The theme is based on the idea that the customers' willingness to invest is based on their plans to increase or “extend” the capacity. Furthermore, market demand is driven by factors such as the customers' requirements, the nature of the market, and so on. Thus, with the three production solution levels mentioned in the theme, we aim to fulfill the diverse needs of customers all over the world. We don't talk about too little or too much, too expensive or too low-cost. We are trying to create a good balance between these opposites. The company has been consistently investing not only in the domestic market but also internationally. Thus, we are expanding our presence mainly in the USA market, and we have been growing our services and technical team. This expansion is driven by the kind of growth opportunities which are there in the market as well as our willingness to expand our presence. We established our presence in the USA with SAMP USA in 1976 which we expect to expand. Overall, we hope to move forward to achieve further growth and capabilities!

FB: In my opinion, there have been two major trends in the industry. Firstly, there has been a sharp growth in the automotive segment, and the rise in Electric Vehicles (EVs) has also driven the growth in demand of some special-shaped and flat cables. Secondly, there has been massive growth in the power cables segment. Generally speaking, there has been an increasing demand in sophisticated power cables, especially in Europe, the USA, Africa, and a few other markets. This is driven by the rising investments in the development of the power sector infrastructure around the world.
FB: We have been regularly visiting India for business meetings and to convert the potential leads into our customers. However, our manufacturing base is going to be in Italy as before. At present, we don't have any local subsidiary for manufacturing in the country. We have a Service Engineer who is taking care of the local customers' requirements. Thus, we have been serving our customers with a range of distinct machinery and spare parts, which we have to import from Italy.

Jörg Wissdorf: At SIKORA, there are several new developments. Firstly, I would like to talk a bit about the issues which include the challenges regarding the delivery of the machines' parts, due to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the Russia-Ukraine war. Thus, we try to change our processes to still be able to serve our customers. Earlier, we had a just-in-time concept. However, now, we are going to stock more and more of the parts so that we are still able to deliver on a timely basis. Therefore, we have just rented a new warehouse to be able to stock up our machinery's parts, as well as to even partially produce, and then, to deliver the systems to our customers. Among others, we will be using artificial intelligence for preventive maintenance. For instance, to be able to predict from the behavior of machinery if something needs to be maintained.
people in our service team. And the third important part of our development is that we have established a new structure in sales. Before, our salespeople supported majorly all of our business units. Now, they are focused in particular areas, such as plastics, hose & tubes, and wires & cables. This gives us much more focus and more specific know-how in the different markets. Having this new business unit structure, we also hire additional salespeople in the world to support the growth. In general, we see great potential in our markets. There are many investment programs, which are ongoing in the United States, China, Egypt, and so on. These mentioned proposed expansions and investments will further drive the request for solutions in the wires & cables or tubes markets, which will also lead to a higher demand for systems for quality control.

Of course, we could also measure at the cold end; however, it could take up roughly around eight hours for the pipe to cool down. In this way, if the production is not done correctly, you would produce eight hours worth of scrap. Thus, by using artificial intelligence, we predict the final measuring values already at the very beginning of the process. This is helpful for all customers in terms of providing solutions that are reliable and time-efficient.

In addition, we cover the Indian market by offering two office locations, one in Delhi and one in Mumbai to be close to the customers.
Regarding the production of pipes, we use artificial intelligence to calculate the cold measuring values at the end of the line, while measuring at the beginning of the extrusion process the hot values. JW: Sustainability is very important to us. And our approach to sustainability can be defined in two ways. Firstly, the quality of products, which we produce in Germany, leads to a long life-cycle and reliability of the devices, which has a high value for customers not only in India, but all over the world. As a result, we achieve high sustainability because the devices, such as our diameter gauges have a nearly unlimited lifetime and even after years of operation, they measure as precisely as on the first day. Secondly, our measuring technology helps to increase the quality of our customer's products and simultaneously to save material as they can control, for example, the wall thickness to the minimum value. Lower consumption of plastics, which is used for the insulation, not only increases the profitability of the manufacturers. It also protects the environment and thus contributes to a sustainable production. JW: Over the last two years, we have witnessed a phenomenon which is called a “Black Swan” in theory, which happens not very often, but we have had two of these unprecedented cases – the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing war. Thus, there have been a lot of disruptive events. However, I look very positively into the future of the wire and cable industry, which is going to be driven by electrification, renewable energy, growth in residential complexes, infrastructure, and so on. All these trends will contribute to the growing demand for wires and cables. Hence, we are quite optimistic regarding the future.
JW: For all our products, the return on investment or the breakeven point is reached earlier than two years, while we also have certain cases where the ROI can be achieved even within three months. With the SIKORA equipment, our customers can save raw material on an immediate basis. Moreover, with inflation, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, and the COVID-19 pandemic, the prices for different raw materials are increasing. Thus, it becomes all the more important to have proper measurement systems for process optimisation. As I said, the thickness of insulation, to measure if you are producing the wires and cables with the specified parameters – all these considerations are fulfilled with a very early return on investment with our machinery.

With the development of the ROEX extruder series, we have been able to make significant optimisations and achieve considerable energy savings. For the same output, ROEX extruders consume roughly a quarter less energy compared to conventional extruders.
JJ: The trend towards smaller cable diameters is ongoing. In the automotive sector, in particular, increasingly complex harnesses are being used. Space and weight savings make a big difference here. In a conversation with Wire & Cable India, Mr. Giulio Properzi, CEO, Continuus-Properzi S.p.A. shares interesting insights about their technology and future plans.
Giulio Properzi: We have been in business for 75 years, and we are presenting new technology every year. Recently, we started focusing on copper recycling as the circular economy has become extremely important in today's world. My father, Ilario Properzi started developing copper casting in the 1950s. Very few people know that at that time, cathodes were not available because the copper industry was structured in a different way. The mines produced cathodes, which were used to produce wire bars and supplied to the rolling mill. So, my father started with the reverberatory furnace using scrap.

Unfortunately, several companies tried to minimize their investment by buying very low quantity furnaces and low-level casting and rolling lines. In addition, they thought that a basic – old refining technology was enough. The result was and is that they cannot produce a decent rod and make money; the reputation of fire refined rod in India is at a lower point. Instead, the copper rod produced in our plant has the characteristic of ASTM-B49 with conductivity above 100.5 and can be drawn down to 0.3 - 0.25 mm. If you use the right technology, you can refine the copper scrap and produce a high-quality copper rod that is accepted by the international market. When the companies in India will understand this aspect, we will emerge as the winner. I think this will happen soon as several companies are approaching us. The first company that agrees to invest in our technology will have the real advantage as they will be able to produce high-quality copper rods even from the low-quality copper scrap and not the other way around.
GP: We are a family-owned company; hence, the first strategy is to survive. The market is not only fluctuating but also conservative when it comes to the adoption of new technology. Hence, presenting new technology to the world is the most difficult task. Recycling copper is the trend of today because of the huge savings in energy. However, you must use the best technology. In certain parts of the world, refining technology is not up to the mark as the companies are not ready to invest money in technology.
GP: Traditionally, the recycling steps were to melt copper scrap, to produce anodes, refine the anodes in the electrolysis, get the cathodes and then melt the cathodes, cast and roll the rod. Today, we melt the scrap, refine the scrap directly and then cast and roll. So, you eliminate many steps in the process and save a lot of energy. Our capacity ranges from 10,000 – 50,000 tonnes per year up to 70,000 – 80,000 tonnes per year or even Althoughmore.you do not get the same product as virgin-grade, recycled copper can cater to 95 percent of the market needs. However, recycling must be done properly with the best available technology and original machinery and furnaces.
We already have several manufacturing plants in Europe as well as in the US, and we expect to set up one in India in the near future.

Copper can be 100 percent recovered from the majority of its end-products and returned to the production process without loss of quality during recycling. The production of secondary Cu is based on the direct melt of “new scrap” (waste resulting from either metal discarded in semis fabrication or generated during the initial manufacturing process) and/or the recycling of “old scrap” (obsolete end-of-life products or structures). Old scrap is often contaminated to a certain degree, depending mainly on its origin and the efficiency of its collection systems. Scrap metal recycling involves a number of steps such as recovery, sorting, brokering, baling, shearing, and smelting.
The production of Cu wire from 8 mm ETP rod has occurred for almost 50 years through the traditional breakdown drawing machines equipped with an inline electric annealer. During this period of time, the breakdown drawing machines have been subjected to several improvements both in mechanics and automation. However, the basic concept design still requires that the wire under process is cooled in each capstan before passing through the various dies so that the wire can then be subsequently heated and quenched by the annealing process in order to obtain soft wire. The fundamental limitations, strictly from the environmental point of view, of this consolidated process, can be summarised by saying a high consumption of electric energy, in the range of 90-110 kWh/t, is necessary for the recrystallization of the Cu wire through the annealer. With the aim of resolving the problems listed above, ContinuusProperzi has designed, patented, manufactured, and tested a revolutionary system based on the well®proven Microrolling mill as described here forth in the following Theparagraphs.concept design of Properzi's new Process is based on the use of the rolling power to increase the temperature of the wire while being rolled so that it exits at a temperature which is above the recrystallization temperature. The costly power usage for the re-heating in the annealer is totally avoided. Furthermore, the

In the following paragraphs, we will provide more information on the types of copper scrap that can be refined thanks to the Properzi Refining Know-How and the wide range of furnaces and performances we can achieve. Here we focus our attention only on the reduction of the CO-eq made possible with our2 technology in obtaining refined secondary Cu that is internationally identified as FRHC (Fire Refined High Conductivity).
studies, we obtained results similar to the ones published by Giurco and Petrie in their work titled “Strategies for reducing the carbon footprint of copper: New technologies, more recycling or demand management?” issued by Minerals Engineering. We calculated that the Carbon Footprint to obtain 1 t of Cu from an ore (0.45 percent Cu) can reach 7.65 t CO-eq; 2 however, when Cu was obtained from a mix of 25 percent of 1st quality scrap (>99 percent Cu), 37.5 percent of 2nd quality scrap (>96 percent Cu), and 37.5 percent of low-quality scrap (>94 percent Cu) the Carbon Footprint was estimated to be reduced to 0.65t CO-eq. 2
according to the required metallurgical production process. This value is consistent with what was retrieved from the various literature sources.
scrap transportation/preparation, vary from 0.25 to 0.35t CO-eq/t 2 Cu. The data indicates that the variation depends on the quality of the source material, the metallurgical process used and the quality of copper Accordingscrap.toour
The main processes used for obtaining secondary Cu are disassembly, sorting (according to different levels of purity), transportation, chopping, melting, and refining to remove the necessary quantities of impurities to reach the desired characteristics. The Properzi Refining Technology allows for to melt and refine selected Cu scrap (old, new or a mix of them) with a production ranging from 0.2 to 0.3 t CO-eq/t 2 Cu. According to the available literature, the average values for the upstream processes, mainly for Cu
According to this data the production of FRHC Cu products from secondary Cu, that can replace with almost identical characteristics Cu products starting from primary Cu, thanks to the Properzi refining technology, can reduce the Carbon Footprint by as much as 7'000 Kg CO-eq per ton of FRHC copper rod2 products processing 100 percent copper scrap (old and/or new).
In addition to the Refining Process, it is important to mention our revolutionary Self Annealing Microrolling technology that facilitates 50 percent energy savings. Even if the value of CO-eq per ton2 is much lower compared to the one indicated for the refining process, its amount is important considering the millions of tons of copper rods processed into wire.

WCI:WhatROIdoestheequipment givetothecablecompanies?
MC: The copper and aluminium prices doubled in the last two years. Thus, it's a real concern for the cable manufacturers, especially the energy cable manufacturers where they need larger cross-sections. It is critical to go in a safe manner and limit your tolerances in such a way that less copper or aluminium is used. The testing saves money enabling the cable manufacturers to generate more profit. At the same time, it is sustainable as fewer raw materials are used.

The technological packages developed by DEM are a remarkable example of the way the company pursues innovation for the benefit of the wire industry.

Profile Wire Rolling Technology: Equipment and complete lines to form flat and shaped wire, for custom and standard design profiles, in ferrous and non-ferrous materials of all grades, with final applications in the automotive, oil & gas, chemical, spring making, power and distribution, door and window hardware, house appliance, textile, watch and luxury, medical, precision and mechanical industries.
Automatic Loading and Unloading Of Spools
Inline Cleaning of Tools by No-Contact System
D
DEM stands for continuous innovation in the wire industry, with a goal of boosting uptime, yet meeting unparalleled performances.
By moving the overall stand sideways automatically with continual minimal shifting, the complete surface of rolls is going to be used equally over time, with uniform wear resulting along the full barrel of the roll. This results in the maximisation of the tool's lifetime while minimising their cost impact.
Fully Automatic Edging Stands
As the call for a brilliant surface of the end product is increasing, DEM introduced a surface polishing system that is aimed at removing dust while getting glossy finishing of wire.
Keeping rolls clean plays a key role in the rolling process. It allows getting the end product with a very clean and brilliant surface, limits the call for maintenance (removal of sticky particles from roll surface), promotes longer life of tools, and it is beneficial for final product accuracy. The nocontact cleaning system of DEM avoids any accumulation of dirt in the proximity of rolls, completely.
DEM Takes Wire Technology Further
Reinforcing Wire Stretching Technology: Equipment and complete lines for stretching of hot rolled rebar, aiming at improving its tensile properties while keeping its extraordinary ductility unaltered. Stretched material is widely used in the construction and armouring of buildings and bridges as well as in all applications where concrete reinforcing material has outstanding resistance paired with exceptional elongation capacity.
Wire Surface Polishing System
Reinforcing Wire Rolling Technology: Equipment and complete lines for cold rolling of wire rods to produce reinforcing wire with positive ribbing or negative indentation in coils and bars. Final applications are in concrete reinforcing welded mesh, lattice girders, columns, fabricated rebar and stirrups used in industrial flooring, prefabricated structures, building foundations, civil construction and infrastructures.
The system is aiming at limiting damages to spools, in most cases due to manual mishandling. Preserving spools is very important in all those applications where the same spool filled by wire is used for further pay-off operations, downstream. Moreover, the system contributes to enhancing the efficiency of operations.
The latest generation of edging stands allows accurate alignment between rolls with outstanding results as to corner radii accuracy. Additionally, all operations are made easier using memorized receipts, cutting time for threading the wire.

The current record is set at 150 cuts per minute, with a length tolerance of less than 1 mm/m (0.039 inches/ft). So, at a glance: easy operator set-up, zero set-up time for a cutto-length change, length tolerance less than 1 mm/m and 2x faster than the market average.

adjustment allows working very close to the limits set by the norms, yet producing ever-compliant material. Thanks to this precise and reliable wire weight measurement, 100 percent production of bars meeting the minimum dimensions within the permitted tolerance range (thus, with the lowest weight per meter) can now be produced with the return of investment estimated in less than a year of plant operation.

Digital Gap Control
The DEM high-speed reinforcing wire rolling lines reach a production speed of 5 m/s (1000 fpm approx.) for bars as short as 2 meters (6.5 ft) or up to 10 m/s (2000 fpm approx.)for longer bars. All the above come out with a new noiseless bar unloading design.
Quick Cassette Change
Double Coilers with Automatic Wire Transfer
Adaptive Straightness Control
The Assisted Weight Control (AWC) is the DEM's technological package for the production of wire at a lower tolerance limit to have weight in control, thanks to a continuous and automatic roll gap positioning system. Such a function is controlled by servo motors receiving input data from the Wire Weight Control and transferring them to the Digital Gap Control. Therefore, the AWC is a highly sophisticated yet reliable application made up of a reading system (WWC Wire Weight Control), a signal transduction system (DGC Digital Gap Control) and a drive system (servo motors monitored by the general Theautomation).automatic
The QCC is a really beneficial headway to cut the tooling time of cassettes. Normally a cassette changeover takes approximately 40 – 50 minutes: the QCC allows the reduction of such a time to 4 minutes only. It means that, in the case of a production program that calls for many cassette changes, a significant reduction of downtimes is achieved. Now, considering that frequent changes are increasing among all cold rolled wire producers, the QCC becomes a fundamental tool for all wire manufacturers aiming at improving the productivity of their lines.
The ASC technological package is the DEM's new breakthrough solution to produce straight bars perfectly thanks to a completely autonomous control process. At the end of the day, the wire manufacturer can experience huge advantages highlighted by a steady and consistent straight product output paired with a higher production uptime.
Furthermore, the cassettes for QCC are carried out on special changing trolleys and exchanged during line stops. This means that no external lifting devices such as overhead cranes are needed, saving this way money for their purchase. Should these devices be already present, their availability for different operations other than cassette change will increase.
Lastly, the release of the in-line cassettes, their ejection, re-

l Analysis: Explore your big data. It's easy. Do it anytime, anywhere. Find ways to improve.
l Process modeling: Keep each and every task under control.
The Direct Wire Injection is the DEM's Technological Package for the integration of a cold rolling line with a mesh welding machine. This system serves to roll and directly shoot the cross wire onto the mesh welders. This leads to a cost as well as space saving since no material manipulation is needed and no intermediate stock for cross wire is necessary. Moreover, a newly patented and state-ofthe-art OTO buffering (120 sec wire accumulation time) that is part of the system, ensures uninterrupted mesh welding machine operations, avoiding the stops which are normally required to weld the cross wire.

insertion and locking/unlocking are fully assisted with a significant reduction of risk of accidents for the operator.
Furthermore, a new patented quick locking system of the rolling rings, combined with a fast roll positioning, allows a production line changeover and set-up in less than 12 minutes, this way remarkably reducing the downtimes.
l Spare parts: Manage inventories browsing 3D drawings. DEM strongly believes in the importance of digitalisation for the machine industry of the future. For this reason, we have developed a new digital platform, to monitor the efficiency of the line and schedule maintenance.
Wire Up uses advanced analytics to help wire manufacturers achieve efficient operations. Moreover, Wire Up allows monitoring the efficiency of the line in real-time, analysing downtimes, pinpointing bottlenecks, suggesting predictive & scheduled maintenance of wear parts & components, monitoring spare parts availability, and keeping your team informed. benefits of each technology. The result of this technical effort is mostly appreciable when a DWR line is combined with a mesh welding line: even in the case of large diameter bars, the DWR is able to directly produce straight bars, with high performance and with no additional straightening operations required. Consumers need to ascertain that the electrical wiring used in their premises is capable of taking the extra load. Most electric fires occur because of overloading or poor quality of wires. New appliances, gizmos and gadgets are increasing the load on the electrical infrastructure installed when the buildings were constructed. So, the upgradation of electrical infrastructure, especially wiring is very important to prevent fire accidents.
In 2019, India recorded 10,915 deaths due to fire accidents. Most fire-related fatalities happen in residential buildings; 58 percent of such fatalities were seen in 2019. Many of these accidents arise from electrical short circuits because of the use of substandard wires.
There is a need for lead-free flameretardant wires that elevate the oxygen index which prevents the fire from spreading. They are used for internal electrification and power supply to all electrically connected equipment. Microtek wires and cables are suitable to be used in extreme weather conditions. With extensive research and development (R&D), Microtek has developed best-in-class wires and cables that can address the continuously changing requirements of Knowingcustomers.how to protect yourself and your home with proper maintenance and the use of good quality electrical wires will prevent you and your family from fire hazards, electrical shocks, and burns. Do it right and stay safe! n
Author: Mr. Subodh Gupta, Chairman & Managing Director, Microtek International Pvt. Ltd.
An electric overload occurs when too much current passes through electric wires. The wires heat and can melt, with the risk of starting a fire. Electrical shocks and fires are commonly caused by faulty wiring or equipment or inferior products.
T
Deploy Reliable Wires to Ensure Safety of your Homes
The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) data attributes nearly 40 percent of deaths at the workplace to electrical issues. According to statistics from ICA-India, among all the structures in which fire accidents were reported, about 35 percent occurred in old buildings. In the past faulty electrical wiring has resulted in incidents like a massive blaze breaking out at the famous Jhandewalan cycle market in central Delhi. Reportedly, 60 units situated in 20 shops of the market were destroyed in the fire.
he growing usage of electronic devices has perked up the demand for power in India. During the summer season especially with heatwave conditions being observed in many parts of the country, the usage of electric equipment like desert coolers and air conditioners grows exponentially. This ultimately results in electric overloads and thus, puts stress on electric wires.
July-August, 2022www.wirecable.in 68 FIRE SAFETY
The ICA-India, set up in 1998, has been propagating safe wiring practices in the building construction sector with increased awareness of power quality through the Asia Power Quality Initiative platform. Furthermore, it is known to all that AC currents travel on the smooth surface of conductors, the smoother the surface, the easier it is for the AC current to travel. When the copper wire is drawn into smaller diameters at the time of manufacturing, the edges of the drawn wire become irregular leading to more resistance for the current to flow. Super annealed process which makes the conductor super smooth therefore increasing its conductivity results in fewer heat losses as compared to any other wire. This is the kind of manufacturing facility that is deployed by companies like Microtek and others.
