HOW TID KEEPS THE LIGHTS ON
Local control in action during the August 2020 heatwave As a community-owned utility, TID exists to provide its customers with safe, reliable and affordable electric power and irrigation water. TID is responsible for generating and supplying energy to over 101,000 customer accounts within a 662 square-mile area. The August heatwave illustrated the benefits of public power and TID’s local control as a community-owned utility. In August, California experienced a period of excessively hot temperatures that created a strain on generation resources, while wildfires traumatized communities throughout the state. TID made preparations to adjust its operations and took steps to minimize the impact to the local power grid. All around the state, energy consumers

experienced blackouts, and while TID encouraged its customers to participate in energy conservation efforts, TID customers were not impacted by imposed rolling blackouts due to TID’s status as a balancing authority. As a balancing authority, TID is responsible for ensuring it can generate and supply energy to continuously meet the needs of its customers. TID supports its customers’ power needs by maintaining a diverse portfolio that includes wind, solar, natural gas, hydroelectric and more. TID’s ability to keep the lights on during ordinary and extreme times – delivering reliable electric supply to its customers year-round, is just one example of the many benefits of being a community-owned utility. Together, We Are TID.
