FOREWORD: The William Turner Gallery is pleased to announce Ethereal, a group exhibition that brings together a collection of works that explore the myriad ways in which we interpret and experience the intangible. Exhibiting artists include Peter Alexander, Dawn Arrowsmith, Larry Bell, Kelly Berg, Casper Brindle, Fred Eversley, Frank Gehry, Jimi Gleason, Eric Johnson, Jay Mark Johnson, Sandy Lajer, Andy Moses, Ed Moses, Steven Salzman, Michel Tabori and Eric Zammitt. Defined as “seeming to belong to another world”, ethereal describes a state of being that is elusive and often fleeting, like the glow from a hazy sunrise or the shimmering light of a distant star. The notion of light comes to mind, when one contemplates the ethereal. Light can call to mind energy, warmth, color, weightlessness, it can be captivating or transformative, it has the ability to reveal or obscure. It is these dichotomies that have fascinated and inspired centuries of artists - from Titian’s turbulent depictions of classical mythology to Richard Diebenkorn’s spatially explorative Ocean Park series to James Turrell’s immersive perceptual cells. Continuing this visual pursuit of harnessing the ethereal, the artists in this exhibition draw inspiration from diverse sources - natural phenomena, space exploration, the unmistakable light of the California landscape, the metaphysical, memory and psychology. Through the lens of sensory based phenomena, each artist has developed an aesthetic technique that invokes a range of experiences, from the meditative to the perceptual to the euphoric. Their approaches vary greatly, from elegant minimalism to mysteriously abstracted representation, but each piece results in a unique investigation into the space where transitory experience, ephemeral sensation and physical presence intersect.
