and looking for new avenues to lower our overall carbon footprint, allowing us to truly manifest the spirit of a self-sufficient and green India. *LTPA – Lakh Ton Per Annum

WCI: Has there been any recent development at the company that you would like to share?
AP: Currently, there are various new players in the market, and in order to differentiate ourselves we need to focus on product innovation. With a view to cater to the end customer, we are focusing on offering solutions rather than a product. In line with the same, we have developed our product portfolio for services and solutions.
AP: Currently, we are focused on our diversity ratio. Though benefits that diversity and inclusion bring to an organisation such as new perspective, wider talent pool, innovative ideas, and better employee performance are known to the greater audience, the implementation still remains an ongoing challenge. We, at GWI–Tata Steel, are committed to getting our diversity ratio to 10 percent by FY25 and we are taking the necessary steps to achieve this goal.

WCI: In view of the market outlook and the trends in the steel wire segment, please chart out the recent innovations and technological upgrades you have brought to your company.
WCI: Going ahead, what are the plans of Tata Wiron with regard to achieving further growth and capabilities in light of the growing demand for steel wires? AP: Global Wires India’s long-term strategy is to have a strong presence in automotive and infrastructure segments with a wide variety of product offerings. The products are offered in domestic as well as international markets.
AP: Owing to the increasing demand and market attractiveness for sports bikes as well as an uptick in the new model launches in the >150 cc segment, Tata Wiron has identified a potential of making an entry into the >150 cc 2-wheeler segment through the wire, used for making mono suspension springs. Cashing the opportunity, Tata Wiron has launched a product – Induction Hardened and Tempered wire, in two grades, in the month of May 2021 to accelerate the new age mono suspension motorcycles in India.
In Automotive, we have two key sub-segments: • Tyres: Currently, we are offering tyre bead wire for structural integrity in radial tyres; this offering is in line with international standards and customer expectations which have a global presence. • Automotive Suspension Spring: We offer various kinds of spring wires, which are used by the two-wheelers, passenger cars, and commercial vehicles. All these vehicles are used both in domestic market as well as are exported. Hence, the spring wire requirements are in line with the international specs and requirements.
Tata Wiron IHT wire is one of its kind because, unlike HC drawn wires, strength is not imparted by drawing but by heat treatment using special micro-alloy steel drawing.
In Infrastructure, we offer Low Relaxation Pre-Stressed Concrete (LRPC) wires, which are extensively used for high span architecture. 15 percent of the volume is exported to various countries in the Middle East. The quality and specification and the service expectation are of extreme importance to serve the international market.
In line with Atmanirbhar Bharat, Tata Wiron is focusing on producing import substitutes thereby reducing dependency on the imports.

STRIDING AHEAD efforts to explore innovative ideas by which we could modify imported machines and improve the quality as well as productivity. We always explore opportunities to adopt new technology not only in manufacturing but also in support functions so that we can reduce human fatigue in the routine work of material handling. As far as quality upgradation is concerned, we always focus on customer satisfaction through quality products and our services. At Panasonic Life Solutions, we consider manpower supremely important. Apart from regular workforce training, we also conduct quality circles on the different processes to make the process better in terms of output, quality, and cost. Recently, our test lab has also received NABL accreditation
for testing as per IS 694 and IS 17048. NABL accreditation will also enhance customer confidence in the quality of the product being supplied to them.
Way Forward The building wire segment is crowded with many players from the unorganised sector. Manufacturers from the unorganised sector use inferior material with less purity and less conductivity of copper as conductor and re-processed PVC as insulation. These inferior materials pose a hazard to human lives in case of an accidental fire. Studies have shown casualties during a short-circuitinduced fire are not because of the fire but due to the toxic fumes emanated during the burning of the insulation material.
The Indian consumer does not have enough knowledge and technical awareness, especially for products such as wires. We at PLSIND, design all our products with the top priority of user safety and quality. Our wires also have the product safety “S-Mark” certification from Standardization Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) Directorate, an attached office of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India. We are the only manufacturer with a safety mark for wires in India. Our products conform to the specified requirements of appropriate safety standards published by the International Electro-technical Commission (IEC). The presence of the SAFETY Mark also indicates that internal safeguards have been incorporated to protect against fire and electrical hazards.

Our dedicated engineers are equipped with vast knowledge and high skills to work with the team members virtually. It calls for a different technique and Assomac was ‘Quick to Adopt’ which has immensely helped our customers, both with time and money.
We have also added a wire mesh plant in our product portfolio in order to cope with the high demands from our existing customers. Our Straight Line Machines (SLM) are a great success in the process technology.
We cater to the small, medium, and large segments of clients, regardless of the size and scope. For us, prioritisation is a critical concept that determines the success of the project and its timely completion.
(SLM) is a great success in the process technology and the same is used extensively. In the Post-COVID-19 period, we use the technology by remote commissioning of these plants as well as giving the customers realtime data (Industry 4.0) in which you come to know the machine performance, machine capabilities, downtime, production efficiency, and the innovative solutions for making the particular size of wires.
WCI: What are your corporate targets for FY 2022-23? How are you making your presence stronger in the domestic and global markets? NS: We are in the process of climbing up in the market with a steep ratio when compared to our previous years. We were able to get these with the hard work and dedication of our highly qualified and experienced team members as well as our main focus of keeping a balance between the latest technologies, their quick implementation, and maintaining our high quality. This is resulting in securing larger orders which will definitely help us to easily touch our goals of 2022-23 and beyond. Our reach to each segment with ‘Quantity with Quality’ is playing a major role to move further faster.
WCI: What are the challenges faced by the wire and cable industry in the areas of drawing, cutting, and making wires? As a leading supplier of wire cutting, wire drawing, and wire making machinery for India and overseas, how do you plan to address them in the years to come? NS: Any industry has its own challenges and the wire and cable industry is no exception. With the fast pace of infrastructure development taking place in India, we, as a machinery developer for the wire industry, are facing our own set of challenges. First and foremost is the inconsistent price of the inputs. The prices of inputs are rising each passing day. The delivery of inputs is a far greater challenge. In some components, the delivery period is from 6 months to one year. How can any project be planned with such a long delivery period? Lack of skilled manpower, both for us as well as for our customers, is also a big challenge.
WCI: Tell us about your product portfolio along with their key strengths and the applications where your process technology is extensively used. Are there any new additions in your product range in recent times? NS: Technological advancements in wires and cables are taking place in different application industries, backed by constant innovations. Assomac is never behind to chase these technological advancements. The wire drawing process though looks simple in concept but has different technical aspects to different metallurgy of wires. Lately, Assomac supplied many galvanising plants where we used the latest technological innovations for making GI Wires with the changed quality demands in the market. In galvanising plants, we have successfully developed high-speed plants with Nitrogen Wiping Technology.
Engineering and manufacturing are synonymous with the development of nations. We must understand that our competition is global. If, for instance, we are unable to execute a project in time, it is a nation’s loss, firstly by production and secondly, the customer may import the machine from abroad. Assomac has, therefore, adopted the approach for the development of products and solutions trying to be the best in the world. There are lots of other ideas that can move us forward and we always share these with our suppliers as well as with our customers.
We have also added a wire mesh plant to our product portfolio in order to cope with the high demands from our existing customers. Our Straight Line Machines
WCI: What is your idea for participating in CWF 2022? Do you plan to introduce something new at the exhibition? NS: It has been since long when there has been no exhibition for the wire and cable industry in the country due to the COVID-19-related restrictions. The wire and cable industry is indeed thankful to Tulip 3P Media Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi for taking this welcoming step. CWF 2022 would be a meeting ground for the wire and cable industry professionals. Assomac would showcase Straight Line Machines with a new design that would add to the performance of the machine.

ONWARDS & UPWARDS We cater to almost the entire spectrum of the wire and cable market from house wire to power cables, flexible cords, chargers to battery/welding cables, automotive, solar cables, and more with our quality products based on multiple polymers like PVC, PE, EVA, rubbers/elastomers, etc
WCI: How do you strategise to expand your reach in unexplored markets? What is your long-term vision for the growth of the company?
and the market. We invite our esteemed customers for plant visits – the feedback and the appreciation that we keep receiving from the market is the fuel that keeps the desire to excel burning!
KJ: The best marketing tool that works for us is positive word-of-mouth. It spreads our name to unchartered territories. As the market looks at us to provide critical solutions to their needs, we get a lot of ‘pull’ requirements. We have a dynamic and trained team that reaches out to customers by being in regular touch with them, both in domestic as well as export markets.
WCI: As the market leader in plasticizers & polymer compounds, please share your views on the key trends influencing the growth of the cable compound market. KJ: Like in any other market, the wire and cable market is typically segmented in India as well as in most of the developing world. There are customers and markets that offer quality products, and invest in quality infrastructure and people. Such a market is sustaining and driving the growth including the growth in the export market as well as the import-substitution market. Typical examples are automotive, power cable, mobile & communication, solar, and many other demanding applications where the dependency on imports, either directly or indirectly used to be significant.
Our products are exported to around 100 countries in the world. We invite our customers to visit our facilities and have a first-hand experience of not only the world-class manufacturing facilities but also the huge infrastructure that we have in place to cover the R&D and QA laboratories as well as application laboratories. We are also active in participating in various industry fairs as they provide a platform for meeting a large number of existing and potential customers in a short span of time. These platforms offer preliminary exposures which are then sustained by mutual interest. The synergy of having both, plasticizers & polymer compounds, in our product portfolio ensure that we cover the widest spectrum of solution for the cable & wire industry! The vision is clear – to carry on with the legacy of being a trustworthy solution provider.
The cable compound market is also witnessing a trend toward value-added, technically demanding, safer, environmental-friendly solutions, not only for newer applications but also for the current applications. A few typical examples in the wire and cable segment are solar cables, high-temperature rating automotive wires, etc. As the economy grows and the fruits reach a wider section of society, the demand for such products is growing in the domestic market. Moreover, the current geopolitical situation is forcing a lot of companies from the western world to look at India for their supply chain. This is further fuelling the growth in this technical segment of the market and we look forward to its ripple effect on the overall market. KLJ is committed, ready, and investing to be prepared for the current and emerging scenario.
WCI: With your manufacturing facilities in India, Qatar, and Thailand, please brief us on the production capabilities and infrastructure of these respective facilities. KJ: As you are aware that the KLJ Group is a diversified conglomerate with interests in polymer compounds, plasticizers, chemicals, trading, and real estate. In India, we have manufacturing capacities in multiple locations. Silvassa has two state-of-the-art plants, one for the polymer compounds and another for primary and speciality plasticizers. Jhagadia in the Bharuch district has two plants, one for chlorinated paraffins and another for benzyl chemistries. We are further expanding in both the locations where Silvassa will see a brand new compounding plant for engineering polymers and Jhagadia will see a major backward integration in our plasticizer business by way of a phthalic anhydride plant as well as a plasticizer plant. Qatar has a caustic soda plant with a forward integration to produce chlorinated paraffins as well as other products. Thailand has a plant for chlorinated paraffins. All these are state-of-the-art plants in terms of manufacturing capabilities and R&D and QA laboratories as well as application labs.
WCI: How do you ensure the production of first-rate quality compounds and consistently meet the specification requirements of the wire & cable industry? KJ: As spoken earlier, the ‘hardware’, i.e., physical infrastructure in terms of manufacturing facilities, R&D labs, and QA labs, etc., is coupled with the ‘software’, i.e., the people behind this impressive infrastructure ensuring its smooth operations as well constant upgradation. The passion of our management and professional team is the key to meeting and exceeding the customers’ expectations. KLJ, as a group and as its core belief, not only ignites this passion but also ensures that this fire and passion to excel is lit all the time. WCI: Please talk about your experience of participating at the Cable & Wire Fair and your expectations from the upcoming Cable & Wire Fair 2022.
We continue to strive to be the most reliable and technology-driven solution provider for our customers

ONWARDS & UPWARDS KJ: We find that such platforms, including Cable & Wire Fair, provide a meeting platform for all the stakeholders of the industry. Such fairs also provide an opportunity to showcase new developments thus enabling the industry at large to notice and grow in terms of technical solutions. The success and our expectations from such events are not only in terms of attendance but also in terms of the quality of visitors. We expect that the event is promoted to the right audience to have the right mix of visitors. Further, we hope that this fair is able to gain more importance in the global exhibition space in the coming time.
Our recently commissioned engineering compound plant will offer some special solutions for the cable industry.
The future roadmap is very clearly defined at KLJ that we should not only be ready for the change but lead the change. We are enabling the industry to adopt better standards and will continue to do so.
WCI: Has there been any recent development at KLJ Group that you wish to talk about? What is the future roadmap of the company going forward?
WCI: Any concluding thoughts on the interaction? KJ: We look forward to a market that is quality conscious, driven by a desire to excel, and look at longterm solutions and sustainability. We work constantly to remain a ‘Solution Provider’ for the wire & cable industry, not just another raw material supplier. We do believe that we are in the right direction and expect this to accelerate to help the country achieve what it takes to be a USD 5 trillion economy as envisaged by our policymakers.
KJ: We have many products worth mentioning. A few I would like to recall here are our portfolio for technically sensitive industry segments like solar cables, automotive wires/harness, etc. Our recently commissioned engineering compound plant will also offer some special solutions for the cable industry, though the volumes would be small. Our backward integrated plasticizer plant, due for commissioning later this year would be the most competitive plasticizer plant to serve the industry!

Ddev Plastiks: Thrust on Infrastructure Development Paves Way for Further Growth “Our corporate targets for FY 2022-23 are to stabilise the operation of both our entities post demerger and to improve our top line and bottom line by 10 – 12 percent.”
I
ncorporated in 2020, Ddev Plastiks Industries Ltd. is a quality supplier of PVC compounds. Ddev Plastiks Industries, formerly known as Kkalpana Industries (India) Ltd., has demerged to be a separate company focussing on compound manufacturing and supplying business. Ddev Plastiks Industries is pursuing various strategies including capacity and capability enhancement to make its presence much stronger in domestic and overseas markets. It is also adding new products with better aspects such as Halogen Free Flame Retardant/XL-HFFR and specialised compounds for solar/PV cables. In an interview with WCI, Mr. Ddev Surana, Director, Ddev Plastiks Industries Ltd. talks about the demerger along with objectives, technological innovations, product portfolio and its key strengths. Wire & Cable India: Give us a brief summary of the recent performance of Kkalpana Industries (India) Ltd.? Ddev Surana: Performance during the recently concluded Financial Year 2021-22 has been significantly better compared to the previous financial year. We have achieved a growth rate of more than 20 percent in FY 2021-22 vis-à-vis compared to the preceding FY. This has been possible due to overall better conditions prevailing in the market with regard to demand for cable compounds locally & globally. The push for infrastructure development has contributed significantly to our growth and the same augurs well for our future. On the product front, we have been able to stabilise the performance of our product for 66 kV and Tree Retardant XLPE. We have a good response from all our customers and we expect a good contribution to our business from these products. WCI: Could you shed some light on the developments recently taking place in your company?

NEW ENTITY DS: There are many important changes taking place some are on the corporate restructuring side and some are related to expansion and new product development.
contamination control and checking system and also improved our packing system with major atomisation to avoid human intervention thereby eliminating issues arising out of it.
The most significant development is the demerger of Kkalpana Industries (India) Ltd. w.e.f. 1 April 2022. To improve our focus on various verticals of our business, we decided to demerge Kkalpana Industries (India) Ltd. into two entities. Existing Kkalpana Industries (India) Ltd. retains upcycling and trading activities which are highly capital intensive and growing segments. These sectors require high capital outlay as well as better management attention.
WCI: Tell us about your product portfolio along with its key strengths and the applications where your compounds are extensively used. Are there any new additions in your product range in recent times? DS: For the wire & cable industry, our product range is quite extensive which covers products for voltage ratings as low as 1.1 kV to 72 kV. We have PVC compounds for low-end applications to highly specialised applications like compounds for building wires for extrusion with very high line speed. We also have products suitable for cold regions with the capability to withstand - 40 °C. In PVC we are constantly upgrading our capability for the automotive industry.
Existing manufacturing activities covering various kinds of compounds including wire and cable compounds are placed in hands of a new company emerging out of demerger, Ddev Plastiks Industries Ltd. All existing manufacturing facilities will be under Ddev Plastiks Industries Ltd. to ensure a seamless transition of the business at Ddev Plastiks Industries Ltd. The management team remains unchanged.
XLPE grades are also very widely used by the cable industry and we offer products up to 72 kV both – insulation and semiconducting. We also offer specialised grades such as TR-XLPE (Water Tree Retardant).
Apart from these changes at the corporate level, we have also gone ahead with capacity expansion for various compounds and masterbatches.
In Halogen Free Flame Retardant Grades, we offer a full range of various applications including solar cables. During the last year, we have added many new products which include insulation and semiconducting compounds for 72 kV, TR-XLPE, and FR-XLPE (meeting UL specifications).
WCI: What are your corporate targets for FY 202223? How are you making your presence stronger in the domestic and global markets? DS: Our corporate targets for FY 2022-23 are to stabilise the operation of both our entities post demerger and to improve our top line and bottom line by 10-12 percent. To achieve this, we need to make our presence much stronger in domestic and overseas markets. We are actively pursuing various strategies to achieve these objectives. Key elements are capacity and capability enhancements.
On the PVC side, we have added UV Resistant, sunlight resisting FR grade meeting UL specifications. XL-HFFR has also been successfully added to our product range in the last year. WCI: Being one of the leading manufacturers of cable compounds, what is your outlook on the wire and cable industry and your target for the coming years?
These can be achieved by capacity addition for all our products and introduction of enhanced products such as insulation grades for high voltage rating and also specialised products like TR –XLPE compounds. We are also adding new products with better aspects such as Halogen Free Flame Retardant/XL-HFFR & specialised compounds for solar/PV cables.
DS: We see a direct co-relationship between GDP growth and cable industry growth. A high focus on infrastructure building will result in high demand for cable & wire compounds. Looking at current challenges due to high commodity prices and supply chain issues, it would be difficult to give exact targets for coming years but would be appropriate to project the continued CAGR in double-digit for our industry for the coming decade.
We are also undertaking collaborative efforts with our domestic and international customers to develop enhanced products and are already at an advanced stage of negotiations. These efforts will give us a better foothold in certain export markets and will also help in improving our share with our key domestic customers.
WCI: What is your idea for participating in CWF 2022? Do you plan to introduce something new at the exhibition? DS: Our motive to participate in such an exhibition is to meet and interact with our customers and industry players. This platform gives us an opportunity to meet all stakeholders related to our industry in one place. It also gives us an opportunity to hear expert opinions during the special technical session organised by you. Product introduction is a regular process. We are not using this exhibition specifically as a launching pad for any of our new products.
WCI: Could you please highlight the key technological innovations that you have introduced in your products and operations in recent times? DS: Technological innovation is a continuous process and we are working on various aspects of our product performance. The major advancement and improvement are in the areas of our production and quality assurance facilities. We have upgraded our

he process of wire drawing, which involves reducing the cross-section of a rod or wire by passing it through a series of drawing dies/plates, has not changed much over the years. However, there has been a marked evolution in the tools used during the drawing process, elevating the technology altogether. Several

Selection of the right die with optimum parameters like entry angle, reduction angle, bearing length and exit angle are crucial to the performance of the wire drawing, along with the carbide grade. During the drawing process, a number of variables can influence the die performance—these can be broadly divided into two groups: • Independent variable • Dependent variable Independent variables are all those variables which can be governed

directly, like drawing speed, type of lubricant, geometry of the die, percentage reduction and die material. Dependent variables are those variables which cannot be governed directly, as they are caused by the process of drawing itself, like co-efficient of friction, wire temperature, variation in shear strength of the lubricant at elevated temperature, drawing stresses, plastic strain in the wire, power consumption, etc. Drawing dies are subjected to severe abrasion, compressive forces, thermal stresses, and chemical reactions. Therefore, in order to monitor the drawing process, the user has to monitor dependent variables very accurately in order to successfully reach the root cause of the problem of ’independent variables’. For example, poor shear strength of the lubricant used will result in higher wire temperature at every stage of successive draw benches. A check on wire temperature, however, will give an

TECH-TALK indication of proper lubrication and/or change in the coefficient of friction in the drawing zone. Similarly, increases in draw stresses would result in wire breakages or poor surface quality. With the right instrumentation on the draw, benches and dependent variables can be monitored reasonably accurate. Kennametal works closely with customers in designing the die with our advanced simulation support to suit the application with various profile offerings for wire drawing dies (bell type nibs, long nibs, ISO nibs, pressure dies). To boost performance parameters, Kennametal offers drawing dies in various grades, ranging from 3 percent to 15 percent binder grade for use in dry and wet drawing applications. creep rates very similar to copper building wire, resulting in similar performance. 8000 has a higher strength-toweight ratio than an equal ampacity copper wire. Since it is lighter, the pulling tension is lower. Lower pulling tension may decrease the chances of damaging the insulated wire in doing so. There is a wide range of strengths available from dead soft to mild steel, permitting a wide range of processing from wire drawing by a rolling process to provide excellent ductility. Applications include building wires, underground cables, service cables, braided cable, armouring, etc.

SIKORA FIBER TENSION 6003: Technology Faster Than Ever Before FIBER TENSION 6003 from SIKORA has a remarkable measuring rate of 10 kHz and the self-sufficient measuring system offers a robust and precise tension measurement. April 12, 2022
T
he fast, lossless transmission of data over long distances using optical fibre cables is essential for our increasingly digital and networked societies. In order to ensure optimum optical fibre quality, a variety of measurement and control technologies are already used in the drawing process. A decisive influencing factor for fibre quality is tension.
Interesting for this application is the FIBER TENSION 6003 from SIKORA with a remarkable measuring rate of 10 kHz. The self-sufficient measuring system offers a robust and precise tension measurement for validation as well as control of this eminently important parameter. The measuring principle is based on the refractive properties of glass. The FIBER TENSION 6003 is particularly attractive for manufacturers of high-end solutions where the drawing process is controlled by the tension. Thus, the FIBER TENSION 6003 is predestined for optical fibres being processed into premium optical fibre cables for which particularly high requirements and standards exist.

The FIBER TENSION 6003 measures the tension of optical fibres in the drawing tower.
TENSION 6003 can be used for both hot and cold measurements of the bare fibre, independent of production influences such as the position of the fibre in the measuring field, the production speed, and the vibration or oscillation of the fibre. Installed before or after cooling, the system generates reliable and stable measuring values and thus enables immediate control of the tension.

n January, the U.S. DOE (Department of Energy) posted the “Building a Better Grid” Initiative in the Federal Register which is designed to support massive grid expansion and modernisation. Considering the initiative anticipates the need to increase transmission capacity by 60 percent over the next 8 years (by 2030) and by as much as 300 percent by 2050, CTC Global,

supported by a number of other entities, asked Grid Strategies to consider ways Advanced Conductors can help achieve these goals and propose specific actions that should expeditiously be taken by FERC, DOE, Utility Planners, and State Regulators.
50 years old can be replaced over the next decade, then 270 GW of additional renewable generation can be connected to the grid. This effort would reduce CO2 emissions by 2.8 billion metric tons and would save consumers over USD 140 billion dollars over the decade.
While the report acknowledges the need to build many new transmission lines, it also describes the critical need to substantially increase the capacity of the existing grid. Reconductoring with Advanced Conductors such as ACCC ® Conductor is an excellent solution because ACCC can be installed quickly and cost-effectively without the need to replace or upgrade existing structures that would otherwise require more time, present more permitting challenges, and tie up crews and equipment for longer timeframes.
Some of the report’s key recommendations include:
The report concluded that if only 25 percent of the 200,000+ miles of transmission lines greater than

1. Expanding planning scenarios to consider the possibility of the additional new renewable generation assets. 2. Establishing transmission conductor efficiency standards. 3. Consider Advanced Conductors as a priority for select Power Marketing Administration (PMA) projects and for other projects which DOE supports via grants, loans, or other financing mechanisms. 4. Shift project evaluations by utilities and regulatory authorities from “least cost” to “maximum net benefits” when reviewing project options.
