Raphaëlle Goethals Born 1958, Brussels, Belgium Lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico

Blue Moon III, 2017 Encaustic and mineral pigment on birch panel 38 ½ × 40 ½ inches Courtesy of the artist and Turner Carroll Gallery, Santa Fe Retail: $15,000 Raphaëlle Goethals creates atmospheric abstractions of wax and resin. She probes the physicality of her materials by layering, pouring, scraping off, and effacing the surfaces of her paintings, leaving traces of multiple processes. Informed by Minimalism and the Light and Space movement, as well as New Mexico’s vast landscapes and its quality of light, Goethals creates work that explores the evolution and history of painting and the origin of language. Many of her works contain markings evocative of signs and symbols. In Blue Moon III, a sequence of colored dots hovers over the milky surface, adding structure and suggesting that the layers underneath are an illusion.
