If you know me, you know I am constantly breaking into song. It can be a well-known song or one I make up on the spot from something someone said. This skill is handy when leading the TPAC Youth Choir. The kids find my ability to give instructions and feedback via a melody quite funny, and I love hearing them laugh at that! In our rehearsals and performances, radical joy is found on both sides. The choir members are seen. They are heard. They are accepted.
The TPAC started accepting submissions for the choir in April of 2022 and has since started rehearsing every other Monday. We now have around 35 kiddos, many of whom got to perform at the David Phelps concert, at Mother Road Market as part of their holiday festivities, and most recently at the Faith Prince and Jason Graae cabaret.
While the concept of a youth choir is not foreign, this one was intentionally created to NOT be a replacement for a school program or private study. It is designed to be a supplement to their current programs and to aid in the development of critical thinkers, musicians, and leaders.
The best part of this group is that it isn’t exclusive. There are members from multiple school districts, a few homeschool kids, and students who a end EPIC Charter Schools’ virtual academy. My point is this: the creation of art is everyone’s right and creating music together IS the creation of art!
