The ultimate gathering place E very year at this time the county gets a little smaller. This phenomenon is not caused by a rip in the space-time continuum or is it a matter of geographical wonder — it’s called fair time. In 2014, over 239,000 people made their way to Turlock to visit the fair during its 10-day run — that’s more than four times the normal population of this Valley town. The sheer number of fairgoers is amazing, but a crowded fairgrounds isn’t what I am talking about. In a recent street survey, more than half of the people who were asked what their favorite part of the fair is said visiting with friends. It is not uncommon at the fair to run into old school mates, extended family members and your mail carrier — all in one night. Because of its appeal to young and old and those with varied interests, the fair is the ultimate gathering place. Some might say that we now have social media as a universal gathering place. One hundred years ago, the 10 days of the fair might have been the only way to reconnect with old friends. But today, one only needs to visit Facebook and within minutes you can be reunited with everyone in your high school graduating class. It’s true that social media has made reunions of all kinds just a few clicks away, but seeing someone face to face and sharing in the experience of the fair creates bonds that no computer screen can emulate. The fair is also where people with like interests can meet for the first time. Sitting in the stands next to you during the

KRISTINA HACKER EDITOR

demolition derby could be your next best friend, or boyfriend. After the apple pie competition is judged, those whose passion is baking might just strike up a life-long friendship or find a new culinary partner. If you have two antique tractors sitting in your garage, then the fair is definitely the place for a little gear talk. The fair is also the best place to make lasting family memories. I still remember my first trip to the county fair. The corn dogs, carnival rides and farm animals were great, but the best part was walking around the fair with my mom and dad and experiencing everything together. I was able to pass along that experience with my own daughter, with trips to two different county fairs and two state fairs. My little girl is all grown up now, but she still makes the fair a mustgo event every year. I am already looking forward to sharing the sights, sounds and tastes of the fair with my 3-year-old grandson. This multi-generational love of the fair is not uncommon here in Stanislaus County. Take a look around during your next visit to the fair and you are sure to see happy families making life-long memories.

Toy drive spreads Christmas joy in July It’s Christmas in July at The Stanislaus County Fair with the annual toy drive. On July 16, the Stanislaus County Fair and The Salvation Army will hold a toy drive at the Fair gates. Fair guests who donate one or more toys will receive two carnival ride tickets from Butler Amusements. All donations will help local children receive gifts for Christmas this year. “The Fair is about making memories for the children in our community. We must help those in need and make

Christmas a special time for our children,” said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Fair. “We are happy to be a part of a great cause.” Last year guests donated more than 1,500 toys for The Salvation Army. No donation is too small for The Salvation Army. Every donation will help give toys to children during Christmas. In 2014 the Modesto Citadel received 800 toys. The Turlock Corp received 726 toys. If a guest forgets to bring a toy, remember the Fair has vendors that sell toys.

With each fruit or vegetable lunch choice Turlock Unified School District elementary students earned a chance to win prizes through a new contest sponsored by the Stanislaus County Fair.

Fruit & veggie contest gets kids eating healthy BY KRISTINA HACKER

The Stanislaus County Fair partnered with Turlock schools this spring to encourage kids to make healthier choices at lunch time. The 20/20 Fruit & Veggie Contest rewarded elementary students who made healthy eating choices with the chance to win free tickets to the fair, a bicycle or other prizes. Punch cards were distributed to elementary students in the Turlock Unified School District in April to keep track of their healthy eating choices. Each time a student chose one fruit or vegetable option for their lunch for 20 days, the student then received a punch on their punch card. Once the student’s punch card was completed, he or she was entered into a grand prize drawing. Four students from each elementary school in the Turlock Unified School District was chosen to win. “We wanted to enhance our Kids Club program in a fun, yet educational way this summer,” said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair. “The goal was to partner with a

program that has excelled by introducing innovative approaches in educating kids on better nutritional choices.” The contest ran through TUSD’s Real Fresh nutrition program. Since 2007, TUSD school meals have included no trans fats, and there is increased access to fresh fruits and vegetables through the district’s Real Fresh menu. “Anytime that the Turlock Unified Child Nutrition Department can team up with a partner like the Stanislaus County Fair to educate children and their parents about our rich agricultural heritage and educate them on all the fresh local products that we provide in our school lunches every day which will help guide them to a lifelong change of eating fresh healthy foods, I will do whatever is necessary to be a community partner in that endeavor,” said Scott Soiseth, director of Child Nutrition at TUSD. Alkhas said that if the contest is successful in Turlock this year the fair will extend the partnership to other districts next year.

Uber or shuttle your way to the fair The Stanislaus County Fair and Uber are teaming up to bring a more accessible way for guests to attend the Fair. Big names in country, rock, comedy coming for Fair The 10-day run of the Stanislaus County Fair is just around the corner and that means a bevy of entertainment is headed towards Turlock. The fair will open the festivities Friday with a performance from musician Colt Ford. With his innovative blend of country music and hip-hop rhythms, Ford is a cultural force who is ready to go from cult status to a household name. “Colt Ford will bring a different country edge to the Fair and we are thrilled to have him,” said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair. “His high energy performance will make for the perfect opening night of Fair.” For those wanting to get some laughs at the fair, the night to go will be Saturday, when comedian Carrot Top takes the stage. With three decades of comedic performance, Carrot Top is one of the most popular, recognizable, and successful comedians in America. After years of playing to sold-out shows throughout the country, he has now made his home in Las Vegas and is celebrating his tenth anniversary with the Luxor Resort and Casino in 2015. “People fall in love with his show because it is current with today’s headlines,” said Alkhas. “His comedic work is uniquely hilarious and we are extremely excited to have him perform on our stage.” It’ll be la fiesta del verano (the party of the summer) with a slew of international Hispanic entertainers performing at the Fair, the first of which will be 3BALLMTY on Sunday. A Latin pop trio from Monterrey, Mexico, 3BALLMTY, is known for their tribal guarachero style of music. Fair-goers will have a chance to get “Two Tickets to Paradise” on Monday when singer Eddie Money takes the stage. Money has been making music and delivering it to his fans since the mid 70s. The rock legend has recorded over a dozen albums and has done numerous projects in television and film. Performing 150 or more shows every year, Money is always touring somewhere. “My fans are the best, most loyal fans a guy could ask for. They keep coming back for more and I’m not gonna stop until they make me stop,” said Money. Triple platinum recording country music icon Martina McBride will be Wednesday, July 8, 2015 10

performing at the Stanislaus County Fair on Tuesday. “Martina McBride has one of the most recognizable voices in the country music industry,” said Alkhas. “To have a legend like Martina performing at the Fair is very thrilling and something everyone will be looking forward to.” To date, McBride has had 20 Top 10 hits and six No. 1 smashes. As a result, McBride is ranked as the most played woman vocalist on country radio between 1999 and 2010 and was honored with an induction into the cast of the Grand Ole Opry in 1995. Well-known and loved rock band America will be taking the stage at the Fair on July 15. America’s long-standing music career has found them exploring a wide variety of musical terrain. Their best known hits, which include “I Need You,” “Tin Man,” and “Sister Golden Hair,” were the foundations of 1970’s Top 40 and FM rock radio. Niemann recently followed his Record Industry Association of America gold certified multi-week No. 1 smash, “Drink to That All Night,” with his “High Noon” album’s second Top 40 single, “Buzz Back Girl.” Niemann’s chart-topping major-label debut, 2010’s “Judge Jerrod & The Hung Jury,” produced the No. 1 hit and RIAA certified platinum digital single, “Lover, Lover,” and the Top 5 and RIAA certified gold digital single, “What Do You Want.” His sophomore release, “Free The Music, “hit shelves last year and featured the Top 15 single “Shinin’ On Me” and the emotional ballad “Only God Could Love You More.” The legendary rock band Grand Funk Railroad will roll into town July 18 for a

Carrot Top Grand Funk Railroad

show at the Fair. Grand Funk Railroad is extremely excited to be touring in 2015, marking a 46 year milestone. Known as “The American Band,” the high-energy five-piece group will play 40 shows all over the United States this year. The Fair will close out with a show from Banda Machos on July 19. Banda Machos have recorded over 24 record la-

bel productions, selling millions of CD’s and have had many performances all over the world. “Hispanic acts are one of the most popular attractions we have at the Fair,” said Alkhas. “Their performances never disappoint and we are very excited to have them all performing at Fair.” All the headlining acts will be per-

forming on the Bud Light Variety Free Stage. All shows begin at 8:30 p.m. and are free with the price of Fair admission. The 2015 Stanislaus County Fair opens July 10. Discounted Fair admission tickets, unlimited ride wristbands, and the Fair season pass are now on sale through 7 p.m. July 9. Visit the Fair’s website at www.stancofair.com.

Shows, auctions continue tradition of agriculture education The roots of FFA originate from a time when boys were losing interest and leaving the farm. Walter S. Newman chose to attain a solution to the problem with Edmund C. MaGill, Harry W. Sanders and Henry C. Groseclose, staff members of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute Agricultural Education Department. Their core focus was to teach that agriculture is more than planting and

harvesting – it’s a science, it’s a business and it’s an art. Today, the National FFA Organization remains committed to the individual student, providing a path to achievement in premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. The Stanislaus County Fair’s Junior Livestock program offers this opportunity. The program presents a unique

chance for school-age youth, primarily members of 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA), to competitively exhibit and auction their prize livestock on the open market. Only those animals identified by the judges as top-quality and market-ready are sold at auction. The 2014 47th Annual Replacement Heifer Sale grossed $516,350 ($4,212 per head). The 2014 50th Annual Junior

Livestock Auction grossed $795,262.

New exhibits feature butterflies, mind games Let your imagination run wild at the Stanislaus County Fair with two new exhibits. The Stanislaus County Fair introduces the interactive Butterfly Discovery Center and the Mind Works Exhibit. “We try to make each Fair better than the year before, having new exhibits achieves that,” said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair. “We are extremely excited to have such wonderful handson attractions at this year’s Fair.” The Butterfly Discovery Center, sponsored by Sutter Gould Medical Foundation, features two world-class exhibit galleries inside the E-5 building next to the Arch Gate. The first gallery takes the wonderfully popular butterfly feeding program and enhances the experience in the new Flutter Garden. The second component of the Butterfly Discovery Center is the new Exploratorium gallery that brings the fun to science education. The Exploratorium showcases the life and diversity of butterflies and moths through graphics, video and interactive exhibits. Mind Works Exhibit, presented by Sky Trek Aviation, will replace the Wizards Challenge and is a 5,000 sq ft attraction featuring a collection of puzzles, giant classic games, bubble arena, a construction zone and a toddler area that will tease and challenge minds of all ages. Many of the displays in this fun and interactive exhibit are STEM-based and involve critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork. Whether you are 1 or 101, you will find something to enjoy and energize the mind. To complete the attraction, provided are uniformed, trained, and friendly staff that assists with moderating the games, offer puzzle hints or play a game with you.

Fair reveals new CEO, welcomes two directors BY ALYSSON AREDAS

Following the announcement made by Stanislaus County Fair Chief Executive Officer Chris Borovansky in March revealing his intent to retire, the Stanislaus County Fair Board of Directors has unanimously voted to name Matthew Cranford as his replacement. Cranford, a California native, has worked at the San Mateo County Fair since 2008 and in 2009 he was promoted to fair manager. He grew up in the Central Valley area and graduated from California State University, Stanislaus with a Bachelor in Science degree in Business Administration in 2004. Cranford is also a Trained Crowd Manager with International Association of Venue Managers, as well as a Certified Festival and Events Executive with International Festivals and Events Association. “To come back to my hometown is very exciting for me,” said Cranford, who was not present at Monday’s Board meeting. “This Fair is known for its community involvement, leadership, and innovative events, and I have some big shoes to fill with Chris Borovansky leaving.” The board revealed that Cranford was chosen as the new fair CEO after six months of searching, 11 applications, and final interviews along with three other candidates. “The new CEO will be inheriting a well grounded Fair tied to community, as well as an established Friends of the Fair Foundation, which has been built by CEO Chris Borovansky,” said Stanislaus County Fair Board President Ray Souza. Borovansky took over as head of the Stanislaus County Fair as the elimination of state funding saw county fairs around the region either close or shortened their runs. He helped to see the fair continue its historic 10-day run, mainly through community partnerships like the Friends of the Fair Foundation. This leadership through financially troubling times is what Borovansky considers his greatest accomplishment while at the Stanislaus County Fair. Before coming to the Stanislaus County Fair, Borovansky served as CEO for the Jackson County Fair in Central Point, Oregon for 21 years and was Sonoma County Fair manager for many years. He grew up in the fair industry and worked at the California State Fair as a Wednesday, July 8, 2015 22

teenager for eight years. One of his first memories of the fair business was visiting the old California State Fairgrounds. “I’m elated the board has Fair CEO found a candiMatthew Cranford date as strong as Matt,” said Borovansky. “He’ll be a great fit with a tremendous board of directors and staff.” Cranford will begin with an entry level salary of $84,720. Currently, Borovansky earns $98,700. Cranford’s official start date as the fair’s new CEO is Aug. 5. Borovansky is slated to serve until Aug. 31. The board reports that the two men will work together throughout the month in order to ensure a smooth transition. June's Board meeting also marked the inaugural meeting for two new directors — Jeremiah Williams and Angelica Anguiano — who were appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown earlier this month. Williams, a Modesto resident, has been the owner of Oak Crafts by Jeremiah since 1986. He is a member of the Modesto Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Gallo Center for the Arts Board of Trustees, King-Kennedy Memorial Center Board of Directors, Modesto Community Gang Task Force and the Boys and Girls Club of Stanislaus County Board of Directors. Williams is also a charter member of Project Uplift and president of the Greater Modesto Tree Foundation, chair of the City of Modesto Independence Day Parade and community relations director of United Pentecostal Church of Modesto. Anguiano of Waterford is an attorney at the Law Offices of Mark S. Nelson for two years and a law clerk for four years. She was a legal assistant at the Law Office of Aaron Anguiano from 2004 to 2008. She is a member of the Parent Institute for Qualify Education Board of Directors, Haven Women’s Center of Stanislaus County Board of Directors and Murals in Motown. Anguiano has earned a Juris Doctor degree from Humphreys College Laurence Drivon School of Law.

Maria Swanson, Matt Swanson, and Rick Swanson, along with members of the Stanislaus County Fair Board of Directors, stand behind a check made out to the Friends of the Stanislaus County Fair Foundation for $250,000. This gift will go towards funding upgrades to the newly named Associated Feed Livestock and Exhibits Complex at the fairgrounds.

Board hopes gift will encourage more business support BY ALYSSON AREDAS

The facilities and landscape of the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds received a much-needed makeover, made possible by a generous donation and new partnership. Associated Feed and Supply gave a $250,000 donation to the Friends of the Fair Foundation for the conservation and improvement of fair facility infrastructures, as well as operational support, just in time for this year's fair. The donation also went to the creation of the Associated Feed Livestock and Exhibits Complex. “This is a momentous occasion for us,” said Chris Borovansky, chief executive officer for the Stanislaus County Fair. “We have community members that believe in what we do and what we stand for who are willing to protect our fair and be involved.”

Matt Swanson, president of Associated Feed and Supply, along with Rick Swanson, and Maria Swanson, were joined by the Stanislaus County Fair Board of Directors to announce the donation at a November 2014 meeting. “It is our honor to be a part of such a wonderful organization,” said Matt Swanson. “It’s the lifeblood of what we do here in the valley and we think there couldn’t have been a better investment than what we have done here with the fair.” According to Ray Souza, president of the Stanislaus County Fair Board of Directors, one of the many goals of the company’s donation is to encourage other members from the community to support the fair in light of the State's elimination of fair funding four years ago. “We want to thank the Swanson family for their support. It is vital now more than ever to seek support and help for the fair,” said Souza. “This generous donation will be used to create educational opportunities for young ag professionals.”

Stanislaus County Fair receives multiple awards The Stanislaus County Fair was once again recognized at the Western Fairs Association Convention, as well as the International Association of Fairs and Expositions. Western Fairs Association, a non-profit trade association serving the fair industry throughout 14 Western United States and Canada, recognized the Stanislaus County Fair with eight awards overall. The 2015 convention was held in Reno, Nevada earlier this year. “The Stanislaus County Fair board members, staff, sponsors, and volunteers strive to produce an outstanding Fair year after year,” said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Fair. Alkhas also said that the Fair continues to stand out as one of the best in the United States and Canada. “This year will mark the 104th year that the Stanislaus County Fair has been present in Turlock and we take great pride in having a Fair that is not only community driven, but produces outstanding entertainment,” she said. The Fair picked up three first place awards, five second place awards, and one third place award from WFA, which included:

Third Place: • Best New Innovative Use of Technology – Social Media efforts through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn and more. The Stanislaus County Fair also received an Award of Distinction for Communication in the following category: Best Single Sponsorship Activation at a Fair, from the International Association of Fairs and Expositions. The awards were presented during the Awards Reception on Dec. 10, 2014, during the 124th annual IAFE Convention held in Las Vegas. The purpose of this competition is to improve the advertising and publicity programs of fairs and to provide recognition

for those fairs doing an outstanding job. The IAFE is a voluntary, nonprofit corporation, serving state, provincial, regional, and county agricultural fairs, shows, exhibitions, and expositions. The 2015 Stanislaus County Fair opens July 10 for a 10-day run. Fair guests can count on an award-winning experience that has been over 100 years in the making.
