EDITOR’S LETTER Welcome to Turnaround’s new bi-annual Fiction catalogue. With more novels being published than ever before this catalogue showcases our most indispensable fiction titles – from literary, to crime and thriller, science fiction, fantasy and superlative YA adult titles. It is our honour and privilege to work with so many leading independent publishers, who are producing some of the most vital, exciting and daring fiction around. Here are our highlights. According to Rob Doyle, the ‘editor’ of In This Skull Hotel Where I Never Sleep (p8, Broken Dimanche, 9783943 196627, £10, p/b), Killian Turner is ‘Ireland’s vanished literary outlaw’ (he disappeared in Berlin in 1985) and this book represents key critical and biographical texts about and by him. Almost as mysterious a work is Nick Salaman’s The Experimentalist (p8, Dome Press, 9781999855925, £9.99, p/b) – an extraordinary novel about a young girl who may or may not be the subject of a Nazi experiment. Francis Plug: Writer In Residence (p10, Galley Beggar, 9781910296929, £11, p/b) marks the return of the wonderfully shambolic, eponymous author. Whilst Francis’s lot may have changed from that of struggling writer to ‘writer in residence’ at the University of Greenwich, he’s no more composed than before – but it wouldn’t be half so much fun if he were! From one writer to another What’s Left of the Night (p13, New Vessel, 9781939931610, £12.99, p/b) looks at three days in the life of renowned Egyptian Greek poet C. P. Cavafy. The Diaries of Emilio Renzi: The Happy Years (p15, Restless Books, 9781632061980, £16.99, p/b) take us back to Argentina in the 1960s and 70s where we catch up with Piglia’s alter-ego as he runs a magazine, works as a publisher, and encounters the literary stars among whom he would soon take his place: Borges, Puig, Roa Bastos, Pinera. What do you do when you can’t make sense of your family’s history? The Book of Dirt (p17, Text, 9781925240269, £10.99) is Bram Presser’s answer, as he sets out shape the narrative of his grandparent’s lives during the Holocaust. The debut collection of short stories by Camille Acker, Training School for Negro Girls (p19, Feminist Press, 9781936932375, £14.99, p/b), give us a series of unapologetic and resilient women, challenging monolithic assumptions of black identity. Moving on to crime fiction… What Was Lost (p23, Dome Press, 9781999855963, £8.99, p/b) is a stonking psychological thriller about a children’s book author who loses her memories and becomes part of a murky medical experiment to

retrieve them. Follow-up to last year’s monumental Suburra (also a hit Netflix show) The Night of Rome (p24, Europa Editions, 9781609454890, £12.99, p/b), follows the new generation of enterprising gangsters and racketeers locking horns with politicians and the church. Another fantastic second-inthe-series comes in the form of The Language of Secrets (p25, No Exit, 9780857301444, £7.99, p/b), in which we re-join detectives Rachel Getty and Esa Khattak in another thoughtprovoking and politically charged police procedural book about terrorism, religion and politics. Finally, we go back to the mid1800s to see how they solved crimes – or didn’t – in this brilliant novel based on a true and unsolved case The Murder of Harriet Monckton (p24, Myriad, 9781912408030, £14.99, h/b) – an exciting new move into historical crime for Elizabeth Haynes, in which she ‘solves’ the murder of a young women in Bromley. SF and fantasy fiction is making important headway in tackling issues around gender and sexuality. The Tiger Flu (p30, Arsenal Pulp Press, 9781551527314, £13.99, p/b) is one such work – at once a female hero’s saga, a cyberpunk thriller, and a convention-breaking cautionary tale, it tells the story of a group of parthenogenic women. Meanwhile Rachel Pollack’s entry into PM Press’s Outspoken Authors series, The Beatrix Gates (p31, PM Press, 9781629635781, £10.99, p/b), is a colourful mix of science fiction, magical realism, memoir, and myth exploring themes of spirituality and transformation. Then there’s Breach (p30, Ace, 9780451491039, £13.99, p/b), the first in a new fantasy/alternate history series, set in Berlin during the Cold War. The Berlin wall is made entirely of magic and when a breach unexpectedly appears, spies from both sides swarm to the city as World War III threatens to spark. There’s a lot of wonderful writing going on in Young Adult Fiction, and we especially wanted to point out the fantastical A Winter’s Promise (p33, Europa Editions, 9781609454838, £13.99, h/b). A sophisticated French translation set in a world shattered into many floating celestial islands known Arks, each with its own unique powers. Ophelia, who has the power to communicate with the souls of inanimate objects, reluctantly travels to a distant Ark to marry the aloof Thorn and finds herself ensnared in a savage political plot.
