Wagoner County American-Tribune

Welcome to Wagoner!

ear Wagoner, There are many things that make you an irreplaceable town and they all deserve recognition, but I’m only able to touch on a few. You are a place that I can be downtown or at the lake within a few minutes of my own home. The lake is where I take my kids to enjoy the same swimming hole, fishing spot and campfires that I enjoyed growing up. You can go to the lake, spend no money and have the best time of your life, just don’t swallow any of the water. I love that your side streets are not too busy for my kids to ride their bikes on or play with their

friends. Your dirt roads gave me a place to drive a truck that I wasn’t quite old enough to have a license for yet, as many of us did growing up. On those same dirt roads, my kids have sat on my lap and helped steer the truck into their grandparent’s driveway. You are a town with a football stadium that is booming with Bulldog fans every Friday night. You are a town with schools that feel like home for many students. Teachers and faculty know almost every student by name, whether they had them in class last year or 20 years ago. You are a town teaming with local events run by volunteers, such as the Christmas Parade, Family Fun Day, Beats Blues & BBQ, Summerfest, livestock shows, Farmer’s

Market, 4th of July firework show and many more. I have not only been a supporter of your events, but also a volunteer at times. It has given me a deeper appreciation for what they provide for our community. I find comfort in the fact that you are a town full of familiar people who wave at strangers from their porch or the driver’s seat. Neighbors bring you a dessert, a carton of fresh eggs or produce from their garden. These same people pull together during any crisis that our town has experienced. They arise out of their homes and venture into the streets after a huge wind storm that has strewn hundreds of trees over homes and electric lines. They have chainsaws in hand

ready to help their fellow neighbor take care of the wreckage. Neighbors use their fishing boats to rescue animals and people from their homes during historic floods. You also band together to provide a family with items they need after losing their home to a fire. You are a town overflowing with compassionate, big-hearted people. Whether they be multigenerational families that have lived here their entire lives or newcomers that moved in the past month, the generosity runs deep. You are not just some town to me and countless others, you are home.

Welcome to Coweta!

e are Coweta — a growing city with a “small town”

feel!

Christi Woodrow

We are the best of both worlds. We are lifelong residents who are proud of our town’s history. We are also young families who came here to raise our children away from the bustle of a big city. We are entrepreneurs with new ideas and generations who are carrying on family-owned businesses. We are cream of the crop educators who love our students like they are our

own children. We are also homeschooling parents who lovingly provide an education to our own families. We are heroes who keep our town healthy and pro-

tected. We are farmers, bankers, health care professionals, mechanics and specialists in our respective fields. We are musicians, ath-

letes and artists. We are the Broadway District that keeps our downtown alive and thriving. We cheer together during sporting events and wor-

ship together in church. We are a community that comes together for annual events such as our Patriotic Festival in June, Fall Festival in September, Trunk-orTreats in October and Christmas activities in December, to name just a few. We rally behind, laugh with, celebrate, grieve with and love each other through the different seasons of life and meet the needs of our neighbors. We have vision and the best interests in mind for our community. We are Coweta — welcome to the family! Christi Woodrow Long-time resident of Coweta

ortheast Oklahoma is known for its vast lakes and streams, and the many recreational opportunities they afford. Just east of Wagoner lies Fort Gibson Lake, and the community serves as the gateway to some of the best fishing, lakecentered fun and camping in Oklahoma. Each year, anglers from across the country participate in more than 50 professional and amateur fishing tournaments in Wagoner’s own back yard, including those at the high school

and collegiate levels. The lake also plays host to the Youth World Bowfishing Championships every summer. Also on Fort Gibson Lake, Sequoyah State Park has a top-of-the-line lodge and a 9-hole golf course, as well as The Lodge at Sequoyah State Park with cottage-style cabins and rooms. In addition, there is a walk-in pool, splash park and lakeside beach for guests. Paradise Cove Marina offers water bikes, paddle boats and pontoons for rent. Sequoyah State Park is abundant with recreation — RV and tent camping, mountain biking, hiking trails, riding stables, marinas and other water-related activities. The Three Forks Nature Center offers an educational opportunity to engage with nature displays, wild animals and a park naturalist. Multiple arenas are located across the Fort Gibson Lake region.

Be prepared, be safe

The Wagoner County Emergency Preparedness and Safety Expo is an annual event put on by Wagoner County Emergency Management and the Coweta Chamber of Commerce. Its goal is to share information from a host of vendors that will help

residents become more prepared for emergencies of all kinds — from severe weather and flooding to fires and much more. The Expo is held on the last Saturday of March at the Coweta Intermediate High School. It features an Oklahoma Blood Institute blood drive to

raise funds for Wagoner County schools, a Firefighter Combat Challenge and a host of demonstrations. The event is a great way to learn more about community resources that help keep Wagoner County a safe place to live.
