UNVEILINGS
If you’ve been a member of the Synagogue fifty years or more and missed Milestone Shabbat, not to worry! We have beautiful artisan-crafted tzedakah boxes for all who did not attend. We will be distributing them in the course of our Centennial Year at signature events. Please call Gwenn or Caroline at the Synagogue to put your name on the list.
An unveiling in memory of the late Jeanette Altman Frieden will take place on Sunday, June 5, at 11:00 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to attend. MAZAL TOVS Marcia Paterman-Brookey recently completed her immigration process and was naturalized as a citizen of the United States. Congratulations to the entire Paterman-Brookey family on this important milestone. Congratulations to all our high school and college graduates this season. Of special note, Micah Cash and Taylor King served as the featured student speakers at their respective high schools, Booker T. Washington and Bishop Kelley. We’re all so proud of the accomplishments of our students!
ON THE COVER This detail is part of an image by Max Bond, another artist who painted the Land of Israel in the last century. Given to the Synagogue by the late Simon Levit, M.D., the painting hangs just inside the front doors of the building. Like many paintings of the era, it’s an idealized view, in this case of the Port of Haifa. The city itself is barely suggested, except for the dome of the Baha’i Temple. But the blue bay hovers like a cloud, promising both purity and connection with the rest of the world.

FACES: PORTRAIT OF A CONGREGATION
The next event on our unfolding Centennial Calendar will feature a reading from The Rabbis, a group of essays by Danny Kraft on the history of rabbinic leadership at the Synagogue. The essays are the product of Danny’s research over the past several months. A champagne reception will follow, along with a preliminary look at the pictorial archive of the congregation. Please see the article in Featured Events on page 8. We look forward to seeing you at the Synagogue for many Centennial events in the months ahead.
Sara Levitt is set to arrive this summer, and she will become our first ever Director of Jewish Life and Learning. She will be with us briefly in June and then relocate to Tulsa with her husband Matt during the first week of July. Please come by the Synagogue to say hello and join us in extending a warm and enthusiastic welcome. Sara has impressed everyone she’s met with her genuine warmth and enthusiasm. Onward and upward! 4
FROM RABBI MARC BOONE FITZERMAN
SISTERHOOD Since then, we’ve published a volume on early prayerbooks used by the congregation, and a second portfolio called The Presidents, with capsule biographies of everyone who has led the congregation since 1966, the half-century mark. We also published an edition of our Centennial Tu Be-Shevat Seder, which represents a multicultural and inclusive high point in our ceremonial life, as well as an album of Klay Kodesh music for Passover.
BIG YEAR This has been quite a year for the Family Fitzerman-Blue, with a whole lot of joy in a very short time. As many of you have heard, we now have our first grandchild (“She of the Five Last Names”), and Nina, our daughter, is engaged to be married. Our son-in-law-to-be is Daniel Sterba, a person of extraordinary kindness and refinement, who combines a head for tech and a heart for the world. We are very, very lucky that Nina and Dan found each other and are about to stand under a canopy together.
Still to come is a portfolio called The Rabbis, an album of High Holiday music now in use at B’nai Emunah, a second album of our strongest liturgical music for all moments on the calendar, four songs commissioned in honor of the congregation, a collection called Bar and Bat Mitzvah, an essay by the historian Dr. Jeffrey Gurock on the history of B’nai Emunah, and a portfolio called My Jewish Tulsa including several essays by younger and older members of the congregation. All of this will culminate at the end of 2016 with the release of Chronicles: The Second Fifty Years at B’nai Emunah. This is all in addition to the digital picture albums that we’ll be posting on our website and photographic DVDs that we hope bring you both pleasure and a sense of our history.
As they used to say in the newspapers, a fall wedding is planned. Alice and I truly wish that we could invite one and all, but reality always demands its share. At the same time, we would like to share as much of this celebration as we can. If you plan to be in town on Friday evening, July 8, we’d love to have you celebrate Shabbat with us at the Synagogue, and help us bless the bride and groom on the night of their aufruf. We’ll begin at 7:00 p.m. with a Klay Kodesh celebration and continue at 8:00 p.m. with a Champagne + Rugelach Oneg Shabbat. Please feel free to come at any point in the evening, but do us the gigantic favor of calling the Synagogue Hotline at (918) 938-3373 or checking in at the Reservations Page on the Synagogue website (tulsagogue.com). We’ll be doing a lot of the baking ourselves, and we want to make sure to get the number of rugelach close enough. When it comes to rugelach at B’nai Emunah, there is no joking around. For the record, the theme of the evening is warm good wishes instead of gifts.
Thanks to some careful budgeting, we can afford to distribute much of this material at no charge. All you have to do is call Betty Lehman at the Synagogue Office to ask that something be set aside for you. In the few cases where we have to charge for this material, we hope to keep the expense as reasonable as possible. The approach we’ve taken is to put out as much material as we can in different forms. In this case, more is more. So please take a look soon at what our many Centennial contributors have been able to accomplish. I think you’ll be pleased by what you see.
And thanks to all of you who have offered your congratulations along the way. Alice and I raised two beautiful children in this community, who carry Tulsa and its warmth, sincerity, family-feeling, intimacy, and high expectations in their hearts. We are grateful to all of you for contributing to this blessing.

Side by side with events for our Centennial Year, we’ve produced a great deal of material to memorialize our history and accomplishments. Sisterhood’s Kum Essen V is part of this body of work, but there’s a whole lot more, with additional material to come. Those who were present at Inaugural Shabbat last December may already have a copy of our portfolio on The Founders, biographical sketches and pictures of those who signed the charter of incorporation that marked the official beginning of our life as a congregation. That date, November 6, 1915, is the point of origin for all that followed. On that same evening, we distributed copies of our first album of liturgical material, including much of the music we now use on Friday evenings when Klay Kodesh leads the celebration.
www.tulsagogue.com You’ll find a useful calendar and many other helpful features, including a growing collection of liturgical music.

SISTERHOOD SHABBAT Please put this important date on your calendar: Sisterhood Shabbat, Saturday morning, January 14, 2017. We will present an exhilarating speaker and we will need women to participate in the service. Contact Carol Mandlebaum if you would like to be a part of the Shabbat service. KUM ESSEN V
Jesse Henning Schumann, the son of Sarah-Anne and John Schumann and brother of Noa, will celebrate his bar mitzvah on June 4, 2016, at Congregation Bnai Emunah.
As you are making your way through the summer months, remember that our new cookbook, Kum Essen V is an unforgettable hostess gift, wedding gift, birthday gift, or simply an “I Am Thinking About You” gift.
Jesse is in seventh grade at University School. He plays violin and tennis and enjoys math competitions, reading, and movies. Jesse is the grandson of Michael Schumann and the late Norita Wyse Berman of Cleveland, Ohio, and of Grace Weiner Wolf and Joel Henning of Chicago, Illinois.
Copies of Kum Essen V are available at the Synagogue or through Carol Mandlebaum and Janet Dundee. The price is $36 per cookbook. SISTERS ARE SO CREATIVE
Jesse is grateful to Jackie Lasky and Rabbi Dan Kaiman, for helping him prepare for his bar mitzvah.
Sharon Benjamin is organizing a fabulous program for members of Sisterhood and their friends. On Tuesday, August 30, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., we will meet at the Synagogue with Tulsa jewelry artist Karla Aguirre and create a silver and leather bracelet for ourselves or as a gift for a friend.
SYLVAN TRANSPORTATION FUND We’re glad to bring members to Synagogue events when they cannot drive themselves. Please call us at (918) 583-7121 to reserve a ride.
Karla Aguirre, jewelry artist at Colors of Etnika in the Brady District, will bring all the supplies we need and will guide us through a fun and creative evening. Please RSVP to Sharon Benjamin at sharonbenjamin8@gmail.com. The cost for this program is $25.00 per person. 6
THE SYNAGOGUE ARCHIVE
This is our first Sanctuary, part of the Synagogue built in 1916 at the corner of Ninth and Cheyenne. No part of this building remains. All you can see on the site where it once stood is a weedy parking lot just north of the Teamster’s Building on the corner. That building is now on the market; the corner will likely be entirely redeveloped. The image here was taken a day or two before the Sanctuary was demolished, and shows the rim of the Women’s Gallery in the upper left hand corner and the large architectural “scar” where the Ark was once installed. Above that on the eastern wall is space for a round stained-glass window. It’s likely that the window currently set in the vault of Memorial Hall is that same window, minus a few missing parts. This image attests to decades of neglect after the building was sold to the Odd Fellows. By the time the original Sanctuary was demolished, it had been repeatedly vandalized.

FROM RABBI KAIMAN
FEATURED EVENT
BAT MITZVAH
ONWARD FOR DANNY KRAFT
FACES ON JULY 31 On Sunday, July 31, B’nai Emunah will host its next important Centennial Year event, featuring readings from a new portfolio entitled The Rabbis. Authored by Danny Kraft, the essays will reflect on the circumstances of Jewish life in Tulsa and the role of the rabbi. There will also be a teaser selection of images from B’nai Emunah’s photographic archive.
A version of these remarks was delivered in tribute to Moreh Danny Kraft at our Shabbat for Everyone celebration on May 23, 2016. This evening, as we celebrate the growth and accomplishments of our students in our school programs and the completion of another academic year, I would like to call our attention to the contributions and achievements of Moreh Danny Kraft. As you may know, Danny Kraft will be leaving Tulsa this summer as he begins a graduate program in Jewish Studies at the Harvard Divinity School.
Please join us that evening to hear material from the portfolio and see large scale images projected in Kaiser-Miller Auditorium. The event will be followed by an hors d’oeuvres reception and adult beverages.
Danny arrived in Tulsa in the noblest of ways. As a member of Teach for America, he counted himself among a self-sacrificing, change-oriented group of recent college graduates who answered the call to reshape our public education system. He went where they told him, and the envelope read “Tulsa.” He arrived ready to make an impact, and by our shared accounts, he has held true to his promises.
No reservations are necessary and all are welcome. The event will begin at 7:00 p.m.
MANY THANKS TODAH RABAH
Not long after his arrival, Danny put himself on the radar of the Synagogue and quickly developed relationships within our community. He did exactly what we hope all our graduates feel empowered to do—he showed up, introduced himself and found a way to make our Jewish institutions a home. During his first two years in Tulsa, Danny gradually became a more and more important part of Jewish life. He answered yes to invitations, shared his ideas and his passions and thought creatively about how he could contribute to the world around him. All of this sat atop the heroic efforts required of a public school teacher in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I don’t really know how he had time to do any of it, but somehow his work and life thrived inside and outside of the classroom; in the Synagogue and in the broader Tulsa community.
Our thanks to the entire Smart Conversations committee for hosting an extremely successful community conversation entitled “Race in America” in early May. Thank you to our panelists, Rev. Ray Owens of Metropolitan Baptist Church; Felicia Collins Correia, former Chief Executive Officer of YWCA Tulsa and DVIS/Call Rape; GT Bynum, Tulsa City Councilor for District 9; and our own Micah Cash, graduating senior from Booker T. Washington High School. Over two hundred people showed up to demonstrate urgent interest in this essential issue. Thank you to all the dedicated volunteers and staff of the Seventeenth Street Deli. Our BBYO waiters and our talented kitchen community really pull this pop-up experience together. Todah to Vanessa Boushizen, Micah Cash, Nathan Levit, Yonatan Schmidt, Ilana Shushansky, Dakota Suter, Samuel Thomas, Zoe Weinstein, Allie Wenger, Tim Wood, and Miles Zeligson.
And so just over a year ago, when the Synagogue found itself in need of transitional educational leadership, it was our great pleasure to invite Danny Kraft to serve in this role. His natural gifts for Jewish learning and his experience as a professional literacy educator keenly suited him for this work. A voracious reader, writer and thinker, Danny shares a fluency in Jewish text and tradition that has been an essential model for students of all ages in our community.
Our recent Touro Banquet was driven by the dedication of a large team of volunteers, led by Molly Berger, Terry Marcum, Jolene Sanditen-Stephens, and Craig Silberg. Our able team included Steve Aberson, Dr. Jennifer Airey, Sharon Benjamin, Laurie Berman, David Blatt, Brian E. Brouse, Sharon Cash, Shaina Cash, Nancy Cohen, Ann Dunagan, Barry Friedman, Nancy Inhofe, M.D., Cheryl Myers, Bea Newman, Sara Lenet-Rotenberg, Hillary Roubein, Mindy Silberg, Kristi Tarabolous, and Phyllis Zeligson. Thanks, also, to our professional staffers who handled their responsibilities with their customary cheer and efficiency.
The past year has been marked with continued growth and flourishing success. As enrollment in our schools has continued to move on an upward trajectory, it has been Danny’s steady hands and open doors that provided stability in an ever-changing world. For that, we are eternally grateful. But more than just serving as a steady hand at the wheel, Danny has worked hard to innovate and create—to fill the gaps and (continued on the following page) 8

shape the next generation of our Jewish world. With rigorous one-on-one learning relationships, groups of students eager to enter critical and thought-provoking conversations, and new approaches to teaching fundamental skills, Danny Kraft has thrived. And it has been an honor to stand by his side. Our shared community has been the tremendous beneficiary.
Name
And so it is with great sadness and a true sense of loss that we say goodbye. While we know he will take a piece of us with him as he enters that Ivory Tower smack dab in the heart of Boston, we can’t help but also acknowledge how essential he has been. The drumbeat of his presence will beat with us as we move forward, and we hope that our own drumbeat will be a part of him wherever he goes. I am personally honored to have called Danny my teacher and my chevruta. And know that I speak on behalf of an entire community when I express our feelings of gratitude and appreciation for the work he has done and the presence he has been.
