Where in the World? A few years back I organized a strange but wonderful rally at Ambleside beach in support of animal rights. A tragic event involving sled dogs in Whistler had resulted in an outpouring of social media emotion all over the world. So, in an effort to turn some of that passion into something positive, we quickly organized the first ever “Doggie Tweetup”. Close to 2,000 people showed up with their pets to tweet their message and share internet photos around the globe. It was an amazing event because by giving people an outlet, we were able to encourage them to spread good messages instead of hate. I kid you not when I say that media from all over showed up that day. We even got international press coverage. It was exciting - especially since it would help promote all the great things about our little local community. Then it appeared, in big bold photo captions all across Canada as part of the national wire feed - “Doggie Tweeup Social Media Event held at Ambleside Beach, North Vancouver”. North Vancouver??? Seriously? Now being from West Vancouver I’m used to people mixing things up and thinking that I’m talking about the West End or even the West Side of Vancouver. But this? Aargh! Since then, we’ve taken a casual poll and asked people from all over if they’ve ever heard of West Vancouver and/or North Vancouver. You might be surprised to learn that the worst culprits live right in our own city, so to speak.

Now this is anything but scientific, but overall I’d say that 1 in 5 people who live in greater Vancouver don’t really know where West Vancouver is. North Vancouver fares a little better in the results. But more often than not, people seem to think that the entire area is North Vancouver and they do not make a distinction between the two. Clearly this area needs some good PR. And as owners of WestVancouver.com and NorthVancouver.com, we are championing the cause. Therefore, starting this month, we are delivering copies of both of our magazines to downtown Vancouver and beyond. Yes, we are growing. Personally, I’m looking forward to the questions about why a West Vancouver (or North Vancouver) magazine is being delivered downtown. But for me the answer is simple. Why not? I’m proud of my communities - both of them. I think we have a lot of amazing people and hard working businesses doing great things here and it’s time to share that with our downtown neighbours and the world. After all, people all around the world read the New York Times because it is different and exciting. Well I think that West Vancouver and North Vancouver are different and exciting and in need of a little attention. And in my book, there’s nothing wrong with trying to create a little sparkle.

Dan Aykroyd He’s a Canadian icon, an accomplished writer and a brilliant comedian - plus, he’s one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live. He’s also been a Blues Brother, a Ghostbuster, and has been caught Trading Places with the likes of Eddie Murphy and more. Now, on the heels of the recent SNL 40th Anniversary special, this truly legendary talent serves up some of his secrets of success and dishes on everything from the new script of Ghostbusters 3 to his Crystal Head luxury vodka.

Q: Everyone wants to know about the glamorous life of a movie star. What’s it like to be so well-known and famous? A: The only glamorous element of my life is my wife who is the epitome of glamour and beauty and walks the earth in a glamorous way. Maybe I have some of the glamour rubbing off on me from time to time, but I would say that that word is best applied to her. In terms of day to day glamorous with me? You know I drive a Ford. Glamorous? Perhaps. Some might think so. I’m thinking “practical and reliable” would be more of the terms that would apply to me. Q: Saturday Night Live recently celebrated 40 years. You are Canadian and a member of the original cast. Tell me about your early days as a comedian - especially with Saturday Night Live. How has comedy developed? How does it compare now vs then? A: The early days were exhilarating. Gilda Radner, John Candy, Bill Murray, Belushi, Joe Flaherty, Gene Levy, Martin Short, Dave Thomas, Rick Moranis. To be around these people. To see them working. To be a part

of that community when we were all starting out in Toronto and at Second City. It was amazing. Fun.

I’m working on it now and when I sit there and work on it I sort of hear his voice. Not in the psychic sense, like he’s visiting from beyond - in fact he didn’t believe in the afterlife and did not believe in ghosts at all.

Saturday Night Live was like video commandos at work. Today, if I look at the show, the careers of Kristen Wiig, Will Ferrell, Fred Armisen, Jimmy Fallon - they all speak to Lorne Michaels’ ability as a discoverer of talent and an impresario.

The first two movies would not have been anything without him. But I do hear his voice. I hear him and I say “Harold wouldn’t have the character say that”. Or I say “he’d change that”, or “he’d move the scene here” or “he’d elevated this” here. I hear him because I worked with him and I know his sensibilities and I feel that the third script is going to benefit from his input even though he’s gone. I loved him dearly and I’m going to miss him a lot.

Comedy is in a good place today, it really is, especially thanks to these young writers who are taking it to the next generation. I watch the show diligently - the way you watch your old university basketball or football team play. I love to watch the show when I can. Not every week, but when I can catch it - I do.

Q: Your Crystal Head vodka is now available in BC. Tell us about that.

Q: Tell me about coming back as a guest on Saturday Night Live and the episode with Justin Timberlake.

A: Well -BC is about luxury travel, luxury restaurants, luxury hotels. So BC consumers deserve to have a product like this. It’s just something I enjoy myself. I don’t want to drink junk. I will not settle for junk and I’m willing to pay a little more for the best.

A: It was fun. The “Five Timers” club. It was a fun sketch to do. It was Justin Timberlake who brought us back on the show as the Wild and Crazy Guys. He wanted Steve Martin and I to join him for the show. It was something he wanted to do when he was a guest there. Q: You were a bartender in the “Five Timers Club” sketch on SNL. And they had your Crystal Head Vodka on the set. A: Yes, They had the Crystal Head product on the bar at the “Five Timers Club”. And that wasn’t even Lorne doing that. That was just my friend Keith the set decorator doing that. He put them up there cause they looked great. It’s always fun to go back to the show in the right context and the right time. Not like I’m going to hang out there every night. Q: What was one of your favourite characters to play? A: The Conehead. Absolutely. I feel I am that. I feel very alien. I am the Conehead really. I feel closer to him than anybody. Q: What were your favourite movies to make? A: That’s tough. Ive had a lot. But I think the one where we had the most multi-tasking - the one where we were doing everything from singing, dancing, acting, stunt driving, writing, recording was Blues Brothers. We owned a whole city and we made Chicago look like a character in the movie.

Q: Any advice for young comedians?

I’d have to say that was probably my favourite all-round working experience. We had some challenges. It was difficult. You know Johnny had some issues that we had to overcome and the budget went over and all that and the studio was stressed, but in the end we produced a movie that ends up being one of the greatest films of all time, and that’s not me saying that, that’s the critics. Q: You’re known for Blues Brothers, Ghostbusters, Trading Places. You’ve working with such big names. How does that feel? A: You know we don’t do this great work alone. We don’t. It’s all collaboration. Q: Your friend Harold Ramis (Ghostbusters) passed away last year. Can you tell us what it was like working with him? A: Oh, he was wonderful. He was so wise and so smart and so generous and so giving - and he encouraged talent and had a great laugh. I will miss him. Luckily he did put a lot of work into the Ghostbusters 3 script before he died. And

A: Read two books. Steve Martin’s “Born Standing Up: A Comic’s Life” and “Troubadour”. Those two books are handbooks for comedians. Also throw in John Lithgow’s “Drama: An Actor’s Education” about commitment to craft and profession. Also to young comedians, don’t only perform live and act - but write. Keep the writing skills because writers own the world. - CatherineBarr.com

Is your Thyroid to blame? Have you ever wondered why some individuals are able to lose weight with diet and exercise, and other individuals cannot lose weight despite a disciplined program? Are you experiencing thinning hair, loss of lateral third of the eyebrows, mental fogginess and low sex drive? Have you had a good metabolism all of your life, and with menopause noticed weight gain around your midsection? Your thyroid may be to blame. But what if your thyroid tests appear normal? The standard blood test for thyroid function is called TSH, or thyroid stimulating hormone. This is a measure of how hard your thyroid gland is working to produce thyroid hormone. It is possible, however, for the TSH levels to be normal but other markers of thyroid function, such as T3 and T4, to be low. These levels are not commonly investigated unless the TSH level is out of normal range. Knowing these levels ensures proper management of thyroid functioning. Inflammation can also be present in the thyroid gland, which may not necessarily affect the levels of TSH. If the active thyroid hormone produced is low (T3), then symptoms of low thyroid function will be exacerbated. What can cause low thyroid function? Chronic stress, as well as unbalanced hormone levels, can decrease the production of circulating hormone levels. High cortisol levels (stress hormones) can cause high levels of reverse T3, a hormone that binds to thyroid receptors and makes them less efficient. Low levels of the hormone progesterone can cause a decreased production of active thyroid hormone. This hormone typically will decrease with fluctuations in hormone levels leading up to menopause. Marine Drive Naturopathic Clinic offers Comprehensive Thyroid testing to measure all markers of thyroid function and determine the best treatment options for patients including prescription and natural approaches. Dr. Cathryn Coe has over 9 years of experiencing helping patients to optimize thyroid function, including helping patients with autoimmune thyroid disorders. Knowing the levels of various thyroid hormones is the best way to determine how well the thyroid is functioning, even if you are already medicated for your thyroid gland.

Dr. Cathryn Coe, ND has over nine years experience with special focuses in anti-aging medicine, bio-identical hormone therapies, allergies, skin health and digestive concerns.

Mikhail Zalesky grew up, like most West Vancouver kids, surrounded by nature and beauty and family. Like most of us living here, he was also accustomed to feeling safe and secure, to having food on the table, a nice place to live, and a solid education. After all, these are the things that matter. Right? But now, as a budding and promising young artist, Mikhail is hoping to redefine our world by taking on not just the things that matter - but also by showing us the energy and excitement of what lies in our hearts. Living in our country, we get used to having it all. It’s something most of us usually take for granted. But for a young Mikhail, the impact of what he saw, planted within him a deeper desire to do more. Still, as a dutiful son, he proceeded to graduate from high school and pursue a practical life full of reason and order. A business degree would one day allow him to maybe take over the family business. It was a safe, secure and solid choice. But after a short stint in university, it was clear to him that he was destined to take the road less travelled. So with the blessing and support of his family, Mikhail packed up his bags and headed to New York City and a place at Parsons - The New School for Design.

The Art of the Matter “Product design can be like a lamp, or a fridge, or a car. I want to focus on sustainability. I want to reinvent things that have archaic operating systems. There is so much more utility that can be put into some things beyond just form and function.” Some examples of his work to date include an atmospheric water generation device that takes humidity and turns it into potable drinking water. He’s also designed a playground that utilizes the energy of the children playing on it as well as the surrounding area. Blessed with a maturity beyond his years, Mikhail does however acknowledge that changing the rhythm of technology will take a while. And while he is on the right track, he knows that this is just the beginning. “There’s been a lot of trials and tribulations. I’m just a 21 year-old kid, so I’m working on gaining credibility.” And that credibility may not be far behind.

“I went with my heart instead of my head. I’ve been there for two years and I’m lucky enough to now be able to study both business and design,” he says.

In addition to his design projects at school, Mikhail recently held his first ever art exhibit at West Vancouver’s Hollyburn Country Club - at which he sold every single piece in only a few hours.

Focusing on strategic design and management, Mikhail has now managed to strike that enviable balance between passion and product - between desire and destiny. And, thanks to a keen sensitivity and agile mind, he is now truly beginning to turn heads with his functional art-ability.

The 14 piece collection, entitled “The Whole is Greater than the Sum of its Parts”, included compelling works like Absolution, which was composed entirely of crayons, The I and the Me photographic series and the hauntingly beautiful, National Geographic inspired portrait of Our Jordan (read more on opposite page).

“I really like to go and do things that haven’t been done before. To hunt for that new idea. To materialize that thing that didn’t exist before,” says Mikhail. The collection, which took hundreds of hours of work and an entire summer to amass, will always remain special and close to his heart. And as for parting with such beloved pieces well, as they say, it’s all part of the job. “You know that life is going well when you can’t tell the difference between work and play.” Nowadays, whether it’s work or play, it’s clear that there will be no turning back on what lies ahead for this young artist and his revolutionary ideas. “I really couldn’t have [achieved] any of my success without my friends and family and brother,” he says. “Following the path of an artist is always a little bit of an adventure and [everyone] has always been behind me. My family gave me such amazing work ethics and social skills, and it really helped to find me and make me what I am. I am so fortunate for it.” And no matter what - Mikhail plans to keep going in the hopes of reaching that place of enlightenment that so very few of us get to visit. A place where it maybe isn’t always safe, or sane, or even comfortable. But a place, nonetheless, that continues to be at the heart, and the art, of what really matters. - CatherineBarr.com

NorthVancouver.com | WestVancouver.com

“‘Absolution’, which was a part of the summer 2014 showing ‘The Whole is Greater than the Sum of its Parts’, is a portrait of a child composed of wax crayons, where each crayon represents a ‘pixel’.

“This piece, entitled ‘Our Jordan’, is a portrait of one of the individuals National Geographic deemed to be a probable representation of what the ‘average’ human could look like in the year 2050. However, after closer inspection, one will notice that the whole portrait is composed of numbers - the higher the value (i.e. 200), the more dark and pronounced is the number, and as the numbers decrease in value, so does there darkness, with smaller values (i.e. 25) resulting in light and faded numbers. Each box that is filled-in represents its 10^5 value e.g. a box with a ‘25’ within it represents 2,500,000, and unfilled-in boxes represent zeo. Therefore, if one were to add up the value of every single box, it would equate to a plausible value for what the population would be in 2050 - approximately 9.6 billion.”

It’s Complicated - “As a part of the summer 2014 showing, ‘The Whole is Greater than the Sum of its Parts’, this work ties into the over-arching theme by tackling the concept of love. When an individual is in love with another, they care for the other’s well-being more so than their own; they care for that individual to such a degree that their own wants, needs, and desires become those of the one they love. When two people mutually enter into this state of love, endlessly infatuated and consumed with the other, they become one being - this singular entity whose actions and thoughts are greater than the parts of which it is composed.”

The I and the Me - the idea of identity. “What sparked my interest in this topic was when the famous sociologist George Herbert Mead and his concept of “the I and the Me” was brought to my attention. In short, Mead sees that one’s identity is composed of two parts; “the I”, which is one’s individuality, comprised of personal and unique opinions, and “The Me”, described as our socially constructed identity, built on ideas like cultural norms, unconscious opinions and patterns of social responses. The boots symbolize “the I”, as I feel all clothing in general can tell you a lot about a person’s preferences, their uniqueness, and individuality. The shadow represents “the Me”, the social identity, because everyone possesses a shadow, a ubiquitous trait of all humans in society.”

Jazzing up a Classic When Max Zapursky sits down to play in the lobby of the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel, it’s on a Fazoli. And when OpenRoad Auto Group unveiled their $1 million Porsche 918 supercar at a recent invite-only event, again it was Max Zapursky and Fazioli that played along. In fact, Max Zapursky is one of the best jazz piano players around - so it only makes sense that he plays on one of the best pianos ever made. “As soon as you start playing, you’re immediately captured by the sound. Such a crisp and beautiful tone. It’s unlike any other piano,” says Zapurski as he sits thoughtfully at the keyboard. “I know it was created initially for classical players, however my idol Herbie Hancock plays jazz on a Fazioli. Anyone who sees one is immediately drawn to it. And now you see it more and more in the jazz world too.” Playing since the age of 15, Zapursky graduated with a Major in Jazz Piano from Capilano University. He has made several albums and plays with various groups and trios in some of Vancouver’s most luxurious locations and at several of the city’s most exclusive VIP affairs. As such, Max has had the privilege of playing on almost each and every style of Fazioli piano ever made, including the rare and stunningly beautiful 24 carat gold leaf Fazioli valued at $535,000. And while the pianos themselves are visually beautiful, Max and his music are proof that a Fazioli is truly an amazing instrument of inspiration through and through. “It allows me to take my music to places I never thought possible. It lets me express myself freely - and I find because of the extreme attention to detail, the outcome is beyond anything I could ever imagine.” This shared passion is evident whenever, and wherever, Max plays. There’s an inseparable and magical connection between musician and instrument which seems to cross all borders and speak all languages. “I guess music and the piano have been two of the main things that have been a constant in my life. I’ve made so many connections by speaking music. There’s no barriers, no real rules, - just raw passion.”

It’s Easy Being Green Spring has sprung early this year, and so has a menu full of fresh flavours for Chef Joel Green and The Lobby Restaurant + Lounge

Chef Joel Green has it easy - or at least he makes it look that way. His natural passion for flavours and food is as simple to see as the twinkle in his eye when he starts talking about all the ways he’s getting ready to welcome spring to The Lobby Restaurant + Lounge. His voice easily fills with excitement as he describes dishes jumping with jicama and fresh pacific cod. Visions of rich red beet salads and spicy prawns with beans tell you this is not your regular kitchen fare. “In designing this new menu, we wanted to make things that were not so typical,” he says. “It’s always got to look good - and we’re always looking at the colours and what is going to ‘pop’ on the plate.” Your mouth will start to water when he talks about his love of lamb, served medium and juicy - or his famous Alaskan scallops, served with deliciously decadent French inspired sauces.

Chef Joel Green, of The Lobby Restaurant + Lounge, insists on using fresh, local ingredients in all of his delicious dishes. Look for the new spring menu arriving soon. Photo: Jonathan Dempsey

“When it goes from my mind to the plate, it makes me feel so good,” he says. Describing it as “West Coast Casual Fine Dining”, Chef Green is combining both elegance and simplicity to come up with a magic menu of fresh seafood, pork, duck and beef dishes all served with local vegetables and less grains and fillers. Surrounded by famous food, fabulous ingredients, elegant surroundings and a wine list that can’t help but inspire creativity - it’s no wonder he appears to do it all with style and ease. The truth is, it’s hard work - but work that this chef says is rewarded by combining a genuine love of food with a passion for pleasing people. “I really enjoy my work here - and I actually miss it when I have a day off,” he laughs. “The big difference here is consistency and enthusiasm. The feedback from guests has been amazing. It’s so magical for me when people say how much they enjoyed it.” It’s the secret recipe most chefs spend a lifetime searching for and years of hard work trying to discover. But as you can clearly see from everything here, for this magical chef - it really is just all about being Green.
