Page Six ‘Twas the Month Before Christmas

‘Twas the month before Christmas and I had a dream, That the world had turned into a strange online meme.

What happened last night? Had my thoughts taken leave? Do I know what is true? Or do I just need . . .to believe.

All the stockings and symbols were stripped from the place, So as not to cause offence, distress or disgrace.

And have faith that all this information, Is much more than just some strange conflagration,

Then Santa was banished, deemed unrealistic. Seems he preyed upon kids and was misogynistic.

To get us all fired up, with anger and hate. It’s too much for some. And yet some can’t wait,

His good reputation was gone long ago, For the fascist repeated use of the word “Ho”.

To tear something down. To tweet something new. But brute force attacks are just not what we do.

His quasi-religious ties to Christianity, Caused city-wide protests and mob-like insanity.

There’s media bias on all TV panels. An obvious agenda, on all of the channels.

His weight, deemed grotesque, means they turned up the heat, And body-shamed him into giving up meat.

Ratings and misinformation are fuel, But ruining lives for headlines is just cruel.

And his clothes. Oh, his clothes. Just where do we start? Dressed in head to toe fur. Does the man have no heart?

As society changes, it’s important to know, To be gentle and kind and thoughtful – and slow.

The reindeer were gone, thanks to animal rights, So, it’s comfort dogs now for the sleigh, on all flights.

And like Santa, these stories may need some revision. But erasing all history is the wrong decision.

Yes, cancel-culture has deemed him a joke. A victory for those who declared themselves “woke”.

The good news is Santa has always been “green”, So climate change activists won’t make a scene.

A straight, fat, white, male. Santa’s not what we need. He’s racist, divisive, and all about greed.

He still wants to try to get to every nation. But with Brexit, and China, and tough immigration,

He must be erased! He’s old fashioned and strange! We can’t let this stand! We must push for change!

He just might not make it. But we’ll wait and see. How Santa survives all the hypocrisy.

They screamed, “Put a stop to this white privileged lie. We must disrupt Christmas. And Santa must die.”

So, St. Nick, please load up your sleigh full of toys, And deliver good dreams full of hope, love and joys.

Then BANG – I woke up, not quite knowing where, And realized that all this was just a nightmare.

And whether your world is red, green, black or white. I wish you Merry Christmas – and to all a good night.

I was safe and secure. No pitchforks in sight. No mobs. No attacks. Everything was all right.

- Catherine Barr / cbarr@westvancouver.com

But as I started my day, I wasn’t quite merry. I thought about Trudeau, and Trump and Don Cherry, And Russia, impeachment, and blackface, and scandal. Clearly, the news was just too much to handle.

Happy 5th Anniversary Craig Turner, left, actor Rob Lowe and Catherine Barr at this year’s Turning Point gala fundraiser

“Who’s ever going to look at that?” That’s what the assistant to the Minister of Transportation and Highways said back in 1999 when I showed him our first-ever live web camera feed that broadcast, in real-time, the lane direction signals on the Lions Gate Bridge. Then, a local business owner told me his thoughts. “People will never order flowers online,” he said as I starting building our WestVancouver.com and NorthVancouver.com websites. “You’re completely crazy.” That’s what they all said five years ago when we said we were going to publish our new magazines. “Newspapers are going out of business every day, and no one under 50 reads print”. Twenty years ago, we set out to make a difference - to give something back to our communities. We are proud to live here, and we wanted to tell the world. And five years ago we doubled-down on that promise and did what very few in history have managed to do – to go from the web, into print, successfully. Now, on this first month of our sixth year in print, we’re looking back on our legacy and our growing love for the people, places and faces that helped make it all happen. We know that it is a changing world and the future needs to be different, and better, in every way. Yesterday’s news on tomorrow’s trees just doesn’t make sense anymore. That is why we are investing even more online. We see the impact it can make – and with over 350,000 visitors per month, we know the world is watching. I hope you’ll come visit us online every day to tell your story, especially in 2020 when you’ll see a whole new version of our WestVancouver.com and NorthVancouver.com websites. As our slogan says, we’re much “Bigger than the North Shore”. And when it comes to print, we’re succeeding there too. Putting the environment first, we deliver our monthly magazines via Canada Post as a carbon-neutral solution. We also use local printers, recyclable papers and inks, and no plastic wrappers or bags. It’s a little more expensive, but the earth is worth it.

That’s why when we tell our stories; they’re made to last. We like to focus on the “good news” and develop a different kind of publication that helps raise money and awareness for charities. A “people first” approach that reaches out on a human level to all ages, backgrounds and cultures. We’re inclusive in every way. In every issue, you’ll find our support for fundraising front and centre with our “Social Seen” pages. In addition, we’ve donated over $200,000 to various local charities to date and love sponsoring various types of events in conjunction with all the other major media outlets in town. Because when it comes to spreading the word, everyone in the community should always be included. So when it comes to being a little crazy, we don’t mind. It’s what they called Steve Jobs when he invented the iPhone and the Wright brothers when they thought they could fly. In fact, being crazy isn’t that hard. The hardest part comes from being strong and convincing others to be brave enough to go a little crazy with you. To reject old ways and try something new. To be different and daring. To be uncomfortable with the notion that “that’s the way we’ve always done it” and go boldly in a new direction that includes everyone, no matter what your age. Because together we’re stronger, and no amount of fake news, or intimidation, can ever take that away. So when you pour the champagne this year as the clock strikes midnight, I hope you’ll be inspired to remember that a New Year always starts with new opportunities. Real people, not only celebrities, make the world go around. And we dedicate these pages and stories of success to you. From all of us, to all of you - let’s celebrate the holidays with spirit and sparkle. Thank you so much for your incredible support, and we send you all our best wishes. Looking forward to seeing you again in 2020 for more. Happy New Year! - Catherine Barr / cbarr@westvancouver.com
