A Brush with Nature Paintings by Eric Jacobsen
July 9th to August 3rd, 2018
FEATURED ARTIST
Eric Jacobsen There is a reason that Eric’s paintings win the artist choice award at the top plein air events along with scores of other honors. His exceptional work carries with it an emotional impact that is timeless. Because his compositions are simplified and elegantly designed, Eric is referred to as an ‘artist’s artist.’ Eric Jacobsen was born and raised in New England. He received a BA in History from Gordon College in Wenham, MA in 1989. He then went on to received Beaux Arts training at the prestigious Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, CT where studies are structured in the manner of French academic atelier, nine hours per day of drawing and painting instruction from life. Now one of the nation’s top landscape artists, Eric creates his paintings on location near his home in Oregon. Eric's true inspiration is the amazing beauty that he sees in nature. Jacobsen is a “Plein Air” painter. He takes his oils wherever he goes, setting up on site, working until his painting is finished. ”It is most important to me that my paintings convey a certain mood", Eric says. "I want them to be felt by the viewer without his or her having to analyze or think about them. As a general rule, I try to find strong compositions in nature and then paint the scene accurately while leaving out any extraneous details which would only busy up the painting and detract from the strength of the piece as a whole. My painting process consists of finding a painting site and setting up to paint for a couple of hours, or until the light has changed. For larger paintings, I will return on consecutive days at the same time, under similar lighting conditions to finish a piece." His awards include 2016 Door County Plein Air, Artist Choice Award. 2015 Evergreen Fine Art Artist Choice Award, and in 2015 Sonoma Plein Air, Artist Choice Award 2014 Best in Show Paint the Peninsula, Port Angeles, WA and Best Body of Work, Plein Air for the Park, Grand Teton National Park “It is a true honor to bring the work of such talented painter to Jackson Hole.” Says gallery owner, Kathryn Mapes Turner. “Among nationally recognized landscape artists, Eric has earned deep respect for his work. His paintings have a feeling of freedom and spontaneity that we all strive for. It is a dream come true to share the genius of his work with our community because of the significant contribution that Eric makes to our experience of beauty.”
