from the Publisher Congratulations to our winners in the Best in the World contest. We have covered many companies over the years, but we wanted to know what you thought. Who has the best hamburger? Who makes the best cup of coffee? This planned annual event will allow our readers to know what others think and hopefully will make you aware of new places to try. We will be modifying our category list from time to time to make sure we are reflective of what our audience would like to see, so please let us know what you would like us to add. You will notice that the winning businesses will have distinct Best in the World awards, letting you know when you enter that they have been voted one of Tulsa’s best this past year. We hope you try these businesses and will let us know what you think. Again, congrats to all and let’s have fun with this.

But what sets Tulsa International Mayfest apart is its size and variety, which has helped it to grow over the festival’s more than 40-year history. A Tulsa favorite and packed each day during the mid-May fest, it’s no surprise it was voted the best festival in town. “Mayfest is unique because it’s an art festival that has something for everyone to enjoy,” said Heather Pingry, executive director of Tulsa International Mayfest. “You can purchase fine art or a corn dog, or both.” Four stages throughout the

n the span of five years, the Brady Arts District has been transformed from a sleepy artistcentric district with about as many empty warehouses as people. Those days are now gone, with the area north of the railroad tracks in downtown Tulsa bustling with activity nearly every night. “It means so much and I think the main reason is when you look at the district, you don’t see a single nation-
al chain other than Spaghetti Warehouse in the district,” said Bob Fleischman, president of the Brady Arts District Business Association. “It’s all about individual dreams. It’s always been the Bohemians that have been here.” With daily programming at Guthrie Green park, several museums highlighting local work, pottery, glass-blowing, recording studios, restaurants and more, the Brady Arts District represents some of the best Tulsa has to offer

he old, wooden, spring-loaded dance floor is one of the many charms of Cain’s Ballroom. If that floor could talk... Not only has that floor itself seen countless couples dance slowly in circles and metal fans mosh for hours, but the red neon star and mirror ball are a big part of what gives Cain’s Ballroom its distinct charm. “Winning for having the best dance floor is definitely an honor,” said Chad Rodgers, general manager of Cain’s Ballroom. “This floor has been danced on by thousands of people for many, many years, and we hope to keep the dance floor a-rockin’ for many more years. “It must be because of the springs!” What helps make Cain’s dance floor so popular is the variety of music on stage. No doubt anyone could find someone to see on that stage, and dance along on that storied floor.

ulsa has come a long way from the steakand-potato town it was 40 years ago. Fine steakhouses still are here, but now there is so much more. The ethnic influences, particularly among Mexican and southeast Asian restaurants, has been undeniable, largely due to the immigration of Vietnamese refugees in the 1970s and more recently the growth of our Hispanic population. Perhaps the most startling difference has been the number of native Tulsans who have gone off the culinary school and returned to open some of the most exceptional restaurants in our city. Today, Tulsa offers a true smorgasbord of flavors and dining options, no matter what one’s tastes are in food.

Brookside by Day, or BBD as most folks call it, has been a fixture in Brookside since 1991. It steadily built a regular crowd with solid diner fare, a friendly atmosphere and a young, eclectic waitstaff, many of whom have stayed on through their adult years. It’s always busy for breakfast and lunch, especially on the weekends, and a new patio area allows for some leisurely people-watching along Peoria Avenue. Waffles with strawberries, bananas and hot syrup is a chalkboard special almost every day. “It’s great to know that people think we have the best breakfast,” owner Kyle Phillips said. “I don’t know if it’s because we have been doing the same thing for so long (23 years next month), but business has been great, and we couldn’t be happier.”

ulsa has many options when it comes to fine art, but a trip to Philbrook Museum of Art provides an experience beyond just the paintings on the wall. Stroll through its elaborate gardens for an entirely different experience of art. Much of the art and majesty of the museum can be found everywhere one looks at Philbrook, the former home of oilman Waite Phillips.
Its permanent collection houses fine work from around the world, and an expanding collection also can flow into the satellite museum in the Brady Arts District. Rand Suffolk, director of the Philbrook Museum of Art, said the museum’s continued success comes from the continued support of its growing endeavors. “We’re grateful, not only to the voters, but also to our members who enable us to provide such a unique experience for all Tulsans,” Suffolk said.

owe’s serves about 15 million customers each week looking for the tools, supplies and expertise needed to make improvements to their homes or other structures. Several thousand of those shoppers walk through the doors weekly at eight Tulsa area stores. It’s an amazing success story, considering the publicly traded company began more than 65 years ago in a small North Carolina town that has fewer residents than Broken Arrow High School has students. Lowe’s now ranks as the second-largest home improvement retailer worldwide. It recorded sales of $53.4 billion last year across its 1,835 stores in

olks have been shopping in Tulsa since before statehood. In 1846, Lewis Perryman built a log cabin trading post at a site that is believed to be near 33rd Street and South Rockford Avenue. Then came a post office and a railroad, and — boom! — Tulsey Town was on its way to what you see today. Tulsans cherish outings to search flea markets and antique stores for throwback bargains and to visit stores for the latest and greatest in fashion, techno gadgets and more.
nstead of dragging the family to multiple stores to find footwear for everyone, consumers in the Tulsa area have found Dillard’s to be a one-stop shoe shop. With locations at Promenade and Woodland Hills malls, the department store offers shoes starting at infant sizes for its children’s collection and carries extended sizes for adults. The large selection of men’s shoes includes athletic, casual and dress footwear from household names like Nike, Sperry and Cole Haan. The women’s shoe department is — understandably so — the biggest of all, with hundreds of options, a smorgasbord of stilettos, wedges, boots, sandals, flats and sneakers. much more. The shops (and a children’s playground) are spread out over three acres. Persimmon Hollow Village is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The location of the “old west” shopping experience is 6927 S. 115th East Ave. It’s one

oody’s Jewelry calls itself Tulsa’s most trusted jeweler, and that trust was built over decades. The family-owned business is celebrating its 70th year. Ernest Moody Jr. and wife Mildred started the business as a watch and clock repair shop, according to Moody’s Jewelry President Tyler Jones. The shop evolved over the years to eventually include jewelry. “He decided that was really his love,” Jones said. Now Moody’s has six Tulsa locations and one in Broken Arrow. Through reputation and hard work, Moody’s is able to sell the best brands (including Rolex) the world has to offer.

Why do people love Moody’s? Among the reasons is Moody’s has taken care of its clients over the years, according to Jones. “We stand behind the product,” he said. “And that’s really what it’s about is offering products at a reasonable price and making sure we service all their needs.”
Moody’s Jewelry was voted best jeweler in the Tulsa area. Michael Guillory is manager of the Utica Square location. SHEILA HAYNES/for the Tulsa World
