KLAY KODESH AT GUTHRIE GREEN

On Sunday, December 1, Guthrie Green will host an Interfaith Holiday Celebration in conjunction with its market and winter celebrations in Tulsa’s Arts District. Klay Kodesh, the Synagogue’s musical ensemble, will be on hand to perform a selection of Chanukah songs for the season. 4 CHALLAH BAKING

Join us for this first in a series of talks with Tulsans who have shaped our community. First up is Jeff Martin of Booksmart Tulsa and Magic City Books. Jeff will share with us the story of these two projects, along with an account of his own journey. The event will take place over a light meal and round out with Havdalah. RSVP to Sara at slevitt@bnaiemunah.com by Thursday, December 12.

There is nothing better than the sweet smell of challah filling your home on a Friday afternoon. We’ll dig our hands into this dough and connect with generation upon generation who have formed these loaves as a way to celebrate Shabbat. Join us as we prepare our dough together and walk through the steps of making this bread for yourself. Our challah baking class begins at 6:00 p.m., and there is no cost to attend. Just call our office or email Brigid Kelley at bkelley@bnaiemunah.com in order to reserve your spot.

BIBI-DIBI: BABY/TODDLER SHABBAT

Crawling? Barely walking? Not yet talking? There’s a place for you in our circle at Bibi-Dibi. It’s a monthly Shabbat gathering for babies and their families. We sing songs, play games, and share in a beautiful Shabbat dinner. We see this as a wonderful way to build your own family traditions. While no reservation is necessary for the 6:00 p.m. celebration, we do ask that you make reservations by calling or visiting our website if you plan to join us for the meal.

SISTERHOOD MAH JONGG TOURNAMENT

The Third Annual Sisterhood Mah Jongg Tournament will be held on Sunday, December 8, 2019, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Congregation B’nai Emunah. The tournament is open to anyone who enjoys playing Mah Jongg. You do not have to be a Sisterhood member to join in the fun. See the registration form in the November issue of the Messenger.

COOKING SCHOOL: THE PERFECT LATKE

Jiro may dream of sushi, but we dream of The Perfect Latke for Chanukah. Call the Synagogue or visit our website to sign up for Rabbi Kaiman’s master class in potato pancakes for the Festival of Lights. We’ll cover selecting raw materials, proper technique, and a variety of condiments for this seasonal delight on Sunday, December 15, at 10:00 a.m.

Once a month, the Synagogue community gathers in the heart of Tulsa’s Arts District to celebrate Shabbat with song. Rooted in values of inclusivity and openness, our service could serve as your final destination or a stop along the way for an evening downtown. We’ll be the ones with good snacks, hot chocolate, and warm feelings of community. It all gets started at 6:30 p.m. in the Flyloft, which is just above the Woody Guthrie Center. Look for our sign on the west side of the building.

DECEMBER [CONTINUED] 24

FROM RABBI FITZERMAN

VOLUNTEER AT THE SYNAGOGUE

MILESTONE As many of you know, we have reached another milestone. Betty Lehman, Synagogue Administrator, will soon come to the end of her official career at B’nai Emunah. She told us she would transition in her twentieth year at B’nai Emunah, but we are now at the point where it will actually begin to happen.

There are many different ways to live out our values during the winter holiday season. On December 24, the Synagogue will become a hub of volunteerism as we engage in acts of love and care for the broader community. Two projects run concurrently on that day. 24 for 24 is an effort to provide turkey dinners to as many homebound hospice families as possible. Cookiebake 2019 is a project where we deliver delicious trays of baked goods to hospital emergency rooms, waiting rooms, police and fire stations—wherever essential services are offered on Christmas Day. For more information about both these projects, please see our featured article on page 6.

I suppose that I should have known it was coming. Some time ago, Betty and her husband, Keith, moved to a home in Bristow, Oklahoma. I was against it (?!), but it didn’t matter, yet another reminder that I am not Emperor of the Jewish People. She pulls out of her driveway every day and arrives at the Synagogue ten hours later. Is it a drag? Not for Betty...but I exaggerate. Even though she and Keith may eventually move back to Tulsa, she professes to love the ride in both directions. What I should have noticed is that Bristow was a signal. There would come a day when the rides would begin to taper off.

BAR MITZVAH OF CHARLIE ROTENBERG

What’s especially challenging is imagining the years ahead. Betty has been my own partner at the Synagogue since we renovated our building in 1999-2000. I associate her with everything we’ve done to renew our building since then, and I see her hand in all things, large and small, at B’nai Emunah. Rabbi Kaiman and the rest of our professional family would say the same. If there’s a consolation here, it’s that we get to say so officially in May. Betty has been elected by our Board of Directors as our next Touro Award Honoree. For the several months immediately ahead, we will be preparing for the celebration. Betty has not finally fixed the date of her departure, but we expect that it will happen some time in the next several months. In the meantime, I hope that you will express your own gratitude for Betty’s work and mark your personal calendar for Sunday, May 11. It’s the date we’ve set aside for Touro 2020, and I look forward, with you, to a joyful, heartfelt celebration.

Yahrtzeits at the Synagogue

In addition to daily services in the afternoon, our members are welcome to attend Shabbat for Everyone. That’s the joyful monthly celebration at the Synagogue intended for all ages and levels of experience. On December 13, we’ll gather at 7:00 p.m. and announce all the yahrtzeits observed this month. Please call our Receptionist at (918) 583-7121 to let us know you’re coming so that we can double-check our records and make sure that your loved one is listed for this month. We look forward to seeing you.

SISTERS | JANET DUNDEE

IN OUR SCHOOLS

UPCOMING (CONCLUDED) SAVE THE DATE

DAY OF SERVICE

Sisterhood will be leading Shabbat services on Saturday morning, January 25. Under the leadership of Jackie Lasky and Jennifer Joels, Sisterhood Shabbat will once again provide an opportunity for women in the congregation to lead Shabbat services. If you would like to participate in the service, please contact Jackie or Jennifer.

Our tradition is rich with material that inspires us to impact our community. Ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, our students of ShulSchool and their families gathered to explore our responsibility as Jews to use our voices for change. In our fourth Family Day of Service, a morning focused on intergenerational learning on hunger, we tried something new. This year instead of packing food or making snack bags, our students heard from our partners at Hunger Free Oklahoma about how our lawmakers can fight hunger and how students can impact our lawmakers. Each student wrote our legislators, whether through a picture, "Mad-Lib" or handwritten note, and implored them to fund school food programs more robustly. Alongside their learning on advocacy and hunger, students and their families dove deeply into the Jewish text and values that guide this work.

KEEPING OUR WORLD WARM On December 8 at the Mah Jongg Tournament, participants are asked to bring new or gently used winter coats to be donated to Family and Children’s Services. Sisterhood will continue to collect coats throughout the month of December. There will be a coat rack in the Synagogue lobby. Please consider donating a bit of warmth to those in our community who need it.

IRON GATE BREAKFAST

I am always inspired by our young people, and this morning was no different. They took on this charge with seriousness and humility, compassion and eagerness. As the day ended, we sang our first Channukah song of the season. It was a timely end to a day of teaching our youngest community members their responsibility to be a bright light in a time of darkness; to be a voice for those who are hungry; and to use their power to make change.

Dr. Sarah-Anne Schuman is seeking volunteers to serve breakfast at the new Iron Gate facility. In December the date for this volunteer opportunity is Sunday, December 29, from 8:30-10:30 a.m. If you are 13 years or older, man or woman, contact Sarah-Anne at Hennschu@gmail.com. Say yes to providing this service.

Tree of Life Menorah by Emily Rosenfeld Cut from a maple tree which had already fallen, this menorah has its own unique texture and shape, with pewter details. The Gift Shop has beautiful dreidels and mezuzot made from pewter from this new line. Shop for Judaica pieces at the Sisterhood Gift Shop, your local source for beautiful as well as fun Judaica items.

RABBI DAN KAIMAN

WE NEED YOU

OPTIMISM: WE’RE ON IT

VOLUNTEERING IN DECEMBER

Want to feel good about the world? Take a look at this month’s birth announcements on page two in this edition of the Messenger. Yes, you read that correctly. Approximately a bajillion babies who are connected to our congregation have been born in the last month and a half or so. It’s baby central over here at 1719, and we are pretty excited by this population boom.

In our darkest moments, we can find joy, gladness and fulfillment in service to others. This winter season, the Synagogue will once again undertake two ambitious volunteer projects. As our brothers and sisters celebrate Christmas, there’s important work we can do to make everyone’s holiday a little sweeter. Cookiebake 2019 is one good way to accomplish this goal. We invite all members of the community to bake their favorite cookies and bars at home for this project any time during the month of December. If you begin early, please wrap your contribution securely and freeze it at home. Then make sure to drop your baked goods at the Synagogue on December 24, before 9:00 a.m.

Of course, not all of these kiddos currently live in Tulsa. But that just feels like a set of practicalities we will have to overcome along the way. What we already know is that with every new birth comes an immense amount of joy, celebration, and purpose for what community has to offer. New grandparents turn to those with experience for perspective on their new role. New parents feel their way into the world of education, family ritual, and a new social reality. And we all get the opportunity to witness the expansiveness of love.

We will tray everything for eventual distribution to hospital emergency rooms, waiting rooms, police and fire stations, the Ronald McDonald House—wherever essential services are offered on Christmas Eve and Day. In addition to baking, a team of volunteers is needed to help tray and arrange the platters. Another group will hand-deliver these trays to various locations throughout our city. Believe us when we say that people will be delighted to see you.

There are many reasons one might choose to make themselves a part of a community like ours. And new babies are the perfect justification for the project of the Synagogue. But what I hope people see when they look at our organization up close is an overflowing abundance of optimism about Judaism, Jewish living, and the future which we are always building.

In our 24 for 24 project volunteers will help prepare and deliver 24 complete turkey Christmas meals for families with loved ones in hospice care. We’re concerned about people who may not have the ability to provide a festive holiday meal for themselves. In the days leading up to the holiday, kitchen volunteers will cook a meal worthy of the season. Another team of volunteers will deliver these Christmas Eve meals to the homes of the recipient families. Finally, as part of our 24 for 24 project we invite families and individuals within the Synagogue community to underwrite the cost of these Christmas meals. Your contribution helps us all serve together.

We live in a world where it is too easy to be a pessimist. In fact, it does not take much work at all to be the one who calls out flaws and says, “it just is not possible.” But a new baby (or a bajillion new babies) demand that we ignore those voices that surround us. Instead, a baby reminds us of hope, and opportunity, and adventure beyond imagination. In new life we see potential and a bright resilient future for this precious world. It may take work to get there, but optimism should always lead the way. After all, I believe the work is worth it.

Kevin Thomas

Please note that our work in the kitchen this holiday season will also include preparing meals for the residents of Family Promise of Tulsa County. Family Promise is a partnership of faith communities across Tulsa to house and support families who are experiencing homelessness. Many congregations open their doors for one week at a time to host these families. This season, the Synagogue will do it’s part by providing meals for the entire week of December 22. Through this project there are opportunities to both cook, package, and deliver these essential meals.

We hope that the years ahead bring much satisfaction and joy to one and all. Please introduce yourself to anyone you don’t yet know in the halls of the Synagogue.

If you’d like to involve yourself in any of these projects, please call the Synagogue Office to speak with Gwenn or Nicki or email us at info@bnaiemunah.com.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS AT THE SYNAGOGUE HOW I BUILT THIS | SERIES FOR MILLENNIALS

WINTERLIGHT ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 22

If you’re an aspiring change-maker in business, the arts, government, public service, or policy, how do you get things done? Tulsa is an exceptional place to play out ambition of all kinds, but how can you accomplish your goals and leverage the available resources in an effective way?

The Synagogue will once again throw itself open to the entire community on the evening of December 22 at 6:00 p.m. Coinciding with the first night of Chanukah, the celebraton will salute the themes of liberation, religious freedom, and the triumph of light over darkness.

The Synagogue’s new series for millennials will address these issues over the next several months. Entitled How I Built This, it will bring young professionals into rich conversation with local luminaries for an inside look into how they drew on their strengths and brought their aspirations to life.

Please invite everyone you know to this festive gathering. We’ll begin with an international Chanukah FoodFest, and then slide into sparklers, music, and inflatable surprises, along with a new laser show in the Sanctuary and a rousing, community candlelighting. Think of it as a winter block party at the Synagogue for every one of our friends in Tulsa. We’re taking dreidels at the kitchen table and turning them into an event for the neighborhood and beyond.

The first session will feature cultural impressario Jeff Martin. From his base as Communications Manager at Philbrook Museum, Jeff created BookSmart Tulsa and then Magic City Books. The result is a constant stream of prominent authors, thinkers, and public intellectuals who make their way to Tulsa by the hundreds each year. If we are a mecca in the literary world with book groups, public readings, literary contests, and lively events for hipster readers, we have Jeff Martin to thank.

No reservations are necessary, but please check for details at the Synagogue website, tulsagogue.com. Would you like to help as a Winterlight volunteer? Please call Rabbi Kaiman at (918) 583-7121 or write him at rdk@bnaiemunah.com.

MLK PARADE ON JANUARY 20

Jeff will meet with us on Shabbat afternoon, December 14 beginning at 4:00 p.m. Join us for hors d’oeuvres, wine, and sweet treats, along with Jeff’s reflections on his working life. We’ll close out the experience at 6:00 p.m. with a musical, picturesque Havdalah ceremony.

Although the parade is on the January calendar, we hope that you will begin to sign up early. With a little bit of luck, we hope to double our numbers this year and turn out a massive delegation from the Synagogue. Numbers really matter in a parade, and we are looking for dozens of people to join us.

Please make contact with Sara Levitt at slevitt@bnaiemunah.com if you would like to attend. Come as you are and please feel free to reserve a spot for your friends.

The parade route is short enough to walk, even if you move a little bit more slowly than most. Need a wheelchair? We have two of them, and we'd be glad to help you from start to finish. We'll have banners pledging ourselves to social justice and understanding, along with our new Count on Me Synagogue T-shirt. But if you'd like your complimentary shirt, you need to make contact with us at the Synagogue. Just call (918) 5837121 or write Rabbi Kaiman at rdk@bnaiemunah.com.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES PARTNERSHIP Please note that we are still building out a Synagogue cadre of volunteers who can pledge two hours a week to staff the Catholic Charities Immigration Clinic. The idea is to provide administrative and office help of various kinds so that the legal staff can serve more refugees, immigrants, and asylum seekers. This is an opportunity to do the real work of social justice, beyond casual conversation and virtue signalling. If you'd like to participate, please write Rabbi Fitzerman at marboofitz@bnaiemunah.com. Our target date for kicking off this project is the first week in January. Do you have time to spare? Please spare it for this.

7

BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR Please consider a contribution to the Synagogue, the donation of appreciated assets (including stock and royalty interests), or the establishment of a philanthropic fund. You might also consider the purchase of a yahrtzeit plaque or a leaf on our Tree of Life. Another possibility is the dedication of a seat in the Sanctuary in the memory of a loved one or to honor a relative or friend. We’d be happy to help you sort through the possibilities. Please call Betty Lehman at (918) 583-7121 so that she can help connect you with good advice.
