The holiday season is approaching and for many people that means life is about to get really busy. This year will look and feel more like normal as we do our shopping, go to holiday events and gather with friends and family. With things getting back to normal, we want to support the locally owned businesses and organizations that make the 209 such a special place to live, especially during the holiday season. In this inaugural issue of 209 Holiday, we have compiled 25 different events happening in the 209 region that are guaranteed to amp up the Christmas spirit. We have also listed some great spots in the 209 to lace up your skates and hit the ice for some wintertime fun. Also, in this issue we explore the holiday happenings in Sutter Creek in Amador County. The charming town, called the “Jewel of the Motherlode” turns into a magical place during the holidays. Those looking for gift ideas will be pleased with our gift guide with ideas coming from all over the 209 region. Thank you for your continued support and we hope you enjoy this first issue of 209 Holiday.

ce skating is synonymous with the holiday season and is a winter activity almost everyone can enjoy, no matter their skill level. Luckily for 209 residents, there are plenty of places throughout the area code where they can lace up and hit the ice this year.

When winter hits, RAM Farms in Turlock transforms from a festive fall pumpkin patch into Fields of Ice, where visitors of all ages can take to the rink under a large, shaded canopy. Event space next to the rink makes this location perfect for large groups celebrating office holiday parties or winter birthdays, and after skating visitors can pick out a Christmas tree. Fields of Ice in Turlock will be open to the public starting Nov. 19. LONG BARN LODGE ICE SKATING RINK

CURRY VILLAGE ICE SKATING RINK

25957 Long Barn Rd., Long Barn

Southside Drive, Yosemite Valley

The Long Barn Lodge & Event Center is a beautiful getaway in the heart of the Stanislaus National Forest, offering wedding rentals through the warmer months and ice skating in the winter. The ice skating rink at Long Barn Lodge looks like it came straight out of a Hallmark movie, complete with Christmas lights and, usually, snow on the roof. The rink is just 66 miles from Modesto or 79 miles away from Stockton, making this getaway perfect for a day trip with the family. The ice skating rink at Long Barn Lodge will be open from Nov. 13, to Feb. 27, 2022. Public skating is available from 10 a.n. To 9 p.m. Monday through Sunday. For more information, call 209-586-3533.

It doesn’t get more picturesque than the Curry Village Ice Skating Rink, nestled in the middle of Yosemite National Park with views of Half Dome. The scenic surroundings make any slips while skating worth it, and when you’re done dancing around the ice you can stop in for a slice of pizza in Curry Village or relax by a warm fire pit. Skaters have taken to the ice in Curry Village since 1928, and after COVID closures last year, the rink will once again open to the public on Nov. 12. Visitors can purchase ice skating tickets at the Curry Village Tour & Activity Desk adjacent to the Registration Office. For more information, call 209-372-8333.

OAK PARK ICE RINK 3545 Alvarado Ave., Stockton Open since 1970, Oak Park Ice Rink in Stockton has provided family fun on skates for decades. Countless 209 residents have learned to ice skate on this very rink, and it also serves as the practice arena for the city’s professional hockey team, the Stockton Heat. This rink is open year round but is closed in July for ice maintenance, meaning you can enjoy the ice during every season. The Oak Park Ice Rink is open from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, 2:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Thursdays, 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

The town’s first-ever ice rink is completely community-funded, and that monetary help allowed Old Town Atwater to provide thousands of local students the opportunity to skate for free. The brand new ice rink opened to the public Nov. 1 and will remain open through Jan. 16, 2022. The hours of operation are 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For more information, visit Old Town Atwater on Facebook. 209MAGAZINE.COM

oxide or titanium oxide on the ingredients list. What SPF should I purchase? Sun protection factor (SPF) refers to how much protection is offered against UVB. An SPF15 screens out 93% of the sun’s UVB rays, while SPF30 protects against 97% and SPF50 against 98%. As a rule of thumb, protection equal or greater than SPF30 is adequate. It is very important that you do no forget to apply sunscreen to your nose, ears, around the eyes and lips. For your lips, you can purchase lip balms with at least an SPF30.

Amin Esfahani, MD With the holiday season around the corner many of us are planning a warm, sunny getaway. As you finalize your plans and make your vacation shopping list, one of the most important items that is often overlooked is the dermatologists’ best friend: “the sunscreen”. Since not all sunscreens are created equal, shopping for the “right” sunscreen can be challenging and at times even confusing. It is, therefore, worthwhile to take a few minutes to read about the best approach to sun protection and my answers to some of the most commonly asked questions. Sunlight contains ultraviolet radiation that can damage your skin. Simply stated, ultraviolet A (UVA) is responsible for tanning, wrinkling and premature aging, and ultraviolet B (UVB) causes sunburns. Both UVA and UVB can damage the skin and lead to skin cancer. As such, there is no such thing as a “safe” or “healthy” tan. What type of sunscreen should I use? The best approach is to select a “broad-spectrum” sunscreen. These products protect your skin against both UVA and UVB. Sunscreen product labels should generally inform you if the product is broad-spectrum. In addition, it is recommended that your sunscreen contain a “physical” barrier. These include zinc oxide or titanium oxide. Most sunscreen labels do NOT contain the phrase “physical barrier”. You need to look for zinc

How much sunscreen should I put on? While the exact amount depends on the size of the individual, as a rule of thumb, you can apply at least 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to cover your entire body and at least 1/4 teaspoon (nickel-sized amount) of sunscreen to cover your face. Do I need to reapply sunscreen? Sunscreen needs to be applied approximately 20-30 minutes before going out into the sun. It needs to be reapplied every 2 hours or any time you come out of the water, excessively sweat or towel off. There is no such thing as a “water-proof” or “sweat-proof” sunscreen. Even water-resistant sunscreens need to be reapplied after leaving water. Are there any other ways of protecting against the sun? Wearing protective clothing is a good way of avoiding excess sun exposure and sunburns.Sun glasses and widebrim hats can help significantly. Wide-brim hats should have at least 3 inches all the way around to shade not just the face and scalp but also the ears, neck, shoulders and upper back. Furthermore, some manufactures are now producing stylish sun protective clothing that can help protect your skin against ultraviolet radiation. Remember that tightly woven clothing (like denim) offer more ultraviolet protection than do loosely woven ones. Please keep in mind that since exposure to ultraviolet radiation is not always avoidable, it is very important to make sure you routinely self-examine your skin for atypical growths and follow up regularly with your dermatologist. We here at Lux Dermatology wish you a happy, safe, cool and shaded Holiday Season!

ALL THAT

By SABRA STAFFORD

I

t can be hard to shine in winter with the gray skies seemingly voiding out all color, but the right jewelry piece can banish away the blahs. Whether your winter plans involve a big shin-dig for New Year’s Eve, or a cozy brunch with friends, one way to add some sparkle and shine is with jewelry. Here are four trends that are destined to be eyecatching this winter.

CHANDELIER EARRINGS

COCKTAIL RINGS

Chandelier earrings, add a certain level of elegance to any outfit. Whether they fall mid-neckline or are shoulder-dusting, chandelier earrings compliment most face shapes and add an element of movement that draws the eyes upward. Styles can range from modernist sleek droplets to shimmery stacked jewels and add an aspect of drama.

This is one piece of jewelry that definitely makes a statement and that statement is: Notice me. Impactful, bold and often sparkly, cocktail rings are fun and reflective of personality. And they make it easy to elevate any outfit from casual to stylish.

PEARLS

STATEMENT BRACELET

Fashion trends come and go, but true classics like pearls never fade from style. Whether the style be demure pearl studs, stunning stacked chokers, or a simple string necklace of freshwater, cultured pearls, this gem is one for the ages and will add an element of style and sophistication to any outfit.

Why spend time trying to figure out which bracelets to stack together, when one statement bracelet will be just as impactful and looks effortlessly chic. From bejeweled to beaded to wood, the options are great for adding a touch of glamour to an outfit.

f you’ve ever found yourself watching one of those Hallmark Christmas movies and thought that you’d like to visit such a town, then cast your eyes toward Sutter Creek, where the charm and Christmas spirit is on full display during the holiday season. “Sutter Creek is an amazing destination all year long but it is a must visit during the holiday season,” said Karen Darrow, Sutter Creek’s City Clerk. “You can’t help but feel like you have come for the holidays when you are on Main Street. It is a picturesque backdrop of twinkling lights and decorations, an ideal setting for the shopping, dining and wine tasting that Sutter Creek is known so well for.” The town’s holiday season really kicks off on the Friday after Thanksgiving when visitors and locals alike are invited to ditch the chain stores and the Black Friday sales for Sutter Creek’s Plaid Friday. Those wearing plaid that day - be it a scarf, hat, sweater, socks or anything else - will get a discount from the participating downtown merchants. The support of Sutter Creek shops continues on Nov. 27 for Small Business Saturday. That sense of being in a Hallmark Christmas setting really amps up on Dec. 3 and Dec. 4, when Sutter Creek hosts the Old-fashioned Christmas Open House. The town’s historic streetscape is festooned with holiday magic and the stores beckon shoppers in with deals and unique wares and gift options. The restaurants will be open with special options for the day and the wine tasting rooms will be getting into the holiday spirit.

Sutter Creek is an amazing destination all year long but it is a must visit during the holiday season —Karen Darrow

This marks the 45th year that Sutter Creek has hosted the open house event. “Open House encompasses all the tradition and charm of an old fashion evening of Christmas shopping,” Darrow said. “Businesses are open late and offer Holiday refreshments.” In addition to the wine tasting rooms and restaurants, Sutter Creek has clothing boutiques, antique shops, home decor, a cheese shop, a furniture store, a gardening store and so many more. Dec. 3 also is the first night of the Street of Lights, which highlights different light displays throughout the Main Street area. People are invited to be dazzled by the view by either walking or driving. “This year the first night of the Street of Lights coincides with Open House so it should be even more magical than it already is,” Darrow said. At 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 10 and 11 Amador County Sheriff Redman and Sutter Creek Police Chief O’Connell will be serving hot chocolate at candy Cane Lane as part of the festivities.

For the entire month of December, Sutter Creek will be having a holiday light tour with residential and commercial light displays for locals and visitors to enjoy. Those feeling the Celtic call at Christmas will find it answered at the Sutter Creek Theater on Dec. 3 with The Fire’s Very Scottish Christmas show. The Scottish music trio will be joined by Scottish and Irish dancers for a night of celtic holiday fun. The Fire’s Very Scottish Christmas marks the band’s vocal debut, showcasing seasonal folk ballads dating back to the 1300s alongside beloved holiday favorites. The Fire features David Brewer on the Great Highland Bagpipe, internationally awarded Scottish fiddler Rebecca Lomnicky, and Adam Hendey on guitar, reed organ and vocals. The Fire’s Very Scottish Christmas show starts at 8 p.m. and doors open at 7 p.m. A COVID vaccination or negative test is required, as are masks. Tickets range from $23 to $27. For tickets or more information about the show visit www.suttercreektheater. com. Sonora’s own Black Irish Band will perform their Christmas Show at the Sutter Creek Theater from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 11. Doors open at 6 p.m. The foursome excels at Irish and Scottish, Italian, and American folk music with an assortment of original songs and traditional western ballads. A COVID vaccination or negative test is required, as are masks. Tickets range from $14 to $16. For tickets or more information about the show visit www.suttercreektheater.com.

Second Harvest of the Greater Valley Before the pandemic hit, food that flowed through the Second Harvest food bank warehouses in Manteca were reaching 35,000 individuals a month in an eight-county region. Those being helped ran the gamut from working families slammed by housing cost, struggling single parent households, the elderly on fixed income, families in crisis such as major medical bills and those without jobs. Then COVID-19 hit in March 2020 and the need went up 200 percent. Food being shipped out of the Vanderbilt Circle distribution center in the Manteca Industrial Park to roughly 100 food pantries throughout the region went from 230,000 pounds a week to 400,000 pounds a week. The food bank has been serving as the distribution center for large quantities of donated food from firms as well as items bought through monetary donations for a number of years for San Joaquin County as well six other counties as well — Merced, Tuolumne, Mariposa, Calaveras, Amador and Alpine. The Manteca-based food bank is among 200 similar operations nationwide affiliated with Feeding America.

Letters to Santa Charity The Letters to Santa Charity was originally the “wild” idea of Turlock resident and Modesto firefighter Justin Crone. The effort has grown exponentially since its beginning in 2009, with the charity helping over 2,200 local children last year at 16 schools throughout Stanislaus County. Through the program, in-need students are gifted with a new coat, shoes, socks, underwear, pants, a shirt and a toy, and a turkey dinner for their families. To sponsor a child, visit letterstosantacharity.com or donate via Venmo.

By KRISTINA HACKER

T

his holiday season many are ready and willing to once again host parties or get-togethers with friends and family. While many families have set traditions when it comes to holiday gatherings, it can be fun to switch it up with something new. Below are just a few different party ideas to liven up your holiday celebrations.

INTERNATIONAL CELEBRATION Most families have holiday traditions and many come from their ancestral heritage. Whether it’s tamales on Christmas Eve, sweet bread on St. Lucia Day or a full Italian cuisine spread on New Year’s Day, these traditions have been brought to the U.S. and continued through generations. While paying homage to your family history is admirable, it can be fun to learn more about other cultures through their holiday traditions. Instead of the regular holiday potluck, have each family member pick a different country from around the world and bring a food item from that country and share information on their holiday traditions. This type of party can be an elegant affair for a friends gathering or more of a fun learning experience for a family party. INTERNATIONAL CELEBRATION Enjoy the flavors of the world with some drinks and food that represent different parts of the globe. Not sure what to serve? Try an Irish Coffee and French Crepes. Irish Coffee 11/3 oz Irish whiskey, 1 oz fresh cream, 1 tsp. brown sugar, 22/3 oz hot coffee. Heat the coffee, whiskey and sugar; do not boil. Pour into glass and top with cream; serve hot.

French Crepes 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon white sugar ¼ teaspoon salt 3 eggs 2 cups milk 2 tablespoons butter, melted Sift together flour, sugar and salt; set aside. In a large bowl, beat eggs and milk together with an electric mixer. Beat in flour mixture until smooth; stir in melted butter. Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 2 tablespoons for each crepe. Tip and rotate pan to spread batter as thinly as possible. Brown on both sides and serve hot. Serve with butter, powdered sugar or fresh fruit.

TRADITIONAL TREE TRIMMING Christmas trees are the centerpieces of many homes during the holidays. The majestic pine, fir or spruce is often decorated with both antique ornaments and new store-bought finds. Instead of hauling out the boxes of tree decorations this year, consider hosting a tree trimming party. At this party all ornaments will be made together. Consider stringing popcorn, making paper snowflake chains and even gingerbread cookie decorations, however, the use of traditional candles should be replaced with the safer electric lights.

Sugar Cookie Frosting 4 cups confectioners’ sugar ½ cup shortening 5 tablespoons milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract food coloring (Optional)

TRADITIONAL TREE TRIMMING Go with the classics for this party and serve up eggnog and sugar cookies.

In a large bowl, cream together the confectioners’ sugar and shortening until smooth. Gradually mix in the milk and vanilla with an electric mixer until smooth and stiff, about 5 minutes. Color with food coloring if desired.

Eggnog Serves 4 to 6 6 large egg yolks 3/4 cup sugar 2 cups milk 2 whole cloves Pinch cinnamon 1 cup heavy cream 1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg (lightly packed) 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 tablespoons bourbon, or to taste 2 tablespoons rum, or to taste In a large bowl beat egg yolks until they become somewhat lighter in color. Slowly add the sugar. Beat at high speed or whisk until fluffy. Combine the milk, cloves, and cinnamon in a saucepan. Heat on medium heat until the milk mixture is hot, but not boiling. Add the eggs by slowly adding half of the hot milk mixture into the eggs, whisking constantly while you add the hot mixture. Pour the mixture back into the saucepan. Cook the eggnog on medium heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, until the mixture begins to thicken slightly, and coats the back of the spoon. If you have a candy thermometer cook until the mixture reaches 160°F. Do not allow the mixture to boil, or it will curdle. Remove from heat and stir in the cream. Strain the mixture through a mesh strainer to remove the cloves and any curdled bits that may have formed. Let cool for one hour. Stir in the vanilla extract, nutmeg, bourbon and rum (or omit the alcohol for a kid-friendly version).

Sugar Cookies 1 teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon baking powder 1 cup butter, softened 1 ½ cups white sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Preheat oven to 375F. In a small bowl, mix in flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside. In a large bowl, mix the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in egg and vanilla. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls, and place onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden. Let stand on cookie sheet two minutes before removing to cool on wire racks.

VOLUNTEER PARTY Guests will be busy at this party, so give them something like hot chocolate and caramel corn to keep the energy up.

VOLUNTEER PARTY The joy of being with friends and family during the holiday season often makes us think about those who may be alone and in need this time of year. Planning a group volunteer effort will help those less fortunate and bring you closer to your family and friends while you work together toward a common goal.

Hot Chocolate Serves 4 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

You can “adopt” a family for Christmas through Angel Tree or other organizations, like the Turlock Police Department’s Blue Santa program. Each member of your family can purchase a gift item then you can get together for a wrapping party. The Salvation Army in many communities hosts a Christmas dinner for the homeless and those alone on the holiday. They are always in need of people to help prepare and serve the meal. Families with small children can have a holiday card making party and then deliver them to a local nursing home.

¾ cup white sugar 1 pinch salt 1/3 cup boiling water 3 ½ cups milk ¾ teaspoon vanilla extract ½ cup half-and-half cream Combine the cocoa, sugar and pinch of salt in a saucepan. Blend in the boiling water. Bring this mixture to an easy boil while you stir. Simmer and stir for about 2 minutes. Watch that it doesn’t scorch. Stir in 3 1/2 cups of milk and heat until very hot, but do not boil! Remove from heat and add vanilla. Divide between 4 mugs. Add the cream to the mugs of cocoa to cool it to drinking temperature.

There is always a large need for volunteers this time of year. Do a search in your local community for more ideas.

MURDER MYSTERY PARTY Murder mystery parties have long been popular for birthday or other gatherings, but they can also be a fun way to celebrate Christmas or New Year’s Day. There are several holiday-themed mysteries you can purchase online for large and small gatherings. They also can be geared to adults only or a family-friendly version. The 209 Magazine staff held a North Pole themed murder mystery party in December 2019 and it was a raging success. Many thought it was the best office party we’ve ever had. It helps if there are a lot of creative and outgoing people in your group, but with ready-made scripts anyone can participate. The best part of hosting a holiday-themed murder mystery party is your house is already decorated and most people have outfits that match their characters or can purchase them affordably at any store. It’s easy to purchase a murder mystery these days, as all you have to do is an internet search and then find the theme and number of guests that you want. Be sure to check out reviews of the site you are thinking of buying from beforehand. The host of the party gets all the information needed to set up and run the mystery and character scripts for each participant. The parties also come with decorating, costume and even food ideas to enhance the experience.

MURDER MYSTERY PARTY A murder mystery party practically screams out for a red cocktail, so try serving a classic Cosmopolitan. Guests will be doing a lot of mingling, so serve them food that’s easy to eat on the move, like a charcuterie board.

Charcuterie Board When it comes to making a charcuterie board, there really is no parcticular recipe to follow. It can be built on your and your guests tastes. Here are a few tips to make your board delicious and stunning:

Cosmopolitan 11/2 oz Vodka Citron, 1 oz Cranberry juice, 1/2 oz Cointreau, 1/2 oz Fresh lime juice. Add all ingredients into cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well and double strain into large cocktail glass. Garnish with lime wheel or a lemon twist.

Since 1985, Brown’s has been handcrafting gourmet English toffee coated with different types of chocolate. They also make candies original to the Celtic nations, including tablet from Scotland, coffee fudge from Ireland, chocolate orange fudge from Cornwall, salted caramels from Brittany, and St. John’s honey fudge from Isle of Man. The toffee varieties and the Celtic candies are all available online, but the real fun comes from going to their Fiddletown store and kitchen where you can see the goodies made right in front of your eyes. Call them at (209) 245-5400 or in person at 14385 Fiddletown Road, Fiddletown or online at celticcandycompany.com.
