The Starry Sea

Restaurant & Book Store Interior Design 2017 New York Cram School, Taipei People live in fast-paced cities, and rarely have the opportunities to slow down their pace and purely experience the atmosphere around them. These opportunities might be the sunshine in a warm afternoon, in the middle of a cold night, take a book, a glass of wine, curl up in the most comfortable corner, and immerse themselves in the time of staying away from the busy and noisy envi-

The core idea of this space is designed to provide a quiet and tranquil atmosphere, which offers a place for people to pay attention to things in front of them, enjoy the time pass by slowly, or purely empty ourselves. It becomes difficult for people to get such kind of experience in today’s rapid changing era. On the other hand, while books become obsolete by the time, it is an utter luxurious thing to read a book. Therefore, this design also intend to build an atmosphere for reading, as if an environment encourages people to appreciate and imagine the collections in a gallery or a museum.

ronment.

Tranquillity, a sensation like looking at the stars in the sky, and feeling how small we are under the stars, which would reduce our worries and desires. The design concept of the second floor is based on this idea; relative to the sky, there is the ocean at the other side, which similarly provides the feeling of deep and vast, as well as echoing with the tranquillity experience, and these constructs the core concept of the first floor. Either the imagery of both floors could be the stars above a quiet sea, or the galaxies lie across the sky. The first floor is planned to be a space for restaurants, and the second floor is a fusion space for reading.

and abundant green splash into the space; permeable vision offers a sense of layering through scattered furniture. In the meanwhile, there are some skylights in the room, sunlight could spill in to the quiet space, and people could look up to the sky at night and vividly enjoy the time changes in the space. On the other side of the building, light could also pour in from the rooftop

stairway to the space of the first floor. The patio connects both floors together whilst separate the corridors that fills with light; views of green could be seen from inside of the space to outside of the building. In addition, the terrace occupies about half of the space on the second floor; people could walk outside to have a rest on the bench at the terrace when feeling tired after reading.

The imagery of the first floor is ocean; it consists with the central bar, five sets of four-seater table, three sets of two-seater table, and two sets of two-seater barstool. With the wavy chiffon hanging from the ceiling as if the waves in the ocean, and the chandelier vaguely been seen from the chiffon, provides the changes of indistinct light and shadows, which shows as the lights been seen from the middle of the ocean.

The colour and texture of the ďŹ rst floor is also based on ocean imagery, greenish ocean blue walls are like the dark wood decks. The chiffon and sparkling

with neutral colours such as blue-grey and retro green, as well as combining with metallic element to present the sense of layering by mixing new and old feelings from the space.

Select wood furniture in order to meet the overall characteristic, however, to avoid feeling heavy from the tone, the chair legs must be skinny and light; moreover, the chair cushion should be leather or cloth material to enrich the colours in the space, which would provide a stable atmosphere.

Place two sets of barstool along the corridor next to the patio, it offers a higher view through the patio and see the overlapping trees. Whilst at night, we could see the shadows of glasses at the bar when the wall lamps lighten up the air with yellow colour; the light shadows scattered around the ocean-blue walls to show the feeling of late night at the quiet sea.

There are plants in the patio, which gives abundant green into the space; in the meanwhile, decorates the ground with white shingle as if a sandy beach, and have wooden lattice windows around it to secure privacy of the bars at each side. When lights go through the windows at night, the people who sit at each side would have different scenery.

lighting is also used on the floor, such as lamps on the low cabinets, tea tables, and desks, and the chandelier in the reading area.

Behind the book wall is a side table and the bench along with the bright glass window; the other side connects with the two-seater area in the patio. The L-shape corridor embraces abundant sunlight, and the greenish ocean blue curtain hangs on dark golden rings in the wall occasionally blocks strong sunlight. The ceiling of the patio on the second floor hangs a chandelier, and the lattice windows use frosted glass on the upper side and standard glass on the other half; these elements would present privacy to the reading seats along the Next to the low cabinets are benches with

provide a sense of excitement that embellishes the stable environment. There is a bench places along the outer wall, and the lattice window above the low wall next to the corridor side leads lights into the bar on the ďŹ rst floor; in the meanwhile, people come up to the second floor could see the view of the patio. There is a skylight above the reading area on the second floor, which gives enough sunlight during the day.

Two separate spaces gives people a harmonious life experience – One floor presents a sensation of tranquillity like in a deep ocean, and the metallic elements show embellishment as if starlight. While the other floor is divided into various small spaces, gives people a space to keep distances from others, and still have natural light and airflow in the same time. The ocean and the starry sky, provides similar kind of tranquillity and peace, yet obviously sense the time flow slowly in the spaces. .

I began this project by looking for inspirations on Dihua Street and in old-town Hsinchu where many Chinese

medicine stores are located. The interiors of the stores make one immediately forget the noise of the street as they

seem to be an island unto themselves - isolated from the outside world. These stores are full of curiosities. My curiosity and wonder

From this experience I developed the core concept of Colour Smell Taste Spicy Jar.

Sketch I sketched the project based on different forest elements. The shape of Colour Smell Taste Spicy Jar transformed from that of a mushroom stem to something more like fruit, and from that to the shape of bell peppers that

special flavor, people can recognize them without using their eyes. When they smell the flavor, naturally calling some memory or picture to their mind. Sometimes smell can easily rise up people’s memory instead of sense of sight. For example, the bitterness of medicine reminds people of getting sick. On the contrary, they remember of the satisfaction enjoying traditional Chinese medicine cuisine.

I have also made different attempts in designing the lid and spoon. I settled with designing the spoons to have the texture of tree twigs which the users can easily feel while touching and using. The lid was designed to give the user a sense of relaxing when opening a tightly sealed jar and to release the delightful scent of the spices instantly. I aim to let their daily actions.

Curve Chair Furniture Design 2014 Shih Chien University

The initial idea was to explore the concept of curves through this design. When making the draft model, I tested different materials on the types of curves they can produce. After several attempts to see the results such as

Model It was when I engaged with different surface materials and saw the slightly curved paper with folds - the metal wires lined up in various combination and undulated like a mountain - that I realized how a material of one size can vary so signiďŹ cantly.

Sound Tube can pass many things, and that includes sound.

Concept & Sketch

Elaborated from the element of tubes in the previous design project, the idea of designing a speaker came to me intuitively when associated with sound which people can easily associate a tube to make when seeing its opening. When we think of sound, we think of the sound wave. People often use the wave pattern to express sound. Inspired by the ancient Japanese myth The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter of light illuminated from the bamboo, Sound Tube is made with the combination of the elements of tube, sound waves, and light. While hearing the sound, the users are able to see the dancing sound waves through the changes of light and shadow.
