ON THE COVER A Shavu’ot image by self-taught artist Shalom Moskovitz (Tzfat, 1896 - 1980). Note the effort to capture the chaos and brilliance of revelation at Sinai through the use of jagged, abstract shapes in the upper portion of the drawing. Moses, himself (far left), seems to draw back in astonishment at the power of Torah-giving.

THE JUNE CALENDAR OF EVENTS 2

SISTERHOOD ANNUAL MEETING

9

Randee Charney, Carol Mandlebaum and Sharon Cash, all Past Presidents of Sisterhood, will be chairing this year’s Annual Meeting. The brunch program will include the election of officers and board members and a presentation to Nancy Cohen as a Woman of Valor. The event will take place at the Synagogue on Sunday, June 2, at 9:30 a.m. Cost is $12 per person. Call (918) 407-5282.

3

Nearly five and a half years ago, a group of learners began methodically studying the Shabbat morning prayer book. Every Saturday morning, the group has met at 8:30 a.m. to explore big ideas and dig into the particulars. Under the guidance of Rabbi Kaiman, this open study group is now ready to complete this work and they will celebrate their accomplishments with a siyyum and luncheon on the first day of Shavu’ot, immediately following Yom Tov services. The whole congregation is invited. Please call or visit our website so that we can plan for your participation.

SYNAGOGUE COOKING SCHOOL | PICKLES

Pickling is not exactly a culinary tradition unique to the Jews. Lots of people pickle. But the act of preserving the harvest speaks directly to Jewish values of sustainability and conservation. There’s a reason our ancestors loved the crisp crunch of a delicately brined pickle. Discover the joys of pickling at the next session of the B’nai Emunah Cooking School. You can register for the 7:00 p.m. workshop by calling Valerie at the Synagogue office or visiting our website. The materials fee is just $18. Make contact soon; space is limited.

5

9-10

SHAVU’OT

A major festival holiday on the Jewish calendar, Shavu’ot asks us to consider how we express and exhibit our Judaism in the modern world. Reading the Book of Ruth, we reflect on the process of transformation and what it means to accept responsibility. Services each morning will begin at 9:00 a.m. Yizkor will be chanted at 10:30 a.m. on June 10.

CHALLAH BAKING

12

It’s not Shabbat without beautiful braided bread. Each month we gather on a Wednesday to mix dough so that you’ll have enough for two challahs the following Friday afternoon. Novice baker? Not to worry, we’ll walk you through it step-by-step. Please call Valerie at the Synagogue at (918) 583-7121 to reserve your space at the kneading table. Space is limited, so please call early. No cost to anyone. Workshop begins at 6:00 p.m.

7

SIDDUR STUDY SIYYUM

SISTERHOOD BOOK CLUB

Sisterhood’s Summer Book Club will be reading the unusual true story Red Notice, a book by Bill Browder. It’s a real-life tale of espionage, high finance and political intrigue about what happens when one man decides to expose corruption in the Russian government. The discussion, facilitated by Alice Blue with Dr. Bob Donaldson, will be held on Wednesday, June 12, at the Synagogue at 7:00 p.m.

14

FIRST FRIDAY SHABBAT

BIBI-DIBI

Very young children and their parents are invited to join us for another soft and cuddly Shabbat experience. A delicious, kid-friendly Shabbat dinner accompanies this program. Please visit our website or call our offices by Thursday, June 13, to reserve space for the meal. No reservations are necessary for the participatory service experience.

The Tulsa Arts District comes alive as galleries open their doors, musicians take to the streets, and the community comes together for the monthly First Friday Art Crawl. Connect with your Synagogue community as we gather in the heart of the district for a musical Shabbat service. With song, learning and reflection, we enter the weekend reminding ourselves of all that is possible. It all gets started at 6:30 p.m. in the Fly Loft, which is just above the Woody Guthrie Center. Look for the sign on the west side of the building.

21

SHABBAT FOR EVERYONE

It’s not just for you. It’s not just for me. It’s Shabbat for Everyone at CBE! Our monthly, kid-friendly Shabbat experience begins with a delicious dinner. We then move into the sounds and movements of a joyous Friday night celebration. No reservation is needed for the service at 7:00 p.m., but please call our Office or visit our website by Wednesday, June 19, to guarantee your place at the dinner table.

PLEASE DONATE YOUR PHOTOS AND EPHEMERA TO THE SYNAGOGUE ARCHIVE.

UPCOMING (CONCLUDED)

LOGO

SUMMERTIME

From time to time, we like to remind you of the contributions made by our own members to the well-being of the Synagogue. If you love our new logo on the back cover of this issue, please remember that it was created for our centennial celebration by gifted graphic artist Bhadri Verduzco. Bhadri has been part of the Synagogue family for a decade and he styles the graphics program for Philbrook Museum. Thank you, Bhadri, for your exceptional talents.

Summer is the best time to begin planning for Sisterhood events throughout the year. We will have our yearly Launch Party in August, when we ask for members to renew their Sisterhood membership and new members to sign up and get involved! Watch for that information in the August Messenger. In the meantime, if you are wanting Sisterhood information, contact Hillary Roubein, new Sisterhood President, or Randee Charney, Vice President of Membership.

THIS MAKES US PROUD

BOOK CLUB ON JUNE 12

KUDOS

Please join us for Sisterhood’s Summer Book Club, when we read the unusual true story Red Notice, a book by Bill Browder. Part John Grisham-like thriller, part business and political memoir, it is a real-life tale of espionage, high finance and political intrigue about what happens when one man decides to expose corruption in the Russian government.

Congrats to Angela Taubman on receiving a humanitarian service award from the Tulsa Arts Council. Angela just completed her stint as Event Co-Chair for the Synagogue’s Touro Celebration, and we are very proud of her multiple achievements. Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Liba Wenig Rubeinstein were the honorees at the Silver Lake Independent JCC’s recent Spring Gala. Both were saluted for their leadership in the young Jewish community of Los Angeles.

The hero is born into an academic Jewish family with communist leanings. What does he do as a young college student to rebel? He enrolls in Stanford Business School, becomes a capitalist, and moves to Russia, where he becomes the largest private investor, making billions of dollars when Russia allows private citizens to invest in companies in the late 1990s.

Dr. Elana Newman was named one of the University of Tulsa’s Outstanding Teachers for 2019. Congratulations, also, to Elana on her election as the Synagogue’s incoming president.

What starts out as an ingenious business opportunity becomes a story of government corruption, the murderous Putin regime and one man’s fight for justice. It is the story of Mr. Browder taking on overpowering odds to change the world and how, without intending to, he finds meaning in his life.

JULY HIGHLIGHTS

Our discussion, facilitated by Alice Blue with Dr. Bob Donaldson, will be held on Wednesday, June 12, at the Synagogue at 7:00 p.m. Order a copy and start reading today! VOLUNTEER FOR IRON GATE Sarah-Anne Schumann is calling all volunteers, men and women over the age of 13, to join her on the fourth Sunday of each month to serve breakfast to the guests at Iron Gate.

FROM RABBI DANIEL SHALOM KAIMAN To register for the Summer Learning Series, please call the Synagogue office or visit our website. There is no charge for members of the congregation. The non-member charge is $18.

REPRODUCTIVE FREEDOM One of the things I like best about living in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is the respectful and cordial nature with which people treat one another. It’s how we talk to each other while standing in line at the grocery store. I’m thinking about the gentle ways my neighbors ask about Jewish holidays or the various things that are happening in my life. In my estimation, it is a sort of Midwestern sense of charm, sprinkled with Southern decorum. It seems to me that Oklahoma has something to teach the rest of the country, and it’s grounded in the way we respect one another.

TODAH RABAH MANY THANKS So much of the work of our Synagogue rests in the capable hands of volunteer leaders from across our community. Many thanks to all of who step forward to participate in many different aspects of our communal life. We are especially grateful to all of our 2019 Touro volunteers:

I am reminded of all of this in light of recent legislation passed in state legislatures across the south. I am talking about the so-called Personhood Acts and Life at Conception Acts that have been enacted in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Ohio. These laws stand in distinction to the religious values and the normative understanding of relevant biblical and rabbinic sources that have been affirmed by my colleagues in the Rabbinical Assembly.

Steve Aberson Emily Bolusky Brian Brouse Nancy Cohen Randee Charney Sally A. Donaldson Barbara Eisen Terry Marcum Dr. Elana Newman Jolene Sanditen Dr. John Schumann Craig R. Silberg Angela Taubman

Along with voices from across our part of the Jewish world, I support full access for all women to the entire spectrum of reproductive healthcare, and I oppose all efforts by government, private entities, or individuals to limit such access or to require unnecessary procedures. Additionally, I oppose the “personhood” legislation on federal and state levels that would confer legal rights under the law to a fetus or an embryo.

Thanks to these fine people, we had a meaningful event and a lovely dinner, and we reached our Spring 2019 fundraising goal. Congratulations once again to Eva Unterman for representing our community in such a powerful and positive way.

I understand the recent legislative efforts to be an assault on religious freedom, and I fear for the physical and psychological harm that may be the result of such actions. None of this fits into the respectful way I would expect us as Oklahomans to treat one another.

MAKE SUMMER PICKLES WITH US ON JUNE 3. SEE PAGE 3

All of this being said, I understand that these questions can be complicated and multilayered. Voices from other parts of the religious world read texts with different understandings than our own, and there is great risk for harmful debate on this subject. To examine these issues in more depth, I will be teaching a course entitled Jewish Perspectives on Reproductive Freedom as part of our Summer Learning Series here at the Synagogue. For four consecutive Mondays in July, beginning on July 8, at 7:00 p.m., we will explore source texts, look more closely at the current debate, and learn about where these conversations are happening in our state. I hope that we will all be strengthened by our learning and our ongoing ability to respect one another.

We'RE DELIGHTED TO WELCOME

KAREN KIELY ALIXANDRA LIIV & MONTE CAPLAN into the congregational family. MAY ALL OF US GO TOGETHER FROM Strength to Strength!

FROM RABBI FITZERMAN

LOOKING BACK

ONWARD AND UPWARD IN THE GARDEN

TOURO TRIBUTE

After a long hiatus, I have returned to the garden. Not a metaphorical “garden,” but the one behind the house. For a while I was gardening as if my life depended on it. Then came the big empty interval now ending. Some of it had to do with busy-ness; I couldn’t seem to clear the space for planting. I would buy a carload of plants, park them in the driveway, and by the time I got to them, they were stressed beyond saving. Trust me when I say that there is nothing more dispiriting than a carload of dead and dying plants in the driveway.

As our 2019 Touro honoree, Eva Unterman recieved many tributes and notes of congratulations. Here’s a sample from Dr. Joseph Bradley, emeritus professor from The University of Tulsa. Dear Eva! I remember one moment in the story that you often tell: for a long time after the war, you did not want to talk about your experiences. Only later, when a Tulsa teacher asked you to come to speak to a class, did you realize that you had a story to tell, and a story that was important to tell.

The first thing that changed was the size of my purchases. Why it took me so long is hard to figure, but I now buy less and plant it immediately. Genius! Laugh if you want, but this turned out to be a tidy solution. My schedule is the same, but there is no more sadness, at least where the plants in my garden are concerned. The new three-season lilac seems to be flourishing, and I like the look of the paired perovskias.

In the story I tell about my teaching career, for a long time after I came to Tulsa I was focused on Russian history and paid little attention to Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. Only later, when the opportunity presented itself, did I realize that I could teach the topic of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. A lot of my commitment to these new subjects I owe to you. You invited me to join the Holocaust Council and encouraged me to be a docent at the Museum. Your intellectual curiosity is a model of lifelong learning and a great love of learning and books and ideas. But most meaningful were your visits to my classes. Over the years, I brought many guests to talk in my classes and meet students. But the reaction of my students to your visits was indeed something special. They came up to you after class and told you how much your story meant to them, how much they admired your humanity after childhood trauma.

The other thing I’ve noticed is that my rules gave way to enthusiasm. I started up this year with a plan to go big and long-term. No more annuals or perennials under two feet tall. I wanted to build a garden that would be less demanding overall and allow me to do more standing around. Genius! But once I got to the nursery, I went crazy with possibility. Zinnia seeds! Dahlias! Shishito peppers! Some of these will conk because I have failed to tend them. And they won’t last forever like my new ornamental grasses. But it turns out that they give me the same pleasure as before. Enthusiasm beats rules pretty much every time.

I now listen to other stories of childhood trauma. You have inspired me to be a volunteer at United States Holocaust Memorial and Museum. I write summaries of taped interviews of Russian and Ukrainian survivors and even bystanders. Every time I listen to one of their stories, I think of you.

My garden will never be the Eden I imagine, and that probably applies to the rest of my life. But even in the midst of our perennial struggles, there’s a new layer of pleasure and satisfaction in my life. I’ll let you know if I actually get zinnias this summer. All I can say is wish me luck.

I am sorry I can’t join this celebration tonight, but I congratulate you from afar. The Tulsa community is richer for your energy, dedication, and spirit.

FROM PRESIDENT SALLY A. DONALDSON SUMMING UP

we know that you will continue to be a strong and steady voice at the Synagogue.

Outgoing president Sally Donaldson spoke beautifully on the evening of our Touro Tribute Celebration. Here are her remarks for those who could not hear them in person.

I would also like to take a moment to salute our bookkeeper of 20 years, Didi Ralph. Didi will be retiring from her congregational duties this summer but she promises to remain a part of our extended family. We thank you, Didi, for all of your hard work and all of those special qualities you brought with you every day to better serve our congregants. We wish you all the best in your retirement.

As many of you know, our Touro Banquet is a tribute to members of the congregation who have distinguished themselves for their Jewish commitments and also contributed to the well-being of our community at large. You will hear many words about Eva Unterman’s accomplishments this evening, but I want to add my own salute to those of others. Eva participated in our McClure mentoring program for several years and I had the opportunity during that time to witness her gentle soul, caring heart and unbounded empathy for her mentee, Amy, move that young girl forward to a place where she showed self-confidence and joy. It was truly a privilege for me to share the space with them. For so many reasons, we are proud to be known as Eva’s congregation and I wish her long life and good health. Thank you, Eva!

Finally, I want to say how much the experience of service means to me. I’ve been involved with many organizations in Tulsa, and served in many capacities at the Synagogue. As you may recall, I was interim Education Director, and then Project Director for our McClure Elementary School Mentoring Program at the very beginning. But serving as president brought me special pleasure and offered me the opportunity to work once again with our extraordinary professional staff of Rabbi Fitzerman, Rabbi Kaiman, Sara Levitt, Betty Lehman, Didi Ralph, and Valerie Henderson. It also gave me the chance to be part of something so deeply meaningful.

Our banquet is also an opportunity to thank board members for their service and to welcome our incoming slate for the coming years. Thanks to the hard work of our Nominating Committee, the names of our nominees were on your ballots this evening, and I am deeply grateful for the trust and support of our congregation. Elected as officers are Dr. Elana Newman (President); Dr. John Schumann (Vice President); Ross Heyman (Vice President of Finance/Treasurer); and Nancy Cohen (Secretary).

Part of this was the issue of transition. Before closing my presidency, I wanted to help ensure that we had a plan in place that would guard against disruption, sustain our gains, and lay the groundwork for our future. I believe that our Board has accomplished just that. As many of you have heard, we have just concluded conversations with Rabbis Fitzerman and Kaiman. Because of the working relationship between them and the love and respect each feels for each other, both agreed to extend their contracts. Rabbi Fitzerman will be with us until his next milestone birthday in 2024, and Rabbi Kaiman’s next contract takes him to 2025. They will be rebalancing the portfolio of responsibility between them so that Rabbi Fitzerman has time for personal project work and Rabbi Kaiman can continue to expand his rabbinate. We think that this is an ideal arrangement that serves the purpose of both stability and change. Would you join me, please, in blessing this new agreement and signaling that this is an agreeable plan?

Board members elected for a new two-year term are Emily Melton Bolusky, Sharon Cash, Nancy Cohen, Barbara Eisen, Jake Lerner, Terry Marcum, Dr. Elana Newman, Debby Raskin, Angela Taubman, and Ricki Wimmer. If you are here this evening, please rise to accept our congratulations. And now, would the remaining members of the Board who will be completing the second year of their two-year term please stand. Let’s salute all of these good people with a round of applause. We look forward to a strong and productive year of leadership. Thank you! Let me publicly offer my gratitude to those who have given so much to the congregation since their first election to leadership. That includes, most especially, Dr. Leor Roubein, who will be rotating off our Board this year. It was during Leor’s term that we celebrated our first Touro honoree, Brian Brouse. Leor’s leadership and Jewish commitment have been essential to our success. Unfortunately he is unable to be with us tonight, but would you still join me in thanking Leor for his service.

Please let me close by saying that we have more than a hundred years behind us and I hope, with your help, a hundred years and more ahead. We are part of a most fortunate Jewish community, operating at a very high level of thought and care. Thanks for allowing me to be part of all of this, along with your trust, your support, and your enthusiasm. I hope to continue to contribute to this congregation with a whole heart and good sense, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity you gave me. Thank you and mazal tov to us all!

A special thank you is also extended to Dr. Jan Finer, whose leadership as Sisterhood president for these past two years has brought with it creative new programming and initiatives. Thank you, Jan, for your service to our congregation. Although your term as Sisterhood president will be ending next month,

FROM THE SYNAGOGUE ARCHIVE

Thanks so much to the many people who responded to our questions. Shirley Dormont called to say that the third child from the left is Steven Dormnont. The date is 1969, and all of these children are four years old. Elana Grissom says that the little girl furthest to the right is her sister, Mariah Dickson. Directly to her left at the end of the line is Kenny Watt. Although the photograph is not dated, the rompers and the saddle shoes suggest that it’s the 1950s or early 1960s. The tile floor identifies this as a scene in the Nadel Education Building. Can anyone out there help us identify the children in the scene?

Many generations have already done so, and we have remaining spaces waiting for you. The cost is quite reasonable. Please call Betty Lehman at (918) 583-7121 for details.
