Give Time, Resources to Those in Need (GSM) — The homeless are often overlooked around the holidays as we gather with friends and family. People who are down on their luck and out of their homes this Christmas are likely scrounging for food and shelter, let alone gifts under the tree. They are in great need this season and can use a helping hand to boost their spirits.

Home Where Garbe’s Heart Is Garbe Industries Inc. has assisted with several charitable causes, such as Red Cross, Make A Wish and “Extreme Makeover Home Edition,” but they are very proud of their contributions to Habitat for Humanity. “Because we are in the home improvement business and have been involved in the community for more than 40 years, it just made sense to us to be involved with an organization that assists in building or improving housing conditions for those who need assistance,” says Garbe’s President Mary Schulze. Tulsa Habitat for Humanity is celebrating 26 years. The nonprofit Christian organization relies on the support of volunteers to donate their time, talents and finances to help eliminate poverty housing in the community. Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes and communities in partnership with those in need. Tulsa Habitat for Humanity and its volunteers have helped more than 280 families become homeowners. This means that more than 700 children are now growing up in a more stable, secure home setting. Faith-based groups, companies, foundations and individuals have financially sponsored and helped build these homes. In addition to building new homes, Tulsa Habitat for Humanity serves Tulsa-area homeowners. Its A Brush with Kindness program helps low-income families maintain their homes through improvements and repairs. “It is our responsibility not just as business owners but as a community family to help each other in need. Tulsa has always been known as a giving, caring city, and Garbe’s is no exception,” Schulze says.

Star Jewelers Gives Back to Broken Arrow Residents
Star Jewelers has been a part of the Broken Arrow community for four decades, and owner Dayna Mathney doesn’t lose sight of that relationship. “We have been in the heart of Broken Arrow for 41 years,” she says. “The BA community has been supportive of us, and any way that we can give back is of utmost importance to us.” Through Dec. 17, Star Jewelers will continue collecting new, unwrapped gifts for local children, ages newborn to 12 years old, at its store on Main Street. The donations will be donated to Broken Arrow Neighbors, a local nonprofit that helps families year-round. This time of year, the organization sponsors a gift shop where parents in need come and select presents for their children to open Christmas morning. It’s one of many ways Star Jewelers helps residents in need throughout the year. Mathney says the business supports the Diamond Dig, benefiting pancreatic cancer research; Tulsa Boys Home; and many Broken Arrow school events. Star Jewelers also provides the crown and pendant for Miss Broken Arrow to wear, and it has given gifts to the Broken Arrow Historical Society Museum. Sometimes the acts of charity become more personal. “We have fought cancer in our personal family as well,” Mathney says, “so any way we can help the research of stopping the spread of the disease, we are privileged to do so.” The company’s founder, Dale Brake, died from lung cancer, and he represents one of several people who are remembered with each gift made to cancer research. It’s simply a part of Star Jewelers’ core values. “We choose local agencies in our community and any cancer-related agencies,” Mathney says, “to give back, help fund research or to help those in need or who are less fortunate.”

Celebrate Super-Mom This Season (GSM) — For every diaper change or grocery list that goes unnoticed, the super-mom behind it deserves more than your standard Christmas gift. She deserves to be pampered, treated or excited by this year’s gift — no pressure. Luckily, it usually doesn’t take much for the selfless moms in our lives to feel loved. A hug from a child or thank-you from a spouse will get the job done. But this year, kick your gift-giving efforts up a notch by finding that perfect gift that rewards her daily efforts that keep the household running.
‘Me’ Time
What is a better gift than some “me time?” Send your sweetie away for a day to the spa center and let her soak in the massages, pedicures and facials. A little pampering can easily wipe away the stress that comes with housework and children, helping rejuvenate and re-energize Mom.
Room Redo
Is there a specific room in your home that drives the super-mom in your life crazy? Maybe it is cluttered or just plain unappealing to look at? Put your handy skills — or those of a trained professional — to good

use and renovate the problem area for her Christmas gift. You can offer her the gift as an IOU, telling her you have successfully saved money for the project and are ready to start.
Personalized Jewelry
Diamond rings and silver pendants will surely do the trick, but personalize a piece of jewelry to really speak to Mom’s heart. Most jewelers will engrave short phrases on a piece of jewelry — a special quote or maybe a saying that epitomizes your life together. Charm bracelets are another great idea and allow for the super-mom to customize it for years to come.

Toddlers
For 2- to 3-year-olds, it is often quantity over quality when it comes to Christmas gifts. These are the years you don’t necessarily have to break the bank for your holiday spending. A puzzle set with blocks or new toy instruments can be relatively inexpensive gifts that keep your toddler entertained. Consider your child’s walking stage when choosing a gift. If they are able to sit upright with no problem, then a collection of toy zoo animals may be the perfect gift. Toddlers who have discovered the art of walking will enjoy a drag-along toy animal or vehicle.

John Daniel Footwear Shines Light on Family Dan Parker, owner of John Daniel Footwear, is all about family — at work and within the community. “My wife owns Trojan Wine and Spirits and our oldest son, Keith, works for her. Our daughter, Kara, owns a gift shop in Utica Square called Boxworks, and our second son, Kevin, works for me at John Daniel Footwear,” says Parker. “When any of us need help in one of our stores, we are there to pitch in.” Giving back to the community is just as important to the Parker family. That’s why they support Family & Children’s Services and United Way. Family & Children’s Services provides life-changing behavioral health services to the most vulnerable people in our community, bringing healing to abused children, strengthening families in crisis and assisting in recovery for people experiencing mental illness and addiction. The organization also provides services such as DUI school, counseling, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, an Employee Assistance Program and comprehensive treatment as an alternative to incarceration for non-violent, prison-bound women. The Tulsa Area United Way works to build a stronger community by focusing on the three building blocks
of a better quality of life — education, health/safety and financial stability, recruiting people and organizations from across the community. The goal is to help individuals and families achieve their full potential. The Tulsa Area United Way serves 62 partner agencies in six counties of the Tulsa region. During its 90-year history, the Tulsa Area United Way has raised almost $670 million for the community. The Tulsa Area United Way serves more than 550,000 people annually (nearly 2,000 people per day) through its 61 partner agencies in the Tulsa region, including Creek, Okmulgee, Osage, Rogers, Tulsa and Wagoner counties. In the last five years, the Tulsa Area United Way has awarded more than $1.6 million in collaborative funding to meet challenges such as reducing homelessness, improving neighborhoods and providing outcomes measurement training for its partner agencies. “Tulsa has always been good to me in my 46 years of retail business, and I like repaying that kindness,” Parker says. “Here in Tulsa we take care of our own. It’s a pleasure to be a part of helping people in the Tulsa community.”

Making the Perfect Holiday Cookie (BPT) — Embrace nostalgia and create the perfect holiday cookie that tastes delicious and is easy to decorate. Instead of displaying a gingerbread house, cut sugar cookies using some snowman, tree and star cookie cutters to set up a festive and tasty holiday scene. Scatter some coconut shavings or crinkled strips of paper for snow and place holiday candies behind the cookies, so they stand up all night long. Try this recipe, using vanilla and peppermint extracts to provide a completely unique flavor your entire family will enjoy. CLASSIC HOLIDAY SUGAR COOKIES Makes 3 dozen Ingredients: 3 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 3/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened 1 cup superfine sugar 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream 3 1/4 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 teaspoon peppermint extract 2 eggs 1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar
1/4 cup all-purpose flour Directions: Preheat to 350 degrees. Line two large, baking sheets with parchment paper. Whisk flour, baking powder and salt in bowl until blended; set aside. In a large mixing bowl, add butter, sugar, cream, vanilla and peppermint extracts; beat with a handheld mixer on medium speed until fluffy (about two minutes). Reduce speed, adding eggs one at a time. With a rubber spatula, fold in the dry ingredients one half at a time. Divide dough and press each into a disk shape. Wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate for one hour. In a small bowl, whisk 1/4 cup each of confectioners’ sugar and flour until blended to use for dusting work surface. Place one piece of dough on a clean, dusted surface. Roll to about 1/8-inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutters and transfer with metal spatula to prepared cookie sheets. Gather remaining dough, cover with plastic and chill. Bake one sheet at a time until done (about 10 minutes). Cool cookies on wire racks. Decorate and store in an airtight container.

Surprise Golfers on Your Holiday List Golf is a sport that many take very seriously. No matter the skill level of that special someone on your Christmas list this year, plenty of options for gifts are available. New balls, golf bags and clubs will be flying off the shelves this holiday season. Why not set your gift apart from the rest?
GPS Units
Sometimes even the most high-level golfers need a hand. If they don’t have a caddy to help them measure distance or identify course challenges, the next best thing may be a portable GPS unit that gives them laseraccurate information on these factors. These units provide accurate yardages to both the green and layup locations. They display information on high-resolution screens and function similarly to a GPS device you may rely on in your car.
Animal Head Covers
Many of the sport’s superstars cover their club heads with stuffed animal heads like lions, Koala bears and tigers. The fluffy features may seem a bit zany, but they actually do serve a purpose — protecting the club heads from the elements while also giving many otherwise serious golfers a reason to relax and smile every once in a while.
ARochau/Fotolia
From monkeys to wild boars, you can find a product that fits the personality of the golfer in your life.
Rain Gear
Rain gear can be an invaluable tool to golfers who play through inclement weather. Waterproof rain hoods snap on a golf bag, allowing for easy access to clubs in adverse conditions.

Celebrity Attractions Integrates Generosity in Business Practices Celebrity Attractions has been bringing Broadway productions to Tulsa for three decades. Whether you’re mesmerized by the Grinch’s mischievous ways in “Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas” or are swept away in the romance of the Broadway hit “Once,” Celebrity Attractions keeps finding ways to delight local theater audiences at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. In addition to serving as ambassadors for entertainment, Celebrity Attractions is also generous in giving back to the community. “At Celebrity Attractions, we believe in integrating generosity into our business transactions,” says CEO Ed Payton. “Through our ‘Charitable Ticket Promotion’ partnerships with local charities, in which a portion of the ticket price is given to such wonderful organizations as Tulsa Area United Way, Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Center for Poets and Writers at OSU Tulsa, and John 3:16 Mission, we have been able to leverage tickets sales into impacting our communities in a positive way.” The most recent example was Celebrity Attractions presentation of “Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas” last month at the Tulsa PAC. For every presold ticket, Celebrity Attractions gave $5 to the Tulsa Area United Way. Through this effort they were able to present the nonprofit organization with a $3,000 check. The 2014-2015 season remains packed with four awardwinning shows “Once,” “Camelot,” “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Million Dollar Quartet.” There is something for the entire family, and supporting a company that gives back to your community is a gift for everyone involved.
