When the Nights Are Long The cold and dark Norwegian winter has now surely gained its foothold, and the crossing by Pentagon means less and less. The exam period is rushing towards us, and for I, the undersigned, it has already begun as this edition enters the print. I know now that most people are looking forward to the end of term, coming home for Christmas, greasy Christmas food, all that stuff. Concerning Christmas food; the Christmas feast we all frolic in. There are few sensations that beat ripping the skin off the fat-dripping, long, luscious medister sausage, and when you drive it onto a fork to thrust it passionately down your throat. The sound of the knife slicing through the crispy rind sends shivers down my spine. When your throat goes dry, it is advantegous to grease it with an exuberant supply of liquid. Your Christmas food may also be spattered with a succulent scoop of thick gravy. As you may understand, Christmas dinner can be an ecstatic and delightful

experience. The same thing could be said about leading Tuntreet. This is my last edition as editor of this paper, and I could not have been more proud. I am so glad that we, through this whole Corona pandemic, have worked so much for our admirable newspaper. It is especially nice to end it with a special edition such as this. Finally, I would like to thank the editorial staff, my fellow editors, the office ward and the students in in Ås for making this a great year, even though we have (and still are) in an unusual situation. As I let go of the rudder, I wish Guro and Tord good luck steering Tuntreet into the future. I look forward to see how Tuntreet will develop in the years to come. See Where the Students Are From! The students at the agrarmetropol are from all over Norway, and the world in general. In a survey held by Tuntreet nearly 400 answered where they came from. Here are the results - perhaps somebody else is from the same place as you? Guro StĂ¸rdal Journalist, cartographer and translator

In the survey it was not specified whether the answers for the Norwegian locations should be for the old or the new areas. In 2020 a lot of districts were united. It turned out that many felt a greater allegiance to the old names. This meant some sorting of data, and new knowledge about what the old areas now are named.

Dyster Farm Wins at Innovation and Sustainability

Close by the centre of Ås, a five-minute bike ride from Ås station and past Ås high school, lies the farm called “Dyster Gård”. The farm is ancient, probably more than 4000 years old. Today’s owners, Johan and Tove Bjørneby, took over the farm in 1996 as the fifth generation. The farm had already belonged to the family for almost a 100 years – since 1899. The history of the farm does not prevent the Bjørneby’s from looking for new solutions. Focus on innovation, along with an understanding of environmental-, social- and economic sustainability has made “Dyster Gård" winner of Innovation Norway’s Business Development award 2020 for agriculture in Viken. Local, Local, Local One of the reasons why Dyster Gård won the DA-award, is that they always think locally and watch the food miles closely. The meat produced at the farm, swine and bovine, is divided and packed in Ås. It is then sold privately to people visiting the 6

farm shop or who order online through their website. Some is also delivered to Meny in Ski, but as a main rule, the meat does not travel far before reaching the customer. The fodder does not travel far either. When the cattle and swine are not grazing on the grasslands or in the forest, they get locally produced fodder. The cattle mainly get grass grown at the farm, complemented by spent grain and turnip. The spent grain is a by-product from beer production at a local brewery, and a good source of protein. The local farmers provide turnips that are not considered “good enough” for the stores, but still a good source of carbohydrates. The spent grain and turnip had otherwise likely been food waste, but when Johan Bjørneby shows us the farm and explains, he denotes it as “surplus resources” instead. The concentrated fodder that the bovine and swine eat, consists of grains, rapeseeds and field beans. This is cultivated and produced in its entirety at Dyster Gård.

Focus on Natural Processes The Bjørneby family and Dyster Gård also work a lot on providing space for nature’s own processes. Among other things, they focus on Conservation Agriculture, which is a form of regenerative agriculture, involving bettering the health of the soil. Giving back resources to the earth is central within Conservation Agriculture. One way to do this is by increasing the storage of carbon in the soil. Johan has faith in the cultivation principles of Conservation Agriculture for increased carbon bonding. When they sow, they skip the ploughing and harrowing of the fields. This leaves the soil and microorganisms that live there in as much peace as they can get. Another principle is that there should be a varied growth shift: diversity and variation of plants brings balance to the soil. A third principle used at Dyster Gård is that there is to be a constant plant cover on the fields. When the wheat is not growing, other plants will be grown there instead, known

as catch crops. Not only does this prevent soil erosion, but the photosynthesis is very important for delivering carbon to the soil. If the field is green all the time, one can fully utilize the photosynthesis, as long as there is sun and above zero temperatures. Soil Health and Sustainability Improving the soil health is a vital sustainability measure. As the number of human beings in the world increases, the depletion of topsoil is a global problem that grows too, and needs to be solved quickly. Carbon bonding in itself could also be vital in the fight against climate change. There is currently a lot of research on the potential of carbon storage in agriculture – meaning “collecting” more CO2 in the soil. The Conservation Agriculture cultivation also helps in regards to the need to lessen the use of chemical substances such as fertilizers and pesticides. Contact with the Local Community And the social sustainability? A part of the Dyster field is rented to “Dysterjordet Community Supported Agriculture farm”, where members and school classes can join in on the cultivation and harvesting of vegetables. This way the local community gets an insight into the agriculture. Johan Bjørneby emphasizes that the operation of the farm must be transparent. It should be easy for people to see how the animals are treated and to know how the production is run. Both the swine and bovine are frequently visited by kindergarteners, families and others who want to visit.

“NMBU is generous when it comes to parking spaces, especially compared to other universities. This gives incentive to take your car to work in the morning.” says Kilsti Hals. According to NMBUs own report to Diku, the university has got 1535 parking spots – 92% being free. Hals points out that NMBU, with its 0.213 parking spots per student and employee, has got one of the highest numbers for all colleges and

universities in Norway. This, states Hals, is unfortunate: “When your parking space is right outside your work, of course it’s easier to choose the car.” However, he does not feel this is a good excuse. “The trip to and from work is the easiest thing to change, because routine travelling is reliable.” is his argument. Paradoxical Effort From NMBU The fact that the parking spots are scattered about makes it hard for the ones that do

not drive a car to really realize the scope, according to Kilsti Hals. “The students don’t think about it maybe because we don’t travel by car in Ås. We have a massive amount of parking spaces without needing them” he points out, and continues “There is a paradox in the way we learn about urban planning for places like Ås, and all the while, if you look out the window at Akropolis where we learn these things, you are surrounded by parking spots.” Issue 10 Year 75

TUNTREET Ineffective Area Use “The veterinary building is a huge project meant to transform the school in a way that has not been done for years. To add on a parking lot almost the size of the building itself, is ineffective use of area. Cars are the least effective transport and it needs storage space several places.” Kilsti Hals says, and adds that this type of building belongs to the past. Kilsti Hals presses that parking is necessary, since some are dependent on a car, but that it should be kept to a minimum so that the car does not stand out as the easiest and obvious choice. Kilsti Hals points out that the university that build the grand new area fit for drivers is not just any university. “We are the sustainability university, and to deserve such a title, NMBU should show that they take transport and mobility seriously. In the future the plan is to turn the transport hierarchy upside down and demote the car from its status as main form of transport. The university should join in on this.” Kilsti Hals concludes.

If you are lucky enough to have your room face the forest side of the Skogvegen buildings, you are most likely going to receive some unexpected visitors from the forest. If you are unlucky enough to live so that you face the south, you are probably woken up by construction works that are drilling long before the sun rises. I cannot relate to this, as I am facing the forest. We who live facing the tree tops are woken up by birds! Picture this: you are laying in bed and messing about in dreamland, your window is slightly open and a crispy and fresh autumnal breeze comes for a visit, you might think! Instead, some sort of tit has decided to get lost and occupy your window frame. It’s coming in. You wake up abruptly by intense flapping sounds, and spot the curious bird. The adrenaline kicks in, you jump off your bed and push your window so that it closes, albeit a bit too late. The tit is already inside

your furnished home. It angrily swoops around your airspace above your 12 square meter room. The bird has to go before it shits all over your double bed. You open the window as wide as it gets, and pray that no other birds decide to join the party. You run into the bathroom to get a towel, and when you get back to your room, the tit has gotten a bit too comfortable. The bastard is not on your desk while eating a leftover dried out piece of bread covered in cream cheese. It looks at you like a question mark. This is your chance. You whip out a towel and throw it over the plate. But the tit is too quick for you, yet again, and has already entered your bathroom. The sound of splashing water fills the room. The tit is in the toilet. This time you quickly close the toilet lid. The tit has lost. You won. You consider flushing for a second, but we don’t do that here at NMBU. You place a towel above the toilet seat, and you manage to catch the tit. Back at the window frame you slowly open the towel cage. The bird flaps around, wet and terrified, and flies off to the tree 5 meters away.

Picture this: I woke up abruptly and horrified by wild flapping sounds, and spotted the curious tit. Our eyes met, it got scared and flew back to its tree 5 meters away. This did happen, and I’ve spoken to other Skogveg inhabitants who have experienced the same, on multiple occasions. It’s nice to see nature fight back.

UKA 2020 in Retrospective I am probably not the only one with feelings of nostalgia after a month of vibrant hats, large beer glasses and endless carousal at Samfunnet. We look back at fine evenings with silent disco, concerts with Big Bang and Dagny and a sense of community that lay over us from 1. to 26. October. A Lot On Her Mind We are going to meet Fimke at hjerterommet in Urbygningen. She has a lot on her mind concerning the newly concluded UKA. With a satisfactory metre between us, she tells us – with a nostalgic tone – about the feelings that remain in her after more than a years’ worth of planning for the longest festival in Norway. A Magical Start After having dedicated her life to such an important project for a year and a half, it is strange to settle down without any specific goals in sight. We have worked constantly towards October 1st, which soon ended up meaning a lot more than just a date, and had turned into an almost magical concept. “When I looked through the room while holding my speech at the Student Premiere,

it dawned on me that we had made it,” she tells us, “even though an uncertain month was facing us, we had this day at least.” The festival ended up holding on for more than one day, with 26 whole days of action behind the scenes and many tens of happenings and events, including everything from a course in tango dancing to campfire nights to an upbeat revue and ecstatic concerts. But UKA is meeting its ways’ end, and the 26th October came quicker than expected. Bittersweet Feelings To wake up on the 27th of October was a bittersweet feeling, according to Fimke. Sweet, because it was nice to lower your shoulders and fall to sleep. At the same time, bitter, because she did not know what she was going to do now. “I haven’t really accepted the fact that UKA2020 is finished. It was almost 600 people at Samfunnet for 26 day, and it astounds and really impresses me to think about everything we managed to organize.” The bitter undertaste is blended with many unforgettable memories and experiences. It is undoubtedly many who miss the sense of camaraderie, and even though it is a bit disagreeable that the festival is over, we can appreciate its remaining legacy by remembering the camaraderie that followed the enormous driving force of the students to carry out the festival. Not A Moment of Regret Fimke points out that she has not regretted a second after becoming head of UKA. “It has on no account been a bed of roses, but every minute is worth it,” she says. “When you sit in the office until 12 at night and cry together, you get a really special attachment to each other and your work.” She later reveals that it is impossible to describe the feelings she is left with after a finished UKE (see pictures of it). It is wellknown that the social environment at Ås is excellent, but it goes beyond all expectations when you see what the students accomplish during the festival. Despite the abundance of individual backgrounds and interests, we are all a part of a team that creates its own little community – which is noticed especially during UKA. Fimke underlines

the fact that this was more evident because of the Covid-19 situation. One could see the including and compassionate student environment practically every day. What Do the Students Feel? As a part of the finishing work, the board of UKA has made a survey concerning the students opinions on the festival, which mostly looks very positive. Both contentment and infection control has been high up on the agenda, and both these factors score well amongst students. “It is rewarding to see that it was well-received, concerning all the work that has gone into infection control,” Fimke says. A well-known problem was too few tickets and a desire to move on from concert to bodega or Sløyfa. This was necessary this year because of Covid-19. In addition, the

LinTicket-problems must be solved, which is clear to everyone who has seen the revue parody. The board of UKA is aware of this challenge and the chief of marketing addressed the complaints through an apologetic press-conference on stage. One Infection Case During the same press conference, the board apologized for letting an Oslo student in. Fortunately, the routines were in place, and in a positive light this was a good test for the board of UKA to test their routines. As no students at Ås were infected, the contagion routines including the physical tripartitation of Samfunnet has been recognized as highly effective. This (with some luck) enabled UKA to make it

to the end without cancelling a single event. Joining the Board In 2022? Should one join the board in 2022? Fimke needs no time to think before she nods yes. “You get a unique possibility to influence both your own and Ås’ own student environment. Additionally, you learn incredibly much, and even though it seems challenging – everyone starts from the bottom, and you have a lot of people with earlier experience to support you.” Many pages could be filled with the advantages of filling a position in the board of UKA, but some of the most important ones are the camaraderie you get, the feeling of working towards a visible result and the larger perspective you get from realizing

how much work lies behind ordering a beer. To understand how the gears in the machine fit together is a satisfying and valuable experience to carry with you in your life. You Are the Driving Force Finally, the head of UKA wants to point out that UKA was not organized by the ones sitting behind a desk with an orange door, but by you – the one sitting beside you at the lecture (or maybe in a breakout room on zoom). “It is the students who have organized UKA, and I hope you have had a wonderful experience,” she concludes.

What is correct, however, is that Siri Fjellheim (Not the iPhone assistant, was anyone fooled?) became vice-chancellor for research and innovation in August, this year. She has a passion for teaching and conveying and made an introductory course for genetics with a goal of student active teaching. She uses clever tricks, and some force, in order to get 200 students to participate actively in group assignments. It is important that everyone contributes so that one person doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t end up doing all the work for the group.

A vice-chancellor oversees creating an overall strategy for research at NMBU. It works as a support, for those that require research tools, and those who are trying to join oversees projects. Quality in research is important, and it depends on many factors. One element is obvious, a good infrastructure, such as good laboratories and equipment. A bit less obvious is perhaps the need for a good library and access to journals so that one knows they are indeed researching. One must also consider if the questions you ask are good. Is it worth

researching what you want to research, or is only to publish articles? Research is supposed to a helpful asset for society. Thank you to Siri, who showed up and answered my limericks. She has her own research group on grass and cold, which in other words is: Overqualified to speak on flowering dandelions.

Two Beers With Johan Stener Maagaard

”Embrace the suck and push on, that’s how things turn out well.” Johan Stener Maagaard, photographer and I meet outside Aud Max, couriosly clearheaded on a Sunday. But that is how it is in this day and age devoid of parties with round two of Corona shut-down. Not just a pandemic, but rain and Ås-fog has also showed up at Samfunnet this morning, so we drop our plans of a walking interview and seek refuge in Aud Max instead. Johan Steiner has spent a lot of time in this building. He has put almost five years of being at Ås behind him, and has been committed like few others. He has had two committee-positions for UKA, vice-leader positions in the board of Samfunnet and the director for the Bodega, among other things. This spring, his adventure is over after five years of studying forestry. 18

Choosing Ås Johan Stener grew up at a grain- and potato farm in Romedal, Stange in Hedmark. This is where his interest for farming was spurred, although a little later in his upbringing. “I wasn’t so interested. to begin with. When I was little I - along with everyone else - wanted to be a football player.” At high school, he decided he wanted to study at Ås after a year in the military. “But I was unsure of what I was going to study.” He drifted between forestry and economy, but as the plan is to take over the farm one day, he chose forestry.

Off With A Bang The autumn of 2016, after a year in the military, Johan began his studies at NMBU. One can say student life started with a bang. He became second leader of Skogbruksforeninga and class delegate for MINA already the first autumn term. “Class delegate was more or less something I just took because nobody else wanted it, but it gave me insight in student politics.” In addition, he worked at the bar during UKA. “I had decided that I had to be part of something when I started at Ås.” He had heard a lot about society life in Ås from someone he knew from before.

TWO BEERS Tempted, he joined Over Rævne already his first autumn term. With a background from music at high school, the male choir was spot on. It was a busy autumn for Johan Stener, but he was not always this readily committed to things. “I have always participated somewhat, but I have tried to stay in the background. I have never been the one to raise my hand and say “yes, I can do that”.” But in the military, he had an awakening. “It was the last conversation I had with my lieutenant, who found it unfortunate that I didn’t carry more responsibilities. So, I thought I’d just have to try, though I didn't expect it to escalate quite so much.” He says it is important to get out of your comfort zone, not just when it comes to taking positions of responsibility, but in general. “It is expected that you yourself take the initiative, and that you can only trust yourself to see things through. It is the 12 cm between your ears that defines what you can manage and not manage. As a student, you are your own boss. You have to use the whip from time to time. Just embrace the suck and push on. That’s how things turn out well.” In 2017, he became a member of the

board in Hedmark Bondesliga, joined the security committee at Samfunnet and made it to the position of Chief of Committee as sales assistant for UKA 2018, a versatile position. “It ended up being a very jack of all trades position.” It consisted of everything from working on the revue stage to putting up UKA-letters on the roof. ”The best part of the position was getting to know Lars Erik, who is my very good friend today. The things we did before UKA, during UKA and after UKA..." The Labyrinthine Nature of Bureaucracy So UKA ended. “I was actually going to step down after being sales assistant, but then I thought “screw it”. He ran for election at the general assembly that autumn, and was elected as vice-leader at the Board of Samfunnet for the 20192020. He spent a lot of time at Samfunnet. “I used to go here for a few hours, then at school a few hours, and then something happened here and I had to go back, and then back to school, and back here again. And then a few hours at night as well.” A lot of paperwork and a few small, quirky work tasks. One of the big cases

was the so-called “ordensvaktsaken” which concerned a potentially extreme increase in training and costs in relation to the security committee. Johan Stener met the Department of Culture with earlier leader Ane and vice-leader Ole Golten. During spring, a police control checked that everything concerning security was done correctly. “I study forestry, and there I was, sitting with first consultant of the management section at the Eastern Police District and explaining everything from security to insurances to everything else. Things I didn’t know anything about, really, but things I had to prepare myself for. But it turned out alright, and we made it through the control.” It was enriching. “I found it to be an amusing year. You get to know the people you work with; you hang around together a lot. That’s what makes it fun really. And the whole experience of being allowed to work on all the big and small tasks you have to do. You meet a lot of people from other subjects and backgrounds, and you get a bit more responsibility than you are actually comfortable with.”

TWO BEERS Committed To the Last It did not stop with his last position at Samfunnet. He will be Leader of Hedmark Bondesliga and a director at Samfunnet until his last moments of his Masters’ degree. And he will keep the position in the faculty board, the Student Assembly, director of the Consolidation Committee and Chief of Event Committee until Christmas. And speaking of events: Johan Stener has declared himself the host of a most likely divided first place for the longest nachspiel at Ås. It started roughly half past five, before the DUS-party for the foresters at Frydenhaug. “I lived at Rævnehuset at the time, so I went there and sat outside. Then, Lars Erik came, and we sat there the whole night through and drank – I think until it was a little over one or half past one that day. That’s when I had to go to bed, because I was going to drive home as I had a driving test for the trailer-certificate the day after.” Johan Stener has been with Over Rævne in all his years here at Ås. “I was very active

at the start, but when I joined the board of Samfunnet there were regular meetings on Mondays, and it clashed a lot, so I haven’t always been able to join Monday practice.” But he has taken part in a lot of the social happenings, like choir-weekend at Trondheim during UKA. “Rævnehuset has always been open to members, så if you want some peace and quiet you need to go to the reading hall. The walls are thin, so if someone has a party downstairs it is difficult to sleep. Either you have to wear earplugs, or join the party.” At one time Rævnehuset hosted the band Staut, when they were going to perform at Linn and Ronnys tacoshow which was visiting IVARinn, and it was apparently the first time Staut had been drinking before live performance on television. “What goes on behind the scenes and not on TV are often the best parts.” There is not a lot of work to be done at Samfunnet nowadays. “We find things to do at the collective. We started with the pomona-post, a little newspaper we

are running at Eplehagen.” The project is really a few years old, sent down from generation to generation, but those in the collective are the self-proclaimed editors. Someone must take responsibility. “We also have food festivals at weekends.” What the future brings His Masters’ degree will be finished in spring, and Johan Stener is moving back to Romedal. “It will be quite a transition from living the student life here, to working and growing up. Really growing up, not just slightly grown up like when you were a student.” After theisinterview, he is actually sending his first job application for a position at Hamar. “We’ll see what we get, you can’t be too picky about the first job you get. What you get is what you get.” Anyway, an era in life ends, and a new one begins. Suddenly there will be a vacuum after all the positions of responsibility and the huge undertakings – but there is a lot of culture life in Hamar he can take part of he misses it too much.

Greetings from friends

We first met in the basement at Samfunnet after Tulleforsetillingen 2018. Back then, I did not know him, but I'd heard of a Johan that did a great job during the festival. A great guy that should run for the Board, I thought. And he did run, and he won. We became very familiar, and the strange Hedmarking became less of a stranger. He became a formidable support, comrade and friend that spring. That a girl from Oslo should fall for a farmboy from Romedal and move there after her studies was an unthought idea. Time went by, and after his awkward "no comment" in the Odelskatalog 2019, he asked me after a Rævne party "Are you my girl now?" And I was. For those of you that don't know Johan Stener - he is an amazing, sporty human that simply fixes things. A guy with fantastic dad-humor, patience and very good cooking- and cleaning skills. He is a thoroughly thoughful and supportive friend and boyfriend, someone you can trust to always be there. The fact that it's not tough, but cozy, to live together in a 12 sq flat during Corona or 2 weeks in a caddy is promising. I am very happy that we met randomly that evening in the basement at Samfunnet, and I am looking forward to more adventures and living together properly with you (Though I have heard that farmliving isn't as idillyc as on TV)! Fist-City and the Shacks Last Goodbye Born with a silver spoon and wrapped in potatoes, such is Johan. One quote goes "My life is potato". This pertains to upbringing, future, favorite vegetable, favorite drink and all his positions. You are what you eat, and Johan truly has been a versatile and positive addition to all his positions, just like the potato. In other potatorelated episodes, few might remember the time he whipped out 3L of aquavit during an after party. Anyway, it ended up as floor treatment in his own chambers. The lad has no insight into own abilities, and aspires to rather hairy goals, like Birkebeinertrippelen, Kadaverløpet and Vätteren, 300km on a bike.. This despite bad shoulders and knees. That being said, his warm-up has already started. And his willpower was proven when he finished all these. When Vâtteren was cancelled this summer, he simply took his bike and biked the same distance in less forgiving areas of Vestlandet. Johan is a firm believer that everything was better in the past, and so uses his time drinking coffee and reading Samfunnets history.

Dear Johan! Of course, we had to have an extraordinary general assembly to get an extraordinary person like you! In your candidature, you presented yourself as calm, easy to be around and having a steady head, something we all can get behind after a year with you at the Board. In addition, you have contributed with your coffee brewing skills at meetings, your swing moves, delectable dinner, heated discussions, and a lot of great hugs (minimum 7 seconds!) Your adventurous side was evident when an after party caused you to get on Solsiden in Trondheim because you rearranged all the letters in UKA, as a greeting from the Åsstudents. Though you have your strengths as a leader, you also have your weaknesses, one of which became clear in Bergen: Lemon Drop. A worthy contestant is Fernét. A Terrifying Shared House In Skogveien 18A:

We No Longer Feel Safe In Our Own Home Nora Helgeland Journalist

After a previous report from a shared house in Skogveien, a plethora of anonymous complaints were received for one of the pictures. This was about the picture of a bookcase that Hedda Jørgensen herself had placed in the common area. Some have gone far enough to compare the incident with Lila Bertheussen’s rasist statement, which is also supported, being called “brave” and contemporary art”. Last week, Hedda joined us for an interview, and has since received a lot of feedback. Why are people so angry? We decided to get to the bottom of why this incident could have so many ripple effects. How can one action lead to so much disgust, xenophobia 22 Issue 10 Year 75

and hatred for so many different people? The bookshelf was first of all used as an emergency table for the TV, but after getting a brand-new TV bench, Hedda decided to place it in the kitchen. The bookshelf has then been filled with books about food, craft and how to study. “I had too many books for my room, so I wished to share some of them with the others who live here”. One shocking detail is that the bookshelf was not produced to be placed in a common area, which one anonymous commentator revealed: “This bookshelf is Swedish and is specifically made for use in a bathroom. Anything else is perverse”. But Hedda doesn’t regret anything: “I think it was a positive initiative”. The bookshelf was

bought in Fredrikstad about a year ago, and before Hedda moved the bookshelf to the kitchen, it was used to contain hairdryers and toothbrushes. And yes, it was in a bathroom! In the hundreds of anonymous sources, two brave souls have chosen to come forth with their full names in order to comment on the incident. Amir Arfan, who doesn’t live in the share house, but often visits, wants to join in on stopping something like that happening with others and says, “That bookshelf gives me sexual vibes, and it makes me quite uncomfortable”. Emilie Giltvedt Langeland supports this by saying “The sexual energy seeps into everything I cook, since the bookshelf is

TUNTREET facing the stove. It has become a problem in my day to day life”. Both are considering messaging SiÅs about sexual harassment. Kondomeriet wants nothing to do with the bookshelf and thinks that this is some form of sadomasochism with a Christmas theme, which is incredibly distasteful. “We consider this a huge step back in the fight towards sexualising furniture”. On the other hand, we have Antoine Le’Poulitteé, a famous wine knower and art collector, who have gone out to say that he thinks Hedda can become the next big thing if she plays her cards right. “Most authors, actors and artists are left extremists. There are few right extreme theatrics, and there is little conservative art. What does exist is homoerotic, so I consider this a breath of fresh air”. He also adds that Hedda questions the art as a concept, which is considered performance art. Others have pointed out that the bookshelf has a prominent colour coding, and possible political messages is often speculated on. Hedda suggest that it is not political: “I have issues finding a link between this bookshelf and politics”. She has still managed to utter statements with idealistic tendencies: “the colour coding is because I get stressed due to clutter”. An anonymous commentator on Tuntreets homepage says that such a colour coding is propaganda. “This is a good example of radicalisation,” but which

political ideology she wishes to front is a bit unclear. It is speculated on that this could be Sami propaganda. One book with erotic histories has mysteriously disappeared since the last report, and it is speculated that Hedda has removed it. Hedda doesn’t deny this statement, “Yes, I removed it, since I had to give it back to the library”. There is also a theory that she wishes to normalise the bookshelf in order to reduce external pressure. This has caused confusion for many, as this book was not even close to be the most offensive about this choice of furniture. One of Heddas roommates, Lina Grünbeck, says that she also had no idea what Heddas motives were, and was quite surprised “It is like a roller coaster living with Hedda”. Lina utters her dissatisfaction with the bookshelf and speculates if Hedda was inspired by Laila Bertheussen. “I’m not saying it’s a new Bertheussen, Hedda IS Bertheussen”. Lina can also understand how people might consider this a personal attack, against an individual’s intelligence, and culinary skills: “placing vegan cookbooks and a book about bacon next to each other has seriously impacted my ability to sleep at night, and my self-confidence”. A self-proclaimed Christian consultant, Serin Andréassen reckons the bookshelf

can encourage devil worship, and thinks the Norwegian Church should distance themselves from Heddas actions. Hedda has also, according to anonymous sources, expressed on multiple occasions that: “I am quite interested in shamanism”. Shamanism is often connected to black magic, and there is now a fear that Hedda might become a role model for shamanism as a hobby. Andréassen comments: “A mixture of books and shamanism is not acceptable in Christianity”. It has come to our attention that other inhabitants have contributed with books, which puts an end to potential trials, or lawsuits. Follo police has commented that they have received multiple anonymous tips that there exist multiple markers, of the same kind that Laila Bertheussen had in the bookshelf. They are expecting a search warrant. Hedda has now received over 100 complaints over the bookshelf, and Follo police district has received almost ten complaints from their neighbours. An anonymous signature campaign has been started in order to get Hedda thrown out of the share house. Hedda herself has signed it, but due to an outlay with SiÅs and a previous Tuntreet edition, she is not able to move.

Student Parliament 6 was held over Zoom 09.11.2020 due to infection control. Here is a brief summary. Orientation Regarding the Health Center The deal with the Health Center has been terminated, but is up for renegotiation. The hope is that this renegotiation will be finished come springtime. A work group will be put together with the purpose to analyze what means are available and necessary in the new deal. The Student Board (AU) welcome any suggestions from the students. The Resolution “Make SiÅs More Democratic!” A resolution is a form of decision, and this one was submitted to the Student Parliament by a group of students. The writers felt that the Student Parliament should work toward making SiÅs more transparent and involving the students more in the running of the student welfare organization. They wanted a more democratic model and suggested arranging a general assembly for the student welfare organization, or some other form of annual meeting. The resolution was voted out. It was decided that AU should work toward a transparent SiÅs and focus more on what the students do here today. Leader of the Board at SiÅs informed the meeting that they will implement changes to meet the demands of transparency, for instance by putting up more information on their webpages and 24 Issue 10 Year 75

cooperate more with Tuntreet, Samfunnet and the student democracy. Decision Regarding the Long- Term Strategy 2021-2023 The Long- Term Strategy is a document with the goals the student democracy shall work towards in the next three years. It contains goals regarding environment, internationalization, student life, student democracy, study quality and the University community. Before the document was decided, an addition was made that all students shall have the opportunity to go on an exchange, that the student democracy shall become more visible and that digital instruction must not replace normal study life. Decision Regarding the Plan of Action 2021 The plan contains the cases that should be prioritized by the student democracy and AU in the coming year, and it is more thorough than the Long- Term Strategy. After the discussion at Student Parliament 5, the following additions were made to the document: That SiÅs’ role should be visible, that the democracy should work to ease the transition of the veterinary students and that it should also work to make the position of Buddy General a paid position. The notion was passed. Instructions for the Buddy General At the last Student Parliament, a set of instructions were made for the Buddy

General. This time around, the document was altered more and decided upon. The changes made concerned some wordings, as well as some more concrete tasks for the position. Among other things, it was decided that the Buddy General shall control and approve that all activites are planned according to guidelines and make sure that all students are duly informed. Decision Regarding “Student Learning Environment” This is a document regarding the student learning environment based on suggestions from the students as to what should be done to improve said environment. This case was already on the list for Student Parliament 5, but was postponed. The document was altered by a work group comprised of student representatives from each faculty. The notion was passed without significant changes, only one small re- wording. Elections and Delegations Election of the Buddy General and the Leader of the Control Committee were postponed until Constituting Student Parliament November 23rd, as there were no candidates. Four delegated to the Norwegian Student Organization (NSO) were chosen, as well as four ranked substitutes: Ina Maria Finnerud, Helene Drechsler, Martine Gjerde and Jens Bartnes became the delegates, and Stine Fjellkårstad, Mathilde Brunvoll, Magnus Dybdahl and Bjørg Øymo became the substitutes. Friday November 27th around noon, a commotion broke out in the Facebook group Ås Kommunes Venner as reports that the cygnet in Skogdammen had frozen stuck to the ice.

Venner reported that the cygnet had frozen stuck again. One passionate soul volunteered to swim out and get it, and a student at MINA offered up the faculty rubber boat to the mission.

Geomatics student Tord Kristian F. Andersen (25) casually strolled past the pond a little after ten that morning, when he was grabbed hold of by a strange woman. She told him that all autumn long, she had fed the cygnet at the same time and place, but this day something had changed. The cygnet seemed to be stuck to the ice as though frozen. As she did not have a phone on her, Tord had to call the authorities and explain the situation, while the woman contended herself with throwing bread at the cygnet. His call was transferred but Tord only met a dial tone on the other end. Luckily, the cygnet got loose on its own and Tord could hang up.

After reading about what happened, environmental physics- student Vetle Malum (23) and some friends went to the pond to see what was happening. They called some more friends, students at MINA and the veterinary school, and this paid off. At about 2 o’clock, the wildlife committee and a specialist were at it with boat and landing net, trying to capture the swan. In the end, they had enough manpower present to surround the swan and capture it. Vetle says that “the irony of this is that we heard that the cygnet has not left the pond because it gets fed here.”

happened, because on facebook there is a heated discussion about where to place the blame. Anette tells me that the swans have been brooding on the pond the last three years, and the last two years the cygnets have been run over by cars or eaten by pike. She has contacted two different swan experts to find out what to do to prevent this from happening again. One said that the fake brood island in the pond should be removed, and the other recommended fencing in the pond to stop the swans from wandering off. Anette says that the cygnet has been fed with the wrong food when Vetle points out that it has gotten two bread daily.

A great deal of the indoor social student life is put on hold. But fear not! Campfires can be lit all the way up until April 15th. The annoying mosquitos have gone into hibernation and the dark of night has returned. Although only sporadic, the starry night sky is a magnificent sight. Welcome to the most underappreciated season for outdoor life, the Winter! It’s no secret that the winter at the Agrarmetropole can be a wet one. The solution to this is the “lean-to” shelter, an old but useful invention. It’s basically a hut, except that it’s missing one of the walls. Which is practical, as you don’t have to put a door on it. Here’s your guide to a world of sloped roofs within a 10-minute bike ride from campus.

And with such a short and comfortable trip, why not spice up the hike with a theme? Every shelter is different. Here are five suggestions to how you can make something great out of something so small. Harahuken - try glamping Do you feel like you don’t get enough attention these days? Stash your bike trailer with reindeer skins, lanterns and your biggest pillows. Don’t forget matching curtains. Make the fanciest coffee you can on a campfire. Aeropress? Or maybe more creative – moss filtered cortado? The greatest advantage of this shelter is that it is in plain sight from a well-travelled trail. Make yourself at home and sip your coffee while reading a good book. Here you can glamp for the entertainment of all the Åspeople on their morning walk in the Eldor woods.

TUNTREET Kinn-huken – The ice bather If you’re one of those who just have to go for a swim on your trips, this is your shelter. Get up in the morning and leap into the muddy waters. Nowadays it’s so cold that you can’t even be bothered by the smell. They say that the risk of the poisonous cyanobacteria is greatest from June to October. On a winter trip to Kinn-huken you can utilize the season to the fullest. Årungen is in its least repulsive state between November and May. And the Instagram-hashtag #årungen is still lacking good swim photos. Are you up for the task? Brattberget – Italian evening Charming and homemade, but still a wellmade shelter, located south of Hestehagen on a mound called Brattberget. Here, you are left more to yourself, so this is the place to bring your date. This is also the only shelter with drinkable freshwater nearby. Thus, this is the ideal shelter for cooking pasta without bringing lots of water. If you carry trauma from eating canned spaghetti ala capri as camping food, you now get the chance to work on said trauma. Invite your date to an impressive Italian evening. Bring the large camping pan, colander, red wine, parmesan, and to crown it all, the red squared oilcloth. NGApahuken - suburban camping Suburban camping is a trend that has yet to strike its fame, so here you have the opportunity to be a pioneer! This shelter was part of the liquor loop of UKA 2020. Now it’s moved and upgraded with a proper roof, benches and its own campfire pan. The choir NGA announce that it is open for use on request (contact via their fb-page “Epleskrotten”). It is located in a mix of a residential area and an industrial

Wood storage: The lean- to on Frydenhaug looks mostly like a storing place for wood, but it is said that on a clear day one can see all the way to Gaustatoppen.

Smell the campfire smoke while being lulled to sleep by the sound of the railroad: the nightly wood-transport, taking the last of the country’s old woods to the cardboard factories in Sweden. Think of it as a different shelter-trip. That’s exactly what you get.

BRATTBERGET: “You get what you give” is a fitting phrase.

Frydenhaug – pure landscape-porn From the road down by Frydenhaug, it looks like a firewood storage. It is not pretty. You are not likely to sleep well on the sloped ground. The proximity and the view from this shelter made it a part of this guide anyways. With such a short walk from Sørhellinga/Akropolis, this may very well be a tempting accommodation for the students of MINA and Landscape Architecture during the exam period. Who wouldn’t like a Hundred-Acre Wood as their walk to school? As you sit there one day with your morning coffee and gaze upon it all, you might get infatuated. Smitten by the sight of an old, lush seafloor, now a wavy agricultural land. A state truly belonging to the category “You know you’re an Ås-student when …”

There has been a lot of talk about how the students are coping under Covid-19, but how are the elderly doing? Tuntreet had the chance to get an interview with the diligent “Ås Kommunes Venner” commentator and former miniUKErevue actress Åsa-Britt Johansen. We meet a smiling Åsa-Britt over zoom this sunny day in November. She sits at home in Ekornveien, right by the centre of Ås, and very close to City Hall, which ÅsaBritt appreciates a lot. She is highly socially involved and keeps up with the news and happenings in the municipality at all times. She is especially curious about the mayor: “I would have loved to read about what he is doing. Who is he as a person? These are the type of things I would like to know”. He passed over to Drøbak, so he is there, while I live here. I live with my cat Alfons. He is a tad overweight, so he isn’t able to jump on the couch anymore, but I made him a staircase, so it is alright now! Normally, I meet my friends at Ås café. We talk a bit about life, but there is little of that these days. I am not in the risk group myself. I am young and healthy, but unfortunately some of my friends are not. However, we have played some bingo over zoom. That was much fun, and I didn’t understand most of it, but laughed the whole night through anyways. But who is Åsa-Britt really? I was born and raised in Ås. Went to school, high school and all that in Ås. Then I worked in the reception in the City Hall of Ås, and then I retired 13 years ago. Since then I have become a devoted member of the Facebook group “Ås Kommunes Venner". I

was also lucky to take part in the miniUKErevue in 2018, when they needed an extra actress. So, I stepped in. I have been part of a few revues throughout the years. I always do some stand-up at Christmas parties and such. So, it was completely natural for me to act in the revue when they needed an extra actress. What motivated you to become a top commentator in the Facebook group “Ås Kommunes Venner”? It started with the fact that I am very fond of these poems. And then I take these pictures. Sometimes I also find pictures online. Then I write a poem if I feel inspired, and then I enter one of those drawing programs called “paint”. It is wonderful. You can add the photo and write in text and all that too. Think about that! The first time I posted something, I wrote about a dandelion. That was because the first dandelion had come to Ås at that time. I could not leave my computer screen for hours. So many hearts and likes and comments came along. Why do you think “Ås Kommunes Venner” has become such an important group for

TUNTREET the commnity in Ås? I have a lot of opinions, and I think it is important to express them in some way. In addition, it is sort of a digital meeting place. After all, we don’t have those proper markets to meet at like in Italy, where you have those piazzas. One also gets to hear from the students. Because suddenly you show up, and one does not meet you students out in the local community very often. What are your thoughts on all the negative talk about how the students have been handling Covid-19? I must admit that I have been a part of it myself, because I like trends. But I have been regretting it afterwards. A student wrote a really nice article in Ås newspaper, which made me realize everything the students have done to control the spread of the virus. After all, they were able to arrange a whole festival without a breakout of corona. So, I had to pull myself together, and said to myself, “Åsa-Britt, it is time for you to look deep within yourself ”. It is, after all, not just the students who should take the blame. There is a lot of coughing into the potatoes at Rema1000 as well. So, I would like to use this opportunity and apologise. I have been dumb. We are not better than ourselves on our weakest days. Well, wasn’t that pretty neat? Now I am inspired. Maybe that can become like a, what is it called…? Cover picture?

Ås municipality, the two swans. To follow them is without a doubt some epic poetry. I wish we would have one of those cameratraps placed there. I am so anxious to follow the little baby swan. What did they call it in the group Ås Kommunes Venner? I think it was something like Obi Swan Kanobi. I hope it will make it through winter. I am going there later to feed him some loaf.

What makes Ås so special to you? That would be the scent of fertilizer in May. There is something special about it. Many wirnkle their nose and dislike it. Do you have any hobbies? I have started doing frisbee golfing in my backyard, and then I started using TikTok where I upload pictures of Alfons. I really like orienteering, but then again I do have a walker so I can’t go to the forest. But I can orient myself around the streets. So I often orient myself to Pentagon and Eplehagen.

And my god, Eplehagen has become such a confusing place. I don’t understand anything! What is your favourite memory from Ås? It has to be miniUKE-revue from 2018. It was so nice! Standing in front of all these beautiful students sitting in the audience and enjoying themselves. I think there were as many as 900 people. That is hard to imagine now. To be a part of the student crowd, and to see how much they accomplish based only on volunteers, is very uplifting. There is also May 17th, which is always very nice. This year it was a bit different, but there was a group of students who sang at the City Hall. So the nicest memories from Ås are from the events that are done together. For example, lighting the Christmas tree, that one we have down! Do we say "in" or "at" Ås? Oh, we say in. You can be at Ås station, but you live in Ås. Is it Called In Or At Ås? Many people scratch their head when they try to explain where they study; do you say in or at Ås? Among the students, few actually know for sure which it is, and in the Facebook group «Ås kommunes venner» there is a large disagreement. Is it possible to get to the bottom of this bottomless question?

The use of the prepositions at or in for place names is usually something people have just decided for themselves, and they think it's weird if the other preposition is used. When it comes to Ås, people are split in the use of the words. Some people think it's possible to use both words, while others are set on one of them. It is clear that there’s a distinction between the town centre Ås and Ås municipality. The name Ås originates from Ås rectory. In 1859, the rectory was purchased by the state to become The Higher Agricultural College in Ås, later Norwegian Agricultural College (NHL), University of Environmentaland Biological Science (UMB) and today Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU). The rectory also gave its name to Ås Municipality, which at the time was a parish. After Ås train station opened up in 1879, the town eventually took form

around it. In older times, it was common to say at when referring to Ås Farm. It is usually common to use the term "at" when it comes to farms. When Ås became a town, the preposition for Ås changed from the rectory to also referencing the town centre. Since NMBU was established, more people have moved to Ås, especially the town centre. A part of the newcomers are from other parts of the country, and do not speak the traditional Ås dialect. Many lectures and professors come from an academic background, and there is a chance they have brought with them a different use of prepositions. With more inhabitants, the new inhabitants become unsure on which preposition to use for Ås. Therefore, it has become more common to say in Ås, instead of at Ås, as the place changed from a farm to a bigger town.

So, what do the students say? In our research, there is an almost even split between people who use in and at. But there are also 21% who switch between in and at, and are clearly confused. From our research, it is clear that students use mostly in when speaking about the municipality, but to a lesser degree than those who moved here or grew up here do. The preposition confusion is not new to the students. In Ås students through the century from 1964, it says already on the seventh page that it is “the student society at the higher agricultural college at Aas and Samfunnet in Ås.” This is an indication that there was a divide, and there were no clear rules regarding the prepositions for Ås. In the book, the use of prepositions varies, but it seems it was more common to use "at" back in the day. Something that may influence students to use "in" are names like “UKA in Ås”, Samfunnet in Ås, “Studentsamskipnaden

The survey received around 701 svar. 173 were Ås natives. 163 had moved here, and 365 were students.

in Ås”. These are names that students surround themselves with almost daily. When it comes to native Ås people, there are many in “Ås kommunes venner” who sticks by "at Ås". Even though the locals now consist of many new people who moved here, many people understand you use in Ås Municipality and in Ås town. Phrases like “at Ski in Ås” can occur when people live right by Ski, but still in Ås Municipality. The music video “Jeg bor på Ås”(translated “I live at Ås”) by Åsgård Superstars proves that the use of at and in switches among youth as well. They might mean Ås Municipality, the tendencies show that more youth use "in" instead of "at" about the town Ås.

According to Ingvil Nordland in the Language Council, the transition from at to in is gradual. It happens as a consequence of changes in settlement patterns, and increased mobility in the society. Changes in the society affects the language, and also names of places.

Over 62% of students answered that they lived close to campus, almost 23% live close to the city center. 7% do not live in Ås, and some live far away from Ås municipality.

TUNTREET Many will remember the rule of thumb from primary school where "in" is used about places along the coast (in Trondheim), while inland places without a coastline should have the preposition "at" (at Kongsberg). There are however always exceptions to this rule, so she thinks it worked better 50 years ago than it does today. You need to keep in mind that what was common years ago, is not necessarily common any more. In many places, the use of prepositions is wabbling, which means it is changing. Maybe in a decade we will say in Hamar and in Lillehammer instead of at? Ingvil says there are good reasons for referring to towns and large parts of the parish as at Ås. Many, also those living inside this area, say they live in Ås. But go shopping at Ås. This switch is less common among people who moved here recently and by young “natives”. Ingvil states that for a word ending with “municipality” or “town centre”, you say in Ås. That means it is in Ås Municipality and Ås town centre. Our survey concludes that most people used in when speaking of the municipality.

The survey Tuntreet conducted tells us that,surprisingly enough, students say at Ås, referring to the town, more than the locals do. Among those who grew up here, 54% used in, and 58% uses at when it comes to the town. Among students on the other hand, the use of in is down to 43%, while the switching is more prevalent among students (21%) compared to the locals (11%). We can conclude that it is optional to use either in or at, while the Language Council recommends at when talking about Ås town. Moreover, you should always use in when speaking of a municipality, meaning Ås Municipality.

It is interesting to see that more students compared to those that moved here or grew up here are using the proposition "at" correctly. That can depend on how the question is interpreted, and that varies depending on how you relate to Ås.

In the everyday life at NMBU, you’re exposed to different dialects from all over the country. But how does a true resident of Ås really speak? Which parts of the words are to be emphasized, and what endings should your words have, in order for you to blend in with the locals? Endangered The dialect of Ås can be tough to get ahold of, because just like other parts of Norway, the dialect has seen some dilution over the years. The dialectal differences are weakened as a result of relocation, and that people with different dialects influence each other. Additionally, Ås lies close to Oslo and has been affected by the “correct” manner of speech. Nonetheless, the Ås-natives carry some oddities. defined as eastern Norwegian. This means, among other things, that it is a so called low-tone dialect. Words like “Sola”(The sun) and “Boka”(The book) are pronounced starting with a low and ending on a high pitch. “Sola” is also pronounced with a retroflex flap on the L. This is something many would associate with dialects from Østfold and Trøndelag, but it is also found here in Ås. True retroflex flappers will often say words like “ælv”, “ælj” and “hælj” instead of “elv”(river), “elg”(moose) and “helg”(weekend). The L’s can sometimes even replace “rd” in words like “gård”(farm) and “hard”(hard). A word that’s almost entirely gone from the region, but was prevalent as late as 50 years ago, is “døm”(them/they). It has been pushed away by “dem”(them) and “de”(they), since “døm” seems uneducated and less proper. Some have even started

using “de” instead of “dem”, which is equally wrong in a grammatical sense, but is considered more proper. The use of diphthongs is also typical for the area surrounding Ås and Follo. Sounds like ei, au, øy, etc. Say “stein” instead of “sten”(rock) and “grein” instead of “gren”(branch), and you instantly sound more like a native of Ås. Fight the dilution Employ the peculiarities of the Ås dialect and feel free to exaggerate, to fight the dilution resulting from the relocations and the proximity to the big city. Dialects are supposed to be curious and help people understand where you are from, before you even tell them. Keep the dialect alive, regardless if it’s yours or Ås’s.

Sports Column: Hiking!

Normal sporting endeavors were not possible for the editorial staff this issue, and so we had to come up with creative solutions as to how to keep active. We ended up doing something not creative – we packed our rucksack and went for a hike.

The hike included a long break at Årungen rowing station to shoot the breeze. This is a vital part of any hike, wherever it may go – walking about is not just done for the health benefits, but also for the social benefits, making it a great activity now during the pandemic.

Hiking Around Årungen The sports column filled a small rucksack to the brim with snacks and hiked around Årungen. Årungen is the largest lake in the municipality and a roundtrip makes for a 13 km hike. The roads are good, a mixture of forest roads, gravel roads and paved roads all the way around the lake. There is a bit of traffic, so reflective wear should be considered.

Many Hikes to Choose From The one around Årungen is only one of many hiking trails in Ås. On the municipality website, as well as on a poster outside Eika, there are many other tips for short or long hiking trails.   Many of the hikes have additional trails if you wish to jog or bike a few extra kilometers. There are maps and directions, so you will not get lost.

Keep Up The Activity Level Through The Restrictions During the second wave of Corona, all organized sports and training centers had to close down, just like back in March. It follows that many now choose to sit on their backsides instead of finding alternative ways to keep the activity level up. Running and push- ups will never truly replace squats and bench pressing, but something is better than nothing. The sports column urges everyone to get out there and go hiking. Bring too much snacks, cocoa and a friend and go explore Ås. Headlamps and reflective wear could be useful now that darkness falls early in the afternoon. Happy hiking!

The Fairytale Forest by Pentagon  Translated by: Astrid Kisen

When I sit by my desk in Kringla, and stress about University and life, I look out my window at a peaceful sight; Vollskogen Forest. It is a magical place. In some areas, the trees stand together in clusters, as far as the eye can see. In other places, it opens up and the wetlands spreads out into moss covered rocks and trees. Walking in Vollskogen is like taken straight from the Norwegian folklore, and where you expect to see Nøkken in the swamp, calcified trolls, or Huldra dancing barefoot between the spruces. What fairy tales don’t include is destruction of forests and nature to build houses. This is what Vollskogen is up against now. In Vollskogen they have planned to build 200 properties, for families with children and first-time buyers. But the plans don’t mention how the 200 new inhabitants will be affected by living beside a student village, or how the students will be affected by the construction work? The construction work will come with increased traffic on the road down to Pentagon. That could potentially decrease the safety of the students daily walk to university, as 500-700 new cars a day will use this as the main road to their houses. Not only will increased traffic and decreased road safety be a reality, but unknown environmental consequences can come from a construction in Vollskogen Vollskogen is seemingly a ditched swamp forest. For a swamp forest, you imagine Shrek’s neighbourhood; a forest filled with trees, high ground water levels and damp moss covered ground. Underground you find something maybe even more interesting; potential carbon storage. Through decades, the swamp forest could have consumed and stored carbon like a sponge. Now there could potentially be large amounts of carbon stored in the ground under Vollskogen. If they then start digging up the trees, or in other ways turn the soil, they risk releasing unknown amounts of carbon into the atmosphere. To clarify, this is unknown amounts of carbon, but what’s for sure is that it will affect the living conditions at Pentagon. 46 Issue 10 Year 75

The students’ living conditions are enriched by the nature just outside their doorstep. This nature gives us the opportunity to take a break in the forest and escape the struggles of student life for a while. These moments of relaxation, is something myself and other students greatly appreciate. The outdoor facilities in Vollskogen should rather be improved, instead of made into a housing estate! I think Vollskogen should be a place people in Ås can come together, both hikers, people who enjoy the outdoors, families on a Sunday walk, and different student societies and organisations who want social events in nature. Thoughts From the Priest December is upon us, and this year, as things are running a bit differently, many have already started decorating with Christmas decorations, candles and glitter. As a matter of fact, this year we have been recommended to decorate with lights early to brighten up an otherwise cold and dark fall – we need any highlights we can get. Now we are here, December 2020, soon it is Christmas eve! But before Christmas arrives in full, it is Advent – also known as the exam period. Advent and Christmas is in no way cancelled or delayed. It will be here whether we like it or not. It is exam period at NMBU, and different levels of stress and anxiety are inhabiting the students sitting at home, more now than usual, both in the preparation and the exam hours. Are you allowing yourself time for a breather? Are you lifting your eyes to look out of the windows and into the backyards on your way to the store? This year, it has been paid more attention to the fact that there are many who feel lonely, and this will not necessarily be any better in the time of Advent and Christmas. If you have seen any of the romantic comedies that Hollywood spews out every year, you might be left with the quote “Christmas is all about family”. Maybe some of these movies can make us feel even less successful and happy? That we feel even more lonely? I am not saying that we should all stop watching these movies, which can be categorized as “light entertainment” and which might fit perfectly after a long and tiring day. But maybe we should ask ourselves the question: “What is Christmas really about?” Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus, which is the whole reason why Christianity exists. You might not label yourself a Christian or a believer, but maybe this can relieve some pressure anyways? Christmas does not need to be about the perfect family celebration. Jesus, whom we celebrate during Christmas, was one who always had time for people, and who often surrounded himself with people that were cast out from society. The disdained, those who were lonely and ill. Maybe that is what Christmas could be about? To care? To be inclusive? Surely, we can all contribute to that, each in our own way. And as student priests we wish to live by this, and we have time for you. Dear students and employees at NMBU; We are rooting for you! If you need someone to talk to or go for a walk with, we are here. Don’t be afraid to knock on our door, our door is always open. The Board Leader Column As a welfare organization, SiÅs is here to ensure a fair student welfare for every student at NMBU, a task that this year has proven more challenging than ever before. Available offers are closed for infection control and in respect to the rest of the society, in a time where the majority needs them the most. Eika was closed, to our disappointment, even after several discussions with the municipality to get them to realize the importance of the sports center. Luckily, we have an amazing sports manager who went to great lengths to provide alternative offers for the students, outdoors. We hope that this will provide some shifts in the everyday life, where shoulders are raised in exam preparation, and for some, distress.

Surely, some of us are anxious about the times we are living in. Worrying about losing loved ones, of the economy, or of not being able to go home for Christmas. If thoughts like these should appear, or if you need someone to talk to, someone to grab a cup of coffee or listen to you scream about all the hopelessness, I recommend that you pay a visit to the student life health station, located right next to the post office. You do not need an appointment or a reference, only a need for a chat.

Student Parliament Suddenly, the exam period arrived. All student parliaments this year have been held, and we look forward to the holidays in late December and a fresh start in the new year. Samfunnet and NMBU has had to close down for infection control. Employees are recommended to work from home, but it has been incredibly important for us to keep the campus open. As students, we have a need of getting out of our cramped dorms, going to lectures and reading rooms, and to meet each other in study rooms. Meanwhile, we have been working to ensure that the exams are held as safely as possible. Not everyone is able to attend physically, and it is important that we consider the needs of every single student. Thus, more or less every exam is being held digitally. The student election was a painless operation, and we had plenty of suitable male candidates, both for the faculty boards and the University board. We had a 15,6% total turnout of voters, which is high compared to other colleges and universities. 48 Issue 10 Year 75

Board at Samfunnet Hello again! At last, November is over and 2020 is approaching its end. About time, one might think. But even if 2020 has been a pretty dreary year in many ways, it has not been all bad. We have made new friends, experiences and lots of pleasant times. The great concert events may have been absent this fall, and things haven’t all gone according to plan, but we in the Board of Samfunnet are pleased with everything we have been able to carry out. So, an additional thanks to everyone who put in hours, planned, did their community services and committee shifts. You have contributed a whole lot to the student welfare this fall, and for this we are truly grateful. There’s a slower tempo in the office wing now than what we are used to. New

committee chiefs have been employed and are currently in training. The new board members are slowly but surely getting ahold of what their positions are all about, and the new year is anticipated dearly. The event block is finishing the final parts of the spring semester program, and it will be exciting to see what they have planned. Some of us have realized that it is also time to avert our eyes over to the textbooks; after all, that is why we’re really here. The exam period has arrived once again, and for some it might feel heavier than usual. For some, this is the first exam period they go through at Uni, for others it’s the eleventh. We have to keep in mind that the world does not end just because we fail an exam, and that a passing grade at Uni is equal to a 3 at high school. So, an E isn’t

necessarily all that bad. What matters is that we do our best, all things considered, but that no grade is worth the sacrifice of our mental health. And the holidays are coming, no matter what, and it will be great. So, munch on some gingerbread cookies, eat your clementines, sing Christmas songs and put up your Christmas lights. Best of luck on your exams, we can do this! Give yourself a well-deserved holiday when the exams are over, and hopefully we will all meet again at a reopened Samfunnet come January. Likevel kan vi se tilbake på en super konsert under høstens semesterkickoff, og vi er klare for å ta imot et nytt år og et nytt semester. Gents Academy fylte 9 år i november, dette ble i markert noe neddempet i år. Dog hadde vi muligheten til å arrangere en digital versjon av GF hvor året som var ble reflektert og det kommende planlagt.

Snart er det jul! Julen er en tid der mange kjenner mye på stress, ensomhet og utenforskap. Man er mye med familien, som for noen er helt gull og for andre svært vanskelig. I år blir dette kanskje forsterket siden man ikke kan møte så mange andre. Isolasjon er noe av det mest psykisk belastende mennesker kan oppleve. Mange fengsler har isolat som strengeste straffemetode. Vi har likevel nå levd i frivillig og/eller ufrivillig isolasjon det siste året og hatt minimalt kontakt med andre.
