Building Blocks Six factors will help determine where you should go to school CAREER When you think of “higher education,” you really should think about it as “hire education.” Preparing for the workforce is what this is all about. Anyone can find a job. Pursuing a career, though, is something different. It’s the vocation you plan to pursue and continually seek to master for years to come. What career you choose will help you decide if you need to go to a university, college or trade school to get the training you need to succeed in your chosen occupation. That might involve four years or more of academic instruction or it could be two years or less of vocational instruction that helps you become certified in a trade. Once you have one or more career ideas in mind, do some homework. Ask people already employed in those fields what kind of training is required to get hired.
FINANCES What kind of education can you afford? That will determine a lot about your options. Have you saved any money for college? Do you have any family members who are willing to help pay for any of your educational expenses? Your first step, if you haven’t already taken it, should be filling out a FAFSA application. That stands for “Free Application for Federal Student Aid.” It’s a service of the federal government that helps determine what kinds of scholarships and loans you are eligible to receive. Every school you apply to will ask you about it. That will help you begin to establish a budget.

CLASSES Every school is known for certain programs that stand out. Once you’ve decided your major field of study, start asking around about which schools specialize in that degree. Faculty play the biggest part in helping students learn. Look through a school’s catalog and see what kind of credentials the educators hold. What kind of professional accomplishments have they earned? Also consider a school’s physical resources — do they offer the latest technology and up-to-date facilities that help model what the professional world will be like when you graduate? Check to see if online classes are available, too.
FRIENDS & FUN While college is about preparing for a trade or career, it’s also part of the transition from living at home to being on your own. You will learn so much more about life. You will be making new friends, from your roommate to your classmates and a lot more people from many walks of life. It’s an exciting time, and it can be a lot of fun. What types of things do you like to do? Find a school with the right environment where you can balance recreation with your education.
LOCATION Some people like to stay close to home after they graduate from high school. Others like to get far away and explore the world. Being in a different place can be an education in and of itself, but it also can be expensive. Out-of-state tuition is often higher, and don’t forget to factor in the transportation costs. Location also can mean the difference between taking courses online or living on campus and having to pay rent and other costs. Be sure to plan a campus visit to any school you are thinking about attending. Most schools offer opportunities for prospective students to spend a day or weekend on campus so you can get a feel for classes and housing options.
ALUMS lt’s difficult to comprehend this now, but you are choosing to become part of a family when you decide on a specific school. You become part of a school’s alumni just by taking classes there, even if you don’t graduate. It’s a special connection you will have for the rest of your life. It also creates networking opportunities that can pay dividends down the road professionally when you seek employment.

UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & ARTS OF OKLAHOMA Chickasha, Oklahoma • 800-933-8726 • usao.edu
The world is complex, and the challenges facing this generation reflect that complexity. Isn’t it time for an educational approach that does as well? University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma’s interdisciplinary core curriculum is not just a bundle of general education requirements with a fancy name. USAO’s Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) program is a carefully designed sequence of courses that incorporates many academic traditions while building connections between them. These classes are generally team-taught by two or more professors from different disciplines. The IDS program is the spine that has held USAO’s liberal arts mission upright for 50 years. USAO’s Mission: The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma is the state’s only public liberal arts college. Its mission is to provide the public with a distinctive and accessible science and arts education. In combining an interdisciplinary core curriculum with superior instruction in major fields of study, USAO aims to provide a thorough education that prepares students for meaningful, purposeful lives. USAO graduates are living proof that the liberal arts model will enable students to learn, exercise critical thinking and communicate. Within one year of graduation, a higher percentage of graduates from USAO are employed than from any other university in Oklahoma. Regardless of a student’s path, the skills gained at USAO are time-tested and designed to last. This is why USAO is recognized by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni as one of only 23 universities nationwide
meeting the highest standards in requiring every student to have a solid foundation in math, science, literature, history and other core subjects. School Location Chickasha, Oklahoma — within 35 minutes of urban shopping and entertainment in three directions. National Distinctions USAO’s unusual status and performance as a public institution has attracted extensive independent and unsolicited recognition from multiple national observers of higher education. Together, they praise the value of the school’s combination of academic quality, accessibility and affordability, and its record of especially enhancing the social, economic and financial prospects of its graduates. In October 2014, the Washington, D.C., education thinktank American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) surveyed more than 1,000 colleges and universities nationwide to see if they require graduates to complete seven course curriculum courses. USAO is one of only 23 institutions in the US., and the only Oklahoma university, to receive an “A” grade for requiring at least six of the seven subjects deemed essential to a liberal arts education: composition, literature, intermediatelevel foreign language, American
government/history, economics, math and science. Other recent accolades received include: • Kiplinger Personal Finance Magazine listing USAO first on its 2015 national list of the “25 Best College Values Under $30,000 a Year, 2015”; • Washington Monthly ranking USAO fourth in the country for “serving the public good” by encouraging “upward social mobility”; • USAO being the only school in Oklahoma listed in U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best Colleges “National Liberal Arts Colleges” • A web-based national resource, thebestschools.org, designating USAO as one of only two Oklahoma colleges in its 2014 list of “100 Best U.S. Colleges and Universities by State.” .
