How did two weeks become a year? The idea for this edition came from a snap, with something like “haha, this is still hanging here”, and a picture of the poster that was mounted up a year ago. One can easily laugh at it, before suddenly realizing its importance. There is something post-apocalyptic about the whole thing. You wander around, spotting traces of things that have suddenly disappeared. You keep your distance to the ones you meet. Most unknown faces are veiled behind a mask. It really feels like we are living in a historical event. In a few years we can say “when I was young!” and talk about our Covid days. Because it will end at one point, even if the end is far away. If not, we can at least talk about how things were before, and that they were all better days.

occur every year. In TT-taboo, we also look into the future, as we write about children, abortion and sterilisation. Time passes, and the future is always here. The tempo has, indeed, felt rather odd lately. For me, it feels as if there aren’t enough hours in a day, and they disappear faster than I can think about them. But when I think, and look back, it seems that what happened ages ago, was last week. And sometimes we think it has been two weeks – when it, in fact, was a whole year.

This edition has a lot of content concerning history and time. What our work habits are like, and how we spend time, is very relevant now, and “student fashion” shows how our apparel choices have changed through the decades. The 8th of March demonstration has a historical reverberance, and we talk about the General Assembly and Student Parliament elections, happenings that

Halleujah, campus is open again! Long, monotonous days stuck in your home office can finally be replaced with happy days on NMBU premises. Tuntreet met up with six students at Sørhellinga and asked them a few questions: 1. 2. 3.

With three words: what is it like to be back in the reading halls? Favourite reading spot? Work quality here vs at home?

Ole Marius Grønbekk and Sara Thu, Biology 1. Kinda great, different and long awaited. 2. Sør 3. More effective here

Mariana Cora, Aquatic Food Production 1. Good, important and refreshing 2. Libraries 3. Much better here

Marius Engan, Commerce/Business studies (in Copenhagen, just visiting) 1. Lovely, down-to-earth, and productive 2. Wide window sills 3. Much better quality

Magnus Eng, Forest studies 1. It is nice. 2. Skogbrukersalen 3. I’d like to think I work better here, even though that’s most likely not true.

STUDY HABITS Elina Turbiná Journalist

Pauline Hovland Illustrator

Imagine yourself getting on a rollercoaster. You fasten the seatbelt, breathe in deeply, and wait for the journey to begin. And it does - it goes super-fast, so fast you can barely catch up with your own sensations. It goes up, down, upside-down, twists and turns so you do not notice what is going on. This is how many of us have been feeling throughout this semester, having to constantly change our routines to keep up with the restrictions. So, what is going on with our study habits, really?

6

Edition 03 Volume 76

TUNTREET We turned to the current students of NMBU for answers. 230 people took our survey, representing each faculty and almost every study year. Out of these students, only one person was taking a single course for the semester, while the majority took three or more courses. 66% have all their courses online, 26% have a mixed bag, and the remaining 8% are lucky enough to have in-person courses.

real-time interaction with the class and the lecturer, as well as having structure for an otherwise hectic day. Basically, trying to get some normalcy back into one’s life. However, there is still 30% of people enjoying the pre-recorded lectures. This is explained by the flexibility for the students with a tight schedule, increased quality of the lecture contents, as well as the possibility to watch these videos at one’s own pace.

How many courses are you taking this semester? 230 replies

“This meeting is being recorded” NMBU does not have a set way of conducting digital teaching, therefore, not every meeting is being recorded. 35% have only some of their lectures recorded, and 13% have no recording of the real-time lectures at all. This variability could be attributed to the university following the privacy regulations to protect identities of students. It is not a huge issue, however, since only 10% watch these Zoom meetings later in their own time. We cannot predict the difference in numbers if all lectures were recorded but the students would surely find it helpful to have different options available.

person pulling all-nighters regularly. 94 people doze off at around midnight, and their general reasoning for a late end to the day is watching TV, staying on social media, hanging out with friends/significant others, as well as overthinking, stress and “existential dread”. Many mentioned being a “B-menneske” aka a night owl, while others also point out that late hours are their “me-time” to unwind and focus on themselves. When do you usually wake up? 230 replies

When do you usually go to sleep? 230 replies

Do you prefer having pre-recorded lectures as opposed to real-time lectures? 230 replies

To pre-record or not to pre-record? Having variety in the presentation of the course material is a significant factor for the study experience. More than 60% of all respondents have courses with pre-recorded lectures, and almost 70% say that it is not their preferred type of lectures. The most common explanation as to why live lectures are favored over pre-recorded ones is the Do you have pre-recorded lectures available on Canvas (or other platforms)? 229 replies

Do you watch lectures live? 200 replies

Extra-curriculars Surprisingly, more than a half of respondents are still actively engaged in extra-curricular activities. The 14% that have dropped theirs, blame it on Covid (shocking). Answers also include stress, “too much school to keep up with” and a “knee operation” -we hope you have recovered well, dear respondent!

Do you have extra-curricular activities you participate in (choirs, organisations, sports teams or other hobbies)? 230 replies

Sleeping patterns Despite the different course executions, the sleeping patterns have been quite stable across students, with only nine people having sleep-in days and just one Edition 03 Volume 76

socialization redirects their attention to studies. One of the respondents has traveled around Norway doing all sorts of sports activities, balancing it out with studying during the evenings. We are jealous! How stressed have you been feeling because of your school/life balance? (1- not stressed at all, 3,- neutral, 5- very stressed) 230 replies

Do you study on the weekends? 230 replies

Study space When asked about the preferred place to study, the answers were unsurprisingly leaning towards the campus. However, some seemed to be fine with varying between university, home, and other spaces. There surely are students comfortable with working from home too, although there are not many of them. Those who prefer studying at university were struggling a lot during the campus shutdown. Many noted being more distracted and less productive, missing the needed motivation in the comfort of one’s own home. And, of course, people missed the printers.

Where do you prefer to work? 230 replies

Have you thought of changing your workload? 230 replies

Overall, most people seem to be quite stressed about their school/life balance. But, hey, the rollercoaster ride finishes at some point! Sliding you back into a comfortable speed with a greater appreciation for being able to put your feet on the ground. Let us hope this feeling blesses us soon enough. How satisfied are you overall with your current situation? (1- dissatisfied, 3- neutral/hard to say, 5-very satisfied) 230 replies

Studying from home has not been all terrible, as many have gotten the hang of it. Some students had decided to work from home even before the school shut down this semester, as the lack of social life did not justify them being on campus. Others got unexpected benefits from studying at home, noting that this exact lack of 8

TUNTREET PRESENTS: STUDENT FASHION

Spring is approaching fast, which means that it is finally time for all you fashionistas to get out of your winter jackets and express your inner world through clothing. Tuntreet’s own Fashion Board (that is definitely a real thing and has existed for a while) has decided to give you some inspiration for your fresh spring wardrobe by acquainting you with the great stylish students of the past. Treat it as an aesthetic moodboard if you will. Elina Turbiná Journalist Simen Walbækken Tangen Photographer Selma Vestby Model Jon Eivin Kivle Model

Smart and/or casual Starting off strong, we have the casual yet preppy look. Suited and ready to solve important issues with a pipe in your mouth and a fancy hat on your smart head. This is a timeless look for a true gentleman. You can also tone it down with a cozy cardigan and socks with a fun pattern. Finish your outfit with a pair of sunglasses. Cool, sophisticated and, dare we say, sexy?

Groovy grooming A good outfit is nothing without good grooming. Since the 70s are in style again, why don’t you be the one to bring back the bakkebaarden (that’s ‘sideburns’ in Dutch)? Or a wild ‘stache? When styled properly (we recommend flared pants and a knit vest over a shirt) you own the discotheque, even if that discotheque is in your 8 m2 room.

And here we have the Tuntreet legend Ole Bjerke sporting a beautiful balance of a summer suit and a sandal-sock combo. Tuntreet Fashion Board approves. Edition 03 Volume 76

Smokin’ Hot We do not encourage you to take up smoking, however, we cannot look past the fact that a cigarette can elevate your look even more than any funky hairstyle would. Just look at this handsome lad in a

striped shirt! With such a man you are in for a treat in the form of a spontaneous lecture about IPAs and the cinematography of Blade Runner 2049. Maybe even a cheeky poem reading incoming? We know you secretly love those!

Tortured Artists Despite NMBU being full of STEMs*, we are aware that there are plenty of students expressing themselves through art. And we love it! The Fashion Board recommends not shying away from showing your artistic side. The white-boy-with-anacoustic-guitar trend, for instance, will never go out of style. Utilize it, preferably with a dreamy, melancholic gaze. [Insert a “Here’s Wonderwall joke here”] *Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics students

She Could Have Dropped Her Croissant Staying on the topic of stripes, a good French tee with a babushka headscarf (appropriated by A$AP Rocky a couple of years ago for the benefit of all slavaboos) can bring out the mysteriousness of your presence. Is she from Paris or has she just begun using Duolingo? We may never know.

Noughty or Nice Now, we have seen enough of sophistication at NMBU. Maybe this spring you need a reinvention? A bit of the tra$hy and fla$hy feel to an otherwise boring every day? Well, our fellow students got you here as well! Whether it is the white gangstaboi feel to spice up your guttastemning or layers upon layers of neon and chunky belt goodness - we see you!

Express Yourself This spring is a great chance to bloom and step out of your comfort zone. Step out towards a massive disco ball graffiti with your small disco ball in hand. Drain your innocent hair in some got2b hairgluegel and sing to Basshunter’s Now You’re Gone. Curl your hair and wear a fancy ball gown. Walk your tweed jacket and dress pants along the trashcans. It is no time like right now to truly express yourself! Have fun!

Andreas… Despite Andreas Wahl not being an NMBU student, the Fashion Board could not help but include him into this moodboard as his 2012 look, captured for Tuntreet almost a decade ago, exemplifies the nerdy-but-cute aesthetic that some of you could be acing this spring. Just do not overdo it with those high-top 2mm sole sneakers he used to love in 2010s. We love you here at the Fashion Board, Andreas. Again, this is not just one single person writing this article.

No comment. The shoes speak for themselves.

GA, The General Assembly of Studentsamfunnet in Ås, is held once every semester for the members of Studentsamfunnet. Here, the various organizations present reports, budgets and accounts. Discussions and amendments will be brought up, and it is an arena where members can raise and present cases and issues. Digital solution Due to restrictions related to the pandemic, this semester’s General Assembly will be digital. The members of Samfunnet will receive an e-mail with a zoom link, as well as information on how everything will be done. There will also be information about speeches, how to take the word and other formalities. Issues The case documents can be found at Samfunnet’s web site. This spring, the organizations will present their reports and accounts for 2020, various positions are up for election, and there is only one case that has been sent in by the deadline. This is the presentation of the emissions accounts Samfunnet was commissioned to make after the General Assembly in the autumn of 2019. Available positions During this GA there are 17 positions up for election. In the Board of Samfunnet a new leader, event leader and financial leader must be selected. In the Business Committee they must select a new Career Day manager, sponsor manager and event manager. Tuntreet needs an editor, the Election Committee needs two new representatives

12

and a new student representative for the House and Finance Board is to be selected. Also, a brand new UKEboard must be chosen! This includes UKEmanager, revue manager, event manager, serving manager, head of administration, head of marketing and house manager (former sales manager). You can read about what the current representatives think about their positions, and what they are all about, in the previous edition of Tuntreet. The representatives running for election will present themselves digitally, and those who have submitted their candidacy in advance can already be read about in the candidacy booklet. If you or someone you know would like to run for election, it’s not too late! You can still announce that you would like to run and join the election. Why participate? GA gives you an insight on what the different organizations do, what kind of plans and visions they have, and an overview of how Samfunnet is run. Through your presence, you can influence which direction Samfunnet should take, express your opinions, demand how things should be run, participate in the voting and perhaps run for election yourself?

8th of March 2021, a day of battle Ragne Kyllingstad Journalist

The International Women’s Day on March 8th has roots all the way back to 1910, and started as a campaign for women’s right to vote. Today, the International Women’s Day is a global day of commemoration. In Ås, it was marked with a demonstration and speech outside of Samfunnet. Women’s Day during a pandemic Soon, it is the one-year mark of Norway’s first lockdown. In Oslo, they had no other choice but to make this year’s March 8th celebration digital, but here in Ås, the day was marked with a physical demonstration and speeches. This day in March was particularly mild, and we were many who came to take part in the demonstration. Due to coronavirus infection control, there was no public event, and information on the demonstration was spread partly through word of mouth. Presumably because of this, the majority of the participants represented a student club.

14

Utgåve 03 Årgang 76

Simen Walbækken Tangen Photographer

Social Following tradition, Rødt Ås studentlag (a far-left political student club) together with Ås Feministiske studenter (Ås Students for Feminism) contributed with chanting and slogans throughout the whole demonstration. Since the very beginning, March 8th has been an important day in the socialist calendar. The International Women’s Day commenced from the initiative of women’s rights activist and socialist Clara Zetkin on an international women’s conference in Denmark, and the early phase of the Women’s Day was highly influenced by the socialist class conflict. Among other things, it was embraced by women in Petrograd (modern day St. Petersburg) who marched the streets on March 8th, 1917, and became a triggering cause for The Russian Revolution, and 80 years of communism in Russia. 8th March and the UN The parade in Ås started in front of ABC

Sofie Palmstrøm Translator

and marched around campus before ending up in front of Samfunnet. Pikekoret Ivar (the girls’ choir) also contributed with some entertainment. They sang an ode to the mother of our country, Gro Harlem Brundtland, with the song «Gro (Harlem Brundtland)». Brundtland became the prime minister of Norway for the first time in 1981, in the last part of what is called the “Women’s decade”. She was our first female prime minister. Four years earlier, the United Nations had embraced March 8th, and recognised it as an international day of celebration. The International Women’s Day was during the 1990’s once again a topic for high politics, with frequent globally engaging conferences. Violence against women was put on the agenda, and a goal to stop this problem was brought forward through the UN’s conference called Cairo Consensus in Egypt the year after. There, empowerment of girls and women was recognised as a

key factor in conducting a sustainable population development. Violence against women was also the focus in several of the paroles during this years Woman’s Day, both in Ås, Oslo and globally. The world wins with women The event coordinator for The International Woman’s Day in Ås 2021, Miranda Dærum, introduced the first speaker, prorector of research at NMBU, Siri Fjellheim. She focused on equality challenges in academia. Today, more women than men complete higher education, but still there are many more men in higher academic positions at all universities in Norway except from OsloMet. Worst of them all is NMBU. Female professors make up 26%, which is a decrease (!) from the year before. Throughout all of the 90’s and the early 2000’s, more global conferences established the woman’s important role in our world community. Malala Yousafzai reminded us that the battle was far from over in 2013. She emphasized the importance of girls’ right to education. One of the main paroles in this year’s digital celebration of March 8th in the capital, goes like this : «The world wins with education to all girls and women!». The battle is not over. A day of battle Like every year, this year’s Women’s Day is a day of battle. It reminds us of society’s daily struggle to maintain the rights we deserve. Education is one aspect. Another of the paroles is called : «Support Polish women’s fight for self-determined abortion» and looks to a country where equality is moving backwards. If you don’t hold on to your rights tightly, you can risk losing them

again. March 8th reminds us of just that. Afterwards, there was a speech from Mette Lea from Hunnkattene. She began with a toast to the women. The speech was about the women’s contribution during the coronavirus pandemic reflecting topics announced by the UN for March 8th, 2021. The UN chose to focus on : «women in leadership, achieving an equal future in a Covid-19 world» A day to celebrate The International Women’s Day is a day of celebration in addition to a day of battle. We celebrate how far we have come in the fight for a more equal world, and woman’s inevitable role in it. The women make up a completely necessary role at all fronts in fighting down this pandemic: as healthcare workers, innovators and leaders of society. It has become apparent that countries with governments dominated by women and countries with female state leaders, have the highest probability of handling the pandemic in the best way. It is finally a generally accepted fact that women actually make up half of the world society, and brings important perspectives to the negotiation tables all over the world. The International Women’s Day is over for now, but the fight continues as long as the paroles we walked behind are still prevalent. I close this article by writing down some of the paroles you could read at the demonstration in Ås in 2021.

SHOULD WE HAVE KIDS? Ingrid Åsbø Sondov Photographer

Oda Braar Wæge Illustrator

Vetle Rakkestad Translator

More than two years has passed since our prime minister Erna Solberg in her New Year Speech of 2019 stated that Norway is in need of more children. The fertility rate was then 1,53 newborns for each woman, and in 2020 it dropped further to 1,481. To equalize the uneven age distribution in our population, the government wants more young persons, including students, to become parents. Tuntreet has asked the students themselves, and midwife Karin Falk Jørgensen, if this is a good idea. First we talked to a woman with plentiful experience in watching young and insecure persons developing into secure adults practicing the parenting role. Karin Falk Jørgensen works at Ås’ health station for young people and students. She has been a midwife for 25 years and now works with sexual health and supports women in their pregnancies and after giving birth. She will be a good candidate to answer our question. She’s conflicted in her answer on whether more young adults, specifically students, should get children. Given that the woman wants to become a mother, there certainly are advantages to getting children early. A young body will in most cases handle a pregnancy better than older ones. Young people are often more solution-oriented and have perseverance, which come in handy. As students, some experience better results because they are forced to make use of the little time they have available in the most efficient way. As a student, you are often more flexible than in an eight to four job. Karin especially states her experience that students working on their PhDs have a wonderful time as new parents. They are in a situation with great flexibility, with a steady income.

There are also disadvantages. To many, studying is a time characterized by scarcity, with a lack of space, time and money. To get a child is a tough choice which will be demanding, she emphasizes. Students early in their studies might feel loneliness because others around them can’t relate to a life with children. Some students experience finding their chosen one while studying, but for many, it is also a time to play around. In addition, today’s women are focused on their careers. About 60% of the students at NMBU are women, and it is likely that the studies will be prioritized for many of them. Data from SSB published 11. «I’d rather prioritize studies.»

«I’m not ready for the responsibility at this time » «I want kids sometime the next 2-3 years.»

«No job, income or house» «Economic difficulties. Both of us would have to drop our studies, and work more»

«We are old enough to not need to perform abortion. Would have performed it two-three years ago.»

“I do not want children.””

On the question regarding the reason why students haven’t become parents yet, the most common answers are a wish to prioritize studies, economy and the lack of a permanent partner. Some say they don’t feel responsible enough to take care of a child, while others say they are currently trying to get children but haven’t been successful yet. The students also answer that giving up freedom and social life while studying is a tough choice. TT-TABOO Even though there were few answers to this question, the survey shows that in contradiction to the majority’s opinion that to get a child while studying would be problematic, the students that actually have children don’t feel the same way.

Very low degree Low degree Neither low or high High degree Very high degree

Amongst the people surveyed, it seems like there are both practical, emotional and political reasons to not get a child right now. Even though this survey is subject to few answers, it shows that students having children don’t feel that parenting is very problematic while studying. They might be lucky, or maybe this substantiates one of Karin Jørgensen’s points. As a parent you will grow into a role, and most situations are solvable.

Facilitation from several instances is needed for young women to be willing to give birth, Karin claims. When pregnant, you need support, advice and help, from both professionals, friends and family. You will get meetings with NAV, family doctor and the health station, and you will also get case processing and papers. Karin explains that several of the schemes are cumbersome and could have needed an upgrade. The same applies to universities, and their approach to students who are expecting a child. Regarding facilitation of studies, Jørgensen thinks that how your partner is, or how your paperwork skills are, should affect how hard it is to combine studies and children. The university needs a common attitude on how to meet students having children. In that way, the students also know what to expect from the university in their situation. The facilitation office at NMBU expresses that there are no numbers on how many applications there are for facilitation with the reason being pregnancy. Today, this responsibility is shared between the faculties, that facilitate the teaching, and the study department that facilitate exams. Both parts strive for flexibility for as long as possible with today’s resources. All applications for facilitation are treated individually with documentation as basis. Many are uncertain, and many need to get a lot in place before even considering having children. To others, it would be a step in the right direction. Finally, Karin explains that regardless of support schemes and politics, the most important thing when considering getting a child is that you and your partner would be a great team. To get a child is a project lasting at least 20 years, and it is a big decision to make. Greater decision than how much you should spend on syllabus, what kind of frozen pizza to choose or which artist you want the most for UKA.

TUNTREET

TT draws furbies Tuntreet illustrators, Oda and Pauline, are teaching YOU to draw! No previous knowledge or special equipment is needed, all you need is paper and a pencil. The goal is to open your eyes to the geometric world, this is also useful to more experienced artists. Our base is a so-called Furby, a stuffed animal you might have seen on Tiktok or on Cartoon Network 15 years ago. This is a simple character who can be boiled down to a couple of geometric figures, and it could just as well have been a bag of flour or a bird. When drawing, our eyes are the most valuable resource, and they are best exploited if we use them actively. It is definitely recommended to draw physical models, rather than photos or fantasy. Unfortunately, Tuntreet does not have the budget to supply every reader with their own Furby, so this picture is the model of this exercise. Oda Braar Wæge Illustrator

Pauline Hovland Illustrator

1. If you squint at the Furby, you leave out details and see only the figure’s most important features. Leave prejudice and ideas on what you think a Furby looks like. Then you will see that the animal resembles a column, or a weird thumb. Start by drawing the circle in the bottom of a cylinder and move on to the walls up to the lid. Then you draw a new circle, this is going to be the face.

2. Now we are going to define the face. It can be tempting to already add the mouth and other decor, but it is very important not to dive into such detail too soon. It is unfortunate when you add an exquisite detail, but the placement is all wrong. We have ourselves done this one too many times. Draw an equilateral triangle on the face circle. In every corner of the triangle, your draw an orb, the top two should be a little bigger. These are going to be the eyes. On the bottom circle, you draw a little arc across the circle along its surface, this is going to be the beak´s mouth.

TUNTREET

4 3

4.Lastly, you smack on two triangles on top of the figure. These are going to be ears. The feet are drawn as two circles, which you further divide into multiple circles. These are the toes. Look at that! Now you have the basic composition of a Furby. Finally, you can give it details such as eyelashes, fur and other titbits. If you want to, you can sketch some softer lines over the strict geometric shapes, now that you already have the basic shapes to guide you.

3. The next step is detailing the eyes. It is wise to start off by drawing the entire eyeball, not just the part that is visible on the surface. It is useful to draw a lot of circles on top of each other before you find the right shape. You can save the eraser for later. When you have found the appropriate circle, you draw arcs and divide it into four parts. In the crossing point you draw the iris and a pupil, ergo two circles. Across the iris you place an arc following the eye surface. Give it thickness, like a slice of cheese. This is now an eyelid.

5

5.If you want an extra challenge, draw your Furby from different angles. As Furby´s don’t follow the laws of physics, they are brilliant for practicing rotating shapes in space. Nothing is wrong! Make your Furby a cube, multiple columns or a pyramid. With simple geometric shapes, you can do practically anything.

Drawing realistically is about reducing what you see down to simple shapes. Seeing the world though geometry is beneficial, no matter what you draw, because you can grasp the three-dimensional shapes. Later on, you can use a marker to enhance the best lines. Lastly, you can erase the guidelines, or the sketch lines, if you want to. When drawing it is rarely a good idea to start out with the outline, and then place the details where you see fit. Forget the eraser, use your eyes and simply see what things are built from.

SiÅs´ parking fee

Environmental measure or exploitation of vulnerable students? Thea Samskott Translator

If you have recently looked for student housing or have dropped by Boligtorget to look at the new apartments in Skogveien, you might have noticed the little writing at the bottom “Parking: kr 100, - pr. Month from 01.07.2021”. Even if you pay, there is no guarantee you´ll ever get to park your car. To find out why this has happened I spoke to Astrid Lunde, chairman in SiÅs. The explanation turned out to be a complex mix of business economics and environmental politics.

The first question is such a matter is obviously: If we have to pay for parking, why not lower the rent? Even though maintenance of one parking lot is quite expensive, there are so few parking spots per apartment, the adjustment would 22 Edition 03 Volume 76

Hedda Jørgensen Journalist

mean under 30 kr less each month. The Student Parliament has established that the income from the parking fee is not only going to maintenance of the parking spaces, but also towards making it better for those who don’t have cars. Until now students without cars have paid for allowing people with cars to park in marked and maintained spots, and themselves having to put their bike in an old, overfilled bicycle rack. The income from the parking fee goes directly to a money pot that is going towards getting more new bicycle racks with roofs and maintenance of walkways and lights. Thus, the increasing profit is used to benefit students without cars.

Nathalie Genevieve Bjørneby Photographer

The second question is: Why aren’t I guaranteed a space when I pay to park? The reason why, is that to guarantee everyone paying for parking an actual spot would mean so much administrative work, SiÅs would have to spend money in salaries rather than benefiting the students. The cost of this would double the parking fee. When the choice was between the 100 kr for parking, or 200 kr to get a guaranteed spot, the decision fell on the first alternative because the board thought 200 kr was too much to ask. If the fee scares off some of the students, it could also be easier to find parking for those who really need a car.

Kristin Gilboe, car owner

Parking below Palisaden.

Finally, I ask: Why is the fee introduced now? And now it gets complicated. Cars are the main reason for pollution in Ås centre, and our politicians have decided that when building new central building complexes, the coverage should be no more than 10%. Meaning that when building student housing, there are only parking spots for every 10th resident. This goes for every student housing, and when Skogveien is finished, this has to be followed up. These last few years there have been more complaints about too few parking spots. As it is not allowed to make more parking spots, the solution is to make it less attractive to own a car.

Hopefully, few students wish to pay equivalent to two/three beers a month for a parking spot they are not using. As I don’t myself have a car, I spoke to Kristin Gilboe, who has a car outside her student housing, to find out how she feels about this. She relies on her car to get home during vacations. The alternative is two different trains, a bus and a boat, and to then be picked up. The fee does not scare her away, as she needs the car. The price is not too high either, but she disapproves and reacts to the timing.

If the fee scares off some of the student cars, it could also be easier to find parking for those who really need a car.

It arrives in the middle of the pandemic when students in many ways have been hit the hardest. Many pay for housing they don’t use, have lost their part time job, and simultaneously as the fee arrives we also get the annual increase in rent.

Hopefully, few students wish to pay equivalent to two/three beers a month for a parking spot they are not using.

registered more than there is room for, the lot behind Mølla and Eplehagen is almost always half-empty. Another motivation for introducing the parking fee, is finding out how many actually need parking. With today’s system, every resident can register as many cars as they like. This was introduced when many non-students filled the spots by the student housing. The solution then was allowing the tenants to register, to stop non-students from taking their spots.

The parking coverage at Pentagon is today over 35%. There is room for over every third student to park a car. Right now, there is a car registered on every second resident. Even though there are

Edition 03 Volume 76 23

TUNTREET The ambition with the parking fee is to support students with children, jobs or other reasons to keep a car by their student housing. If the fee does not lead to fewer parked cars, a solution is raising the fee. The pilot project with the fee is to be reevaluated in the Student Parliament in 2022. If we get fewer cars and the parking behind Mølla and Eplehagen becomes empty, the lot can be used to build two new apartment complexes for students. As SiÅs already owns these lots, this is cheaper than buying new lots. And when it is cheaper for SiÅs, it is cheaper for the students. In addition, this would keep the student dorms within the same area, and the student body wouldn’t have to be split into yet another student village.

Until now students without cars have paid for allowing people with cars to park in marked and maintained spots, and themselves having to put their bike in an old, overfilled bicycle rack.

The parking fee comes from the politicians´ environmental policies, an increasing number of students and a wish to do what is best for the students. At first glance it seems anti-student but wants to be the opposite. Here the car owners are the big losers, and the timing is bad. Hopefully, enough cars will disappear from the parking lots, so the car owners avoid extra fees and everybody can park their cars.

Monday, 8th of March, the new student parliament was held. This time, many topics, like the Women’s Day, a new semester model, grant of welfare funds and better learning environments were discussed. Women’s Day Monday March 8th this semester´s second student parliament was upon us. As it was the International Women´s Day, we opened with an speech on how our perspective subconsciously shapes our actions, from prorector Siri Fjellheim. One of her most important points was that these mindsets also exist among the students, which becomes apparent when the university has roughly the same amount of male and female lecturers, but of the 18 times the semester’s best lecturer has been chosen, the students have chosen 17 men and one woman. The speech ended with an encouragement to redefine your own perspective on what a good professor, lecturer and student is. New semester structure After this, work on a new semester structure was presented and opened for input. These suggestions were different versions of a more block-based structure with variations of some longer and some shorter blocks, to promote in-depth learning and project-based learning. Even though this means more post-exam parties, many were skeptical, and it was pointed out that this would affect learning in courses where some maturing over time is needed. Other input pointed out that it would be more difficult to take more or fewer classes in a period,

more difficult to retake exams and many were skeptical to how this affects exchange students. The new models will be used the autumn of 2023. Welfare funds grant The issue that needed the most time was granting of welfare. The student board started off with a proposal to fix two errors. 6000 NOK had been granted to Feminin & Fornem´s revue, but this is against regulations, so this sum was removed. The student association for geomatics, ATLAS, had originally not been granted anything, although everything with their application was in order, so it was decided to grant them 3200 NOK. The student big band entered a proposal to increase their support from 8800 NOK to 15000 NOK. This was on the grounds that they relied on funds for a conductor to keep the good quality and because of lost income due to lockdown and cancelled shows, leading to this year´s huge short coming. This was not approved. The veterinarians’ social club, VSF, had applied for 40 000 NOK in welfare, but were granted only 10 000 NOK in activity funds and wanted more. First, they proposed to change the time for assignment until the next Student Parliament

meeting, to have better time to rewrite their application, this was not approved. Afterwards they proposed changing their own activity funds from 10 000 NOK to 16 000 NOK which also was not approved. Lastly, they proposed moving 3 700 NOK from Teknikum’s activity funds, which was going to clementines and gingerbread men, to their own funds. This was not approved either. As this previous issue took so long, it was decided to move the following issues to the next student parliament: Resolution Declare climate crisis, Resolution – a diverse campus. Better learning environments Lastly, a discussion opened about bigger measures for better learning environments. This is a money pot of 3.6 million NOK that are going to be divided between two to three bigger projects to improve learning environment. Every faculty came forth with their proposals, and the recurring themes were more sockets, warmer/colder rooms and more outdoor furniture. Issues such as these were recommended sent to the premises department (eia@nmbu.no), as this is their responsibility. It was also proposed to build volleyball courts and other possibilities for active breaks. Edition 03 Volume 76

THE STUDENT BOARD

You can take part in shaping your student life! Celine Våga Translator

By: Tilde Birgitte Dalberg Studentrepresentantative in AU

During this spring’s Student Election we will elect representatives for the Student Parliament Board and female representatives for the University Board. If you would like to be a part of influencing tomorrow’s NMBU, there are no reason to not consider these positions. The deadline for applying is April 5th, and the Student Election is April 21th-28th. You might wonder what one actually does within these positions? Maybe also what the Student Parliament Board, University Board and the Faculty Board actually is and what they do? Let us explain:

The Student Board is the Student Democracy’s highest organization in between Student Parliament sessions. They maintain the daily operations of the Student Democracy and follow up on decisions decided by the Student Parliament. The Student Board is the case preparer for the Student Parliament, and consists of three members that work full time: One leader and two Student Board members. These three members divide responsibilities and tasks between them. The leader is in charge of everything strategical and represents the NMBUstudents up against the top management of the University. The other two members work on everything organizational within the organization and educational political cases. They also work closely with people within the organization who have special duties to ensure proper training and flow of information within the Student Democracy. Every member of the Student Board is elected by digital election (the Student Election) and joins July 1st 2021.

The University Board of NMBU is the superior decisionmaking body of NMBU and consists of an external board leader and board members, both internal from NMBU and external members. The University Board mainly work with strategy, economy, goal management, reporting and organization development on an overall level (studenttingets. valgnemnd@nmbu.no). The University Board has 7-8 meetings per year. Beyond this, it is recommended that one attends top-meetings and seminars directed by Kollegieforumet. Board members also have a duty to read the report from the Student Parliament and should be represented during Student Parliament meetings. Students that wish to run for election should have obtained board-experience (institute-boards, faculty-boards or similar) or committee work on a higher level (UFU/USU). The representatives are elected by digital election (Student Election) and joins July 1st 2021. The position is paid.

The Faculty Board is the faculties superior decision-making body and consists of scientific employees, external board members and two student representatives. They work with cases of strategic character and have about 4 meetings per year. Like the University Board there are gender quotas, where one elects women in springtime and men during autumn. The representatives of the Faculty Boards are elected by electronical election (Student Election) and joins July 1st 2021 and maintains the position for a year. The position is paid.

TT tests Anne Tove Græsdal Våge Journalist

Tord Kristian F. Andersen Journalist

Benjamin Alexander Faulkner Translator

When we were asked by Apias if we wanted to test their new charging cables, we replied “why not?”. Then we recieved two different cables, a lightning which fits an iPhone, and a USB-C which fits Android mobile phones in addition to other units. Please note: we had these chargers sent to us, and have not tried other cables than the ones that followed with the mobile phone. There are, most likely, other cables that match in purpose. What does this charger do, and why is it different from other chargers? This is a smart charger which, apparently, is better for the mobile battery, safer and more environmentally friendly. This is due to the charger’s ability to turn itself off when the mobile is fully charged. Whether this affects sustainability is a matter of some conjecture, but we agree that this should provide better quality to the battery even though the phone is old, and reduce risk of fire. Many of us charge our phones overnight and therefore overcharge the batteries – meaning they are charged for eight hours and not the recommended 1,5 hours. How is the test undertaken? The test was undertaken by replacing the usual charger with the one recieved from Apias, for a few weeks, to see if it works as intended. The iPhone belonged to Anne Tove, which has such a broken battery that it must be charged at least twice daily; often more. This is a problem Apple also recognizes. When it comes to the USB-C, Tord tested it multiple times, both with his own phone, wireless headset and game controller.

Conclusion Most of the time, the mobile phone was charged with no difficulty, and the device shut itself off half an hour after reaching 100%. This was yet not always the case, as we sometimes found it had turned itself off too early. This was a special case, as the phone was quite low on battery, so it could be wise to have an eye on it in the beginning. The charger clearly shows when it is sending power by emitting a blue light. When the power is cut, the light is turned off.

In addition to this, we also tested with a power meter. A plug did not follow with it, so we used an ordinary mobile charger plug. From this, we saw that it charges with a higher power level than an ordinary charger. The charger used some of the same time to 100%, and the biggest difference is that the recieved charger cut to 0W instead of slowly continuing to charge.

After having tested the charger for over a week, we can conclude that it works as designed, yet it did not succeed in fixing the broken battery on the iPhone (which may not be the charger’s fault, as the battery level is set on 70% after two years). It may not be the smart chargers destiny to save the world, but at least it doesn’t hurt. More info can be found on apias.no

Two beers with Runa Tunheim Maiken Halvorsen Journalist

Celine Våga Translator

Life before Ås Runa grew up on a small farm in Valsøyfjord, Nordmøre. She describes a childhood packed with nature experiences and days filled to the rim with activities. Everything from athletics, dancing, marching band and fiddle-playing had to be tried out. Her parents wanted her to spend a lot of time outside and let her use her imagination. Screen-time was limited to half an hour a day. I would not have challenged this girl to a duel in “When I was young…”, as when Runa was young, she played with dolls made of rocks with self-painted faces on top of boulders! Her creativity flourished from early on, something that she has brought along through the years, and that the community in Ås has enjoyed greatly. When she reached adolescence, the Valsøyfjord girl left the small town and moved to the big city of Trondheim. There she studied visual arts and joined a folkmusic group. The path then took her to Lofoten folk high school, where she learned surfing, skiing and crafts. From there, surfing trips to Portugal and Morocco followed. The life she describes makes one want to drop out of studies and join a similar folk high school right away, even though she admits the surfing could be quite scary when the winter waves reached five meters! After her stay at Lofoten, Runa went on to backpack through Thailand and Laos. This lady surely does not lack a desire for experiences!

Life in the Ås-bubble After learning that Ås offered a one-year science programme, Runa decided to take such a year. Here, she instantly got a cultural shock and discovered that this was something right up her lane. She was soon engulfed by the Ås-bubble, joining Tuntreet as a journalist and Flatlusa as a bandmember right away. It didn’t take long before she joined Lærken, where in 2019, she volunteered as the revue chief. Suddenly, this year had become an integrated Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture.

TWO BEERS

Flatlusa has had a special place in her heart since she started at NMBU, and it is safe to say that she has been a steady force within the association. During her rebellious teen years, Runa says she considered “becoming cool and stop playing the fiddle”. Her grandmother strongly disagreed with this thinking, and was determined to pay for her music lessons. So, the fiddle playing continued and, both Flatlusa and Runa herself (and also every one of us who has had the pleasure of listening to them), could not have been happier about it. From being about five members when she joined, Flatlusa’s number of members has almost tripled. Her eyes light up when she talks about what seems like blooming interest for folk music among students. “Everyone deserves to experience or participate in the world of folk music”, she smiles. One particularly exciting memory was the time they played at the Hannkatt-attic and started an extraordinary party.

run the Café Club for a time period. She had a bunch of ideas and dreams for the Café Club, to various degrees of success. Did you know that the meal offers at the Café Club didn’t exist before Runa and the Operations Manager at the time came around? It started with soup and bread, and was eventually expanded to several courses. Cozy fireplace evenings in the Rose Garden and Wednesday pre-games were also created during this time. Another dream she had was to draw in the students traveling by train to enjoy the cultural offers of the big city. The catchy concept name “Åslo” would offer the weirder Oslo-hippie-cultural refills. It didn’t exactly go as she had hoped, and she and

other culture thirsty landscaping students still traveled (before Corona) to Oslo to sit at the Cultural House or dance salsa in a café. “The lesson would be not to take on too much”, she advises as she happily passes the torch over to someone else. Exchange in Italy Runa’s exchange adventure was set to take place in the spring of 2020. After arriving in Bolzano of Northern Italy, she got two days at the school. The virus strangled the homeland of the pizza, and everything had to be shut down in a hurry. Vaffanculo Corona! Caught in a country with a national curfew, bad internet reception in

The board of Samfunnet After a “Two beers” interview with the Event Assistant at the time, Runa applied for the same position at Samfunnet. She describes the position as super fun and rewarding, but also quite time-consuming. During her time as the assistant, she took part in creating “Tuesday refills” at Samfunnet (something that still stands strong this very day, despite Corona!). She worked for more variety, and to lower the bar for those who were looking for something other than getting drunk. She was later encouraged to apply for the position of Event Coordinator. She took the challenge and lined up for the General Assembly (GA). She tells how she had a “bottom-up” perspective of those in higher positions at Samfunnet. It was frightening to compare oneself to these skilled people with “chief T-shirts” and keychains around their neck, but nonetheless, she became one of them. As Event Chief she, among other things, created the committee position “KS Aktuelt” and arranged a burlesque show. She is, by the way, surprised that there are not more applicants for the position of Event Coordinator, as it probably is one of the coolest positions at Samfunnet. Runa’s positions at Samfunnet do not stop at Event Coordinator: she has been a Bar Guard, Handyman/Caretaker at SiÅs, and Edition 03 Volume 76

TWO BEERS the dorm and closed airports, Runa got in a taxi in the middle of the night to cross the border to Switzerland and fly home. She completed her studies online while staying at home in Valsøya, while her “lavish taxi trip to Switzerland” was heavily covered by local media in Valsøyfjord! But things were not all that bad. She had not been home for long before an unexpected Corona-flirt occured. Misfortune in exchange - fortune in love?

A superhuman that never relaxes? When I ask Runa what she does to - or if she ever even does - relax, she laughs and replies “never!!”. As I have lived with her before, I would not have been surprised if she was not joking. She eventually admits that she relaxes the most with a nice, long run in the forest or when she creates something. She

wonders if she might have mild ADHD, and hopes people don’t take it as bragging when she says that she gets more from creating something, like painting, writing a poem or a song. This summarizes Runa well. You quickly notice how much she likes creating something, whether it’s for the community or for her own relaxation.

Current life During her six years at Ås, her days have been more affected by everything other than her studies. One can almost hear the desperate Jiminy Cricket on her shoulder shouting: “What about your studies, Runa? What about your studies??”. However, she does not regret neglecting her studies over her social life. She actually remembers the former principal encouraging people to be more engaged in the student life itself and her own hobbies when she first came to NMBU, and thought it was wonderful advice. It would also seem that Runa has not changed her study style/lifestyle during her Master’s degree. When questioned about her Master thesis, she shortly replies that she is writing a Master thesis about site development in small local communities by the coast, before she quickly jumps over to talking about a business project she’s working on besides her Master thesis. The idea is to make a sort of matchmaker for those who want to move out to more quiet villages. It would also help you find municipalities that would pay you to move there, old houses with great potential and local communities that compliment your requirements/expectations to the potential residence. She is very excited to hopefully launch this service for the people in the nearest future. Runa concludes that she takes after her parents when it comes to her visions of the future and her lifestyle. “I probably got it through mother’s milk”, she laughs, and adds how much she emphasizes shaping her own daily life, and being an active resident in a small community where you create events instead of getting them served on your plate.

To Runa There is no doubt that there are many students at Ås who value your work for the student community, but there are not many who has worked for Samfunnet as much as you have. In the Board of Samfunnet you always did a little extra without demanding any reward or appreciation. Everything that had to be done for events were done without you pushing us to contribute. How you survived your days, no one has ever understood, but no matter how many balls you juggled in the air, you always managed to balance it out. For us at the Board of Samfunnet, you were understanding and helpful, and you reached far to make sure we were alright and that we could meet our shared goals. You also stretched yourself far to create a rich semester program with events every day, all within a budget which was enforced by an unnecessarily harsh chief of economy... Even if there “never” were funds for your ideas, you managed to move money around from one event to the other, to make events possible. On behalf of the Board of Samfunnet Oda, Cecilie og Lars

Six presentations, a panel discussion, and a live podcast were held, with the aim of giving the participants an idea of what part the ocean plays in the climate crisis. 21% of the solution A representative from the Centre for the Ocean and the Arctic spoke about the ecosystem-services the oceans provide, how human activities threaten these, and not to mention, how the ocean can play a key part of fixing the problem. He quoted IPCC’s Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere from 2019, which claims that the ocean can make for 21% of the solution to the climate crisis. Assistant leader for the Norwegian Climate Foundation spoke about the role of politics, how Norway can end the age of oil in style, and the conversion to a green future. Representatives from the business world talked about how the oil will still be important in the coming years, but also about how the private business community sees the necessity, and especially the profitability, of the green transition. The future of the petroleum industry After an hour-long lunch break where participants had the opportunity to visit interactive stands, discuss the speeches and

(last but not least) form networks, it was time for the panel discussion. The chairman introduced the topic for the discussion: “The Future of the Petroleum Industry”. The panel consisted of Alis Helene Tefra form the advocacy group Norwegian Oil and Gas, the industry company Moreld’s Geir Austigård, Anne Jortveit from the Norwegian Climate Foundation and Jørgen Randers, professor at BI, or as he put it: “First and foremost, I am old”. Nobody wanted an immediate disposal of the oil sector, that’s something all the panelists could agree upon. However, the phase-out of the oil industry was the topic that caused the most debate. Randers expressed no doubt in that the world needs to get out of oil, coal, and gas if we are to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. This was his main message, which he kept repeating. He even went as far as to shelve the entire Climate Cure 2030, and claimed that: “if we just ditch the coal, oil and gas, we can reach the twodegree-goal”. On the opposite side, was Alis Tefra from Norwegian Oil and Gas, who seemed less ready to end the oil chapter. Her message was: The solution is not to phase out the oil, but to introduce new technology that over time can outperform the oil industry.

TUNTREET

Technological solutions None of the panelists brought up the topic of reducing consumption, and neither the chairman nor the interactive audience confronted them about it. Overconsumption and degrowth were not mentioned at all during the first day of the seminar. Solutions that bring no money to the state simply don’t seem popular to bring up at the Energy Seminar. On the other hand, the attention was directed towards alternative solutions, and the competitiveness of sustainable solutions. Several alternatives were presented, all deemed “currently too expensive, of course”. That’s what Anne Jortveit form Norwegian Climate Foundation said regarding liquid solar energy. But it might as well have come from any of the panelists and speakers at the Energy Seminar 2021. Even though the slogan is that new technology is to solve the climate crisis, the issue of funding haunts all the solutions. According to Jørgen Randers, the government is the solution. The green transformation is non-profitable with the current technology and cost, and thus the government needs to make up for the missing demand, so that the projects can be conducted. That’s how we can develop knowledge and technology, and that’s the only way we’ll be able to proceed into the renewable future.

Maybe if the panel had consisted of at least one representative under the age of 50, they would have been more critical towards the intense technology-optimism. After all, there is a risk associated with downsizing areas (the ocean is also an area) in favor of new energy production, as research of the consequences of ocean energy is still inadequate. Should the solution prove itself defective, it’s not the older generation that has to deal with the aftermath. Diversity The Energy Seminar is all about networking between students and the businesses, but the discussion would have benefited from professionals with a more diverse background. The panel mainly represented the private sector, in addition to an economist from academia. A scientist and a politician would have brought valuable arguments to the debate. As was mentioned several times at day two of the seminar, diversity is a vital part of sustainability. We also need a sustainable discussion. Last year’s Energy Seminar was cancelled due to infection control measures, but this year’s seminar proved that everything is possible – with the right technology.

“The Ministry of Petroleum and Energy and NVE (Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate) talked about the potential and the challenges of ocean wind and liquid solar power.”

Rector roast chat

It is safe to say that the spring of 2021 hasn’t been the easiest semester, in regards to planning events at Samfunnet. Nevertheless, there are some good moments, and the “roast” of Sjur is one of them. About 60 users logged in March 2nd to get to know our dear rector, and attempt to put him on the spot. Tord Kristian F. Andersen Journalist

A Cooperation Between Samfunnet and NMBU The event was based on submitted questions, with hosts Tuva Todnem Lund and Marek Zimmerman, AU-leader and Chief of Marketing at Samfunnet, respectively. Calling it a roast is questionable at best, as next to none truly challenging questions are asked, and Sjur avoids answering the most difficult ones. Do get me wrong, I find the dear Dumbledore of NMBU charming as ever, but I’d rather name the event “Rector Pleasant Talk”. Even if it isn’t Samfunnet that’s hiring a new rector, we can still be careful about how we present an applicant; 40 Edition 03 Volume 76

who is essentially equal to other hopeful applicants. With that out of the way, let’s take a look at what we’ve learned! Pride and weaknesses When asked if there’s anything in particular Sjur is proud of, he finds it hard to brag, but he is more than willing to praise UKA for the work they did last fall. When pressure is applied, he admits that he does find some pride in being a rector. “Could you have a better job?” “No.” One of the points that get close to an actual roast, is that Sjur is a bit languid, and could

have been better at working out. Does he have any other bad habits? Apparently, that’s confidential, as the rector claims that these habits are too bad to be mentioned. On the bright side, corona has made him good at maintaining social distance. For instance, seminars are held as webinars.   The Rector Job Webinars seem to characterize the life of a rector. Anyways, Sjur is quite selective about it. When asked concretely what it is he does, he answers: “Read lots of papers”. Before papers are handed to the board members, Sjur is likely to have read them three times, which can feel a bit aggravating

TUNTREET if the members don’t read them properly. Being rector during Corona ironically proves more time consuming than before. Generous(?) World Dictator Well, this was all very uncontroversial, what about politics and stuff? Sjur as a world dictator would have dissolved all country borders and let all the administrative happen on county level. A milder version of the question is what he would have done with a hundred million. A tenth would have gone to the disadvantaged around the world, and another tenth to the ones in Norway. The last tenth would go to support the UN’s sustainability goals. The rest goes in the bank. Is that Sjur’s weakness? Extreme greediness? When asked again he claims that they will only be there until he comes up with better ideas. Marek comes with a comment that Campus Ås apparently isn’t something he will invest in. Well, if he can be Dumbledore from Harry Potter, he can be a (partly generous) Smaug from the Hobbit as well. Sjur, Social Clubs and the Common Students Regarding social clubs, specifically Hunkatten’s Saint Lucy’s breakfast, he had this to say. The fact that FFD wrote two elaborate letters, and their need to uphold their tradition, gave him no choice but to join them. The saffron buns tasted like “… uuum… saffron buns». The song was pleasant though! And if other social clubs want him in on something, they’re free to try; but there’s no surefire way of how to charm him into joining. When asked about

Who is Sjur? Age - 62 (birthday 28 hours after the event) Marital status - Separated (with a dear one in Croatia) Dog- or cat person – Frog person Favorite flower - Tussilago Farfara Role at “Farmen” – The farmer Which country would he invade? – Croatia

his favorite club, he laughs nervously and says he wouldn’t dare answer. Rector has faith in the students, but refuses to take responsibility for legally mature people, for better or worse. Students having the Wednesday’s Bodega will have to be their deal. He doesn’t find it wise to drink during the working week, but won’t give any further recommendations about it. However, he’s no slouch, and will easily bring down a half-bottle in “only” five seconds. Corona restrictions On the other hand, Sjur goes hard in defense of the students, on how the government have been way too strict. There’s a lack of understanding of the students during the pandemic. How he was pressured to dismiss students from school during buddy week is something worth mentioning. How laboratory- and field work was neglected, is also something Sjur finds unfortunate.

with a handlebar mustache and 4-5cm curls. When I hear about the curls and the stache I’m instantly curious and send Sjur an e-mail hoping to see how he wore them. Unfortunately, those pictures are gone, but he offers a young, charming, bowl cut boy instead. The event went on for about an hour, and even though I would like to see some more pressure on one of our top authorities in the Ås-bubble, I’m pleased with the fact that we’re still able to host interesting events at Samfunnet, even in the corona times. At the time of writing the pressure is slightly lifted, so we can only hope for more, maybe even physical events, in the coming times. Some final words of encouragement form Sjur: “We are hear to learn, not to get a grade to bring with us”. Learning isn’t just school, so see the people around you, give them a call, and socialize with them!

by the decade the 60s

Tord Kristian F. Andersen Journalist

Summarizing the Tuntreet of the 60’s is difficult, in several ways. In the early 60’s it is clear to me that the magazine is gaining self-conscience regarding humor and coverage. The late 60’s on the other hand tries to turn this established formula over. So, what was Ås really like in the 60’s? And how did Tuntreet handle it? Let’s take a closer look. “What is Tuntréet?“ I begin by reading an interview from 1962 with the Chairman at the time, Kjell Aksnes, who says “Studentsamfunnet should aim its gaze towards a wider world than the one we find in the courses.” Later the same year he answers the question “What is Tuntréet? Well, it’s Thorvald’s own magazine”. Some may consider this a contradiction, but you don’t necessarily need to visit distant places to discover the world around you. Studentsamfunnet was running at full speed, and the social clubs seem of great importance in this period. Making magazines the old way In addition to being chairman, Kjell Aksnes was a part of the editorial staff in 1961. I give him a call to ask about the workflow, and he tells me, among other things, that

Aleksander Mæland Munkejord Translator

the printing process was a tedious one. Nowadays everything is done on the computer, but back then everything had to be done analogically. All text had to be written by typewriter, later to be cut and pasted to a draft that was mailed to the printing company. Then, lead-sets were assembled based on the content, which were then printed. It could take several weeks before the finished product was sent back. In regard to content, he remembers a lot of coverage about Samfunnet. There was a balance between what was pure fun, and what had substance. Even though Tuntreet had its own office, a lot of the work was done in the different dorms where people lived. This was back when people still lived at Circus and Tivoli. “A little bit of cheating” I get in touch with Jon Godal, editor in chief in 1962. He tells me that making the magazine could be strenuous work, especially when they were few workers. Back then, with just over 200 students at NLH, recruitment was difficult. A solution was to use pseudonyms when writing, and Godal can tell of at least four of his own, so that it wouldn’t seem like everything was written by the same person. Quality and mentality The quality of Tuntreet is a subject often brought up. In the editorial of 7th edition in 1963 the variation is explained: “As an excuse for a bad result one can choose freely between 1: Useless editor, 2: Uninspired and lazy students, 3: The financial position doesn’t allow for full “range of motion”.” The magazine is otherwise described as the editor’s personal mouthpiece. This is easy to tell by how the focus changes along with the editorial staff every year. A quote from

42 Edition 03 Volume 76

an earlier editor concludes that ”It’s hard to tell if congratulations or condolences are in order, for a new editor”. Samfunnet structure In 1963 the board of Samfunnet resembles that of today’s, with a comparable amount of positions and similar specializations, in addition to elections both spring and fall to ensure continuity. Tuntreet, on the other hand, was organized a bit different from that of today. There was only one editor, elected every six months, and they were all by themselves. Towards the end of the decade this was addressed, by having both an editor and an editor-elect at all times. Tuntreet economy In the final edition of 1963, the costs of Tuntreet are presented. Paper/print and other costs were about 1500kr. Ads

BY THE DECADE

could provide up to 1500 and selling the magazine another 400. Wait… really? Did Tuntreet … run a profit?? Perhaps not so strange when the ad-collector’s work was paid, with 10% of the total ad revenue. Adchief emeritus Osmund Asheim tells that in the first edition of 1964, the printing costs would be covered if a third of the magazine was adorned with ads. This is also something he accomplished, most of the time. Pentagonism, jubilees and cheese At this time there was announced a naming contest for the new student village that we now know as Pentagon. Here, names like Solbakken, Kilejordet, Kjerringhagen and Mekka were proposed. It is hard to imagine any other name than the one we know today. The cornerstone was laid down during a ceremony November 3rd,

1964. A worry at the time was the so-called Pentagonism. The fear that people would be stuck at Pentagon and wouldn’t go to Samfunnet and the other facilities that Ås had to offer. 1964 was also a great year for Studentsamfunnet in Ås, when it proudly turned 100 years, something evident throughout several editions. Should you be interested in these first 100 years, the “Åsstudenter I 100 år” is available for free in the online national library.

The 60’s were also the decade of cheese. Never before have I seen so many cheese ads in one place. Maybe it has something to do with not everyone having refrigerators yet? Women and Tuntreet With March 8th still fresh in our minds it is

easy to tell that the feminist tendencies are slowly manifesting themselves as the decade passes. I think of Foreningen Hunkatten in particular, as the oldest female student social club, founded in 1960. In 1967 the student population had grown to about 400, but there was still a strong male majority. In 1968 we get our first female editor, and with her, a great change: The logo of Tuntreet is replaced. The old logo not to be seen until 2004. The content is also largely directed towards what happens in the world, compared to the introspective

focus of earlier years. The silly pseudonyms are also mostly (if not entirely) gone by now. Politics and the transition into the 70’s The tone of the magazine loses a bit of its formality throughout the decade, gets a bit less internal, and more political involvement is shown. In the mid-60’s Studentsamfunnet in Ås is still supposed to be politically neutral. Ironic, perhaps, as the 70’s were nothing but politics. The desire to support developing countries stands strong, as Norway is truly back on its feet after the war, and being an agricultural college it’s no wonder that there’s written a lot about how we are going to solve the food problems of the world. Politics is truly the topic that shapes Ås and Tuntreet moving forwards, and it is something I will cover when I write about the 70’s. The engagement is on the border to fanatical, and has a great impact on how both Samfunnet and NLH is viewed afterwards. Many thanks to Lars Raaen, Halvor Holtestaul, Kjell Aksnes and Jon Godal, who have all been very helpful. See you next decade!

Wrath of the pussycat Pusen Brede in isolation I got a gaping call from the virus trackers after I was at a Crash Bandicoot & Chill with Kort og Bredt with a gaming-frenzied infection spreader with goggos and beyblades in the back pockets. I did a test and was told “you’re full to the rafters with covid-19”. I was infected... I was angry and meowed “you infected me! Fucking infection spreader – fucking gaming-frenzied beyblade fuck!” I stumbled out of the testing room and rushed in full speed, four-step and dobbeldanz into the kitchen. Foam-sweating as always, I ripped open the fridge and clawed out a chunky big one classic that was just sitting on the shelf with nasty mush juice from last weeks’ dinner. I fired up the oven to 250 and flung the flabby pizza like a frisbee straight in, without the tray. Then I fell asleep and forgot the cheese discus and ancient ham in the oven. “Bæbubæbu” it went, in the middle of the night, when the firemen clambered in and spurted water, foam and lye everywhere and along with all the other crazy shit they had in the tank. The next morning it was crucial to get some real gravel my stomach could handle. I prepared a bowl of cereal, but since every SiÅs residence is bursting with flour beetles, a few of them fell into the breakfast. Ah well - some extra proteins in the

schtuk don’t hurt. Lightly boiled cereal and a tad boiled mothers milk does well with an active fourwheeler like me. If you’re in isolation, you’re in isolation, so I encased myself in two blankets and made a fort. After an hour, I heard a pling from my mobile, and had to go out to look. It was, of course, Pelle, who was wondering how I was holding up. He tried a booty call later on, but I scared him off by saying “it’s woman’s day, you bulging fuck – where’s my present?” He had just the one, he said, and some shit about “his third paw” and something weird like he was nasty in the pit so I just lost it and cut him off. So, there I was, cocooned in double bed covers, watching five-and-fifty episodes of Friends, tipping litres of H-milk, stiff cat biscuits and half a packet of prince, extra weak-kneed. Consumption of this degree sets the system in check mate, so I had to go to the shitter. It was as hard as a brick in the bunghole. So, I pulled up my phone to hold out and after 15 minutes I fell into my own big one classic. That is when I realized it was 13 days left of my quarantine.

In the center of Ås you can find a student collective with big dreams and ambitions, and an even bigger garden! None of us are experts on gardening but follow us on our journey fighting snails and roe deers, trying to make ourselves a kitchen garden. We will share some good advice along the way. Maybe you’ll also wish to find out how green your fingers are? Little has happened Few things are happening these days. We can soon start to look outside and dream about moving our plants out there, but the risk of it being too cool for small plants is still there. So, in the meantime we can find other plant activities we can do inside. Propagating from cuttings You don’t have to start from scratch to expand your plant collection, and an efficient way to do this is to remove cuttings from a plant. Cut off a few centimeters from the stem of a plant you want to copy and put it in water. This is your cutting! Remove any big leaves in order for your cutting to spend its energy on growing roots. After a few days or a couple of weeks, it will have new roots. When these are long enough, put them in soil, and voilà – you have a new plant!

The Spice Corner Even though the sun is shining, it’s not always a bright story. The update of the basil I promised in the previous edition is unfortunately rather boring, because not a lot has happened here. I’m giving it a new try by covering it with plastic and watering it a bit more often. So, we’ll see. Maybe it has been too cold or not enough sun? Maybe the seeds aren’t viable? Luckily, there is no harm in trying again with new seeds if his doesn’t lead anywhere. EDIT: A few days later, luckily before Tuntreet was sent to printing, a couple of small green leaves have emerged from the soil. The plastic and water did really work.

Basil: not a lot happening

After a while the roots will start to grow, and you can place them in soil!

Propagating from offsets Some plants also make their own offsets. This is not the same as a cutting, but a baby plant growing out from the mother plant. These can also be put in water, and will eventually grow roots so that you put them in soil. Some of our offsets are more than ready to be placed in soil, so we will see what has happened in three weeks’ time! If you don’t have any plants of your own, you can ask some of your friends if they have any which you can take a cutting from. You can also check out plant groups on Facebook. A plant is a nice way to remember a friend. They stay with you, and I find myself thinking about the person who gave it to me whenever I look at them.

P TUNTREET R I E S T L Y THOUGHTS

God is not the answer! We often think about God in simple terms. Many Christians and atheists also do this. We want to understand it plainly. Systematize and categorize. Find a logical solution for God as a problem. Understand the whole.

TUNTREET

But God is not the answer. God is not a problem that needs a solution. God is more like a question. A question that is directed at me. What is it you want me to do for you? Christians are now celebrating Lent. We want to prepare ourselves for the celebration of Easter. We all know this is the greatest of the Church festivals. We rejoice in the victory of life over death. Jesus Christ is risen today. That is the essence of its message. Through the times, many have considered this an answer. The answer humanity has always wanted. That is mostly right, but at the same time, the suffering and death of Christ hides a question. Was this really necessary? Is there not enough death and suffering in the world? A God on a cross! Which problem does it solve for a world in constant anguish? God is not the right answer! God is no predictable solution. But God challenges me. Do you want to lean against me? As a friend, seeking support from a friend. We see things not as they are. We see things as we are. We see neither the world, ourselves, or God, objectively. Naturally, we cannot. I am the who is seeing, and no one else. It is my own perspective I navigate with. To lean against God, is to lean against the unknown. To lean against one you cannot fully understand. That is to dare! That is to try! To want to believe. Do you want an unequivocal answer to the most challenging question in your life? Fair enough! But to believe in God is not a box. The faithful cannot answer all questions. For the faithful, the world does not always make sense. That is because God is not what we think. God is not what we think. God wants to be like a friend. One to talk to, to turn to, one who supports you. God is friendship. One must give to receive. At times, you may be less than friends. I do not often understand even my best of friends. A friendship must be maintained for it to be developed. One loses and often finds the way back to each other. An answer on the challenging crucifixion of Easter is that God wants to be our friend. A friend who does not fail us, even when life looks bleak. Sigurd Andreas Bakke Studentprest NMBU

COLUMNS

Board of Samfunnet Have a good spring, dear students! Spring is here, bearing sun and warmth with it. The days are longer and lighter. The focus of the office wing has been on the General Assembly on Monday. Accounting is completed and approved. The goals for 2020 are examined, the report is written and sent. The meeting documents are available to read on our website (www. samfunnetiaas.no), so have a good look. A new issue which will be presented this year, is the Studentsamfunnets emission accounting. After GA H19 it was decided that emissions should be accounted, and the emissions accounting committee have really done a solid job well done. They have done a thorough job, and with that we have a firm foundation for further improvements. It is a general overview of the emissions which will be presented, so if you wish to view more specific details,

please contact us. When this reaches the press, the candidacy overview will be available to read. If you wish to run for election, it is not too late! It will be possible to bench yourself under the different election sections at GA. The GA will be streamed from Aud.Max., but candidate prsentations are held on zoom, and voting occurs on a digital platform. There are many positions up for elections this spring, so it is a lot of exciting stuff to follow. Anyway. We are looking at new ways of making our digital events better. We have hosted several physical arrangement, mostly Tuesday refill and quiz. This is a sign that we are finally going the right way! As I am writing this, the events committee is working on the Sprellfestival, and we have huge expectations to both NM in student revues and Maskorama.

We will also make use of the opportunity of closed premises to do a bit of sorely needed renovation. We are polishing the floor in Café Klubben, and together with the new furniture, we promise a very comfortable café experience. The easter holiday approaches, and I hope you will all enjoy a break from your studies. Remember to be careful, and maintain good infection control, even though we are all fed up. Some personal advice is to make your day a little bit better with a large portion of buns and a subscription to Disney. Have a nice month of March, and we will see you at the GA!

Maylinn Dramstad Leader of the Board of Samfunnet

Student Parliament As of recent, we have focused a lot of loneliness amongst students. The studying barometer showed us that NMBU students are among the loneliest students in the country, and also the ones who miss their studying environment the most. The Tårn Tournament is a project we, with NMBU, SiÅs, Samfunnet and Buddy Week, have started on. We hope all enlisted get to know more people and grow The student election is closing in. We appreciate copperation with NMBU, and lately, understanding and support from Norwegian Institute of Public Health. Us students have taken a too large toll for the closed nation, and it has been important for us to make noise about this, and let you know when things show up. Hooray for open reading halls! It is very important that we keep following infection control regulations and restrictions, and show UDENTTINGET that we are worthySofTfaith.

The goal of a nonogram is to shade in as many squares as indiated by the number in the column above, or on the row next to it. The numbers show how many shaded squares are connected. Two numbers show two “sequences”. There needs to be at least one empty square between each “sequence”. The squares with an “x” cannot be shaded in. This will result in an image if done correctly.
