one purpose. to serve.

Reviewing the lists of our donors from the past year, it is remarkable to see how many people Hamot Health Foundation brings together. They come from all walks of life. They hail from communities across our service region and beyond. They represent a variety of nationalities. Yet they share ONE PURPOSE that bonds them together: belief in the mission of UPMC Hamot. Our supporters are people who understand the value of accessible, quality health care. They have compassion for the plight of the medically underserved. They can envision a healthy and vibrant community. And they are wholly committed to doing what they can to make it a reality. Hamot Health Foundation’s collective support of the UPMC Hamot mission enables our nurses and staff to obtain specialized training and earn advanced degrees. It helps the medical center to continually offer patients the most advanced technologies. It supports new programs and services to meet specific needs within our community. And it reaches out to the underprivileged, providing opportunities to improve health, education, and the quality of life. ONE PURPOSE unites UPMC Hamot employees under the leadership of our board and UPMC Hamot President, Jim Fiorenzo. ONE PURPOSE also unites the diverse group of Hamot Health Foundation supporters who collectively have an enormous effect on the welfare of our patients and our community. I thank you all for sharing your commitment. ONE PURPOSE continues to make a difference for us all. Sincerely,

Ann Tredway, President and Chief Development Officer, Hamot Health Foundation

Garrett A. Fuhrman, Chairman, Hamot Health Foundation

ensuring the most advanced patient care.

Isolation room. With the emergence of highly infectious diseases such as Ebola and MERS, UPMC has undertaken developing treatment facilities to ensure protection of both patients and providers, designating UPMC Hamot and UPMC Presbyterian as strategic care sites. In turn, UPMC Hamot has created a designated isolation room in the former pediatrics wing of 6 Main with the support of funding from the Foundation. This special environment features a large anterior area where staff can undertake contamination prevention measures, as well as a negative airflow room to further ensure safety from microbial infection. “This investment enables us to provide care safely and securely in accordance with our mission, and in keeping with our commitment to stringent infection control measures throughout the medical center,” said Chief Nursing Officer Jim Donnelly. “We are ahead of the game, prepared for any eventuality, and dedicated to our mission of quality and safety.” NICVIEW. Earlier this year, UPMC Hamot introduced NICVIEW in its Neonatology Unit, a password-protected webcam system enabling parents and family members to have a virtual connection to their newborns. Presently, the technology is used more than 5000 times per month, including visits by family members from 20 different states across the nation. “NICVIEW is having a huge impact on parents and families, keeping them connected and decreasing stress and anxiety,” said Emily Hirsch, director of the UPMC Hamot Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. “Without the financial support of the Foundation, it’s likely that we would not have this incredible service. That’s how important their help has been.”

Breast tomosynthesis. Digital breast tomosynthesis is an incredible advancement in breast imaging. This technology greatly improves breast cancer detection rates, particularly when invasive cancer is involved, and also reduces the number of unnecessary biopsies, improves detection of multiple tumors, and reduces the percent of patient recalls. “This cutting-edge technology is currently only available in our community at UPMC Hamot thanks to the generosity of our Corporators and Hamot Health Foundation,” said Chief of Women’s Imaging, Joseph Chan, MD. “The women of Erie deserve the best, and we have it here at UPMC Hamot Women’s Imaging.”

“When parents can’t be there, NICVIEW offers the next best thing — a virtual connection.” Emily Hirsch, director, UPMC Hamot Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

creating programs for emerging needs.

TCAPP. “Patients often need more support at the ends of their lives than insurance will cover,” said LuAnne MacIsaac, executive director of Great Lakes Hospice. “Fortunately, the Foundation is there for these people with philanthropic support and guidance … they’re an integral part of our team.” The Transitional Care Pilot Program (TCAPP) at Great Lakes Hospice provides guidance and care planning for seriously or chronically ill patients who may or may not qualify for home health care, and who are not eligible for hospice care. TCAPP reaches very ill patients, providing the support they need to identify and clarify the goals of their care while reducing hospital readmissions and Emergency Department visits. TCAPP is funded through the generosity of Hamot Health Foundation. Hamot Health Foundation 5th Annual Gala. Funds generated from the Foundation’s 5th Annual Gala are being applied to meet urgent health care needs in our community. Nearly 500 guests attended the highly successful event that honored past board chairs. These leaders were instrumental in shaping the level of care that we have in our region.

educational opportunities to enhance our team.

Nursing scholarships. “Nursing students are perennial benefactors of the Foundation,” said Ann Tredway, president of Hamot Health Foundation. “The value of this financial support is evidenced in the outstanding qualifications of the UPMC Hamot nursing staff, which, in turn, is reflected in our patient outcomes and satisfaction ratings.” This year, students enrolled in RN programs and nurses enrolled in continuing education programs received a total of $16,000 through several different funds established through the Foundation. The passion of those who wish to become nurses is matched by the generosity of those who support them. John Malone Legacy of Leadership Fund. Established two years ago, the John Malone Legacy of Leadership Fund supports education, research, and fellowship opportunities not only for medical and nursing staff, but also for nonclinical managers. For Kristen Grande, UPMC Hamot patient safety specialist and risk manager, the financial support is making an advanced online business degree possible. “I’m so thankful for the fund,” she says. “There was really no other avenue of financial assistance available for me to pursue an MBA degree. I love UPMC Hamot, and this degree is something that will advance my career and help me continue to grow.”

Margaret E. Brown Endowment. “This fund is incredibly valuable in defraying the costs of continuing education for our nurses and, at the same time, ensuring the highest quality patient care,” said Robin Melvin, UPMC Hamot Magnet project coordinator. “Thirty-six percent of our nurses are specialty certified, and nearly 60 percent hold bachelors or higher degrees. These are very high numbers, and they are a direct result of the accessibility of continuing education and the generosity of the Foundation and the Margaret E. Brown Endowment.”

“Investing in our team and improving patient outcomes is at the core of what we do.” Ann Tredway, president and chief development officer, Hamot Health Foundation

investing in our communities.

Uncompensated Care. Patients without medical prescription coverage, or those with unaffordable copayments, may be discharged from the hospital without the means of acquiring necessary medications. This desperate situation is now alleviated for qualifying patients through the Foundation-funded Patient Prescription Program. The Foundation provides medication vouchers good for a five-day supply of a required prescription at Bayside Pharmacy and Rite Aid. In addition, the Foundation also supports such programs as Parkinson’s Partners, Wayne Primary Care, the Second Harvest Food Bank’s Produce Express, and other organizations dedicated to helping our poor and medically underserved.

EmergyCare EMS Camp. This year, more than 30 underprivileged students will be given the opportunity to experience hands-on emergency medicine techniques and the possibility of making health care a career choice as part of EmergyCare’s annual EMS Camp. Many of these students will go on to choose careers in emergency medicine thanks to this invaluable hands-on experience supported by the Foundation. The Next Generation Fund is the financial resource for this important program. Club Fit. Club Fit is now in its fourth year and more than 100 students from East and Strong Vincent high schools have participated. “We know by our outcomes that we’re improving fitness,” said Mary Jean Taylor, director of university wellness at Gannon University and leader of Club Fit. “What’s equally impressive is the camaraderie that evolves. The girls know that this is their club. Many say they joined because they wanted to be a part of something where they feel they can belong.” The Foundation has been the major supporter of Club Fit since the program began. Suzanne and William Conner Lobby and Healing Garden. The final stones will be laid in the walkway that will connect the UPMC Hamot Medical Staff and UPMC Hamot Aid Society Healing Garden with the Suzanne and William Conner lobby, a literal and figurative connection that represents the emotional and physical healing that occurs at UPMC Hamot. “This addition is a haven for our families and staff. It’s also tangible evidence of the power of collaboration, philanthropy and generosity,” said Richard W. Long, MD, UPMC Hamot vice president of medical affairs. UPMC Hamot President Jim Fiorenzo notes that first impressions are lasting impressions, and the new lobby and garden combine to reflect the medical center’s leadership role in providing an unprecedented level of care in our region. William and Suzanne Conner, the UPMC Hamot medical staff, and UPMC Hamot Aid Society were major contributors to this project, and were joined in support by individuals from UPMC Hamot and throughout the community.
