HIGHLIGHT: OPENING OF THE VETERINARIAN BUILDING

LEADER

LEADER Back to the ordinary - just about And here we are, back at Ås! In addition to newly begun subjects - in many cases even physically – the Ås spirit is returning after lying in dormancy for half a year. I naturally wish new students welcome, but I also wish returning students welcome - those with limited experience as to what the Åsbubble has to offer. After a quiet Spring term, students are once again delving deep into their books. The first Tuntreet edition of the year is usually a quiet affair. The edition you are holding in your hand is a bad example. This time, the “editor had to be an editor” and cut down on things. In spite of this making the job more difficult, it is good to know that things are starting to happen again, both at Samfunnet and in society. We find ourselves in a period full of changes. NMBU has a new rector, Café Klubben has changed its name back to Klubben, Halvor Holtestaul has retired from DVU, Samfunnet has reopened and the veterinarians have made it to Ås. We also have the election on the 13th of September, so I advise everyone who can to vote. Read more on this inside this edition.

There are many reasons to celebrate, but I urge you all to be a little cautious in the coming days and weeks. I am myself writing this editorial from the sickbed, thankfully with a negative Covid test. And speaking of! Samfunnet and NMBU have entered an agreement on rapid tests. Thanks to this, Samfunnet is able to boost capacity from 200 to 500 guests. Great! Just don’t forget that we are far from herd immunity. The virus does not care whether you’ve got a lecture or not, no matter what rules are removed in these circumstances. Show precaution. There is a feeling, which I think, I am not the only one experiencing. The fourth stage of the reopening is like a carrot on a fishing pole which you are never able to reach. But now, it isn’t far off. Much is beginning to feel normal, but in all earnestness, what is normal anymore? We have lived with so many high- and low hanging restrictions that I am honestly beginning to lose overview. “What will you do when covid is over?” rings like an echo in my head. I have no idea. Maybe I’ll be doing exactly what I am doing now, only with a 1000% increase of hugs.

The air felt so moist that I was afraid my notebook would dissolve completely. Coloured shirts were visible all over campus, guiding flocks of new students. While the latter were engaged in consuming moisture of a more alcoholic sort, we at Tuntreet walked around to see if we could find someone who could reveal their expectations and feelings about their experience so far. We asked them four questions: 1. What are you studying? 2. What do you look forward to? 3. What do you think about society life? 4. Are the infection control measures satisfactory?

TUNTREET

See you at the café! Anne Tove Græsdal Tornes Våge Journalist and photographer

The 16th of August was a big day for us all. The August block has begun, new students have started, and so has our dear Café Klubben. We’ve had a chat with Jardar Lindaas Bringedal, committee chief for Café Klubben, to hear what the opening was like!

What is Café Klubben anyway? «Café Klubben is located on the first floor of Samfunnet between the pergola, the choir room and Rosehagen. You can get yourself a cup of coffee, food and other beverages after 16:00 on working days.» What is new? «The current management is new and now run by Studentsamfunnet. In previous years, Studentsamskipnaden (SiÅs) used to run the café. Students worked part-time back then, and prices were set by SiÅs. To faciliate transition of management, a new comittee has been launched under Studentsamfunnet. The aforementioned now sets prices and the selection.» “New” name «Cafe Klubben and Klubben were names for our dear café. When I read about Klubben in “Ås-studenter i 150 år”, I noticed: ‘Our club (Café Klubben) has a lot in common with the old one, but it is less popular and less attached to the students. (…) Lately, Café Klubben has struggled with attracting customers.’ In other words, Klubben was a popular and central place, Cafe Klubben never really hit the spot. But these are new times, and the venue has returned to the hands of Studentsamfunnet. I think this might be the perfect time in history to rebrand it to Klubben. To give the students back something they held dear, but which has eroded with time.» How was the opening? «The opening was great, but we actually opened on November the 3rd 2020, but then, there were only a few days before the

Benjamin Alexander Faulkner Translator

shutdown. Now, the new Café Klubben has set a new record, over 14 days! The new opening in August has gone very good, there have been people coming in every day, so we are an enthusiastic group who runs Café Klubben seven days a week.» What is the plan for development of Café Klubben? «The plan is to improve and make sure Café Klubben stays relevant and to expand our selection. We want to run the place as a little break between working hours, a place where you can relax with a good drink, surrounded by good people.» What is different from before? «A point of difference is that Studentsamfunnet i Ås is the new owner, and not Studentsamskipnaden. That means that we run the café a hundred percent voluntarily. Since we have taken over, we have tried to make Café Klubben a more quaint establishment. Therefore, we have bought in new chairs and tables, and removed many of the old chairs and sofas. We have also bought in a few new bookcases, established a book swapping shelf and bought in new tableware. There will always be two on the job, opposite of the one-man service which it used to be. We are open for input from the public if any of you have any good ideas!» Why should students come to Café Klubben? There is an infinity of reasons to come to Café Klubben! Consequently, I will only mention a few of them here, so if you come to Café Klubben you will witness the rest of them! We have excellent and inexpensive food and drink, are only a stone’s throw away from campus, have opening hours comparable to other cafés in Ås, and have a great crew behind the counter!

Aim for the stars if you want to win

Despite the fact that students and employees have been using the new veterinary building at NMBU since January, the official opening found place on September 1st. Nevertheless, it was executed with pomp, splendor and a joy that would indicate people are getting comfortable.

An impressed queen The details in the buildings can impress anyone. There are hallways built for horses wearing winter shoes. There are green roofs dimensioned for the flood rain that will worsen in the future – and which at the same time provides work for thousands of bees. Besides, the new Bikuben with reading halls and cafeteria is placed between the new buildings and the Clock Building. Strategic, to ensure that the former School of Veterinary Sciences (NVH) and the old University of Environment and Biosciences (UMB) are really tied together into NMBU. “This is completely amazing” was among the first words of the Queen when seeing the new buildings.

Simen Walbækken Tangen Photographer Sofie Palmstrøm Translator

High-tech and tailor-made H.M Queen Sonja, three Ministers of State, the County Governor, the Chief Constable of the police, students, employees, preschoolers and many others were present when Statsbygg handed over the symbolic key to the new buildings of NMBU and the Institute of Veterinary Medicine. According to Statsbygg themselves and the chief executive of the Institute of Veterinary Medicine, Jorun Jarp, the new buildings are among the best in Europe for their use. “High tech and tailor made” were the words used by director of Statsbygg Harald Nikolaisen to describe them. There are 63 000 square meters of laboratories, operation rooms, aquariums, and other special areas.

Artists and scientists on the same team Both inside and outside there is everything from small art pieces to large monuments – art that actualizes the exact problems that the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Institute of Veterinary Medicine are going to solve. Maybe the next pandemic will be stopped in the new veterinary buildings here in Ås. For the future scientists, motivation can be found in the mural Troubled mother

with unexpected dreams, which shows our own earth and all the unexpected that can befall it and its inhabitants. CEO of KORO – Public Art Norway, Svein Bjørkås, emphasized that the similarity between the focus of art and the societal mission of employees and students at the Veterinary buildings shows how relevant these problems are.

There were a lot of spectators that day.

TUNTREET “They say that in order to win you need to aim for the stars, and in this case they really did” said leader of the Norwegian Student Union, Tuva Lund. For nearly eight billion NOK we have gotten the best facilities one could ever wish for. An area of focus is going to be threats against the health of land animals, fish and people. The past two years have shown that contagious diseases, transferrable between animals and humans, can have a hard and wide impact. How we take care of the oceans and the fish means everything for the future of Norway’s and the world’s seafood.

A hard battle Kamara sang “You say you wanna go back, to the way it was. But it’s too late…” in front of the new buildings. For a long time that was what one could hear about the decision to move from the middle of Oslo to Ås. It has been called a political horse trade and “make-believe district politics”. However, with the results before our eyes, there is plenty of reason to be content. Was it only the festivities creating the good vibes on the opening day? No, it seems like the tables have turned – and stayed put. A necessary battle Some healthy scepticism about novelty can be a good thing. That is the only way to appreciate all the good that has been accomplished through 130 years at Adamstuen. If you flutter forward indifferently like a spineless leaf, without looking back and standing your ground, a lot will be lost. This is exactly why it seems as though the new School of Veterinary Medicine and the Institute of Veterinary Medicine have some bright decades ahead. The balance between good traditions and top modern facilities looks promising.

Kamara performed during the program.

Tuva Todnem Lund, former leader of the Student Parliament and AU at NMBU, current leader of the Norwegian Union of Students.

Problems like these were also highlighted by the politicians who were present during the opening. They talked about the importance of “one health; the importance of thinking globally, because a health threat anywhere in the world is a health threat everywhere. The Minister of Agriculture and Food, Olaug Bollestad, was excited to see the results of the project: “We need you to find answers to the most important questions of our time!” It actually seemed as though most people shared this joy over the new buildings on the opening day. This undivided positivity has not always been the case in this matter.

ART ON CAMPUS Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life, Pablo Picasso tells us. I think he is right. But what on earth does the crucified bronze cow outside of the Veterinarian institute mean? Or the picnic bag in front of Urbygningen? The grotesque iron valkyrie outside of Sørhellinga? Our brain struggles to find a box in which to put these strange works of art. They are detached from our regular experience of material surroundings; our points of reference which have guided us through the world since birth. Art unfastens us from our uninspiring academic routines and stereotypical lives, and catapults us into a dimension where our brain is at its greatest capacity: the dimension where we think, wonder and reflect – and do not really know. What is better for the student mind than art, which forces us to think in new ways? Benjamin Alexander Faulkner Journalist

Now, with these words put to bed, let us begin our journey through KOROs new art guide for our campus: “The art of the art walk”, as it so appropriately called. It is filled to the rafters with curious descriptions and intellectual avalanches. Not all of you have the time, or even the desire, to walk the whole tour, so Tuntreet will do it for you – with a scarf and a beret. Here is a little collection of artistic highlights you will find on campus!

Margreta Brunborg Photographer

Nr 4. Two-part. Maren Dagny Juell. Tutorial#14 The Party, video, 2021 and The Party, 3D-printed plastic bottles on steel rods, 2021. Just as we left Nordskogen, we had a visual on our target. A few meters into the thicket, we saw a congregation of bottles, suspended in mid-air. They were quite colourful, and quite peculiar. As students of this sinful society, we are used to seeing discarded bottles on the ground, but here they are almost transcendent. “Here we are,” they said. “We are not like the others.” And they are right. These are biodegradable, and may disappear completely within a decade.

Nr. 2 Steinar Haga Kristensen. The Study, 2020. This thing suddenly appeared by Ås gård in 2020. It is enigmatic and aloof, high up on the heath. The human head appears to be engaged in an intimate confrontation with an undeterminable mass. Perhaps an artful depiction of our encounters with abstract ideas and concepts? Approach the sculpture, and gaze upon this interplay between man and thought.

On the edge of Arboretveien, we eyed the second part of this art installation. An enormous screen, displaying the rolling credits of a film as we approached. There was only one thing to do. To see it. And that we did. Though a few vague existensialist notions and semierotic descriptions of food containers burnt a hole in our skulls, we are none the wiser. The film is set in a kind of futuristic society where a few young women have ordered a sort of transcendental “tupperware” experience. It was a good old critique of our human fascination for plastic food containers. If you have ten minutes to spare, then go watch the film! Edition 06 Volume 76

TUNTREET Nr 11. Fritz Røed. Veterinarian on carneval in Venezia, ca 1990. This sculpture excites many of us. A suit of armour, the head of a cow, a spiked jock strap, stilts, violent dragon spikes and a sweet disarming flower on the knee. Behold this beast of an artwork, created by Fritz Røed and cast in bronze. It is hard to decipher its purpose here, but one can always wonder. I really can not say any more. On a more serious note, Fritz Røed has also produced the art work “Swords in mountain” by Hafrsfjord.

Nr 26. Aurora Sander. The Secession, 2020. Want to go on a picnic? The next work of art is a carpet, supported by springs to imitate the experience of sitting on a flying carpet. This artwork may be a reference to the legendary cooling bag in front of Tårnbygningen. From here, you can contemplate the kitchen garden, but watch out for the ants!

Nr 27. Daniel Dewar og Grégory Gicquel. The Waste, 2020. We have arrived at a tasteful chunk of portuguese marble, also known as the bathroom marble of the 80s, also known as the marble of your grandmothers. But there is something amiss. On top of the marble, a human being is nearly engulfed by the rock, ending up at a sink. The art piece is titled “The Waste”, and questions our human relationship with rubbish. On a different note, it is a great birdbath. Nr 28. Siri Bjerke, Des Fleurs V, 2021. Behold this miniature obelisk in turkish basalt with a pleasant lump on top. Someone has taken great care in carving in a sort of grid system on top, as well. Embrace the rock, and feel the transition from polished stone to hard, rough rock at the bottom. Tuntreet appreciates Multiconsult for their contribution to NMBU. 10

Edition 06 Volume 76

TUNTREET

Nr 29. Kathrin Schlegel. Feeding from the Tree of Knowledge, 2020. As the art work is described, the person behind it has extracted a piece of lichen from Tuntreet by Sirkus and Tivoli, placed it under the microscope and used it as inspiration to this astonishing art work. It is a great explosion of organic life, cast in bronze, and a monumental celebration of the academic accumulation of knowledge. The sculpture is just fascinating, so spend some time looking at its shifting shadows and forceful movement.

Nr 56. Boge Berg. “Frøya”, a goddess of fertility, 1982. Gaze upon the Beauty of Sørhellinga and despair: an unparallelled BDSM fantasy stands before you. Here, Freya, the norse god of war and sex, has taken a repulsive guise, and the intimate intercourse between her and the two people underneath expresses a different experience of the erotic; one of domination and awe. Random elements have seemingly latched onto her body. After all, she is not a defined being, but the end product of what we want her to be. We did not linger by this sculpture for too long, as it somehow gets more and more discomforting as time passes.

Nr 64. Carl Nesjar, Helårsfontene, 1971. Go to Aud.Max and take your hat off for this great monument, created by Carl Nesjar. Its orbiting musical staves flutter about like our culture here at Ås does, and the triumphal globe on top celebrates Samfunnet’s international cultural supremacy. Drunk or sober, on your way to a concert or kicked out with a footprint on your arse; the sculpture bids you welcome with inebriated optimism.

This art walk is a splendid Sunday activity! Sculptures and art works situated outside can change dramatically, according to weather and season, so take a few more walks throughout the term. We are grateful to KORO for producing this excellent art tour. Remember: a description of an art work is just another personal perspective. How you experience art is radically subjective and unique, so try not to debase your first encounter with an art piece by reading the fixed description first. Enjoy! Edition 06 Volume 76

New year, new rector: Tuntreet has a chat with Curt Rice Tord Kristian F. Andersen Journalist

Aleksander Mæland Munkejord Translator

Once again NMBU has a new rector, this time in the shape of an American with a dialect from northern Norway. So, who exactly is this guy? What are his duties? What challenges does he face? And how does he feel about being as fresh here as our freshmen?

one year, but destiny wanted it another way. After a while, he was leading UiT’s Centre of Excellence (SFF), in which he found a lot of joy. After this position, he was elected pro-rector in 2008. A few years later, he became rector of the Oslo and Akershus University College, currently OsloMet.

Life before Ås I begin by asking about Curt’s background, and after a short pause for thought, he reveals that right about now he has been living in Norway for 30 years. The fact that he first arrived here in the 90’s is rarely evident from his dialect. After finishing his doctorate in linguistics in his home country, he was hired by the University in Tromsø (UiT). The intention was to stay there for

The hiring process The 5th of May, the University Board announced their decision of hiring Curt Rice as the new rector of NMBU. It had been no simple process. There were lots of interviews, personality tests, IQ-tests and astrology tests, Curt explains, smiling. He remains shy when asked about who contacted him first. Accepting this job offer meant that he had to cancel his

12

Simen Walbækken Tangen Photographer

tenure at OsloMet, the university he helped rebranding. Curt commenced his new tasks the 1st of August, but which ones do he consider the most important? Cultural development I am told that Curt has three main tasks to fulfill. 1.NMBU is to be the university of sustainability. It should be impossible to think about NMBU without thinking about sustainability. 2. Academic integration. Veterinarians and the rest of Campus will be integrated together, not one into another. This will also provide better interdisciplinarity within research. 3. A visible institution. Convey all the

TUNTREET fantastic stuff that happens at NMBU. For the last point in particular, Curt expresses a certain frustration. He mentions the lack of media coverage of NMBU, not to mention how often the name is misspelled. Examples are “The Norwegian Environmental and Biotechnical University”, “The Norwegian Natural and Environmental-Scientific University”. “I have received a lot of flak for the name OsloMet, but at least people get it right”. Why NMBU often scores low on the international rankings, Curt thinks is due to a lack of awareness about the institution. When we ask Curt to bring the three points under a single heading, he likes to call it Cultural Development. Curt, the foreign fighter Our new rector has a great task ahead of himself, but he does not really have the typical background that one would expect from one that is going to lead an institution described as environmentand bio-scientific. “I will never master everything”. Both regarding our fields of study and the history of our institution, he is conscious and clear on the fact that those are other people’s expertise. “I will do my best, to learn as much as possible about NMBU”. Above all he would like to emphasize that he is really motivated to accomplish this. When I ask him how he is supposed to support research and students within a completely different field of study, he responds the following: “NMBU, in English, is called ‘The Norwegian University of Life Sciences’, and I would argue that linguistics is a life science. Linguistics is about psychology, and when it comes down to it, psychology is really just biology. From my point of view, and how I see my field of work, I like to think that linguistics is among the few life sciences that are placed in humanistic institutes.” Anyways, Curt emphasizes that the methods of research are what matters; supporting the researchers, and making sure that we are conducting morally sound research, with trustworthy results. This is clearly something that spans across the borders of the different fields of study.

greeted with a heartwarming generosity”. His only complaint is having less time for working out. You see, Curt loves working out. “I like weightlifting, walking, jogging, cycling…”. Curt lives close to OsloMet, so spending two hours every day commuting has impacted his amount of training, negatively. However, he has no immediate plans of moving to Ås. “I keep an eye on the housing market». There is no hiding that this is not your typical nine-to-five job situation. The future During his very short amount of time in Ås, a lot has happened. How has it been, finally having the veterinarians together with the rest of the campus? “Creating an opportunity space of 63000 sqm… It can only be great. Anything else is inconceivable”. Curious about the fact that Curt has moved around a bit earlier, I finally ask him the question of whether he considers himself hired to complete the aforementioned tasks, or if he is planning to stay here. He makes it crystal clear: ”I intend to fulfill my days here at NMBU, I will spend a lot of years on those tasks.” Tuntreet waits in excitement. Best of luck!

FIVE QUICK ONES 1. What’s on your nightstand? – At the moment, a popular-scientifical book called “Noise”. 2. Are you going pilsing at the Bodega this year? – Probably not, I don’t drink beer. A fine gin and tonic is not out of the question. 3. Pilsner or bayer? – N O 4. What’s NMBU’s next name? – Perhaps “The World’s University of Life Sciences”? 5. How do you feel about selfies and Instagram? – Selfies are fine, but I don’t like Instagram. I’m rather a grumbler on Twitter.

Curt in Ås Being new in Ås has been a great upheaval. It is a change in location, field of work, and culture. Nevertheless, Curt is pleased to meet the people in Ås. “I have been Edition 06 Volume 76

Tuntreet’s tips for new students There are limits to how much information a new student can gather during the Buddy Week and through tours. We have rounded up some good advice for both new and old students.

Academic

Economic

• Join events through your study association: you will get to know new students both younger and older than you, who you can ask about which courses to take, and which would help you build a good network for your working career.

• Get a bike, everything in Ås can be reached in 15 minutes by bike. It is mostly flat, so it is not too tiring. If you need to fix your bike there are two repair stations. One in central Ås and one on campus by the post house.

• If possible, avoid 08:00 lectures on Thursdays.

• Check the store discount sections, you can find many bargains there. Go to the stores where students don’t usually go (on the other side of the railroad)

• Old exams can tell you a lot about your future exam, you can find them on Canvas -> All Courses -> Browse More Courses -> Arkiv eksamensoppgaver NMBU and search for the subject code or previous codes for the course. • Subject codes are changed far too frequently: ask older students, lecturers or a student counselor what the subject is called now, and what it was called before. • Check if you actually need books for your course, and ask older students in Facebook groups like “NMBU pensumbøker kjøp/salg/bytte” when buying and selling by NMBU • If you need a new photo for your CV, you can get one for free during Career Day (Bonus: you’ll never need to buy another pen again) • Double check that you are signed up for both tuition and an exam when you sign up to subjects through Studentweb.

• See if your study association has a coffee maker. Their coffee is often free. There are also teeny tiny kitchens spread across campus with both kettles and microwave ovens. • Go to the secondhand store, you can find everything a student needs. Cutlery, plates, wine glasses, books, clothes, furniture and much more if you are lucky. If you are going to a theme party, you will definitely find something for a costume there. It Is said that the store would not survive without Samfunnets theme parties. • There is a “free store” in the basement at Børsen, where you can leave things you don’t need and take things that the other students have left for you! • There are free chlamydia tests at the post on campus. And, for god’s sake, grab some free condoms while you are there. There is a correlation here. • Gather the collective’s “pant”, “pant” together and buy something you need. • Holdbart in Vestby has plenty of cheap food. Only a bike ride away.

14

Edition 06 Volume 76

Social • Become a member of Samfunnet, after a few events the membership has paid for itself! • Don’t walk across the field; you would never step in your own food + don’t climb the hay balls (tractor eggs) • There’s a Festsalen at both Samfunnet at Ur (215). Don’t mix them up! • Be on time for a concert, you don’t want to stand in line when it starts. • Sell your ticket if you are not going to an event, someone always wants to buy your ticket! • Use earplugs during concerts. If you did not contract permanent hearing damage during your russetid you don’t want it now either. Wait until you are at least 70 years old. • Download Linticket, the app for purchasing tickets to the events at Samfunnet. If there are too many on the web site at once, it crashes, but fear not! Wait a second and try again, often the tickets may be available again. • Diggipay is the payment method on Samfunnet, you can get a card at Samfunnet and you can transfer money to the card via the app. Don’t add more money than you are willing to spend in one night.

Dictionary The student lingo is flooded with local words and expressions, here are some of them: ABC-kjelleren: Between Arken, Børsen and Casino on Pentagon 1. Do not confuse it with a real basement. TUNTREET

Kamara? Who dat?

Tord Kristian F. Andersen Journalist Partap Singh Photographer Celine Våga Translator

If one is to mention one artist that has impacted the start of this semester, it’s hard not to mention Kamara. As the first artist preforming on Samfunnet for 1,5 years (and no, UKA does not count) as well as contributing to the opening of the Veterinary Building, Kamara has without any doubts had an impact. Tuntreet has used this opportunity to interview her. “Kamara hates Ås” After a longer soundcheck we meet with a woman in a light green dress and with a contagious smile. She introduces herself as Fatumata, better known by her last name and stage name Kamara. I learn that this is the first time she is in Ås and even though she herself never has been a student she most certainly has lived the student life. Cheap food and alcohol are no strangers to her. These days she works part-time at a bar. As a non-studying student, she admits that she could never imagine herself living here and describes herself as a big city rat. Her lifestyle has a strong connection to her determination to focus on music. The artist dream The former “Urørt”-finalist has “always” known that she would become a popstar, ever since she was a young girl. Kamara says that she sets goals for herself but does not stress if things do not work out as she intended. Her approach to taking things as they come is mostly because of her passion, which overshadows the wish for a prosperous career. “I write for myself ”, the artist reveals. In the meantime, she believes in the concept of “death of the author”, and does not necessarily feel like she “owns” the songs after they have been released, they belong to all of those who listen. Speaking of it, via Spotify for Artists, she confesses that those who mostly listen to her music is 40- and 50-year olds.

often thought “LOL, what the fuck were you doing”, as she sings three-year-old songs. This mostly concerns her own songs. When the singer writes for others she does so upon order and adapts the needs after who she is writing for. The same can be said about contributing to other artists songs. Anyhow, it is clear that writing songs for herself is a great passion. “It is a blast to write songs for others, but I find it difficult to receive songs [from others] myself ”.

Songwriter When it comes to writing songs, she often gathers inspiration from friends, family and films. The lyrics are often personal and work a bit like a time capsule. They reflect who she was at that time and Kamara has

«Lush Life» In the song 20-something she sings the line “Make time, lush life”, so what really is a lush life for Kamara? “Well, it is a lush life” she laughs. “It is the optimal… What you want to get from life”. Still, it isn’t all that

16

easy, something that she elaborates through the song Young Dumb Foolish Girl. The more you grow up, the more you realize that you never really understand anything. “You sold me a fake dream!” she says mildly frustrated and reminisces about the quarter life crisis she had when she moved to Oslo alone. All personal On the other hand, Kamara is a selfproclaimed queen of procrastination. When I ask her what she actually spends time on other than music she mentions YouTube videos of people building houses from scratch in the jungle. “When you first fall into a ‘YouTube rabbit hole’ it’s hard to get back out”. Equally interesting is her

TUNTREET

passion for the True Crime genre. She also loves food, especially Asian cuisine like Indian, Vietnamese and West-African. Stage performance So what is it really like to preform? It’s all right, but when I ask what runs through her head when she sings, she brings up some of those silly thoughts that emerge. “What if I bite the microphone right now?”, “I really want sushi, hope no one stole my nigiri bite backstage”, “Have I clipped my nails?”. To cringe about things from the past several years ago is also mentioned.

When I’m Gone Kamara finds joy in music and expresses strongly that she does not have clear expectations to how her music is supposed to be received. One thing is nevertheless crystal clear: “The music I make is never going to die”. Humans fade, but the extraordinary things people have done and the art they leave behind will stand. Kamara reflects: “I make music, that’s a blast, I’m having fun”, and isn’t that more than enough?

THREE QUICK ONES Favorite animal: Orangutangs, dogs (specifically Border Collie) Where will you travel when corona is over: Jamaica, and go to reggae parties. Weird food you like: Bread, butter, liver paté with a slice of white cheese on top.

Graskurs, a course about grass? No, disappointingly, the Graskurs doesn’t have much to do with grass. During the Graskurs, new students have the opportunity to get acquainted with different student clubs and organizations associated with NMBU. Last year, the Graskurs part 2 was held digitally, but this year the clubs were finally allowed to blossom on stage once again.

TUNTREET Samfunnet is back The atmosphere in Aud.Max was wild, the social distance was according to the regulations, the lights were dimmed, and host of the evening, Ruben Rygh, entered the stage. Unfortunately, it took a little while before his voice got captured by the mic and managed to fill the room. Luckily, the rest of the Graskurs ran without further technical difficulties. The show began with the Board of Samfunnet singing the anthem, “Jeg og’n Torvald og Johannes”. At last, Samfunnet is opened once again. This powerful moment was followed by a film made by Over Rævne, who were all attending a “Rævne Wedding” that weekend. Luckily, all the other social clubs were able to attend physically, and the most demanding physical performances were, without a doubt, Trønderforeninga’s moonshine run and Hannkattene’s traditional aspirant burning. Music, dance and drama We also got our fair share of dances during this year’s Graskurs. Collegium Alfa, Gents Academy, Broderskapet Unity and Feminin & Fornem all presented their alluring dances. Naturally, DÅs, Swingklubben Snurrebass and Leikarringen Frøy, the dance clubs, did the same. These dances were seducing in other ways than the first four. BB Cowboys danced as well, even while riding their horses. That was a true experience. Singing is, of course, also a vital part of the student club life, as demonstrated by our beloved choirs. Pikekoret IVAR presented beautiful singing as always, and we had singalongs both when NGA performed “Dum og deilig” and when Flatlusa played

and sang “Det er meg det samme”. The mood was nice too, when Koneklubben Freidig sang their Eurovision worthy hit “La det gro”. Formula 1 and a beer can Only a few of the social clubs were able to drown out the endless roars of the audience. Sangkoret Lærken showed up with orchestral music and a beercan solo performed by the host himself. As for other wind instruments, Åsblæst’n performed a magnificent version of “Seven Nation Army”. There was rock too, as

Rockeklubben played a wide variety of songs. Nevertheless, the last and loudest performance of the evening was, without a doubt, the chainsaw show performed by Skogbrukerforeningen. It sounded as if several Formula 1 cars were heading straight into Aud.Max. If the Graskurs was a grass course, the chainsaws would have cut the grass the quickest. And for the firstyear students with grass allergies, who chose their health above the party (or didn’t get a ticket), now you finally know what went down at the legendary Graskurs.

ÅS-HERO CELEBRATED: A beer with Halvor Holtestaul Tord Kristian F. Andersen Journalist and photographer Celine Våga Translator

If you don’t know who Halvor Holtestaul is, it’s time for a history lesson. Either as a board member of Samfunnet, the UKE board or as the CEO of SiÅs: Halvor has been through the most. In the occasion of him prior to summer leaving his final position of trust as head of the Operations and Maintenance Committee (OMC), Tuntreet had a few words with “Mr. Student Community” The student Halvor was matriculated in 1956 in the field of study of agriculture and economics. He studied here until he graduated in 1959. During this period, he managed to hold the position of 1. Representative of the board of Samfunnet in 1957, with complete duty to attend. The year following, he held the position of Secretary of the UKEboard, something that today corresponds to Administrative Chief. As of social clubs he is a member of Den X-Clusive Forening PB (PB 132) where he in his days also was the Honourable Chairman. The Revue Man Halvor clearly appreciated life at Ås because when an opportunity came along, he was hired as Business Manager of, at the time six-year-old, Student Community of Ås (SiÅs). The year was 1961, two years since ended education. In fear of losing his feeling of being down-to-earth he started to get involved in student activities again, this time as UKE actor. There would not pass many years before he became a permanent influence in Storywriter Colligate the next 20 years. “It is one of the fondest things I can remember” he recalls with memories dancing in his eyes. I would mention the statement of Kjell Aksnes saying that he is “The student that never stopped being a student”, something that Halvor takes as a compliment right as it is. 20 Edition 06 Volume 76

Mr. Student Community In line with his engagement as pseudostudent he also climbed the ladder of adulthood. Halvor eventually became Office Chief and finally CEO. During his period in SiÅs he participated in several exciting projects. Among other things he was a part of saving the Agricultural Bookstore (today Boksmia) from falling into the hands of the Student Community of Oslo (SiO). SiÅs also started the canteen operations at the college. In many ways his name is nevertheless a synonym of the student village that so many of us currently live in: Pentagon. The Pentagon builder “I was hired in ’61 because at that time money was given to build new student housings” he clearly states. These funds came straight from the National Budget. The money came from a favorable agreement, so they could go straight to building. Ås was primarily given start-up grants for 100 dormitories, and the architect drew ABC. Arken and Børsen alone made 96 dormitories. Was Casino then not to be built? Halvor consulted Kristian Ottosen, at the time SiO-leader, who advised him to push on. And then it was decided. Pentagon I was ABC and a few years later came Pentagon II which was GHIJ. In the

70’s came Pentagon III as KLM (the names where later simplified to Pentagon I & II). Those who won the naming competition received a price of 104kr. Why 104? “A bottle of whisky costed 52kr” Halvor smiles cleverly. The Ås legend 20th May Halvor Holtestaul held his final OMC meeting and leaves a legacy few others compare to. This was celebrated with “Halvors Folk Song” (mel. Bodegavisa), flowers and cake from Samfunnet. “It was quite fun to get a song, I have probably become spoiled by stuff like this”. This is not the first time he has had things named after himself. Halvors Hybel from 1994 proudly caries this name in honor of one of our great Ås-parents. No matter what you might do: You are always welcome in the Bodega, Halvor! If you would like to read more about Halvor, the two times he was written about in Two Beers is recommended. First in TT08 1999 and then again in TT06 2011. Also, a longer interview in TT07 2015, and non the least in the book Ås-students of 150 years.

PHYSICAL MATRICULATION

TUNTREET

It is that time of the year again. All new students of NMBU are to be enrolled. This is marked as a big day with the final gathering of the veterinarians and others. Except for corona restrictions (and Solve Sæbøs bend and stretch), this was a surprisingly normal affair. Tuntreet stopped by to take some pictures, and asked some of the speakers what they thought of finally being able to welcome the students physically again: Tord Kristian F. Andersen Journalist and photographer

Amalie P. Brønmo Translator

Curt Rice (Rektor at NMBU) «A touching start for me as a new rector. I recognize the feelings the new students speak about. I almost felt like a new student too!»

Henrik Aasheim (Minister of Research and Higher Education) «Very enjoyable. Students can meet again, and you can meet students. It’s good, socially. It’s nice that you can have gatherings, and physical teaching.»

Ina Maria Finnerud (Leder of the Student Board and Parliament) «This is one of my absolute favorite days of the academic year. And how it fulfilled my expectations! It was a lovely day, with great speeches, great acts, and even greater students. NMBU is lucky!»

THE PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION

If the students’ votes represented the people Anne Tove Græsdal Tornes Våge Journalist

Pauline Marie Søndenå Translator

Tuntreet has conducted a survey among the students of NMBU to find out which parties they will vote for during the parliamentary election. According to the survey, MDG and SV have gained the most votes among the students.

PERCENTAGE

198 out of 5600 students answered the survey, which amounts to 3.5% of the students. The survey was posted on Tuntreet’s social media and can explain why the support is not so representative of the entire university. 10.2% of the students are politically active, so maybe some of them will be voted in on September 13th?

TUNTREET Who are the students? Two faculties dominate the survey; REALTEK with 22.2% and LANDSAM with 26.8%. Furthermore, individual courses have 15.7%, followed by KBM with 12.1% and MINA with 11.1%. A majority of women responded to the survey with 60.7%, 37.8% men and the others 1.5%. The majority, with 60.4%, are in the age group 22-25 years old. Furthermore, 22.3% are in the age group 18-21, and 15.2% are between 26-29 years old. Most have voted in advance, while 18.2% will vote on the election day. This may be the reason why many have reported moving to Ås. The majority has voted in an election before, but 8.2% are voting for the first time in this election.

Which study year is most represented? Most of the people who answered are in their fourth year, followed by third and fifth year. Second and third year has 14.2% and 10.2%. What are the students voting for? As mentioned, MDG has the best support with 24.4%, followed by SV with 20.8%. Then comes Rødt with 10.2%, and Sp and Høyre who both has less than 10% support. Most people will vote for what they normally do in elections, while 15.3% will vote for something else in this election.

How would the distribution of seats be if the NMBU students could decide? There are in total 169 mandates that are distributed based on the area and population in the constituencies. If the NMBU student were to decide, we would see a distribution like this:

NMBUs Parliament

TWO BEERS WITH

RUBEN RYGH Going all out throughout his years at Ås, he has not gone unnoticed. You have seen him on stage at revues, working for Samfunnet, behind a camera, at Caféklubben, or maybe even as a student ambassador. Guro Størdal Journalist

30 Utgåve 06 Årgang 76

Margreta Brunborg Photographer

Aleksander M. Munkejord Translator

TWO BEERS

“Getting involved - that’s the stuff” Avoided Ås His student life did not start in Ås. Actually, he actively avoided NMBU, wanting a big city with a proper student life. Therefore, he went to Bergen, but for no more than eighteen months. He soon realized that it just was not right for him, and after stumbling upon the program called Renewable Energy in Ås, he gave the Agrarmetropole a chance. He never looked back, except in disbelief of how dumb he had been… Photography from day one In Bergen he learned that it is wise to sign up and look for activities as soon as possible. He knew that he wanted to get involved with the photo committee, so at graskurs part 1 he asked around and was referred to “a big hairy guy with a camera”, also known as Petter Meeg, who pulled him into the committee and set him up for work already at the Semester Kickoff. He was also involved in the Photo Club, who had several photo enthusiasts pushing it through. After a while he joined the board of the club, but as many of the enthusiasts were leaving Ås, and Ruben got busy with other volunteer positions, and with the Covid pandemic making things even worse, the Photo Club saw little activity. Now that things are opening up, he hopes to start some action there once again. “We have got it all just standing there. Darkroom and everything!” he says. Exactly what will happen is not clear just yet. “The program is coming,” he says, smiling. Revue Another activity that has made its mark on his time here at Ås are the revues. The revue timeline started at a rather unusual place, at “Klimaspillet”(The Climate Game)! He joined Klimaspillet during his first semester at Ås, and they were invited to UKA17 in Trondheim, to visit the local Klimaspillet section over there. There, they attended the UKErevue “Ta-de-du!”. The only former on-stage experience he had was from the final act of a performance

UKErevyen 2018 won the NM cup for student revues for the scene «Der untergang on ice».

back in 9th grade, but after seeing the revue in Trondheim he was eager to try it out himself! Back in Ås he found that the deadline for applying for UKEactor had passed, but he submitted a late application anyways and got through both audition one and two, and all of a sudden he was on stage during the UKErevue 2018! “The revue time was amazing!” he recalls. A strong fellowship was formed, also strengthened by the passing of one of the central pieces of the revue, Even Skramstad. When they were done with the revue, they wanted to find a collective together. They were all prepared to live poorly, commute far and pay a lot, but then they stumbled upon Stova, right here in the center of Ås! Several of them moved in there, and Ruben has lived there ever since. He has greatly appreciated being able to live in Stova with close friends, having the opportunity to frolic around like he wants to. There has been one ongoing conflict though: Coffee vs. tea. It has been all about having the most extensive shelf, with different kinds of drinks and brewing equipment; but Ruben feels content now, as other faithful coffee drinkers have moved in.

The Stove revue was a proper event, with their own props, songs and a sign.

The Corona projects When you are active and have a determination like Ruben, a shutdown of the community can provide new and unknown possibilities. Rather than sitting down moping, Ruben and his collective took the initiative to do things they would not be able to otherwise. The first thing they did was make their own revue in the collective, “The Stova Revue”, which can be found in its entirety on Instagram. After that, a greenhouse, some hens and a pizza oven came along, one after another. Now, they can reap what they sowed, literally, with tomatoes in the greenhouse, fresh eggs from the hens, and homemade pizza. An overarching goal has been to do it all as cheap as possible. Thus, they have done as much as they could by themselves, and have driven to both Oslo and Ytre Enebakk to pick up parts for the different projects.

TO BRUNE Change of plans The plans for 2020 were originally quite different. The fall of 2019 he was elected Chief of Events at Samfunnet, and was supposed to fill the house with activities and events. “I had really little experience from the Events Commitee, but I had participated at a lot of events!” he laughs. He held the position for two months and twelve days before the pandemic put all activity to a halt. He remembers well the message they posted on Facebook the first time Samfunnet closed down, about how they hoped to reopen after Easter. Instead, they had to get acquainted with infection control, and completely reorganize how to host events, trying out cohorts and other strategies. The board themselves did not get much out of this, but Ruben feels like they helped testing it all out so that UKA20 could be hosted as smoothly as possible. “Settling down” He is now entering his last year at Ås, and would like to ease it down a little, in regard to his volunteering. “Now I work a little at Caféklubben, work as a multitool for Samfunnet, if they for example need a host for graskurs part 2, I am leader of Tenorens Fagforening, and Formeringssjef for Sangkoret Lærken, and work as a student ambassador”, he recites. “And also, I’m a barman at Samfunnet”, he recalls a while later.

You will find him behind the counter at Café Klubben!

He realizes that he may not have settled down completely, but these are all things he enjoys doing. Being a student ambassador, at least, he finds pretty nice! “Getting paid for something I feel like I’m doing anyways” he laughs. Talking positively about NMBU is no problem at all. But one thing keeps coming up: “Photography is the most fun” he says. And among other things he repeatedly ends up chatting about cameras and photos with the photographer during the interview. The commitment of other volunteers is the driving force He is anxious about how things will be in the coming year, for the student environment after corona, but has faith that it will all go well. “It’s so much fun!” he says. There are so many committed, cool people.” This is what he finds the most motivating to keep himself engaged. He is aware of the cliché, but it means there is something to it. “Getting involved is just so important, you meet so many people, and Samfunnet is really unique!”, he says. When you go out you meet friends and other acquaintances at Samfunnet almost every time. 32 Edition 06 Volume 76

TUNTREET

Dear Ruben! No challenge is too demanding, and no obstacle is too big for you when at first you’ve tasted blood and a new idea is brewing. You have a determination matched by no one, and when you add the creativity of MacGyver and the economic sense of Scrooge McDuck, you are able to achieve a lot with very limited means, like the pizza oven and hen house, for example. We cannot write a greeting without mentioning your party skills, or rather, your after-party skills. Whether that is due to a severe case of clinophobia, or just a genuine joy of life, we do not know, but you surely never say no to a decent after-party (or indecent, for that matter). You always care for others, and make sure that everyone around you feels good. Despite your somewhat impaired hearing, you have an outstanding ability to listen and to carry a conversation. That is something we truly appreciate! Big hug from Ingrid, Marit Serianna and Oscar We write to you with joy, eagerness and hope. Some may say that random events brought us together at the board in this office wing, but we choose to believe that it was meant to be. Despite a board duration characterized by a state of emergency and digital meetings, we are truly grateful for how you have taught us to keep both our mood and spirit high, even if the job has sometimes felt hopeless. Everyone needs an “AOB-item” in their life, as it keeps us sharp and provides joy and variation. AOB is perfect for people with a lot on their schedule and a scattered mind, and it allows flexibility. We hope that you keep on with these AOB-items, even if we no longer gather weekly for discussions and debates in the meeting room. May the future bring even more late nights and fun pranks, like multiple ferné-bombs (There, you are a pioneer)! Best wishes from everyone in the Board of Samfunnet 2020. Dear Ruben! As first heir of a farm with no less than three goats, you were quick in securing the self sufficiency of Stova. When the crops from the windowsills and your aquaponic system were no longer satisfactory, you designed and built both a greenhouse and a hen house. You always impress, be it with tools, a pen, tiller, microphone, harpoon, camera or spatula. With your man-bun, plaid shirt, kefir grains, sourdough bread and homebuilt pizza oven, you have now passed both LEEK100, -200 and -300. We congratulate you, and hope that the new Stova carries enough sense to avoid serving you french-press-low-status-coffee! If not, just make yourself something nice in Caféklubben. Thanks for letting us enjoy the smell of your Asian experiments, wake you up with fly kicks through your door, and hearing you laugh out loud when you are alone. You are a vital part of the down-to-earth working-class avant-gardism of Stova. We love you so much, Rubbe/Ruby mac Rubster/ Rubydub/Rubidubidoo. Lots of hugs from old Stova Edition 06 Volume 76 33

Green Festival 2021 A social overstimulation for environmentalists and enthusiasts of local production. The Green Festival is one of the few events environmentalists can gather around, forget dystopian UN-reports, just lean back and enjoy. Ås’ many choir enthusiasts could rejoice over the fact that both Sangkoret Lærken and Pikekoret Ivar were present during the festival. Pernille Fritheim, a diligent Lærke, says: “It was really fun, especially because the audience was so lively, and the weather was great! The best part was seeing the Rådhusparken wake up, with both locals and students. It was extra fun because for me, this Saturday became sort of a symbol of society finally opening up again!”.

The Green Festival in Ås was held on 20th-22nd of August this year. The Green Festival is an annual musical and cultural festival for environmentally conscious people. Event manager Katharina Karlsen Hessen describes it like this: “The Green Festival is special because everyone who participates unite around the sustainability problematics. We try to promote a society that cares about experiences, and where consumption is anchored in local and environmentally friendly alternatives. Locally sourced food, small businesses, dance, games and music. We believe that most people wish for a future where quality of life and consideration for the environment is the center of attention – therefore, The Green Festival is first and foremost a meeting ground for people”. The list of activities during the festival is long. The town square was transformed

into a marketplace. There, one could buy locally produced carrots or be recruited by various non-profit organizations. In addition, they had everything from face paint to bumblebee-walks. The stage was used for dance classes during the day, and a dance floor during the evening. Katharina comments: “The festival was intended to be a meeting place for everyone – students, pensioners, families with children… and I do think that we succeeded!”. Few things are as unifying as music. Every artist had environmental activism in focus. It was the folk music trio Mikkel Rev who were given the highly regarded task of opening the whole festival on Friday evening. The stage had been transformed into a jungle of living room plants for the occasion, and only one monstera had to meet its demise during a lively stomping act during the first concert.

Friday’s headliner was Moddi. Among other things, he became famous for playing folk music raising a middle finger to the government’s environmental politics. Every time he mentioned the activists in Repparfjord or the night train to Berlin, cheering from a hundred picnic blankets in the Rådhusparken could be heard. “In terms of booking, it was really important that the artists were genuine fighters for a more sustainable earth. I think it became clear to everyone during Moddis’ concert on Friday night that the music was not just a diversion from our focus on a green message, but actually an essential part of the message itself.” Katharina commented. Saturday evening’s big three bands were Ås’ own Flatlusa, the story tellers in “Where the fuck did Norway go?!”, and Punketorsk. Those who think the choice of artists for this years’ festival was based on colourful band names, are not entirely correct – but not wrong either. When asked whether creative band names were a criterion for the selection process, Katharina answers: “Of course we only book bands with their own special humoristic twist. Laughter and

36 Edition 06 Volume 76

music are the pillars of sustainability!”. The attentive spectator will have noticed that some of the artists in Mikkel Rev also played in the band Punketorsk, who was Saturdays’ headliner. They were the band who got the whole park to stand up and dance. With Ås town hall and the mayors’ office behind them, and the sun on the horizon, the audience released all inhibitions and danced genuinely, postpandemically, yes, almost normally to famous songs such as: “Kor Vart Det Av Fiskan” og “Kjerringtind”. Katharina comments: “(…) when Punketorsk gets the whole park to dance wildly while singing “Æ villa svøm te rækelainn, men trålen tråla bort fesk og tang! Ingen ræka svømme meir. Og det e itj længer fugla som hete Geir!» Oh yes, that is the Green Festival indeed!”. Maybe one day the thoughts and lifestyle that The Green Festival are based on will become the rule rather than the exception. For next years’ festival Katharina hopes that: “Norway and the world have come further in the work for green change. And that the festival can be a celebration of everything we have accomplished!”.

READERS LETTER

Dear fellow students, welcome to student life! By: Tuva Todnem Lund

Whoever you are, wherever you come from – welcome! There are few things I have not tried as a student, and my ego is just big enough for me to give you some advice. You are probably curious about what your years of studies will bring. Maybe you’ve heard of the parties, the sense of community, the freedom and the food. Your studying time is much more than just noodles and oatmeal! This could be the best time of your life, and there is so much to look forward to! You have probably gotten a lot of information by now. It is demanding to navigate this new space, both academically, socially and geographically. Remember that many of those around you are busy dealing with new things as well. It is okay not to remember everything, and it’s alright if you don’t master it all at once. You are going to burn some frozen pizzas, procrastinate all day at the study hall, miss events and have a chair covered in clothes. All will be perfectly fine. Prioritize. Take care of yourself. You are going to have fun and learn as you go! As a student you have a unique opportunity to challenge yourself. There is room for trial and error, and to learn from them. Some challenges will be bigger than what you can handle on your own.

Tuva Todnem Lund, leader of the National Union of Students in Norway. Photo: NSO / Skjalg Bøhmer Vold

Use those around you. Ask for help. You should also know that there are elected representatives around you, who are there for you. We have a great student democracy which deals with challenges and works for you. We in The National Union of Students in Norway fight for every student in the country. Among other things, we make sure you have a good place to stay, and that you may receive more money from month to month. Join activities. The time for new experiences is now. Take every chance you get. Join student associations, find a hobby, try a new sport with NMBUI or influence your day-to-day university life through the student democracy. There are so many possibilities, and this is the time to try new things! You will find someone with similar (or completely different!) interests, and suddenly you’ll have new friends! Dear new student. If you follow this advice you won’t have to make the same mistakes I did, though you might miss out on a few good stories. What you learn these next few years will contribute to saving the world, but no pressure. Make sure you vote in advance before September 10th. Good luck with your studies!

CHRONICLE

What Unites us Elina Turbina Journalist

Majken Chrugchang Jørgensen Illustrator

The autumn recruitment season for student associations is in full swing! Our “forenings” take up a very special place in the culture of Ås. Clubs and organizations, sororities and fraternities create an unique experience for each NMBUstudent, either by presenting a multitude of ideas and goals or by giving their members a sense of belonging. Let me tell you a story about how one fraternity made my experience unique last year. *All names are changed, and identities are protected. First, let’s establish what kind of ideas these “forenings” present. For instance, Hankattene are in a century-long process of turning boys into gentlemen. Understandable. Gents set out to make boys into men. Also sort of makes sense. Unity, on the other hand, does not claim to transform its members into new beings. The brotherhood stands on three pillars of characteristics for a true NMBU student - unity, charity, and academia. But what exactly do these words mean for the Unity boys? 38 Edition 06 Volume 76

The Good I am not a member of Unity yet, even though the idea has crossed my mind a couple of times since I started at NMBU. So, instead, I am scrolling through their website to figure out what they are about. Unity, the first and most obvious pillar of a member of such a fraternity, is about giving a helping hand to a fellow brother. With the next pillar being charity, the United Aid project for UNICEF, Unity’s shared initiative with Feminin & Fornem, comes to mind. And lastly, academia - support

in the present and further academic and career ventures, I guess. Very noble, you might think. Very alluring. But what would it take for me to get into this enchanting fraternity? The Bad Since I am yet to apply for a vacant position (and I assume my application would have been denied both before and after this chronicle, due to an obvious application criterion), I cannot name all the challenges a potential Unity brother should complete

CHRONICLE to get into this society. And, sure, there is probably some nasty stuff in there. It is common for the applicants of any fraternity or sorority to go through some degrading processes to prove their loyalty. And, hey, that is to be expected! As long as it is just about the humiliation of the applicant, right?! But what if it crosses the line into, you know, the outside world?

documenting the catfishing process for the proof of their deed. After both boys successfully got into Unity, I was blissfully unaware, for at least half a year, that I was a prop to get into a society that values unity, charity, and academia.

The Ugly I am at a party in May, enjoying my cheap beer and making drunk besties. And I tell my new bestie: “I could never date in Ås!”. She asks me why, to which I begin telling her about my “date” with a guy who soon after ended up becoming a Unity member. As soon as I mention the brotherhood, my new friend goes: “Oh my god, Nina* had the same experience!”. Nina then shares it with me, a story almost identical to mine. That’s when something clicks in my “Isbjørn”-filled brain.

Board’s Comment After contacting the board of Unity to inform them about the circumstances of the article, Tuntreet asked them three questions that they declined to answer. Here are the questions:

You see, I matched with Felix* on Tinder, and he immediately asked me out. My other date just got cancelled, so I agreed despite not talking to this guy for more than a second beforehand. I have not been on dates for a while because of some previous experiences, and I thought to myself - I should break the chain and start over in a new place! So, I did. But when the time comes for the date, instead of Felix, Lauritz* shows up. I did not even remember what Felix looked like, both guys being blonde Norwegians, so I assumed we were about to sit down and hang for a bit. That’s when Lauritz goes: “As you can see, I’m not Felix”. I think to myself, “aren’t you?” but fuck it, same-same, and I invite him to hang out with me since Felix apparently stood me up and “was scheduling way too many dates”. As Lauritz and I talk for about half an hour, Felix is acting as an NPC (Red.amn: Non playable character), walking around the same empty cafe, and passing us by. Lauritz laughs: “Is this a fucking prank?”. And what do you know, it truly was a fucking prank. We are still in the Ugly part I knew what happened as soon as it happened, I have seen it in movies before: this was a case of using a girl, without a disclaimer or an explanation, as an object through which an unnecessary process gets fulfilled. The NPC dude was probably just

Where exactly does this task fit in among the three core values of Unity?

- Do you deny that individuals in your association has done this? - What is the goal of tricking girls on a date? - Are you going to change anything related to admissions in light of this? It is (not) That Deep Apart from my drunk messages to Lauritz about how terrible it was of him to never inform me about this or apologize, I could, of course, find ways to explain why he would do something like this. It could be ignorance, the failure of seeing how this could be humiliating and hurtful. Dehumanizing someone for a joke, assuming the effect is short-term. Making the person on the other end disposable, as if they would not feel anything, or even exist, later on. But haven’t we left the idea of us, girls, as objects in 2018? (See: the

objectification debate, TT05 in 2018) People know NMBU in part because of these “forenings”. The variety of sororities and fraternities make the university experience much more exciting than at any other place in Norway, I am sure. But we are not in a film from the late 1990s where girls are degraded by some frat dudes. I believe that the fraternities could live on beautifully with all their excessive partying without using girls in such a way in the process. It wasn’t the worst thing ever, but does the bar for how we treat women have to be set so low? Values of the true NMBU Student There are safety issues, assault and stalking cases happening at NMBU to this day. There is sexism in traditions of certain student societies (the Hankatt-dick has shrunk for a reason). There is this underlying feeling that, despite NMBU being an open space full of diversity and acceptance, the girls still cannot feel truly safe here. Maybe something must change this time around? Autumn is just around the corner, so keep the recruitment season in mind. Girls, consider holding off on those Tinder-dates just for a little while. There are many dating app-free gems walking around campus, so charm them the old-fashioned way. Boys, while it might be easy to get a bit carried away, try to remember that there is usually a tomorrow, and that your actions might affect someone else’s tomorrow more than your own.

by the decade the 80s Tuntreet of the 80s gradually loses the intense political tone that has characterized the 70s. It doesn’t disappear completely, but it is, in many ways, a more nuanced debate. The 80s can be described as a transition period, because I have never seen a bigger change from the beginning to the end of a decade. Let’s take a closer look! Tord Kristian F. Andersen Journalist

An old-fashioned Tuntre I call Kirsten Flagstad on the phone, the editor in 1980, who remembers the “cave” they had in Tivoli very well. In this office they had editorial meetings once a week, and between the different issues there was a Tuntre debate. Ås Trykk gave them free access to cut and paste the issues, an immense voluntary work, especially considering that there were only 10-15 active members at the time. Also, it is worth mentioning that the board members at Studentsamfunnet got credit points. The editor earned the equivalent of 6 credits. Poor economy In issue eight from 1980, it is written that “the economy is bad, to say the least”. Tuntreet was in a tricky position at the time. The total support was 15.000 kr per semester, and if it hadn’t increased, Tuntreet would have had to cut the paper quality and page numbers. Out of these, the House and Finance Board contributed with 5.000 kr. The students decided that the content should be smarter and more to the point. During the spring semester in 1981, it was decided to only publish four issues with just 32 pages each. In an editorial later that year, it was said that the editor actually had to be the editor, and short things down. The editorial staff If we are to believe the article “Den store Tuntrefamilien” or “The big Tuntre family”, also from the same year, the spirit was still high within the editorial staff. In 1982, Tuntreet finally moved from the old space in Tivoli to the new office wing at Samfunnet, where we still are today. At the time, Samfunnet had been going through a total renovation, where it assumed its current form. A milestone was reached in 1985 with the first front page 42 Edition 06 Volume 76

in colors. Throughout the 80s we still see lots of themed issues, with a wide range of material. Theme and content The focus had turned to environment, feminism, equality, drugs, abortion, GA, state budgets, South America, homosexuals, racism, pornography, house rent prices, AIDS, Christianity, asbestos, future study plans, the Soft Man and lots of weird and/or important things. Out of the less important things I would like to mention that Samfunnet started to

ban smoking on their arrangements. The president of Zambia received 1000 doses of ox sperm as a gift. Another issue from the 80s worth mentioning was the question whether Thorvald and Tora could still be called agricultural students, as NHL was in a noticeable change. The Tuntre debate allowed a freer debate, especially as Tuntreet tried to keep the paper neutral. It eventually changed its name to Tuntrerapp, still with the same content. In TT14 1985 it was claimed that the future

would lead to a class division between those who master the media and those who do not. In the light of today’s society, I can clearly see that this hypothesis is not as exaggerated as they may have thought back then. The modernization of Tuntreet Luckily, the economy turned around, due to several measures. In a conversation with Sigmund Bråtveit, editor from 1988, I learn that the printing process had changed, and a tiny digital revolution had taken place. The digitalization became more and more noticeable. In 1982, the access to computers in Ås was limited to research and training. This changed quickly. The layout was gradually computerized in 1987. At that time, a group of eight people worked with layout. They were divided into two groups, and twice a week and once a month, the new issues were made. Only parts of it were processed on a computer, and the rest was done as usual, analogously, in Ås Trykk. In 1988, Tuntreet borrowed its very own Mac. Tuntreet once more went through its own little digital revolution, in both good and bad ways (ref. late 90s, early 00s). Just like

cheese has been a regular part of advertising in previous decades, you notice that the next couple of years the PCs are coming with full force. A new era In 1986, Tuntreet changes its look again. This time the font is softer and thicker, as if it was written with paintbrushes. This was also used in Tunrapp. Here, the new column Hankattvisjoner was introduced. It is natural to look at this as a predecessor to today’s Foreningsprat. The new and good economy allowed the editorial staff to receive good training, which came in handy, and resulted in a high journalistic level. The editors retained the structure with one editor-in-chief and one soon-to-be editor until 1989. After this, two people were elected for the first time at once, which lasted until the early 2000s. However, it was not only Tuntreet that noticed changes. The gender balance was heading towards…

eeeeh, a balance, to a much greater extent than previous (see drawing). Same old Tuntreet Still, it is worth pointing out that if you pick up an old issue you can recognize a lot. They had the UKEradio going every UKEyear with the name Agradio. Tunpampen is a portrait interview of a so-called “pamp” and can be seen as a foreshadowing to the next decade’s “Two beers”. It was somewhat controversially received. Towards the end of the decade, the agricultural bookstore moves to Smia, where we find it today. The 80s was the decade when Tuntreet started college, but as the 90s came, we were well-established at Samfunnet. We started analog and ended it digitally. This is, in many ways, the last decade I can call “vintage”. The digital workflow, and let alone Tuntreet’s establishment of its own website, leads us into the “modern” 90s. Until next time!

This is a place for discussing matters that do not require a whole page. If you have a case that we should cover, please contact us at Facebook or at tuntreet@samfunnetiaas.no. “The Students’ House” is on its way, better late than never REALTEK has had a space shortage for a while now. Therefore, this spring it was decided that there would be an 800 m2 pavilion built to give students more space on campus. The pavilion will be named “The Students’ House” and will mainly consist of social zones, masters’ places, reading halls and rooms for study associations. There will also be 15 group rooms. According to the original plan the pavilion was to be opened, at its latest, during the autumn break. However, disagreements regarding the placement and investigation requirements have postponed the opening to five weeks. The pavilion will now be placed between wing1 and wing5 at TF, and will officially be presented the 5th of November (at this moment). “The Students House” will also have an outdoors area. In the same time period, there will also be a great number of renovations done for lecture halls, labs and group rooms in wing 1. So don’t be surprised when there’s suddenly a new building on campus. New mailbox/package box for SiÅs tenants The postal service has, in agreement with SiÅs, placed mailboxes/mailcabinets at Pentagon and Skogveien. Through the postal service’s webpage, it is now possible to reserve mailboxes. This means that you can get your packages delivered there instead of the post office or having to pick it up at the store. This will be open 24 hours a day and is self-served; a big advantage as the postal office is normally open while students are attending lectures. One freshman infected, but no outbreak at the Buddy party One freshman from REALTEK was participating in a Buddy party the Thursday before the Buddy Week. The next day he was tested and got the positive test back on Saturday. The REALTEK and KBM barbecue party was therefore canceled and numerous Buddies that had been in the same cohort during the Buddy Party were put in quarantine. The barbecue party luckily continued for the other faculties based on clearly separated cohorts. The freshmen that had been at the same Buddy party had to get tested with three rapid Covid tests the period following, and several where also tested with regular Covid tests. Testing revealed that none had been infected. Student Board leader Ina Maria Finnerud comments to Tuntreet: “A case of infection is never fun, but I am incredibly proud and

impressed by how we have handled it at NMBU. We would never have made it without good Buddy Chiefs and freshmen taking the infection control rules seriously. This also gave us an opportunity to test our cohort-based event system, which worked well. I am happy that we weren’t forced to cancel more events than necessary and that everyone had a nice Buddy Week”.

P R I E S T LY THOUGHTS

”UBUNTU!” The Norwegian men’s national team gathers and shouts their motto every time they enter the field – before a battle, after a timeout, after the break. “Ubuntu!”

TUNTREET

Tomm Kristiansen writes a lot about ubuntu in his book “Africa - en vakker dag” (trans: a beautiful day). The Norwegian journalist, author and earlier foreign correspondent for NRK writes a lot about his experiences from his stay as a correspondent in South Africa. The book is thoughtful, charming, provoking and funny – all at once. Kristiansen writes that ubuntu is Africa’s gift to humanity, but that it is barely translatable into other languages. You would have to use a whole lexicon page. The word originates from Zulu and means fellowship, community, solidarity and nearness. Ubuntu is a philosophy of life where individualism has no place. A philosophy that both Nelson Mandela and archbishop Desmond Tutu would be familiar with. One becomes human through other human beings. Ubuntu is distinguished by immersion, hospitality and generosity. Theologians have attempted one translation: “I am, because we are. And because we are, I am.” One has to belong to a fellowship, and it is in this fellowship with other human beings that we exist at heart. Ubuntu means that you celebrate the successes of others. And at the same time; when one fails, everyone fails. That is most likely what appeals to the handball team! A handball team must cherish the achievements of other team members. The team must endure failure as a team. If one misses the decisive penalty, the whole team has missed. There is no scapegoat, only one fellowship for better or for worse. There is much beauty in this – and maybe I find it more so, as I love handball. There are few things other than handball that makes me emotional. As a priest, I meet many types of people in different situations in life. A common theme is that we all need people around us. Some of us love to have a group of people around all the time – others need “only” a few. But we all need someone. A new term is here yet again, and many are thankful for being back on campus, in the lecture halls and on association gatherings. Others find it overwhelming, struggling to find their place. Maybe we, as a community here at NMBU, can embrace ubuntu and dare to stand together with one another, even at times when this is neither comfortable nor easy? As a student priest, I am available to you all, when life gets too big or too small. I will cherish your good days, and stand with you on the tougher ones. Ingrid, student priest at NMBU.

Ingrid U. Øygard NMBU and Sigurd A. Bakke are the student priests. Their office is in the basement of Urbygningen. They are available if you need someone to talk to, seek advice or have a discussion. The office is open on Wednesdays from 11:00 to 15:00, but also available other days. Appointments are made through: io484@kirken. no , 95919318 eller Sigurd: sigurd.a.bakke@nmbu. no , 99015790

COLUMNS

The office wing Have a nice autumn, dear students! We are finally back after, hopefully, great a summer break! To all new students; welcome, and to all old students; welcome back!

We at the office wing are excited and enthusiastic for the reopening of Studentsamfunnet. As you may have noticed, UKA is recruiting its commitee chiefs and is drawing up the first budget, which they will share with us all on the General Assembly the 1st of November. The Business Committee (NU) is working incessantly to find good solutions towards the Career Day on October 20th. It is decided that it will be a digital event. In addition, physical events will be hosted before and after the Career Day, so we hope to see you there. We in the NU are also looking forward to hosting a Tuesday Refill at Samfunnet on the September 7th, and a company presentation with VEDAL on Thursday the 9th. Hope to see you there!

The Board of Samfunnet has finally reopend for the first time since November, and it is good to see that life has returned to the building. We are quite pleased with the newly finished Buddy Week as well as other events throughout the month. We have been working on some good infection control solutions, and hope to make room for even more guests on our events as quickly as possible. The term program is now published, and we are looking forward to Donkeyboy at the semester’s kickoff on Saturday the 11th. We at the Board of Samfunnet recommend that everyone joins Samfunnet. You will get better prices on our events and may join our members-only parties! If you are glowing with enthusiasm, we urge you to apply for committee positions at Samfunnet, UKA in Ås, NU and Tuntreet. UKA needs committee chiefs in all their blocks, NU’s position for sponsor assistant is vacant, and Samfunnet is looking for

students to the Bodega to run events, technicians for concerts and new people in marketing. - Apply now!

NONOGRAM

The goal of a nonogram is to shade in as many squares as indicated by the number in the column above, or on the row next to it. The numbers show how many shaded squares are connected. Two numbers show two “sequences”. There needs to be at least one empty square between each sequence. The squares with an “x” cannot shaded in. This will result in an image if done correctly. It is best to start with the big numbers, as no no matter where they are, they will overlap with the same boxes. When done, an image will appear!

YOUR REF: The Culture OUR REF: the hearth FADERLOFTET, THE 1. Sept IN THE 119th K.Å. The Administrative Director has, in all sincerity, granted the Buddy Week a lot of leeway in terms of beautiful weather and festive freshmen. With this comes bibulous nachspiels at the Faderloft, where freshmen have experienced a great and momentous Culture. The inhabitants of the Agrarian Metropole have taken much delight in the grace of our Director’s benevolence, but are they really exploiting it? Drink in no way to trivial matters, Administrative Director! Our Administrative Director has chosen to give the populace of the Agrarian Metropole an opportunity to show themselves from a better point of view, an opportunity they should embrace with both hands! The halls of the Faderloft are busy with Culturally yearning Hankatter, but suffer unduly from a silent eastern wing – better known as Aspirantgangen. If one is tempted by the desire to embellish your student years with Culture and Kildebrygg in the oldest social association in Norway, the Signatory and the Administrative Director implores the general public to apply for membership. This is a circumstance which will satisfy one’s affection for Kildebrygg, in addition to other desires. Cheers for the 119th Cultural year, Administrative Director! Come, come! Over here New or experienced All and any studentress and student Maybe this will be the term of the ages? Long days pass into wild nights Outside and inside Legs beat Books change ownership It is finally here New term, here we come! Confident yet Rumours spread Are you the one we seek? Eager, womanly and culinarian You should visit! Infovors with us We look forward to it!

To all the magnificent students of Ås! Pusen Brede has charmingly mentioned us on Instagram a few days ago: “A kind of dance group which are supposed to be sheep.” Yes, the summer is over and the flock returns from the mountains, into cabins, houses, flats and apartments. DÅs is ready to dance after a long break from the dance floor. If you want to move from side to side – maybe in the embrace of a gentleman from Gents – or maybe just dance with your heels into the ceiling, your teeth in the tapestry on the table, we will cheer you on! The members of the dance group started the term with a course in pole dancing, so that we might – for once – beat Hankattene in pole dancing in their own loft. Rævne has, yet again, bought us on auction, so we want to recommend that the they stow away all notions of affection (especially if it is breakable). Otherwise, we are looking forward to a new and eventful term ! We’ll bleat later!

New term, new students, new association, Torvald and Tora are together again. Welcome to all! A group of MC enthusiasts are working on putting the tires on the map, and we were established this summer. Now, we are looking forward to wonderful trips and social gatherings. Do you desire freedom and adrenaline? Maybe, with the MC, you will fit in. Sincerely. Emilie Reitan, leader NMBU MC

Have you heard...?

relation to this.... Question mark ????

Puzzled Khrono says that student representatives on the University Board have voted for Curt Rice. Don’t the students have anything to say in these circumstances? That it comes as a big surprise on most people should be thought provoking. Sjur is NMBU Doesn’t sound like the student representatives have any contact with the students, no Not so black and white Everyone on the board (incl. students) are first and foremost board members and not representatives. That is because everyone on the board is elected on a non-binding mandate and consequently expected to make their own choices as to what is best for NMBU. It is a little complicated, but that is how the Board of University works. Sjur is NMBU I understand, but what is the point of having students on the Board if they can not represent the views of the students? In that case, it is better to have more qualified board members? Okay But they still wish him luck on behalf of the students (:

Loyal NMBU student Very disappointed by the Board of University. Imagine changing out good ol’ Sjur who everyone loves, with a businessman who jumps from university to university and doesn’t seem to have any background in sustainability?

Rice must turn around Thanks a lot to the University Board which appoints a career and position hunting rector who wants to use NMBU as a step on the way to a bigger/more important position e.g. rector at UiO. I know he is the best qualified person as he’s a linguist himself and comes from a university which is NMBUs antonym when it comes to subjects, students, rank, level of ambition, size, history and tradition. That makes sense :):) Svingom UiO has elected a rector so this is a strawman argument. Sjur has been a good rector, and I understand that people are surprised and disappointed. At the same time, I don’t think I am going to present Curt Rice as a bad choice. He has led KiFkomiteen, been the prorector at UiT, led HiOA to become OsloMet. He is known as a student-friendly rector. Sjur is NMBU I think Rice is an effective and knowledgeable rector, but he doesn’t seem like the right rector for nmbu. I don’t think he will follow the values of the university and the traditions Nothankyou He changes university faster than SiÅs gets complaints. Bummer He’s also known for being a stubborn bloke who doesn’t listen 7r I think most students are left with a question mark in

Driftsnestleder Why has the FB user “Driftsleder Samfunnet” become a single continous commercial for SiÅs? Future allodialcatalog model Such a mockery by the state to offer half of what the farmers have suggested in the agricultural settlement!
