In this desert-like spot, cereals, tomatoes and cotton were planted and there were rooms to safeguard the tools and salt extracted from the flats plus two lime furnaces. This area, according to all the authorities and institutions, met all the requirements for the building of Tenerife’s airport, but the distance of Los Cristianos from the capital, the lack of a good road and other failings caused the project to be doomed.

Playa de Las Américas boasts a perfect climate with pleasant temperatures all year round on our beaches. It is not in vain that the water temperature is approximately 19 degrees. This luxury means that surfers can practice their sport wearing a lycra wetsuit or for those who tend to feel the cold, a 3/2 mm wetsuit. In this way, bathing can be prolonged for over two hours without feeling the cold, something unthinkable in Europe during the winter months.
The coastline of Playa de las Américas is perfect for surf and body-board lovers. Here there are well-defined peaks in the area of Palmeras, El Medio, Playa Honda, La Derecha, El Conquistador, La Piscina, El Dedo and Fitenia. All of them are in perfect condition, thus allowing both beginners and advanced level surfers to practice their sport here.
The summer sun can be enjoyed on the beaches during the summer, with a minimum of half metre ‘’glassy’’ waves with constant south force. No wetsuit is needed, as the water temperature is over 20 degrees.
The waves at this spot are distinguished by being rocky reef (commonly called low waves). This means that a wave is formed with unique characteristics, a wave which is long and even with tubes. These waves are highly valued by surfers, and they rival those of other places around the world.
Surf schools offer beginner’s classes to enjoy the waves at Playa de Las Américas. In a stretch of beach over 1.5 kilometres long you will find waves considered as among the best in the world.
In the 90s, the ‘Palmeras’ wave was amongst the ten best waves in Europe, giving it well-deserved recognition both nationally and internationally, adding to the series of multiple surfing championships of different categories carried out at this location.

These days, the coast of Los Cristianos reveals diverse beaches for tourists and residents to enjoy. A wide range of infrastructures, together with the esplanade that runs along their edge, make Playa de Las Vistas and Playa de Los Cristianos a benchmark for maritime leisure opportunities. Playa de los Cristianos is considered one of the most historic beaches in the municipality of Arona. Located right in the hub of Los Cristianos, it still retains the essence of what

HISTORICAL DETAILS Playa de Los Cristianos is linked to a great extent with the beginnings of tourism in the south of Tenerife. In 1957, a group of Swedish young people suffering reduced mobility due to rheumatic problems arrived in the fishing village of Los Cristianos after having travelled half way round the world. In this place, their health improved noticeably thanks to the pleasant climate and beach. The arrival of these Scandinavian visitors led to the birth of tourism in the municipality of Arona. Since then up to the present day, Los Cristianos has become a tourist attraction for visitors of all different nationalities

Las Galletas emerged as a place linked to fishing and shellfish gathering in its beautiful bays. Playa de Las Galletas is where the fishermen used to beach their boats and where their wives used to classify the fish on the black pebbles, laid out in boxes or baskets for sale. On the shore of Playa de Las Galletas was ‘’El Salón’’, today no longer there but still present in the memories of the local residents. El Salón was an early 20th century construction, related to the tomato harvest. Tomatoes were stored in El Salón while waiting to be transferred to the capital of the island, Santa Cruz, on coasting vessels, for their subsequent exportation.

Costa del Silencio Just a few kilometres away from Las Galletas is the tourist destination Costa del Silencio, where the first tourist resorts in the south of the island were built. Just as its name implies, the nature of the coastline at Costa del Silencio is different from that of the rest of Arona. Tenerife’s volcanic relief has bestowed a series of small coves to this place and spots suitable for bathing. There is a little walkway that runs along the coastline with various accesses to enjoy bathing in open waters. True to its name, this is one of the most peaceful bathing areas in the municipality of Arona, although more suitable for adults given the lack of sand and resting areas. NIGHT OF SAN JUAN
SPORTING ACTIVITIES
The night of San Juan has become a ritual in which every year, on the 23rd of June, there is something special in the air. The beaches turn into everyone’s meeting point from dusk to dawn, various bonfires are lit and fire and night-time swimming are the essence of this magical night.
In the summer months there are various sporting activities, such as a keep-fit gym, Beach soccer and Beach volleyball tournaments, and Tai Chi. The beaches of Arona are a genuine open-air gymnasium. Tourists and locals are often seen strolling or training on them.
SEA PROCESSIONS IN HONOUR OF THE VIRGIN, NUESTRA SEÑORA DEL CARMEN
BIBLIOPLAYA This activity is designed to foster reading in children. The project promotes children’s attraction to books and the beach is the perfect place for this in the summer.
The sea is the main protagonist in a setting in which traditions are deeply rooted. The festivities of Carmen are held in various towns, and history breathes life into a coastal procession which ends with a firework display in the sea. Without a doubt a show worth seeing.

Danger, presence of jellyfish
JELLYFISH STINGS
SUNBATHING ADVICE
The presence of jellyfish on the coastline is possible, especially in summer. The “Levante” eastern storms bring them into the shore.
Sun-bathing is beneficial for several illnesses. Enjoying the sea and sunrays is recommendable for health and perfect for holidays, however certain recommendations should be kept in mind:
Normally, jellyfish stings are not serious, causing skin discomfort and itching.. • Exposure should be before 11:30 in the morning or after 16:00, avoiding midday hours which is when the sun has a greater quantity of infrared rays and does more damage to the skin. Watching your own shadow is a good way of knowing when to avoid the sun. If the shadow projected is smaller or the same size as your own body, it means that it is the worst time, whilst when the shadow is taller and tends to elongate itself, it is possible to sunbathe without danger.
First Aid measures to be taken with jellyfish stings. • When a jellyfish stings us, the pain and itching are immediate. • The first thing to do is clean the area affected by the sting. • Never use freshwater, as it could break the stinging cells, causing another sting. • Salt water can be used to clean the affected area. • Apply cold to the affected area for 15 minutes, do not apply ice directly onto the sting, first place it in a cloth or towel. • If there are the remains of a tentacle stuck to the skin, we must remove it, but never with bare hands. • Do not rub with towels or sand or anything that might make it hurt more. • For more information go to the nearest Marine Search and Rescue post or to any medical centre..
• Babies and the elderly must take special care when they are in the open air, as sun exposure causes a great loss of liquids which must be constantly replaced. Therefore, it is recommendable to drink lots of water every time you sunbathe. • The use of sun protection with a high SPF is important during exposure to the sun and to protect yourself with a hat or cap, children in particular.

FOR A CLEANER BEACH Keeping beaches clean requires the work of many individuals, and it is essential for everyone to collaborate. It is vital that we avoid leaving rubbish on the sand, rocks or sea. How? Taking our waste off the beach and throwing it in the corresponding paper, glass or plastic and can containers. Arona Town Hall’s environmental area has provided different recycling containers where all types of waste can be deposited. In order to avoid our coasts from filling up with cigarette ends, the Marine Search and Rescue Team in Playa de Las Vistas provides bathers with free ashtrays to put them in, thus avoiding contaminating the sand with them. Keeping our coast in good shape to be enjoyed depends on all of us.
You too can collaborate!
