Editorial In the third edition of Tuntreet this fall, we’ve conducted a major case on loneliness on Ås. The taboo of loneliness gets smaller and smaller. Looking at statistical examinations, the number of people who admit they are lonely have increased in recent years. Do people get more lonely? Or does the increased accept result in increased honesty? The winter depression is a well known phenomenon. The lack of daylight results in different physiological changer in the body, and gives a lowered mood. But there’s also a social aspect of this phenomenon. How do we enjoy ourselves when the sun is down and the wind is biting? You sit inside clutched to your cup of hot cocoa in front of the fireplace, watch movies with friends, fight over a game of ludo. Winter turns us more intimate. And those you only know pretty good, but who aren’t within your intimate circle, vanish when three or four close friends are invited to go watch a movie. Loneliness feels terrible throughout the year, and sadly winter increases the feeling

of being left out. A barbeque in the sun you were part of in july is forgotten when you’re not invited to bake gingerbread men. And you don’t really know anyone good enough to ask to join either, because you have to be close friends to be together when you’re so few, right? You always hear how you should talk to people who are alone, but what should you talk about? Questions about studies and where you’re from only gets you so far, and often feels kind of forced. The answer is, in proper Norwegian fashon, annoyance. Once you get started, there’s no limit on just how much you realize is annoying. The lack of lighting outside Eika at night. Doors on Samfunnet that’s impossible to properly unlock. Chef ’s knives in the dish washer. The annoyance often escalated to loathing after only a few sentences. Dare to be extra pissed of this winter, and there will be no limits on how many engaging conversations you’ll be having.

Voluntary Norway is threatened By: Espen Eikaas Syljuåsen

Last week, the government announced that they would cut all support (over the Ministry of Agriculture’s budgets) to organizations such as 4H and Norges Bygdeungdomslag. However, it is not only less support, but also more bureaucracy voluntary organizations must deal with. Today the Student Society in Ås had a meeting with the police regarding new rules about security. From 1.1.2018 we get a new system forced over our heads where everyone who has a controlling function (ID check, body search etc.) must take a full professional security training (157 hours course). Today, everybody in the Ward Committee is participating in a 25hour course, and Samfunnet has a very good reputation as a venue. Students watch each others backs – there’s no better way to avoid creating conflicts. One thing is the cost associated with 157 hours of course, another aspect is if it is at all possible to implement. How many people want to sit so many hours at the school desk, in addition to studies? And how much less trouble will it be of possibly hired guards? (Our assumption is that it will rather be more ..) A quick cost estimate shows that by having to hire security guards we get an annual cost increase of 800,000-1,000,000 kroner. For a voluntary-based student community with high maintenance needs and high investment, this is completely unreal and unnecessary amount of money. The new regulations are adapted to the challenges encountered in Oslo city center, while the rest of the country has to suffer from an unnecessarily rigorous regulatory framework. If that were not enough, it is already frustrating enough to pay a fee of 16 500, - for today’s visit control (read review of papers). One would think it was the World Cup in bureaucracy ... Fortunately for us it was a very solution-oriented police officer we met today, a good sign.We now place our trust that more community friends will support us in our cause. Perhaps Culture Manager Camilla Sæbjørnsen or newly elected parliamentary candidate and former chairman of Samfunnet Marit Knutsdatter Strand can raise the topic in relevant forums?

The new state budget - Crisis for Vitenparken Margit Fausko Journalist

33 organizations operating ideally and voluntarily within food, agriculture, animal welfare and food business lose their benefits in the state budget for 2018 as presented October 12th. Vitenparken is one of them. The communications manager of Vitenparken, Solveig Arnesen, says this about the case: ”The proposed cut in support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food of more than 3 million kroners will of course be dramatic for Vitenparken. This basic grant has been crucial to the fact that we have managed to rebuild Vitenparken till the foundation is today. These funds are triggering a large proportion of the other revenue we have, so without this support we will have to significantly reduce our activities and development plans. In addition, it is dramatic that we have not received any notice of this. It’s like the branch we’re sitting is being cut with notice no more than a 2 months in advance. It’s a whole crisis.” 4

Issue 08 Volume 72

Spire, Nature og Ungdom, Bygdeungdomslaget, OIKOS and 4H are among the 32 others who are at risk of losing their support. Solveig claims that the lack of predictability is dramatic for the whole group and that the organizations fight together to avoid the budget cut. “This is the fourth time the Høyre/FrP government is trying to cut the scheme. Each time, Venstre and KrF have won the scheme back through budget negotiations. [...] We strongly hope that they will work actively in the budget negotiations to keep the scheme, and that the government will not obtain the cut this time either.”

Portrait interview with

Andrea Loe Rønvik

Are you able to keep a cool head and at the same time joggle different cases at the same time? Then you might be the right person to take over the job as administration manager after Andrea Loe Rønvik when she’s retiring after a year as the saving angel of Samfunnet Board. There’s barely two weeks until Samfunnet’s general assembly and Andrea is well under way. Everything from moderator to medals has to be prepared and everything comes to the administration manager’s table. – The more I have become involved the better I’ve thrived. You get so much back for the time spend, says Andrea smiling. The 23 year old from Oslo was selected for the Samfunnet Board last autumn after working as responsible for the career day for the Business Board.

The job is described as being the mother or father of Samfunnet Board. Summaries has to written and personnel reminded. Employee manager, IT-manager, room booking manager, Valgnemnda and carpenter committee are all under the administration manager. But Andrea thinks that some responsibilities are funnier than others. – I’m also the one to arrange the internal parties and the Christmas party. Furthermore I have to make sure that no birthdays are forgotten, Andrea explains. She says herself that she has enough time to do the things she likes besides the work. She’s on her fourth year of industrial economy and has until recently had a part time job on top of all the other things. This has resulted in Andrea being more structured and working more effectively in the time she has. – It doesn’t depend on how much time things takes but what you get from the time

you’re spending. The time you’re spending on Samfunnet Board is definitely worth it, she says. When Andrea has to relax she goes into nature, preferably to a place without mobile reception. This summer she biked Norway lengthwise and several other trips waits during the next months. When she’s asked who should run for administration manager at the general assembly on the 30th of October she’s not in doubt. – If you want to be successful as the administration manager then you should be hard working, god at verbalization and happy to do things for others. You’ll be a part of an extremely cosy gang! All members can participate in the question time on the 17th of October and the general assemble on the 30th of October. SAMFUNNET’S GENERAL ASSEMBLY Why are so few people coming to Samfunnet’s most important event? Ole-Andreas Stigsrud Journalist

Were you not chosen as committee leader for UKA18? Did you forget, or didn’t have time to apply? Do not despair! 30th is the day for Samfunnet’s General Assembly (GF) in Aud. Max. That’s your opportunity to run for election! Twelve positions are to be filled. This is the most important event at Samfunnet each semester. Here, people are elected to the most important positions in Ås’ student environment, Samfunnets statutes are discussed and changed, and the working plan, accounting and budget for the time ahead are approved. This is an arena where all of Samfunnet’s members have the right to vote and speak, and a chance to be heard, and be an influence on Samfunnet and its future. Still, surprisingly few actually show up at GF. Fall 2016 Samfunnet had 1765 members, of whom only 283 came to GF. That’s a participation of 16%. Spring 2016 was even worse, where only 213 out of 1730 members came. That’s 12,3%. What’s up with that?

Room for more people!

Prior to the Parliament election recently, there was a lot of talk about the importance of people using their right to vote. Those chosen by the people can’t really represent the people properly if only a small part of the population actually supports them. The same goes for Samfunnet in Ås. The decisions made here matter a lot for the ordinary individual member of Samfunnet, but still we see very few caring enough to show up. Why? Does everyone have compulsory school early on Tuesdays? Is the pea soup that bad? Do people not know what the General Assembly is? Part of the problem is probably just that, people not knowing what GF means. The General Assembly is the highest form of power at Samfunnet in Ås. It could be called a bi-annual meeting for all members of Samfunnet. At the Agrarian Metropolis we are very proud of what we call the Ås-spirit. By and large this is all about how great students in Ås are at engaging and contributing. This should absolutely count for GF as well! It is close by, it’s a Monday evening at a time when little else happens, it is open for everyone and food and coffee is served. It demands so little, and it means so much, that you should indeed have a very good reason not to go to GF. Shame on you sitting back at Pentagon in your room watching Netflix! Get some friends and take the trip to Aud. Max. October 30th at 5 pm!

I had a chat with Oda Halseth the other day. She’s manager of marketing in Samfunnet’s board, and can tell about what you get out of being in one of the positions up for election. She says you get a sense of belonging with your position, a sense of responsibility and ownership, kind of like with a puppy. You also get a unique opportunity to grow as a person, and enhance your Character with capital C. It feels good to contribute to the general public. You have a large influence and get to leave important traces behind. Oda’s face really lightens up as she speaks of this. She says it’s unbelievably fun to join something larger than yourself, and learning new things about yourself and being challenged. You work with a lot of skilled people and become skilled yourself. Having been in a position like that is a really good experience to go with further in life, considering careers (hint hint, Collegium Alfa). You learn to be responsible and serious, and how to handle critic. Oda thinks it is definitely worth it because you get a lot back. Besides, free-free-list is quite a nice bonus. For those of you who don’t know, the freefree-list means everyone on that list get free access to ALL events at Samfunnet in addition to exclusive parties and other goodies. Translated by: Maren Oftebro

Life in Leaseland

and Roy-Raymonds rights Where is your deposit right now? What do you do if the sink clogs up or you find mold behind your bed? Translated by: Herman Solstad-Wiik

Kaja Mie Botnen Journalist Maren Oftebro Illustrator

New housing Meet Roy-Raymond. Roy-Raymond is moving house and is going to two different viewings this coming week. One of them is at Slye Sleaztons, whom is renting out his old barn and has no pictures in the ad. The other is at Gloria Angeles’, who only wants someone to live in the villa she is not using. Which should he choose? The viewing • Check the fuse box – is one of the circuits overworked? If you are unsure, ask the Lessor. • If heating and electrical appliances are provided, check how energy efficent it is. This is relevant if you are to cover your own electrical bill. • Moisture damage or mold (bedroom, under the sink and in the ceiling of the bathroom are good places to check) • Ceiling lights and placement of sockets – old houses may have only one in the livingroom, which could be troublesome. • Are the walls thin? • Are the windows drafty? • If there is a fireplace, ask if it is in use and whether the Lessor provides wood

Slye shows little interest in writing a tenancy agreement and sighs heavily at the mention of one. Gloria, however, contacts Roy-Raymond and wishes to sign a tenancy agreement before he even attends the viewing, to have it out of the way. However, our hero has his doubts. It is possible to be a tenant without an agreement, while still being protected by the The Tenancy Act. An agreement that fails to concider the Tenancy Act is void and will be overruled by the law. This way, you are always ensured some rights, but life with an agreement is always easier. Roy-Raymond knows that sometimes one has to prove ones living situation to the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund to get a grant, and this calls for proper documentation, like a tenancy agreement. An agreement, it seems, is neccessary. However, if he signs it before the viewing, he risks buying an alpacca he does not want (as the old saying goes). He turns down the offer and attends both viewings.

Papers in order After a successful round of viewings, Roy-Raymond decides to write an agreement with Gloria. To be able to afford the villa, he want to sublet to his friend Billy Bob. Billy Bob figures that since Roy-Raymond signs the agreement he will not need to, right? Wrong! If you rent anywhere, your name should be on an agreement. Hence, our illuminated draws up a subletting contract for Billy Bob. Ofcourse, he checks with Gloria that this is OK first. Moving day arrives, and Gloria is to meet the boys in the villa for a walkthrough with an inventory list. Unfortunately for the

10 Issue 08 Volume 72

Tenancy agreement • The agreement may be standarized or self-written, standarized is the easier and better choice. • The safety deposit is to be placed in a locked account in your name and on the Lessors expence • The safety deposit can not be more than 6 months rent • If the agreement is fixed-term, ,make sure that you can terminate within this period. If it is ongoing, you will be able to terminate at any time, but note how long the period of notice is. • The Lessor can not demand payment for anything other than rent, safety deposit, electricity and heating. • If you are supposed to cut the grass or clean the hallways, this should be in the agreement. Whether pets are allowed and other such things should also be mentioned. • If you align your rental payment with your date of income, your life gets to be a little easier. • Attend a viewing before signing anything

boys, Mrs. Angeles has over a hundred years of experience in the human business, and is nowhere to be seen when the boys let themselves in. Billy Bob rolls his eyes and pulls out his cellphone. Roy-Raymond gets what he is doing and fishes out a sheet of paper. Together, they walk through the villa taking pictures and writing down inventory, faults and lack of cleaning. They then send this to Glorias email, which she never checks because she does not know how. Nonetheless, if anything were to happen, the boys will now have proof of the condition when they moved in. They are going to do the same procedure when they move out, because they are just sickeningly structured and great.

Winter is coming Summer becomes fall and obligation lays as a blanket over campus. A cold November morning Roy-Raymond gets a text regarding the rent, which apparently is to be raised by several thousand kroner after christmas. He is seized by panic, he does not have that kind of money. What should he do? Roy-Raymond can relax, Gloria probably just forgot how long the boys has been renting from her. She can not increase the rent more than once a year after renting for a year, and even then she has to follow the Consumer Price Index. That means that even when the rent is raised, it would probably be within the economic range of a student. In doubt as to what to answer her, Roy-Raymond decides to simply not answer, and a few days later he comes home from school to find her sitting at the kitchen table. She let herself in so she could sit while waiting, and she wants to talk about the rent. Roy-Raymond is deeply and truly uncomfortable with this. Actually, she has no right to enter the villa without permission from him, because she has rented it out and hence forfeited that right. Things escalate quickly, Gloria complains that the threshold is squeaking, which it did not do before. Furthermore, there is a stain on the livingroom wall and one of the bedrooms has a ruined closet door (After Billy Bob endeavoured to learn nude riverdancing while drunk). Roy-Raymond is not a fan of Gloria snooping in his things, and so he shouts at her that she is a moth eaten old onion. Glorias mouth becomes a line, she rises and marches laboriously toward the door. When she reaches the threshold, she turns with a squeak and says «You might as well forget about getting your safety deposit back.» before dissapearing.

Tuntreet Rights • A Lessor can not enter your home uninvited. Think of them as vampires – they have to be invited in and they are blood suckers. Nah.. Well.. Nah.. (To my landlord: I do like you, please do not throw me out.) • Maintenance on the house is the Lessors responsibility, as long as whatever needs fixing is a part of the house. Pipes, walls, indoor air quality and such things that has to do with the house itself, is the Lessors area. • You are the CEO of the house. It is your responsibility to maintain everything in the house. Changing of lightbulbs, unclogging sinks and toilets and everything regarding the day to day running of the house. • In the event that you ruin or break part of the house, it is your responsibility to replace it, either on your own or with the use of the safety deposit afterwards. However, it is always best to tell your landlord about it and be prepared to take responsibility for it. This usually gets you some help from the landlord and you may avoid awkward situations.

• The safety deposit is the Lessors guar-

antee for missing rent or damages. If you do not pay your rent or did break something without fixing it, the money for this is to be taken from the deposit after you moved out. If you disagree with this decition, you may complain to the bank. Otherwise, the money can only be withdrawn if both parties agree to.complain to the bank. Otherwise, the money can only be withdrawn if both parties agree to.

Three months later, the boys have moved out of the villa and are ready for the return of their safety deposit. Roy-Raymond has already complained to the bank seen as Gloria wants the entire deposit for herself. The door Billy Bob wrecked has been replaced with an identical one before they moved out. The stain on the livingroom wall was there when they moved in, which they can prove with pictures. After they moved out, Gloria states that there are several more damages than before, but the boys have pictures from the day they moved out so that one does not work either. In the end, she has no case and the boys get their money back. Luckily for them, they read this aticle (What? But this article is about them moving in and out?) and read up on their rights before moving in!

The SPRELL-committee has arrived Ås Jon Eskild Mostue Sæther Journalist

Kari Helena Kvandal Photographer

If you during the fall see people in green condom-suits, it’s not UKA that ordered the wrong suits, but Samfunnets “new” marketing effort “SPRELL”. Most of you might automatically think about the Sprellfestival that is arranged every other year, but the committee are going to work all year to create a big hype on the parties. Committee chief Anine Marie Lersbryggen Wichstad and 6 other committee-members are from now on responsible for the marketing of the happenings at Samfunnet. The committee has gotten a few modifications since it started the fall of 2015, which you will be able to witness from now on. “We got the impression that marketing through social media, mainly Facebook, are shadowed by all the other arrangements. Through SPRELL we wish to spread the word of what’s happening by meeting people where they are.” Says the committee chief. In this occasion, we have made new costumes so that people easily can associate them to that something is happening at Samfunnet. According to Anine, their reason to making these costumes was that they should reach a bigger audience, and to inspire people to think: “Everybody can have fun at Samfunnet!” Translated by: Rebekka Bedringås

Food production on the agenda! Jardar Lindås Bringedal Journalist

Merete Guldhav Photographer

Is urban farming a good idea? Should the isolated pig become the new norm? What’s happening with the gene technology? What can we contribute with? With “Fremtidsmaten” (Future food) on Beer and politics-bodega and Naturviterne’s presentation “Korleis brødfø ein verden med befolkningsvekst og klimaendringar” (How to feed a world with population growth and climate change), the food production of the future is put on the agenda.

Siri Helle Freelance journalist and author, won Melsomprisen for her book “Handle rett” “Animal welfare goes together with weight and size. Grazing animals do a job nobody else can do, because they eat what we cannot eat. All technology is not necessarily motorized.” Elin Bergerud Earlier leader of Senterungdommen “We can’t fall into the trap and believe technology will solve all economical problems in the agriculture. We have to produce enough food and good food. How to produce it is a question of values, and everyone who eats food has a right to express what is the right type of food production. Technology comes secondary to what we aim for.”

Øystein Heggdal Agricultural engineer and agriculture journalist “Isolated pigs have no disease and produce a lot of meat.”

Birger Svihus Professor at the Faculty of Biosciences at NMBU, Agriculture- and nutrition-journalist, author of “Spiselig. En fortelling om maten og mennesket.” “Stop eating bananas, we eat almost more of them than we eat potatoes. Bananas are a lot worse from an environmental perspective. We eat way too little Norwegian- and locally produced fruit.”

14 Issue 08 Volume 72

At the bodega, six debatants and one chairman talked about the food of the future, values and use of technology. Here are some excerpts of what the debatants had to say:

Arne Bardalen Senior adviser at NIBIO “In urban farming you need to add everything, thus it becomes an unnecessary hassle.”

Anna Karlson Leader of Spire and earlier Ås student “Urban farming does not solve the problem. But it gives us a view on how much goes into producing food. It brings us closer to the food and its production. One appreciates the food more and respects it. I think people are willing to pay more for quality food.”

During the presentation “Korleis brødfø ein verden med befolkningsvekst og klimaendringar”, which was organized by Naturviterne at NMBU, nutrition researcher and engineer Birger Svihus talked about the food production of the future. Here is part of the lecture:

Indonesia, 25 million acres of rainforest have been removed to produce food, for instance palm oil. But not only rainforest has been removed to give space for food production. In Brasil, large parts of the Cerrado area, which is a savanna with relatively humid climate and a unique plant and animal life, have been taken. Seeing that population growth is inevitable, we are going to need more food and more arable land – unless the agriculture is made more efficient somehow.

The world population has doubled since 1970. We are now 7,57 billion people on the earth and this number is estimated to be 9,4 billion within 2050. More people equal a demand for more food.

Until today, food production has crossed all expectation limits. We have more food per person than earlier, despite the population growth. But we have to rush the search for a solution. 700 million people are undernourished or malnourished due to an allocation problem. Investing in new knowledge and technological revolution can help us save the food crisis of the future together.

The last 25 years, 50 million acres have been utilized for food production. Norway’s total food production needs 2 million acres. In

Three important things you can do: Reduce food waste 61% of the food thrown to waste is in our homes. That’s just pure hedonism! Several places, neither pigs nor chickens are allowed to eat or food waste, in fear of them getting sick. Don’t buy more food than you can eat! Eat more sustainably Production of animal products has to decrease. Nutritionally considered, we eat more animal products than we need. It’s better if we eat the pig- and chickenfeed ourselves, than that the animals do it. Norway has lots of barley, how about eating more of that? Plant production is much more sustainable than meat production, and it is absolutely possible to live without animal products. Although, it’s most environmentally friendly to cut out almost all animal products but not all – we need ruminants because they get energy out of grass we cannot eat. Decide on what suits you: Meatless Monday? Vegetarianism? Veganism? Open up for new technology Gene technology is part of the scientific innovation in food production, but it meets a lot of resistance in the public due to fear of technology. 1/3 of the world’s workforce is within food industry, and here are big opportunities to be more efficient in terms of robotics. Don’t be conservative, look forward!

Be part of the solution, not the problem!

Lots of challenges must be met to ensure a sustainable food production for the future. In this context, the research institute Nofima invited people to their event “Smak forskningen 2” (Taste the research) at Vitenparken on September 22nd. Nofima works to develop better, safer and more sustainable food. Sustainability was especially in focus on this event. The food served was an example of how to better utilize resources, use all parts of the animal, find new methods to produce food, and also how to find an area of use for what is now regarded as waste in the food industry.

Brownies topped with cricket meal and dried larvae. There are lots of good reasons to swap conventional meat with insects. They much more efficient in turning food into bodyweight than larger animals, they use little water, barely pollute, and breeding them demands small areas. From a health perspective insects score high, because they contain a lot of protein and other important nutrients.

For all NMBU-students who are interested in beer brewing, it is useful to know that mash can be used in baked goods, such as breads or crisp bread as shown in the picture above.

Have you got what it takes to impress the seafood industry in Norway? Do you wish to get a closer look into the seafood industry in Norway? Do you wish to network and handle challenges in an interdisciplinary environment? Maybe marine student-bootcamp is something for you. Mathilde Moe Strand Journalist

Translated by: Sigrid Trier Kjær

Student based event From August 26th to 31st this year, the Marine student-bootcamp Villfisk happened in Sunnmøre.

The event focuses on students and is directed by Sett Sjøbein, a national collaboration focusing on recruitment and competence development in the seafood industry. Nærings- og fiskeridepartementet (NFD) finances the collaboration and a total of 250 industrial participants were present. Students from various academic fields participated, and among them was NMBU-student Aslak Leinebø Seljøs, who studies real estate. Aslak was one of four contestants in the group Saba-Yaki, who triumphed in Bootcamp Villfisk. Interdisciplinary collaboration 19 students in total were chosen to participate on the event, and the challenge was to propose a way of increasing market value of herring and mackerel in Norway. Students were divided into five interdisciplinary groups, and each group was to develop a physical product, a software solution and a marketing campaign. Each group had 48 hours at their disposal, and in the end, Aslaks group Saba-Yaki was pronounced

the best idea by the judges. Their concept was to utilize Japanese ways of preparing Norwegian mackerel. The judges’ reasoning was as follows: “This year’s winners of bootcamp Villfisk have according to the judges come up with a concept that is both modern and attractive, and that will lift the reputation of Norwegian pelagic fish. The products have the potential to increase consumption, and thus market value, of pelagic fish on the Norwegian market. The products have a modern design, which appeals to young people. The judges agree on this business idea to be realistic and accomplishable.”

We want to congratulate Aslak Leinebø Seljås with the victory in Marine Student-bootcamp Villfisk and we will always encourage students to be active and take advantage of possibilities that can increase your learning as well as contribute to interdisciplinary collaboration. It is now 96,1902% certain that Aslak and his group are going to Bangkok to participate on the international Pelagic Fish Forum mid-November, to hold a presentation and meet the international fish industry. Who knows where this will lead? Unfortunately, the deadline for applying to the next bootcamp was October 8th, but if you want to check up on new application deadlines or are interested in reading more, you can stay updated at www.settsjobein.no/aktuelt or https://www.facebook.com/SettSjobein/.

nazis in Sweden 30th of September, the nazis from the so-called Nordic resistance movement (Nordiske motstandsbevegelsen) were planning to march through the centre of Gothenburg. But we stopped them! Maria Refsland Writer

20 000 anti-fascists, including Frøya Torvik and me who both study at NMBU, went to the streets against NMR. “We stood together, and broad public resistance managed to stop the nazis. Thank you to all who contributed!” sounded from the organization Motmakt who organized the Norwegian participation in the demonstration. Seeing nazis with flags, shields and “uniforms” in the streets was special. It gives me the creeps to think about what they stand for, and what their ideology has caused previously. It’s crazy to see that the police lets the nazis break ALL conditions of their march. They were not supposed to use flags, shields or “uniforms”, and they were supposed take a route that was agreed upon in advance. But they show up in full outfit, taking a different route. Still, the police does not interrupt the march, but arrests and brings in several violent nazis after a while. We who protest against them, 99,9% of us being completely calm and orderly, are chased with horses and cars at high speed. Billy clubs, shock grenade and tear gas was also used. I’m shocked. I’ve never been a “all cops are bastards” or talked about the police as pigs, but today I’ve really gotten an eye opener in terms of the police and their inadequacy, or lack of will or maybe a wish to protect all citizens from hate. They are protecting the nazis. They are using enormous amounts of resources to let them march. They let them go ahead when they break the rules, they let them utter hateful remarks and use hate symbols in the public room, which is illegal, goddamn. That’s why we’re needed. That’s why we have to protest. Let’s crush nazism and never close our every. Never look the other way. Let’s do that every single time they dare move out and about with their hate. The GREAT

Translated by: Maren Oftebro Coffee, oh great coffee. Coffee has been consumed by humans from approximately year 800 AD, Café Latte from around 1990 when it first came to Grünerløkka in Oslo (just kidding). For many, a cup of coffee is pure love, for others it is completely yucky. It is the reason for the suffering of many people, and for some their extreme prosperity. It is a career, an art, a lifestyle. And last but not the least, it can be indispensible in a hectic student life. According to a legend, an Ethiopian goat herder by the name Kaldi first discovered how energetic his goat herd became after chewing the red beans. From around year 1600 the rest of the world has tasted the same as Kaldi’s goats, and coffee is now the

world’s most traded commodity. Coffee farmers in Africa, Latin-America and Asia are the first heroes to thank when you’re sipping your black morning gold. Unfortunately most of them are exploited at the worst. Coffee was met with mixed reactions, but this is no news. In 1674, a campaign against coffee was held by women in London on the basis that men spent less time at home due to “superfluous use of the dried, impaired liquid.” In 1675, England had more than 3000 coffee houses, and when King Charles II tried to make coffee houses illegal – as he meant they were ground for formation of revolution – this resulted in large public protests. He withdrew his proposal after 11 days.

If you buy your coffee as an espresso with a dose of milk in Norway today, magic happens. You’re transformed into a “Café Latte-drinking-dotty”, preferably from the city, who does not understand a thing about how things work in this country. Café Latte is the victim of trench warfare between village and city, and tops the list of the Norwegian public’s most irritating symbolic use. So, to make it clear: Café Latte is an Italian drink with espresso combined with steamed milk, traditionally topped with skimmed milk and served in a glas. You should be given at least 2,37 deciliters, usually more. Tuntreet has sipped and tasted its way through the Agrarian Metropolis’ Café Latte offers, on behalf of Café Latte-drinking elitist immigrants and other Lattelovers. Here is our judgement:

Coffee house – coziness: Veslemøy: A bit too simple and functional for my taste. Where are all the decorative pillows? Plus points for good “heart-art” and name-art-correlation. Jardar: Light and nice. Missing some plants and background music. Unnatural natural silence, would like some calm music in the background on a café.

Coffee house – coziness: Veslemøy: Obviously a chain-café. A little too much of the secondary school vibe. Jardar: Elevator music, trying to hard with the interior, but hit beginner’s mistakes with fake plants.

Feeling after the cup (glas): Veslemøy: Nice. Longed for. First cup of the day is always the best. Jardar: Warm, cream. Lots of milk.

Feeling after the cup (cup): Jardar: Well roasted coffee, important to hide that it is slightly bad. Veslemøy: Had my virgin coffee at Waynes as a 15 year old. Caramel Frappé with a lot of sugar. Nice debut. But the coffee here is too dark roasted.

Feeling after the cup (glas): Jardar: Pure joy, I feel this coffee. Veslemøy: Quality of life. Veslemøy: Rich atmosphere, maybe because you have to be semirich to buy something here?

Feeling after the cup (glas): Veslemøy: Solid. Jardar: This is a good cup, with hints of cappuchino spices? Coffee house – coziness: Sunniva(photographer): 8/9 bar chairs. Jardar: Nicenice, calm music, lots of different and good chairs. Nice people.

«Do economy courses prepare us for challenges of the future?» A nature manager at an economy conference Text and photo: Ragnar Joakim Nese and Liv Anna Lindman

Letter to the editor

Kate Raworth, professor connected to research environments at Oxford and Cambridge, has become internationally famous after publishing her ”Dougnut Economics”. She is a distinguished spokesperson for changing the economical way of thinking, and she desires to sketch out a new economical paradigm in a way that is understandable for nature managers. She thinks we must visualise a new economical system using relatable images. Circular economy that actually is circular, an economy taking care of humans and the solidarity between them, are core values in Raworth’s ”Dougnut economy”.

Nothing in nature grows forever, and that’s how economy should work as well. After Raworth, we were given a philosophical bath from an brilliant representative from the School of Economics’s philosophical academic environment. ”What is the nonempirical that forms basis for empirical understanding and research?”. Fredrik Andersen, philosopher at School of Economics (Handelshøyskolen), thinks language and terms generally form our thoughts and understanding. An interesting , engaging lecture that reminded us of how important it is to be aware of the theoretical fundament for our go-to science. After lunch, we were ready for two great environmental economists. Professsor of Economics, Ståle Navrud, gave an introduction on how he works with putting values on natural resources, a research field and methodology that is gaining a lot popularity. Giving natural resources monetary values can help with emphasizing the ecosystem services nature provides us with, and thus lead to us taking this more into account. Arild Vatn, professor at International environment and development studies and internationally renowned within institutional economy, is of a different opinion and thinks we should work at a deeper level. He agrees with Gomez and Raworth and does not think economical theory as of today can do real

The day was finished with a debate moderated by Ebba, with both Andersen, Vatn, Ståre in the panel. Earlier research fellow at NMBU, Marit Heller, from the research council was also invited to join. The panel discussed tough questions from Ebba and the audience also had a lot on their mind.

pointed out the growth dogma today and showed us that any economical growth above BNP does not agree with sustainable management of resources.

The signatory exited the auditorium with mixed feelings about the future of economical courses. Has it all stagnated? Is there any hope of solving challenges of the future with the economical paradigm of today? Are we able to change economical theory and system in order to save the planet? One thing is for sure. Economical ways of thinking run this world, and everyone should be engaged and participate in the debate despite their background and field. Because we all have to take into consideration the fact that money rules.

We are a network for economists, students and others with economical interest with a goal of renewing and enrich economy courses by building on the diversity of economical perspectives and traditions that exists. We work for a economy education close to reality in Norway which expresses the theoretical diversity and a critical approach to all theories and academic practices. We do not with to enhance any specific theories or political standpoints, but contribute to revive the public debate around economical politics. The opposite is monism, along with dualism. Economical pluralism mirrors the idea of including a spectrum of theoretical directions within the conventional umbrella of the economy course. Advocates of pluralistic approaches to economy courses believe a dramatical limitation of the subject has taken place the last ten years, and an opening up is needed in terms of alternative ways of analysing and model reality than just the new classical methodology of today. The argument is that intellectual diversity is needed to solve the complex and multidimentional challenges in the 21st century. Students want the real world back in the classroom and experience that education creates a critical approach, discussion and lastly creates room for formation of solutions to the problems of society. The crowd was packed. Glorious tunes and ambitious sound. Increasing volume. It was a special evening when Hannkattforeningen st.1902 and Den X-Clusive Stiftelse PB performed in Cafè Klubben with their classical male choir singing. It was obvious from the start that you were in for a great musical performance. The people that showed up were musiclovers, hobby-composers and beatgeeks, an audience that usually don’t attend the other intimate-concerts that are held at Cafè Klubben. The result was a crowded and intimate audience, something that 24 Issue 08 Volume 72

without a doubt gave the optimal acoustic conditions for the choirboys. For the untrained ear, the songs that were performed might sound a bit unanimous and unarranged. But no. The performance included ambitious over-and undertones that colored the total soundscape, obviously inspired by the traditional Mongolian singing. Bold moves into unknown territories. Chords that would confuse the most experienced jazz-pianists. Modulation in its most liberated form, going both up and down at the same time. Canon with just a few milliseconds as interval. The combined choir put major chords,

minor chords, G-clefs and traditional time signatures to shame, it’s obvious that they have been inspired by the great Arnold Schönberg. It gave the crowd the chills when the choir ended the whole thing with a combined H19maj02 and X19dim3b6chord. It should be mentioned that choir was experienced, and it was observed that the choir drank their much needed potions during the show. It’s nice that it’s finally an arrangement for the real music lovers here at Ås. I’m looking forward to put on my binocle and beret and enjoy the darkest beer there is to this soundscape as soon as possible.

WALKING STICK Trend for exotic pets in Ås

Translated by: Sigrid Trier Kjær

Stine Lise Wannebo Journalist

What exactly is the perfect pet for students? When students reconsider before even taking care of a Yucca palm then it’s not easy to say how it’ll go for a roommate being able to move. We think that we’ve found the perfect solution now. Adopt a walking stick - I started with five and now I have about ninety, Ina Kristine Rykkelid laughs. She’s one of the ten students living in the legendary Heimen at Utveien and she’s living with quite a lot of pets in her room. The 23 year old from Engavågen in Nordland has earlier had hamsters, turtles, a hen and a newt, but it wasn’t until a year ago that she came up with the idea of buying walking sticks. - We wanted something else than fish at the dorm so when we heard that someone sold walking sticks in Moss we knew we should get one, Ina explains. Now the future teacher is recognized as the ”walking sticks lady” and in total she has distributed more than 120 walking sticks at different ages and lengths to students in Ås. Many have contacted her to adopt a couple of the smallest ones after seeing Ina’s post on the Facebook group ‘Kjøp/salg/bytte ved NMBU’ Cheap to own More people have seen that walking sticks both are cheap and simple to hold as pet. According to Ina all they need is a place to live, bark to walk on and green leaves to eat. The plants have to be showered with water a couple times a week and should be kept away from direct sunlight.

Øyvind Nyheim Photografer

– I give mine raspberry leaves during the summer and in the winter I put in a lemon balm that I buy at the shop for ten kroners, Ina says. Benedicte Sundli saw the post on Facebook and decided to get some. – They don’t do much but it’s funny to have someone to come home to, says the 22 year old. The walking stick has now been housetrained and lives in the living room of Benedicte’s dorm in Casino. This way the seven pets have contributed to a nice social environment in the dorm. - Ikke bare kan de holde på hemmeligheter, de kan også gjøre triks! De kan kamuflere seg som pinner, henge i lamper og sitte stille når du ber dem om det, sier Benedicte stolt. Animals as company Walking sticks is an insect that thrives best in tropic or subtropic areas. Ina and Benedicte have Vietnamese walking sticks but there is about 1500 different species worldwide. Life expectancy for this type of insect is one to two years.

Ina Kristine Rykkelid own about 90 walking sticks

I Norway there’s almost only female walking sticks. They can lay up to 3000 unfertilized eggs which each will be more females. For this reason there is more coming if more students are interested. – They are a little weird, but the small ones are very sweet. And also they are good company while reading, Ina laughs.

Breathalyser test

The live band was jumping and shouting so out of breath they could not even finish their sentences. The same goes for the audience drinking from their litre-containing glass kegs. Can you guess their blood alcohol content?

My horse is amazing

Swing: observed. Spilled beer: observed. Buttocks: many (almost) observed. Already during warmup, the dance floor in Aud. Max. was crowded to the hits of Spice Girls and Broiler. Note: the warmup to the band that started at 8 pm sharp – sensational! Any doubt about the good mood of Beerfest was removed as [name] entered the stage (also known as “Håkon Husdal’s brother’s band”). As if given inside information about how things work in Ås, they started out juicily with “Leva livet” and “Her blir’e liv” with amazing response. Girls in Octoberfest dresses with large necklines were observed at the edge of the stage, with a “Look at my horse”-style wriggling of their hips. Not many boobs observed, though, as they were mostly hidden by tall guys in lederhosen who looked as if their faces were lost in the valleys.

Finally a breathalyser!

Oh, how we’ve dreamed about this among the editorial staff. Pulled our hair wondering how we’ll finance Tuntreet’s new breathalyser. The answer was in the lineup wanting to be tested at Beerfest – all of whom paid an optional amount over 10 kroner for breathalyser test and publicity. The deal? More money = larger picture. On behalf of Tuntreet I thank you all for contributions, in addition to big breaths stroking my cheeks like the freshest breeze ever seen in the Aud. Max.-foyer. If Beerfest turns out to be as fun next year I hope I’m on the other side of the breathalyser.

Guess your blood alcohol content? What was the actual content. What people paid for their publicity.

Stormy Heights Jotunheimen 28.09.17 – 01.10.17

Translated by: Rebecca Bedringås

On the lookout for new nature-experiences, and a break from the stressful everyday-life, we, then students went on a hike to the famous Jotunheimen Thursday 28.09.17. We finally arrived Jotunheimen after spending the last 6 hours in a car. We set up our home for the next few days on the camp-spot near the Spiterstulen touristcabin. The stars watched us set up our tents, and the northern lights welcomed us to the wild and beautiful mountains. After a good night sleep (for some of us..), we woke up to a beautiful blue sky and the fresh mountain-air. This was a nice surprice, since the weather-report had told us the opposite. We ate breakfast and got ready for todays hike; Galdhøpiggen (Norway’s highest mountain), that goes over Svellnosbreen and up the backside of the normal route. We were guided by two experienced gacier guides from the Spiterstulen Bre- og Fjellføring. After a two hour hike, we arrived the glacierfront of the majestic Svellnosbreen. Some of us went for a swim in the ice-cold water while other sat down chilly and ate chocolate. With crampons on our feet and ropes around our waist we went up the glacier. Balancing along the edge of the narrow ice ridges and jumping over the deep crevasses. Two hours of excitement and fun went by in no time, and we were soon at the bottom of a long and steep mountainside. Here we met the hard wind that they had predicted, that in now way had been underestimated in any way. We had to get on our knees several times, to not get blown over. But we got to the top! And just a few meters from the top the heavy clouds dissapeared. In the stormy wind we could really feel the power of mothernature, while we stood there, at the top of Norway and scouted over the and the many mountains below us. What a view! We made our way down the normal route to Spiterstulen and to a nice dinner; Tikka masala have never tasted better.

36 Issue 08 Volume 72

The next day, the wind was even more powerful, and we could’nt go were we haf planned. Therefore we chose to hike up to Svellnosbreen. – which we definetly had’nt gotten enough of! We spent the day there climbing on the ice and wanderd around on the glacier. The rain that had been predicted luckily never came, and we were superhappy with yet another awesome day. After having taco’s for dinner we ended the night with some hardcore card games in the livingroom at Spiterstulen. On Sunday the rain came. We packed our tents before we went for a nice walk in Visdalen, where we got to see the ruins of a hunting cabin from the 1100’s. Knowing we had a long ride ahead of us, we started to drive at 1 pm, and drove to the bakery in Lom. No better way to end an awesome trip with buns from the best bakery in Norway. This became a memorable trip, we can think about for a long time - in the beautiful and flat Ås. Thanks for the trip!

Stuck between a trunk and a hard place Translated by: Herman Solstad-Wiik

As I approach the yard-tree, I see it reaching for the grey sky, like a lighthouse of lust. I see it standing there, stripped of its leaves, somewhat infected by fungi. Autumn can be merciless, but the yard-tree remains beautiful no matter what. And it was exactly what I needed right now. I have always felt a jolt of electricity through my body whenever I walk past it. Warmth in my groin, butterflies in my stomach. Now that my seasonal depression was becoming impossible to ignore, I desperately needed to focus on something else. Focus on lovemaking. I grabbed my sleeping bag, and started the climb up the trunk of the overwhelmingly beautiful tree. I was going to spend the next 24 hours up here. 24 hours in Nirvana My timing was not a coincidence. It was midday, and the sun was in the middle of the sky, shining brightly through a veil of clouds. The October air was crisp against my delicate skin, and the bark of the tree massaged my behind as I settled in on a hard, robust branch. I then started to scout. Scout for men or women, it didn’t really make any difference at this point. I was high on lust, and in no position to be picky. I spotted a potential partner on the ground below me. She had rolls in her hair, was dressed in a fluffy bubble jacket, and rocked a pair of bright green crocs. She marched like a proud rooster across the yard. I felt my needs now stronger than Photo: Inga Elen Årvoll Eidsvik

ever before. I was mesmerized.I roared in her direction like a wild eastern European athlete. The sound of my voice could be heard all over campus like a rusty old foghorn. She turned, and started to climb the tree. Approaching me quickly with obvious lust in her eyes. We explored each other’s bodies with relentless desire. The masses of students on their way home from their lectures, were easily ignored. After a few minutes of passion, I invited her sensually into my sleeping bag. The nymph slipped into the bag with the grace of a newborn calf. I moaned, and tied the sleeping bag to one of the branches close to me. It now had the appearance of a meaty blue cocoon, purring and inviting me to come inside. “One second”, I laughed softly, reaching deep inside my backpack to find what I was looking for. I pulled out my knife. It gleamed in the sharp sunlight. I looked around for a moment to find the perfect place in the tree, before penetrating my knife deep into its trunk. I groaned, while sweat poured down my forehead. It was only moments before I had created a gorge in the wood deep enough to fill itself up with delicious sticky resin. I put my hand inside, and the gorgeous gold liquid was like a glove on my hand almost instantly. I had to swallow my spit in excitement. I turned towards the cocoon. “Is there room for one more?”

“What took you so long?” she replied impatiently. “You’ll see” I replied while removing her bubble jacket. She giggled. “Leave them in!” I demanded when she wanted to remove the rolls in her hair. They were as similar to pine cones as anything could be, and the thought of that lit a fire inside of me. The bubble jacket was at last removed, and I could see the silhouette of her breasts in the dim light inside the cocoon. With my left hand, I massaged, juggled and played with her breasts until she sighed and whispered, “Give me more” into my ear. My right hand went directly for her left breast, and started to massage it in with the golden resin from the tree. “What on earth are you doing?” She yelled while jumping out of the cocoon, screaming and running away across the yard. Hugely disappointed, I sat alone in the tree, wondering how long it would be before someone else would come along. My body was stiff with desire and excitement, and I could feel my own wood pulsating in my jeans. I looked swiftly around at the tree I was in, and realized the gorge I had made in the trunk was still dripping with resin. I couldn’t contain my smile. I counted the graining, just to make sure I wasn’t about to do something illegal. The fly of my pants practically sang with joy when I pulled it down, before I became one with the majestic creature. Tuntreet revue

Well filled toolbox Broderskapet Unity does not invent gunpowder with their revue, but they serve the audience a short hour of humor, self-irony, much flexing and small stings in all directions. From the perspective of a student association revue-genre, the theme is recognizable: appear as a tough version of yourself. It’s either “go rough”, show them the finger or in Unity’s case, load the nail gun. This time, Unity’s has borrowed the keys to daddy’s toolshed, and show themselves as quite the handymen. During the prologue, Magnum Opum-bottles are naturally braided in between hammering and sawing. Following this, a classic Unity sketch: dancing in tennis socks with homemade ping pong-rackets. They went high and low, and even upgraded the number with some cheerleading lifting. The “crazy Unity-life” The revue was done without any live music, which is somewhat disappointing, but understandable considering it excluded another factor of uncertainty. Luckily, there was more than just playback: the Vazelina-parody included both guitarplaying and singing! If you closed your eyes the relation to earlier vocalist Viggo Sandvik was not too far off. Some of the other song numbers weren’t exactly spotless and the timing was slightly off, but passion is definitely not lacking. Several creative song choices, for instance Ricky Martins “Livin la vida loca”, diminish the lack of a live band.

Kristian Haraldsen Photographer

Jon Eskild Mostue Sæther Journalist

Translated by: Maren Oftebro All in all, the sketches are well written and some even bring surprises. Especially where Sylvi Listhaug’s immigration regime is turned into a scene in the unforgettable Swedish version of “American Gladiators”. It is also proven that the “most important cases of the week” still function as a way of bringing out the hard-hitting points. Original? No, but still fun! The videosketch “#Hvaerdet?” (#Whatisit?) is another good attempt at normalizing parts of the “Unity lifestyle”.

Tuntreet REvue

Solid The revue sheds light on dynamics and hierarchy of the student association life, at least seen from Unity’s perspective. Their relationship with Feminin & Fornem is important to nurse, and several songs and sketches are dedicated to these ladies. Stage experience among the actors is deficient, which shows in the stiff and well-drilled lines, but it is in no way embarrassing for the audience. Still, fun to observe how some just takes the stage naturally. Especially Tord Hauge stands out, carrying many of the sketches on his back like an overenthusiastic choir conductor, car dismantler or gladiator show speaker!

At the end you’re left with the feeling of being entertained throughout pretty much the entire revue. 50 minutes and few prolonged sketches keep the audience’s concentration and willingness to stay. A nice mixture of sharp lines, dancing numbers, video sketches and audience proposals gives Unity a good reason to celebrate themselves throughout the late hours!

TA B U Loneliness

Gunnar Haarr Journalist

There has been a increasing rise in awareness around mental health issues the last 4-5 years, and in a Norwegian context this has especially been centred on students. The “students health and wellbeing survey” undertaken in 2014 revealed a worrying trend about students’ mental health. I this issue we turn the focus to the most common mental health issue: loneliness. We have conducted a survey, which was published via employees at NMBU as well as Facebook. 663 people responded to the survey, and below is a summary of the results.

Submitted thoughts on loneliness - It is in the presence of many others that you feel most alone. To feel left out of a group project is one of the worst experiences, yet very common.

- I often feel lonely in the breaks between lectures. Once the clock strikes the hour and people turn around in their seats to chat to each other, some leave the lecture room to buy coffee, some go to chat to the lecturer. Sometimes I go to the toilet and look through my phone there. Or I engross myself in my laptop and pretend to be concentrating on something. All this just to appear busy, instead of lacking a friend to talk to.

- I can go many days without saying a word to anyone.

- Student societies can feel excluding.

- Once the “cliques” have been formed it is very difficult to be included if you weren’t a part of that group from the beginning of your studies.

- Parties are always the same ritual: I enter Samfunnet, I say hi to everyone I know, I lose everyone I came with – I find them again – I feel judged by people because I’m walking around alone and looking for my friends – I go home early. Everyone else that I see look like they’re having a great time. Maybe it’s me there is something wrong with.

- Everyone is lonely at times, but no one should feel lonely all the time.

- I know how nice it is to feel included, so I try to include people as much as possible. It can be as simple as asking a new study group member if they would like to have lunch with you. It can turn into a new friendship and make it a little less lonely in this world.

- NMBU is a nice and social place to study, but I do think that getting involved in a student society, voluntary work or Samfunnet/UKA is important to feel included. I need to do that next time I have the opportunity. 42 Issue 08 Volume 72

- It is important to distinguish between being alone and feeling lonely. Not all loneliness is negative. It is better to wake up alone and know that you are lonely than to wake up with someone and feel lonely.

Health center Social-meetups organised by Mental Health Youth Ås The student priest Organised and non-organised social life

Not surprised Anne Bentzrød at the ‘health center for youth and students’, also known as ‘auntie klamydia’, says that she is familiar with these statistics. “My experience is that the statistics correspond with reality. Many feel lonely and struggle to figure out the social aspects of university.” She is often the first point of call for students who wish to speak to someone at the health center. Since then SiT, the Rector, Mental Health Youth Ås, and the health center in partnership with SiÅs focused on the problem.

Councelling has been made more readily available for students, and ”Waffel Thursday” organised by SiT as a social point of call, as well as Mental Health Youth Ås which was created 2 years ago, has received significantly more attention on Facebook as well as attendees to their events organised every Sunday. World Mental Health Day World Mental Health Day has received more media attention in recent years. This year, postboxes have been placed around campus and students have been encouraged to write little letters about their daily joys or something that makes them happy. The hashtag #myhappiness (#minglede) and

Tuntreet

#myhappinessNMBU (#mingledeNMBU) have been used to promote the effort in social media, and Studentsamfunnet has arranged a presentation by Adil Khan in conjunction with World Mental Health Day. «Generation performance» The Rector says she is aware of the challenges surrounding loneliness amongst the student population at NMBU. Loneliness is a feeling, not just a state of being. Many students take part in many activities and are surrounding by friends during the day, but still feel lonely, she contends. ”Generation performance” is an expression that appears. Young people these days like their parents generation better than they like themselves. Previously students hated their parents and rebelled. There is no doubt that this is a matter that has been reflected about at Circus. Over half of young girls in middle school say that stress levels are so high that it affects their quality of life, and 25% experience symptoms of depression. These are worrying statistics and tell a sad story of how youth grow up and come to understand themselves, which can be difficult when trying to find ones place in an intense student environment like at Ås. But the situation at Ås is not unique, and the situation is equally problematic at other institutions and in society in general. Some of the efforts to battle student loneliness that were named in the discussion are the social events and societies, and training in understanding own feelings at home. It is possible to help students, and help them to help themselves, beyond the purely professional servies. Her blog post entitled What makes you happy? published in relation to World Mental Health Day is undoubtedly the most commented post she has posted to date. We would like to highly reccomend that studens read this post. What can be done? The recurring advice is that we have a duty to take care of each other: say hi, make more time for each other and ask how your friends are doing. Often the people battling loneliness just need someone to talk to, and students themselves can do a lot to improve the situation. Based on the responses, loneliness is something that we can all relate to. If we can all make an effort to be more observant and aware of the people around us, I am sure we can achieve a lot in terms of creating a more inclusive and warm student environment. MURDER MYSTERY RIDDLE A murder has been committed in Kajaveien. The main suspect is a man named Kurt Skurk. The victim had been walking along the road when he was suddenly shot in the stomach. The suspect had red hair, green eyes and wore a Fjellreven jacket just like Kurt Skurk’s. Kurt was asked to tell the story right from the beginning. “Well,” said Kurt, “I was just walking home from school when I saw this man walking along the road. Suddenly, a guy came up from behind him and shot him! I ran home as fast as I could.” The policemen asked him to give a description of the murderer. “He had a brown mustache, brown hair and a Fjellreven jacket on.” “I think this man is telling a lie,” said one of the policemen. How did he know?

Jam Sessions that Click! Albert Akoury Journalist

Ingrid Nerdrebø Photographer

Every two weeks on Thursday nights, Click bar in As will be hosting an improvised musical jam session. The event features NMBU students as well as local artists and everybody is welcome to come and perform or simply enjoy some live music. Here is what I experienced.

Whatever took you to the event, there was definitely a welcoming vibe in which you were invited to explore, meet new people, or sit back and enjoy a cold beer.

Beginning at 8pm, guests slowly entered the room to the sound of musicians tuning their instruments and warming up. In the basement, some friends gathered around a pool table, some, myself included, competed over a game of darts, others mingled and seemed heavily immersed in deep conversation.

As the night progressed the music raged on. People poured into the bar and a makeshift dance floor slowly formed. However, not all of the guests felt satisfied by the ambiance.

46 Issue 08 Volume 72

Soon enough, a group of four performers began to experiment and share one another’s playing styles. Before you knew it, the dark, sleepy basement bar blossomed into an energetic blend of musical diversity with a sort of new-folk feel accented by the distinguishable undertone of the fiddle.

Salima was surprised to see where most guests directed their energy: “People are more focused on private conversation and

simply clap at the end. You should be focused on the music; you should respect it.” Wasse, a performing guitarist, wished the event would be MC’d. A more structured event would allow solo artists such as himself a space to express their individual styles. He suggests that perhaps a better way to run the event might be to allocate a certain amount of time for each artist or group of artists and have them rotate onto the stage. Although there certainly is room for improvement, overall I’d say my night at Click was a nice change of pace. Towards the end of the school week on Thursday nights, I often find myself in need of a break from the books and the homework. Click’s open mic event offers just that: a refreshing atmosphere to kick back, share some laughs, and let the music take over.

Men frykt ei.

From the Student Democracy Will we finally get a student commission at NMBU? NMBU is now in a process of getting a student commission at the university. There are currently no national guidelines on whether or not a university should have a student commission. Several institutions have such a body in place, some of them are NTNU, UiA, UiS, UiT and UiO. A student commission will be able to act as a sparring partner with legal expertise in different challenges and issues for students at NMBU, and it shall have an overview of our rights and duties. Digital exam within spring 2018 NMBU tested out digital exam in some subjects last semester. The study administration is continuously working on mapping challenges and possible digital solutions on the exam. NMBU’s goal is that as many exams as possible will be digital by spring 2018. This case will be discussed at Studentting 5, October 16th at 17.15 on TF, Wing III. All students registered for the semester have the right to speech and rise proposals.

Educational merit, greater focus on teaching quality As part of the Rector’s focus on Outstanding Research and Education 2015-2019, a project has been launched to develop a merit system for teaching methods at NMBU. This means that teaching and teaching quality will gain a greater focus at the university. The Student Democracy will submit a consultation response to the proposal for educational merit by 26.10.17. Train departures One of the points on student democracy’s long-term strategy is train access at Ås. The Student Democracy wishes two departures per hour from Ås station. The Minister of Transport guaranteed in Fredrikstad Blad 26.08.2017 that Fredrikstad (south-east of Ås) will get more departures per hour from 2024. He also confirms that this will be done in accordance with the National Transport Plan, and that the conservatives will fulfil this promise.
