WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP ROUNDTABLE
Continuing the conversation KRISTINA HACKER EDITOR
The Turlock Journal is continuing the conversation it started in 2016 about women in leadership roles with a breakfast and round table discussion focused on women in government. The 2nd annual Turlock Women’s Leadership Round Table event will feature a panel of five women who are leaders in various government positions. From Ann Veneman, former director of UNICEF and the only woman to serve as United States Agriculture Secretary, to current California Agriculture Secretary Karen Ross, State Water Resources Control Board member Dorene D’Adamo and county supervisors Kristin Olsen (Stanislaus) and Leticia Perez (Kern), each of these women chose a life of public service and the unique challenges it brings. The panelists will share their personal career stories, the
successes and challenges along the way, and offer advice to the next generation of leaders. While the focus is on women in government, the round table discussion is not about politics. Instead, the event aims to foster a conservation about leadership in general and the many paths that women take to reach their goals. The event will also include a vendor fair and buffet breakfast, with beverages served by members of Turlock Firefighters Local #2434, who will be accepting “tips” for their breast cancer research fundraising efforts. Proceeds from the event’s ticket sales will go to a MNC Publications women’s scholarship fund and be awarded to a local student in spring 2018. The Turlock Women's Leadership Round Table is hosted by the Turlock Journal, presented by Legacy Health Endowment and sponsored by Winton, Ireland, Strom & Green, Turlock Irrigation District, Mocse Credit Union, Ambeck Mortgage Associates, Wally Falke’s Heating & Air and Yonan's Floral. Hope to see you there!

Before moving to California, Secretary Ross served as Director of Government Relations for the Nebraska Rural Electric Association and as Field Representative for U.S. Senator Edward Zorinsky. a quality education for six million Californians and recognizes the profound impact that it has on the lives and futures of both our students and state. Additionally, Olsen recognizes that civic engagement cannot begin until the public understands what its government is doing. For this reason, she continues to push for more open government at all levels.
Stanislaus County Supervisor
Prior to being elected to the Assembly, Olsen served five years on the Modesto City Council (2005-10). Professionally, she served as the Assistant Vice President for Communications and Public Affairs at CSU Stanislaus (2005-10), and as the Senior Communications Manager for the California Restaurant Association (1999-2004). Her first job out of college was as a staffer in the State Senate, a position in which she admittedly got “the bug” for public service. Olsen graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. from Westmont College. She serves on the Board of Directors for CA Women Lead that recruits and trains women to pursue appointed and elected office. She also serves on the Board for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Stanislaus County that helps abused and neglected children living in the foster youth system. Kristin Olsen was elected to the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors in June 2016 and began her term in January 2017, after representing Stanislaus and San Joaquin Counties in the California State Assembly since 2010. In addition to her elected role as a County Supervisor, Olsen serves as the Vice Chair of the California Republican Party and runs her own consulting firm named Red Suit.
LOCALLY HANDCRAFTED
Over the years, Olsen has developed a statewide reputation as a dynamic, forward-thinking leader – “the sort of person the Republicans need” (LA Daily News) and whom Governor Jerry Brown described as “pragmatic and effective.” A mother of three school-age children, Olsen approaches her job as a concerned citizen and “soccer mom” who strives to better the lives of Californians. This perspective is evidenced in her efforts to improve the education system, address perennial water problems and promote economic growth. Olsen served as Assembly Republican Leader from 2014 through early 2016. In this capacity, she was the Caucus’ lead negotiator on major policy and fiscal issues, led its political and campaign efforts, and was its principal spokesperson. Further, she traveled up and down the state meeting with a wide variety of stakeholders and promoting polices designed to move California forward. In her district, Olsen has earned high marks as a bipartisan consensus builder whose “party affiliation was of less importance than her Valley affiliation” (Modesto Bee) when working on issues of regional concern.

While Olsen has been active in a myriad of policy issues, her primary focus is on education and government accountability – two areas in which she aggressively challenges the status quo. She is passionate about providing SEPTEMBER 13, 2017

WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP ROUNDTABLE 2017 PANELISTS Leticia Perez
Leticia is Governor Brown’s appointed member to the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC), and will make history in 2017 by serving as the First Latina President of the California State Association of Counties (CSAC).
Kern County Supervisor
Leticia is a sought after speaker on issues ranging from the nuances of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), alternative energy development, and recipes to the best hard-shell-tacos South of the Kern River. She is a frequent guest on local and valley-wide radio and television. Her political career has been reported on by the Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The New York Times, and she has been featured on the Daily Show with John Stewart. On a personal note, Leticia’s mother was a Vietnam era Army Nurse and she comes from a family of veterans. In fact, she married one, and it is because of her marriage to her husband Fernando that Leticia has become an avid proponent of mental health support for combat veterans who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Above all else, Leticia and Fernando are the proud parents of sixyear-old Jude and baby Noah. Kern County Supervisor Leticia Perez is a third generation Bakersfield resident. She attended local public schools and graduated from Highland High School. Leticia went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree from U.C. Santa Barbara in Law and Society before journeying to Indiana to fulfill her dream of obtaining a Juris Doctorate. Leticia was raised alongside a dozen foster children and comes from a family that has been dedicated to community service for more than forty years in Kern County. Following in her parents’ footsteps, Leticia has been active in political and social issues, as well as philanthropic efforts from the time she could walk. She literally accompanied her parents to Bible College in a carriage—sleeping quietly under a seminary desk while her parents prepared for the ministry. Leticia returned from Law School in 2006 and represented indigent clients while volunteering her free time on the Boards of Directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters, Community Service Organization, and New Life Recovery Training Center. Her dedication to the practice of law and her service to the community earned her the respect of her peers and their selection of her as the first woman to serve as president of the Kern County Bar’s Criminal Defense Section.
@FarmHouseExchange
In 2010, Leticia served as Chair of the Kern County Planning Commission and later became the consultant for the California State Senate Committee on Economic Development and the State Permitting Process. Leticia has received numerous awards for her partnership with local businesses, job developers, and community leaders while spearheading some of the county's most innovative economic development and renewable energy development projects.
