The event has been created based on extensive research and independent surveys over the past six years, by awardwinning event specialists that have worked in the groundscare industry for over two decades.
Research shows that September is the most favoured time of year and that a mix of both indoor
space and outdoor demonstrations is the preferred format.
From an exhibitor point of view, GroundsFest will be an extremely cost-effective option and one which will opens its doors to a much wider range of companies.
“We have spent a considerable time talking with the industry to unpick what they really want from a trade show and we have built the GroundsFest concept based on the responses received together with ideas we have brought in from our own experience,” explained Chris Bennett, one of the organisers.
“We have been delighted with the positive responses we have had in what are the very early stages of our discussions with potential exhibitors.
“We are also meeting with the industry bodies and are keen that we can do as much as we can to assist them to meet their own particular objectives.”

sustainable seed solutions from DLF
DLF are putting sustainable and environmental solutions under the spotlight as they return to SALTEX this November on stand J052.
With predictions that drought conditions like those experienced this summer will become a more frequent occurrence, species such as tetraploid perennial ryegrass and clover will likely become key weapons in every turf manager’s armoury to maintain sward health and density during prolonged periods of hot and dry weather.
In attempts to repair and recover surfaces during the cooler season, the increased energy reserves of DLF’s 4turf® tetraploid perennial ryegrass demonstrates exceptional germination at temperatures as low as 4ºC. The strong, fast establishment and healthy plant development is backed up with a larger root system meaning 4turf® surfaces are more tolerant to drought and a range of other environmental stresses.
In European trials, 4turf® demonstrated exceptional resistance to disease – including Brown Patch – during the autumn and winter months as well as increased resistance to weed invasion due to its rapid establishment, reducing the need for costly fungicide and herbicide applications. The sustainable credentials of 4turf®, together with its wear-tolerant properties, has seen its inclusion in a number of Johnsons Sports Seed mixtures popular with football clubs including J4Turf and, the new mixture for 2022, J Premier 4Turf.
For spring renovations - and of particular interest for local
authorities, sports grounds and gardens – could be self-sustaining clover. The unique root nodules on clover are capable of converting atmospheric nitrogen into a gradual supply of natural fertiliser, resulting in sustained growth. Microclover, a smaller-leaved dwarf white clover, is incorporated into Masterline’s PM82 Microclover Sport mixture, blended to improve turf quality whilst being kinder to the environment thanks to its reduced requirements for herbicide, fungicide and fertiliser.
The DLF technical team will be on hand to discuss formulations from across the Johnsons Sports Seed, MM Seed and Masterline ranges, in addition to the Pro Flora wild flower and Colour Boost amenity flower collections. More than 25 wild flower mixtures are available, suited to a range of renovation and landscaping projects, each guaranteed to bring biodiversity and enhanced visual impact to amenity and agricultural spaces.
Allett announces creative lawn stripes champion
Now in its tenth year, the Allett Mowers annual Creative Lawn Stripes Competition once again attracted entries from all over the world. The prize is an Allett Liberty 43 mower with all cartridges and two cartridge stands. The past few years have been tough for everyone, say Allett, but what they have noticed is a growth in lawn-care enthusiasts spending more time in their gardens.
The aim of the competition is to encourage homeowners to use their lawns to design the most creative, eye-catching designs that truly show off the craftsmanship and dedication that goes into grass maintenance.
The standard of this year’s entries has again been exceptional, and it gets better year on year. This year’s judge was 2021 Champion Dennis West of Provo, Utah, USA following an internal vote done by a specialist Allett panel with the top six entries forwarded to Dennis to choose the winner.
“It was an honour to be asked to judge this year’s competition,” he says, “the top six presented some very strong entries, all of which show a love for lawn creativity Picking one winner was a tough job, but after analysing the entries I found one that, for me, embodied not only lawn striping creativity, but also a representation of the beauty of the United Kingdom.”
n 2nd place: Paul Wigman, Nottingham, Head Gardener Clumber Lodge
n 3rd place: Emile Hernandez, gardener, Somerville College Oxford
n 4th place, Simon Rice, South Australia
n 5th place: Dan Milne, Canada
n 6th place: Tom Frampton, Wales.
The top six entries came from England, Wales, Australia and Canada and the 2022 Champion is Edward Aitken, Head Gardener at Cornbury House, Oxfordshire.
Cornbury Park is a private estate in the town of Charlbury, fifteen miles from Oxford, England. The estate includes 1,700 acres of the most ancient forest in Britain and is host to events such as the awardwinning Wilderness Festival and charity fundraisers. Ed has entered the Allett competition three times and been placed in the top six each time. The judges’ comments praised the standard achieved.
‘The combination of radiating, straight, and angled stripes in this expansive design brings to mind the sectional features of an aerial image
of the English countryside with rolling hills divided by rock walls. The strong stripes that seamlessly blend from curved forms to straight demonstrate an expertise that ensured the final design met very particular standards of perfection’ Ed describes the process that led up to the winning design. “Our lawn is a very old lawn which we have been renovating to get it up to standard. It was cut with a ride-on originally, which didn’t pick up the grass clippings, so it was a bit of a mess. Now we cut with a Hayter 56 at various heights of cut. I changed the height depending on what part of the lawn I was cutting. The circle area has to be cut higher compared to the area closest to the house just because of the thickness of the lawn and how much thatch is left in the lawn. Each different pattern is cut at a different height, which helped to show off the pattern a bit more. The inspiration for the design comes from the centre circle part of the lawn where the chequerboard is, which is actually a helicopter landing area. The idea was that it looked amazing when the family and their guests were coming in in the helicopters, which
I thought was quite effective. Once I’d cut the circles, it was a case of breaking the lawn up into a couple of different sections and making sure it looked nice as you’re looking out. The family I work for have an outdoor eating area just outside the house so it looks good when they’re looking over the garden. I’d say it’s taken about a year to get it looking good. I cut it once a week with certain areas cut twice a week, so the central checkerboard area is cut twice a week in a different direction. I’m delighted to win as I’ve entered three times now. I was third the first time, second the last time. I thought I’d stand a chance this year with the circles making it an interesting lawn, so I’m very pleased to have won. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with the prize. I’ll probably use it in my own garden at home as I’ve got quite a large lawn. Maybe I will start doing some patterns!” Competition judge Dennis West’s final comment was to offer congratulations to all the finalists, saying, to make it this far is quite an accomplishment. “Most of the winners in recent years entered more than once before winning the prize, so keep entering and you may be next!”

Deere keeps Yorkshire Sculpture Park in great shape
Multi award-winning Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) attracts half a million visitors annually to its 500-acre estate near Wakefield.
Fashioned around 18th century Bretton Hall, the Grade II listed historic park and garden features 100 sculptures and installations scattered across the valley destination, with north and south sides sloping down to two ornamental lakes.
This year YSP celebrates its 45th anniversary. The Park opens every day except 24 and 25 December, so the eight-strong grounds team knows the work to keep presentation pristine rolls on relentlessly.
Diverse demand across the Park stretches from amenity grass and close-mown turf to formal gardens, arb work, water management and even a living roof on The Underground Galley, notes Mark Chesman, Head of Estates and Projects, who started life here
as a landscape co-ordinator.
“Exhibitions and events run year-round,” he says, “and visitors expect everything to look clean, tidy and well-maintained to set the sculptures off in their best light.”
Handling the scale of the park’s upkeep depends on minimal machinery downtime and helping the team in that capacity is a full, flexible service agreement with local John Deere dealer Balmers GM.
A longstanding Deere customer, YSP had no hesitation moving across to Balmers when it opened a branch locally in 2015 after the previous dealer closed.
“All the Deere kit is exceptionally reliable,” Mark says. “Balmers are just a phone call away if we have any snags and they respond swiftly with fast turnaround on machine replacements.”
The cost of the annual service, undertaken in autumn/winter when summer’s heavy footfall lightens, is
spread over 12 months, “which helps improve cashflow and gives us added peace of mind in knowing what the outlay will be”, Mark adds. “We replace older machinery as and when we need to, with new Deere units, such as our wide area and front deck mowers, covered by JD Powergard protection.”
The fleet of five diesel Gator TH 6x4s does the donkey work of transporting equipment, tools, material and green waste around the park. “The tipping facility is particularly useful, while the Gator’s six tyres ensure lower ground impact in the more sensitive areas of the site,” Mark says.
Under his mission to switch over to electric tools and machinery, Mark has started the process by adding a Gator TE to the fleet. “Our environmental policy and action plan is designed to reduce fossil fuel use and minimise our impact on the climate,” he explains.
“The Gator TE delivers zero emissions, has less vibration and is cheaper to run because it is a far simpler vehicle – just a battery and motor. It’s charged up overnight using a three-pin plug and we get a full day’s work on that – particularly important because of the size of the Park.”
Covering the 30 hectares of grassed open space around the hall is the JD 1600 turbo mower, with front and two side decks, supported by a 1580 ride-on collector mower, which Mark says is “a fantastic machine that comes into its own at the start and end of the season and to ensure the Park is tip-top
for exhibitions”. Summer and other peak periods see the Deere mowers on duty trimming the overflow car park, meanwhile.
Under Balmers’ aftercare service, the park team attend an on-site induction programme when new machinery is delivered, followed by an in-house equivalent that includes a rundown on tyre checks and grease points, ensuring everyone’s fully competent.
John Deere’s 997 zero-turn ride-on handles the critical cutting in confined spaces, Mark says. “We want to be able to operate in ever tighter areas, as the complexity of maintaining the park rises. The 997 is coming up for replacement so we’ll be discussing options with Balmers soon.”
For some work, machinery and tools cannot replace the age-old traditional methods, Mark explains. “The team has to keep a safe distance from the sculptures when using ride-ons.
“Close cutting is completed with hand shears as we cannot risk even the slightest chip on any of the artworks.”
YSP includes works by British
and international artists such as Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore (one of the largest open-air displays of his bronzes in Europe).
The Park manages a stand of historic woodland of high conservation value that numbers native species such as oak, ash, beech and hornbeam, with some veteran specimens estimated to be more than 300 years old.
“All trees on the estate are surveyed regularly. We have 2,000 parkland individuals, excluding the woodland,” says Mark. “Our longstanding arborists,
Earnshaws, manage the large mature trees, while everyone is qualified to complete ground level work up to 380mm.”
With a board of trustees whose members include the present Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage, YSP has every opportunity to wax lyrical about its many qualities but Mark does a pretty good job himself.
“This is a wonderful place to work and members of staff tend to stay here a long time [Mark himself has clocked up 17 years] to face the everyday challenges of what is a complex though beautiful place.”
Kubota releases new LXe-261 Compact Electric
is range and operational time. For that reason, the new LXe-261 is equipped with a large-capacity battery that can provide rapid one hour charging and three to four hours of continuous run-time. This means operators will be able to quickly charge the batteries during lunch and continue working in the afternoon for optimal efficiency.
The LXe-261 also includes key features for mowing, hauling, and other green space management tasks, such as an independent PTO, a comfortable HST transmission and multiple hydraulic outlets. The specification of the LXe-261 is contained in a compact size, making this model well-suited to a range of applications.
Kubota’s new LXe-261, which has been designed to meet current environmental standards, will be available for rental and showcased at several events around Europe over the coming months.
With an increasing number of European markets tightening regulations and implementing bans on diesel vehicles, many local authorities and other public bodies are actively seeking alternatives - such as electric vehicles (EVs) and fuel-cell vehicles (FCVs). In light of this, and in line with Kubota’s Environmental Vision published in 2021 to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, they have been researching, developing and trialling electric tractors.
One of the major challenges when developing electric tractors
Kubota’s new LXe-261 will soon be displayed at several shows in Europe, including Salon Vert in France, EIMA in Italy and SALTEX in November, Europe’s largest turf management show. It will then be available for rental in the UK from April 2023. After its release, customer feedback will be sought in order to shape the future developments and expansions to Kubota’s ecofriendly product line-up.
Kubota Corporation is the first Japanese manufacturer to release a limited number of LXe261 compact electric tractors in Europe, with the company actively striving towards carbon neutrality.
For that reason, Kubota has been transitioning to electric, hybrid, and fuel-cell drives in an effort to decarbonise power sources and reduce CO2 emissions.
These developments represent an important strategic step for Kubota in the UK and Europe, as it aims to fulfil the requirements of core customer segments who have long invested in Kubota’s range of compact tractors, utility vehicles and ride-on mowers for park maintenance and other groundcare tasks.
Makita launches high performance 36V backpack blower
Expanding its range of grounds maintenance tools and machines, Makita has launched the UB002C 36V Battery Backpack Blower. Designed to meet the needs of professional contractors, the UB002C matches the performance of a 50cc petrol machine and delivers the long run-times required but with minimal noise and vibration.
The powerful UB002C features a simple variable speed control and produces a blowing force of 22 newtons, a maximum air volume of up to 19.0 m3 /min and an air velocity of up to 76.0 m/sec. The 36V power is supplied by the Makita PDC1200 portable backpack battery, which can be used with a range of compatible Makita cordless machines. The PDC1200 includes a 33Ah solid state battery and with the UB002C provides approximately a 45-minute continuous run-time
at maximum power, offering most contractors enough to cover a day’s work based on actual trigger time.
One of the key advantages of the backpack configuration of the UB002C is that it reduces user fatigue, especially when used for longer periods of time. With the weight of the machine and battery transferred to the user’s back, rather than supported by their arm, the UB002C can be operated more comfortably for longer. The design of the harness, with padding in key areas, also makes it comfortable to wear.
For ease of use, the UB002C has a cruise control feature, an adjustable control grip position and LED battery gauge indicator for simple power monitoring. It is also IPX4 rated meaning it is showerproof and can therefore be used in changeable weather conditions.
The UB002C is available as a body only (UB002CZ) option or supplied with the PDC 1200A02 portable battery pack (UB002CX3).
Kevin Brannigan, Marketing Manager at Makita said: “The UB002C is ideal for professional contractors who are looking for the power of a petrol machine but with the low noise, vibration and minimal environmental impact of cordless power.” n www.makitauk.com
London park wins award in memory of The Queen
Helen Griffiths said: “Protection of green space through the Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge delivered a fitting legacy for HM The Queen’s longstanding Patronage of our organisation. We know how important accessible green space is for our health, our wellbeing, our communities and our environment. The deeply saddening news of the last week has added extra significance to the award for the OR Tambo Recreation Ground. Congratulations on this success which demonstrates how much local residents value the park.”
The OR Tambo Recreation Ground was renamed in 2021 in memory of South African anti-apartheid campaigner, Oliver Reginald Tambo who spent time living in exile in nearby Muswell Hill. A statue of him gifted by the South African High Commission is located in the park which is very popular for football, tennis and Australian Rules football
Oliver Tambo Recreation Ground in Haringey has been named at the UK’s Favourite Queen Elizabeth II Field as part of a summer-long campaign by green space charity Fields in Trust to find the UK’s Favourite Parks and celebrate the green spaces that have been so important to us all over the last two years.
A total of 364 local green spaces were nominated by members of the public and over 30,000 people voted for their favourite park. Alongside the UK’s Favourite - Penrhos Coastal Park in Anglesey - home nation winners and local favourites were also selected. A special award, marking the Platinum Jubilee of Fields in Trust Patron, Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, was also determined by the public vote and the winner of UK’s Favourite Queen Elizabeth II Field 2022 is OR Tambo Recreation Ground. Formerly known as Albert Road Rec, the park is one of seven Queen Elizabeth II Fields in Haringey*.
In 2012 Fields in Trust inaugurated the Queen Elizabeth II Fields
Challenge with the aim of protecting parks and green spaces across the UK to mark Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee, the London Olympics and the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Legal protection ensures that the parks which are part of the scheme can never be built on or sold off for development. The programme resulted in 1,388 parks and green spaces covering over 8,500 hectares being protected forever to benefit people, place and planet. This ensures that communities across all four nations of the UK, stretching from Shetland to Cornwall, will have always have access to green space.
Ten years on from the original Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge and to mark the Platinum Jubilee, a special one-off category was added to this year’s UK’s Favourite Parks award to celebrate these spaces. HM The Queen served as Patron of Fields in Trust for seventy years, frequently attending events alongside her husband His late Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, who served for 64 years as the charity’s President.
Fields in Trust Chief Executive
Cllr Julie Davies, Cabinet Member for Communities and Civic Life, said: “O.R. Tambo Rec has already been recognised as one of London’s six favourite parks and this additional award is an honour, especially as it commemorates the legacy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll. I’d like to thank the Friends group, our parks staff and everyone else who has helped to make this park such a popular and welcoming public space. We found out during the pandemic just how much people need parks for leisure and exercise and for the benefits they bring to our residents’ physical health and wellbeing.”
Emma Burridge, Chair of the Friends of O.R. Tambo Recreation Ground, said: “This is fantastic news! To be recognised in this way is ultimate proof of people power, and the feelings local people have towards their local park. This shows what we’ve known locally all along… that by working together, a park can be transformed and really be at the very heart of the community.”

Bringing Grade II building back to life
Respected landowners are working in partnership with a leading lawncare business to redevelop a stunning 500 yearold property and gardens.
John and Vicky Gardner began restoring Grade II-listed Groes Hall, near Denbigh, more than two decades ago.
The buildings were in a state of disrepair but following significant investment are edging closer to completion, leaving them to focus on land around the 16th century former manor house.
Now – with the support of St Asaph-based GreenThumb –former accountancy director John (pictured) is renovating the stunning lawns he says are the “centrepiece” of the project. “We’ve done a great deal to the house itself and have now turned our attention to the gardens and primarily the lawns,” he said. “It has been a huge task but with the help of GreenThumb we have made a lot of progress, the lawns are looking so much better.”
John added: “When I first visited the property it was the garden I fell
in love with before the house itself, the incredible plants, trees, flowers and of course these beautiful lawns.
“With any property, especially one with a history such as this, you feel like a curator in some respects, a custodian as one of many generations to have lived here, so bringing it back to its former glory gives us great joy.
“The lawn is the centrepiece of that, for my grandchildren to play on, for our family and as a place of sanctuary and peace – I could not recommend GreenThumb enough for the part they’ve played.”
GreenThumb is the market leader for lawn treatment services with 220 branches nationwide.
Founded by CEO Stephen Waring in 1986, the business employs more than 100 staff at its Denbighshire headquarters, including Alasdair Boyes, Branch Operations Manager for North Wales.
Having spent more than 30 years with the organisation, Alasdair has worked on thousands of lawns across the UK, and says this project is one of the biggest he has come across.
“When I first visited, the lawns were in a very poor condition and more than 100 years old, with a lot of weeds, moss and damage,” he said.
“In partnership we have seen a huge improvement thanks to the treatments introduced, the aeration and scarification and as John is a keen gardener and mows the lawns himself, he is able to let us know of any issues or concerns.
“I always feel a great sense of

A range of Pellenc batterypowered equipment is helping to maintain the grounds at one of Scotland’s grandest mansions.
Marchmont House is a ‘Grade A’ listed Palladian mansion in Berwickshire built in 1750 by Hugh Hume-Campbell, 3rd Earl of Marchmont. It is regarded as one of the grandest mansions in Scotland and over the years has been home to makers and creators who have inspired many through creativity.
It is therefore fitting that Marchmont House uses a range of Pellenc battery-powered equipment - a brand which has based its success on a policy of continuous creative innovation.
The Pellenc equipment is used to help maintain the 5,000-acre estate at Marchmont House and Head Gardener Toby Loveday explained why.
“A big part of our ethos is nature conservation and our impact on the environment,” he said. “The idea has always been to try and move away from petrol powered machinery and start using battery operated equipment.
“Another reason was because we have a lot of events taking place and we wanted to be able to continue working, regardless of the presence
Pellenc is Grade A at Marchmont House
of our visitors. To do this we needed to be able to work quietly and you get that with Pellenc equipment.
“The reason we chose Pellenc above other brands was because we wanted equipment which has been built to last. There is going to be a lot of use with this equipment over the next few years, and it must be reliable and able to perform at a really high level. We get this with Pellenc.”
Pellenc is the world’s leading expert in battery-powered tools for maintaining landscapes. Light, odourless, noise-free, with no starting problems and enough power to enable professional users to work for a full day on a single charge, it’s no wonder more and more professional users are turning to Pellenc. It is an attractive alternative to those who have, for several years, been relying on fuel-based machinery.
With an extensive product list available from Pellenc, Toby chose to invest in a whole new fleet consisting of Helion hedge-cutters, Rasion mowers, Excelion strimmers and Airion blowers, which he purchased through Agrovista Amenity.
“The mower has proved particularly good at getting between obstacles,” said Toby. “The Rasion is lightweight and manoeuvrable, and all the staff can use it in a trouble-free manner. It
has great features and I like the ease at which you can adjust the height of cut and the variable speed settings.
“I also like the option of having different heads on the strimmers and the City Cut head has been particularly effective in dealing with brambles and some of the more awkward things to control. The hedgecutters, being lightweight and powerful, have been fantastic too.
“For us, the biggest benefits when it comes to using the Pellenc equipment have been the long battery-life, the low vibration levels, and the overall comfort for the operator. We can also use the equipment in all weathers which is important in the Scottish climate.
“I would recommend Pellenc to anybody who is considering switching to battery-powered equipment.”
Pellenc offers an industry leading four-year commercial warranty for all batteries and a three-year warranty for all tools.
Pellenc is distributed exclusively in the UK by Etesia UK.

ISEKI makes life easier at St Catz
Paul Shapter, Head Gardener at St Catherine’s College, one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford, claims that his new ISEKI ride-on mower has made life a lot easier.
St Catherine’s College, affectionately known as St Catz, is the largest college within the world-famous University of Oxford. The college is renowned for its modern architecture and many restful open spaces which offers a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
Paul and his team maintain these open spaces which comprises of gardens and lawns; and he revealed that he was looking for something to make life a little easier for everyone.
“We are all getting a bit older, a bit creakier, and our backs are a bit more susceptible to damage,” he said. “Therefore, we started looking for something that would make everything a lot easier and after some searching, we came across the ISEKI SXG326, which we found to be very cost efficient.”
Tough, reliable, and productive, the SXG326 has been built for the most demanding users. It has
a larger operator platform for a comfortable working environment and a 54” (1.37m) mower deck with wider overlapping which provides enhanced productivity and a superior quality of cut. A 2-pedal hydrostatic control and more legroom is featured while the large capacity, high torque 1123cc diesel engine is powerful and fuel efficient.
The new instrument panel and dial in height-of-cut adjustment makes the SXG326 the most operator friendly and intuitive large compact tractor mower on the market. Hopper capacity is an impressive 600 litres with an easy to remove collector that allows for simple cleaning and maintenance. The SXG326 is available in road homologated version with lighting kit and handbrake.
Paul explained how the SXG326 has indeed made life easier at St Catz.
“I think the versatility of it is one
of the best features - as well as cutting grass excellently it is also like an outdoor hoover. It is great at sweeping up and collecting a whole range of debris. This gives us the diversity to use it in the autumn just as much as we use it through the summer and spring. I find that it picks up remarkably well in all weathers whether it is wet or dry.
“The high tip is really good, and it means that one person can do the job a lot quicker without having someone running around fetching, carrying, shovelling, cleaning up or tipping. It combines all sorts of efficiencies.
“The size of the box is another big plus – being able to collect that amount of grass and condensing it into a huge box is fantastic. Another good feature is that all the basic maintenance points are accessible and easy to get to.
“Adjusting the height is a simple manoeuvre – there are no rulers or measurements involved, it is a simple wheel that just turns to adjust the height of cut – it is incredibly easy.
“I think what really makes a big difference for us is the lack of blockages,” continued Paul. “The size of the chute and the way that the blades cut mean that it is all gathered and shot out the back quick enough not to block.
“Essentially, you just can’t beat the value of this ISEKI machine and I would certainly recommend it to all gardeners and grounds people.”
Rain Bird introduces the RC2 smart irrigation controller
The new RC2 Smart Irrigation Control Solution has been added to Rain Bird’s range of irrigation controllers. Used in conjunction with and accessed through the Rain Bird Mobile App, it enables users to manage remotely residential and light commercial installations with confidence, with or without WiFi.
The RC2 is a powerful, contractor grade controller that is fast and easy to use. It has an eight station capacity, three standard programs and four start times/programs as well as a Master Valve pump start relay. When paired with the free of charge professional App, contractors and site managers have full WiFi control of irrigation scheduling of multiple sites and zones. Through alerts, users can monitor and manage all irrigation events and warnings in real-time and make adjustments to prevent overwatering
or costly wastage. The landscape will receive only the water it needs while potentially saving up to 50% in water.
A number of features support the claim that combining the RC2 with the Mobile App makes it the most efficiently programmed controller available today. WiFi connectivity and Rain Bird’s Quick Pair technology enables fast, seamless initial set-up between a mobile phone or tablet and lasting stability. The RC2 is compatible with iOS 8.0 and
Android 6 or later mobile devices.
Irrigation programs are instantly sent and imported into the controller. Schedule templates allow contractors to employ commonly used irrigation programs or alternatively customised schedules can be set, including watering specific zones at specific times. Weather data from local weather sources can also be obtained and be used to automatically adjust system run times daily.
As well as access to the advanced scheduling features of the Mobile App, the RC 2 also has simple touch commands at the controller interface. A built-in complete system access point enables allows users to configure and make changes to the controller on-site if a Wifi network or hotspot is unavailable. In the event of power failure, the RC2 memorises and permanently saves the current programming.
New FG 100 flow sensor technology offers affordable protection
As droughts and water usage restrictions look set to become more frequent, new ways of saving water and using it more efficiently are being seriously considered by property owners and contractors.
Rain Bird Flow Sensor technology is designed to monitor irrigation systems and identify any emerging
groundworks or vehicles could go unnoticed without flow sensors and result in damage to property, flooded landscapes and higher water bills.
The latest addition to Rain Bird’s range is the new FG100 Flow Sensor which is designed for residential or smaller commercial installations. It
controller that supports flow monitoring and remedial action can be undertaken immediately.
When paired with Rain Bird’s mobile app for iPhone or Android, which gives the user full control over flow settings, this can be conveniently carried out from any location.
The FG 100 is an up-front, low cost investment and as a simple add-on is fast and easy to install using standard irrigation wire. Its design includes a paddle wheel that sits in ceramic bearings and ensures durability.
It is winter ready and does not need to be removed during the annual shutdown when using air to push water out of the system.

WHAT’S ON?
In addition to learning about new products, services and suppliers to the industry from home and abroad, SALTEX also has an extensive programme of events and learning opportunities.
SALTEX has links with the Football Foundation and this year like all others sees the relevant funding bodies from the sporting world come together to share the impact of financial support in the groundscare industry. And BASIS will be attending too, who at this year’s show will be presenting the latest information on this year’s hot topic –sustainability – in a sporting context.
LEARNING LIVE
The Learning LIVE schedule this year has been extended to over 30 sessions, with additional papers attacking the key issues for the grounds care industry of pay, career development, recruitment, and retention, how to negotiate in the workplace and how to find out about the millions of pounds of grant funding available from sports clubs. But what’s at the heart of Learning LIVE and this year’s show is
sustainability and the environment.
Those managing and maintaining sports turf and green spaces are already having to deal with the impact of climate change and industry suppliers are doing their best to innovate and help grounds people minimise the impact of droughts and floods. The session on reducing the impact of future water restrictions on golf and sports turf, for example, with Owen Turpin from the Environment Agency, Tony Hanson from Environmental Solutions International and Robin Price from Anglian Water discussing the water charter and how to deal with it will provide valuable practical advice.
The full seminar line up is available online at saltex.org. uk, but whether it’s elite sports grounds attendees are interested in or a strategy for grassroots football, Learning LIVE has it covered and provides the opportunity to build knowledge and stay ahead of the game.
ECO VILLAGE
The whole concept of the Eco Village is to showcase sustainable and environmentally-friendly
practices in grounds care and consider what is a sustainable piece of machinery – what’s the impact on the environment and how does it help achieve neutrality? The Eco Village features a programme of daily demonstrations of cutting-edge sustainable technology, offering visitors an opportunity of seeing several products in action. Plus, industry experts will offer advice on green technology and how it could benefit current working practices.
GMA INDUSTRY AWARDS
The GMA Industry Awards hosted by the BBC’s Mark Clemmit are back for the 12th year. It’s so important to celebrate the achievements of individuals and teams operating in
grounds management and is key to positive workforce development. With 18 awards and an evening to celebrate everyone nominated, it’s a ringing endorsement to the good work and talented people in the industry. Tickets to the event can be purchased at saltex.org.uk
So, whether working in educational establishments, community facilities, on private estates, or in sports clubs at grassroot, amateur, or professional level, if you’re passionate about keeping green spaces and playing surfaces safe, accessible, and sustainable, and you’re keen to stay ahead of the game in the grounds care industry, then SALTEX is the show for you.

In trials, it has been proven to be as effective at treating broadleaf weeds – including species that can be difficult to control by conventional methods – as Glyphosate.
Its active ingredient is hot water, which is insulated by a patented foam formulated from 100% natural plant oils and sugars meaning it can be used in any weather and on any surface, including environmentally-sensitive areas and those close to children or animals. The foam maintains kill zone temperatures for six times longer than other heat-based treatments, killing the weed, damaging the root and sterilising seeds and spores to reduce re-growth.
In addition to controlling weeds, moss and other unwanted vegetation, it offers further benefit by tackling a host of other urban tasks including sanitisation, gum removal and the cleaning of graffiti.
