International Networking .
by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ying ZHANG, speaker “Women of TUM” This is the first time I have ever taken part in an international speakers’ seminar so when I arrived in Munich I had lots of questions on my mind. And I took lots of answers and new ideas back with me to China. The program for this seminar began with a classical concert and an alumni celebration. President Herrmann held an excellent speech from the point of view of both content and rhetoric. What impressed me most was the term “TUM family”, since the participants ranged from freshers to alumni from all academic years up to the Golden Graduation and Golden Doctorate generations. The harmonious strains of the concert stayed with us in the days that followed. Thanks to our common connections with the TUM, we speakers from different countries and diverse cultural backgrounds had no difficulty in conversing with one another on topics of mutual interest despite the age gaps. We are very proud that TUM has been awarded the status of an Excellence University, are delighted with the expansion of the alumni network, and we look forward to the ongoing networking opportunities opened up by such projects as the “Juniors meet seniors”, “TUM Mentoring”, “Promoting careers”, for example.
The speakers’ seminar covered numerous talks, systematic discussions and summaries, and we went to several TUM events. Thanks go to Alumni & Career for the enjoyable and successful seminar. All participants went home with lots of new impressions and useful information for the further development of the TUM network. We are also taking the many impressions of the attractive TUM and the beautiful city of Munich back home with us. There is a German carol called “Süßer die Glocken nie klingen“. We say: the melody sounds particularly lovely in the weeks just before Christmas, and we seminar participants from all over the world feel as if we have been back home again at the TUM...

Each talk on the mentioned activities was greeted with enthusiastic applause. Every presentation was naturally followed by lots of questions, mostly connected with globalisation, interdisciplinarity or systematization. The subsequent discussions were inspiring
and provided much food for thought. Everyone knows how beneficial it is to debate a talk while it is still fresh in people’s minds, adding to it with aspects relating to the situation in their own particular country, comparing notes and collecting feedback from the other people present. The ideas and proposals were so stimulating that almost every discussion exceeded the allotted time and extended into the breaks.
A successful team: International alumni committed to the TUM-Network.
Alumni emails from crisis-torn regions Tunisia 18-01-2011
“The security situation is improving every day. We are sad that people have died but we are happy and proud to be fighting for freedom and democracy.”
Australia 18-01-2011
“We are all safe and well. Due to the fact that South East Queensland is still quite sparsely populated, the number of lives lost is relatively low compared with what’s happening in Brazil.“
Brazil 24-01-2011
“The situation is quite bad. We lost more than 650 people due to the incident. The cities involved in the tragedy will demand 2 to 5 years to recover its original economical and social structure.”
Egypt 31-01-2011
“We will pass this situation, I am sure about that. Egypt, it is a big, strong and also one of the important countries in the world, and does not deserve this position and this condition.”
Outlook 2011 . More and more cross-border alumni programs By Annette Marquard-Mois
Every year in January, when we discuss current programs and forthcoming events, we here at TUM realize to our delight that the commitment on the part of our international TUM alumni is tremendous. Their willingness to do voluntary work, to support young students, to organize network meetings and even experts’ seminars for alumni (thanks again to Alejandro Tieck in Colombia and thanks to Ahmed Legrouri in Morocco!), to act as mentors – all this shows us that networking isn’t just an empty word as far as our alumni are concerned.
September and in Shanghai on 29 September. In this context, may we request all alumni in China to kindly update their email addresses on www.tum.de/alumni/plattform, so we can send you our invitation to the alumni get-togethers in Peking and Shanghai. As you can see, we have an interesting year ahead of us! Kindest regards from Munich on behalf of TUM Alumni & Career
With your help, the “Juniors meet Seniors” program is to be expanded in 2011. It would be helpful to have alumni acting as contact persons in all cities where TUM students study as part of the TUM exchange programs. In collaboration with the Faculty of Architecture, the TUM network already offers students of architecture some assistance while they are still settling into their year abroad. The TUM Mentoring program is another possibility for alumni to support undergraduates. The number of international tandems is continually on the increase, depending on the students’ needs. You are invited to put your name down as a mentor or, if you are a student, to take advantage of this program and benefit from the support provided by an alumnus or an alumna for the space of one year. And don’t forget about the TUM Career Week, where you can get careers support and helpful information twice a year. Benefit from the wide choice of services available for students and alumni! We also wish to draw your attention to our “Alumni open doors for alumni” program designed to boost the regional TUM alumni networks worldwide. Why not open the doors for TUM alumni in your area and invite them to visit your company? This will enable you to meet some interesting people with whom you have at least one thing in common: student life at Technische Universität München. Last but not least, the third TUM alumni journey to China accompanied by Vice-President Liqiu Meng is scheduled for the month of September. The party will meet Chinese alumni in Peking on 22

News .
By the end of their first year at the TUM college, 14 pupils had all the evidence they needed to convince them that school is more than just imparting knowledge and skills. Since the academic year 2009 / 10, promising pupils of Otto von Taube Grammar School / Gauting who are interested in science or technical subjects are being taught in collaboration with the TUM. Parallel to their normal lessons they spend one day a week attending scientific lectures, seminars and research projects at TUM. The last few weeks of the first TUM college year were spent doing work experience abroad. England, Canada and the USA were the destinations. Thanks to the extremely committed support provided by our alumna Margret Ellwanger (TUM Network USA), 7 pupils found places at the Bright Young University in Provo, Utah. The youngsters were enthusiastic about the warmth with which they were welcomed into the host families, who each had some connection with the university, and the personal impressions they had as interns in the various institutes for Mathematics, Astronomy, Chemistry and Physics. This year, fourteen more pupils of Otto von Taube Grammar School (11th grade) are looking for work experience lasting at least 3 weeks in an English-speaking country as part of their participation in the TUM college (www.tumkolleg.ovtg.de). Could you offer for a senior pupil an internship from 4 to 31 July 2011?
Would you be willing to have a pupil stay with you in your home for the duration of his/her work experience? Dr. Moehringer, who is responsible for the TUM college, will be pleased to give you any further details required.

“I have gained an experience for life that would hardly have been possible anywhere else” – Internship for senior pupils abroad
In the photographic competition launched by the TUM International Office in 2010, TUM exchange students were asked to submit special photos of their host city, Munich. A jury consisting of representatives of the International Office, the Corporate Communications Center, AstA and the Student’s Union selected the best 23 images and they were then put on display throughout the summer of 2010, after which the students themselves selected 12 photos to appear in the 2011 IO calendar and voted who should be awarded the first
Wanted: Jobs and internships for TUM students Students often have trouble finding suitable work experience. TUM student Dorothée Becker has written to us and asked for some networking assistance: “I am currently doing a Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition Science and am due to graduate in the summer of 2011. From October / November 2011 onwards I would like to do a six month internship in a food company so as to have some practical experience in preparation for my Master’s degree (Nutrition Science, Food Techno-logy or Biotechnology). My wish is to go to Great Britain, Ireland or Scandinavia. Perhaps there are alumni who might be able to help.“ Finding appropriate internships abroad without any connections and a good network is, in fact, a difficult task. Could you possibly arrange an internship in your company for Dorothée? Are there any possibilities for internships in your company in other fields? Could you provide any useful information on career websites or contacts in your country? Please let us know. tact:
