With open doors and open arms, please celebrate Shabbat with your congregational family. This month we’ll celebrate the end of another successful school year at B’nai Emunah with gifts, certificates, and accolades for teachers and students. A highlight of the service will be a community blessing (aufruf) for the Massil and Rajadurai families, whose children, Sasha and Karthik, will soon be married. An optional communal meal accompanies this service so that your Shabbat can be truly restful and restorative. No reservation is needed for the service at 7:00 p.m. But please call or visit our website to make your 6:00 p.m. meal reservations.
BIBI-DIBI: SHABBAT FOR ITSY BITSIES
Very young children and their parents are invited to join us for another soft and cuddly Shabbat experience. It all gets started at 6:00 p.m. Parachutes, rattles, and toys sit at the center of our circle while parents and kids share in the blessings of peaceful Shabbat. ON POWAY Once again, we find ourselves in mourning. Once again, the sacred act of prayer has been violated. Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Squirrel Hill are barely memories, and yet again we confront the face of xenophobia and extremism. Our hearts are heavy as we send comfort to the mourners, victims, and survivors of last month’s attack on a synagogue in Poway, California. And we again face the unbearable reality of considering these questions without end.
Sanctuaries for prayer must remain holy spaces, and we continue to work for a world that makes space for all. Our regular programming and services will continue as scheduled. We will keep striving for a world renewed. Please join us in sending condolences to the Jewish community of Greater San Diego, and to every community that has experienced violence of any kind. Let justice shine forth, as the memory of the righteous continues to be for a blessing.
At the Synagogue, we are comforted by demonstrations of care from neighbors and friends. We take great strength in counting ourselves as partners with diverse voices across Tulsa’s faith, non-profit, and social service community. Events like Poway remind us that there is still much work to be done to make this world a better place. We continue to expect that political and communal leaders will take bold actions to ensure safer communities grounded in the American ideals of diversity and inclusion. Violence like this should never happen. And we stand in solidarity with all marginalized communities who face these threats of hate and acts of extremism.
GOING FORTH WITH BLESSINGS Each class of seniors is a source of mixed feelings for both of us. We rejoice in the achievements and maturity of our young people and wonder when we will see them again in the hallways of the Synagogue. Fortunately, it all works out in the end: they grow up and we somehow manage to keep our ties alive. This year’s group is especially dear, and we commend Maia Anderson, Hannah Dow, Jaxon King, Jarrod Simon, Maayan Stafford, Brandon Sweet, Lucia Anne VanHanken, and Allie Wenger on completing their high school careers in Tulsa. We will miss you greatly, but hope to keep the flame alive!

Magic City Books, in partnership with the Bob Dylan Center and the Synagogue, is proud to welcome Rachel Kushner to Tulsa on Thursday May 16. This evening of conversation will take place at The Synagogue | Congregation B’nai Emunah.
The event will begin with a sweet and colorful Havdalah ceremony to mark the close of the Sabbath at 8:30 p.m. Shortly after 9:00 p.m., the congregation is invited to attend a dessert reception in Lior’s honor.

Dr. Eduardo Faingold, TU Professor of Spanish and linguistics, will speak about the language rights of immigrants to mother tongue education at the meeting of the Group on Language at the United Nations in New York City, May 9-10. This is a honor awarded to selected key UN personnel and delegates, and language researchers and practitioners. The Tulsa Association of Women in Communications has named Mimi Tarrasch, chief officer for Family and Children’s Services’ Women in Recovery, as one of its 2019 honorees. Over 46 years, the group has honored 150 Tulsa women for their achievements. Women in Recovery is a program that offers an alternative to incarceration for women facing longterm prison sentences.

SISTERHOOD SHABBAT ON APRIL 6
Members of the congregation are invited to participate in two events that constitute the Annual Meeting of the Synagogue. First up is the approval of the budget on Tuesday, May 14, at 7:00 p.m. This discussion will be the first order of business at a special session of our monthly Board meeting. All are invited.
On the morning of Saturday, April 6, approximately fifty women came together to participate in the annual Sisterhood Shabbat service. All parts of the service were led by these women, including Hallel, the reading of Torah, aliyot, lifting the Torah, the D’var Torah, Haftorah and concluding prayers. This Shabbat service was a bit more challenging than in previous years. It was both Rosh Chodesh and Parashat ha-Chodesh, requiring Sisterhood members to learn additional texts. There were three Torahs from which to read, which also meant three Torahs which needed to be lifted and dressed!
Our election of officers and board members for the new Synagogue year will take place on the evening of the Touro celebration on Sunday, May 19. The Nominating Committee has placed the following names on the ballot: Dr. Elana Newman (President); Dr. John Schumann (Vice President); Ross Heyman (Vice President of Finance/Treasurer); and Nancy Cohen (Secretary).
Sisterhood thanks Matt Levitt, who taught a number of women the technique of lifting the Torah. What a remarkable experience it was for the nine women who joined Matt in learning this procedure.
Board members nominated for a new two-year term are Emily Melton Bolusky, Sharon Cash, Nancy Cohen, Barbara Eisen, Jake Lerner, Terry Marcum, Dr. Elana Newman, Debby Raskin, Angela Taubman, and Ricki Wimmer.
Many thanks to Hillary Roubein, Jennifer Joels, Jodi Finer Zalk and Jackie Lasky who organized and recruited women for this Shabbat service. Thanks to Nancy Wolov for her D’var Torah and our caterer for the preparation of the kiddush following services. Sisterhood is always grateful to Betty Lehman, Rabbi Fitzerman, and Rabbi Kaiman for their support of this annual Shabbat service. Members of the Synagogue staff are also appreciated for their efforts on behalf of Sisterhood.
Remaining Board members will serve out the second year of their two-year terms of office. Honorary Board member Dr. Stephen Adelson will continue to serve. In addition, our three most recent Past Presidents will also remain on the Board. They are Sally Donaldson, Craig Silberg, and Jolene Sanditen.

The joy of this Shabbat was experienced by all who were present, and Sisterhood looks forward to lending our abilities to future Shabbat programs. Thanks so much to the many people who responded to our questions. Shirley Dormont called to say that the third child from the left is Steven Dormnont. The date is 1969, and all of these children are four years old. Elana Grissom says that the little girl furthest to the right is her sister, Mariah Dickson. Directly to her left at the end of the line is Kenny Watt. Although the photograph is not dated, the rompers and the saddle shoes suggest that it’s the 1950s or early 1960s. The tile floor identifies this as a scene in the Nadel Education Building. Can anyone out there help us identify the children in the scene?
