usturialdea-Urdaibai is composed of 20 municipalities each with a special charm; Mundaka, renowned worldwide for its left-hand break wave, Sukarrieta with its wonderful landscapes and Busturia with the peculiar Madariaga Tower, head office of the Basque Country Biodiversity Centre. Makes sure you don't miss the Urdaibai Bird Center, in Gautegiz-Arteaga, an open window to the Biosphere Reserve. The Research and Dissemination Centre studies birds and their habitats for the protection of wildlife and nature. The centre is also an observatory, and tracks more than 200 migratory species that visit or transit the area each year. Nearby, the beach at Laida is the biggest of the Mundaka Estuary: almost a kilometre of fine golden sand.

It is ideal for children due to its shallow waters, and offers a clear view of the estuary mouth with Izaro Island in the background. Laga, next to Cape Ogo単o, is one of the most beautiful sandy beaches of the Basque Coast. Its waves attract many surfers and other lovers of water sports such as sailing and sea kayaking.
Along the Basque Coast you will find charming fishing villages such as Bermeo and Elantxobe, with its houses by the sea. Gernika-Lumo with its symbolic oak in front of the Casa de Juntas (Basque Assembly Hall) is another must. And remember that you are only a short walk from the magnificent experience of climbing to the Chapel of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe.

Gaztelugatxe Gaztelugatxe Protected Biotope forms one of Biscay's most remarkable sites in the environs of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve... This magnificant rock puts out into the sea defying the rough waves of the Cantabrian Sea. The photo and the climb to the Chapel of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, which holds offerings made by sailors saved from shipwreck, are a must. According to tradition, if you ring the bell of the chapel thirteen times the wish you make will come true. Come on! It's well worth the effort.

OMA FOREST They call it "enchanted" and no wonder. This is the forest near Urdaibai that painter and sculptor Agustín Ibarrola used as his canvas. In this land-art work the artist traced geometric forms and human and animal figures on trees and stones. Some of these are only visible from certain viewpoints from which images on various different trunks form a joint composition. This magical enclave opens the possibility of a new relationship between nature and art. The experience will be even more colourful on a sunny day, but the beauty of the surroundings and the rich fauna will seduce you no matter what the weather. Make sure you do not miss the nearby Santimamiñe Caves, a repository of Paleolithic art. 9

he Gorbeia Natural Park, with its 20,016 hectares, is a traditional benchmark for Basque mountaineering. Its summit (altitude 1,482 meters) marks the boundary between Àlava and Biscay.

Gorbeia is a perfect example of the authentic Basque Country. Just 20 minutes from Bilbao and Vitoria-Gasteiz, it encapsulates a lifestyle that draws the visitor's attention: a culture and language of marked character, local crafts, festive pilgrimages and traditional cuisine...
In Gorbeia there are several different types of landscape depending on the underlying geological strata. Towering rocks such as Aldamin and Lekanda give way to rolling pastures with stands of beech and oak. The Mairulegorreta Cave, more than 12 kilometres long, is one of the best known caves along with the Itxina karst, found in the Itxina Protected Biotope. In the northeast of the karst visitors can find the wellknown entrance to the “Eye of Atxular” is found.
Gorbeia Central Park Visitors can enjoy experiencing the wonderful forests, the varied wildlife and the stars at night in the heart of the nature of the Basque Country.
Another of the scenic wonders of this area is the Goiuri waterfall in Álava, more than 100 metres high. The quality of the landscape and the cultural significance the Park has, is one of the reasons why it has become the focus of numerous sporting activities: abseiling, climbing, hiking, mountaineering, mountain biking, potholing, multi-adventure, trekking, orienteering...

he Urkiola Natural Park consists of the highest land of the Aramotz Range, which forms a significant limestone barrier between the Biscayan districts of Arratia, the Durango district and the Aramaio valley in Araba. This rugged landscape also separates the Cantabrian and Mediterranean watersheds.
The park includes a series of mountain ranges, limestone rocks, cliffs and deep valleys, with peaks that have fostered a strong love of climbing and hiking. Anboto, the highest peak, is very popular and the Mari Cave is a mythological reference point.

GREAT
IDEA This Natural Park takes its name from the Sanctuary erected in honour of Saint Antonio Abad and Saint Antonio of Padua. In front of the Sanctuary of Urkiola you will find a stone that, according to popular legend, helps young women of marriageable age to find a husband; visitors must walk around it for three times for its magic to work.

On the western border of Biscay with Cantabria lies a mountainous area within the landscape region known as Las Encartaciones: the Armañón or Ranero Natural Park. Here you will find highland and mountain districts amongst which the peaks of Armañón, Ranero, Surbias and Los Jorrios stand out. The subsoil of the park is criss crossed by more than 200 remarkable caves and potholes. Do not miss the unique Pozalagua Cave.

isit the largest colony of griffon vultures in Gipuzkoa; see the first complete skeleton of a cave lion in the Iberian Peninsula; tour the impressive Iturrigorri beech forest or walk among herds of sheep on some of the Basque Country's most popular highlands... everything is within your reach in the Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park, the mountain range which is the benchmark for Basque mountaineers and forms the great divide between Gipuzkoa and Álava. Besides being the highest of the Basque Country's mountain ranges, the AizkorriAratz Natural Park is the home of a remarkable cultural heritage: it contains dolmens, ancient cave dwellings, and old Roman roads... The park also offers several routes for vehicles. The Goierri access in Aizkorri is well known and leads through the famous San Adrian tunnel at the mountain pass between Gipuzkoa and the plains of Alava. It also crosses the ancient roadway (Camino Real (Royal Road) and Camino de Santiago (Santiago Pilgrimage Route)), which is easily accessible from the Otzaurte saddle (Zegama). 14
Arantzazu: a religious and cultural landmark Other routes form part of accessible tracks leading through a fascinating historical and architectural heritage. The one from the Sanctuary of Arantzazu to the caserío (typical Basque farmhouse) of Gomiztegi, currently a shepherds' school, is an example of this rich heritage. The village of Oñati, at the foot of the Sanctuary, is another one. You can also get to the Urbia moorlands, and if you climb the Aratz summit from here you can do several trekking routes. Mounts Kurtzebarri and Atxorrotx await you when you pass Aretxabaleta and Eskoriatza. If you like caving and potholing there are caves like La Leze, in Eguino. The Aizkirri and Arrikrutz caves are amongst them, and the latter can be visited.

The highest peak
Experience the sensation whilst on top of the natural barrier separating Álava and Gipuzkoa. The ascent begins at the Otzaurte pass and passes through one of Europe's most extensive beech forests. The climb finishes on one of the most emblematic peaks in the Basque Country, the 1,528-metre Aizkorri.

baltzisketa and Ataun are the two gateways to the Aralar Natural Park. This is one of the Basque Country's major highlands in terms of area, altitude, land use and natural resources, and also one of the most frequented due to the mountains and their location in relation to urban areas. Framed by the Goierri and Tolosaldea districts it is a benchmark landscape and includes the iconic Txindoki peak.

The Aralar Natural Park
The setting is ideal for collecting mushrooms, exploring a caserio, tasting Idiazabal Cheese, pouring cider in a family cider house, doing some mountain biking or horseback riding and seeing megalithic remains: around thirty dolmens, mounds, monoliths, cave and outdoor sites, and two cromlechs are some of the sites visitors can see... The Barandiarán Museum in Ataun is wellworth visiting too, and is close-by to all these sites.
Why not try the challenge of climbing Txindoki, our little Matterhorn. You will be interested to know that there are several marked Grand and Short Tour mountaineering itineraries and pathways connecting areas with recreational and leisure facilities. The Parketxea at the Lizarrusti Pass consists of an information centre a hostel and a restaurant.

There are 2,300 plants from all the continents: bananas from Ethiopia, oaks from Costa Rica, roses, irises... The highlight is the annual Flower Fair where you can buy species from all over the world. You can see the endangered plants of the Basque Country in a specially conditioned area next to the Iturraran caserío (farm).

Pagoeta Less than 8 kilometres from Zarautz a unique kind of landscape opens before you, with its centre at Mount Pagoeta, which towers over the villages of Aia and Laurgain (Gipuzkoa). The Pagoeta Natural Park resides as both an educational and recreational centre. A “nature school" and the Environmental Interpretation Centre make up the information facilities of the Parketxe Iturraran. The ethnographic exhibits on life in the caserios and the nearby botanical gardens are fascinating. Another of the symbols of Pagoeta is the Agorregi smithy, from the early fifteenth century, which demonstrates how iron was worked using charcoal produced from local beech and oak in the days before

steel blast furnaces. In this park you can also see refridgerators that show ancient cooling techniques based on storage of winter snow.

Aiako Harria Natural Park
This enclave of rare beauty is located in the foothills of the Pyrenees, in the eastern reaches of Gipuzkoa. The three main peaks are: Irumugarrieta, Txurrumurru and Erroilbide, known as the Tres Coronas (Three Crowns), Las Batallas (the Battles) or Cara de Napoleón (Napoleon's Face). You can reach them by several well-marked routes. From Aiako Harria you can see Txingudi Bay, with the towns of Hondarribia, Irún and Hendaya; Mount Jaizkibel and the Oiartzun Valley. This rock outcrop also contains the Aiztondo Gorge, which has a waterfall with a 100-metre drop.

The prehistoric inhabitants and Romans mined iron and silver
Within the rock mass of the Aiako Harria there are dozens of mining shafts and galleries. In the Arditurri (Oiartzun) mine the Natural Park Interpretation Centre makes an interesting visit. The route to the old mines takes you along the Arditurri Greenway. The former mine laboratory is currently the Park Interpretation Centre and
enables you to access the mining that took place from Roman times until 1984. And if you are interested in prehistoric sites there are various caves in Aizpitarte. For those that are curious, the proximity to the French border explains why military engineers fortified some of the mountain ridges of the area now devoted to the Natural Park.

f you love trekking you have come to the right place. Valderejo, between Álava and Burgos, is a broad valley surrounded by steep hillsides and lots of trails, most notably the beautiful Purón River Gorge, the Park's scenic gem.
TOP Along with a variety of fauna and flora, visitors can also see deers, foxes and bobcats, as well as the Basque Country's biggest colony of griffon vultures. In Lalastra, the heart of Valderejo, the Parketxe or Reception Centre of the Park provides information on routes and services while the Rural Interpretation Centre with displays on the history and customs of the valley.

31 kilometres from VitoriaGasteiz, the Izki Natural Park is a broad valley formed by the river Izki and surrounded by mountains, the highest being Mount Kapildui. You are in one of the most remote corners of Álava, ideal for mushroom picking and excursions on foot, bike or horseback. Izki has the largest Pyrenean Oak reserve in Europe and most of the birch forest of Álava. From Korres you can cross the Izki Gorge to reach Bujanda. If you climb to the Virgen de la Peña Chapel, you will be able to see the spectacular Izki Ravine and enjoy the facilities of the family-friendly recreation area.

You will find the "gobas" (hermit caves used for prayer) of Laño, Faido and Marquínez fascinating, as well as the cave chapel carved out of the living Muela rock in San Román de Campezo. The gorges and crags of Arluzea and the town of Peñacerrada, which conserves remains of its wall, are also worth a visit.

Further south you can get to the La Rioja Balcony by the road that crosses the Herrera Pass, and see the vineyards, wineries and villages of Rioja Alavesa. If you play golf, you have access to two links, one of them, Urturi, designed by the great Severiano Ballesteros himself. The Parketxe at Korres will be happy to inform you about Izki's routes and features.

The orthinological appeal the Basque Country is maintained throughout the year with different species depending on the season. A good example is the Ullibarri-Gamboa Reservoir, where you can visit the Mendixur Orthinological Park. Here, all kinds of birds will cross your path during your walk. Did you know that in the Valderejo Natural Park, located on the western side of Araba/ Álava, you can find the longest colony of griffon vulture in the Basque Country? Here, in a semicircular valley of more than 1,200 hectares, you will also find golden
eagles and peregrine falcons nesting. In the gorge of the river Purón you can see the European Dipper in the wild. And if you value quiet places to enjoy the sounds of the birds, the Izki Natural Park, in the Araba/Álava Mountains, is the place for you. The area between the Toloño, Cantabria and Codés ranges marks a sharp difference between extensive forest areas and the vineyards of the Rioja Alavesa in the Ebro Valley.

Winter and spring are the best times to see birdlife in the Basque Country South of the Basque Country, the Rioja Alavesa spreads its extensive landscape of vineyards, and hidden amongst them a pleasant surprise: the Laguardia Lagoons.

This is a wetland composed of three natural and one artificial lake, El Prao de la Paul, where the only observatory of the district is located. This area is a common habitat of species such as starlings, which announce the coming of autumn. Amongst native birds you can find mallards, and purple and grey herons. The largest number of birds gathers from September to March. Back in Gipuzkoa, the Plaiaundi Ecological Park lies between the Bidasoa River and the Jaizubia river bed. It has a view of the Txingudi Bay, close to the town of IrĂşn. Since it is an obligatory migratory route you will find a variety of waterfowl. Go to Txingudi to see herons and spoonbills, which co-exist with species like the peregrine falcon.

The Urdaibai Bird Center, in GautegizArteaga, is a research and dissemination centre that studies birds and their habitats to obtain management methods aimed at the protection of wildlife and nature in general. The centre is also an observatory, and tracks the more than 200 species that transit the Biosphere Reserve each year during migration.

he west coast of Gipuzkoa gives you the opportunity to embark on a fascinating adventure, deciphering the reading of landscapes, rocks and fossils. We are talking about the flysch, a succession of sedimentary strata that exhibits millions of years of the geological history of the earth. This is the Basque Coast Geopark, that will introduce you to fascinating unknown worlds.

The rock strata you will see between Mutriku, Deba and Zumaia, have been uncovered due to constant wave action. Their unique value is due to one particular feature: the sequence of the flysch strata forms a near-continuous series embracing about 60 million years. They have recorded major events and cataclysmic changes, including the last mass global extinction, and thus several strata are international geological standards for dating certain events in the pre-history of the planet.

THE WAVE ROUTE
The beaches of Sopelana, Bakio, Laga, Zarautz and Zurriola, the latter practically in downtown San Sebastián, are ideal for beginners. A combination of left and right hand breaks in Bakio, short but intense waves in Laga, 3 kilometres of beach in Zarautz or tube waves like those at Zurriola are awaiting you. Seemingly impossibly high waves and a high quality tube run over the rocky bottom: this is territory earmarked for experienced experts only.
Waves like La Salvaje (the Savage) (between Getxo and Sopelana), known for its right hand break with various peaks, are amongst the most extreme experiences in the sport. The Spot at Meñakoz (Sopelana/Barrika), of worldwide fame, will show you what it's like when a 6-metre wave breaks against a cliff face. Adrenaline on demand. If you are a lover of tube breaks then Orrua (Getaria) is a must for the highest quality waves on the coast of Gipuzkoa, or Mundaka, known worldwide for its perfect, capricious left hand break which only appears during the colder seasons.
You don't even need to be a surfer; just sit and watch. You'll enjoy the exciting sessions offered by surfing greats and the spectacular waves of the Cantabrian Sea. Waves over 6 meters high, often reaching 10 meters, arrive when you least expect them. Located at the entrance to the Port of Bilbao, Punta Galea can offer waves up to 6 metres. Those entering the Mundaka Estuary, in Meñakoz Bay (between Sopelana and Barrika), those at Sorgin Zulo, in Deba, or Roca Puta (between Zarautz and Getaria) aslo reach this height. The waves at Izaro, off Bermeo, will surprise you with its magnificent heights, often reaching 10 metres. If you prefer to watch as the tow-in boards ride the waves, put Akiti and Belharra on your itinerary. You can find the former huddled behind La Concha Bay, and the latter, considered Europe's biggest surfable wave, at Hendaia.

The Mundaka Estuary is host to this prestigious wave with an attitude. It is a long wave with a dramatic tube and can reach a height of 4 metres. It only appears in autumn and winter and when it does only lasts three hours. If you fail to catch it you always have point breaks like the Arribolas, at Cape Matxitxako.
Another option is to watch the real surfers in action. Visit the beaches of Sopelana and Zarautz during one of the major international competitions hosted along the Basque Coast throughout the year, such as the world championship event at Zarautz.
If you like wild seascapes, the Cantabrian Sea often puts on a good show. To enjoy it, head along the coast by car or bus. The views from the road are really spectacular.

The Coastal Route of the Camino de Santiago begins at Hondarribia

The Coastal Route made up of 8 stages, will reveal the maritime aspects of the Basque Country. If you want to find hidden traces of the cult of St. James this the route for you. Old roads, such as the one between Zarautz and Getaria, superb medieval bridges, and prehistoric caves like Santimamiñe amongst others will constantly delight you. But the maritime atmosphere is also imbued with mountain air. San Sebastián is reached from Mount Jaizkibel. Leaving Gipuzcoa, you enter the heart of the Urdaibai Nature Reserve, where the “Ruta Juradera” (with churches where court sessions were held) pays homage to the ancient lords of Biscay. The Santiago Cathedral welcomes you to Bilbao, from where you head for Portugalete to see the Vizcaya Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage site, or the medieval La Muza Bridge in Balmaseda, a National Heritage site.

Álava and Gipuzkoa, the main scene
of the Inland Route The Inland Route, following what has been the most important communication route with the north ever since Roman times, takes you through a wide variety of landscapes of great cultural and social interest. In only seven stages totaling around 200 kilometres you will go from valleys to lush forests, from the coast to farmlands. The strong links of Irun with Saint James are evident from the beginning of the trip. Astigarraga is a good place to have a bite to eat to keep up your strength. On the way the historic centres of the bigger towns like Tolosa, Segura, Ordizia and Salvatierra await you. Reaching Vitoria-Gasteiz you will be able to see the foundations of the Santa María Cathedral and the Armentia Basilica. Following the Zadorra River and the vineyards of the Rioja Alavesa bathed by the waters of the Ebro, you will arrive at Salinillas de Buradón, where you can join the French Route.

The routes known as Greenways are the result of the decision to recover the cultural, historical and practical resources of Basque railways that had fallen into disuse. The Basque Country offers these trails through various routes created with the intention of bringing the benefits of ecotourism to those who use them
One of the best known can be found at the boundary between Álava and Gipuzkoa and runs along the route of the old Vasco-Navarre Railway, that begins from the Arlabán Pass (between Álava and Gipuzkoa) and finishes at Estella. This route takes in some solitary parts of the Izki Natural Park in the Álava Mountains and enables you to see Vitoria-Gasteiz from a different perspective. In the Basque Country the mountain meets the sea offering visitors some wonderful scenery. In this respect the Aiako Harria are the starting point for one of the most spectacular routes in Gipuzkoa. On the coast you can reach the port of Pasaia along a trail following the Oiartzun River. The Bidasoa Greenway will take you on a spectacular trail through trees and rich vegetation. The Arditurri Greenway, which starts at Pasai Antxo and follows the Oiartzun River, is a route that enables you explore mine shafts and galleries. The Plazaola-Leitzaran Greenway is an attractive route that begins in Andoain and runs through oak and beech forests in the Leitzaran Valley, between Gipuzkoa and Navarre.

The Mutiloa-Ormaiztegi trail is a beautiful scenic route that runs along mountain slopes. It begins at the Barnaola Caserío in Mutiloa. The Urola Greenway, from Zumarraga to Azpeitia, is one of the most interesting: it takes us to the Basque Railway Museum, the Sanctuary of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the Urola River Gorge and offers the ultimate luxury: the industrial iron culture through the great steel mills and forges of old. In Biscay you will find more trails running through the Encartaciones, Montes de Hierro and Atxuri districts. The Montes de Hierro Greenway is a journey through the heart of the history of Biscay. It starts from the Traslaviña Railway Station (Arcentales) and takes us into the Ironworks Route. The Atxuri Greenway starts in Mungía and provides a pleasant ride open to the valley of the Butrón River.
The Arrazola Greenway, in the Durango district, links Arrazola and Apatamonasterio (Atxondo). Ollargan, probably the oldest caserío in Biscay, is located here too, as well as an 18th century water mill and the San Roque Chapel. At the end of the route you will see the remains of blast furnaces and the mining town of the old iron and copper mines.

You can also do potholing and caving in the chasms, caves and faults which abound this part of the Basque Country. For something different in the Basque Country you can try canyoning and gorge walking. The Aguake ravine, that of Arritzaga - considered one of the best in Gipuzkoa - or the canyon-cave of La Leze are ideal places to enjoy the descent. And if you want something to test your nerves try the Irusta waterfall ... its 120 metres will leave you open-mouthed. All this and much more because... the adventure goes on.
