Welcome to Coweta!

C

oweta, my home town, is a very special place for me! In May of this year, I will be a resident of this community for 65 years. I have seen a lot of change in that time. I have seen it come from a small, sleepy town to what it is today. Back when I was a kid, my Arvil Morgan friends and I would ride bicycles and horses all over town. It wasn’t unusual for us to park our bikes in front of the Green Parrot Cafe or tie our horses around back, go inside and get a cold Pepsi. I have always enjoyed listening to old timers from years gone by until now tell stories about our town and the things they have seen and done. In those days, the roads were still gravel. Things were so much different then. I give a lot of credit to the Chamber of Commerce who saved our town from drying up like so many of the small towns around us. I think we have a great school system and outstanding police and fire departments. Although we are not the sleepy town we used to be, we still have that small-town atmosphere. When you go to the grocery store or Walmart and see people and friends you have grown up with all your life, you know you are at home. I would not trade the experience of growing up in this town for anything! Coweta is a great place for new families to move in and make lasting relationships. Welcome to our community! — ARVIL MORGAN

Whenever Cowetians gather for a parade twice a year, the community’s patriotic spirit always shows!  JOHN FERGUSON/AMERICAN-TRIBUNE

Welcome to Wagoner!

G The Wagoner Rose Garden Club is one of many civic groups in Wagoner that regularly give back to the community through various service projects. CHRISTY WHEELAND/AMERICAN-TRIBUNE

rowing up in Wagoner, Oklahoma one block from beautiful Lake Fort Gibson would be a dream for most kids. For me, it was a blessing that has lasted a lifetime. I attended Wagoner Public Schools, and knowing Mary every student in my class and Rowe most students in the grade ahead and one below was also a blessing. Staying in touch with many of those school friends years later is something that will only happen in a small, close knit community school. Marrying your high school sweetheart and raising a family in your hometown is the only lifestyle I would have. Now, seeing my children raise their children in this wonderful and loving town makes my heart happy. Being a part of the Wagoner community is so fulfilling! There are so many organizations in this great town doing the best for our community in their own way. Each works together to make sure Wagoner is a community that welcomes all and embraces the needs of residents. It’s hard for me as a business owner, wife, mother and grandmother to find time to volunteer with all of these great organizations. I have had to pick just a handful to devote time to, but each one has its own unique goal for this community and works hard to show others in our community the love that is here. Wagoner is my hometown. Wagoner has my heart and always will. Welcome! — MARY ROWE Lifelong Wagoner Resident

Cruisin’ in Coweta

T

he Broadway District in downtown Coweta resembles the days of yesteryear twice annually when the Coweta Chamber of Commerce hosts a Cruise Night and Slow Roll event. The event draws hundreds of people who sit on car trunks, in lawn chairs, check out one another’s autos and mingle while cars “drag Main”. It’s a perfect opportunity for businesses to stay open for late night shopping. Meanwhile, a slow drag competition stretches along a two-block course, giving drivers an opportunity to coast their autos and cross the finish line using no brakes to stop. Cash awards are up for grabs. Cruise Nights and Slow Drags are planned Saturday, May 11 and on a fall date to be determined.

Drivers in Coweta’s first-ever Slow Drag competition wait for Mayor Evette Morris to drop the green flag, sending them on their way to a 200-yard coast down Bristow Ave.

Wagoner celebrates Christmas in big way

W

agoner’s Christmas celebration is traditional and epic in its size and scale. The season gets going with Switchmas. That’s where Santa pays a brief visit, talented singers perform and the lighting of the city Christmas tree takes place. During the tree-lighting ceremony church carolers sing traditional songs of the season. The tree lighting also allows citizens to hang Christmas ornaments on the tree and take in the Semore Park atmosphere.

The Christmas Parade follows a few days later down Cherokee Street and is always well attended with floats, groups, organizations and special guests. There is no shortage of holiday events in Wagoner during the Thanksgiving and Christmas Seasons, either. In late November, the Holiday Home Tour sponsored by the Wagoner Rose Garden Club will showcase many local homes adorned in Christmas splendor. Throughout the season, Wagoner’s Holiday Concert Series is held at the Wagoner Civic Center. Tickets

are only $4 each! The Wagoner Area Chamber of Commerce hosts its annual Christmas Parade of Lights on the first Thursday of December, and the event is preceded by a spaghetti dinner at Holy Cross Catholic Church. The First Presbyterian Church hosts a free Community Christmas Dinner on Christmas Day. The public is invited.

Enjoy Fort Gibson Lake!

N

ortheast Oklahoma is known for its vast lakes and streams, and the many recreational opportunities they afford. Just east of Wagoner lies Fort Gibson Lake, and the community serves as the gateway to some of the best fishing, lake-centered fun and camping in Oklahoma. Anglers from across the country participate in a number of professional and amateur fishing tournaments in Wagoner’s own back yard, including the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division, Bass Pro Shops Central Open and the FLW

College Fishing Tournament. The lake also plays host to the Youth World Bowfishing Championships, which draws hundreds of bowfishing enthusiasts each summer. The Wagoner Area Chamber of Commerce holds annual fishing tournaments such as the Fish Wagoner Spring Derby and the Lucky 13 Fishing Tournament. Also on Fort Gibson Lake, Sequoyah State Park has a top-of-the-line lodge and an 18-hole, par 70 golf course, as well as The Lodge at Sequoyah State Park with cottage-style cabins and

rooms. In addition, there is a walk-in pool, splash park and lakeside beach for guests, as well as paddle boats and pontoons offered for rent. Sequoyah State Park is abundant with recreation — RV and tent camping,

mountain biking, hiking trails, riding stables, marinas and other waterrelated activities. The Three Forks Nature Center, located within the park, also offers an educational opportunity to engage with nature displays, wild animals and a park naturalist.
