INTEGRATED

With- James Leech and Kristin Nelson

To design a fully integrated building coordinating structural, mechanical, and environmental systems into one cohesive building. This juxtaposition between Detroit Mercy and the Fitzgerald community creates the potential for shared and multipurpose spaces both to foster interaction and build community among constituent user groups. An architecture that protects and enhances the environment while contributing to human health and wellness. Through the implementation of sustainable environmental strategies and building practices.

COMMUNITY DESIGN

With - Benjamin T. Ellefson

This design proposal was to create a pavilion in a empty lot of the Fitzgerald neighborhood across from UDM. With a special focus on transparency and community space the proposed pavilion would function as a source of identity for the neighborhood. The modular building block is intended to represent how a community of individuals can stand together to create strength and shelter. 10

MODULAR DESIGN

With - Prof. Ashan and Thomas

The design challenge was to design a futuristic kiosk that could be assembled for different uses and respond to the surrounding context (Miami Florida). This design reflects architectural characteristics found in Miami FL evolving around forming a harmony with the surrounding city. The light-green titanium exterior finish is stronger than steel creating a durable temperature resistant form that is seamless and water resistant.

FURNITURE PLAN

INTERIOR DESIGN

With - Prof. Ashan and Thomas

Complete control of interior design including ceiling height, lighting, furniture, and construction of additional elements. The only stipulation was that nothing can be taken away from the existing plan. There was close attention to paths people would take through this ground floor. Ceiling heights were used to express a change in program and give a sense of containment in lounging areas. 18

LAKEVIEW HOTEL

With - Prof. Ashan and Thomas

The design problem was to create a hotel that would take full advantage of the view and follow building codes. With a site location that was centered around a vacant piece of property near an airport in Bay city Michigan. There are multiple programs that function within this hotel including a restaurant, banquet hall, and back of house hotel services. 22

GEOGRAPHICAL INTEGRATION

With - Claudia Bernasconi

A design project about placing two duplexes on a residential site in Cincinnati. The context, communal spaces, integrating the building with the site, and addressing the view were all priorities in the design process. The intention behind this design was to create a centralized courtyard there the surrounding buildings would frame the communal space. A lifted structure would reach towards a lower embedded unit and create a interlocking relationship. The parking would overlook the site serving as the first entry point and providing an uninterrupted view of the city.

The intent of this installation was to design spaces for the wellness of those with Autism Spectrum Disorder in a higher education environment. Many students with ASD reported that on campus they wanted more accommodations, such as increased awareness of what ASD is, more sensory spaces on campus to recharge, and more acceptance of self-stimulatory behavior. This also correlates with the research findings that architecture can improve the attention span, behavioral temperament, and response time of those with ASD. Sensory stimulation can calm them down when factors such as acoustics, lighting, and tactile aspects are considered. This installation engages with these factors to create a space for all people to enjoy, but is specifically designed with ASD students in mind to recharge their senses.
