IDEAS • Book covers representing modern day headlines and events; such as 9/11, 7/7 bombings, Iraq war, UK Elections, First black president. • Inspirational quotes from evil figures in history; Adolf Hitler, Atilla the Hun, Kim Jong il. • Graphics showing similarities and differences between world languages in specific, singular words and common phrases. • Magazine articles and headlines for everyday, mundane tasks; parody articles and images for example: woman puts on cardigan, rain falls from sky. (mocks over exaggeration of celebrity lives in modern day society) • Awareness Campaign shining light on past and present diseases, illnesses and incidents in the world through visual means; ideas include Ebola in 2014, The Black Plague, Fighting in Syria, ISIS.

BOOK COVERS Books are a conversation between reader and writer, they allow a writer to showcase their creative ideas and represent their imagination through literacy. These written ideas form a medium in which a reader can connect and interpret in their own way. These created dialogues can also convey personal emotion and feeling making each book a different experience for the one’s taking part. The idea of having notable events which have happened in the modern era on the book covers is attached to the quote ‘You can never judge a book by it’s cover’ re-enforcing the fact that people have different opinions and experiences of those events, wether it be good or bad, and having a visual reminder of such event triggers their own personal feelings. They also have the opportunity of writing their thoughts and thus creating their own novel. events to look at: 9/11: The effect the disaster had/has on people Social media (Facebook and Youtube): How it began, and now how it runs people’s lives First African-American president 2008 Olympics: China finally recognised as a global power

LANGUAGES With ~6,500 spoken languages in the world, the variation and diversity of a single conversation can be an amazing experience. Using certain methods, listing these languages and comparing their similarities and differences, and also turning them into a more visual piece could generate a unique solution. Some starting points are creating imagery with typography, documenting these similarities and using them to create a new-world language, and also creating fonts relative to different parts of the world. AWARENESS CAMPAIGN Awareness Campaigns are introductions to a service, person or program often fighting for some cause. Awareness Campaigns are produced to create an emotional reaction from it’s audience and for them to grow an affiliation with the specific reasoning that can be recalled when needed. In the modern day, Awareness Campaigns need to have a natural integration with society, through various mediums; be easy to access incase more information is needed and also has to present, up-to date and not in need of various recalls.More common awareness campaigns come around either yearly or stay all year-long; some include Breast Cancer awareness, Mental health week, AIDS and HIV awareness and also testicular and prostate cancer research. World AIDS Day is on the 1st December, and allow people worldwide to unite and support people living with HIV and AIDS and also to commemorate those who have died. WAD was the first ever global health day. The national aids trust use red ribbons, along with fact pages, quizzes and other media as a means to make more people aware of themselves and also the AIDS virus. Cancer Research UK lists useful information, facts about breast cancer on their website along with advice and also support pages. Others like to display posters and hand out leaflets/stickers with memorable info for people to keep.

IGNORANCE As a general theme throughout all my ideas, i’ll be looking at the ignorance of western society when in relevence to current world affairs and events. The media displays repetitive, sometimes false, bad news which is there to capture attention and scaremonger and in 2014; with considerable bad press in past years, the public now either ignore, avoid or don’t have the time to sift through pages and pages of generic stories. In my own and recent generations the general population are uneducated and desensitised to tragedy spreading through the world on a day to day basis. People are becoming more selfminded, worrying about themselves and believing their problems are the only that affects them. Although this way of thinking is not a problem; you should understand and be able to take responsibility on actions happening in your and those personal to you lives; they’re is upsettingly bigger problems which could be affecting you more directly than you care to think. I’ll be asking for people’s opinions on the events i research and asking wether or not they know what it is, why it happened and how it does/will affect them. When the events took place will varie to show how up-to-date their knowledge is on the world. I believe the only way to re-capture people’s attention and to persuade them to become more knowledgeble on the world they live in, is to have a more physical, direct approach to generating awareness. This can be achieved in numerous ways, and hopefully visually for my final solution; but either marking people ignorant or creating easier to access, connect with and understand media.

COVER IMAGES a book cover usually protects and binds together the pages of a book, the arts and crafts movement caused an influx of book cover design, traditionally and even still these designs hint at the style, genre and subject of the book but, as with any visual piece, they are designed to excite and interest the reader, and also to generate an emotional response. developing on the response, i want readers to view these depictions of modern day tradegies and events to bring up past(or current) feelings about that particular time, for them to then communicate and share them feelings to other people, which in turn starts a conversation, and also even write their emotions down on the pages of the book itself.

LANGUAGES Mandarin is a group of related varieties of Chinese spoken across most of northern and southwestern China. When the Mandarin group is taken as one language, as is often done in academic literature, it has more native speakers (nearly a billion) than any other language. Spanish is a Romance language that originated in the Castile region of Spain. Approximately 470 million people speak Spanish as a native language, making it second only to Mandarin in terms of its number of native speakers worldwide. English is a West Germanic language that was first spoken in early medieval England and is now a global lingua franca.[4][5] It is the third-most-common native language in the world, after Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. Hindi is a standardised register of the Hindustani language. Hindustani is the native language of most people living in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, and more. Modern Standard Hindi is one of the official languages of India. Russian is an East Slavic language and an official language in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. Russian belongs to the family of Indo-European languages and is one of the three living members of the East Slavic languages. Written examples of Old East Slavonic are attested from the 10th century onwards.

9/11 ATTACKS the 9/11 bombings were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks launched by al-Qaeda upon the United States in New York City and the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. Four passenger airliners were hijacked by 19 al-Qaeda terrorists so they could be flown into buildings in suicide attacks. Two of those planes were crashed into the North and South towers, respectively, of the World Trade Center complex in New York City. A third plane, American Airlines Flight 77, was crashed into the Pentagon, leading to a partial collapse in its western side. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was targeted at Washington, D.C. but crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after its passengers tried to overcome the hijackers. In total, almost 3,000 people died in the attacks, including the 227 civilians and 19 hijackers aboard the four planes. It also was the deadliest incident for firefighters and for law enforcement officers in the history of the United States, with 343 and 72 killed respectively. due to pure evil, people’s relationships were torn apart with fathers, mothers, daughters, sons etc. tragically dying in such an horrific event. as it stands today; the 9/11 bombings are one of the most famous and well-known terrorist attacks, and with that title causes millions upon millions of stories, feelings and emotions attached to the date.

9/11 ATTACKS opinions.
I asked numerous people from different backgrounds and places; ‘What is your opinion on the 9/11 attacks?’ I gave them no other questions or provocatives, as i’ve learned in my life people will captalise, even if wrongly, on other people’s help as much as possible. All asked were able to distinguish that the attacks were some form of terrorism, and their emotions varied from deeply moved, angry and distraught to sad and shocked. Some also displayed knowledge on how the attacks actually happened, saying that two planes crashed into the world trade towers, and also one mentioned the other plane crashing into the pentagon; others wrongly described the events and also accused several different perpetrators which were not al-Qaeda. One volunteer listed they had researched 9/11 before in particular conspiracy theories, but most are reminded annually when society remembers those who fell victim to the awful act of terror. As a conclusion and general overview at the opinions recieved there was no sign of ignorance towards the event, but in my argument, 9/11 happened 13years ago; the world relives the day every year and in that time if a person didn’t know anything about what happened, it would be bordering on idiocy rather than being ignorant. Even so when asked to conjure an opinion on the attacks, most struggled to think, hoped for a more precise question to work from and gave only brief, small details.

PRESIDENT OBAMA Barack Obama announced his candidacy for the presidency of the United States in Springfield, Illinois, on February 10, 2007. On August 27, 2008, he was declared nominee of the Democratic Party for the 2008 presidential election. He was the first African American in history to be nominated on a major party ticket. On November 4, 2008, Obama won the election, making him the President-elect and the first African American elected President of the United States. He is the third sitting Senator, after Warren G. Harding and John F. Kennedy, to be elected President. The Headquarters of Obama’s campaign was in his home town of Chicago, Illinois. He took office in the middle of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, at a time when our economy was losing 800,000 jobs a month. He acted immediately to get our economy back on track. Today, the private sector has added back more than 5 million jobs. He’s fought for equal rights and a woman’s right to make her own health decisions. And he’s made a college education more affordable for millions of students and their families. his campaign has affected a lot of different people, from various backgrounds and classes, and all will have a personal opinion on what they thought about the first african-american president being elected into presidency.

I asked numerous people from different backgrounds and places; ‘What is your opinion on Barrack Obama and his 2008 Presidential Campaign?’ I gave them no other questions or provocatives, as i’ve learned in my life people will captalise, even if wrongly, on other people as much as possible. As a basis all knew of Barrack Obama but no campaign details. They said he was an influential figure and a strong leader, who had masses of support from African-Americans. Most stated that him becoming president was a major act of change and a big step forward in the fight of racial equality. No-one really said how him becoming president affected them nor’ how it still does; only a few said that him becoming the leader of a very powerful country can affect them in the future. As a conclusion and general overview at the opinions recieved most were unknowledgeable about the events which led up to Obama being elected. Seeing as this was an American presidential election and not directly affecting the UK you could’ve guessed there would be no substational information of the campaign given in their opinions; but if people could have taken forward Obama’s messages and ideas which let him acheive his dream, they might have seen things a little differently since 2008.

ISIS Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS} is an unrecognized Sunni jihadist state in Iraq and Syria in the Middle East. The group originated as Jama’at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad in 1999. This group was the forerunner of al-Qaeda in Iraq. It took part in the Iraqi insurgency against American-led forces and their Iraqi allies following the 2003 invasion of Iraq. At its height, it enjoyed a significant presence in Al Anbar, Nineveh, Kirkuk, and other areas, but around 2008 its violent methods led to a backlash against it and temporary decline. In April 2013, the group changed its name to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. After entering the Syrian Civil War, it established a large presence in the Syrian governorates of Ar-Raqqah, Idlib, Deir ez-Zor, and Aleppo. In June 2014, it had at least 4,000 fighters in its ranks in Iraq, and the CIA estimated in September 2014 that it had 20,000–31,500 fighters in Iraq and Syria. It had close links to al-Qaeda until February 2014 when, after an eight-month power struggle, al-Qaeda cut all ties with the group, reportedly for its brutality and “notorious intractability” ISIS are notorious for abusing various human rights, this includes committing mass atrocities and war crimes, religious persecution and ethnic cleansing, executing civilians, sexual violence and slavery. More known are those publicised in the media especially stories of beheading hostages captured at the Syria border.

ISIS opinions.
I asked numerous people from different backgrounds and places; ‘What is your opinion on the 9/11 attacks?’ I gave them no other questions or provocatives, as i’ve learned in my life people will captalise, even if wrongly, on other people’s help as much as possible. All asked were able to distinguish ISIS as an Islamic extremist collection and the group behind beheading several western journalists and reporters over in Syria. Although this is correct, ISIS should be known and responsible for all their acts which is currently tearing through Iraq and Syria alike. Popular emotions included disgust, distress, anger and sadness, whilst a minority also stated they were scared and prepared for a world war. No persons gave any details on any other events commited by ISIS and none were able to make sense on why they were doing it, and why the west are not doing much in terms of retaliation. As a conclusion and general overview at the opinions recieved, i would say as a populous we seem to be only distressed and opinionated on facts we have been given, meaning that unless you have researched ISIS’s wrong doings, you would have a very basic understanding of what they are actually doing, as supported by my findings. A person shouldn’t be aquired to read up on the disgusting and gruesome facts behind ISIS, but as i’ve seen recently, sparking up debates on social media with no sensible argument, points or knowledge and also criticising them with no substantials, is not only an act of idiocy but i believe also disrespectful and insensitive on those who have fell victim. In no way do i support what ISIS do, but the west retaliating because of a few deaths of their own citizens, and not because ISIS have killed the innonect public, held hostages, destroyed military bases and the rest, is very self-centered and ignorant.

EBOLA Ebola haemorrhagic fever (EVD) is an infectious, severe and often fatal disease, the average EVD case fatality rate is around 50% but has been close to 90% in past outbreaks. At this time there are no licensed treatments or vaccines, people outside of Africa the virus remains a low threat due to hospital standards and procedures. EVD first appeared in 1976 in 2 simultaneous outbreaks, one in Nzara, Sudan, and the other in Yambuku, Democratic Republic of Congo. The latter occurred in a village near the Ebola River, from which the disease takes its name. Symptoms start between 2 and 21 days after becoming infected. The virus causes the host impaired liver and kidney function, stomach pain, vomiting and also diarrhea. Following these the patient then bleeds internally and also known to bleed from the ears, eyes, nose or mouth. It’s a very painful experience and more than often sufferers don’t survive, but the sooner a person is given care, the better chances that they will survive. It is thought that fruit bats of the Pteropodidae family are natural Ebola virus hosts. Ebola is introduced into the human population through close contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected animals such as chimpanzees, gorillas, fruit bats, monkeys, forest antelope and porcupines found ill or dead or in the rainforest. Ebola then spreads through human-tohuman transmission via direct contact with the blood secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected people, and also with contaminated surfaces and materials. Health-care workers have frequently been infected while treating patients, this has occurred through close contact and when infection control precautions are not strictly practiced; this is even more frequent in Africa because of poor medical conditions. People remain infectious as long as their blood and body fluids, including semen and breast milk, contain the virus. Men who have recovered from the disease can still transmit the virus through their semen for up to 7 weeks after recovery from illness.

I asked numerous people from different backgrounds and places; ‘What is your opinion onthe current Ebola pandemic?’ I gave them no other questions or provocatives, as i’ve learned in my life people will captalise, even if wrongly, on other people’s help as much as possible. A small percentage of those asked correctly distinguished Ebola as a virus and that it is transmitted through human-to-human contact. Few were unaware to where it started and how it started, and others were quick to announce that it resulted in death. Only one person talked about hwow it could be treated, and that there is no fundamental cure. Their emotions and feelings were generally distant, a minority shared their grievances for those affected, but most stated that it doesn’t directly affect them, and that 1 person having it in the UK isn’t a major worry. As a conclusion and general overview at the opinions recieved there was a certain sign of ignorance towards the current outbreak. This is a fatal virus which is contracted through humanto-human interaction, it’s becoming the fastest transmitted virus pandemic to date and over 4,000 have died as of Oct 2014. No persons questioned were able to recall this information to hand, which i believe is more worrying than contracting the actual virus; it shows how unaware and de-sensitised our generation/ society actual is; current tradegy is being overlooked when it could be affecting their lives more than they think. What interests me though is that the first words spoken or written was of its fatalness. Presuming the only resource of Ebola they are in contact with is through News and media alike, it shows the scaremongering tactics they use to increase viewer ratings etc.

THE BLACK DEATH The Black Death was one of the most devastating pandemics in human history, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 75 to 200 million people and peaking in Europe in the years 1346–53. The pathogen responsible was the Yersinia pestis bacterium, probably causing several forms of plague. The Black Death is thought to have originated in the arid plains of central Asia, where it then travelled along the Silk Road, reaching the Crimea by 1343. From there, it was most likely carried by Oriental rat fleas living on the black rats that were regular passengers on merchant ships. Spreading throughout the Mediterranean and Europe, the Black Death is estimated to have killed 30–60% of Europe’s total population. All in all, the plague reduced the world population from an estimated 450 million down to 350–375 million in the 14th century. The aftermath of the plague created a series of religious, social, and economic upheavals, which had profound effects on the course of European history. It took 150 years for Europe’s population to recover. The plague recurred occasionally in Europe until the 19th century.

THE BLACK DEATH cont.
The most commonly noted symptom was the appearance of buboes in the groin, the neck and armpits, which oozed pus and bled when opened. This was followed by acute fever and vomiting of blood. Most victims died two to seven days after initial infection. David Herlihy identifies another potential sign of the plague: freckle-like spots and rashes which could be caused by flea-bites. The plague subsided once more people grew aware of it, hosts were quarantined, people practiced better personal hygiene, households burned candles and fires for clean air and they stopped themselves from travelling and migrating.

THE BLACK DEATH opinions.
I asked numerous people from different backgrounds and places; ‘What is your opinion on the Black Death?’ I gave them no other questions or provocatives, as i’ve learned in my life people will captalise, even if wrongly, on other people as much as possible. All asked were able to distinguish the Black Death as a plague which killed around half of Europe’s population around the 14th century. They also knew that the plague was introduced by fleas and unhygienic conditions, it then transmitted through human contact and exchange of blood and because of the unadvanced nature of the medical industry, the result was devistating. Some were sympathetic to those who had to endure the pandemic, knowing what the symptons were and what it looked liked. This question was my control question, The Black Death is usually taught in secondary school as part of History/Humanities. All had some form of information related to the event wether it be what happened, where or how. Those who struggled also stated they did learn about the subject but have forgotten most of it. As a comparison to other opinions on the subjects previous, those who are directly assosciated with, such as told, taught or experienced an event retain the information to some degree, whilst current events what are outside their day-to-day lifestyle are not given the attention they sometimes desperately need.

WORLD AIDS DAY NAT is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to transforming society’s response to HIV. they provide fresh thinking, expertise and practical resources to those living with HIV and campaign for their rights. Their vision is a world in which people living with HIV are treated as equal citizens with respect, dignity and justice, are diagnosed early and receive the highest standards of care, and in which everyone knows how and is able to protect themselves and others from HIV infection. World AIDS Day, observed on 1 December every year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. Government and health officials, non-governmental organizations and individuals around the world observe the day, often with education on AIDS prevention and control it also involves fundraising efforts and other events all across the globe. this day is symbolised by a red ribbon. As of 2013, AIDS has killed more than 36 million people worldwide and an estimated 35.3 million people are living with HIV, making it one of the most important global public health issues in recorded history.

LUSH ANIMAL TESTING PROTEST Jacqueline Traide volunteered for the deliberately shocking performance to underline a campaign aimed at drawing attention to the pain and cruelty inflicted on animals during laboratory tests on cosmetics. Dressed in nothing but a flesh-coloured body suit, she was put on display in the shop window of Lush cosmetic store’s branch in Regent Street, London, to re-enact widely used tests. Traide underwent 10hours of painful torture, re-creating and symbolising the same tests animals are put through on a day-today basis in the cosmetic industry. This include forced injections, forced feeding, hair/fur being shaven and pulled from it’s roots, gagged and also being tied up. She was publicly shamed, shaking and red-raw after the ordeal, but she hoped it would plant the seed of a new awareness in people to really start thinking about what they go out and buy and what goes into producing it. It sparked huged debate in social media and news due to it’s brutal, physical nature; something i’m wanting to re-create in my campaign. Over 300,000 people have signed the petition with responses saying how deeply sickening the experience was to them, and how disgusted that treatment like this, wether it be on humans, animals and anything alike, should not be comitted.

TAGLINES ‘THINK.’ - promotes positive action, bold and short, action understandable by all, provocative, means to think about others living in the represented ordeals, to think about yourself and how you can change it and how it affects you. ‘WHAT IF ___ WERE YOURS’ - pulls on people’s physical relationships, expresses what other families/people go through because of world tradegys. creates feelings of worry, distress and love, a more direct physical approach to generating attention. ‘DON’T IGNORE, LEARN MORE.’ - sums my goal up, quite long, rhyming; memorable and catchy. promotes positive action, learn more about the event, educating yourself. promotes education and learning alongside current world affairs and response. ‘USE IT. OR LOSE IT’ - threatening alongside the overall theme, instruction like being a prisoner and being told what to do, promotes learning and education.

CAMPAIGN MEDIA As a visual solution to the brief, a collection of media relative to my chosen cause would need to be produced. Stickers are an affordable and environmentally friendly advertising method, they can come in a diverse range of styles, shapes and bright colours. They are easily transferable and shared between people, but the small size can be a problem when trying to give out information. Producing stickers would be worthwhile, aslong as i carefully chose the most important, memorable information/images. Posters and Leaflets are more accessible when sharing information, important details and support, they have the same properties as stickers but can easily be looked over, and especially when they are being given out; people walk past and don’t give a daisy. Some eye-catching propaganda in town hotspots would be a suitable reason to produce these. The most accessible means of advertising today is through the internet, in particular social media. As i need a visual solution i can’t just start posting information on Facebook or Twitter. I have ideas of a short animation, including facts and images like the ones they play on Comic Relief etc. but more hand-drawn than filmed.
3. DEVELOPMENT
PHOTOGRAPHS When taking my photographs i wanted to make my message clear but also give hints of other themes supporting the claims i’m making. All photographs are set on the sofa in a livingroom, somewhere a person is familiar with when involving themselves in family or personal life, and something that everyone has or has equivalent too. The photos contain mother, father, brothers and sisters. These are the people who you are most attached to in the world, you are related and share a special bond between eachother, and you care about these people and would fight for these people in whatever situation they or you were in. All persons are maintaining a straight face, i wanted to achieve this to give the illusion of not caring, or showing ignorance. I chose to capture beheading because it’s an horrific act of murder and one what certainly captures attention. It can also causes scare among people and when a person it at their most vunerable is when they will take in information/do what a person says.
3. DEVELOPMENT
DEVELOPMENT From this point, i’m going to take the photographs and add type to create a set of awareness posters. These will be a collection with the same tagline but representing and showing a different fact/statistic along with a link or more information on the ordeal. I’m hoping to print these posters professionally and frame them, alongside this i will print my research pdf. Afterwards i’ll look into creating other media fitting with the posters such as stickers, web formats and possibly leaflets to further develop the project.
