Page Six Dear Greta I’m writing to you today to say a very sincere thank you for all you do. I know you probably won’t see this letter, but I am truly a fan, and I admire you more than you know.

My name is Catherine Barr, and I’ve been in the media as a writer/reporter, and now as a programmer/publisher, for close to 20 years. My cousins and I are first-generation Canadians, and I live in West Vancouver. My parents immigrated here with next to nothing and worked hard to be successful. Like your parents, they are strong and brave and have had an amazingly positive influence on my life.

Again, like you, I’ve travelled to many world cities when I was young and learned a lot more during those trips than I ever did in school. I know I’m not as young and hip as you, but I’m not that old either. In fact, at your age (16-yrs), I was already entering University and was writing my own computer programs. I do not have Autism, but I too see the world very differently, and I couldn’t agree more with your logic. In fact, I’d like to help if I can.

I’m not being sarcastic when I say that I think you are absolutely right. If we are in a climate emergency, then we simply must act - and act now. When a house is on fire, we call it an “emergency”, and we do everything we can to put it out as quickly as possible. Simple. Logical. So why are we seemingly ignoring this climate emergency?

Is it not a “real” emergency? Are there various degrees of emergencies? Are they lying to us or manipulating us? In other words, I’m as confused as you are on this point.

And I don’t blame you one bit for being frightened by what you hear out there, especially from the media. I work in this business, and they scare me too. Sadly, these days, it seems less about exploring the facts and more about making money and “opinionating”. They do however love a good headline, and you are an amazing headliner. To the media, you are a reality TV child star on the world stage, making an otherwise dull and hard-to-explain topic compelling, interesting and sensational.

You have reached super-stardom status, and you deliver a very strong message. You also deserve to be taken seriously. But the short version of your message is often distributed to the world via television sound bites or news excerpts. Sometimes it can be taken out of context. The result, some people glorify you, and some people get mad at you. Worse yet, some start hurling insults and criticism your way. Again, this is just what happens when you become famous. I’ve interviewed enough actors, politicians and rock stars to know that fame is fleeting and you can’t please everyone.

The fact is you have become very powerful, and people, especially young kids, are listening. This is where things will start to change for you. The more power you are perceived to possess, the more people will try and manipulate you and use you for their own purposes. I worry about them taking advantage of you. Special interest groups, and politicians on both sides, are trying to scare kids like you - and in my opinion, that is unforgivable.

To survive, I believe your message has to grow and evolve. You’re going to have to show even more compassion, knowledge and understanding, of both sides. Leading with a hammer only works for a while before people start painting you as a zealot. And I think you deserve to become known as something much more than just the “Greta Effect”.

Kids like you are the future - but you are not the first, and you won’t be the last. Real historical figures who stand the test of time don’t deliver messages of divisiveness, fear and blame. This may seem like a war, but it doesn’t have to be. I know it’s fun and trendy to #SchoolStrike these days, but protest must eventually lead to a viable plan and a method to unite people on all sides with diplomacy and discretion. Some of this may actually weaken your position overall. Instead, seek peace and cooperation not uprising, anger and hate. We’ve seen how current politicians are dividing us and, in my opinion, it doesn’t work at all.

Lastly, I’d like you to know how my generation lived and maybe what we did to help get this climate movement started. Back then, we called it “earth awareness”. I grew up watching cartoons like “SchoolHouse Rock” and the Energy Blues (from 1978) which taught us that we were harming the earth with all the energy we consumed (look it up on YouTube - you’ll love the video). My milk and juice came in glass containers - and my water came from the tap, not from the store in little plastic bottles. I remember the first Blue Box delivered to our house for recycling and I only ever owned one pair of “running shoes” at a time. My mom hand-sewed my grad dress, brought home the groceries in paper bags, and we grew vegetables in our garden too. When I was finally old enough to drive, I paid into AirCare every year to license my car and ensure it was as energy-efficient and emission “reduced” as possible. I also either rode my bike or took the bus to school every day. So, I like to think my generation didn’t “cause” all of the problems you say.

I’m pretty proud to be Canadian. We love the outdoors, are very environmentally conscience, and we want to do better. At present we are responsible for 1.6% of the world’s carbon emissions. Still, we are massive consumers and buy a lot of athletic shoes, athletic clothing, sporting gear and other electronics from countries like China, India and Japan. Combined, these countries and the factories that produce these goods emit an estimated 40% of the world’s carbon emissions, but I don’t blame them for trying to fulfill our demands. Most of these items are also made from non-recyclable plastics produced from petroleum processing, so we aren’t helping here either.

If you think about it, everything from juice boxes, plastic snack “Lunchables”, and especially athletic fashion footwear and clothing are marketed directly to, and for, kids. As I’ve said, wider understanding and better awareness are needed. Maybe you could add this to your message and help bring this to the attention of your younger followers and their parents.

When history speaks of its leaders, it is usually with reverence and respect. True leaders earn their place of honour not due to entitlement or arrogance, but due to a comprehensive understanding of the world and all its people. A good politician can peacefully unite those with different backgrounds and different opinions. And a good teacher understands that the past can provide great insight for the future. You have a pure heart Greta Thunberg and are a great light to many. May your ongoing journey continue to reflect the best of all of us in our desire to do good and live together in harmony. Because the earth, and all its inhabitants, deserve to be here for a very long time.

It was an endeavour that Merritt and Osborne took seriously right from the start, and by their own admission, maybe too seriously sometimes. Forget sex, drugs and rock and roll - these guys had no time to waste. And from their unusual name to their unique sound, nothing was going to stop them from “making the scene”.

Taking their name from an often forgotten but significant point in history when British Columbia was almost lost to the U.S. as part of the Oregon boundary dispute, “54-40 or Fight” was the slogan which bolstered then-Democratic

“If it’s not fun, it’s funny,” Osborne says with a look that proves he’s seen it all.

“Usually it’s fun. And if something goes wrong, you’ll laugh about it later. Like when an amp goes down or something, which happens.”

When asked if he loves performing, Osborne just smiles. “It’s a hoot. It’s in another dimension really. It’s communicating. It’s like the other people in the band, and the audience in the room. They all kind of come together and there’s this immediacy about it,” he says. “We take everything in our days for granted, and we shouldn’t. Every moment is kind of brand new. It’s hard. But when you’re up on stage, it’s a ride. You’re flying. It’s a cool thing.”

Social Seen DR. PETER CENTRE PASSIONS GALA Dr. Peter Jepson-Young knew first-hand that people living with HIV and AIDS have many needs far greater than just survival. Before his death in 1992, he established the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation. Last month, at the Passions gala, over $220,000 was raised to continue to provide muchneeded services to nearly 500 individuals living with HIV/AIDS, as well as various other serious health and psycho-social conditions. The evening was a gastronomical feast featuring food from 20 different restaurants, cocktails, wine and a live auction.
