Tumwater A Place to Live, Work, and Play

Winter brings us days that are darker, colder and shorter. It’s easy to stay inside, be less active and content to wait for spring to arrive. We say, get out and recreate! It’s good for you both mentally and physically, and all of your friends and family can do it with you. Take the kids, your spouse, a friend or the dog – everyone feels better after getting outside and enjoying the beauty of what our City has to offer. Don’t be content to watch the winter go by from your couch - get outside and enjoy Tumwater parks, trails, and programs - you’ll be glad you did! Tumwater Parks and Recreation offers a variety of programs for residents of all ages. Try out our gymnastics classes offered for ages 3-10 or introduce your kids to the benefits of yoga. Students in grades 2-12 are invited to hang out with the Tumwater Youth Program on select Friday evenings throughout the school year. And though winter is still upon us, come January it's already time to register your youngsters (kindergarten through fifth grade) for Tumwater's spring baseball league. Kids don't get to have all the fun, though! Seniors can enjoy a delicious lunch while visiting with friends or try one of the many free activities offered at the Old Town Center. Play an instrument or want to learn? Take a guitar class, ukulele lessons, or join the Community Orchestra! Beginning or seasoned golfers can hone their skills while taking advantage of the great rates at the Tumwater Valley Golf Club. Plenty of fun to go around! If you’re looking for an event the whole family will enjoy, join us for the 17th Annual Tumwater Christmas Tree Lighting Festival on Saturday, December 14 at the Tumwater Fire Station and City Hall. The Tree Lighting includes school choir performances as well as cookie decorating, and more. It’s free fun for all ages. The festival ends with Mayor Kmet lighting the Christmas tree and Santa’s arrival on an antique fire truck. We at Tumwater Parks and Recreation are pleased to provide recreation opportunities that will help brighten your day and enrich your life. Stay connected with Tumwater Parks and Recreation by contacting us to be added to our email list or follow the City of Tumwater on Facebook. HISTORIC HOMES Brewmaster's House (formerly Henderson House) The Brewmaster’s House was built in 1905 for William and Louise Naumann. Mr. Naumann was a brewmaster at the Olympia brewery just across the river. Considered quite modern for its day, the house boasted hot and cold running water, a coal-fired boiler, and electric lights in each room. The design of the home was largely inspired by the Victorian age, but was much less elaborate than earlier Queen Anne examples. The exterior of the home had changed over the years, but it was restored to its original appearance after the City of Tumwater acquired the house in 1977. The interior changed very little and provides a wonderful look at how Tumwater residents lived in the early 1900s. Interpretive signs give the visitor a thorough history of the house and its various owners. The Brewmaster’s House is not open for public visits during the winter season. However, tours may be available upon request.

For more information, please contact: Karen L. Johnson, Curator, Schmidt House Olympia Tumwater Foundation | PO Box 4098 | Tumwater WA 98501 (360) 890-2299 | karen@olytumfoundation.org | www.olytumfoundation.org

Crosby House Come visit the Crosby House Museum, Tumwater's oldest historic home, located across from the Brewmaster's House in Tumwater's Historic District at 702 Deschutes Way SW. This charming 1860 house was built by Bing Crosby's grandfather, Nathaniel, for his new bride, Cordelia Smith. Now owned by the City of Tumwater, it is managed by Olympia Chapter #4, Daughters of the Pioneers of Washington who have completely furnished the house with period pieces. A delightful addition is a 1"-scale, fully furnished miniature replica of the Crosby House. Crosby House is not open for public visits during the winter season. However, tours are available upon request.
