Pot or plot? Right-size plant picks for gardening success Whether you’re gardening in containers or have a big plot in your backyard, rightsizing your plant picks to coincide with your available garden space can yield a more productive and pleasurable gardening experience. More than a third of all American households now grow some type of food themselves, making food gardening the third largest yard activity after landscaping and lawn care, the National Gardening Survey shows. Whether you aim to trim grocery bills by growing your own produce, add your own fresh herbs to your summer cooking, or just plain love to garden, choosing the right plants for your gardening space – pot or plot – is your best bet for great success.
it’s an apartment balcony or backyard patio. Make sure the pots are large enough for the plants you’ll put in them and have good drainage holes. Consider container color; dark containers will absorb more heat, so try using lighter colored containers.
Girl, Bush Goliath and Better Bush. For larger varieties, use a large pot, at least 5 gallons for each plant and support plants with a cage. — Smaller eggplants such as Patio Baby Mini Eggplants. — Peppers, like Lunchbox Sweet Snacking Peppers, that are smaller in size and high in yield. — Cucumbers if you add a trellis to the pot and train them to climb. Raised beds can host bigger veggies like Beefmaster Tomatoes, or varieties that require more room to spread on the ground like zucchini. They’re also great for greens like collards, lettuce, mustard and Swiss chard, and a variety of peppers, beans and eggplants.
Cultivating in containers and raised beds: Gardening doesn’t require a huge plot of land for hefty harvests and good success. Planting in containers can solve space problems and raised beds allow you to enjoy a garden if you’re short on space or have poor soil quality in your yard. Place containers in a sunny spot, whether
Plants suited for containers include: — All herbs. — All greens. Add flowers to the same pot for an ornamental touch. — Tomatoes like Bonnie Plants’ popular Husky Cherry Red, Patio, Bush Early
Planting plots: In-ground gardens allow you much more room for larger plants. Even if your plot isn’t huge, it can accommodate plants that require more room, like watermelon and corn. In addition to staples for your table like greens, tomatoes and peppers, a garden plot allows you to incorporate a
greater variety of veggies, like beans, peas and squash, in your garden plans. No matter where you live or how much or little space you might have, you can enjoy growing your own food. Be sure to right-size, according to your space and need. Once you get growing, you’ll love the homegrown flavor of your harvest and the enjoyment gardening brings. Conservation-friendly designs — with water BY KRISTINA HACKER Turlock Journal
Californians looking to revamp their outdoor spaces into conservation-friendly designs may want to take a trip to Escalon and Creative Water Gardens. Although the ongoing drought makes maintaining a lush lawn difficult, installing a recyclable water fountain as the centerpiece of grass-free landscape can actually save water, said Deni Sullivan of Creative Water Gardens. "Everything on our property and everything we do is recycled," said Sullivan. "We've done studies and found that fountains use much less water than grass or watering plants. Many people are now tearing out yards and replacing it with ponds or water features." Deni and her husband Patrick Sullivan have been specializing in water landscaping for over 19 years. They share their expertise with professional landscapers and DIY homeowners at their one acre business property that houses over 100 water features and 15 ponds and waterfalls on display. Along with the materials needed to install any size pond on a property, the Sullivans also have a variety of fish. "Koi will get 3 feet big and are best in deeper ponds. Goldfish are for smaller ponds, " said Sullivan.

Creative Water Gardens holds an informational class once a month from March through October for those interested in adding a water feature to their outdoor space, but the company also works with customers one-on-one. Spring (fashion) forward
7
BY ALYSSON AREDAS Turlock Journal
Just as surely as flowers bloom in the spring, so do new fashion trends. Before aspiring fashionistas rush to unravel layers of winter clothing and jet off with money in hand to update their closets, Glitz Fine Clothing owner Lisa Espinola has provided her insight on what every trendsetter needs in their spring wardrobe this year. According to Espinola, the biggest fashion trend that has unmistakably taken over dresses, shirts, skirts and tops this spring is the boho-chic style, which is a design that evokes various bohemia and hippie style influences. “It’s definitely a boho trend,” said Espinola, “These items are loose, flowy and super comfortable pieces. The best part is a lot of sizes can reflect this style, not just tiny people.” Espinola also affirmed this year’s trend towards rompers, which are one-piece short suits that are usually sleeveless or have short sleeves. “Rompers are huge this year,” said Espinola. “I think the reason people are drawn to them is because they are easy. It is just one piece of clothing. You put it on and you have your outfit, besides accessories of course.” For fashionistas looking for a little something extra to spruce up their spring outfits, look no further than bralettes. Bralettes, which are versatile bras without wires or molded cups and feature thin or lacy straps, are perfect for clothing with low sides or backs. “It also acts as an accessory to be honest,” said manager Leslie Jerner. “Some people purposefully show it just to elevate an outfit.” Glitz Fine Clothing also has trendsetters covered with fashion-forward accessories, including booties, fringe-covered purses and metallic temporary tattoos— most popularly referred to as Flash Tattoos — that have begun to dominate the jewelry sector. “Just look at where you can wear these tattoos, you can wear them anywhere,” said Espinola. “It’s just like having an accessory, but it’s more fun.” For men who are also looking to make a statement with spring fashion trends, Envy Fine Clothing has them covered. Owner Darlene Dover reported that men are trading in their more elaborate clothing for a cleaner style of clothing, one of which is button-up shirts. “Everything is a lot cleaner,” said Dover. “Before we sold a ton of Affliction and clothing like that, but now it’s a cleaner style.
“People still like Rock Revival jeans with stuff on the back, but we also see an increase in the plainer styles, such as the Hudson’s and the Joe’s,” continued Dover. Another trend that Dover has noticed throughout her store is the tendency of men to purchase shoes that are highly versatile and comfortable. Two brands that she characterized as being trends this spring are Sanuk shoes and Ugg boots. “I see a lot of men buying Ugg boots, not meaning the sheepskin, but more of the work boots—something hard, yet comfortable,” said Dover. “We also sell a ton of Sanuk shoes which go great in spring with shorts, but you can also wear them with jeans.” Overall, Dover believes that the biggest trend taking over men’s wardrobes this year are garments that don’t always get the credit they deserve: socks and underwear. “Underwear is huge trend right now,” said Dover. At her store, Dover carries two popular underwear brands: Ethika and Saxx. Ethika is characterized as a high performance action sports underwear and Saxx Underwear boasts comfort and breathability. Both brands range from $20 to $30 a pair. “It is literally like the men’s Victoria’s secret,” said Katie Regert, manager and merchandiser. For men who want to step out in style, Envy Fine Clothing also carries fashionable socks, including the Arthur George brand by Robert Kardashian and the Living Royal brand. “We see a lot more men shopping for themselves,” said Dover. “Men are definitely more in touch with their fashion sense right now than they’ve ever been and we continue to see that rise.”

Movies under the stars BY SABRA STAFFORD Turlock Journal
The time of packing up the car and heading out to the drive-in movie may be fading from memory, but that doesn’t mean the experience of watching a film under the night sky has fallen by the wayside. “Outdoor movie theaters have become a lot more popular in the last few years with more people wanting to spend time outside, especially when the weather is nice,” said Greg Alavezos, the owner of Stanislaus Audio Video. Stanislaus Audio sells and rents the equipment needed for backyard theaters. Alavezos said most people prefer to rent the equipment, because it’s about “a fraction of the cost.” The process of setting up an open-air theater does not have to deplete the bank account. There are a range of options and prices, from using a sheet and a basic projector, to a movie-theater style screen, high quality projection and surround sound audio. The set-up of a backyard movie theater requires a screen, a projector, some type of player device, whether it is a blu-ray or dvd player, or a laptop or tablet, and speakers if
they are not built in to the player device or the projector. The first thing to consider is where in the backyard will the theater be set up. The location should be spacious enough the fit the screen and equipment, as well as the seating arrangements. It also helps to be mindful of lighting that will affect the picture quality and the direction the sound will be projected. You don’t want your movie night ruined by background traffic or a neighbor complaining about the noise. “It’s also important to consider where your power source is and if you are going to be showing a live event, then you need to have it set up within the reach of the receiver,” Alavezos said. The choice for a screen really depends on the budget. An online search will turn up pages and pages of do-it-yourself options that are relatively low in cost. For those not inclined to go the homemade route, the prices range from just over a $100 and on up. The options for projectors and players also depend on the budget in use. It typically is the most expensive aspect of the backyard theater project and the one that will have the

biggest impact on the quality of the picture. Outside movie projectors are different from indoor models, in that the brightness levels are greater, allowing for movies to start at dusk. Some models have built-in speakers and others are a combo of projector, dvd, and speakers.
To make the outdoor movie night even more memorable, make sure to have plenty of comfortable seating, blankets and pillows, and some fresh-popped popcorn. For more information about renting backyard movie equipment call Stanislaus Audio Video at 529-2700.

City recreation classes abound for summer activities and weeks throughout the summer available, with sign-ups beginning April 30. Lifeguard classes are another popular option for older children as many swim students start the path towards becoming certified lifeguards equipped with first aid and CPR training. For those kids interested in staying out of the water, there are signups for volleyball, ballet, t-ball, self defense and more. However, the fun isn’t just for the kids. Adults can also sign up for a fall softball league, line dancing, volleyball, and t'ai chi ch'uan or self defense classes too. "The City of Turlock Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities Department has a variety of summer activities to choose from," said Recreation Supervisor Karen Packwood. “Visit the City of Turlock website for registration dates as some of the programs fill very quickly." Those interested in signing up for classes can visit www.cityofturlock.com

As the school year comes to a close in the upcoming months many parents will be looking for summertime activities to busy their little ones. Fortunately, the City of Turlock has a multitude of classes and programs for local youth. Each year the Parks, Arts and Recreation Department publishes a recreation guide that details the park rentals, youth activities and camps available. One of the most highly anticipated aspects of the summer guide is the swim lesson registration. With swimming classes for parents and their infants as well as classes for teenagers up to the age of 17, the swim classes are a common way for locals to learn the basics of swimming as well as develop their talents. With classes at the pools of Pitman High School, Turlock High School and Columbia Park there are a range of times

Spring clean your health (BPT) - Spring is a time to reevaluate your daily routine and reduce any unnecessary clutter from your life. It is also a time to make positive changes for a happy and healthier lifestyle. Simple changes, such as resetting your sleep pattern, updating your oral care routine and refreshing your diet can result in big changes to your overall well-being. To inspire consumers and their families to get a healthy start to spring, Dr. Nancy Simpkins, Internist and Medical Advisor for the State of New Jersey, shares a few healthful tips on behalf of Colgate Total: Get moving outside: Spring is a great time to be outdoors, so ease back into your exercise routine with daily walks outside. This will help reduce stress and help lower your risk of heart disease and hypertension. Get creative and use apps to track and challenge your friends to walk at least 10,000 steps a day. Reset your sleep pattern: With the arrival of spring come longer days and more day-
light. Beat fatigue by setting a goal to keep your waking and bed time consistent — even on weekends. This will help avoid mid-day burn outs while keeping your body in sync with its natural rhythms. Think about your gum health: Most people don’t realize that proper oral hygiene can be a good step toward helping to improve their overall health. In addition to brushing your teeth, make sure to take good care of your gums — they’re the foundation of a healthy mouth. Travel healthy and be prepared: As you begin to make plans for spring and summer travel, be sure to schedule your family doctor and dentist appointments and address any issues before your trip. Compile a list of medications, unique health issues or history, and physician contact information. This will be important and save time if you end up needing healthcare while you’re away. Refresh your diet: Simple changes to your diet can bring more sustained energy and knock off a few pounds. Swap out snacks

Local bicyclists share love of the ride BY ELIZABETH ARAKELIAN Turlock Journal
It is springtime which means a lot of people are going into their garages and dusting off their bikes for the first rides of the year. While there may not be several pronounced trails in town, locals are still getting together to explore the streets of Turlock and surrounding communities, according to the owners of Cycle Masters. For roughly 30 years groups of varying levels have gathered at the local bike stores after work for an evening ride. "It's really informal. People just show up," laughed co-owner John Morris. The tradition continues today with an advanced road bike group convening on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. and an intermediate to advanced group that gathers at the same time on Thursdays. However, not all who bike are experts. Plenty of locals enter Cycle Masters to pur-
chase a bike for casual rides as well. "A lot of the riders around here want exercise," said co-owner Dan Woodall. The most popular bikes for purchase are comfort bikes, like the Raleigh Venture, which is great for the flat land in Turlock said Woodall. "A lot of people like it because it’s a road bike without handles that you have to lean forward on," added Morris. Other popular models include cruisers for a casual ride and mountain bikes for those interested in going on the canals and into the country. Other riders also enjoy heading near and around the California State University, Stanislaus campus and off towards Taylor Road, said Morris. In addition, the Turlock City Council will also consider approving an Active Transportation Plan in future weeks which outlines ways to make Turlock a more pedestrian and cyclist friendly town.
California Bicycle Helmet Statute A person under 18 years of age shall not operate a bicycle, or ride upon a bicycle as a passenger, upon a street, bikeway, as defined in Section 890.4 of the Streets and Highways Code, or any other public bicycle path or trail unless that person is wearing a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet that meets the standards of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z 90.4 bicycle helmet standard), the Snell Memorial Foundation's Standard for Protective Headgear for Use in Bicycling, or the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM F-1447 standard). This requirement also applies to a person who rides upon a bicycle while in a restraining seat that is attached to the bicycle or in a trailer towed by the bicycle. Helmet Fit • To find the right size helmet, put one on your head without fastening the straps. • The front of the helmet should be level and two-fingers width above your eyebrows. • Shake your head from side to side: There should only be a little movement.
