THE RIGHT CHOICES Welcome home Torvald and Tora!
to
Agrarmetropolen,
And a special welcome to everybody new! The next couple years have so much to offer you. I can personally guarantee that your time here in Ås will leave a lasting mark on you. Previous Editor in Chief Lars Raaen probably said it best: “I found myself in the middle of a field in Follo.” Many of you are struggling to choose insurance, volunteer work, teams, fraternities and jobs. Ås has a lot to offer, and many choices you make now will affect your time at Ås. Other people’s choices will also have a big impact on your life. Last spring, Studentsamfunnet’s General Assembly elected a new UKEboard, Leader of Studentsamfunnet and several others. Anne Tove Græsdal Tornes Våge was elected as the next Editor of Tuntreet, a great
choice. The issue you hold in your hand is proof of that. There is still some time until the next General Assembly, but I recommend that you already now go and mark your calendars – 25th of October. Right now however, there is another election in focus. I don’t think I am the only one that feels pressured by the older generation. We have to remember to make our own choices. Focus on your values, and let your own point of view shine through. That ’s what I did. I’m sorry, dear student counselor, I am not taking SKOG303. I’d rather have time to be social. Remember to register for classes before the 16th of September! And I hope you voted in the election on the 9th of September.

The IHA-building, IH-what? Guro Størdal Journalist
Have you ever wondered what or where the IHA-building is? Maybe you just started wondering while reading this? Either way, you should join me for a tour. Camus Ås has many different crooks and crannies. As one of Norway’s eldest universities, it has been built, remodelled and torn down several times, and is still under development. A building some may have heard of, but never visited, is the IHA-building or Husdyrfagbygningen (the Department of Animal and Aquacultural Sciences), which may be a more familiar term. That was at least the case for me, and when an opportunity for a private tour presented itself, my curiosity had to be satisfied. I was not disappointed; it was a building with several strange rooms and surprises. Invaluable guides The guides for the tour were Merete and Oda who are my colleagues in Tuntreet and students at the Department of Animal and Aquacultural Sciences. They had been exploring a few weeks earlier and had discovered many new sites, even after being students for several years. As a complete stranger to the building it was good to have someone who knew where the stairs and doors led to. “It isn’t that many whom have classes here, but there are some biology, genetics- and chemistry-subjects that take place here that people come wandering confused asking for directions to. The worst part is when you’re trying to find an office, that is almost impossible”, says Oda while we wander through a door, up a staircase, through another door, turn and are suddenly standing in a new hallway. Centrefold ladies on the wall.
Some of the first sites we visit are lecture-, sitting- and reading rooms. One of the

lecture rooms, H115, is “long, narrow and outdated”, according to the guides. The other lecture room, H109, is “2% newer, and has a window! It is nicer to be in, and there are often lectures in the evening (fagkvelder), hunting courses, and similar events. Although, there can occur a smell of animal foodstuffs through the ventilation”, says Oda, and she’s quite right; there is a small hint of feed concentrate in the air. The sitting room for students on Animal Science is redecorated, and now has a kitchen with a coffee maker, microwave and a kettle. The walls are decorated with centrefold ladies, of the type NRF (Norwegian Red). Reading rooms are also an important part of school buildings, and the masters reading seats were some of the better that I’ve seen. They had shelves, flowers and pictures. “It is Hakuna Matata here during lunch”, says Merete. Down into the dark After seeing bright, redecorated rooms the tour heads downwards. While many have skeletons in their closets, the IHA-building keeps them in the basement. “We had our own skeleton room earlier, but they needed the space for meeting rooms, so all of this was banished to the basement”, says Oda and gesticulates towards the skeletons, a number of unidentifiable animal parts and other bones. We go further in, into another room where we find more bones, antlers and lots of different animal cast figures. “We think it’s a bit sad that all off this just lays here in the basement and collects dust, so we are going to speak with the faculty head about getting a room for them or something a bit more worthy”, the guides say. “If not, you can just ask to hang out here while watching a horror movie”.
TUNTREET Gradually growing Then the tour heads back up, through stairs and hallways and doors. At the end of a hallway there was a door which had a small ramp up to the door frame. “Construction started in 1966, but has since then grown gradually as required”, says Oda. We visit among other places the hayloft where there previously was a real hayloft. Earlier the animals were brought into the building for food analysis and such. It has now been rebuilt into offices for different companies, but there still lingers a tiny whiff of hay and concentrate in the walls. On the third floor you find the professionals within breeding and genetics. “We are very proud of this department. It was among other things where Norwegian salmon farming had its origin” said the guides. When we leave the third floor, we go down a new staircase and there we find a surprise: a bullhead with glassy eyes and a ring in its nose. The guides don’t really know where it originated from, why it is hung up there or how long it has been there, but it’s a fun curiosity. Down some more stairs, through doors and new hallways we arrive in a new basement. Here the horror movie vibe is even stronger. A skeleton without a head with the note “foal/calf?” is standing in the hall, and at the end of the hallway is the library. In here, there are not just books, but several stuffed poultry and old things, which fill the shelves. “We learned about this two weeks ago. Apparently, the library was earlier in a room that is now used for meetings, so it was moved down here”, explain the guides. The future? When I ask about what they think will happen to the building in the future, our guides both shrug. “Firstly, the rest of the asbestos must be removed”, says Oda, “and then I guess it will keep growing gradually by need. Refurnishing is happening room by room, so eventually they will get through the whole building. So much has happened in the last few years already!” One thing is for sure, it is an original building. There is a lot more to discover then what we had time for on our little tour, and much more than there is room for in a Tuntreet-article. If given the opportunity, I would definitely recommend taking a tour! If you don’t know where the building is located one can luckily find it on MazeMap with the search “IHA”.
One of the building’s many curiosities.

Samfunnet opens their doors for the first party night of the semester! It is Wednesday, the beer taps are open once again and TØFL supplies the entertainment for the night! March of the students A new semester has begun and NMBU is full of new students who are going to experience Samfunnet for the first time, along with many old Bodega-users who have missed their second home over the summer. But the Bodega isn’t the focus tonight. The indie-pop band TØFL is taking the stage! Catchy pop-rock in a representative dialect. The group consists of Hans Markus Riisdal (vocals), Thomas Campe Pettersen (guitar), Tobias Lidegran (bass) and Mathias Eeg (drums). TØFL gave out their debut single “Alle andre får lov” in January 2017, and have after this worked their way up in the music industry. They have previously been a warm up band for Sløtface, who have also been at Samfunnet to perform.
anything else than fields to offer, other than Samfunnet and the university. The answer to this is known to many students: no, that is just about all we have out here. The group seemed eager for the night, and I ask what they expect when it comes to the turnout of the crowd. “The event is SOLD OUT! So that is going to be good!” Tobias offers, and it seems that there is a general agreement in the band that it will be nice to perform for the students. Secret role model? After having sat in the room for 15 minutes I can’t help myself and have to ask: “Have
Tøflus from “Jul i Skomakergata” been an inspiration to the band?”. The group chuckles a bit. “No, but when we became NRK P3’s Urørt we were called up by a guy pretending to be in his 60’s”, Hans Markus Riisdal says. “He called and said that they were going to produce “Jul I Skomakergata 2” and wanted very much for TØFL to record the intro music. After a few confusing minutes it became clear that we had won P3’s Urørt”. Both me and the photographer laugh a bit after this revelation.
Sold out? Perfect! After a quick chit chat, we asked the group what it is like to visit Ås. The vocalist answers that he thinks it is idyllic, and that it was a nice drive out. Tobias also thought it was a nice place but wondered if Ås had

Hans Markus Riisdal stage diving. Tradition from year to year Later on the students have gotten themselves to Samfunnet and are ready for the concert of the night. The sound of a happy student bellowing “Jeg og n’Thorvald og Johannes” is quickly drowned out by the band making their entrance on stage. It was full out from the beginning and the band gets the whole room jumping with a tambourine and an over-excited Hans Markus. After a few songs Hans Markus gets the whole room to sit down, and the night reaches a high point when Tobias climbs up on the speaker next to the stage, right before Hans Markus stage-dives into the audience.

After a well performed show we again meet the guys in the backroom to ask how they felt about the show. TØFL seems very happy with the concert and as we enter backstage the band has begun climbing along the wall to write their logo among all the artist names. The gang is
fully content, and everyone is smiling from ear to ear. The band gives their thanks for the show and ends it all with apologizing to the poor boy who was driven to the hospital. I look at him and exclaims “what?”. No, just write that! That is gonna be good! Good cooperation to reach the top.

Lively start to the semester with CLMD Jane Bergan Journalist
Vegard Høgi Olsen Fotokomitéen (The Photo Committee)
Friday the 6th of August everything was once again ready for semester kickoff at Samfunnet. This time it was the DJ CLMD who made his way to Audmax, and he made sure to give the students a start to the school year they wouldn’t soon forget. Blinking lights, smoke machines, glowsticks and beach-balls hovering over the crowd early on set the mood for the night. As soon as you set foot in Audmax you could both hear and feel the bass in your spine, and the crowd jumping and dancing in front of the stage made it clear that this was something the students had looked forward to, and rightly so.

There was also an abundance of remixes of good old songs, like Levels by Avicii, More Than You Know by Axwell & Ingrosso, I Just Came to Say Hello by Martin Solveig featuring Dragonette, and Call On Me by Eric Prydz. The sing-along-mood and dance moves were on point, and even when the concert had ended the mood was high and the beer glasses full. Semester kickoff really set the bar high when it comes to concerts and parties, so you can all look forward to everything Samfunnet i Ås has to offer for the rest of the fall!

In our society, you get bombarded with pictures and opinions from all around, whether one wants to or not. This can lead many to feel pressured about their bodies, and even if it is normal to experience it, it is still seen as taboo to talk about it.
Victor Okpe Translator
Who feels the pressure? In an attempt to get the conversation going with the Ă…s students, we made a survey which we shared on Facebook, and the results show that quite a few notice the effects of body-image pressure. Of the 74
responses we received, over 2/3 were from women, and over half were age 21-23. Thus, we don’t have the largest and most varied target group, but the trends among the students are clear enough to see. A clear majority has felt this pressure, 72.6% state that they have experienced it before.

TT TABOO How noticeable is it? Of course, there’s a difference between thinking, day in and day out, that you’ll never be pretty enough, and to have overheard a snide comment about yourself five years ago. “Luckily”, “merely” just above 10% of the participants state that body-image pressure is something they feel often, while most only notice it now and then. Different people have different experiences, and not all are as affected by others’ views. On a scale from one to ten, the participants were asked to rank the influence of pressure on their self-image, where one is “I am rarely bothered” and ten is “I am very bothered”. One could almost view it as a nice surprise that 54.1% replied three or below, but that still means that for about half, this pressure has a relatively large impact on their daily lives and their self-esteem. Where does the pressure come from? When the participants stated where the pressure came from, it is probably not surprising that most feel that media, especially social media like Instagram, is a big source of insecurity. For a portion of the participants, family and friends, especially those from lower and upper secondary school, are often points of origin for pressure. Pressure, that they do not even know they are creating. A different source for body image pressure that repeated
itself was “myself ”, which also shows up in comparisons. Many students admitted that simply seeing people in public can mess up one’s self-esteem, no words necessarily need to be said. For many, it is enough to see attractive people. By seeing people on the beach, at parties, at the gym, or even on the street, one starts comparing oneself to them. One doesn’t need more than to see a tall guy with big muscles, or a thin girl with all the right shapes, before one thinks that one doesn’t live up to this standard. The replies which hit the hardest, however, are those which in the end said “absolutely everything”. The fact that some are at a point where their self-image is so negative, means that body image pressure clearly is a problem which must be acted upon. How can we improve?
only post the “perfect summer body”. For others, it could mean spending less time on social media, maybe even taking a long break from all of it. The first step in culling the pressure is to start the conversation on body positivism, loving oneself and the fantastic body one has. This is often easier said than done, but one of my favourite responses was from a participant who stated that the best motivation is “doing something that makes me feel strong and looking myself in the mirror and repeating that I’m good enough over and over again. Being with more people that I trust, looking at different types of bodies, and seeing that each body is just as pretty as the next”. Another student summed it up nicely: “Boost your selfesteem. You’re good enough”.
Tuntreet asked the students what measures should be taken to reduce body image pressure, and we got varied and good suggestions. Focusing on being healthy, not just thin, was something that many mentioned. Other suggestions were mentioned like better labelling of edited photos, less retouching of photos and advertisements, having models and display mannequins in more average sizes, and staying away from role models and influencers who make you judge yourself according to unrealistic criteria. For some, that could mean unfollowing those who

What is UKA i Ås? - UKA i Ås is Norway’s longest cultural festival and is arranged in October every other year. The festival offers 26 days of concerts, revues, parties and talks, among other things. UKA i Ås has its roots in the UKErevue and has been arranged since 1924. In 2020, UKA will be celebrating it’s 50th anniversary here in Ås. Why should Thorvald and Tora get involved with UKA i Ås? - The volunteers are the living core of UKA i Ås. Without our volunteers it would not be possible to carry out the festival. Being a volunteer at UKA i Ås gives experience, knowledge and awareness that you cannot get from a textbook. The committees, blocks and organizations form an incredible bond. You get to be a part of something bigger than yourself and see your ideas be brought to life. Simply put, it is a really fun and giving learning experience. Which experiences have you taken with you from your position as committee leader for UKA i Ås 2018? - This was the best time of my life. I got to explore an area far different from my studies and got experiences, memories and friends I will carry with me for the reset of my life. Being able to see the finished result after one year of hard work and seeing people enjoy themselves all of October was also an indescribable feeling.
Fimke Frederika Pijfers UKEleader
What are you expecting for UKA 2020? - That it will be COMPLETELY WILD! We are going to continue to develop old successful ideas and try out new exciting concepts. A varied opening
The board members at Samfunnet opened the show with a beautiful version of the national anthem of Ås, Jeg og n’Thorvald og Johannes, accompanied by bells. Traditional, original and charming Tuntreet rolls the dice and lands on a six! Next on stage is UKA, whom have wiped the dust off an old classic from UKErevyen 2018. Hankattforeningen st. 1902 then begins their traditional flambéing of their new aspirants. – “It is the only day that some
of us are a bit nervous about – But it’s fun looking back at it now, says the aspirants. The importance of keeping such traditions, both Tuntreet and the aspirants agree upon. Crash course in revue culture Several other unions follow UKA and show off old revue hits. Among others NGA reintroduces a horny container deposit machine, and IVAR with the IVARband. Despite good vocals, it was still the bassist who stole the show. Another trend was dance routines. Aside from the dancing unions Dance Ås, better known as DÅs and The Swing Club Snurrebassen, both Collegium Alfa and Feminin & Formen brought their best moves to the stage. In comparison to previous revue numbers and performances’ one can find oneself a bit disappointed that the unions chose to introduce themselves with dance. We know that they are capable of much more. Rusty start The evening did not proceed entirely painlessly. Some clumsy microphone
switches led to a good deal of waiting, and the music stopped several times – among others during DÅs’ dance routine, and Koneklubben Freidig´s song performance. It may seem that the machinery has turned somewhat rusty over the summer. Koneklubben (The Wife Club) still managed to live up to their name and went all in with their signature song «La det gro» or «Let it grow». Oiled man’s bodies The Forestry union stormed the stage with their signature two favourite things – beer and chainsaws. Opening a beer with a snus package is cool, but this goes beyond anything you have seen before. The chainsaw show is an old favourite, but this year came with a plot twist when forestry agent Jon Endre Bjørnbet ended the show by pouring motor oil all over himself. From one greasy body to several – the Fraternity Unity’s naked routine went smoothly this year, and private parts stayed private – at least until the afterparty.

Meet the new Dean at NM BU
Sjur Baardsen takes on his new role as Dean right at the start of 2020. He has decided on two main tasks in his new position.
Margit Fausko Journalist
Former NMBU Dean, Mari Sundli Tveit, resigned from her position in April, about two years before her contract expired. August 1th took forestry-economist and former Head of Faculty MINA, Sjur Baardsen, over the Dean position. So far, he will reside as Dean for the next two years.
a problem with his throat prevents him from consuming as much as before. Earlier he could drink amounts that would make him both sweat and shiver when the clock turned four. A change from his position as Head of Faculty is that he no longer boils his own tea.
Tea > coffee
Sjur confirms that it is a bit hectic being the new Dean, but not necessarily busier than before – he has a good support team around him. His calendar is no longer his own with his new title, and much more has
- I don’t serve coffee, only tea, says the new Dean, as I enter the Dean’s office at Cirkus on a Wednesday afternoon. - It is my most feminine side, he adds and explains that 22 Issue 06 Year 74

to be delegated. - As Head of Faculty I manged to speak with everyone, as Dean that won’t be possible”. He will continue Mari's spirit, by actively involving the students, and is clear about wanting to be a visible leader whom is constantly feeling the mood of the organisation. In Ås and at Adamstuen. Meaning for «sustainability» Sjur is looking forward to when the veterinarians arrive in 2020.

As dean I manged to speak with everyone, as priciple that won’t be possible.
- It brings opportunities for more integrated academic environments, especially connected to KBM and BIOVIT, he says and predicts that the bar will be lowered. Creating a united university, not just physically, is a task he views as one of his main missions as Dean. The second main task is one of his own passionate causes. - «University of Sustainability», that is something we like to call ourselves he begins.
- But can we give an exact answer on what we mean by that term today? Not as well as we should, he emphasizes. - We must give it more meaning. Therefore, the new Dean wants to start an initiative for an evaluation with the 17 UN sustainable development goals as a basis. Which activities at NMBU belong in which goal? - Several of the goals are either overlapping or contradicting each other, he explains.
- If one simply maximises food production it will certainly effect other sustainable development goals. The same goes for maximising energy production or forest manufacturing. Or biological diversity. It is all a balance of different goals. Sjur wants a more comprehensive understating of the term sustainable, more holism. - In this field we are going to be the best. At least good, he concludes. Issue 06 Year 74 23
TUNTREET Dean golden chain NMBU is most definitely relevant when facing the climate crisis and nature crisis. This educational institution was in its early days also the nation’s most important, then under the name the Norwegian College of Agriculture (NLH). I ask Sjur what he thinks of the decoration on campus. - This is Hogwarts, and I am Dumbledore, he responds quickly with a smile, and expresses a certain pride to belong to such a beautiful university. In this esteemed situation I find myself thinking it would be appropriate for me to get to see his Dean-cloak, with the accompanying golden chain. Apparently, it is not. - It is holy, he replies shortly, and punctures the idea. - A similar chain was once stolen on a Christmas party, an eager Øystein Johnsen shoots in, deputy priciple of research, from the room next door.
- That is not that relevant for this interview, urges the Dean, but Øystein leaps into the office and enthusiastically goes on about the golden chain. The chain had in fact been stolen before in a car theft, but at the time reappeared in Skien. Now the aforementioned treasure, which-pricemust-not-be-named is being held in a very much restricted location. Tuntreet wishes the newly appointed Dean all the best of luck in the years to come. We look forward to a completed fusion and defined sustainability!
FIVE FAST ONES What do you keep on your nightstand? - That is a secret. Pilsner or bayer? - Pilsner. Will you be enjoying a beer at the Bodega this year ? - Not sure. What will be NMBUs new name?
This is Hogwarts, I am Dumbledore!
- Do I have to answer quickly? Maybe BU Bærekraftsuniversitetet (University of sustainability)? What is your relationship to Instagram and selfies? - Selfies: no. For the time being I’m getting help setting up Instagram. With the content that is.

Welcome all new students! Anne Tove Græsdal Våge Journalist Translated by: Solvår Sundsdal Hanna Bruun Tørnby Photographer
After a week with intense introduction to the student life here at Ås, also known as Buddy Week, the time had come for the beloved Matriculation Ceremony. People from all over the world came to become an academic citizen at NMBU. I still remember my Matriculation Ceremony as if it was yesterday. Seeing all the new and excited students, whom now will experience the Ås spirit for three to five years, bring forward a little tear in my eye every year. One could feel the joy in the air, even though the weather wasn’t perfect. The procession began; the ceremony started. First there was music, and then came the speeches. The first speech was held by the Dean, note that it was the new Dean Sjur Baardsen. Then there was the Student Leader Tord Hauge, and after him the international speech. The Best Lecturer and Best Thesis was awarded before the new citizens were called up on stage. The part we all remember the best from the Matriculation Ceremony. One faculty after another entered the stage and greeted the Dean, Head of Faculty and Deputy Rector of Research. After everyone had been up on stage and the procession ended, it was time for food and the academic exhibition. The new students, buddies and other guests waited excitedly for the concert. This year’s performance was by 18 years old HALIE, whom impressed her audience. The Matriculation Ceremony is always a highlight during fall, this year like the years before, for both old and new students. From one academic citizen to a new one, I would just like to say welcome!

TWO BEERS WITH FREDRIK(STAD) FORSBERG ELLINGSEN The year 1993 gave so much to today’s students at Agrarmetropolen. Not only was the world wide web made publicly available and the Olympics ‘94 were just around the corner: it was also the year that Fredrik Forsberg Ellingsen came to the world.

TWO BEERS Caroline Lensjø-Alvin Journalist Hanna Bruun Tørnby Photographer Translated by: Ingrid Tangvik
Fredrik has been active at Samfunnet and in the student life at Ås since coming here. He has since become a known figure to many of us. In this edition of Two Beers we will get to know the man behind the involvment. Fredrik before Ås If you have ever heard Fredrik talk or met him on May 17th, it is not hard to guess where he is from. Both the dialect and the beautiful bunad are good pointers. Growing up in a small community outside of Fredrikstad offered a lot of fun and security. “I’ve always appreciated coming from a small place, in addition to the proximity I had to my family,” he says. A childhood characterized by close family relationships, long summers at Hvaler, sun and nature has contributed to Fredrik’s love for nature and safe, close relationships. Initially, Ås was not the destination for Fredrik, who was at both the Norwegian School of Sport and the University of Oslo before finding his way to Agraren. He thought he had to make more use of his math and physics background, and the choice landed on engineering. The direction became industrial economics, an education with a lot of breadth and many elements. In retrospect, it has been confirmed to be the right choice for him. Fredrik had been to Ås a few times before starting here in 2015, which helped to make Ås his first choice. “Although it is close to Fredrikstad, only 35 minutes from door to door, it is far enough away that you can be independent,” Fredrik points out.
wanted to accomplish and saying “let’s do it”. Listening to others’ ideas and desires can benefit many. When you volunteer, you have to get a sense of mastery and something that develops one’s self into something more than what you were when you first started. “When you find the people who are interested in it, it’s fun to run a student society!”, says Fredrik. Student life, no matter the cost During his stay in Oslo, Fredrik was engaged as a student representative for his class and in the social society that belonged to his studies. “At NMBU you become much more interconnected across fields of study in a truly unique way not found anywhere else.” Fredrik has been through most of the duties and positions at Ås: Stedsforening, Nordisk Landskamp, the Board of Samfunnet, OKD (Senior Konsern Director), Mannskoret Over Rævne, party manager, SiÅs, the faculty board, you name it. A very good combo for a person who is stimulated by doing a lot. When school is not always enough, he fills up his time with other things. “I think I have an extreme case of FOMO, fear of missing out. I think I suffer from unsocial anxiety”. He has always been incredibly committed and has never managed to steer clear of roles where you can create some added value for people around you and generally just have fun. Fredrik applied to Mannskoret Over Rævne twice before actually appearing on a song admission. The third time, right after he had joined the Board of Samfunnet and didn’t really have time for one more thing,
was the right time to join. He joined and was admitted to Holmenkollen during the Ski World Cup, which ended with a hospital visit and intravenous for a torn muscle in the shoulder. But Fredrik looks back on the admission as an experience and is very happy that he joined. What remains Although it sounds like Fredrik has been involved most of the time, there is one thing in particular he would like to accomplish during his last year at Ås. “I haven’t been able to finish 3000 meters of beer,” he says rather embarrassed. He thrives best in the speaker role and has tried to combine both sports and leadership. One year he was a field reporter and ran alongside the race. Fredrik ended up in the tourist class in the fifth round, which he thinks is extra embarrassing as he has previously done both running and athletics. “I’m still hoping to become the world champion of combined running and drinking,” he laughs. My Ås It is difficult for Fredrik to describe Ås. “It’s a world you have to experience in order to both know and appreciate,” he says. But if he is to choose a word to describe Ås, it must be “passion.” He believes that many of those who study here feel a kind of passion, not only for being a student or for Samfunnet or for associations, but also for the unique community. There is an incredible amount of joy here, and to see the community among the students is quite unique.
Board of Samfunnet Fredrik cannot point to a favourite memory from his time at Ås, but Ås itself is memorable. He was elected Finance Manager for the Board of Samfunnet in 2017, and one of the most important things for him was the experience of working together with the others in the board. He says that it gave him an incredible amount of confidence that he couldn’t get anywhere else. Fredrik had a lot of fun with his KS. The most fun thing was seeing what they Issue 06 Year 74 33
TWO BEERS “On the other hand, we must be observant that if you first feel left out here, that you have no one to go to or have no friends, then it can be incredibly lonely,” he adds. Fredrik says that one of the most important things for him in his job at SiÅs is the job they do for mental health. If we are not aware of it then nothing is done either. During the rebus race of RealTek, Fredrik’s favourite party, he also included this message for the new students. It is incredibly important for him to build solidarity within the studies. Everyone should participate, and everyone should be included, always. “If we are like that with each other in all settings then Ås can’t be bad,” he concludes. He thinks everyone should strive to include everyone. The road ahead In about a year, Ås will have to manage without Fredrik. After the master is finished, he does not know where the road leads, and exactly where in the country is not the most important either. But one thing is certain, and that is if it ends up being Østfold then it should be in Fredrikstad. He is a person who is fond of new upheavals in life, and he looks forward to the transition from student life to adulthood. He has an incredible amount of good memories that he wants to preserve, and despite nearly being finished, Fredrik points out that it is important for him to be able to maintain the good friendships he has formed at Ås. I think I can speak for many of us when I say we can’t wait to see where you end up, Fredrik.

Greetings from friends It was a joyous day, March 20th, 2017. I was elected at GF as the incoming Finance Manager, in addition to Fredrik’s shadow. Of course, I had heard of Fredrik from Fredrikstad, but never met or talked to him. At least, that is what I thought. It didn’t take us many nights and conversations about Østfold until we realized that Fredrik’s first summer job was for my dad. So obviously our first meeting was not at Samfunnet. As a young and ignorant member of Samfunnet, Fredrik granted me all his knowledge ... about alcohol, snus and people. I was the little sister Fredrik never got (he has a little sister), and he was the big brother I never wanted. Dear Fredrik Let the coffee smell be hallowed Let our adult life come Let your will be done in SiÅs as in Samfunnet Give us today our daily coffee, And forgive our guilt in the bodega, So to we forgive your debtors in BEde. Let’s enjoy the end of our study time together in Pomona’s finest collective. Greetings, little Sister
The first time I met Fredrik, we ran against each other at GF to become Chief Financial Officer for Samfunnet. Obviously, he won, and I decided there and then to hate him. It did not last long, for such a happy guy from Østfold you just have be fond of. Fredrik is one of those who always has time for a cup of coffee, he would prefer to eat at the family restaurant Den Gyldne Måke or pizza at Babylon, and always start his days a quarter too late. He loves social events regardless of whether there is a Christmas party at Samfunnet, as a speaker on the 3000m beer run, or just a game of boccia in Eplehagen. Fredrik is one who’s visible and takes a lot of space, but he is also one who always stands up for his friends; whether it’s a trip to the doctor, picking up at the train station, moving or just hanging out and watching TV. Fredrik, you are someone one can always talk to, cry, laugh and just hang out with. Hope it always continues to be that way. Love you from Trønderpia PS. attaching a picture with me in focus, since it is almost always you who is the centre of attention. Greetings Kristine
TWO BEERS My first meeting with Fredrik was at the November 2016 General Assembly, and the first thing I heard him say was “Hi, my name is Fredrik from Fredrikstad”. A small part of me is surprised that I still remember it. But when I think about years of friendship with Fredrik, there is little surprise, especially when it comes to his humour. Fredrik always has a quick tongue, regardless of the situation and topic he always gets to have a little fun. When one has experienced as much as he has, it is well within his place to have a little comment waiting. Few people know, but Fredrik actually started his Bachelor of Science in Biology back in 1986 at UiO and has therefore participated in almost everything already. Fredrik has a unique ability to spread joy, this shines through whether you’re alone with him or in a crowd. When Fredrik combines this ability with a genuine desire to improve student life and a drive to fulfill his wishes, it produces good results. With his wide commitment that has spanned from university politics to society and into welfare politics, he has acted as a link between the major players at Ås. This has given Fredrik a good insight into various issues and an ability to see cases from different sides. He has mastered decathlon in the sport of Ås. Fredrik is a man of many words, 250 is far too small to describe him. He must be experienced. Greetings from Ole

Amnesty and the Duck House Last spring, the Duck House was painted in the colors of the rainbow by Amnesty Ås. This was in connection with pride, even though there were several weeks left until pride. The Duck House was painted over by the Hankatts after just a few hours, and social media took up the debate. Amnesty saw this as an attack against gays and their rights, and they got a large amount of support from others in this claim. Hannkattene tried to defend themselves, but were met with a wall of negativity. Hankattforeningen st. 1902 is a purely social fraternity, and as a Dean do not voice their opinion on political matters. “We are not a political organization, we only want to have fun and gives students a break from their studies.” Adm. Dirk. Vetle Nergård explains. Amnesty Ås has given no comment on the matter. Tradition After the Duck House was blown up in 2006, a treaty was proposed between Hankattene and NMBU regarding “the sovereignty over the Duck House and the surrounding coastal areas”. The treaty states that “other fraternities and organizations travels are allowed, but this shall not lead to any damage on the island’s residence or
the surrounding vegetation”. This has been a tradition and other organization will try to paint the house in their own colors. It is a well known that the Hankatts do not let a lot of time go by until they repaint the house in red and white. Alexander James Fjeld Egland, Chef d’Hazard, says that it was okay for the Hankatts that the house was painted by other organizations, but he wants to highlight that it does not matter to them who paints it. “It has become a habit for us to repaint it when we see that someone has painted it. It would also be wrong for us to let certain organizations have their colors up longer than others.” Both Alexander and Vetle encourage everybody to neither cause damage nor move the Duck House. Don’t be dull Lately, a lot has been damaged and stolen from the Hankatts. “It ruins things for us when people steal or move the house. We spend quite a lot of resources to keep it in place.” Vetle says. Hankattene are funded by NMBU to ensure that the Duck House and island look presentable. This includes no littering, trees are not to be painted
and the vegetation shall be preserved. “We often arrive and find that there is trash lying around that we need to clean up. It is sad, when we are studying at an environmentally

Encourages everybody to help keep the area nice and clean, and to take better care of it. Welcome to the Hankattloftet Due to thievery and damage in Hannkattloftet, it has come to a point where the Hankatts sometimes have to lock their doors. “We don’t want to, we always want people to be able to walk in to talk or to play a game of cards.” Alexander says. They explain that Hankattene have become a popular talking point during the Buddy Week, among others. Both Alexander and Vetle were informed about Hankattene and how horrible they are. “Confront me if you have any questions so we can talk about it rather than spreading a bunch of rumors and prejudices. Loftet is open to everyone no matter appearance or who you are.” Alexander says. They also want to highlight that if anyone wishes to paint the Duck House for an important event, they can just send an email and ask Adm. Dir.

THE STUDENT VOTE The survey was only shared on Tuntreet’s own Facebook page, and we received 274 responses, slightly fewer than is usually used for polls of this kind, but still a representative sample.
This year, there have been county and municipal elections in Norway, and on this occasion, Tuntreet published a survey to see how the election would have gone if it were up to the NMBU students alone. All in all, it was the Green Party (MDG) that got the most support with 23.1% of the vote. The Socialist Left Party (SV) was just behind with 19.6% and the Centre Party (SP) with 15.3%.

Green festival, a local festival about local sustainability Ørjan Olsen Furnes Journalist Simen Walbækken Tangen Photographer Vegard Sjaastad Hansen Translator
For the 6th year in a row Green Festival was arranged in Ås by MDG (Miljøpartiet De Grønne). Both local production and local politics were in focus when Borggården once again was preparing for a folk festival. Opening with a demonstration The festival got a huge kick-off for everyone who wanted to participate at Klimabrølet outside Stortinget, before going back to Ås to catch PechaKucha at Vitenparken. Here there were short, visual and concise presentations from among others Extinction Rebellion, Changemaker, and MDGprofiles and more. This became a nice intro to what we can do on a personal level to save the climate, work against climate passivity, compact city-development and more. Folk festival downtown Saturday was the big market-day where local producers of clothes, food and other things put up stands between Kulturhuset and Rådhuset in Ås, while there were political stands, and later on a debate in the park where every major party was represented. There were also offers like dance workshop for kids arranged by DÅs, and Lego citybuilding at Kulturhuset, which went down well with visitors of all ages. From yoga to circular economy Yoga and pilates was a fresh start to the day for everyone who took advantage of the popular morning event held by 1. Plan on Sunday. After that the whole festival got a proper kick-off with the trading- and fixing-party at Kulturhuset. Here more than 100 articles of clothing got a new home, while more than 50 were fixed. In
addition, 13 mobile phone screens were replaced. Rethinking Economics, Redu and Trefokus added to the participants insight in circular economics during couch talks that were held simultaneously. Inspire for a greener lifestyle “The basic idea behind Green Festival in Ås is to create a social meeting ground for everyone in Ås. The festival has as a goal to inspire a greener lifestyle and show what sustainable options and alternatives there are in the local community”. This is how festival coordinator and student at NMBU, Ane Lillebuen Berge, presents the motivation behind arranging something like this in Ås. She has planned the festival since 1st of April and has been working hard the whole time. “I am very grateful for the trust, and it has been a very educational process”, Ane says before adding that it wouldn’t have been possible without all the great volunteers who contributed during the festival weekend itself. Here she aims a special thanks to Ås Green Students.
The interest from participants both at PechaKucha and on the market day was huge, nearly 50 local traders participated on the market, and the feedback from everyone who participated was fantastically good. Ane ends by saying that “all in all, the festival exceeded all expectations”. The festival was a social and educational breath of fresh air in these trying times of local elections, so now all you have to do is look forward to when the success is repeated in 2020.

“Fadder” for the whole University Guro Størdal Journalist Sigrid Trier Kjær Photographer
“Fadderuka” is over, leaving many new students exhausted, but hopefully happy and some friendships richer. One of the most important people behind it all is Lish Earnest, the “faddergeneral”.
Long Preparations Although “fadderuka” is just a week, the planning started months ago. In February, Lish and “faddersjefene” had their first meeting, sketching out a plan. “I looked back at it recently, and we hadn’t kept to that schedule at all”, Lish laughs. But she says she never had to worry. “I had amazing “faddersjefer”, who did what they should, and made sure I did my job as well”, she says. They heard rumours about a binder with information about how to be a “faddergeneral”, but it hadn’t been seen in a few years, so a lot had to be figured out along the way. “We had to do a lot of reinventing the wheel and find out things like how to order 400 t-shirts, how to book rooms and so on”, she says. The work on a new binder has started, and Lish assumes she and her assistant will be working on it until the election of the new “faddergeneral” in November.
42 Issue 06 Year 74
Including International Students As a former International Officer, Lish had seen how many international students fell off during “fadderuka”. “I could see a lot of the new international students really struggling to get put into faculties or getting contacted, and that was really frustrating for me, because they were all really excited to join.” This year they tried a new system where the international students had to sign up themselves, and she felt it worked out well. “I think most signed up. I still got like five or six e-mails every day the first couple of days from people not having a “fadder” and so on, but that was both international and Norwegian students”. Shifting the Focus and Developing “Fadderuka” Alcohol is a big part of “fadderuka”, but Lish wanted to try to shift the focus. “People are still gonna be drinking, but the focus on an event should be something else, not the drinking”, she says. The theme
parties should have focus on the theme and on dressing up, and she wanted events like “rebusløpet” to not include activities that made people drink to get points. Instead “faddersjefene” and “fadderne” had to come up with new ideas, and she hopes it had some impact. “You can make all these rules, but there won’t be a real change until the cultural understanding or the mindset of what “fadderuka” is changes.” Lish also wanted a bigger focus on the role as a “fadder” throughout the year. For the first time a “fadderseminar” was held in the spring. “Instead of it being something that the “fadderne” aren’t really thinking about so much until they come back from summer break, we wanted it to be like more focus on more ideological things before summer, like what kind of roles are you gonna play, and what kind of leaders are you gonna be for your group. So, it’s kinda sitting in their head during summer break”, she tells about the idea behind the seminar. She also

hopes and expects “faddere” to continue their good work throughout the autumn. During the mental health week in October associations like SiT and Arbeidsutvalget are hosting events like a movie night and workshops, among other things, and Lish sees this as a good opportunity for “faddere” to have a check in with “fadderbarna” and see how they are doing. Being “Faddergeneral” Lish says that overall it was a really great experience. “Of course, there were moments during “fadderuka” I regretted being “faddergeneral”. Like during the seminar in the registration weekend where almost everything that could go wrong did go wrong, but other than that I didn’t really have any bad, unexpected experiences during “fadderuka””. She loved to be a part of planning a week of just social activities and parties to welcome new students. She says that to have a good first week here in Ås made all the difference for her in the beginning, and she wanted the same for others.
say hello when they meet, without her knowing who they are. She only finds it funny and enjoy that “fadderuka” have had an impact on so many. Her best experience during the week was to see how “fadderne” have volunteered, even coming back to Ås early from their summer break. “It’s something I already love about Ås. People are giving so much time and energy into volunteering, without getting money or study credits for it. They want to contribute, just because they care”. An Important Shout Out! Being “faddergeneral” alone can be though, and Lish officially appointed a secretary, Lise Benette N. Hovd. “It has been common and accepted for “faddergeneralen” to have someone helping out, but this year it was more official. I honestly don’t know how I would have done this without her. She deserves a big shout out!” Lish finishes.

Børge on being a journalist

Have you ever wondered what it is like to make a student newspaper? Here you’ll get some insight in what it’s like to be a journalist in Tuntreet. I walk into the living room. There sits Børge in the sofa, ready as an egg, waiting to get cracking. Normally he would be sitting on this side of the notepad. Now the tables have turned, because today he is the interviewee. I on the other hand have never interviewed anyone before. So with this interview expert from Tuntreet in front of me, I have to admit to feeling a bit anxious. He starts by telling me about what he does as a journalist. “It is to go to Samfunnet and drink beer.” It is also going to intimate concerts and interviews with artists. Børge adds that it pays off to be patient and concentrated. It is not easy to write down everything that is being said. I can confirm this as a rookie in the area. Further on Børge answers on how he recommends working when writing an article. “First and foremost: do proper research! Write down a lot of questions in advance, then it’s easier to choose what fits the situation. When you carrying out the interview it is important to notice details,

since people do strange things. When I write, I’m cynical as fuck.” Afterwards he choses what fits in, processes the text and gets feedback from correction committee.
I’m cynical as fuck When it comes to the readers he tries to cater to their preferences. His sense of humour is not always as well received by the readers. Before the text is sent, he usually gets others in his flat to read it, just to be sure. He is asked why he writes for Tuntreet. “First, I’m going to come with a dishonest answer, then an honest one. One – it is very fun. Two – cheaper beer and admittance. A small note: it is actually really fun to write.”
44 Issue 06 Year 74
“The goal is always to write interesting. Tuntreet is something you read as a break from studying. Then it is good to have a combination of seriousness and humour. This is a newspaper of the students, Børge says and reminds everyone that feedback on the content in the newspaper is always wellreceived. Lastly, I ask what the most challenging thing being a journalist in Tuntreet is. “Anne Tove (red.anm. journalist coordinator) is really mean” he says laughing. When you walk into Samfunnet in a different role the usual patterns are broken, and you have to go out of your comfort zone. In addition, there is a lot you want to say and write about which is wildly out of place. “All in all, it is a fun and unique way to meet new people”, he finishes.

Coffee, a gift sent to us from god. Welcome to a paradise of tastes, brewing methods and knowledge about our black gold. Brewing method: FILTERED COFFEE There are many methods for brewing a tasty cup of coffee. One of them is filter brewed coffee. Here comes a recipe and some tips and tricks for a good brew that suits your breakfast or coffee guests. It works both if you have a percolator or if you do the whole thing manually with a pouring pot, like the Hario V60. Anyway, here comes a good procedure where you can control the result.
1. When you’re starting, begin with rinsing the paper filter. This is to avoid any paper taste in the brew. 2. Measure up the coffee. Use 60-65 grams of coffee per litre of water. If you’re buying pre-ground from the store, the “filtermalt” bag is the one you’re after. If you’re grinding it yourself, the coffee particles should be medium size, i.e. like grains of sand. 3. Turn on the percolator or pour with 90-96°C water. 2.5-3 minutes is a nice pouring time limit if you’re brewing by hand. 4. Pour over in a cup or mug, and the filter coffee is ready to be savoured.
What is coffee? For many, the black gold is the very foundation of their lives. The day starts with a splendid cup of fresh, hot coffee. Is there anything better than that? If you haven’t yet tasted coffee, be ashamed and get to work. You have a lot to catch up on. A personal piece of advice; “Coffee addiction can never come early enough” – Anne Tove (journalist editor and self-declared coffee enthusiast -Ed.). Norway is a world leader in coffee consumption, so we should know what it is and the process behind it. Ready for a crash course? Ethiopia is coffee’s homeland. Brazil is the top producer of coffee, and where Norway imports the most coffee from.1 The coffee bean

comes from the coffee plant (coffea arabica and coffea robusta). The process from berry to brew is long and has many steps. Mature berries are plucked, rinsed and dried at plantations. The dried beans are passed on to a distillery, and then the coffee gets packed, either ground or as whole beans. Then everything is ready for the coffee to be brewed by you and me, here there is a world of possibilities. There’s filtered coffee, espresso drinks, powdered coffee, hand brew, cafetière, karsk and much more! The only limit is your imagination! Coffee gathers people. Coffee sets tastes. “A frappe without espresso, please!”. Coffee is a drug. Coffee is your best friend. Coffee, you said? Yes, the answer is coffee. Issue 06 Year 74 45

1. Vi bidrar til at det finnes foreninger der alle er velkomne! Uavhengig av kjønn, legning, utseende, funksjonshemming osv. 2. Vi er et alternativ til foreningene med trange stereotypiske kjønnsroller.
Glem gamle fulgte filosofier som «Nei, as, det æ’kke meg, as». Gi deg selv en ny utfordring i studenttilværelsen. Sleng litt gjødsel på livstreet ditt. Si «Ja, og…» til livet! -Erik Tylleskär, Leder i Ås impro Issue 06 Year 74 49

The Amazon is burning in front of our eyes tt Brazil has a president who prioritizes profit above all else. This is at the expense of those who cannot defend themselves; animals, plants and indigenous peoples who call the rainforest their home. Deforested areas are used for meat production. Just on its own, Norway imports half a million ton of soy every year from the Amazon Rainforest. The Norwegian fish industry uses soy as feed. Chickens and pigs are fed using soy. Even ruminants are given feed that uses soy as a supplement. Grass doesn’t produce as much meat, you see.

In Norway, we only import sustainable soy. This is what we call soy that is grown in areas that have not recently been deforested. With high purchasing power, we demand those areas where the forest will not naturally grow back. For this, we pat ourselves on the back while less affluent countries finance further deforestation of the world’s richest ecosystem. As long as there is a buyer, Brazil keeps making money. Instead of cutting trade with Brazil, we pass this responsibility on to others, and applaud ourselves for our environmental friendliness.. This is not a vegan’s desire to eliminate meat consumption. Preaching Pries Mastering student life I remember my first year as a student. I lived in a room in Oslo. A place by Valkyrie plaza. A room on the third floor. I did not feel good. Not unwelcome, but also not entirely wanted by my hosts. Living in Oslo was exciting, But I did not like the noise and traffic. I studied at the Faculty of Theology, also known as the angel factory. Did not exactly thrive there. Too many people. Too many who had opinions on most things all the time. Who was I, a still immature man who had started trying out life and theology? What was my place? Which path should I take? What did I wish for? Would I manage even if I did not know whether I wanted to? And then this thing with the ladies. How should I proceed? Who did I want and who could I get? What measures were needed? We were a small group of friends who had known each other before our studies at the university. We stuck together early on and supported each other. For me this was what saved me. Having some good friends in the same situation as I was a safe haven. It could not possibly be easier being a student today than in the past. How to master the student life. “the sweet student life” as it is called by some. Yes, it is in many ways nice to be “the smith of one’s own happiness”. To govern oneself. Go in the direction you wish. Sleep when you want. Rise when you want. Be with those one meets on the way. Familiarise oneself with new fields. Orient oneself in foreign disciplines. Attain new knowledge. Master new fields. Learn what one thought was unattainable. Grow up and apply for jobs. Get an exciting position at a new employer. But at the same time, it is demanding. So many new scenes to master. So many exams to pass. So many decisions to be made. Maybe we should talk more about the fact that the student life has clear and demanding challenges. It is not just easy. It can be very tiring! It costs and has its price. No one can do everything. Neither can we have everything we wish for. It is not always as the Americans say: Where there is a will, there is a way. Life has its limits. I have my background which gives my life its own direction. I do not always understand what is best for me. Not always do I want what is best for me. Sting has a song with a line which hits me every time I hear it. It is strange, because it should be a given. But I must, time after time, acknowledge this. I think it is relevant to more people than just me. It is a given thing which is often difficult to grasp: Be yourself no matter what they say. So what does this mean? It means that student life is a struggle to find one’s own place, which is suited for oneself. In meeting society. In meeting another human. In meeting professional life. This goes well for
some. Most of us must struggle a bit to put things in place. And if they fall in place, then there might come new challenges we must struggle through. IToday, the trend is that many pursue “the perfect me”. A word for this is narcissism. We live in a culture where maybe narcissism is the most common illness. We are all marked by it. We take selfies unceasingly. We want to shine and be successful. We are supposed to be positive and optimistic. Self-development and self-care. Mercy on me if I do not live up to my potential! We shall reach our goals, both on the outside and inside. Has it become a taboo to be completely ordinary? his was the headline in a magazine. A themed issue on young people’s psychological health. “in the pursuit of realizing oneself, being completely ordinary has become a taboo”. This is from a lecturer at the University College of SouthEastern Norway. He thinks that young people can be damaged by the demands for self-realization and perfectionism. The all too high demands placed on themselves mean that many feel like failures. This has consequences. Generation perfect is struggling more than before. They struggle with inner stress, since the demands set by themselves are so high. It is actually all right to be ordinary. There are more of us, of us ordinary people! What does it mean to be ordinary? Psychiatrist and author Marianne Mjåland says it like this: To me, happiness is not a goal in itself. Absence of pain and suffering makes life stagnant and frictionless – empty! The short flashes of happiness that come along should be enjoyed in their fleeting unpredictability. But chasing them, almost clinging to them, that is futile. Only by embracing life’s existential pain, can we find meaning. Only by protecting the imperfect, can we develop as human beings (empathy). In short: It’s OK not to be OK. DIt is not sick or abnormal to have bad days. It is inhuman to feel on top at all times. Only those who at times struggle live. It is called being a human. INobody is perfect. No one can handle everything on their own. We need each other facing life and all its challenges. I am not strongest alone. The old testament has this formulation: Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. Let all your things be done with charity. Corinthians 1 16.13-14.

This is technically destruction of property and you are pissed off because the owner of that property cleaned up. Focus on more important things. E.g. antiracist marking.
