MADS PEDER NORDBO THE FIRST MATTHEW CAVE THRILLER FROM THE MASTER OF ARCTIC CRIME

EDITOR’S LETTER With summer in full swing, July is the ideal time to hide inside with a book – or, yes, take one out into the sunshine if you are more that way inclined. Here at Turnaround our July list really does have something for all tastes, so no matter where you’ll be doing your reading this month, we’ve got you covered. First off in fiction we have Whiskey When We’re Dry (p4, No Exit Press, 9780857303189, p/b, £9.99), a lyrical western about a young woman who disguises herself as a boy and sets off to bring her gun-slinging fugitive brother home. The familial theme is continued in both The Golden State (p6, Text Publishing Company, 9781911231318, p/b, £10.99),

Lydia Kiesling’s debut novel following a young mother on the verge of mental breakdown, and Ducks, Newburyport (p4, Galley Beggar Press, 9781910296967, p/b, £14.99), in which an Ohio housewife tries to bridge the gaps between her reality and the stream of information and advertisements being pushed from all sides.

In graphic novels this month, Tonta (p16, Fantagraphics, 9781683962052, h/b, £17.99) sheds a little light on the family background of one of Jaime Hernandez’ most memorable characters, while Sensible Footwear (p17, Myriad Editions, 9780993563348, p/b, £17.99) rifles through close to 70 years of Lesbian culture in a blend of personal and political history. Laguardia (p13, Berger Books, 9781506710754, p/b, £16.99), on the other hand, turns its attention to the years to come in an Afrofuturist vision of a world where African and shape-shifting alien immigrants battle discrimination and travel bans. Last but not least, July’s nonfiction features the revised bigger-than-ever iconic skateboarding book Dogtown (p30, Akashic Books, 9781617756993, h/b, £34.99), as well as Lydia Lunch’s So Real It Hurts (p32, Seven Stories Press, 9781609809430, p/b, £12.99), featuring a foreword from the late Anthony Bourdain. Finally, The Baby

(p31, Text Publishing Company, 9781911231264, p/b, £12.99) explores the infant’s place in literature, and the conflict and interplay between motherhood and writing. Our crime offering includes The Fragility of Bodies (p7, Bitter Lemon Press, 9781912242191, p/b, £8.99), the first in an Argentinian noir series starring journalist Veronica Rosenthal, and The Fault (p8, Honno Welsh Women’s Press, 9781909983991, p/b, £8.99), a chilling, Gibraltar-set thriller which follows a civil engineering prodigy whose unravelling mental health endangers the lives of his family. July also brings a gripping thriller for young adults; Blood Will Out (p29, Penguin Teen, 9780735262973, p/b, £9.99) has been described as Silence of the Lambs for teenagers, told in alternating perspectives of predator and prey.

Elsewhere in YA we have The Dark Missions of Edgar Brim: Monster (p30, Penguin Teen, 9780735262737, p/b, £8.99), the second book in a gripping gothic trilogy featuring monsters from classic literary tales.

And that’s a wrap on July!

Don’t Miss… Horizontal Collaboration By Navie & Carole Maurel p42, Korero Press 9781912740017 h/b, £16.99, June 2019

This poignant, female-centred graphic novel explores the taboo of ‘sleeping with the enemy’ in France during WW2.

Woolf, Virginia; Groff, Lauren & Radtke, Kristen (illus)

On its surface, Night and Day reads like a Shakespearean comedy: we follow the romantic endeavours of two friends, Katharine Hilbery and Mary Datchet, as love is confessed and rebuffed, weddings planned and cancelled, until we finally arrive at two engagements. But these dramas play out against the women’s movement for voting rights and equal wages, and just as Woolf makes use of the tropes of romantic comedy, she pushes back against them with an undercurrent of doubt about the institution of marriage and the civic imbalance between the sexes. KEY SELLING POINTS • A re-issue of Woolf’s overlooked second novel. • Celebrates the 100 years since Night and Day was originally published. • Introduced by bestselling Lauren Groff, author of Fates and Furies (2015) and Florida (2018; both William Heinemann). • With beautiful illustrations by The Believer’s deputy publisher Kristen Radtke. FOOLS’ GOLD

Fiction - Crime

Hitchens, Dolores & Swierczynski, Duane (fore)

Dolores Hitchens wrote crime novels that were both tough and compassionate, with a sharp eye for the emotional scars that violence leaves. The basis for JeanLuc Godard’s film Band of Outsiders, Fools’ Gold is a swift and unadorned tale of three young people - two boys just released after being incarcerated for a juvenile offense, and an orphaned girl living in a house full of secrets whose lives are rapidly torn apart by what starts as a simple plan of robbery. It echoes other classic American narratives of youth astray and on the run, and with its headlong pace catches the rhythm of adolescent crisis, as Hitchens’s protagonists find themselves caught up in a situation spiraling beyond their control. KEY SELLING POINTS • A new Library of America edition of a classic thriller, originally published in 1958. • Fools’ Gold was the basis for Jean-Luc Goddard’s film Band of Outsiders. • This edition comes with an introduction from Canary author and prolific comic book writer Duane Swierczynski. HORIZONTAL MAN, THE

Eustis, Helen & Finch, Charles (fore)

The Horizontal Man was Helen Eustis’s only crime novel, and she won an Edgar Award for it, combining a wildly disparate set of elements into an enduringly fascinating work. In its way it is a classical whodunit that stands comparison with old-school practitioners such as Agatha Christie or Dorothy Sayers. This mystery transpires in the rarefied precincts of the English department of a venerable college, an English department very much of the restless postwar moment, echoing with references to Freud and Kafka. Eustis finds comedy high and low in a cavalcade of characters bursting at the seams with repressed sexual longings and simmering malice. Beyond the satire, she stirs up - with a narrative whose multiple viewpoints give the book a deliberately modernistic edge - a troubling sense of the mental chaos lurking just beneath the civilized surfaces of her academic setting. KEY SELLING POINTS • The Horizontal Man (1946) was loosely based on Eustis’ experiences at Smith College, Massachusetts. • The only crime thriller by renowned author Helen Eustis, for which she won an Edgar Award in 1947. • Marries the golden age style of Dorothy Sayers and Agatha Christie with a modernist multiple narrative. • A film adaptation of Eustis’ 1954 novel The Fool Killer starred Anthony Perkins. JOURNEY THROUGH UTOPIA

A Critical Examination of Imagined Worlds in Western Literature Berneri, Marie Louise; Adams, Matthew S. & Woodcock, George

Politics

LIES ACROSS AMERICA What Our Historic Sites Get Wrong Loewen, James W.

Journey through Utopia is a richly detailed and critically compelling examination of utopian literature, beginning with Plato’s Republic and continuing through to Huxley’s Brave New World. Utopias have been penned with diverse intentions: some as pictures of an ideal society, some as blueprints for action, some, especially in times of severe censorship, as covert criticisms of existing conditions. Marie Louise Berneri exposes the dark shadow that lingers above most utopian works by emphasising the intolerant and authoritarian nature of these visions, warning of the doom that awaits those foolish enough to put their trust in an ordered and regimented world. Journey through Utopia is a necessary companion, and in many cases an antidote, to imagined fictions from antiquity to the present. KEY SELLING POINTS • New edition of this 1950 work, most recently re-published in 1982 and currently out of print. • Updated with an introduction by Matthew S. Adams that situates Berneri’s work in the context of her life. • Also includes new foreword which extends Berneri’s analysis into contemporary utopias. • A historical survey and analysis of utopian thought which exposes authoritarian concepts of freedom. BECAUSE INTERNET

Understanding the New Rules of Language McCulloch, Gretchen

NOT A CRIME TO BE POOR

The Criminalization of Poverty in America Edelman, Peter

In one of the richest countries on Earth it has effectively become a crime to be poor. For example, in Ferguson, Missouri, the U.S. Department of Justice didn’t just expose racially biased policing; it also exposed exorbitant fines and fees for minor crimes that mainly hit the city’s poor, African American population, resulting in jail by the thousands. As Peter Edelman explains in Not a Crime to Be Poor, in fact Ferguson is everywhere: the debtors’ prisons of the twenty-first century.

The internet isn’t the first technology to alter how we communicate, but it is making our language change faster and in more interesting ways than ever before. The programmers behind the apps and platforms we use decide how our conversations are structured, from the grammar of status updates to the protocols of comments and @ replies. Linguistically inventive niche online communities spread slang and jargon exponentially faster than in the days when new dialects were constrained by physical space. What’s more, social media provides a fascinating laboratory for watching language evolve in real time. KEY SELLING POINTS • McCulloch is a leading and commerically successful linguist - regularly interviewed in print and on radio. • She is the go-to voice on popular linguistics, often invited by the New Yorker and Wired to write for them. • Complex linguistic theory is explained clearly and is accessible for all readers. • The perfect tool for spotting online trends with language and learning how they influce our own digital speak. AMERICA SYNDROME, THE

Apocalypse, War, and Our Call to Greatness Hartmann, Betsy

Has apocalyptic thinking contributed to some of the USA’s biggest problems - inequality, permanent war, and the despoiling of natural resources? From the Puritans to the present, historian and public policy advocate Betsy Hartmann sheds light on a pervasive but - until now - invisible theme shaping the American mindset: apocalyptic thinking, or the belief that the end of the world is nigh. Hartmann makes a compelling case that apocalyptic fears are deeply intertwined with the American ethos, to our detriment. In The America Syndrome, she seeks to reclaim human agency and, in so doing, revise the national narrative. By changing the way we think, we just might change the world. KEY SELLING POINTS • Timely topics include a focus on climate change, overpopulation, and American empire, cutting across religious and secular lines. • Course adoption potential for American studies, cultural studies, environmental studies and international affairs. • Author is well known in reproductive health and environmental justice circles. • Author delivered a TED talk titled ‘Beyond Apocalypse and Back to Earth.’ ISBN 13: 9781609809454, 288pp p/b, £14.99 Published by SEVEN STORIES PRESS Rep Territories: UK, Ireland & Europe

FIRE AND FORTITUDE

The US Army in the Pacific War, 1941-1943 McManus, John C.

John C. McManus, one of the most highly acclaimed historians of World War II, takes readers from Pearl Harbor - a rude awakening for a ragtag militia woefully unprepared for war - to Makin, a sliver of coral reef where the Army was tested against the increasingly desperate Japanese. KEY SELLING POINTS • The first book to tell the full story of the U.S. Army’s enormous role in the defeat of Japan. • From an award-winning author with a PhD in American and Military History. • McManus’ previous book earned him exceptional coverage in USA Today, Wall Street Journal, NPR and more. • This wide-ranging text goes beyond the battlefield to explore POWs, racial segregation and more. • The first in a two volume history of the war that will appeal strongly to military history buffs. PRICE OF DREAMS, THE Giacobino, Margherita & Donougher, Christine (trans)

The Price of Dreams takes the form of diary entries supposedly written by Patricia Highsmith herself, interspersed with a third-person narrative, and focusing on her psychological and emotional life, with the emphasis on feelings, relationships and aspirations rather than facts, dates and events. A lesbian in an era when to be homosexual was to be reviled and discriminated against, and made to feel guilty and ashamed, Patricia Highsmith struggled with her sexual identity in this social context, and the book fruitfully explores how this might have contributed to her creative output. The title is a reference to Patricia Highsmith’s second novel The Price of Salt, a lesbian romance originally published under a pseudonym after it was rejected by the publisher of her first novel. It was not until 1990 that she agreed to its reissue under her own name, with the new title Carol. KEY SELLING POINTS • Margherita Giacobino’s book is a fictionalised biography/autobiography of Patricia Highsmith. • Portrait of a Family with a Fat Daughter was Margaret Drabble’s Book of the Year in the TLS, 2017. • The film adaptation of Carol, starring Cate Blanchett, brought Highsmith back into the public eye. VENICE NOIR: THE DARK HISTORY OF THE LAGOONS Panfido, Isabella & Donougher, Christine (trans)

The identity of Venice is inseparable from the waters of the lagoon by which she is surrounded and from which she rises like a mirage. Isabella Panfido takes us on an exploration of those waters that since time immemorial have been Venice’s refuge and defence. She visits some of its many islands (the names of a few - Fisolo, Sant’Arian, Lio Piccolo, San Secondo will be unknown even to the most assiduous visitors to the city), and introducing us to their elusive magic and their well-kept secrets. We learn of haunting illusions created by the peculiar geography of the lagoon under certain climatic conditions; of the devastating plague of 1630 that led to the loss of 47,000 Venetian lives over a period of sixteen months; of the destruction by a bitter north wind of baskets full of carefully harvested soft-shelled crabs and their seemingly miraculous rebirth and metamorphosis from one delicacy into another; of thwarted yearnings and ambitions, of jealous rivalries and revenge. KEY SELLING POINTS • Isabella Panfido is arts correspondent for Corriere del Veneto, as well as a poet, translator, and literary critic. • An expert guide and consummate storyteller, the author draws on a deep and extensive knowledge of her native city. • Weaves together myth and legend, imagination and historical fact, to capture the mystique of the phenomenon that is Venice. • A unique blend of noir fiction and travel writing.
