Foundation to honor state’s top educators, students OKLAHOMA CITY – Five outstanding Oklahoma educators will be honored along with 100 of the state’s top public high school seniors when the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence hosts its 28th Academic Awards Banquet at 6 p.m. Saturday, at the Embassy Suites Conference Center, 2501 Conference Drive, Norman.

“Learn, Serve, Connect!” is the theme of this year’s banquet, which will feature a keynote address by Harvard professor and author Robert D. Putnam, whose best-selling works include “Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community.” David L. Boren, founder and chairman of the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence, will serve as emcee for the statewide tribute honoring “the best of the best” in Oklahoma’s public schools.

The gala event, which is attended by nearly 1,000 people, will also feature musical entertainment by the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute Orchestra. Admission is $50 per person.

The Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence is a nonprofit, charitable organization founded in 1985 by then-U.S. Sen. Boren to recognize and encourage academic excellence in Oklahoma’s public schools.

Through its Academic Awards Program, the foundation has awarded more than $4 million in merit-based scholarships and cash awards to honor outstanding graduating seniors as Academic All-Staters and exceptional

educators as Medal for Excellence winners.

The foundation will present its 2014 Oklahoma Medal for Excellence Awards in Teaching to elementary honoree Cheryl Tate, Woodland Hills Elementary School, Lawton; secondary winner Donna Gradel, Broken Arrow Senior High School, Broken Arrow; regional university/ community college winner Emily Dial-Driver, professor of English, Rogers State University, Claremore; and research university recipient Katheleen R. Guzman, professor of law, University of Oklahoma, Norman. The winner of the Medal for Excellence in elementary/secondary administration is J. Michael McClaren, superintendent, Claremore Public Schools.

Each medal recipient will receive a $5,000 cash award as well as a glass “Roots and Wings” sculpture, created by the late Oklahoma artist Ron Roberts and produced by Jim Triffo of Oklahoma City.

With support from scholarship sponsors, the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence will also present merit-based Academic All-State Scholarships of $1,000 each and medallions to 100 Academic AllState Scholars.

Prof is keynote speaker

Putnam is the best-selling author of ‘Bowling Alone’

KLAHOMA CITY – Best-selling author and Harvard professor Robert D. Putnam will help honor Oklahoma’s outstanding public school students and educators when he gives the keynote address at the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence Academic Awards Banquet Saturday, at the Embassy Suites Conference Center in Norman.

The gala awards banquet honors 100 of Oklahoma’s top public high school seniors as Academic AllStaters and five outstanding educators as Medal for Excellence winners. Admission to the banquet is $50 per person, and a banquet reservation form is available at www.ofe.org.

Putnam’s address is titled “The Opportunity Gap: Reviving the American Dream” and focuses on his latest research on the growing class gap among American young people and the implications for social mobility. Putnam is Malkin Professor of Public Policy at Harvard University, where he teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses.

This year, he is the Distinguished Visiting Professor at Aarhus University in Denmark. Putnam is former dean of Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and has been praised by the “London Times” as “the most influential academic in the world

today.”

He has written 14 books, including the best-selling works “Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community,” “Making Democracy Work,” and, more recently, “Better Together: Restoring the American Community.” Both “Bowling Alone” and “Making Democracy Work” are the most cited publications in the social sciences worldwide in the last half century.

Putnam’s most recent book, “American Grace,” coauthored with David Campbell of the University of Notre Dame, focuses on the role of religion in American public life. The book is the winner of the 2011 Woodrow Wilson Foundation Award for the best book on government, politics or international affairs.

An adviser to several world leaders, Putnam has been a consultant to several U.S. presidents and British prime ministers. He co-founded the Saguaro Seminar, which brings together the world’s leading thinkers and practitioners to develop actionable ideas for civic renewal.

Putnam is the recipient of the National Humanities Medal, the nation’s highest honor for contributions in the humanities.

He has also earned the Skytte Prize, the world’s highest accolade for a political scientist.

wenty-eight years ago, while serving Oklahoma as a U.S. senator, David L. Boren brought together a group of Oklahoma business and community leaders with the common goal of improving public education in the state.

All agreed that private investment was crucial to the success of public schools in Oklahoma. They also wanted to celebrate the successes of Oklahoma’s public school system by giving statewide public attention to outstanding students and innovative educators. The result was the formation of the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence, established with the mission of recognizing and encouraging academic excellence in Oklahoma’s public schools.

Today, the foundation is a non-profit, charitable organization supported by private contributions and led by a 180-member board of trustees composed of leaders in business, education and public service from throughout Oklahoma. To carry out its mission, the foundation focuses on five key programs: Through its Academic Awards Program, the foundation has provided more than $4 million in scholarships and cash awards since 1987 to honor outstanding graduating seniors as Academic All-Staters and exceptional educators as Medal for Excellence winners.

Through its Local Education Foundation Outreach Program, the foundation provides free technical support and training to local education foundations across the state and sponsors the Fall Forum for Local Education Foundations and other training and networking events for education foundation volunteers and public school supporters.

ties and direct access to Williamsburg historians. The foundation is co-sponsor of the annual Colonial Day at the State Capitol and promotes the development of Colonial Day events statewide through its website at www.colonialday.org. In recent years, the foundation has partnered with Mount Vernon, the Oklahoma His-

tory Center and A+ Schools to co-sponsor the George Washington Teaching Ambassador Program, offering hands-on history trunks and teacher training.

During its 20th anniversary in 2006, the foundation launched the David and Molly Boren Mentoring Initiative to promote the growth and establishment of quality

youth mentoring programs throughout Oklahoma.

Through the initiative, the foundation is working with school districts, businesses, faith groups and mentoring organizations to promote mentoring as a positive step toward academic success.

The foundation sponsors the annual Oklahoma Mentor Day, held at the state capitol, to recognize outstanding youth mentors from throughout the state.

With generous support from its partners, the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence administers Professional Development Funding for Teachers. In 2014, the foundation awarded a record number of Teacher Grants for Professional Development to help teachers attend national conferences and institutes in their chosen fields.

More than $160,000 was awarded this year, thanks to support from several new and returning sponsors, including major gifts from the Westheimer Family Foundation, the Cherokee Nation, the Boeing Company and JPMorgan Chase.

Since 2006, the foundation has partnered with the national Fund for Teachers and the Tulsa Community Foundation to provide grants of up to $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for teams of teachers for self-designed summer professional development opportunities in locations around the world.

With generous bridge funding from the national Fund for Teachers, 727 Oklahoma educators have received grants totaling $2.5 million in the past eight years.

“The Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence is truly one of Oklahoma’s treasures,” President Les Risser said. “For almost 30 years, the foundation has promoted and supported Oklahoma educators, honored its best and brightest students, and – through its programs – has made a significant impact throughout the state.”

2014 Medal-winning educators announced

he Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence has announced the winners of its Oklahoma Medal for Excellence awards honoring five outstanding educators in Oklahoma’s public schools.

The awards will be presented at the

Each of the five winners will receive a $5,000 cash prize and a glass “Roots and Wings” sculpture, de-

signed by the late Oklahoma artist Ron Roberts and produced by Jim Triffo of Oklahoma City. Medals are awarded annually to outstanding Oklahoma teachers, one each at the elementary, secondary, community college/regional university and re-

search university levels. In addition, the foundation presents a Medal for Excellence to an exceptional administrator from the elementary or secondary level.

This year’s Medal for Excellence winners in teaching are:

Secondary teaching: Donna Gradel, Broken Arrow Senior High School, Broken Arrow Winner of the Oklahoma Medal for Excellence in Secondary Teaching, Gradel teaches Advanced Placement Environmental Science at Broken Arrow High School.

Under Gradel’s leadership, enrollment in AP Environmental Science at Broken Arrow High has grown from 13 to 125. Gradel engages her students in learning by presenting them with real-world environmental problems and challenging them to find solutions.

dents have designed and created French drains, river bank erosion walls, recycling programs and campus energy audits. Their greatest challenge came in 2012 when Gradel asked students to help provide much-needed protein and clean water to a remote district in Kenya. Gradel, who had recently traveled to Kenya on a Fund for Teachers Fellowship with colleague Cindy Gharibvand, returned with a mission: for students to design, build and test aquaponics units – sustainable

food production systems used to raise fish and cultivate plants.

“The classroom challenge was to build a prototype we could copy on a large scale to benefit an orphanage in Kenya,” Gradel said.

Five students volunteered to accompany Gradel and Gharibvand to Kenya last summer to build the fullsize aquaponics system.

Private donations and a student fundraising campaign, Aqua for Tharaka, supported the project and also provided funds to build a well.

“The world is a better place because of Donna’s passion and inspiration,” Gharibvand said.

Research university teaching: Katheleen R. Guzman, professor of law, University of Oklahoma, Norman

Winner of the Medal for Excellence in Teaching at a Research University, Guzman is the Earl Sneed Centennial Professor of Law and M A P C O/ Williams Presidential Professor of Law at the University of Oklahoma.

Former OU College of Law Dean Andrew M. Coats said Guzman “makes a potentially tedious topic – wills and trusts – interesting by injecting humor and creativity into her lectures and assignments. She relates to students by making the law real to them.” For example, in one class Guzman explained how mortgages worked by giving students a copy of her own mortgage.

Former student Cullen D. Sweeney, now a law clerk for a Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals judge, said Guzman is his “hero” with a gift for making complex matters seem accessible and daunting issues seem surmountable. He said the first time he began to feel like a lawyer was in Professor Guzman’s property class when he and a classmate were assigned to argue dueling sides of a difficult case in front of the class.

A law professor for more than two decades, Guzman said she sets high expectations for her students, with the ultimate goal of teaching students how to teach themselves. Guzman has been a capstone adviser to more than 100 students and serves as faculty adviser for several student organizations. She has received more than 15 teaching awards at OU, including being named outstanding law professor by the student body.

Elementary teaching: Cheryl Tate, Woodland Hills Elementary School, Lawton Tate, winner of the Oklahoma Medal for Excellence in Elementary Education, teaches third grade at Woodland Hills Elementary School in Lawton.

A 35-year teaching veteran, Tate recalls a defining childhood memory when her parents built a school house in the garage so she could practice being a teacher.

“My passion for this career developed in the garage of my childhood home and is still evident today,” she said.

Tate, who earned a master’s degree in reading education, is dedicated to lifelong learning and has been especially influenced by three professional development programs: Great Expectations, which establishes high

Parent Christa Bear said Tate’s school day is packed with innovative ideas and teachable moments.

“She teaches through hands-on activities whether children are learning fractions by breaking up Hershey bars, singing about ‘never giving up,’ diagramming skeletons or collaborating with classmates to create something original.”

Tate is eager to celebrate student success, awarding “fuzzies” for good behavior or celebrating math achievements by designating students as “Multiplication Kings and Queens.”

Tate makes community service an integral part of her curriculum, anexpectations and celebrates student nually hosting a Singing Valentines achievement; Literacy First, a re- fundraiser and letting students research-based process for improving search and choose a worthy charity.

Frank Elwell describes Dial-Driver as an alchemist, because she combines her “education, military background (as a former Army captain), the can-do attitude of a rancher” to bring a rich array of experiences and insights to teaching.

Dial-Driver uses creative art projects, elements of pop culture and even children’s books as teaching tools in her courses.

Former student Amanda Garner said Dial-Driver’s creative projects require students to create visual elements to represent a theme, character or other literary element. “It was a great way to get students to look at the works we were reading with fresh eyes, and it was a lot of fun!” The recipient of Rogers State’s Pixley Faculty Award for Excellence, Dial-Driver carries the distinction of being one of the most popular teachers on campus and one of the most demanding. One former student said she used to resent Dial-Driver for making her re-write papers until she got them right. “But now that I’m in grad school, my professors tell me I’m their best writer,” she said, thanking her teacher.

Elementary/secondary administration: J. Michael McClaren, superintendent, Claremore Public Schools The winner of the Medal for Excellence in Elementary/Secondary Administration, M c C l a ren is superintendent for Claremore Public S c h o o l s.

M c Claren joins his wife, high school history teacher Jan McClaren, to become the first ever husband-wife team of Medal for Excellence winners. Jan received the honor in 2006 in secondary teaching.

Under McClaren’s leadership, the district has reconfigured grade levels and attendance areas to provide the optimal classroom size and quality instruction. Claremore has added a new elementary school and new classrooms at the junior high and the high school, as well as remodeling and

expanding Roosa Elementary School and adding a new greenhouse. Other major projects included the construction of a new multi-sports arena, a football stadium and the world-class Robson Performing Arts Center. McClaren launched a new technology education course at the junior high, which later became home to the nation’s first middle school FAB Lab, a computer-assisted drafting lab where students create manufacturing and engineering projects. “Mr. McClaren’s belief that students can do more and become more has led to achievement,” said Claremore High School Principal Todd Steidley. Since 2000, Claremore has had 18 Academic All-Staters, a Gates Millenium Scholar, a U.S. Presidential Scholar, multiple Academic Bowl titles and two model Great Expectations Schools.

Despite being a busy administrator, McClaren still makes time to participate in the classroom. He partners with U.S. history students to recreate a model Battle of Gettysburg and tours elementary schools each holiday season to read books.

Edmond Memorial High School LaMascus is a National Merit Finalist and Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction.

He has earned the positions of drumline captain and principal percussionist for the Edmond Memorial band.

Berryhill High School A class valedictorian, Winters is president of Berryhill’s National Honor Society, captain of Fellowship for Christian Athletes and active in Student Council.

She has studied dance since 1999, including ballet, jazz, tap and hip-hop styles. She was a dancer in the 2012 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Winters is a leader in the Youth Philanthropy Initiative, which invests time and money in projects serving other teens. Commemorative poster features painting by Peña

• ‘Los Cuentos’ depicts a family reading books together

“Los Cuentos,” a mixed media painting by Southwestern artist Amado Peña Jr. of Santa Fe, has been selected for the commemorative poster for the 28th annual Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence Academic Awards banquet.

“Los Cuentos,” (The Tales), depicts a family reading books together. The vibrant painting is part of Peña’s Colcha Series created in 1989.

“Each year, the foundation creates a poster featuring a Native American-themed painting to present to its Academic All-State and Medal for Excellence winners,” said Emily Stratton, executive director of the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence. “We are grateful to Amado Peña for sharing his artwork for our poster. Not only is Amado a respected artist, but he is also a champion for public education.”

A native of Laredo, Texas, Peña studied art and education at Texas A&I (now Texas A&M, Kingsville), where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

“For 10 years I was a teacher, and I could help share art through education,” said Peña, who taught art at several Texas high schools. “Now, art is my full-time job, my profession, and traveling to different shows has allowed me to educate and share in a whole new and exciting way.”

Because of their passion for education, Peña and his wife, J.B., started the Art Has Heart Foundation in 1996 to provide need-based college scholarships for students from New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, Colorado and Oklahoma. Their scholarships have supported more than 400 students, primarily in the arts.

Today Peña’s distinctive style of southwest art and Mestizo imagery is known throughout the world, and his work is part

Tribe of Arizona, Peña is dedicated to furthering the public’s knowledge and interest in the tribe, its art, its history and its culture. His work pays tribute to the Native Americans who survive by living in harmony with an untamed environment.

Peña’s work is inspired by such places as Canyon de Chelly, Spider Rock, Monument Valley, Enchanted Mesa, Acoma and Black Mesa.
