HAPPY NEW YEAR, RECKLESS PEOPLE! Since our last issue, Tuntreet sent out a questionnaire online - not for, but about Tuntreet,. It was distributed on Facebook and answered by no less than 124 people. Low participation compared to the fall questionnaire about election and TT Taboo, which probably means most are too happy to care.

Representative or not, these 124 people who answered - what did they think? Very differently, as the score ranged between 1 and 10 for all types of content. And that’s a good thing, because it looks like most people got something they like, even the person who gave 1’s to the entire paper save the game pages and erotic novels (which were given 10’s).

Over to Tun og Tre. The concept got high scores. Quite a few (primarily members of the student associations) commented that the last issue featured too many Lærken-members and a lot of unnecessary input. You are right. Not on purpose, believe me - we messed up by going for easy solutions in the end, without taking a holistic approach. Our bad, sorry. The attachment, odel catalogue, however, was the most favoured part of the paper in this entire questionnaire, averaging a score of 8,2. Lovely news. If the catalogue did indeed result in any new couples, we would very much like an interview.

Some trends became apparent. Current affairs got a surprisingly high score, and the new concept Taboo were given lots of praise-worthy scores and reviews, but also some comments concerning layout. Research and theme articles were generally below average, while revues and parties are timeless favorites. Student associations dig student association stuff, the rest prefer other categories. And nobody actually likes student association talk? Save a very few people who awarded the concept 10/10, it’s safe to say this part got most 1’s, with an average of 5 which puts it on the very bottom. We love tradition and won’t stop with the student association talk (yet), but you who are contributing to these pages might

The town that’s been snoozing between University-buildings and fields, will soon become a regional town. As a natural hub for the Follo-railway and an ever-growing university, it’s been decided that Ås will become a big part of the expected population growth in Akershus county, and the inflow will be among the highest in Norway. Okay, you might think. This gives Ås a great opportunity to renew it’s dull city center and improve it’s cultural activities, but this also puts the town council in a tough position. what areas should be expanded and what areas should be conserved? Søråsjordet for instance, has for a long time been a matter of contention. In many of the suggested construction plans there are apartment buildnings placed on the border of the field next to Samfunnet. This forms a connection between the city center and the University, which can be a good thing. At the same time though, it messes with Ås’s biggest identity symbol and blocks the use of a much needed plot of land in the capital of agricultural - this is not okay. Another disputed area is the marshes north of the city center. As Åsmåsan is located beside the train station, it is the perfect place to build houses. According to the construction plans there is room for about a thousand extra homes in this area. The problem is that the soil here is made of quicksand. This isn’t really an ideal foundation and will most likely cause problems later on. Åsmåsan also takes up a lot of rainwater and without it there will be considerable consequences for how surface water is handled. Furthermore, there are still endangered species in this area and the release of greenhouse gases is still to be discussed. The town council are short on options when the state is demanding densification. Construction needs to happen somewhere, but as a conservative marsh- and agricultural enthusiast, I must say I’m quite sceptical to the whole situation.

Spotlight on SiÅs -Unhappy families in Skogveien Veslemøy Waage Journalist

“Families with kids have different requirements for living situations than single students. This is where we live, during the semester, during Christmas and summer. The kids are part of the local environment through school and kindergarten, and view the student accommodation as a home where they can grow and develope like all other kids in their neighbourhood.” - Liv Anna Lindmann

- SiÅs create a mountain of frustration. They are supposed to work as our social welfare, but they don’t take it seriously, says Liv Anna Lindmann. She lives in Skogveien, represents the housing environment and is a student with children. On behalf of herself and others she has gone to SiÅs with numerous problems, but the student families are primarily met with criticism.

During the last few weeks, Tuntreet has been in contact with several residents of Skogveien. Their names are Aurora, Amna, Liv Anna and Ragnar. What they all have in common is that they are students with children and have had unpleasant encounters with SiÅs. “SiÅs does not recognize themselves in the criticism that has been voiced regarding these issues, and experience it as wrongly expressed”, answers SiÅs’ director of residence, Pål Magnus Løken, in an e-mail to Tuntreet.

Furniture worth 20 000 NOK - Thrown Out

– SiÅs threw out more or less all of our savings. This is told by Aurora, who lived in Skogveien for two and a half years. She had purchased furniture with her boyfriend over a period of time and stored it in two sheds. – We got an e-mail on a Thursday at the end of august, warning us that the sheds needed to be emptied by next Wednesday. That is an unbelievably short notice for a mother with a small toddler during exam period. Aurora answered the e-mail Tuesday afternoon, she says, and got an oral confirmation that same day that it was okay to keep the sheds, but the e-mail was sent to the wrong person. – When we left Wednesday morning we saw a baby carrier sticking out of the container, which looked very much like our own, she discloses. The container was already full with their furniture.

She and her boyfriend managed to stop the ongoing dumping. They got some help to move things back in again, but expresses that they have received little help from SiÅs since. – We were met with an unpleasant attitude from day one. I asked Pål Magnus who was in charge, and if this was something they were going to replace. I was yelled at over the phone.

“An unbelievably short notice for a mother with a small toddler during exam period.” Tuntreet have seen the e-mail thread between Aurora and SiÅs, as well as pictures of damaged furniture and inventory after sitting in the container out in the rain. Much of it was new with the price tag still on, and some things were wrapped in silk.

Aurora has gotten a compensation from the insurance company, which say they will demand this money back from SiÅs. She reacts to the fact that SiÅs never apologized. They also asked for access to a storage room to repair the furniture, but were not granted this either. – From an environmental perspective it is shocking that they would throw usable things straight out, Aurora points out. As a reply SiÅs writes Tuntreet to tell that they clean out sheds each year, and in this case the tenants were noticed a week in advance that the cleanout was happening. They continue writing: “The tenant you are referring to did not reply to this notice as it was explicitly asked for. Instead she e-mailed another employee in SiÅs. This message was sent the last day before cleanup, and after office hours. The shed in question was localised in a different building than the one the tenants were located in, and it was not marked.” Other issues that have come to light in this text were not commented upon.

Amna was nearly thrown out three times

Amna says she has had problems with SiÅs since January 2016. At the time she needed to apply for a leave of absence because she couldn’t get accepted into any kindergarten school. As a result of not paying her semester fee she was declined an extention of her contract, despite the fact that she was continuing her studies the following fall. – Going for several months and not knowing if my family and I had a place to live once the contract ended was a burden, says Amna. The situation was not solved until long into April, when Amna came into contact with Liv Anna, who succeeded in getting SiÅs to renew her contract. – If Amna hadn’t contacted me she would have been thrown out. You can’t just throw families with children out on the street, says Liv Anna.

Amna describes this whole experience with SiÅs as incredibly humiliating. – Liv Anna came with the exact same reasons as I did, but she could renew my contract. Why were they more willing to listen to her than me? I experience this as an element of discrimination in my case. Apart from the case mentioned above Amna claims SiÅs tried to throw her out at two other occasions as well. The first time they accidentally gave her apartment to some other family, but luckily this resolved itself quickly. The second time SiÅs claims the rent was paid too late, despite the fact that she had an account statement that could document she paid it in time.

Tuntreet have seen the e-mail threads between Amna and SiÅs concerning the three cases and confronted SiÅs’ director of residence with the claims. As a reply SiÅs writes Tuntreet telling that they always allot contracts following the student residence regulation, and nobody is thrown out of their student residence as long as they follow these regulations. SiÅs have not commented other claims in this text. Amna wonders why SiÅs so strictly stick to regulations with students who do mistakes, when at the same time SiÅs themselves make mistakes often. – All contact with SiÅs has affected my studies, Amna finishes.

All were given parking fines overnight

Almost all residents with a car in Skogveien were given parking fines last year, when SiÅs did not give notice that the parking permit needed to be renewed, as they usually do. – We had a bonfire gathering the night the permit ran out, so clearly someone has been sneaking around giving out fines to all cars while we were sitting nearby, at night, tells Liv Anna.

When the residents arrived at the residence office the following Monday, they were told that SiÅs had digitalised the system. – You just had to write your registration number onto the computer, and they already had those. They’ve got to understand that everyone who is still going to live here, still has a car. Why on earth didn’t they do it themselves? wonders Liv Anna.

Saturday morning they woke up and saw the yellow tickets. – I guarantee Østlandske parkering has been aware of the situation. They have been better informed than us, says Ragnar Nese. – That is one good way to make our residence here pretty sour.

This is not the only problem that has occurred considering parking. Since SiÅs hired Østlandske parkering, a lot of people have been given fines. – Ok, so SiÅs found out they wanted a parking company. But they have to notice people when the system is changed, so we are at least given an opportunity to avoid fines. They have to notice us when they suddenly expand the area with payed parking. They have to mark the exact parking places, especially guest parking, says Ragnar.

Parking issues is making the environment sour and frusterated. This is something all residents Tuntreet has been in contact with have talked about. – My mother got a fine twice when she’s come to watch the kids, incredible that it should cost 800 NOK to babysit, says Liv Anna. – You get no information. Everyone who moves in here gets fines, that’s just how the system works, finished Liv Anna. “I reject the claims in this so-called case”, writes Pål Magnus as a reply to Tuntreet. “We have to assume the students themselves know if they have a valid parking permit or if it is about to run out, but in retrospect we can see usefulness in sending a notice.”

Voluntary initiative unwanted

The potato library, one of the residents’ initiatives to a better environment, had to be removed.

Several of those Tuntreet talked with point out that SiÅs’ behaviour is destructive for the communal feeling and volunteering spirit. Last summer several of the residents were involved in building a potato library, which acted as a place of gathering and which also was a nice activity for the kids. Ragnar called in advance and was given clear signal to put up the raised beds. Despite this, they were given strict orders two days later that the beds had to go. - We were told that planting like that could lead to that other people would start planting as well! Because that would have been a complete crisis, comments Liv Anna sarcastically. - Both small and large issues are present. Liv Anna and Ragnar can tell they lack a space to rent, for example for children’s birthday parties - the apartments are no larger than 49 square meters.

- There were spaces to rent before, but they were turned into more apartments, reports Ragnar. In affiliation with Grønn festival a few years ago, Ragnar suggested to the director of residence that they could arrange a swap shed in Skogveien. Families would be able to pick up furniture for free from those moving out, instead of just throwing out the possessions. - I was told we had to fix that ourselves, there was no support from SiÅs’s side. As a reply to these claims SiÅs writes: “At Skogveien 29, a larger area has been allotted for vegetable growing. We haven’t allowed for residents to have a vegetable garden just anywhere.” They further write that a couples apartment was built in Skogveien 24 in 2011, which has had other uses before, following critical lack of student residence. They also reply that they have no free area to use as a swap shed.

- It seems like SiÅs aren’t able to think in a nuanced way concerning the types of residential environment we really need up her, says Liv Anna. - Families with kids have different requirement for living situations than single students. This is where we live, during the semester, during Christmas and during summer. Student residence is smaller and simpler than most residences in Norway, we all know that, but they can still be nice homes. Better understanding from SiÅs could increase the well-being in the living environment considerably.

Keeping the Roads Clear The last few winters, Hankattforeningen st.1902 has been responsible a lot of the snowplowing done in the Follo area. Tuntreet has spoken with X-Tomcat Ole Anders Fjeldberg (25) from Ringsaker in Hedmark. He’s one of the dedicated workers who puts in the hours so that the public can get to where they need to go during the winter. And yes ladies: He is single. What was the reason you started with snowplowing? I thought the snowplowing here was terrible, so I assumed that they needed some decent working guys from Hedmark that would get their hands dirty. They needed someone who could take some action and responsibility. What’s the worst thing about snowplowing? It is that people are never satisfied with the plowing. Also that there are always some morons who park where they’re not supposed to and people that are always in the way. It has happened several times that I almost hit four, five people with the plow and one with the mill. Are you sober all the time in case you get called out? Pretty much. It is mentally taxing to wait for the phone to ring about snowplowing all the time. It corrodes the mind, body and soul. How often do you check the weather report? The weather forecast is updated four times a day, 04.10, 10.10, 16.10, and 22.10. I check every time on several weather stations. In addition, I watch webcams around Ski and satellite images. Is there a lot of physical work? Shoveling snow and the like? Sometimes I have to go out and lift the wings on the plow. They are really heavy. Otherwise, there are two places I really should shovel by hand, but I cheat and take out the snow blower so I don’t have to go out.

How long do you spend every time you’re out? It depends entirely on the amount of snow. If there is little snow it takes approximately 8 hours. When there is a lot of snow, I might plow for 35 hours straight. How do you handle the need for food when you’re out for so long? I’m a regular customer of Esso in Ski. There, I usually buy the usual, which is 450g bacon cheeseburger. Does snowplowing work with the ladies? Hell yeah it works! They’re digging it. Snowplowing’s a manly job, so it’s obvious that women are attracted to it. Actually, it’s a big reason why I still do it. Do you like to be the first one in an untouched area and open the roads for travel? Always best to be first! Then people see that you’re good at it and do a proper job. What kind of equipment do you have? I use a ploughshare. In addition, I have a two-stage snow blower in the back. I’ve got plenty of equipment... so to speak.

“Shh, we’re calculating” Why economists don’t understand reality Jardar Lindås Bringedal Journalist

Has the economy run wild? Does it lead to anything good? Can “mainstream economy” be sustainable? Will there always be growth? Is economy part of nature, or is nature a part of economy? Who knows. Author Roman Eliassen challenges economists to think about what they actually do, and points out the large distances that can exist between economic models and reality. Eliassen started at NHH in 2008, same year as the start of the financial crisis. During his five years studying, the financial crisis, the climate crisis, and the eurocrisis were hardly mentioned. The focus was on mathematical models and statistics. He learned about Robinson Crusoe and how things worked out for two people on an island. Economic models didn’t predict the financial crisis, because they largely oversaw social factors. When one learns about great economists like Smith, Marshall and Keynes, only fragments of their texts are chosen, which leaves us unable to construct the entire picture. In their texts, they warn about only using mathematics. This method is constructed from a dream world, not from reality. The world is more complex. Economists stand by the wrong method. That’s why a redefinition of the study is needed, and it needs to become

more relevant. Lift your gaze, put things into context. After Eliassen’s introduction, a panel discussion was held. From the discussion it came forth that the economy is built on the wrong basis. Nature is put into economy, not economy into nature. Environment and ethics are not considered seriously enough, and the models have clear limits. Research shows that economist are the least ethical, even worse than lawyers. Economists have made their own jargon, which results in only economists understanding the language. When the economy needs growth to go around, scarce resources are not going to hold up. The present models have to be regarded, and their deviation from reality needs to be identified and corrected. Too little discussion is formed around economics. We don’t talk about capitalism, we don’t talk about whether or not capitalism can stop climate change. Up until now, consumers are assumed to be rational and egoistic. When in reality they are not, system failure arises. There is agreement about economic courses being too narrow and having too much faith in models. Anette Alstadsæter, a professor at NMBU, agreed when macroeconomy was claimed to be dull. A suggestion of including psychology in the course plan came up, which could make it easier to predict people’s behaviour. Several economic theories should also be included. This way, everyone can choose the model they have most faith in. More perspectives are needed. Part of the problem is that the market demands economists who can put numbers on things, not the ones that think and are creative. Early in the study, original research articles should be shown, a state budget should be shown, and also original texts of the great economists. Towards the end, the author’s critical voice was given credit. The panel agreed that today’s status is not optimal, and that there are ways to improve it.

For the first time in a very long time, Samfunnet is open all week. Intimate concerts and the good ol’ beer- and politics bodega is accompanied by BEdoga, Åslo and Sløtface. Spring, come at me!

There is a lot to look forward to. The excitement is rising when both the former and present Events Manager lay out the new program for this semester. And it’s hard to hold your excitement back when the calander is filled with goodies. - We’ve made a few regular happenings in the hope to reach more people, Event Manager Runa Tunheim explains. - We want there to always be something to do, Runas adds, predecessor to Håkon Husdal. They admit that it wasn’t the easiest puzzle to solve, but eventually it worked out. With good help from the different student assosiations and groups, they’ve managed to put together a varied program that Thorvald and Tora can choose from depending on preference. A full week On Mondays there will be imtimate concerts and trivial banter. Tuesdays are reserved for TirsdagsPåfyll (Tuesday Refill). Wednesdays will be saved for meetings and of course parties(!), while on Thursdays it will of course be quiz-night. Fridays have gotten a more hip alternative to the wellknown revue- or concert night, which is a cultivated lounge in Café Klubben. Saturday Lounge is a bit different with it’s international vibes, followed by Sundays where anything can happen. A whole week has passed and you’ve gotten the full socity experience all seven days of the week . Keep an eye out for the new component Åslo, who’s goal is to stop the ongoing flow of Åslings to Oslo in the late weekend evenings. Now the urban capital is to be found right here in Ås.

- It’s been quite some time since there has been a proper Ås-Party at Samfunnet and that’s the reason why we got out hands on the best party- and countryband in Norway, Maria says, pleased. She is of course talking about the Vassendgutane concert which is right around the corner. They’re playing at the Semester Kickoff on Friday, January 16th. The other big event this year is Sløtface, the band that gladly wanted to stop by Ås on their tour around the world.

- It’s a big, aspiring band on a small stage. In other words, it will be a unique and amazing concert, Lisa states.

A unique and amazing concert The band will be playing at Halvors, and not at Festsalen, which the two Booking Managers are sure will create a rock atmosphere that is out of this world. - Just the thought of this concert makes us really excited, Maria states with a smile.

A huge band on a small stage In this tightly packed progam we must not forget about the concerts. Lisa Karine Haugland and Maria Refsland are Booking Managers. These two are responsible for the highlights of this semester, and have figured out what we’ve been missing in our lives up until now. Issue 01 Year 73 17

Tuntreet And we’re rolling! There is no doubt that the organizers are unreservedly positive about this spring. Eventmanager Runa sums it all up in a colorful and amazing sentence:

- Hopefully, the old volunteer building will rub it’s eyes, yawn and stretch like a cat to then be filled of life! Easter Break will in no way put a stop to all the fun, if anyone had that concern. After being closed for a week, there’s finally time for miniUKA, but what that implies, we will just have to wait and see. The Semester Program has already started off with a good ol’ theme party, and the Semester Kickoff with Vassendgutane is closing in. Psst! Don’t forget that you can find the program for each month in every issue of Tuntreet, and at samfunnetitaas.no.

Reader’s Addition

Geggen must not be forgotten! As most people in Ås have noticed, the GG-Hall recently got a makeover. That is all well and good. What is not so good, is that which has happened over the front door, on the west facing exterior wall and in various papers. It was apparently not enough to fix up the GG-Hall, so SiÅS decided they should fix up the name as well. Now it suddenly says Eika (Oak). What the hell? What has Eika done? Just stood there? It’s just ridiculous to name things after trees! For the uninformed, the GG-hall is named after Georg “Geggen” Guttormsen. Very few people know this, because many have never heard of Geggen.

Geggen was a genuine, engaged citizen. He was an enthusiast, who selflessly contributed a lot at NLH. Not to further himself, but to better the life of the students. Geggen was the embodiment of what we so proudly call the Ås-spirit. Geggen was a part of building both the Storebrand (the sports field) and Årungen rostadion. He sat for a long time and put in a significant effort in various boards, and was a driving force for the building of an indoor sports hall - the one we today know as the GG-hall, but many sadly misname as Eika. Geggen was also one of the people who started the Nordic Games, and was generally interested in sports.

It is sad that a man who has contributed so much the wellbeing of the students is getting replaced by a tree, which has done little more than stand there for a long time. Furthermore, it should be mentioned that a stationary tree is a poor symbol for exercise, whereas movement is a central part. A much better symbol is found in a sports man, a highly enthusiastic man, who is the personification of the Åsspirit. Men’s Volleyball Team Play Double Thrillers

On Sunday January 14th, NMBU’s men’s volleyball team played their first and last home games of the season. They faced off against one of their league’s top teams, Ivrig, who hail from Vestfold. The second game was against local team Holstad. The matches took some unexpected turns, and NMBU had both good and bad experiences.

Our men gave the favourites a good fight

the team captain for NMBU, Andreas Svanes, commented on the match: “We know that we can play well, but Ivrig is a very good team. It does not feel too bad to lose when we play as well as we do. The second game was really fun”.

We got to see an even match, with both teams showing a strong play. The NMBU players gave Ivrig a good fight, which got our men in a great mood. The match consisted of a best out of five games, each game going to 25 points and a possible tie-break round going to 15 points. In the second game NMBU dominated completely and Ivrig were noticeably rattled. Even so, the teams won two games each and the match went into a tie-breaker. Ivrig took that one home.

The match that surprised everyone

On this Sunday, Ivrig had a somewhat reduced team. Their line-up includes several family men, and not everyone could sacrifice a Sunday at home to attend the game.

“This will be an easy 3-0” win, was the comment from the Ivrig team leader before the next match started. Nobody disagreed with his prediction. NMBU should be able to take an easy win against Holstad, who had one less player on the court. The first two games matched this prediction, but things changed in the third game. Holstad played much more energetically and things started going their way. NMBU’s men struggled and lost the game. The opportunity for a 3-0 win was gone.

Holstad continued to play well in the fourth game. NMBU seemed frusterated by the resistance and struggled to get their groove back. The game turned into a thriller with both teams chasing victory as they reached 25 points and beyond (a team has to win by at least 2 points). Holstad eventually won, and brought the match into a tie-breaker. NMBU brought out their last bit of determination, and managed to save the victory in the tie-break match. Andreas Svanes had this to say after the match: “We were not expecting that kind of resistance. That was not fun”.

Something to mull over for NMBU

The final results were as expected, with a loss against Ivrig and victory against Holstad. Even so, the matches unfolded beyond prediction and NMBU is likely to take a few lessons to heart about how their team is affected by unexpected resistance. Perhaps this was a bit more excitement than the boys wanted, but it turned into good entertainment for those of us on the sidelines this Sunday.

Næringslivsdagen (Business Day) will this year be held on February the 14th. This day will be a great opportunity for those who are looking for a permanent job or a summer job, but also for those of you that want to explore your options. The business fair will open at 12am and in addition to the fair it will be possible to get your photo taken for your resumè. A job application course will also be hosted by Karrieresenteret, to better prepare you in searching for a job.

Take this opportunity and show up at Næringslivdagen 2018, and before you know it, you might have met your future employer and will get an advantage in the application process.

After the fair there will be a teambuilding event that some of the businesses has extra tickets for. These tickets will be handed out to random students that stop by the businesses on their stands. Information on what businesses you will find at the fair will be available in our business guide, aswell as on our websites. The lucky few that get to accopany the different businesses will be served excellent food and get to know them through different activities.

Who Cares about Valentines day? I have no idea where this day comes from. The almighty internet is completely spastic in it’s explanation of the origin of Valentines Day. One site explains about the roman celebrations of the godess Juno, while another lists possible historical or fictional characters by the name of Valentine. The most entertaining explanation is that in the middle ages, people would celebrate in the streets when the birds started mating. This is cute, if a bit intrusive to the birds’ privacy. Regardless of the origin, Valentines Day is here to stay. However, those who are not thrilled about it may find comfort in statistics. In Norway in 2015, 73% stated that the day was of no importance, and only 1 in 10 planned to buy flowers for their partner. Nevertheless, the ones who did celebrate spent 255 million NOK on love that very same day, so you might just have to give in to the sugar coated sweetness and make an effort if you aim to impress. If you want to celebrate the day, you will find some suggestions underneath where there is something for everyone. Cliché for a Reason Flowers and gifts are always a classic if you have money to spend, but check out these tips before you clamp on to the roses and lingerie. Truth be told, roses are really just glorified broccoli and in my opinion, it is a tragedy that they have become the symbol of true love. There are so many other beautiful flowers out there that both look and smell better, and are way cheaper. How about getting your local flower dealer to put together a nice bouquet based on your sweetheart’s favorite colour? Lingerie is always nice for established couples. However, if you want to celebrate the day with your underwear in

mind, you could instead visit Samfunnet and attend a titillating evening with the Norwegian sex shop Kondomeriet. Maybe you will both find something new and exciting to do for the rest of the evening? Go Completely Ghana Do not let Valentines Day scare you away from slouching on the couch and gorging on food all evening. The hunt for the perfect beanbag body (#beanbagbody2018) is fully compatible with eternal love and the bridge between them is called chocolate. In Ghana, they had this realisation forever ago, and simply celebrate Chocolate Day instead of Valentines Day. Chocolate is healthy, it brings people together and is easily combined with Netflix. In short, it provides the basis for a perfect date. If your sweetheart is a Noragricer, you could impress an international mindset and get som Ghanese cocoa. Birdwatching Do you want to impress a nature lover? Grab a blanket and some cocoa (Ghanese) and travel into the forest to celebrate the birds and their brand new will to mate. Maybe the spring fever will bring with it some inspiration for later, when you are home and looking for some way to... warm up again. On your way there, you could stop by Ås New Cooperative on their opening day and pick up something romantic, like a bouquet of broccoli. Green is the new red! Loneliness Marathon Alone on Valentines? You might want to ignore the day all together, but remember that this is a golden opportunity to really wallow in being alone! Depending on how pleased or displeased you are with being alone, here is a list of things you could do to make the day special, no matter the gender: Eat insane amounts of chocolate, watch a guilty pleasure movie, binge a series of at least seven seasons, sit naked on the floor of the shower and let the water wash away your sorrow, play old XBOX 360 games, avoid the curriculum, write yourself uplifting post-its and then silently throw them out in shame, meticulously apply makeup and then cry until it is all gone again, install The Sims and make a version of yourself that has a partner, go for a long and relaxing walk, scroll all the way back to 2009 on your facebook profile, scroll all the way back to 2009 on an aquaintance of a friend’s facebook profile, call mom, drink cocoa with chili or visit Samfunnet and attend a titillating evening with the Norwegian sex shop Kondomeriet and get something comforting for yourself. UKA and Volunteers

«It is important for everyone to join in. It’s not the UKA Board that puts on UKA, but all of the students that work on the project.” said the UKA Leader in 1978, and this is still just as true, twenty UKAs later.

Orig. photo text: “Welcome!” The Ås Spirit Takes Over During UKA During UKA in Ås 2016, about 1,200 students volunteered to create “The Highlight of Your Life,” meaning that about one fourth of the entire student body gave a bit of their time and spirit to UKA. Most student UKAs are made possible by volunteers, but the engagement level in Ås is really something special. Only about 5% of the student body in Trondheim are volunteers, or “UKEFunker” as they say in Trondheim. There is no doubt that the Ås spirit takes over during UKA in Ås. 30 Issue 01 Year 73

Historic “Volunteering” The student body in Ås is currently one of the most engaged, but the level of participation was actually greater before. Today, volunteers are exclusively students from NMBU, but earlier, the Ås spirit reached out to the rest of Ås as well. Along with an obligatory requirement to work “voluntarily,” in the sixties, we had to recruit external volunteers to work for UKA. Luckily, the excitement of UKA had spread to the rest of the residents in Ås, and every year UKA was a success.

Volunteer Positions for Everyone Today the student body is big enough to arrange UKA without external help – with one exception of a single director. Recruiting of volunteers has already begun, and in the first round, 350 volunteers will be signed up for miniUKA. “Being assigned to positions is an ongoing process, so it’s worth it to volunteer early to get your dream position” says Recruitment Leader Trude Rønning Okkenhaug. Finding your dream position shouldn’t be that hard, as UKA has something for everyone, whether you prefer working with a hammer or a pen.

UKA Benefits and UKA Excitement It is the volunteers that make UKA in Ås possible, and their effort does not go unrewarded. The list of benefits is long: “Volunteers receive cheaper prices on tickets and beer, t-shirts, private parties, work recommendation letters and awards.” explains Trude. Volunteers that work during miniUKA will work one night, and receive entrance another night free of charge. The UKA Board really appreciates volunteers, and wants to make the benefits for UKA 2018 even better than the benefits were for UKA 2016. For example, this year students who sign a contract before February 18 will be entered to win an “all inclusive night” during miniUKA, which will include entrance, a cashless card, and food. “There are other benefits of UKA: subject-relevant work experience, networking with others, and last but not least, having a blast.” says a reference book from 1964. And this is definitely still the case today.

In Regards to UKA Finally 2018 is here, and another UKA year is underway. From October 4 – 29, Ås will be transformed as UKA takes over this countryside metropolis once more. UKA in Ås 2018 will be the 48th UKA in a row. In 1924, UKA as we know it today was arranged for the first time, but the festival in general dates back all the way to the 1890’s. Since then the festival has grown enormously, and with revues, concerts, parties, plays and much more, UKA in Ås is currently the longest running cultural festival in Norway. Although the program and line-up is what currently gets the most attention, UKA in Ås consists of more than 26 days with concerts, parties, and much more. UKA in Ås is about the small moments that lead up to the festival, and the excitement that builds up during an UKA year. UKA in Ås is about the relationships and experiences you gain by being a volunteer, and the stress wrinkles you get by being on the UKA Board. UKA in Ås is about enjoying every single moment to the fullest, without worrying that exams are getting closer. It is about all the memories shared during G-weekend, when all the old Ås students come back to “play student” once again, and the impression you get when you attend an UKA event for the first time. With this being said, one cannot ignore the lineup and program. After all, UKA in Ås is also about singing along as loud as you can with your favourite band in Aud.Max., taking part in many daytime and nighttime events, and seeing the UKA Revue two, or maybe even three times. The planning process for UKA in Ås 2018 is well underway, and the UKA Organisation cannot wait to present what they have planned for October – but until then, from April 18-22, miniUKA will give us a little taste of what UKA will have to offer, and will be an anticipated outlet for the excitement that is building up throughout an exhausting semester. In the next few days, we are releasing the miniUKA program and tickets with great pride, and we invite you to join in on the spring’s best long weekend! Two Beers

with Hans Gunnar Gravningen Since Hans arrived in Ås in 2012, he has been more engaged than most. Despite his intention to enjoy his last year in Ås without any leadership positions, he is currently invovled in both Kjernestyret and Konsernet, and has a committee leadership position. He is a calm and easygoing guy, and is quite humble as well; “There are many people here who do a lot more than me, that’s for sure.”

Into Unity and Out of his Comfort Zone

When he came to Ås as a 19 year old to study Economics, he had not realised that it was an UKA-year. Most of the people he knew were 20, and he did not get to join them for all the UKA bars. His fadder was a member of Unity, one of his classmates joined Unity that fall, and he got to know some of the other members through his cross-country skiing group. It was almost inevitable that he would become a member himself, but he forgot the application date that fall. He managed to apply after Christmas and was accepted. “It seemed like a nice, close group of guys. It also sounded fun to build bars and perform in revues. It was things like that that made me want to join.” Things picked up quickly, and in the fall of 2013 he was elected as the Treasurer for Unity for one year. It took a bit of time for him to come out of his comfort zone and get involved. “Just the thought of being the Treasurer for Unity seemed a bit intimidating, but you manage. Everything seems a lot scarier from a distance.” He also had to test his boundaries when they held their revue. “I had never been on stage before, but it is super fun when you do it with a group of good friends. I can’t dance, no one in Unity can, and none of us can sing either, so you just have to go for it.” When he was finished as Treasurer, he wanted to be the President of Unity. He was elected as President one year later, in the fall of 2015.

A Year on the Samfunnet Board

In the mean time, he also ran for Treasurer of the Samfunnet Board at the general assembly in the fall of 2014. His biggest motivation to run was to have fun. “I was very fond of Samfunnet, and everything about the work seemed really interesting. I had spoken to people who had been on the Samfunnet Board before, and they enjoyed it a lot.” According to him, having the position on your CV is just a bonus. Even though he was a bit modest, that didn’t stop him from getting involved. “I wasn’t the one speaking the loudest at meetings at the beginning. Instead, I tried to gain some wisdom from those who had already been on the board for half a year.” His expectation of having fun was fulfilled. That year, the Samfunnet Board worked on “Project Flower,” which meant applying decisions made in the Board to other levels of the organisation. “It was insanely fun. I feel that we got a lot done on so many levels.” He has only good things to say about the others that he worked with on the Board that year; “I was very lucky with my fellow board members, they were really nice people. I hadn’t known any of them from before, but we became a really united group.”

A Farm Heir and Troublemaker

As he was approaching the end of his Bachelor’s in Economics, he decided to change his original plan of studying a Master’s in Issue 01 Year 73 33

Two beers economics. He was tired of economics, but didn’t feel like he was finished studying. As the eldest of three siblings, he was next in line to inherit his family’s vegetable farm in Sande in Vestfold. So naturally, he decided to switch his study to Plant Sciences. His grandfather was the one who had been most concerned about who would take over the farm, which is something Hans wants to do. “There was never much pressure at home to take over the farm, but I think my grandfather was relieved when I said I would take over.” Hans has helped out on the farm ever since he was 10 years old, and he became more and more involved in the business. When he completes his Bachelor’s Degree in Plant Sciences, he will look for a job where he can combine both economics and plant sciences, before he eventually takes over the farm. It is clear that growing up on the farm influenced his decision to take over it. His grandfather was the “after school” teacher for him and his siblings, and took them along for things like treehouse building. There was also always enough space on the farm to bring friends home to visit. When asked about how many friends there were in his friend group, he answered without hesitation: 12. They have kept in touch, and meet every year for cabin trips, boys’ weekends, and Christmas dinners. In contrast to the easygoing guy we have here today, apparently in primary school he could often be found out in the hallway with the teacher. His friend group often had conflicts with some of the others at school. “We did well in class, but we fought a bit with the others. We were after all ‘the cool group’, so maybe it was a little difficult to see things from the teacher’s point of view.” Hans was the first in his friends group to start studying, and the last one to finish. This has it’s advantages – he is never allowed to pay when they go out on the town. “Maybe I will just keep pretending that I’m studying, that I’m just taking another year.”

Cross-Country Skiing and the Waxing Team

He got his interest in cross-country skiing from his dad. His dad took the kids out on skis every week. It was something they did

for fun: “He was never strict and went around yelling at us or tried to train us. We were always allowed to do what we wanted.” In middle school, he and a couple of skiing friends became local celebrities. A couple of their teachers wanted to pay them to have their skis waxed and prepared, and afterwards they got more and more customers. “It spread to the local newspaper, and eventually we ended up on the front page of ‘The Drammen Times.’ It was a bit too much, we were 14 year old students after all. But it was very fun, and we earned a lot of money. Our parents bought the equipment so we didn’t have any expenses, they thought it was great that we were operating a business rather than ‘hanging out in the city center.’” In high school, Hans chose to focus on sports as a line of study, with a focus on cross country. “The problem in Norway is that there are way too many people who want to do the same.” Many of the skiers he competed with are now amongst the top athletes in Norway. But for him, it was always something he had done for the fun of it, and he still goes cross-country skiing today.

The End of the Ås Journey

2018 is his final year in Ås. The original plan was to relax this year without any leadership positions, but that is definitely not how it turned out. “Since spring 2016 I have been involved in Konsernet. I also have a committee leadership position, and am in Kjernestyret. On top of that, I, along with one other, are the Bar-officers for Unity’s UKA bar in the fall. ” When asked if he might need to be in these positions in order to enjoy his final year, he fully agreed. “It’s fun, that’s why you do it.” There is only one things about his time here in Ås that Hans would like to have changed. “I was pushed to run for positions at the Business School during my first year in Ås, but I didn’t dare to run. Every time I have been asked to run for the position later, I think back about how much I regret not taking the positions. So the thing I regret is not beginning to run for special positions already in my first year.” This should be good inspiration for all of the firsties that are looking to become more active and get involved!

Hans’s Friends Say: This innocent skier from Sande took Ås by storm. Even though he’s very careful and calm, he does so many weird things while drunk. Most people have met Hans at one point or another, holding a drink in his hand that he should have stopped drinking long before. Despite his hatred of TIX, he’s very fond of russe season and takes it very seriously, while studying is simply a hobby. A little limerick to honour him: An innocent boy was called Tassen Moved away to a strange place He was born anew In Unity And ever since then he has never farted. (In Norwegian this rhymes. Sadly, in English it doesn’t.) For a farm heir who will take over his family farm, to end up in Unity is not something anyone expected. Nonetheless, it was a completely natural choice, and his contributions towards Samfunnet and Unity have been impressive. Even though he’s reaching the end of his studies and beginning to calm down a bit, his inner party animal is always ready to come out. I am still not quite sure exactly what he meant by that. But I’m so glad I met Hans Gunnar and got to know him through Unity and our activities in Ås. Lately, this farmer from Vestfold has exhibited other skills than being good at drinking overpriced vodka and Champagne. First it was a pain in the ass. Now my shopping habits have changed, I’ve adapted it. Maybe it’s a good thing.

DUMPSTER FRIDGE DIVING AT PENTAGON The night before January 3rd between 02:48 and 03:19 there was a break-in in one of the apartments at Løa. What was stolen, you may ask? Food was stolen. According to the surveillance footage, it appears to be the same person who broke into an apartment in Kringla on Sunday the 18th of December.

Naturvitarane is hosting a breakfast lecture and conversation about Norway’s future investments. How will we achieve economic stability post oil? Is there any untapped potential? Is it possible to find the balance between environmentally conscious investments, that are still profitable and provide a good work space? Several visionaries presented their ideas for what the future would look like.

The Government’s Strategy Stig Schjølseth

Special Advisor for green competetive energy in Klima and Miljødepartementet (Climate and Environmental Department) The goverment’s goal is to achieve a balance where there is increased growth and lower greenhouse gas emissions. We need to figure out how Norway can economically succeed with a greener future in mind. An increased number of cities all over the world are being forced to make changes. Using buses that run off of electricity instead of oil in large cities is one example of this. There is a strong political push in several major countries, like Germany and China, to make these changes. Both of these countries have heavily invested in solar power, which is becoming cheaper and cheaper day by day. The market in this world is changing.

Taking Action

We need to take advantage of our strengths and get to work by putting trust in one another and cooperating. We need to ensure that businesses can grow whilst being environmentally friendly by having a pre-emptive framwork of requirements and a holistic political front. Organisations that pollute need to be fined and funding should go toward research and education. The public should invest in green, that is, sustainable indsutries. It should become easier to make a conscious choice as companies should be required to publish information on their greenhouse gas emissions and environmental efforts.

How do we take Advantage of thse opportunities in Bioeconomy? Solveig Schytz

Venstre - The Left Norway has vast marine resources that can benefit from innovate and practical applications, in line with environmental requirements. You need to start early to inspire innovative ideas on land and in water. Everything starts at school. One must learn to be creative. There must be a focus on research, education and facilitating entrepreneurships and innovations. The public should invest in green industries. This is achieved by industry and research forming a relationship founded on trust and cooperation. Therefore, we must invest in data and entreprenourships.

Bottlenecks and Challenges for Green Growth Per Olav Skjervold Vitenparken

One must have the motivation to make changes and one must recruit and inspire the younger generation. I believe that bioeconomics has the ability to take over from oil in the long term, but it must be facilitated. Take a look at the aquaculture industry, which is the largest animal agriculture industry in Norway. Fish is one of the best sources of protein. When different departments collaborate, there is a greater possibility for potenital new ideas. There is much to be earned from marine research. We are in the process of an IT revolution that provides many new opportunities. The IT industry can collaborate with the chemical and biological industries. This may result in a smarter agriculture. Where there would a reduction in pesticide sprays by 99.5%. We also most likely will get individually orientated technology in aquaculture.

Prevention of Disease - a Prerequisite for Green and Blue Growth Espen Rimstad

Professor, NMBU The shift to a green society should actually be considered a shift a blue society. 72% of the earth’s surface is covered in ocean. Aquaculture can produce a higher quantity of food on a specified surface area than bovine. Aquaculture is three dimensional and therefor requires less surface area, whereas agriculture is two dimensional and requires a considerable increase in surface area for the same food production. In Norway, 200 km2 of ocean is used for aquaculture and 10 200 km2of land is used for agriculture. To solve challenges facing the aquaculture industry, such as disease control, escape, lice and waste processing, it may help to introduce this topic early at school. If these issues can be solved, it would provide a huge opportunity for growth in this industry

After Oil

During the discussion after the presentation, the panel concluded that Norway needs more reliable sources of economic growth apart from oil. Today, half of the countries resources go towards oil and gas. Instead, the country should be investing in greener alternatives. Unfortunately, the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy is constantly searching for new areas to extract oil from. Can we, or more specifically should we, change? Our neighbouring countries are doing fine without an income from the oil industry, proving to us that it is possible to have a thriving economy without those extra profits.

Empty Promises

The crowd directed criticism towards the politicians who came with “empty” promises: • Norwegian politicians haven’t done enough to improve the situation. It is not for a lack of knowledge, the knowledge is there, but it has to be put into practice. Solveig Schyts answers: • We have to set large goals, and hope for the best. We do not have a financial problem, good ideas will recieve funding.

Only time will tell if Norway can earn some green as we shift to green.

Hankattforeningen st.1902 står som en eksponent for det dynamiske – for evnen og viljen til å trenge frem på stier hvor ortodoks fanatisme setter sperringer for menneskeheten. En Hankatt er en som går foran og baner vei så andre kan følge etter. En som ikke er redd for å ta sjanser, gjøre ting som aldri har blitt gjort før og utfordre normen. Nyskapning og tilpasning er, og har alltid vært, sentralt for Hankattforeningen og dens eksistens. Samtidig er våre lange tradisjoner også svært viktige. Administrerende Direktør har brukt Floss siden Hirsch gjorde det i 1902. Den originale hatten til Hirsch ble faktisk brukt i 55 år for den tilslutt måtte byttes ut. Direktørklubba som brukes i dag ble uthentet fra Pasvikdalen i Sør-Varanger ca. 1930. Det er viktig at nyskapningen ikke går på bekostning av tradisjonene, men like viktig at tradisjonene ikke er til hinder for nyskapningen. Det er denne symbiosen er essensen i Hankattkulturen. Slik lyder Hirsch’ ord: Håndens tukt over Kulturen til foryngende frukt.

Skål, Salig Johan Leuthäuser Hirsch! Johan Hirsch var en av de største menn dette rike noen gang har sett. Sammen med sin venn Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson er han den beste taleren i Norges historie. Han er den viktigste personen for norsk landbruk og selv om de færreste vet det, er det svært mange av studentene ved Agraren som aldri hadde vært her hadde det ikke vært for Hirsch. Han bygget opp Universitetet fra en slikk og ingenting til å bli Norges nasjonale landbruksskole. Det er på grunn av ham at Ås i dag kalles Agrarmetropolen. Hans ånd og arv lever videre i dag gjennom Hankattforeningen og er med på å forme dagens unge menn til å bli klassiske herremenn, som Hirsch selv var. Det er dette vi kaller Hankattånden. «Nytt semester - nye dansemuligheter. Det kan rapporteres om at det har rykket godt i dansefoten til flere av våre medlemmer i løpet av juleferien og januarblokka, og vi gleder oss nå til å danse oss gjennom vårparallellen. Det er mye å se frem til det kommende semester; lysere kvelder, høyere temperaturer og flere fridager enn vi hadde i høst. Undertegnede ser spesielt frem til lysere kvelder og høyere temperaturer når broddene kan pakkes bort, og man ikke trenger tre ekstra lag med klær for å gå frem og tilbake til dansetrening. I tillegg ser vi frem til mange dansbare kvelder på Samfunnet og i Mini-UKA, ikledd våre blå snekkerbukser og burgunderrøde sløyfer. Det nye styret ser frem til et givende semester med mye dans og mye moro, og håper semesteret blir som en dans på roser for alle Ås-studentene! Bull-DÅs Kristin Einan Storeide»

StudFadd er en fadderordning mellom studenter ved NMBU og barn med innvandrerbakgrunn i Ås kommune. Faddere og styremedlemmer jobber for integrering og bygger opp forhold til fadderbarna gjennom ulike aktiviteter. I løpet av hvert semester har vi ulike arrangementer som for eksempel påskeverksteder og grilling. Denne måneden har vi avholdt generalforsamling for å offisielt tilsette de nye styremedlemmene som ble valgt inn i høst. Nå utlyser vi ny fadderansvarlig, og kommer derfor til å stå på stand på campus den nærmeste tiden. Det vil også henge flyers med info rundt omkring på campus. Dersom du er interessert i å bli vårt nye styremedlem, eller evt. bli fadder, er det bare å ta kontakt med oss i styret. Vi gleder oss til flere spennende arrangementer det kommende semesteret!

New Year, New AU and a New Student Commitee! On Saturday the 3rd of February, a cold, sunlit day, a bus filled to the brim with newly elected student representatives drove to Sørmarka Hotel in full sing-along. They were well recieved by AU with goodiebags, discussion topics and fruit. A heated debate broke out over study qualiy and campus plans, followed by the song “Jeg og Thorvald og Johannes” during dinner. Later in the evening, the representatives revealed their competitive side in a game of Kahoot. Thereafter, they started building friendships while listening to piano music and having engaged conversations with one another. The lively group rode back to Ås on Sunday the 4th of February, scrambling to get into the heated Festsalen with other elected representatives from all corners of the student body! The handsome Deputy Rector Solve inspired the hall to complete silence and shining eyes. The representatives were then informed on both student participation and conference culture. (Apparantly it is not ok to have group bought suits and flares...) AU is immensly impressed, and is looking forward to a spirited spring!
