Don’s RV is located on the frontage road between Ceres and Keyes. The business boasts a wide variety of new and used recreational vehicles.
Don’ s RV Center: Best RV Deal er NAME OF BUSINESS: Don’s RV Center. LOCATION: 4872 Rhode Road, Ceres. PHONE: (209) 556-9993 or (877) 236-6778. ABOUT THE BUSINESS: Don Clark began his career in the recreational vehicle industry as a young man out of high school. While attending a local junior college, Don worked at a manufacturing plant, building RVs in his hometown of Los Banos, where he gained his RV structural knowledge. He later moved to Modesto and worked at several RV centers. While working, he also became certified in electrical, refrigeration and all aspects of an RV. In 1989 Don opened a RV service shop and small store. The store has grown to one of the largest in the Valley.
In 2001, Don decided to try his hand at sales. After many months of researching and visiting manufacturing plants, he decided to go with Glendale Recreational Vehicles of Strathroy, Ontario, Canada, which were quality built trailers. Don has since continued his pursuit in carrying only high quality trailers at the best available prices as well as having the best customer service. After moving to his current six-acre facility, he introduced the Keystone RV lines (North America’s #1 manufacturer of RVs): Montana (#1 selling fifth wheel), Springdale and also the Raptor Toy hauler lines. Clark feels his fifth wheel and travel trailer inventory is second to no one and is very involved with all day to day operations.

Sukhi Mann is the owner and operator of Family Pizza, which has been voted as best place in Ceres to play billiards. The business is best known, however, for its pizza.
Family Pizza & Bar, says business has increased significantly following his move to a more visible location down Whitmore Avenue over two years ago. In November 2013 the business moved from its home of 24 years, the Richland Shopping Center, to 2921 Whitmore Ave. The restaurant didn’t have the best reputation for many years because it attracted a different clientele. Now that it is “more exposed,” Mann said the business has “changed 180 degrees.” “We were kind of like in a secluded place in the shopping center,” said Mann, 67, who quit his job at Procter & Gamble 26 years ago to go into the pizza business. The restaurant also serves chicken wings, chicken strips, onion rings, fish and chips and salad. Mann claims the pizza sandwich is the only one in Ceres and is a top seller. “There’s a guy who’s been buying pizza sandwiches from us for 25 years now,” he said. “It’s made like a pizza but on two pieces of French bread.” “It’s like a neighborhood bar now. A lot of people come here. We have pool tables and pizza delivery.”

URVES FOR WOMEN OF CERES, a fitness salon for women located inside the Richland Shopping Center, 2531 E. Whitmore Ave., Suite L2, has been named by Ceres Courier readers as their favorite health club/gym. Dovie Wilson, the owner, is big on taking care of herself. It started when she moved to Ceres from Oklahoma in 1967 at age 12 and realized how out of shape she became. “I wasn’t fit,” admitted Wilson. “I was a chubby, chunky overweight Okie and that’s what started my whole lifestyle change for fitness and health. I had a very poor image and that’s the problem with women and also girls and it starts younger and younger. We have a bad self-image physically of our bodies and that’s
not fair because we all come in all shapes and sizes.” Since becoming owner of Curves of Ceres, Dovie is helping other women improve their bodies and their lives. “I’m about women being healthy and strong and staying fit and weight is not the important thing. To me, you can be obese and still be somewhat healthy if you’re working out and doing something physical.” Wilson felt it was a good move to involve herself in a fitness business in Ceres, where she feels invested. “You want it (Ceres) to be prosperous and you want the people to be healthy and to be happy.” Dovie bought the Curves franchise from Linda Javine a few years ago. At that time Curves was located on Mitchell Road. Linda began contacting members about the closure since she had no buyer. When Dovie heard about the impending closure,
she felt compelled to keep it open. She moved the shop to the Richland Shopping Center on Whitmore Avenue. “Who would not want to be able to work out all day, listen to fantastic music and associate with wonderful women and try to give them motivation to stay healthy and fit?” asked Wilson. “It’s a fantastic opportunity.” Curves wants to motivate women looking to kick start their weight loss, while building lean muscle and toning. Curves is a leader in the fitness and weight management category and is the largest chain of fitness centers for women in the world. For more information, about Ceres Curves, call 538-1515 or email cerescurves@gmail.com or visit the club at 2531 E. Whitmore Ave., L-2, in the Richland Market Place. For more information about Curves, visit www.curves.com.

ERES DRUGS IS PERHAPS the rarest business of its kind. Consider that it’s been around for close to a century. It’s always been run by people who’ve been fixtures in the community. It’s one of the last independent drug stores in the county. It’s also earned the respect of tens of thousands of customers over the years, making it a mainstay of downtown Ceres. Located at 2929 Fourth Street in downtown Ceres, the family-run business offers personalized attention and the feel of the hometown pharmacy of yesteryear. As Ruth D. of Ceres said on Yelp. com: “Ceres Drugs is #1 with me. They are exceptionally fast when I bring in a prescription, usually about 15 to 20 minutes and my prescriptions are ready. Plus their household decor is great. Anything that is your home decorative theme you will be able to find it here, from a Christian theme to a country theme. He’s just one likeable guy – and very good at working with children and adults alike who want nicer smiles. “My greatest passion, as an orthodontist, is knowing the life-long impact my work has on each patient’s life,” said Dr. Barton. “At the end of treatment, most patients are genuinely thrilled with their new smile. Many don’t realize that they’ll have less risk of periodontal disease, TMJ-TMD problems, or tooth wear as they grow older. I love knowing that my team plays a significant role in improving the health, wellbeing, and self-confidence of each person we treat.” Dr. Barton genuinely feels that the best part of orthodontics is his patients. “I love watching their self-esteem blossom from the moment they arrive for their consultation: they’re excited about their future. To be there with them, sharing in the pure joy they experience when they look in the mirror for the first time when we remove their braces, never grows old.” Every smile starts with an initial consultation that will introduce the prospective patient to the
team, as well give a complete initial exam to find out the best treatment options. During the initial consultation, the office will review dental and medical history forms; provide a complete oral exam with X-rays, to determine whether treatment is necessary; help create a customized treatment plan; and discuss all financial information, insurance options, and payment plans. After the consultation, the office will schedule a first appointment and the doctor will place the new orthodontic appliance. This appointment generally takes about an hour, with the team being available to make sure that the patient is as comfortable as possible. Visiting the orthodontist about every four to eight weeks is an important part of orthodontic treatment. The practice works with patients to make sure that appointments are as convenient as possible. Barton has been practicing orthodontics for more than 20 years. His path to becoming an orthodontist was not a straight one. His college education started in the engineering field; however, the more he studied the more I came to love the sciences. “My path eventually led to orthodontics as it’s the perfect synergy of both those fields. On a daily basis, I get to engineer the ultimate smile for my patients, while working within the confines of and respecting each person’s biology and physiology.” Having grown up in Merced, Dr. Barton earned his bachelor’s degree with honors in Functional Biology with a minor in Chemistry SEE BARTON, PAGE 15

Ceres Partnershi p has earned trust of m any • Services offered to all in the Ceres community By J E F F BENZ I GER Editor of the
Ceres (Calif.) Courier
The Ceres Partnership and the Center for Human Services has been chosen by readers of the Ceres Courier as the favorite Community Organization and the best in Nutrition categories. The agency recently moved from downtown at 1317 Grandview Avenue a block south of Hatch Road. Program Coordinator Jennifer Rangel said the move in September 2015 gave the operation more breathing room, from 3,200 square feet to 5,500. Ceres Partnership is a onestop-shop for family resources. “We’re a family resource
center, very similar to a community center but everything is geared towards families,” said Rangel. “So if you need help enrolling in health insurance, Medi-Cal services, counseling services, we offer that. We also have nutrition education classes as well as school readiness classes.” While services are provided to all Ceres families -there are no income guidelines - most of the services are provide to low-income families. “Maybe you want a place to go that’s safe to mingle with other families and gain that social connection with other moms, other dads.” The center on occasion gives out Salvation Army supplied food boxes to Ceres
residents. Clinicians are available to assess problems within the family, such as depression, anger, lack of motivation or children with behavioral problems at school or home. “Depending on what their need they can meet here or meet with them at the school. If they do a session with the entire family they often meet here in the family room.” When it was first created the Ceres Partnership went by the name of Ceres Partnership for Healthy Children. Rangel said the agency dropped the “for Healthy Children” for several reasons. “A lot of times people confused us with a clinic and they thought it was only for
children,” said Rangel. “We’re here to strengthen the entire family and we’re here to partner with the community to help strengthen those families.” Besides, she said, most people shortened it and called it the Ceres Partnership. Programs and services include: Parent Café, Cultiva La Salud, parent education, support groups, literacy and school readiness with interactive parent and child classes like “Toddlers in Motion” (ages 1-3) and “Way to Grow” (ages 3-5); the “Healthy Birth Outcomes” class for pregnant women and parents with a child under age 1; assessment/ child development screening; resource and referral; family advocacy / case management; utility assistance and emer-
gency food box (upon eligibility), nutrition classes; CalFresh application assistance; MediCal / Health Insurance Enrollment; translation assistance for Spanish speaking clients; counseling services; job search and resume writing assistance; outreach, community involvement and family events; and volunteer opportunities for youth and adults. The Ceres Partnership started out as its own collaborative but was later taken under the wings of the Center for Human Services for about 13 years. Services are free to families and paid for by the First Five Commission and through contracts with Stanislaus County Behavioral Health Services and the county Health Services Agency.

In January 2016 Ceres families joined members of the Ceres Chamber of Commerce and the city of Ceres in celebrating the opening of the new headquarters of the Ceres Partnership at 1317 Grandview Avenue. The Chamber ribbon cutting was held during an open house that highlighted all the services the agency provides.

KIDZ FROM PAGE 4 Many parents today are juggling jobs as they raise their children. Open weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., the 3,600-square-foot facility is conveniently located near Highway 99 on Whitmore Avenue for easy drop-off and pick-up, and is an attractive benefit to working parents. As a convenience for busy parents, Kidz also offers a drop-in program for children who are in kindergarten. They may come when their school is closed for winter and summer breaks. Kidz offers a daily schedule full of activities with a theme and focus curriculum for each week. Children work on ageappropriate activities, and are clustered in age-appropriate rooms to foster a comfortable environment. “Some childcare centers keep all the children together for the entire day. We split our
Wednesday, February 22, 2017 age groups into small separate classroom sizes, and this allows us to identify a child’s specific needs very quickly and help them get comfortable in a learning environment with other kids.” A key principal of delivering superior childcare is a low child-to-teach ratio. This allows staff members to interact with each child individually as well as in small groups. Security is of paramount importance, said Cabrera, with the center having a safety lock which requires specific codes to enter. Each parent is given an individual safety code. Kidz is a four-time recipient of the “Best of Ceres” award in childcare, and a recipient of the “Distinguished Business Contributor in Stanislaus County” award. Licensed for 45 children, Kidz is currently enrolling for not only regular classes but spring and summer break. For more information visit kidz-care.com or call (209) 538-3911.

ALIFORNIA LANDSCAPE SUPPLY, formerly the By The Yard (BTY) facility, has been chosen as the Best in Nursery/Gardening category of the “Best of Ceres” contest. The California Landscape Supply yard, located at 4107 Morgan Road, is also the only place in Ceres for do-it-yourselfers who want to pick up ready-mix concrete by the yard. The business, owned by the Thornberry family of Ceres, also sells sand, bark, river rock, crushed gravel and topsoil for landscaping. California Landscape Supply was last year called BTY (By The Yard) but rebranded when a nursery was added. Previously the yard only sold pavers, boulders, rock and sand products, top soils and fertilizers and bark and wood products. The business was an offshoot of D&L Concrete which started about 22 years ago by Ken Thornberry and is now being carried on by sons Nick and Ryan Thornberry. Ken actually took on D&L Concrete from his dad, Marshall Thornberry Jr. who came to Ceres in 1963. Homeowners with a trailer hitch can travel to the yard, back up for a trailer filled with ready-mix concrete and take off for weekend projects at home like patios and sidewalks. Deliveries of materials are also made for those who don’t have vehicles. “We don’t have a minimum,” said Nick. “We’ll deliver a half a yard if you want us to, however we charge an hourly fee to deliver. We’ll do whatever we need to do to get the job done. If you come in and say ‘I want a bucket load,’ I’ll deliver your bucket load. If you come in and say ‘I want 500 yards,’ we’ll figure out a way to get that too.” Ryan remembers accommodating a homeowner who only needed two wheelbarrows full of mixed concrete. They were propped up in the back of the man’s pickup. Cost for materials varies. Pam Speed, a 1976 Ceres High School graduate who went on to earn her horticulture degree from Cal Poly, has been hired as the nursery manager. Fresh out of college she worked at Scenic Nursery for six years, and did a 20-year stint as a garden manager in Dallas, Texas. She returned to Ceres four years ago. “We have everything from your succulents to ornamental grasses,” said Speed. “Those are really popular. There’s so many

cool succulents and cool ornamental grasses now and it’s fun to blend those textures with the leafy foliage. So all the contrasting thin leaves, the bold leaves, you can just
really have fun creating, especially with container gardens.” The nursery has an ample supply of shrubs as well as trees like corral bark and
bloodgood Japanese maples and flowering crepe myrtles and multi-trunked fruitless olives, sego palms, valley oaks, birch, citrus, Cyprus, purple plums, acadias, evergreen flowering pear, Chinese Pistache and redwoods. “She’s hand-picked every one of these plants,” said Thornberry, who managed the yard with brother Nick and father Ken Thornberry. “She comes out here and takes care of them every day. So nursery stock is going to trump everybody. Like if it has burnt-up leaves, she’s pulling it.” Speed said the pickings for nurseries are getting slimmer - especially alternatives to big box home improvement stores which don’t generally staff people knowledgeable about plants and trees. Since it recycles aggregate products, the business also accepts broken concrete and broken roof tiles. The material is grinded up in a large crusher and mixed together to become Caltrans graded base rock for road projects. Cal Crush out of Ripon operates the crusher in the yard. BTY Concrete is open 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. For more information call 538-8492 or visit btyconcreteandmaterials.com.

Ceres (Calif.) Courier

ALLEY PRINTING, WHICH WAS NAMED BEST PRINT/COPY SHOP in Ceres, has earned a sterling reputation since it began in Ceres in 1959. Robert “Bob” Wix started the business after learning how to print on the Heidelberg printing press in San Francisco. Wix then settled in Ceres where his father came from in search of work from Peoria, Ill. Bob Wix opened up his shop then was located on Fifth Street near what later became the Fifth Street Plaza. In the 1960s the business moved to its current location at 2140 Pine Street. Wix has since moved to the Twain Harte area and operates Gold Rush Printing in Sonora while son Kevin Wix manages the Ceres shop. Kevin’s son Kris Wix is carrying on in the business. An estimated 85 percent of Valley Printing’s business is producing labels, mostly for agricultural products. “We still do all the other stuff that prints on paper,” said Kevin Wix. “If it prints on paper we’re capable of doing, especially with the digital world now.” An example of work prepared by the graphics team and printed in Ceres is the Tuolumne County Historical Society newsletter, CHISPA. Valley Printing is a place where many local businesses go to print business cards, circulars, invoices, letter head, and more. But for the most part, Valley Printing is one of those low-key businesses that does a lot of business quietly. “Most people when they walk in don’t realize what’s going on back there,” said Wix. Print runs can run from 6,000 to three million, said Kevin Wix. There is little competition for label printing. “Most of these guys got out of California,” said Wix. “They thought it was too expensive to be here. Most people went over to Sparks (Nevada). My dad was really good friends with one of the big printers in the Midwest and he kind of helped my dad get the label thing started here but they moved their facility to Sparks just to get across the border. But they haven’t been that successful over there. We’re established here right how so it’s not that big a deal. I would hate to re-establish in this state; it would be tough.” Pacific Coast Producers in Lodi is one of Valley Printing’s biggest customers. They also print labels for Seneca Foods across the river in Modesto. Labels printed in Ceres also end up on cans from San Benito Foods of Hollister and Teasdale Foods in Atwater. “Those guys are ordering for everybody under the sun – from the Walmarts to Targets. They’re in control of the labels so they get to order where they’re doing business.” It would be safe to say that there are cans of Kris Wix operates a computer controlling a press at Valley Printing.

produce on the shelves of local markets that were printed in Ceres at Valley Printing. “If you can find an olive can – Pearls brand – you’ll find my label. If you go to Target, we print the Target version of the olive label, Great Value.” Valley Printing also does the labels for fruits canned at PCP of Lodi. The in-house shop has a graphics department which can make labels for specific regions or countries. Wix reached over and grabbed a Monarch label for fruit cocktail that goes to Seneca Foods and then ships out to Costa Rica.
