Tumwater A Place to Live, Work, and Play

Everyone looks forward to the arrival of summer, which brings warmer weather and a chance to get outside and enjoy the great community that we live in. It’s a busy couple of months that we look forward to all year long. Summer is a busy time at Tumwater Parks and Recreation as well. City parks are full of activity with sports and games, children at playgrounds, shelter rentals, trail users and people enjoying access to the Deschutes River. Your City recreation programs are busy with adult fitness classes, music instruction, golf lessons, senior activities and much, much more. We are also proud to offer many opportunities for our community’s youth. Our camps serve over 1,000 youth and teens each summer with programs like our Day Camp for ages 6-11, Tumwater Trippin’ teen camp for ages 12-17, and STEM camps for ages 6-12. Tumwater also hosts several free family-oriented events throughout the summer. Independence Day in Tumwater can’t be missed – it’s the biggest and best 4th of July celebration in the South Sound. Each year, over 20,000 community members come together to celebrate the 4th of July with us. The day starts with a 4-mile fun run/walk through our golf course, followed by our annual Independence Day Parade. The Artesian Family Festival and Thunder Valley Fireworks Show ends the evening with a bang. The fun continues on Friday evenings in August when we host our Screen on the Green outdoor cinema at Tumwater Valley Golf Course. Both of these events are free, thanks to the support of our generous local sponsors. The 21 and over crowd is invited to celebrate Tumwater’s brewing history at the Tumwater Artesian Brewfest on Saturday, August 17 at Tumwater Valley Golf Course. See more details on page 21 of this brochure. Whether you’re enjoying one of our parks, programs or events we hope to play a part in your summer this year! Harbor Mice Exposure to Sailing Class This class offers young children a fun introduction to water activities. While sailing concepts are introduced, the focus is more about having fun on boats in the water, rather than learning how to sail. The class provides a fun and safe environment to get young children excited about water activities and sailing. Students come away with an enthusiasm for sailing, and are excited to take sailing courses when they are old enough. This class is not for youth who are fearful of water or who cannot swim. There is no swim test, but it is strongly suggested students have taken a swim class and/or can swim. Students must also be able to use the restroom by themselves.

However, if your sailor is rusty, or hasn’t sailed in a while and would like to start fresh, this course would also be ideal. Sailors may have to take this course a couple times before they are ready for Opti 2. Instructors will inform parents what class to take next. Students must be able to swim and pass a simple swim/capsize test.

HISTORICAL HOUSES Brewmaster's House (formerly known as the Henderson House) The Brewmaster’s House (formerly known as the Henderson House) was built in 1905 for William and Louise Naumann. Mr. Naumann was a brewmaster at the Olympia brewery just across the river. Considered quite modern for its day, the house boasted hot and cold running water, a coal-fired boiler, and electric lights in each room. The design of the home was largely inspired by the Victorian age, but was much less elaborate than earlier Queen Anne examples. The exterior of the home had changed over the years, but it was restored to its original appearance after the City of Tumwater acquired the house in 1977. The interior changed very little and provides a wonderful look at how Tumwater residents lived in the early 1900s. Interpretive signs give the visitor a thorough history of the house and its various owners. The Brewmaster’s House will be open on the following dates from 1:00 to 4:00pm: Sunday, June 2 | Sunday, July 7 | Sunday, August 11

For more information, please contact: Karen L. Johnson, Curator, Schmidt House Olympia Tumwater Foundation | PO Box 4098 | Tumwater WA 98501 (360) 890-2299 | karen@olytumfoundation.org www.olytumfoundation.org

Crosby House Come visit the Crosby House Museum, Tumwater's oldest historic home, located across from the Brewmaster's House in Tumwater's Historic District at 702 Deschutes Way SW. This charming 1860 house was built by Bing Crosby's grandfather, Nathaniel, for his new bride, Cordelia Smith. Now owned by the City of Tumwater, it is managed by Olympia Chapter #4, Daughters of the Pioneers of Washington who have completely furnished the house with period pieces. A delightful addition is a 1"-scale, fully furnished miniature replica of the Crosby House. The Crosby House is open most Sundays, April through October, 1:00 to 4:00pm. Tours available any time of year upon request.
