RECENT WORKS

WILLIAM TURNER GALLERY

RECENT WORKS Santa Monica, CA - The William Turner Gallery is pleased to present, Recent Works, a collection of new paintings from Los Angeles based artist, Andy Moses. Continuing his exploration into the nature of paint, Andy Moses’s newest works are mesmerizing hybrids of art and science. Implementing boundarypushing techniques that he’s been practicing for the past 30 years, Moses creates paintings that blur the line between pure abstraction and a new kind of pictorialism. These aren’t representational images, yet there are undeniable traces of natural phenomena in Moses’s paintings. He seeks not to replicate imagery from the natural world, but to mimic nature itself. His complex process of altering, mixing and pouring paints is informed by the physical behavior and interaction of his medium with the forces of nature. Moses’s sweeping, luminous surfaces are executed with an almost impossible precision - a precision that is simultaneously organic and highly controlled. His meandering lines of psychedelic chroma oscillate between near digital sharpness and dissolving washes of color. In these works, Moses has managed to achieve a unity of line and color that has an extraordinary presence. Moses acts as a sort of alchemist, first mixing and transforming his paints for weeks and then applying them in a single marathon session. Critic Shana Nys Dambrot says of his process, “More than a painterly technique, his composition resembles an orchestration of observed natural phenomena: gravity, viscosity, hydrodynamics. He manipulates thickness instead of brushwork, motion instead of gesture, to replicate both natural and transformational processes, forcing idea and matter into a conscious collaboration.” Andy Moses lives and works in Venice, California. Born in Los Angeles in 1962, Moses attended California Institute of the Arts from 1979 to 1981. At CalArts he focused on performance, film, and painting, studying with Michael Asher, John Baldessari, and Barbara Kruger. In 1981, he moved to New York and worked for the artist Pat Steir. Later that year he developed a type of process painting that is simultaneously abstract and representational. Moses is interested in pushing the physical properties of paint through chemical reactions, viscosity interference, and gravity dispersion to create elaborate compositions that mimic nature and its forces. He was in his first group exhibition at Artists Space in 1986 entitled selections. He had his first solo exhibition in New York at Annina Nosei Gallery in 1987. He has continued to exhibit his work in New York, Los Angeles, and abroad over the past thirty years. He returned to Los Angeles in 2000, where he continues to refine and expand the vocabulary of his specific painting processes, imagery, and interrelationships with the technical and natural world. His paintings are included in a number of prominent public and private collections.
