Visiting a glacier is a journey full of adventures, it is one of those things to be done at least once in life. The mystery of Patagonia, the freezing places that remind us of the scenery of a different planet. The destination is beautiful and there are many options to make this trip an unbeatable expedition.
También vamos a visitar el hermoso volcán de Agua, ubicado en Guatemala, un destino que los guatemaltecos acostumbran en el final del año como parte de las vacaciones y espacios para compartir al aire libre. Las vistas desde el volcán y los amaneceres sobre las nubes son indescriptibles.
As well, we will visit the beautiful Agua volcano, located in Guatemala. It is a destination that Guatemalans usually visit at the end of the year as part of their vacation and they carry out activities outdoors. The views from this volcano and the sunsets over the clouds are speechless.

Una bocanada de aire glaciar nos recorre el cuerpo. El azul profundo del océano Antártico y el celeste de los imponentes bloques de hielo se convierten en una escena sacada de otro planeta. Nos encontramos frente a uno de los más importantes e imponentes glaciares, el Perito Moreno, en la Patagonia argentina.
A puff of glacier air goes through our body. The deep blue of the Antarctic Ocean and the azure color of the magnificent blocks of ice that make this a scene of another world. We are located in front of one of the most important and impressive glaciers, Perito Moreno, in Patagonia, Argentina.

It is located in Antarctica; it is a mystery of ice that beats in the south of the world.
Su singular forma nos recuerda escenas extra terrenales, con picos centellantes al contacto con la luz del sol. Son las 10a.m. y el barco recorre los alrededores para que los turistas podamos experimentar la belleza del glaciar.
Its particular shape reminds us of places out of this world, with its sparkling peaks making contact with the light of the Sun. It is 10 am and the ship travels around so that tourists can experience the beauty of the glacier.
Ubicado a 85 kilómetros del centro de la ciudad del Calafate, dentro del Parque Nacional de Glaciares, es un área protegida con un sistema de miradores espectaculares que permiten la inmersión del visitante en tal escena natural.
It is located 85 kilometers away from El Calafate downtown, within the National Park of Glaciers. It is protected area with a system of lookout points that welcome the visitors in such a natural scene.

La experiencia de la visita The experience of the visit La salida alrededor de las 8am. desde el hotel, marca el inicio de la aventura. Se comienza bordeando la Bahía Redonda del Lago Argentino desde donde se divisa tan hermosa, la Isla Solitaria. Desde ahí se recorre una parte de la Patagonia desde donde se divisa el Cerro Comisión o de Los Elefantes, el río Centinela, el Cerro Frías. Al cruzar el río Mitré, se accede al Parque Nacional de los Glaciares.
Leaving the hotel around 8:00 a.m., that is where the adventure starts off. The trip starts sailing along Redonda Bay of Argentino Lake from where one can appreciate the so beautiful, Solitaria Island. From there, one visits part of Patagonia from where one can observe the Cerro Comisión or Los Elefantes hill, Centinela river, Frías hill. When crossing the Mitré river, that is the access to the National Park of Glaciers.
Se comienza desde este punto un trayecto de 35 kilómetros para apreciar la flora del lugar, enormes árboles de todo tipo. Posterior a ello, se puede apreciar La Curva de los Suspiros en donde los visitantes gustan de tomar muchas fotografías con semejante escenario del glaciar.
The trip starts here and it takes 35 kilometers where the flora of the location could be appreciated, huge trees of all types. After that, La Curva de los Suspiros could be contemplated and visitors love taking pictures with sceneries that resemble to a glacier.
Innumerables pasarelas y balcones que permiten apreciar desde diversas perspectivas la majestuosidad del Perito Moreno. En este punto, ya ubicados muy cerca de la pared de hielo, los visitantes pueden apreciar los desprendimientos tan esperados, verlos flotar tan maravillosamente es un nuevo espectáculo.
Countless passages and balconies allow the appreciation from several perspectives the majesty of Perito Moreno. At this point, located close to the iced wall, the visitors could see the spaced-out loosening of iced blocks, and how they float marvelously. It is a new spectacle.

Los miradores, una extraordinaria travesía The viewpoints, an extraordinary journey El Parque Nacional de los Glaciares es un área protegida que contiene una serie de miradores, se bajan los escalones para llegar al primer mirador. Un frío intenso se apodera del cuerpo, por lo que es recomendable utilizar ropa térmica apropiada para que la experiencia sea confortable.
The National Park of Glaciers is a protected area that contains a group of viewpoints. One has to walk down the trail to go to the first viewpoint. An intense coldness wraps our bodies, therefore, the recommendation is to wear appropriate thermal clothing for the experience to be comfortable.
Un sonido de bloques resquebrajándose nos sorprende, aunque es una cosa normal dentro del glaciar por los desprendimientos naturales, muestra también del impacto del cambio climático. Los guías explican paso a paso la historia del glaciar.
A sound of ice floes surprises us, even though it is a usual activity that happens within the glacier because of the natural detachments. It is also a sample of the impact of global warming. The guides explain the history of the glacier thoroughly.

Each viewpoint gives us a new fascinating perspective and the visitor discovers a new one in each step given.

Muy importante tomar en cuenta que las pasarelas son pequeñas y hay escalones por lo que es no apto para personas con movilidad reducida. Sin embargo, es posible que puedan acceder fácilmente a los miradores para apreciar el glaciar. It is very important to take into account that the sidewalks are small and the stairs are not suitable for people with limited walking ability. However, it is possible for them to access the viewpoints easily to appreciate the glacier.

Clima en el Perito Moreno Weather in Perito Moreno La tierra prácticamente no tiene calor aquí, debido a que los rayos solares son reflejados casi enteramente por el hielo. Con una temperatura promedio de -20°, los vientos descontrolados en la Antártida alcanzan velocidades de 320 k/h.
Earth pretty much is not warm here due to the fact that the solar rays are reflected almost entirely by the ice. The temperature, in average is 20°, and the winds may be out of control in Antarctica and they may reach 320 k/h.
Guantes, gorros, ropa térmica son importantes para que la travesía pueda disfrutarse de principio a fin.
Mittens, woolen caps, thermal clothing are important for this journey so one can enjoy it from beginning to end.

El Calafate, de los pueblos al final del mundo El Calafate, town by the edge of the world Unas casitas en el valle, muy llamativo entre las montañas, techos sencillos y paredes de madera que nos recuerdan pueblitos de cuento.
Little houses in the valley; very appealing within the mountains, simple roofs and wooden walls…they remind us of a town taken from a fairy tale.
Pero, ¿de dónde proviene el nombre? El Calafate es un arbusto que entre sus espinas brotan unos frutos azules muy deliciosos utilizados para hacer postres y pasteles. Los calafates crecen en los valles chilenos y argentinos de la Patagonia y también es un arbusto que se utiliza con fines medicinales, así como para decoración entre otros. La ciudad fue bautizada con el nombre de tan bondadoso arbusto y los locatarios tienen un dicho muy famoso “quien come calafate, regresa por más”.
But, where does this name come from? El Calafate is a shrub that its thorns hold blue fruits that are very delicious and utilized to make desserts and cakes. This shrub is grown in Chile and Argentina in Patagonia and it is a used as a medicinal plant, and for decoration, as well. The city was called with the name of this generous bush and the people from the locality have a famous saying: “he who eats calafate, comes back for more”.

El Calafate city has many little stores of souvenirs so that the visitor could take a piece of memory from here. Some local cafeterias and restaurants prepare delicious food and there is a rich offer of tour guides.

¿Cómo llegar? How to get here?
A El Calafate se puede llegar vía terrestre o por avión. La vía terrestre es bastante inhóspita y arriesgada por lo que se recomienda usar la vía aérea que dura 3 horas el viaje. Vía bus, debes recorrer desde Buenos Aires, una extensión de 2,700 kilómetros, traducidos en 40 horas de camino para los que quieren una aventura total.
To El Calafate one could get there by ground of plane. Ground could be wild and risky, that is why it is recommended to go by plane and the flight takes three hours. By bus, you must go through Buenos Aires, the extension is 2,700 kilometers, that is 40 hours of travel; this is for those who want a whole adventure.
El aeropuerto y el centro de El Calafate se distancian por 22 kilómetros con varias opciones:
Taxi: Se toma en la salida del aeropuerto, una opción muy recomendada. El costo es de unos U$15.00.
Bus: La compañía VesPatagonia realiza esta ruta por U$7.50 de ida y vuelta. Es bastante seguro y acogedor.
The airport and El Calafate downtown have a distance of 22 kilometers with several options:
Cab: It is taken outside the airport; it is a recommended option. The cost is around $15.00.
Bus: VesPatagonia company has a round-trip option for
US$7.50. It is quite safe and comfortable.

¿Dónde me hospedo?
Where could I spend the night? Hay opciones muy recomendables en los pequeños hoteles de la pequeña ciudad. Algunos situados a escasos metros de la estación del bus. Puedes hospedarte por unos U$70.00 una habitación muy acogedora para 2 personas con desayuno incluido. Algunos más sencillos por U$50.00 para dos personas sin incluir el desayuno.
There are very recommendable small hotels in this tiny city. There are some located just few feet away from the bus station. You could stay at some for US$70 in a comfortable room for two, breakfast included. Some simpler ones for US$50 for two, no breakfast included.

Existen múltiples opciones turísticas para apreciar al Perito Moreno. El Safari Náutico es una navegación de una hora frente a la pared Sur del Glaciar, básicamente sólo con estas opciones, podrías apreciar esta pared a un costo de U$37.00 por persona. Otra navegación ofrece la vista de la pared del norte a un precio similar. Por U$120.00 puedes tener la experiencia Glaciares Gourmet. Es un crucero de día entero visitando el glaciar y explorando su belleza natural. El viaje incluye almuerzo.
There are multiple tourist options to appreciate Perito Moreno. Safari Nautico is a navigation of one hour in front of the wall Sur Del Glaciar, basically only with these options, you could see the wall for US37.00 per person. A different cruise offers the visit of North wall for a similar fee. For U$120.00 you could have the experience of Gourmet Glaciers. It is a one-day cruise visiting the glacier and exploring its natural beauty. The trip includes lunch.

Restaurante en el Perito Moreno Restaurants in Perito Moreno En el área de las pasarelas, encuentras un pequeño bar para tomar una bebida caliente o bien alentar tu visita con un trago bien preparado. Puedes comer alguna refacción ligera para retomar las fuerzas. Dentro del mismo sitio se encuentra un restaurante para almorzar menús completos.
The area of the sidewalks, small bars may be found to drink a hot drink or encourage your visit with a well-prepared drink. You may have a light snack to get more energy. At this location, you may go to a restaurant that offers lunch menus.

El Hunahpú o Volcán de Agua Guatemala
Hunahpú or Agua Volcano Guatemala
El frío del mes de diciembre es la excusa perfecta de los guatemaltecos para el ascenso de volcanes. Jóvenes y aventureros, adultos y hasta adolescentes se encaminan a expediciones de este tipo como una forma tradicional de utilizar las vacaciones y hacer deporte al aire libre en el país. Uno de los volcanes preferidos para escalar es el volcán de Agua, un coloso de 3,766 metros sobre el nivel del mar, ubicado en la comunidad de Santa María de Jesús, muy cerca de Antigua Guatemala. Conocido por los mayas como Hunahpú, nombre mitológico del Popol Vuh o libro sagrado de los mayas, es el nombre del hermano de Ixbalanqué, hijo del dios Hun-Hunahpú e Ixquic.

El nombre español del volcán proviene de una corriente muy fuerte de agua y lodo que bajó en el año 1541 debido a varios días de tormenta. Esta corriente destruyó el segundo asentamiento de la capital de Guatemala, que había sido establecido en Ciudad Vieja. La historia de este desastre fue el tema de la novela del siglo XIX La hija del Adelantado del escritor guatemalteco José Milla y Vidaurre. Otras historias dicen que el volcán habría estado activo hasta la llegada de Pedro de Alvarado, pero que desde entonces ya no tuvo más actividad.

The cold month of December is the perfect reason for Guatemalans to hike up volcanoes. Youth and travelers, adults and even teens head to the expeditions of this type as a traditional way of spending vacation and practice sports outdoors within the country. One of the most preferred volcanoes to hike up is Agua Volcano. It is a colossus of 3,766 meters over the level of the sea. It is located in the community Santa María de Jesús, very close to Antigua Guatemala. Mayans know it as Hunahpú, mythological name from Popol Vuh, Mayan sacred book. It is the name of Ixbalanqué’s brother, son of god Hun-Hunahpú and Ixquic.
The Spanish name given to the volcano was originated by a big water current and mud that came down from the volcano itself in 1541 because of several days of storm. This water current destroyed the second settlement of Guatemala City had had been established in Ciudad Vieja. This disaster was the inspiration for José Milla y Vidaurre, Guatemalan writer, and his novel in the 19th Century, The Daughter of the City Leader, La Hija del Adelantado. Other stories tell that the volcano could have been active until Pedro de Alvarado’s arrival, but since then, no more activity was observed.

Muy cerca del volcán de Agua están muy visibles el volcán de Fuego, que se mantiene activo y que hace apenas un año, causó una de los más fuertes desastres en los poblados más cercados a sus faldas con saldos mortales. El volcán Acatenango, inactivo, es otro de los volcanes cercanos que juntos forman paisajes hermosos, razón por la que a Guatemala se le conoce como la tierra de los volcanes.
Very close to the Agua Volcano, there other volcanoes very visible, Fuego Volcano. It keeps itself active and just a year ago caused one of the most significant disasters to the one of the closest settlements in its foothills. Many deaths were counted. Acatenango volcano, inactive, is one of the closest volcanoes that give shape to these beautiful landscapes. This is the reason why Guatemala is known as the land of volcanoes.

El ascenso al volcán de Agua Climbing up to Agua Volcano El pueblecito de Santa María de Jesús es uno de los muchos pueblos pintorescos de Sacatepéquez, con gente muy amable en cada rincón. Se llega apena a 20 minutos de la gran ciudad colonial Antigua Guatemala. Con muchos sembradillos de maíz, flores silvestres y casitas sencillas hechas todavía de adobe o barro, el turista se adentra en un camino que lo lleva a las faldas del volcán. Comienza la aventura y mientras se asciende, el sonido de la ciudad se aleja y pierde entre los árboles. Algunos grupos avanzan a mayor velocidad, pero el consejo es mantener un ritmo para poder ascender sin contratiempos. Grupos de locatarios se encargan de ofrecerte guías y acompañamiento, en el trayecto también encuentras mini tienditas improvisadas con algunos enseres, chucherías, agua y frutas para recuperar las fuerzas. En una serie de angostos caminos, recorridas tres cuartas partes del trayecto, el bosque espeso se convierte en una serie de pajonales y bosque abierto de pinos que es muy característico de las alturas. Ya hemos ascendido cerca de 3 horas y estamos por alcanzar la cúspide del volcán. La temperatura es baja en el mes de diciembre y los grupos deben mantenerse juntos. Los vientos pueden ser fuertes y la ropa utilizada y equipo deben ser los adecuados.

Santa María de Jesús is one of the many colorful villages in Sacatepéquez and their people are very kind in every corner. From the great colonial city, Antigua Guatemala, it takes only twenty minutes to be by the foothills of the volcano. There are many corn fields, wild flowers and simple little houses built with adobe or clay. The tourist starts walking and gets on the way to the foothills of the volcano. The adventure starts and while climbing up, the sound of the city becomes distant and it gets lost within the trees. Some people climb up very fast. However, the best advice is to keep an even pace to be able to climb without any issues. Groups of people from this town offer guides and escorting. Along the path, you may find mini stores with some items, snacks, water and fruit to recover energy. There is a group of narrow trails. Once you have gone through 75% of the climbing, the forest gets thicker and there are lots of scrublands and a wide open pine forest which is very proper and characteristic of these heights. Three hours after starting the journey and close to reaching the crater of the volcano, the temperatures are low in the month of December and groups of people should stay together. Winds could be strong; clothing and equipment must be proper for this journey.

Las vistas desde el volcán Views from the volcano
Nada se compara a la vista de un amanecer en la cúspide el volcán. Estamos en la oscuridad de la madrugada y llegando cerca de las 6am, los rayos del sol comienzan a asomarse tímidos y titubeantes entre las nubes que asemejan a una alfombra blanca de algodón. Los picos de los otros volcanes se pueden distinguir, y la escena es una exquisitez para los fotógrafos profesionales o para cualquiera que desee conservar este momento.
