Commitment + gutsy play will = Tiger success
O
pening game action is just over a week away and for the Coweta Tigers, it is a new leadership attitude and style. Head Coach Tim Harper has made it clear it needs to be a total commitment from everyone if this is to be a successful start. Finally getting in pads on Aug. 16, the Tigers are eager to compete in their final scrimmage at 5A-4 front runner Collinsville Friday night on the road. They open the regular season Sept. 6 at home, hosting the Wagoner Bulldogs in the exciting and competitive Highway 51 Shootout. Other non-district opponents will be 5A-4 Tahlequah (H) and 4A Catoosa (T). The Tigers, who advanced to the 5A quarterfinals last season, will compete through a challenging schedule that includes 5A-3 district opportunities against Ada (T), Durant (T), Tulsa Edison (HPink Out), McAlester (Thursday Homecoming), Tulsa Hale (T), Bishop Kelley (H) and Glenpool (T). The first major challenge for Harper is solidifying the quarterback position, with three sophomore candidates currently getting a solid look at that leadership role. Returning defensive starter and backup quarterback Gage Hamm is the leading candidate to start the season behind center, with Carter Fuser and Cade Conner both getting lots of opportunities. “We have had a good summer, prob-

ably 70-75 percent of our athletes are totally committed to our program. They are hard workers and I am impressed with the good mix of talent throughout the grades,” Harper said. “Our young kids are working hard and must get ready in case they have to be called upon like last season to step up and fill injury slots. We are working hard on getting stronger and tougher. “Offensively we will continue to be in the spread formation, looking to throw the ball when we can. But we must become more balanced with a solid running game to make that a possibility. We definitely want to be more physical. “Defensively, we will basically be running a 4-3 set, working hard every play and running to the ball as a team. Our kids will play hard every single play or they will not be on the field. We have to play with a lot of guts!” Coweta Football hosted a special treat for fans this season. After the annual Media Day on Aug. 16, the Tigers
conducted half field scrimmages with the 7th, 8th, 9th, junior varsity and varsity squads, giving fans their first glimpses of the 2019 Tigers. Coach Harper will work with Assistant Head Coach Scott Chronister as cooffensive coordinators. Coming to the Tigers with Coach Harper is Macklyn Chermack, who will serve as defensive coordinator for 2019. Profiles on the 2019 individual coaches are found else-where in this special edition. Excited, full of energy and definitely committed to each and every player, the entire Coweta Tiger coaching staff is totally committed to their job assignments. Coach Harper and his staff have worked hard to impress upon players, from the youngest to varsity, the importance of understanding their role in the overall success of the team. CLAY ALLEN

reaking four Coweta Tiger football records last season, senior wide receiver Blake Lair has his sights set on career records for catches and yards gained as the 2019 season unfolds. Lair missed several early season games last season before settling into a solid game-after-game performance as the Tigers advanced to the 5A quarterfinals. “Lair has good ball skills, obviously has shown he can catch the ball and he is a consistent offensive producer that has big play potential,” Coach Scott Chronister said. Records set last season include the single-game touchdown record (4) and yardage record (201) against Tulsa Hale in District 5A-3 action. He needs 22 catches to break the career catch record of 84 set in 2010-12 by Hunter Rasberry and needs just 123 yards to claim the career yardage record, now 1,339 yards set by Mike Webber from 2006-08. Lair finished last season with 48 catches for 969 yards, 16 touchdowns, with his longest a 64-yarder.

P
roviding a road block defensive mentality last season, senior defensive lineman led returning defenders in tackles and provided a run stopping presence for opponents.
McDermott has 92 tackles with 83 of those unassisted, as well as nine tackles for loss, one sack and two fumble recoveries headed into his senior campaign. The Tiger defense made marked improvements last year that led to a 5A quarterfinal finish. “Aggressive, great feet and good football instincts,” is how defensive line coach David McGrath summarizes McDermott. McDermott has a busy school year ahead. He is also a varsity wrestler and baseball player, thus a hard worker in every endeavor.

Gage Hamm
Wesley Spohn
uickly grabbing the attention of Coweta Tiger coaches in 2018, sophomore Gage Hamm as a 6’3” freshman took command of his defensive safety assignments and finished the season with four team leading interceptions.
pening his junior season, Coweta Tiger tailback Wesley Spohn is set to be a key element in the new game plan of first year Head Coach Tim Harper. He returns as the top rusher for the Tigers during his sophomore campaign last season.
Q
Additionally, Hamm had 76 tackles (73 unassisted in the open field) as well as three tackles for loss. Groomed also as a quarterback of the future, he carried the ball nine times for 31 yards in the 5A quarterfinal battle at Ardmore. With the defection of senior quarterback J.D. Geneva to Tulsa Union, Hamm has quickly become the leading candidate to lead the Tigers this season. Working along with fellow sophomores Carter Fuser and Cade Conner, Hamm is projected to start. Head Coach Tim Harper is excited about the abilities of all three young men, but feels Hamm has the edge early. Hamm is also a member of the Tiger wrestling team who qualified for the 5A State Championships last season.
O
Spohn carried the football 132 times for 481 yards and six touchdowns in 2018. His longest score was a 30-yard run. He also caught 19 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns, with the longest a 71-yarder for a score. “Wesley displays more quickness than most kids. He is not big, but has good open field skills and has big play potential,” Coach Scott Chronister said.

MEET THE COACHING STAFF
DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR Macklin Chermack
J
oining the Coweta Tigers as defensive coordinator will be Macklin Chermack, coming from Mena, Arkansas with Head Coach Tim Harper.
Chermack spent eight years with South Arkansas University as a graduate assistant coach after graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and earning his master’s degree at Ohio University. “Facilities are excellent here and the people have been so supportive of our staff. Also, the athletes have responded well to our new staff changes. I am excited to get started with this new opportunity,” Chermack said. Chermack has a veteran staff of assistants to help with his transition and a group of athletes that showed marked improvement last season, especially in the underclassmen called upon by the Tigers to fill injury vacancies. Defense is an area the Tigers need to become stronger in as they have had trouble in past seasons completing games successfully although the offense put high point totals on the scoreboard.

Scott Chronister Assistant Head Coach/ Co-Offensive Coordinator
Providing solid help to first year Head Coach Tim Harper, Coach Chronister brings former head coaching experience at Tulsa Hale as well as 6A assistant experience at Sapulpa to the Tigers. This is his third year with the Tigers and was an asset in coordinating Spring practice after the departure of Coach Tim Holt, Jr.
David McGrath Defensive Line
A rock solid veteran on the Tiger coaching staff, Coach McGrath begins his 15th season at Coweta. Experienced in virtually all offensive types of attacks over the years, his defensive linemen last season had a solid campaign of tackles, helping the Tigers advance to the 5A quarterfinals.

Chase Stookey Defensive Backs
Beginning his second season on the Tiger varsity staff, Coach Moses has worked in the junior high program and is faced with the job of adapting his group’s blocking schemes to a new attack expected with the start of a new coaching regime.
Beginning his second year with the Tiger varsity, Coach Ridenour will be charged with adapting to the new offensive philosophy brought to the Tigers with the change of head coach. He has some returning talent to help with the transition.
Coach McHenry is new to the Tiger varsity coaching staff, but no stranger to Coweta Tiger football. His dad, Ronald McHenry, was Coweta head football coach from 1981-2003. Coming to the Tigers from 21 years with the Catoosa Indians, he should fit right in with the changing culture of the program under a new head coach. “It feels good to be back — like coming home, but it definitely is a lot different,” Coach McHenry said.
New to the staff as an adjunct coach, Coach Steele comes to the Tigers from Muskogee last year. He has made coaching stops at Tulsa Union, Broken Arrow (twice) Tulsa East Central, Owasso and Catoosa. He graduated from Northeastern State University where he played football and baseball.
Joining the staff this season, Coach Stookey student taught at Coweta four years ago. He comes to the Tigers from Dewey where he worked with defensive ends, linebackers, as offensive coordinator and with the defensive secondary.

oweta Tiger juniors are ready to continue a strong showing from last season as sophomores when several were forced to step up into key roles due to injuries. Running back Wesley Spohn anchors the ground crew, rushing for 481 yards and six touchdowns last season as well as scoring twice on pass receptions with 215 yards in receptions. Defensively is where the group proved themselves last season with Jaxon Stidham (77 tackles), Gunnar McCollough (66 tackles, four interceptions) and Justin Hines (63 tackles, 10 for loss). They rose to the challenge late in the season to help propel the Tigers to the 5A quarterfinals. Returning starter on the offensive line is left tackle William Withers. He is one of three returners and Coach Josh Moses feels he will make big strides in blocking this season. Competing for the Tigers this season will be Switzerland exchange student Alasondro Coirate. Coming to Coweta from his home country, Coirate competed with an independent football club at home and is an exciting addition to the Tiger attack. An eager group behind them is now ready for their chance at varsity level action as the new era of Head Coach Tim Harper develops on the gridiron.

FOOTBALL PREVIEW
Changes made to several rules Several football rule changes this season will have an effect on prep play. Among them is it is now legal to use instant replay, only to determine if a call on the field is correct. Other changes include the use of a 40/25 second play clock to determine delay of game. A legal
offensive line includes five players with numbers 50-79 on the line, and no more than four players can legally be lined up as a back. It is now illegal to trip any opponent, including the ball carrier, and the name plate area located directly below the back collar of the game jersey
is now included in the horse-collar foul. The penalty for illegally kicking or batting the football has been reduced to 10 yards from the previous 15 yards. Beginning in 2024, jersey numbers must be clearly a contrast from the body color and be a single, solid color.
